5 Steps for the Perfect Computer Science Cover Letter

You've just had a glimpse of what a winning cover letter should be like, and now it's your turn to craft your own .

No worries, it's a straightforward process—all you need to do is follow these steps:

#1. Put Contact Information in the Header

Kick off your cover letter with your contact information in the header, much like your computer science resume

Here's what you should include:

  • Full Name: Put your first and last name at the top.
  • Job Title: Use the same job title as the computer science job you want. This helps because hiring agents go through lots of applications for different roles.
  • Email Address: Use a simple and professional email, like using your name. For example, "[email protected]" is good, but "[email protected]" is not.
  • Phone Number: Give the right phone number so they can call you. If the job is in another country, add the country code before your number.
  • Location: Usually, just your city and state or country is enough. But if you can work from anywhere or move for the job, say so.
  • Relevant Links (Optional): If you have websites or profiles like LinkedIn that show your work, you can add them.

Now, let's shift our focus to including the hiring manager's information:

  • Company Name: Write the name of the company you're sending the cover letter to.
  • Hiring Manager's Name: Try to find out who the hiring person is. You can look at the job ad, the company website, or LinkedIn.
  • Hiring Manager's Title: If you know their job title (e.g. if they're the department head), use that instead of just saying "Hiring Manager."
  • Location: Write down the city and country where the company is. If you know the street address and want to be very specific, you can include it.
  • Email Address (Optional): If you find the email of the hiring person, you can add it to talk to them directly.
  • Date of Writing (Optional): If you want, include the date you wrote the letter.

#2. Address the Hiring Manager

Once you've included all your relevant contact details, it's important to address your science cover letter to the hiring manager the right way.

Begin by doing some research. Check the job listing, the company's website, or their LinkedIn profile to identify the hiring manager for the computer science department you're applying to. This way, you can find their name and email address.

When addressing them, avoid the outdated “To Whom It May Concern.” You can use "Ms." or "Mr." followed by their last name for a professional greeting. However, if you're unsure about their gender or marital status, simply use their full name. For example:

  • Dear Mr. Patel,
  • Dear Maya Patel,

If you can't find any information about the hiring manager or head of the computer science department, you can address your letter to the department or the company in general:

  • Dear Computer Science Department,
  • Dear Computer Science Hiring Team,
  • Dear Human Resources Recruitment Team,
  • Dear Head of Computer Science,

This personalized touch will enhance your computer science cover letter and increase your chances of making a positive impression on potential employers.

#3. Write an Eye-Catching Opening Statement

Hiring managers often spend just seven seconds looking at an application before deciding whether it’s worth their time. So, needless to say, your cover letter needs to make a good first impression right from the bat.

This is where your opening paragraph comes in.

Begin your cover letter by formally introducing yourself and expressing your enthusiasm for the job, the field, or the industry. Showing you're excited about computer science or the job can definitely catch the hiring manager’s attention.

Doing a little homework on the company also helps. The more you know about them, the better you can show you'd be a good fit culture fit. Not to mention, showing you’ve done your homework lets them know you really want this job, not just any job.

If you have professional experience in the field, you can start your cover letter by talking about a specific achievement you’re proud of or some job-related skills.

But remember - keep this part short. You want to pique the hiring manager’s interest and get them to read the rest of your cover letter.

Check out these amazing cover letter examples to get you started with your opening statement.

#4. Use the Cover Letter Body for the Details

The main part of your computer science cover letter is where you can talk about why you're just the right fit for the job in more detail.

However, don’t just repeat what's on your resume . Use the space on your cover letter to really show off what you can do for the company and how you can fit in with the team. You want to convince the hiring manager that you're the best pick, so, depending on your professional level, elaborate on your big achievements in computer science and your most relevant skills.

The key here is to let the job ad guide you.

By keeping in mind the exact requirements of the job ad, you can highlight the exact skills the employer is looking for. Like, if the job is about technical skills, talk about those and not something else like your e-commerce experience.

Knowing about the company can also give you a boost. If you know their products or what they do, say so. It shows you care about the job and fit in with their values or company culture. Not to mention, it proves you want that specific job, not any job out there.

And while you’re at it, make sure to avoid these critical cover letter mistakes !

#5. Wrap It Up and Sign It

Wrapping up your computer science cover letter is like fixing the last parts of a tricky code.

You want the person reading it to remember you in a good way and remove any doubts about what you can bring to the table from their minds. So, when you’re finishing your cover letter, reiterate why you're perfect for the job or give a quick summary of the most relevant computer skills that set you apart from the crowd.

Then, include a call to action, like inviting the hiring manager to call you or setting up a meeting to further discuss your application. This can help you get noticed and maybe get a chance to land that coveted interview.

Finally, end your letter in a proper way . Pick a professional signature line, and then write your full name. Here's how to do it:

Please don't hesitate to contact me at the provided email or phone number to arrange an interview. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to delve deeper into my application at your earliest convenience.

Sarah Johnson

And if you prefer a less common closing than "Sincerely," consider these alternatives:

  • Kind regards,
  • Respectfully yours,
  • Thank you for your consideration,

Pick the signature that best resonates with your style and the tone of your computer science cover letter.

Dear Ms. Johnson:

Keen foresight, enthusiasm for inventing creative solutions, and an engineering background keep me happily fixing bugs and optimizing software throughout the entire development life cycle. This is an opportunity for us to partner together, where I’ll apply my proficiency in C#, LabVIEW, Linux, Vector Cast, and more toward achieving Chipton-Ross’ goals of collaboratively providing superior services to the staffing industry.

Abigail Clark Northrop Grumman Corporation 123 Fictional Lane Baltimore, MD 21201

Dear Ms. Clark:

Intrigued to the core by Northrop Grumman’s relentless pursuit of solutions for space, aeronautics, defense, and cyberspace challenges, I can’t help but jump at the opportunity to serve as a software engineer intern. The chance to immerse myself in the endeavor of crafting software capable of meeting the nuanced demands of clients across the globe aligns not just with my career aspirations but also feeds my insatiable appetite for learning from leaders who triumph over the most challenging technological terrains.

In my software development course at Loyola University Maryland, I channeled the raw power of Python, creating a novel application designed to streamline problem-solving. As validated by user trials, this application manifested into a potent tool capable of boosting productivity by 18.6%. This achievement was driven by an unwavering dedication to clean, efficient code, a feat made possible by my systematic implementation of Git. The version control system served a two-fold purpose: ensuring a pristine codebase and facilitating a well-oiled project workflow.

Following my academic expedition, I eagerly plunged into the cutthroat world of cybersecurity at the Maryland Cyber Challenge. My team and I designed a digital fortress with Python-built security protocols to repel data breaches. In an ingenious move, we automated primary functions that helped us identify, neutralize, and deflect 73.2% of simulated cyber-attacks.

Earlier this year, I interned at a thriving Baltimore startup, Esurgi. Here, I had the opportunity to work on a database management project, wielding the power of PostgreSQL. Rebuilding and redesigning database schemas introduced refreshing modifications that catalyzed a tangible 21.4% acceleration in data retrieval speeds.

The prospect of joining the Northrop Grumman team and applying hands-on experience from academic coursework and competitions to real-world challenges is thrilling. With heartfelt appreciation, I look forward to perhaps harnessing this opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to the trailblazing mission that your organization undertakes.

  • For example, Amara’s stint as an intern at Esurgi shows her using PostgreSQL for database management, providing the recruiter with tangible evidence of her competency even as an intern. How you weave in this tale matters, though. Outline your responsibility and impact catalyzed by your contribution. Top it off with the lessons learned.

Daniel Thompson Medtronic 123 Fictional Lane Memphis, TN 38101

Dear Mr. Thompson:

In response to Medtronic’s quest for pros who understand the power and potential of software in transforming healthcare, I’m compelled to apply my abilities in programming languages, version control systems, and more as an entry-level software engineer. The opportunity to contribute to meaningful applications that positively impact health resonates deeply and aligns with my personal and professional aspirations.

My computer science coursework at the University of Memphis cultivated a solid mastery of Java, a language well-suited to building large, enterprise-level applications. Also, my fluency in Python has been instrumental in data analysis and scripting—crucial skills in developing and maintaining healthcare software.

Interning at MiCare Path, I gained valuable experience in version control systems. I played a crucial role in administering the Git system, smoothing the development workflow and reducing code conflicts by an estimated 16.7%. This opportunity deepened my understanding of collaboration in software development while improving code quality and project management.

Additionally, I embarked on an independent project to develop a dynamic website from scratch. I used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create an intuitive user interface and functionality. This health-based information platform has witnessed about 142 new users within its first month, demonstrating effective use of web development skills to provide valuable resources to the public.

Combining academic, professional, and independent project experiences, I believe my versatile skills and strong problem-solving ability align with Medtronic’s mission to ease pain, restore health, and prolong life. I look forward to discussing how my skills can contribute to Medtronic’s innovative solutions. Thank you.

Robert McKenley, Hiring Manager Rushdown Studios 462 Chelsea Rd Oceanside, New York 11572

Dear Mr. McKenley,

As a Python software engineer with 5 years of experience alongside countless more as an avid gamer, I’m confident I would make a skilled and valuable addition to Rushdown’s team. Just as I live for each new gaming challenge in Twisted Treeline, I thrive in environments that challenge my strategic planning and creative use of skills such as PostgreSQL, AWS, and Docker.

As an adept problem-solver with a strong background in Oracle and RESTful APIs, I worked with my old team at Knewton to diagnose issues with current application infrastructures and eliminate errors to improve user feedback by 23 percent. I would say that RESTful APIs are my “ultimate ability.” I also used my deep familiarity with REST in a team setting to boost page loading speed by 16 percent.

Additionally, I have extensive experience adapting to a vast pre-existing codebase while helping my teammates pinpoint and prioritize obstacles; this resulted in optimized teamwork as well as optimized solutions. For example, I collaborated with my development team on a testing infrastructure with broad coverage that reduced bugs by 11 percent and cut down negative customer feedback on Knewton’s cooperative programming by 21 percent.

While I’m grateful for all I’ve learned in previous roles, I’m eager to apply my gaming passion and knack for problem-solving to excel as your Python software engineer. I’m excited to share with you at your earliest convenience how I intend to leverage my communicative, multitasking, and technical skills to set my crosshairs on each new obstacle and help level up Rushdown’s team—creating the ultimate gaming experience.

Thanks very much for your consideration,

Write Your Best Software Engineer Cover Letter

A computer with code and a second monitor with a software engineer cover letter rest on a desk

All in all, the best cover letter will demonstrate a strong understanding and connection with the company. A software engineer can do this by using their technical skills to relate to the role in the job description coupled with the company’s overall vision and goals—all with a winning tone and positive message, of course!

Use the following steps to guide your writing process so you can write your best cover letter yet.

application letter for an computer engineer

Step 1: Know the company & understand the role

So many cover letters out there are snooze-fests that wind up in the recycling bin. To ensure yours isn’t one of them, pay attention to the details of the specific software engineer position you’re applying for and tailor your cover letter accordingly.

Read the  software engineer job ad . Keep an eye out for things that set it apart—details like specific programming languages and software strategies, for example.

Research the company, too! Your software engineer cover letter must not only demonstrate a crystal-clear understanding of the role as laid out in the job description but prove that you’re a great fit with the company’s values, goals, and core missions. Just a handful of details showing that you know the company’s vision and software engineer role better than the average applicant will go a long way in setting you apart from other applicants.

application letter for an computer engineer

Step 2: Align your successes with the company’s needs

Your  software engineer resume  offers recruiters a quick peek at your skills and professional history. Since it’s less than a page, you don’t have much space within your bullet points to give a more extensive explanation of how your skills and experience make you an ideal candidate for the specific position. That’s the job of your cover letter!

Touch upon the best points in your software engineer resume but expand upon them with descriptions of how you accomplished said achievements as well as the positive impact they had. Don’t just talk about what you created—talk about what it did to benefit others.

  • Taking this a step further, your resume might list your Python and MySQL skills—but how did you apply them during your last job?
  • Did you build an application that boosted profit margins and kept them growing after you departed?
  • Did you engineer an analytical or testing application that significantly reduced bug and error reports?
  • Maybe you singlehandedly optimized an application to skyrocket customer satisfaction rates: If you did, say so!

This is your opportunity to show off your greatest accomplishments anecdotally and tie them into what the job description requests.

application letter for an computer engineer

Tip 3: Don’t underestimate your tone & message

As you can probably imagine, there’s a lot more that goes into a cover letter for software engineers besides technical information. The overall message of your letter should mirror the qualities that the job listing calls for and demonstrate the values and vision of the company as a whole.  You don’t want to just convey that you’re a software engineer who can work wherever—your message needs to convey that you want to work  there!

As a software engineer with a vast array of technical skills and fascinating professional experiences, it might be tricky—but keep your cover letter to a page. And within that space, consider your tone of voice.

Your tone should match the role: Senior software engineer candidates should convey confidence and experience, and all applicants (especially entry-level ones) should demonstrate enthusiasm and eagerness to contribute to the company.

Additionally, consider the company culture and vibes. Working for a healthcare company likely means you should take a bit more formal tone while employers at a gaming company will probably appreciate a little pizazz and a more conversational approach.

Software engineer candidates should convey confidence, experience, and demonstrate eagerness to contribute to the company.

Lastly, set aside time for editing and revising. It may take several tries to get the message and tone of your cover letter just right, but the extra effort is worth it! Ensure you clean up embarrassing typos or copy-paste mishaps in your cover letter, and be deliberate about word choice to refine your tone.

Outlining your software engineer cover letter is a great way to make sure you don’t forget any key points. And just as  formatting your resume  is important, format matters in your cover letter, too; we’ve got you covered.

How to start a software engineer cover letter

Your contact info:  List your name, phone number, location, and email (if you’re using a templated cover letter).

  • Formatting:  Leave out your name here if you’re using a business block format for your address.

Date:  Use the exact date that you submit your application materials

  • Formatting:  Write out the full date instead of shortening it, e.g., January 5, 2023.

Inside address:  This is the recipient’s address. Include their name, company and position, and the company’s address.

Clive Russo, Hiring Manager UCLA Health Human Resources 4562 Larwin Ave Cypress, California 90630

  • Formatting:  Each part of the address should be on a new line. Remember to double-space between the inside address and your greeting, too.

Greeting:  Your greeting/salutation is your crucial first impression! Do your homework and uncover the name of the hiring manager or employer, avoiding generic terms like “To whom it may concern,” and please, at all costs, never start with “Dear Sir or Madam.” Ick!

  • Formatting:  Use a colon instead of a comma after your greeting for more formal companies. Companies like Rushdown (see the Python software engineer cover letter sample) are far more casual; a comma will do just fine.

application letter for an computer engineer

How to write your software engineer cover letter

Body:  The body of your software engineer cover letter should be 3-4 paragraphs that demonstrate your interest, show off your credentials, and exhibit an appropriate level of enthusiasm for future discussion.

  • Formatting:  Lines should be single-spaced throughout the body but double-spaced between paragraphs.

Opening paragraph:  Don’t be generic or vague. The last thing you want is for a potential employer to say “Boring!” and toss your cover letter aside.

Bad : I really like gaming, so it’d be great if I could work for your company. I’m familiar with plenty of technical tools that would help your company.

Why It’s Bad : Based on what we just discussed, this cover letter has already been tossed. It’s great that the applicant apparently loves gaming and has technical skills—but exactly how will they help the company . . .? What “technical tools” are they?

Good : As a Python software engineer with 5 years of experience alongside countless more as an avid gamer, I’m confident I would make a skilled and valuable addition to Rushdown’s team. Just as I live for each new gaming challenge in Twisted Treeline, I thrive in environments that challenge my strategic planning and creative use of skills such as PostgreSQL, AWS, and Docker.

Why It’s Good : This introductory paragraph dives into the applicant’s experience and demonstrates a strong personal connection with the company’s passion for gaming—all while exploring technical skills the job description specifically listed in its requirements section. Nice!

Paragraphs 2-3:  These paragraphs are for you to shine the spotlight on your best achievements that align with the job ad and with the company’s goals, values, and mission.

It’s time to put your money where your mouth is—but remember to maintain a clear focus in each paragraph. You don’t have room for all your awesome achievements, so try to stick with one major point per paragraph and include only the most relevant metrics and results.

Why It’s Good : Beverly highlights something from the job description that she’s already done (engineering large-scale algorithmic software) and provides the number as evidence of her claim. She also clarifies exactly how this accomplishment will benefit the place where she’s applying now, even though her past experiences were applied within a very different type of company.

Closing paragraph:  Finish strong with a concise but compelling statement of how your traits and abilities as a software engineer align with what the company or organization needs. And lastly, end with an enthusiastic call to action that encourages future contact with the company.

Bad : As you can see in my letter, I’m well qualified for this position and would do a great job with my skills. Call me anytime for more info and I can tell you more about the other stuff I can do.

Why It’s Bad : Where do we even start with this one? Your cover letter should be specific, adding more tidbits on why you’re an excellent fit whenever possible. This redundant first sentence and boring, informal call to action are inexcusable.

Good : The strong team culture at Chipton-Ross resonates with me as I enjoy thinking analytically to resolve questions of program intent and translating documentation and data into helpful operating instructions for my coworkers. I welcome further discussion, so please contact me for details on how my software engineering experience will benefit your team and maximize client savings.

Why It’s Good : This one works. You can see how the applicant’s traits and experience align with the company’s values, and there are several keywords that came straight from the job description. Additionally, the call to action is welcoming yet professional while reinforcing the candidate’s value to the company.

How to end a software engineer cover letter

Signature:  Say “thank you” if you didn’t do that in your closing paragraph, and always use a professional close along with your real name.

  • Formatting:  If you’re handing out hard copies of your software engineer cover letter (anyone out there still doing this?), quadruple-space before your name. This allows space to sign by hand in blue/black ink.

Enclosure(s):  This part of your cover letter is important since it signals the recruiter to look over any supplemental materials. Pay attention to the job description for requested materials like certifications or letters of recommendation.

Enclosures:  Resume  Application Letter of Recommendation

  • Formatting:  Make sure you use the correct singular or plural form of “enclosure” depending on how many items you’re enclosing!

Software Engineer Cover Letter Mistakes to Avoid

  • If you’re applying to work as a software engineer, you and your reader share a mutual, unspoken understanding that you’re working at a pretty advanced level in your field. All the same, make sure you don’t assume recruiters know exactly what you’re talking about and get vague about software knowledge—especially when you could enrich your software engineer cover letter with specific names like C# and JavaScript.
  • We understand: You’re probably laser-focused on the technicalities of what you can build and test to ensure client satisfaction each day. However, it’s still important to be able to communicate your expertise to other team members or other departments. Collaboration is a huge part of the software engineering role since you’ll coordinate with other teams to communicate your engineering vision and ensure optimal results.
  • In an engineering role of any kind, recruiters will take this as a bad sign—if you can’t give your cover letter a sound structure, how effective would you really be in their open job role? Organization and lack of precision can render a software engineer’s work buggy or even unusable! Make sure recruiters know you’ll eliminate this problem by organizing your cover letter thoroughly, reading it again for flow and checking for quantifiable examples of past successful creations.
  • Again, attention to detail is as crucial as your ability to problem-solve during the software engineering (and troubleshooting!) process. Make sure you demonstrate your ability to conduct relevant research and find solutions efficiently by seeking out the name of the person your cover letter is going to! Writing a strong introductory paragraph afterward will help your case, too: Briefly outline a few personal traits and skills that will help solve the problems presented in the job description.

Before You Land Your Dream Software Engineering Role

The best way to start a Computer Science cover letter is by grabbing the reader's attention with a strong opening line. This could be a brief statement about your passion for computer science, a notable achievement, or how you can solve a problem the company is facing. Then, introduce yourself and mention the job you're applying for. It's important to show enthusiasm and make a connection to the company early on. For example, "As a dedicated software developer with a proven track record in innovative problem-solving, I was excited to see your opening for a Senior Software Engineer."

Computer Sciences professionals should end a cover letter by summarizing their interest in the position and their belief in their ability to contribute positively to the company. They should reiterate their key skills and experiences that align with the job requirements. It's also important to express appreciation for the reader's time and consideration. For example: "In conclusion, I am excited about the opportunity to bring my unique blend of skills and experience to your team, and I am confident that I can contribute to the ongoing success of your company. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing this opportunity further." Remember to end with a professional closing such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your full name. It's also a good idea to include your contact information again in case the cover letter gets separated from your resume.

A Computer Sciences cover letter should ideally be one page long. This length is sufficient to concisely present your qualifications, skills, and interest in the position without overwhelming the reader with too much information. It's important to keep it focused and relevant to the job you're applying for. Remember, hiring managers often have to go through hundreds of applications, so a concise, well-structured cover letter can help you stand out. In terms of word count, aim for 300-500 words. This allows you to clearly express your interest in the role, explain how your skills and experiences align with the job requirements, and demonstrate your knowledge about the company.

Writing a cover letter with no experience in Computer Science can seem challenging, but it's all about showcasing your potential, enthusiasm, and relevant skills that can be transferred to the job. Here's how you can do it: 1. Start with a Strong Introduction: Begin your cover letter by introducing yourself and stating the position you're applying for. Make sure to express your enthusiasm for the role and the company. 2. Highlight Relevant Skills: Even if you don't have direct experience, you likely have skills that are relevant to the job. These could be soft skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, or teamwork, or hard skills like proficiency in a certain programming language, data analysis, or project management. Make sure to provide examples of how you've used these skills in the past. 3. Showcase Your Education: If you're a recent graduate or currently studying, highlight relevant coursework, projects, or research you've done that relates to the job. This can show your knowledge and passion for the field. 4. Discuss Your Learning Initiatives: If you've taken any online courses, attended workshops, or done any self-study in computer science, be sure to mention it. This shows your initiative and eagerness to learn. 5. Show Your Passion: Employers want to hire people who are passionate about their work. Discuss why you're interested in computer science and how you plan to contribute to the field. 6. Conclude Professionally: In your conclusion, express your interest in the opportunity to interview and learn more about the company. Thank the hiring manager for their time and consideration. Remember, everyone starts somewhere. What you lack in experience, you can make up for in passion, dedication, and a willingness to learn.

Entry-Level

A great computer science intern cover letter can often compensate for a lack of hands-on experience during the job search. Although you’ll be facing fierce competition, it’s possible to differentiate yourself by highlighting your academic projects and unique skill sets within the technology field. Below, we’ll provide guidance to help you build each section of your computer science intern cover letter.

1. Contact information and salutation

Feature all essential contact information in the header of your computer science intern cover letter, including your name, phone number, email, and LinkedIn URL. Be sure to address the hiring manager by name — Mr. or Ms. [Last Name]. If you can’t find the hiring manager’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager.” It’s best to avoid salutations like “To Whom It May Concern,” as your greeting should be direct and personal.

2. Introduction

Open your computer science intern cover letter with a compelling professional achievement. Featuring hard numbers and metrics can help grab the hiring manager’s attention, but you may not be able to quantify your accomplishments early in your career. In this case, you might mention your GPA or highlight key technology skills that the organization is looking for. If you completed a particularly challenging or innovative project while pursuing your degree, consider building your introduction around it.

During my summer internship with Apple, I supported the development of AI and machine-learning solutions for self-driving vehicles. • Conducted complex coding in Python and utilized knowledge of deep learning to support projects
  • Utilized knowledge of Big Data to create complex data models and identify statistical patterns

Rather than providing a list of skills on your computer science intern cover letter, emphasize your technical knowledge in the form of academic projects. For example, you might mention you developed a unique application using Python and object-oriented design principles. Below, we’ve compiled various computer science-related skills to keep in mind as you build your document:

Key Skills and Qualifications
Agile methodology Application development
Artificial intelligence (AI) C#
Cloud technology Computer engineering

Data integrity Data science
Java Microsoft Azure
Object-oriented design (OOD) Python
Software development lifecycles (SDLC) SQL
System administration System architecture

5. Closing section

Reinforce how your technical expertise will allow you to excel in the position. Be sure to thank the hiring manager for their time and consideration in the last sentence.

I hope to speak with you further regarding how my background in machine learning and AI can benefit Advanced AI Inc. You can contact me for additional information at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best regards,

Key Takeaways

  • Computer programmers write, test and debug code that allows software and applications to run correctly.
  • You need a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field to become a computer programmer. It also helps to get hands-on experience and to earn a relevant professional certification.
  • You can earn a good salary as a computer programmer, but the number of job openings for this role is declining because of automation. Programmers can spend more time on things that can’t be automated or consider using their skills to pursue related careers such as software development or engineering.

What Is a Computer Programmer?

Computer programmers are tech professionals who play an essential role in the software development life cycle. They write the code that makes software and applications run correctly on computers and lets people accomplish their desired tasks. Programmers work closely with software developers and engineers, and sometimes their duties overlap.

But exactly what do computer programmers do all day? Common job duties for computer programmers include the following:

  • Write and test code using various programming languages such as JavaScript, Python, C++ and Ruby
  • Debug, or fix, errors in code
  • Use and create code libraries
  • Write and use software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications
  • Design software programs (technically a software developer task, but sometimes programming and software development duties overlap)

How To Become a Computer Programmer

Becoming a computer programmer usually takes at least four years, the amount of time it typically takes to earn a bachelor’s degree in computer programming or a related field. Prospective computer programmers should also consider completing an internship, pursuing a professional certification and taking continuing education classes to make the most of their job prospects.

There are also computer programming bootcamps available for career switchers and programming certificates for students who want a fast-tracked education. However, you probably won’t qualify for as many jobs with a bootcamp or certificate as you would with a full degree. Below, we explain the steps to becoming a computer programmer.

Earn Your Bachelor’s Degree

The first step to becoming a computer programmer is to earn your bachelor’s degree in computer programming or a related field such as computer science . These four-year programs cover programming languages and let students write and test code and fix programming problems. Besides providing experience with specific programming languages, a computer science degree gives the foundation and background knowledge to learn new programming languages.

Degree Finder

Complete an internship.

You’ll get to do some hands-on computer programming in your bachelor’s program. However, many employers prefer to hire programmers with professional experience. You can get professional experience while still in school through an internship. Internships can also provide the chance to network with other professionals in the field, meet prospective mentors and get letters of recommendation or even job offers for after graduation.

Consider Professional Certification

Professional certifications, widely used in the information technology field, can help your job prospects as a programmer. Some employers like to hire programmers who are certified in the programming language or a vendor-specific product that their organization uses.

See the section on certifications for computer programmers below for more information.

Take Continuing Education Classes

Technology is constantly changing. To stay relevant in the tech field, and to learn new programming languages and skills, plan to regularly take continuing education classes and participate in professional development activities. Programmers usually must complete continuing education every few years to maintain or renew professional certifications.

Computer Programmer Salary and Job Outlook

Computer programmers earn relatively high salaries: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that computer programmers earned a median annual salary of $99,700 as of May 2023. Programmers in the top 10% earned more than $167,230.

The BLS projects an 11% decline in computer programmer jobs between 2022 and 2032. This is largely because of increased automation of programming tasks and because developers and analysts are taking on some programming tasks.

Even though employment may decline in this field, the BLS still projects about 6,700 job openings for computer programmers each year between 2022 and 2032. These job openings are expected to arise when workers retire or change fields. As more programming tasks become automated, computer programmers may shift to focus on other work that is more difficult to automate, such as strategic planning.

Earning potential for computer programmers varies by industry and region. Top-paying states for programmers include Washington, California and New Jersey, where you can earn $122,830 to $158,520 per year. Programmers can make the highest average salaries (over $140,000) by working in the following industries:

  • Building material and supplies dealers
  • Securities, commodity contracts and other financial investments and related activities
  • Oil and gas extraction

Computer Programmer Specializations

Computer programmers usually specialize in several programming languages. They can also focus on various other areas of the field. We highlight some popular computer programmer specializations below.

  • Programming languages such as Python , JavaScript, C# , Ruby, Go, Java , HTML/CSS
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Computer and network security
  • Software engineering
  • Software development
  • Cloud computing

If you earn a bachelor’s degree, one of the typical computer programmer requirements, it will usually take at least four years to become a computer programmer. If you teach yourself programming or complete a programming bootcamp, you may be able to become a computer programmer in less time. However, you likely won’t qualify for as many jobs as you would with a degree.

How do I get started as a computer programmer?

The best way to start working as a computer programmer is to earn a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. An internship provides hands-on experience and can help you get your first job. Getting a relevant professional certification can also increase your chances of getting hired.

If you're an engineering or STEM graduate, or a professional with a strong engineering background, Dartmouth's online MEng: CE offers a highly effective program to build your technical skills and engineering expertise.

Eligibility Requirements

Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth (Dartmouth Engineering) places great value on professional and practical experience, and all applications are considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants are required to have a bachelor's degree prior to starting the program. The admissions team will consider applicants holistically, considering applicants with a wide range of STEM-related educational backgrounds and professional experiences as eligible for the program.

Specifically:

  • Applicants with an accredited bachelor's level degree in engineering or with bachelor's level degrees in related STEM fields (eg. computer science, physics) should be well prepared for success in this program.
  • Applicants with an accredited bachelor's level degree outside of engineering, but with relevant STEM experience and skills will be equally considered. (Note: Depending on the focus of the bachelor’s degree and skills obtained, additional prerequisite coursework beyond the degree requirements may be required.)

We encourage applicants to describe in their application materials how their educational background and professional experience can set them on a path for success in the program.

Relevant Coursework & Technical Skills

Applicants will benefit from having demonstrated knowledge and previously developed skills across core foundational areas prior to taking the program, including linear algebra , calculus , probability and statistics , basic programming (eg. C, Python), digital logic , and analog circuit fundamentals .

For foundational technical skills and knowledge you will need to be successful in the program, we encourage you to explore Dartmouth's free online course: C Programming with Linux . Building skills in C programming, as well as confidence in command line interfaces, will be useful in specific courses such as Embedded Systems, and in more advanced courses in the curriculum.

Applicants who complete some or all of the C Programming with Linux specialization are encouraged to share their knowledge with the admissions committee in their application materials to represent their experience with relevant prerequisite knowledge.

The following instructions are a guide for completing the application for the online MEng: CE program at Dartmouth. Please read them carefully. Only complete applications will be considered for admission.

Required Application Materials

Application materials and supporting documents become the property of the Admissions Committee and are not returnable.

General Policies

False Statements/Materials: If a candidate for admission to Dartmouth makes a false statement or submits falsified material in connection with his or her application, and the misrepresentation is discovered after the candidate has been admitted, the offer of admission ordinarily will be withdrawn. If the misrepresentation is discovered after a student arrives on campus or at any time during their enrollment, the student will be subject to loss of credits earned and disciplinary action that could include separation from the College. If the discovery occurs after a degree has been awarded, the degree normally will be rescinded.

Equal Opportunity: Dartmouth Engineering actively supports equal opportunity for all persons regardless of race or ethnic background. No student will be denied admission or be otherwise discriminated against because of sex, handicap, religion, sexual orientation, race, color, or national origin.

Security and Fire Safety Report: Dartmouth prepares an annual Security and Fire Safety Report which is available to all current and prospective employees and students. The report includes statistics of reported crimes that have occurred on campus, in certain off-campus buildings, or on property owned or controlled by Dartmouth, and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus as well as reported fires occurring in residential facilities. The report also includes institutional policies concerning campus security, such as policies concerning sexual assault, fire safety, and other matters. You may obtain a copy of this report by contacting the Director of Safety and Security and the College Proctor at +1 (603) 646-4000.

  • What are your near-term and long-term career goals?
  • How has your current career and/or academic work shaped or influenced your pathway?
  • How will the online MEng: CE help you advance your goals, and what are your reasons for pursuing this program at Dartmouth? Include any information that does not appear elsewhere in your application that will help us evaluate your candidacy.

Personal Background (form completion)

You will enter information such as your name, address, email address, phone number, biographical information, citizenship, etc.

Program Supplemental Page (form completion and file uploads)

This page will include questions aboutanticipated full-time or part-time course load, skills and knowledge preparation, and group work preparation (brief written descriptions). The supplemental page will also ask you to upload a statement of purpose (described in more detail above), a resume, and an optional essay described below.

Academic History (form completion)

Three (3) Letters of Recommendation, on Official Letterhead

Letters can come from academic and/or professional references, and should be completed and submitted online directly by your recommender on their institutional letterhead.

You are encouraged to submit letters that speak to your current level of professional skill in engineering and related STEM fields, which may come from academic recommenders (eg. college professors), professional recommenders (eg. immediate supervisors, current or former employers, etc), military recommenders, or all of the above.

Letters can also come from references from volunteer experience so long as the letter makes clear how the experience contributes to your readiness for the program.

Resume/CV (file upload)

Upload your resume or CV.

English Proficiency Test Scores

Non-US citizens must submit language proficiency test scores, with the exception of those who are earning or have earned a degree from institutions in the US or Canada, or who are from the following countries: Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Ghana, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Slovenia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the US.

For all graduate programs, Dartmouth Engineering accepts the following English proficiency tests: TOEFL , IELTS , and Duolingo . During the application process, self-reported scores are acceptable. However, once admitted, students will be required to submit official test results directly from the testing organization.

The ETS code for Thayer School is 3360.

Academic Transcripts (file upload)

All applicants are required to submit academic transcripts from each undergraduate or graduate institution from which you obtained your degrees (eg. your bachelor's degree or other advanced degrees).

Applicants with international transcripts are strongly encouraged to submit a transcript evaluation from WES (World Education Services) along with their Dartmouth Engineering application. While a WES evaluation is not mandatory for admission, it can help expedite the admissions review process.

If you are admitted, you will need to submit official academic transcripts for all your coursework and credentials. For international transcripts, WES evaluations can be used instead of official transcripts, but they must be sent directly to Dartmouth Engineering by the evaluation service provider, and they must include a copy of the official transcripts that were evaluated.
