With so many fun and accessible ways to take photos, there is no wonder why everyone is so photo-happy these days. As easy as it may be to stock up on photos, it can be a challenge to keep them organized. One great way to keep your photos in a convenient place, that is easy to access when you want to reminisce on special memories, is by uploading them into PowerPoint. By doing this, you can create a slideshow that is a fun-filled way to back up the memories in your life.

Creating Photo Slideshows for PC Computers

Step 1 Open PowerPoint and create a new presentation.

  • Remember to save your presentation after something that will help you to remember what pictures are in the file. This will help you to locate them later on.

Step 3 Name the title page.

  • Select a layout that will accommodate your image, such as a slide with a title box and an image box, a slide with just an image box, or even a blank slide.

Step 5 Import pictures to your slides.

  • Double-click inside the image box (or go to Insert > Picture > From File ), then browse to the desired image.
  • Click "Okay" or "Insert" to add the image. If you don't like the way it looks, select the image and click on "Picture" to change it out for a different one. You can also select the image and hit "Delete" to remove the picture.

Step 6 Rearrange the photo order if necessary.

  • Locate the "Slide Sorter" button near the bottom of the image pane. Then, click and drag the slides to the desired destinations.

Step 7 Add transitions to your slide shows.

  • To add music, click on the movies and audio icon located under the "Insert" tab. First, go to "Audio from file", and then, click on "Music" to pull up your music. When you choose the song you want, click on the song, and press "Link to file" before pressing "Insert". [9] X Research source
  • You can choose if the song plays for just one slide or the entire presentation by clicking on "Format Audio" next to the "Home" button, and then, clicking on "Play Across Slides" under "Audio Options". [10] X Research source

Step 10 Save your PowerPoint slideshow before you finish.

Creating Photo Slideshows for Mac Computers

Step 1 Open PowerPoint by double-clicking on the icon.

  • You can scroll through your photos and choose the ones you want to add to your slideshow by double-clicking on them.

Step 6 Rearrange the photo order if necessary.

  • To add music, click on the movies and audio icon located at the top of the PowerPoint screen. Then, click on "Music" and all of your music should appear. When you choose the song you want, drag and drop the file onto one of your slides.
  • You can choose if the song plays for just one slide or the entire presentation by clicking on "Format Audio" next to the "Home" button, and then, clicking on "Play Across Slides" under "Audio Options".

Best photo slideshow software and apps 2022

The best photo slideshow software turns your images and music into a seamless presentation

Best photo slideshow software

The best photo slideshow software can turn your long list of photos into a lively and engaging experience. From family holidays and trips with friends to your kids' sports and arts progress – this software is ideal for sharing your beloved images with others.

The best photo slideshow software does more than simply pairing images and music. Some will help you remove any out of focus or unclear shots so you get the best end result. Then you can add more such as annotations, maps and beyond.

These programs work across a host of devices and some even offer more advanced video editing tools for you to work with while remaining easy to use. Or, for more basic versions that work right there on your smartphone, there are the likes of  PixGram for Android and PicPlayHost for iOS which are free and easy to use but lack more complex features.

Image editing is possible on a basic level with filters included on many of the programs, allowing you to make certain snaps pop out as needed. But to go deeper on this you'll want to look at the best photo editing software . Should you want to keep all your photos organized, to make the whole process far easier, then look into getting one of the best photo organizing apps too.

1. Movavi Slideshow Maker 7: Best photo slideshow software overall

Why you can trust Top Ten Reviews Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

Movavi Slideshow Maker 7: Best photo slideshow software overall

Movavi Slideshow Maker 7

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Movavi Slideshow Maker 7 is a versatile photo slideshow software package that will get you good results in minutes, and excellent results the more you learn its tools and features. There's a handy montage wizard to get you started, and that may be all you need for most of the slideshows you end up creating - this is very simple to use, even though it has all the hallmarks of an actual video editor.

Movavi includes a whole variety of effects, transitions, and filters to make your slideshows stand-out, and you can use it for everything from fun social media fodder through to serious photo presentations. The more technical video effects like camera pans and zooms will give you more editorial control over your slideshow, while the effects, stickers, and animations will help you keep things entertaining. There are over 160 filters, and more than 100 animation effects, so you can really craft a variety of slideshows. It's ideal for weddings, graduation parties, birthdays and more, as well as more serious stuff like business presentations and showreels.

You can overlay music too, which draws from the library on your computer, and you can mix in videos with your photos if you want to create mixed media. Movavi exports to all the most common photo and video file types, so you don't need to worry about compatibility, and there's an option to save direct to a YouTube channel or - if you want to share on other social media - to Google Drive. The negatives? Well, some may never use many of the features, and could just use a free app, but anyone serious about making a quality slideshow will love what Movavi has to offer.

2. PhotoStage Slideshow 8: Best budget slideshow software

Photostage Slideshow 8: Best photo slideshow software on a budget

PhotoStage Slideshow 8

PhotoStage Slideshow 8 is one of the cheapest options for creating slideshows, and is very simple to use too. It lacks a handful of features you may find elsewhere, but has more than enough for most people to create excellent slideshows. We recommend it for anyone who isn't going to use all of the flashy graphics and transitions offered by other programs. There are no backgrounds, filters or themes, but there are plenty of transition effects to choose from. This includes more elaborate transitions like fading into the next image in the expanding shape of a heart or simply scrolling from one side of the screen to the other. You can make simple edits such as cropping and rotating your photos, and adjusting contrast, hue and brightness. We found the slideshow playback to be crisp and of good color quality in our tests. This software handles the most common audio and video formats, so you can spice up your slideshows with mixed media. The area where this slideshow software really falls short is in the help and support, but honestly, this program is so easy to use that you likely won't need to contact anyone at NCH for help.

In terms of export, you can save your slideshow as a variety of popular file types, or upload directly to YouTube, Vimeo, or Flickr. Or, if you want, you can save directly to your smartphone or tablet. Simple.

3. CyberLink PhotoDirector 12: Best editor with slideshow options

CyberLink PhotoDirector 12: Best photo slideshow software editing tools

CyberLink PhotoDirector 12

CyberLink PhotoDirector 12 has the right balance of features for anyone looking to create professional-looking slideshows. It's primarily a photo editor, with all the tools you'd expect from a full-featured photo enhancement program, but with the option to create slideshows via the 'Create' tab. The reason we recommend PhotoDirector above other photo editing apps is because it's simple to use and it helps you create incredible results with very little effort, even if it does lack some of the more advanced tools that professional editors need.

There are a whole host of tools for enhancing your photos, including things like dispersion effects, which give you the power to animate particles in your images with ease. This can add a serious wow-factor to your slideshows. There are also editing options for cropping, layers, background changes, and all kinds of creative effects to give your photos some zing.

As a slideshow creator it's simple to use, with various headers, overlays, transitions, and everything you need to craft a compelling presentation. Some who want basic options may find it overwhelming, despite its simplicity, so this really is for anyone looking to create pro-looking slideshows. And it's a little more expensive than some other options in our guide. However, there's no denying you get excellent results.

4. PixGram: Best slideshow app for Android devices

PixGram: Best photo slideshow software for Android

PixGram is one of the best slideshow apps if you want to simply create slideshows and montages on your smartphone. There's a free version and it covers you for almost all the features you need, although you're restricted to three-minute videos/slideshows until you purchase the premium version.

This one is primarily designed to help you set slideshows to music, and to share them direct to social media. You can import images and videos direct from your phone's gallery into the app, and combine it with any music you have purchased and saved to your device. There are plenty of filters to apply to your images, and a decent range of video editing options, but it does lack transitions. What matters most is that this is easy to use, and you can quickly share results to most of the popular social media platforms in a variety of aspect-ratios that each one supports. For example, the 16:9 format suits Facebook, while the 1:1 is perfect for Instagram.

There are definitely limitations here, and if you're using the free version you'll get in-app ads (much like you do in most free apps). Those looking for fancy transitions should consider other options, but anyone who wants to simply create slideshows and montages on their phone, without using a laptop or computer, should seriously consider PixGram.

5. PicPlayPost: Best slideshow app for Apple devices

PicPlayPost: Best photo slideshow software for Apple devices

PicPlayPost

PicPlayPost is a surprisingly powerful slideshow (and video) tool for iOS devices. It has a vast number of features, and can craft montages and slideshows in 1080p and 4K, if you have a compatible iPhone or iPad. You can download it for free, but this version is very limited, and you're definitely going to need to subscribe if you're looking to use the majority of the tools. This is expensive, at $6.99 per month (or an even higher one-time payment), so consider if you're really going to use it that much.

There are so many transitions, sticker, effects, and filters - you can get seriously creative with your slideshows and montages. It's simple to use, but there are loads of deep editing options for those who want to create professional-looking presentations and video montages. You can create gifs, slideshows, movies, and collage images, making this perfect for crafting memes too. The slideshows can last up to 30 minutes, and it'll access music from your device.

If you're constantly adding custom videos and slideshows to social media, this is probably worth the price of subscription, especially as you can create videos and images specifically formatted for social channels. If you're looking for something a little more simple, then this is probably a bit much (ironically, though, the free version doesn't offer enough for even basic use).

6. PhotoStory Deluxe: Best for beginners

PhotoStory Deluxe 2020: Best photo slideshow software for beginners

PhotoStory Deluxe

If you're new to the whole photo slideshow thing, and you want a no-nonsense piece of software for your home computer, then PhotoStory Deluxe is just the thing. There's a slideshow wizard to help get you started, and introduce you to most of the main features, and after that the interface is nice and simple. There's a built-in editor too, which lets you enhance and make basic edits to the images you've added, and while options here are relatively limited compared to other editing programs, there's enough here to make your slideshows look rather professional.

You can export your slideshows to most common formats, and there are options for VR slideshows and 360 videos, which is a nice touch. We love the travel map feature too, which allows you to create slideshows that show off all your vacation-snaps. The grandkids will love to see all of those!

There are options to upload your slideshows and videos direct to places like YouTube, although you retain the ability to burn them to a DVD too, in case you want to mail your substantial slideshows to friends, family, or clients. You can simply save them onto your home computer device too. While the editing tools lack features, and we do think this is mid-priced among slideshow creators, it's still worth considering if you're a newcomer seeking to create slideshows to thoroughly entertain your friends and family with.

What features should you look for in slideshow software?

Slideshow software does offer some photo editing options but these are basic and won't replace a fully fledged photo editor. So if you simply want to crop, rotate or remove the redeye from a picture, then this slideshow software may be enough. But for anything more complex you'll be left wanting.

A useful feature to look out for is the ability to arrange your photos by themes. This can help in making it easier to insert appropriate backgrounds and transitions for the slideshow.

The photo organizing software mentioned above can help as it allows you to cut down the images to the best ones only. Being concise is important for a slideshow where too many pictures - especially many similar ones - can really put people off.

Voiceover recording is a really helpful feature which can add another layer of context to what is being seen. Even more valuable if you're sending this to someone and you won't actually be there to explain what's being shown.

Talking of sharing, this is important so be sure your software can export in a file format that's easily accessible. MP4 is a common video file format that most devices will be able to open and more slideshow software should output to. Plus it condenses well meaning it can be sent without taking up too much space or time.

While most of these options are very intuitive, it can pay to have decent help and support, should you wish to try the more complex features on offer. So keep an eye out for this as a useful feature too.

Tips for creating a compelling slideshow

  • According to Memories Renewed , when it comes to slideshows ten to 12 images are typically displayed within a minute. This means that a 100-image slideshow will likely last ten to 12 minutes. Take this into account when creating your slideshows.
  • For an elegant slideshow, don’t use distracting transitions. Stick with a simple fade between images.
  • Choose music and images that are appropriate for the event. You don’t want to play raucous music or have disrespectful photos at a funeral, for example.
  • Know how the slideshow will be used. If it’s going to play in the background it can go on forever. However, if you’re going to draw everyone’s attention to it as a special presentation, keep it short and simple – three to five minutes. People typically don’t have long attention spans.
  • Add statements from loved ones, when appropriate, to make it extra special.
  • Make sure you run through the slideshow beforehand to make sure everything works properly. Fix any problems. This includes the transitions, graphics and music.

  • eLearning Development , Posts , PowerPoint

I recently created a photo slideshow (using PowerPoint) of my dad’s life-sized chess set sculpture that’s at Facebook (Go Dad!).

I found that PowerPoint was a surprisingly powerful slideshow creation tool.

And once I learned the basics, I was able to create my next slideshow in under 1 minute!

Below is what I learned, as well as some bonus lessons such as adding music, creating a custom title slide, saving the slideshow as YouTube video, and more.

Let’s go ahead and get started!

Video Tutorial

Here is a video that shows the entire process:

And if you want to watch the published version of the slideshow, you can watch it here:

Sculptures are by my dad,  Hardy Jones , and sculpture photos in the source files are courtesy of my good friend Erin Bibeau .

Screenshot and Text Tutorial

The screenshot version of the lessons are below and are organized into these sections:

  • Create slideshow in under 1 minute
  • Create a custom title slide
  • Set slide transitions
  • Improve image quality
  • Scale images to the edge of the slides
  • Add pan and zoom “Ken Burns” effect
  • Create scrolling credits
  • Save the PowerPoint slideshow as a video that you can upload to YouTube

Create a PowerPoint Slideshow in Under 1 Minute

To watch this section as a YouTube video, click here .

0. Start with a new presentation open in MS Powerpoint.

Note: I’m working in PowerPoint 2016, but the steps are similar for 2013 and 2011.

1. Insert a photo album to your presentation

Go to “insert” → “photo album” → “new photo album”., click on “file disk”., select the photos from your computer.

Note: You can hold down Ctrl while clicking several photos to select them individually

Click “Insert”

Click “create”, 2. add transitions to your slideshow.

Next you want to add transitions to your new photo album.

Click the first slide, then hold Shift while clicking the last slide to select the whole range of slides.

Go to “transitions” → click on the arrow to open up more choices., click on “random”., 3.  set the slides to advance automatically, from the “transitions” tab, check the “advance slide” “after” box., set it to 2 seconds (or whatever you want)., 4.  set the slideshow to loop continuously, go to “slide show” → “set up show”., turn on “loop continuously until ‘esc’”, then click “ok”., 5.  that’s it boom done in under 1 minute.

You’ve created a photo slideshow in PowerPoint in under 1 minute!

You can preview your slideshow with the preview button.

Advanced PowerPoint photo slideshow tips

The lesson above shows you how easy it is to create a photo slideshow in PowerPoint in under a minute.

But if you want to take it to the next level, you should continue reading below.

Advanced Tip 1: Create Custom Title Slide

The default title slide for a slideshow in PowerPoint is just a black slide with a text box.

I’d rather delete it than use the default view.

Or better yet, why not use an image from the slideshow with a text overlay? That’s what I’ll show you how to do below!

To watch this part of the lesson as a YouTube video, click here .

0. Start with the slideshow you created previously.

1. copy and paste a the template slide.

Note: You can download our free template here

The click the slide and using Ctrl + C to copy.

Then go to your own slide show, click on where you want to insert it, and hit Ctrl + V.

2.  Click on the new slide to select it and customize it.

You can change the text as you please.

You can also change the image by right-clicking on the image → “Change Picture”.

Click on “Work offline”.

Then select a photo and click “Open”.

Click on the eye icons next to “text” in the “Selection” pane to hide the text.

Click on the box to select it → right-click → “Format Shape”.

Adjust the transparency depending on how bright or dark your background photo is.

Click on the eye icons for “text” again to show the text and see the effect.

Advanced Tip 2: Add Music

0. start with the slideshow you created in ms powerpoint., 1. insert the music.

Go to “Insert” → “Audio” → “Audio on My PC”.

Select a music file and click “Insert”.

2. Adjust the playback settings

Go to “Playback” → select “Automatically” for “Start” so that the music plays on its own.

Check the box for “Play Across Slides”.

To hide the audio icon on the slide during the show, click on it to select it, then go to “Playback” → “Hide During Show”.

You can loop the music if you want by checking the box for “Loop until Stopped”.  This is optional.

3. Preview what it sounds like by clicking the preview button.

Advanced tip 3: transitions.

To watch the part of the tutorial as a YouTube video, click here.

0. Start with the slide show you created in MS Powerpoint.

1. select a slide to control the transition to  it (from the slide before it)..

Go to “Transitions” → click the arrow for more choices.

Click on the transition style you want (this also previews them so you can see what they look like).

Advanced Tip 4: Image Quality

To watch this part of the tutorial as a YouTube video, click here.

1. Turn off the compression of images

Go to “File” →  “Options”.

Then click on the “Advanced” tab and check the box for “Do not compress images in file”.  (Directly beneath it, leave the “Default resolution” at “High fidelity” for good quality.)  Turning off image compression helps a lot with zoom transitions of photos and when you enlarge photos, so that they don’t look pixelated.

Advanced Tip 5: Scaling Images

To watch this part of the tutorial as a YouTube video, click here .

Scaling photos will allow you to get rid of the empty spaces to the sides, like in the photo beneath.

1. Increase the size of the image to fill the workspace

Drag the image to the left (hold down left click on it) and align its left side with the edge.

Note: You may want to zoom out a little to make the next step easier.

Hold down shift and drag the lower right corner to resize it until it completely covers the empty space on the right.  (Holding down shift keeps the image in proportion when resizing it.)

Click on the image and drag it up a bit to position it as you like.

Note: I like to use the thumbnails on the left pane to see what the positioning looks like.

If you’re a perfectionist, you can optionally also crop the overhanging part of the image if you wish by going to “Format” → “Crop”.  It’s not really necessary, though.

2. Consider adding multiple photos for portrait oriented images

The image scaling method above is best suited to landscape pictures.  If you have a portrait picture, you might wish to try using 2 or more pictures instead to cover up the empty spaces.

Advanced Tip 6: Add “Ken Burns” Pan Zoom Effect

A “Ken Burns” effect is adding some motion to the photos in a storytelling slide show.  It’s an in-slide effect, unlike a transition.  In this example, the slide starts zoomed in, then zooms out.

1. Create both a “grow/shrink” and a motion path effect to the image

Go to “Animations” → “Animation Pane”

In the Animation Pane, there are 2 things that need to be set up:  a grow-shrink animation and a motion path.  You then start them at the same time so they both move and grow. (See video linked in show notes on how to do this in detail as this takes some tweaking.)

The image will actually need to be much larger than the viewable area.

To compare the image size to viewable area, go to the Selection Pane and click the eye icon for the picture.  This hides it.

You can now see the viewable area, which is quite small in comparison.

Advanced Tip 7: Add Scrolling Credits

Scrolling credits are the credits you list at the end of the video, auto-scrolling up.

1. Add a background color and a text box

Draw a black rectangle (or any color you wish) using the “Insert”->”Shape”->”Rectangle”

Create a text box with a contrasting color and insert your credits using “Insert”-> “Shape” -> “Textbox”

Move the text box below the entire slide

3. Add a line motion path animation to the text box

Note: Powerpoint actually has its own functionality for setting up credits, but it tends to stop in the middle if the credits are long.  So it’s more reliable just using a the line motion path described below.

Click on the text box to select it.  Then go to “Animations” → click on the arrow to expand the selection of animations.

Select “Lines” under “Motion Paths”.

3. Adjust the animation settings

The line will appear as a small vertical line with a green dot (where it starts) and red dot (where it ends).

You want it to travel up off the screen (scrolling up), so click on the red dot and drag it up above the slide.

Set the duration by going to “Animations” → “Duration”.  The duration will depend on how long your credits are.

Remove the “smooth start” and “smooth end” by going to “Animations” → “Animation Pane”.

In the Animation Pane, click on the arrow for the text box → “Effect Options”.

Set “Smooth start” and “Smooth end” to 0 seconds.  Click OK.

Advanced Tip 8: Save Slideshow As Video

One of the hidden features of PowerPoint is that you can save it out as a video. In my case, I wanted to save it as a video and upload it to YouTube. But you can also use it for other purposes as well.

1. Save your Powerpoint slideshow as a video

Go to “File” → “Save As” → “Browse”.

Under “Save as type”, change it from the default “PowerPoint Presentation” to “MPEG-4 Video”.  (MP4 is a video format that’s compatible with Youtube.)  Click “Save”.

You can track the progress for video conversion at the bottom.  It usually takes a few minutes, but can take longer depending on the length of your video and the speed of your computer.

Once your video is complete, navigate back to the folder where you saved it.

Bonus Templates and Files

If you’ve made it this far, you’re a rockstar and you deserve something special. 🙂

Why Use PowerPoint Photo Collage Templates?

How to Search for Free PowerPoint Photo Collage Templates

The most common use of Microsoft PowerPoint with photos is to use it as a photo album. PowerPoint ships with some default photo templates, but you can also use free templates in the Office Online Template & Themes gallery.

Follow these steps in Office 365. It should be similar for other versions of Microsoft Office as well.

  • You can tweak your slides further by applying Themes from the Design tab with just a click. A theme is a predefined combination of colors, fonts, and effects. Different themes are suitable for different slide layouts.

Tip: You can pin your favorite templates to the New screen.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

In her previous posts, Selin Tagmat of Mind Your Photos  has blogged about the basics of creating compelling slideshows, especially for Mac users. This week, she is back with another great post on this topic for those who love their PCs!  If you are looking to create a basic photo and video slideshow in Windows, give Microsoft Photos a try! It’s a native app that comes with the operating system for free!

Did You Know You Can Create Slideshows in Microsoft Photos?

Did you know that Microsoft Photos offers a slideshow feature? That’s right, last year  Microsoft decided to discontinue Windows Movie Maker  and instead introduce a new video editing feature in  Microsoft Photos . Although I normally use more advanced video editing tools for my slideshows, I like to stay on top of new updates and try out new features, so I know exactly what my native apps offer. I can say that t he video editor in this app is not a replacement for Windows Movie Maker, but it does offer basic video editing possibilities, so i f you want to create a simple slideshow with photos, videos, music, text and effects, it’s certainly worth a try.

Here’s how to create a slideshow with Microsoft Photos in 10 simple steps:

Step #1 – Prep Your Slideshow

As for any slideshow, the first step is to decide on the concept, outline and content. If you haven’t done so, I suggest you to have a look at my previous blog post ; it has some great tips to keep in mind when creating preparing a nice slideshow.

For this tutorial, I will create a slideshow to share photos and videos from a fun weekend trip. First, I selected around 45 photos and 3 videos for this slideshow, which I expect to be around 3 minutes long. Then, I saved everything in a dedicated folder and put it in order, ready to be imported into Microsoft Photos  (see below).

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

All slideshow content is saved in a dedicated folder, and arranged in the order based on the slideshow outline. Thanks to rawpixel for the photos and pexels for the videos!

Step #2 – Create a New Video Project

When you open the Microsoft  Photos app, you will see the photo management interface organized with either  Collection , Albums , People , and Folders , or (if you have the most updated version) Collection , Creations , and Folders .

  • Collection includes all your media organized by date.
  • Albums / Creations shows your albums and video projects.
  • People helps you to tag and organize photos accordingly.
  • Folders  shows media in a folder structure.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

This is the first screen you will see when you open the  Microsoft Photos app.

For video editing features, you should click on Create , which offers three options: Automatic video with music , Custom video with music , and Album . With the recent update, this menu has been replaced with Video Remix , Video projects and Album , so which menu you see depends on your version of the app.

  • Automatic video / Video remix : You select photos and videos, while the app arranges the content with a theme, effects and background music. You can edit it afterwards.
  • Custom video / Video projects : You import your photos and videos, arrange the order and duration of each item, and add music and effects yourself.
  • Album : This is available to organize your photos and videos into different albums.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

Click on “ Create” and select  “Custom video” to start creating your slideshow.

For this tutorial, I will create a custom video project to be able to show you all the features offered by the app. From my Microsoft Photos  experience so far, it’s easier to create a video project from scratch and to customize it according to my choices, rather than try to adjust and fix an automatically created video. Unfortunately, the automatic system isn’t good enough to make my life easier and my slideshow nicer.

Step #3 – Import Your Photos and Videos

Once you select the  Custom video / Video projects option, the  Microsoft Photos app will ask you to select what you’d like to add. That’s when you upload the photos and videos from the dedicated slideshow folder.

Go to Folders and click on Add a folder . Once you find and add your slideshow content folder here, you’ll see it under Folders from now on. Here, mine is named Weekend Slideshow .

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

Add your content folder to the project.

When you are in Folders , click on the folder where you have the slideshow content. Select all the photos and videos you want to include in your slideshow and click on Create . Then you will see a blue screen telling you that the app is creating a video from the selected items.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

Microsoft Photos creates a new video from your content folder when you click Create .

Once the app creates your video, you will see a new screen with a Project library on the top left, Storyboard at the bottom, and Preview on the top right. The app will immediately ask you to name your video.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

Name your new slideshow!

From now on, you don’t need to save your project as the app will automatically save it for you throughout your editing process. If you want to leave your video project and continue later, no problem, you can always find your video project under Albums .

Step #4 – Set Your Picture Aspect Ratio

The [picture aspect ratio defines the shape of the video display. The Microsoft Photos  video editor offers three picture aspect ratios to select from with “width:height” format:

  • 4:3 (standard TV format)
  • 16:9 (widescreen TV format)
  • Portrait (handy for social media shares)

For this tutorial, I selected the widescreen TV format.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

You can adjust the picture aspect ratio of your video from the top menu of the preview window.

Step #5 – Arrange Photos and Videos

Once you add your photos and videos, check to see if your storyboard is in good order. The  Microsoft Photos  app adds your content to the video project in chronological order – newest to oldest, or oldest to newest. If you have sorted your content based on the file name in your dedicated folder, then your order will be mixed up here. You’ll need to do a little manual work by dragging and dropping your photos and videos from one point to another on your storyboard.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

The  Microsoft Photos  app automatically adds your content to the storyboard with chronological order. Check if everything is in the right order, especially if your folder was arranged based on file names.

Want to get rid of a photo or video? Simply right click and select Remove it .

Want to add new content? Go to Project library and click on Add photos and videos . Add new content to the  Project library . Then drag and drop the new content from the  Project library to the Storyboard .

I’m a Perfect Pinnable!

Step #6 – Edit your photos

There is only a few smaller editing functions available in Microsoft Photos , so if you need more, I suggest you edit your photos and videos according to your usual workflow before starting the video creation process.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

Once you click on a photo on your Storyboard , you will see six editing options: Duration , Resize , Text , Filters , Motion , and 3D effects .

Here are the editing features you can expect to see in the Photos app:

When you upload your photos and videos, Microsoft Photos  will automatically decide on their duration. To be able to synchronize your music with the content and do some fine-tuning for the flow of your slideshow, you’ll need to adjust the duration of your photos manually. Click on Duration and either select a timing from the available menu, or add number of seconds manually. You can’t select multiple photos and adjust their duration with a single click; the app doesn’t offer that feature at this time. Instead, you have to adjust photos and videos one-by-one.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

Try adjusting the duration of your content manually!

Click on Resize . It’s by default in the Shrink to fit mode, which scales down your photo or video to fit the screen size you selected, all the while preserving the aspect ratio of your original content. As a result, you see two black bars on the sides. If you select Remove black bars , the app will crop your photo or video in such a way that you will not see black bars anymore. This achieves a more professional look. However, note that you can’t adjust which part of your photo will remain on screen when you remove the black bars, so occasionally the end result is undesirable because it doesn’t cover a meaningful portion of the photo. In case this happens, you’ll either need to leave the black bars intact, manually crop your photo to have the right size for your screen, or drop that photo from the composition altogether.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

Decide how you want to handle sizing issues!

When you click on Text , you’ll be able to add text to your photo, with different animated text styles and layout options.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

You can add text to your photo or video.

Click on Filter to be able to choose from a variety of filters. You don’t have to use one if your content is fine the way it is, but it’s helpful if you want to adjust color balance or saturation with one click.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

Use filters sparingly!

When you select Motion , you’ll see some basic panning and zooming options to add some motion to your stills. In more advanced video editing tools, you would select where to start and end this effect on your photos, so you’d have more control on the position and timing. In Microsoft Photos , however, you select the effect and it’s automatically applied by the video editor in a default way.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

You can add motion to stills on a basic level!

The video editor also has some 3D effects and objects that can be used for your slideshow. I would suggest not using these unless you have the intention of creating a more informal story. Nice and elegant looking slideshows usually have a cleaner look.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

Select 3D effects and then Effects , and you’ll see several effects that you can add to your photos or slides.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

If you select 3D effects and then 3D librar y, you’ll find a variety of 3D objects that you can insert onto your photo slides.

Step #7 – Editing Videos

Once you click on a video on your Storyboard , you’ll see similar editing options as those for your photos, except that Duration is replaced with Trim .

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

Once you click on a video on your Storyboard , you’ll see the available editing options for videos.

When you click on Trim , a new screen will appeari with two slides on your video timeline. You just need to select the portion of the video you want to keep by moving the sliders left or right. You can see the trimmed video length at top right. In all editing modes, don’t forget to click  Done  once you have adjusted your settings.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

Step #8 – Import Music

You music choice is very important. It’s one of the main aspects that will help you to connect emotionally with your audience. In other words, the wrong music can spoil the show. If you aren’t sure how to make your choice for the right type of music (something that matches the style and length of your slideshow and that is royalty free), have a look at the tips in my previous blog post .

Click on Music  (top right menu of the Microsoft Photos app), go to Your music and select your own music file to add it to your slideshow. You can also find a selection of built-in music offered by the app under the Recommended tab.  For this tutorial, I selected and downloaded a fast music by audionautix.com (“Latin House Bed”) with bright and uplifting tunes to match with the weekend fun effect.

How to Create a Photo & Video Slideshow with Microsoft Photos| OrganizingPhotos.net

Import your own music or select something from the library!

Step #9 – Synchronize Everything

If you select music from the built-in library, the app offers you the choice to automatically sync your video to that music’s beat.

On the other hand, if you import your own music, you’ll need to work on synchronizing the music and content manually. To be able to handle this in a practical and quick way, play your slideshow background music and identify the intervals of strong beats – basically where you would want to have your transition between photos and videos.

In my case, the best duration looked like 3 seconds for each photo and the multiple of 3 seconds for videos. I adjusted the duration of everything manually, previewed the whole slideshow to be sure that everything matched well, and did some small fine-tuning of durations where necessary.

Step #10 – Export and Share

Finished with your video editing? Click on the  Export or share button to export your video and pick from the three possible options:

  • Small (for email and small screens)
  • Medium (for sharing online)
  • Large (for big screens)

When your video is ready, it will be saved as an mp4 format in your Pictures folder under Exported videos . On the next screen, you’ ll have sharing options for Mail, Skype, YouTube, and OneNote.

Here you go! You can now watch the photo and video slideshow that I created with the Microsoft Photos app. Enjoy!

Beginner? Try It & Evaluate!

If you are already used to more advanced video editing tools, this app will be far from satisfying. In comparison to advanced tools, this app is not flexible enough, adjustments are often manual and time-consuming, and features are limited. In short, achieving a completely professional-looking slideshow with a perfect match of music, effects and transitions will be difficult. That being said, it will do the job without much of a learning curve, for free, and without the hassle of looking for other apps.  If you want to have a look at what makes a difference between slideshow created with a more powerful video editing tool, you can take a glance at the slideshow I created with iMovie for Mac in my previous blog post .

I hope this tutorial will help to those of you who were curious about how to create a simple photo and video slideshow in Windows. Stay tuned to learn about further video editing tools and tips to create nice slideshows on various devices – your computers, laptops, phones, tablets and alike!

What to Know

  • Select the Google Photos album that holds the images you want in your slideshow, then select your slideshow photos.
  • Next, select More Options (vertical three dots), and then choose Slideshow .
  • Tip: Create an album specifically for your slideshow so you can recreate it in the future.

This article explains how to make a simple slideshow of your favorite images in Google Photos . Information applies to Google Photos in a web browser. The Google Photos apps for iOS and Android currently don't offer slideshow functionality.

How to Create a Google Photos Slideshow

Here's how to create your simple Google Photos slideshow.

In Google Photos, select Albums in the sidebar and select the album that contains the photos you want in a slideshow.

Alternatively, you can create a new album specifically for your slideshow.

Select the photos you want to appear in the sideshow. Continue making selections until you have chosen all the photos you want to appear in the slideshow. When you choose photos for a slideshow, you can only select from photos in one album.

If you want to show off every photo in an album, bypass selecting specific photos and go straight to the three-dot icon to trigger a slideshow.

Select the three-dot icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

Choose Slideshow from the drop-down menu.

The slideshow shows all the chosen images in the album and starts automatically with a 5-second fade between photos.

Viewing a Google Photos Slideshow

While you can choose the photos that appear in a Google Photos slideshow, you can't otherwise customize it. The slideshow starts automatically, and you can't change the amount of time a photo is shown before fading into the next one. You also can't add or change music. All you can do is choose the album and the first photo of the slideshow.

Additionally, you can't change the order of the photos. If you create a new album for your slideshow, then the photos display from oldest to newest no matter what order you use when adding them to the album. You can't share your slideshow directly. You can show it off on a device that has Google Photos, or cast it to a Chromecast to show off your photos on a TV, but those are the only options.

This means that if you want a slideshow with all the bells and whistles, you want to look elsewhere. The Google Play Store has several alternatives available that allow you to add music or fine-tune the settings of your slideshow.

It's also worth remembering you won't be saving your slideshow separately. It works directly out of the album your slideshow photos are stored in (which is why you may want to create a new album for your slideshow).

If all that you really need is something that is simple and easy to use, then the slideshow from Google Photos is the best option. You can set up a slideshow in just seconds.

The process of deleting photos from Google Photos differs slightly depending on the platform. In a web browser, hover the cursor over the photo to delete and then select the gray checkmark in the top-left corner of the thumbnail. Select the trash can icon in the top-right of the window, then Move to trash to delete all selected images.

To select all of the photos in a given Google Photos album, hover the cursor over the first image and then select the gray checkmark in the corner of the thumbnail. Scroll to the last image in the album and hold Shift , then select the gray checkmark in the last photo's thumbnail to select all images in the album.

Move the cursor over a photo you want to copy, then select the gray checkbox that appears in the corner of the thumbnail. Repeat for all of the photos you want to copy, then select Download to save them to your computer.

How to create a slideshow from Google Photos or Google Drive

Your email has been sent

Image of Andy Wolber

If your images are in Google Photos or a folder on Google Drive, you have several ways to show a series of these images. Each method allows different degrees of control. For example, not every option lets you control auto-advance timing or play specific music or audio files with specific images. Any of the following options will help you create a slideshow of images.

How to create a slideshow from a Google Photos album in a browser

From a web browser, Google Photos offers a slideshow option. If you share a Google Photos album and allow other people to add photos, this can be a great way to display photos from different people.

To display a Google Photos album as a slideshow, first create an album and add photos. Then, with the album active, select the vertical three-dot menu and choose Slideshow ( Figure A ). The images will auto-advance every five seconds. An on-screen display includes pause, back, and forward controls. To show images in a different sequence, you may adjust the arrangement of the images within the album.

How to create a movie with Google Photos

The Google Photos web and mobile apps (Android and iOS) let you make a movie using photos and/or videos. To create a movie in mobile apps, select the three-dot menu in the upper right, then choose Movie. To create a movie from Google Photos in a browser, select the +Create option (to the right of the photo search box) then choose Movie. Select up to 50 photos and/or videos to include in your movie ( Figure B ). After you’ve selected your images, adjust the slider next to each item to change the on-screen duration of each, if you wish.

Your movie also may include music. You may choose the stock music offered within the app, or select and add your own audio file. Of course, you also may choose the No Music option.

How to select and show images with Chrome OS Gallery

If you use a Chromebook or other Chrome OS devices, the Files app includes a gallery feature with a slideshow option. To access it, open the Files app, which has a white folder with a blue background as an icon, then Ctrl-click on one or more images to select a set.

Right-click when you’re done, then choose Open With Gallery from the options. Wait a moment for the images selected to appear in the Gallery. Next, select the rectangle with an arrow that points to the right (in the upper right corner area) to display the images as a slideshow ( Figure C ). As within the Google Photos app, the images auto-advance every five seconds. You also may choose to pause or select right or left arrows to move through the images.

How to create a slideshow with Google Slides

For more precise control, you might use Google Slides. Although it takes a bit more work to add each of your images to a separate slide, you may find the timing options worth it. Where Google Photos and Chrome OS Gallery slideshows both auto-advance every five seconds, Slides offers auto-advance options of 1 minute or 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes. To enable auto-advance, select Present while in Slides on the web, then choose the sprocket (for settings). Choose Auto-Advance (When Played), then select a timing option ( Figure D ). You also may turn on the Loop option to cycle through the slides until manually stopped.

Google Slides also lets you insert audio on individual slides, with a variety of controls. See the “How to insert audio in Google Slides” section in How to use Google Slides enhancements for presentations for details.

How to make a slideshow with mobile apps

Third-party apps for Android and iOS give you greater control over auto-advance image pacing than Google’s own Photos, Gallery, or Slides options. On iOS devices, SoloSlides ($1.99) lets you select a Google Photos album for your slideshow and specify nearly any auto-advance time you desire. On Android, pFolio ($3.99) includes a slideshow option for Google Photos albums, where gFolio ($3.99) displays images from a folder you choose on Google Drive ( Figure E ).

For precise control over all aspects of images and music, you might turn to your preferred video editing app, such as Adobe Premiere Rush , Apple Clips , iMovie , KineMaster , or LumaFusion , among many others.

Create slideshows in Photos on Mac

In Photos, there are two ways to create slideshows:

Quickly play an instant slideshow of the photos from a day, complete with a theme and music.

Create and save a slideshow project. You select a group of photos, then add text, choose a theme, add music, and set how long each slide appears. You can export a slideshow project to play it on a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV.

The Photos window showing a slideshow in the main part of the window, with the Preview button, Play button, and Loop button under the main slideshow image, thumbnails of all the images in the slideshow at the bottom of the window, and at the right, the Theme button, Music button, and Duration button.

Play an instant slideshow

When you play an instant slideshow, you can select a theme and music for the slideshow, but you can’t customize the slideshow further.
