health is wealth essay

Introduction

Life is about striking a balance between certain fundamental parts of life. Health is one of these aspects. We value health in the same way that we value time once we have lost it. We cannot rewind time, but the good news is that we can regain health with some effort. A person in good physical and mental health may appreciate the world to the fullest and meet life’s problems with ease and comfort. Health is riches implies that health is a priceless asset rather than money or ownership of material possessions. There is no point in having money if you don’t have good health.

Key Elements Of A Healthy Lifestyle

If you wish to acquire a healthy lifestyle, you will certainly have to make some changes in your life. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle demands consistent habits and disciplined life. There are various good habits that you can adopt like exercising regularly which will maintain your physical fitness. It also affects your mental health as when your appearance enhances, your confidence will automatically get boosted.

To live a healthy life, one must make some lifestyle modifications. These modifications can include changes to your food habits, sleeping routines, and lifestyle. You should eat a well-balanced, nutrient-dense diet for your physical wellness.

Further, it will prevent obesity and help you burn out extra fat from your body. After that, a balanced diet is of great importance. When you intake appropriate amounts of nutrition, vitamins, proteins, calories and more, your immune system will strengthen. This will, in turn, help you fight off diseases powerfully resulting in a disease-free life.

Above all, cleanliness plays a significant role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Your balanced diet and regular exercise will be completely useless if you live in an unhealthy environment. Benefits Of A Healthy Lifestyle

As it is clear by now, good health is a luxury which everyone wants but some of them cannot afford. This point itself states the importance of a healthy lifestyle. When a person leads a healthy lifestyle, he/she will be free from the tension of seeking medical attention every now and then.

my health is my wealth essay

On the contrary, if you have poor health, you will usually spend your time in a hospital and the bills will take away your mental peace. Therefore, a healthy lifestyle means you will be able to enjoy your life freely. Similarly, when you have a relaxed mind at all times, you will be able to keep your loved ones happy. A healthy individual is more likely to fulfil all of his goals because he can easily focus on them and has the energy to complete them. This is why the proverb “Health is Wealth” carries so much weight.

A socially healthy individual is one who is able to interact effectively and readily connect with others. Without his ego, he can easily blend with the person in front of him, exuding a nice feeling and energy.

Every human being should participate in sports and activities to get away from the monotony of daily life. It is because sports and games assist in instilling a sense of oneness in people, build leadership skills, and make a person absolutely disciplined.

Moreover, a healthy lifestyle will push you to do better in life and motivate you to achieve higher targets. It usually happens that people who are extremely wealthy in terms of money often lack good health. This just proves that all the riches in the world will do you no good if there is an absence of a healthy lifestyle.

In short, healthy life is the highest blessing that must not be taken for granted. It is truly the source of all happiness. Money may buy you all the luxuries in the world but it cannot buy you good health. You are solely responsible for that, so for your well-being and happiness, it is better to switch to a healthy lifestyle.

Following are a few key points and health tips that parents should remember for their children:

  • Never allow your children to get by without nutritious food. Fruits and vegetables are essential.
  • Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, therefore teach them to frequently wash their hands and feet.
  • Sleep is essential for your child.
  • Make it a habit for them to drink plenty of water.

In this chaotic and digital world, the phrase “health is wealth” holds great importance. It reminds us that having good health is the foundation on which a fulfilling life is built.

Speaking of the advantages of having good health, it allows us to enjoy life to the fullest. Without having a healthy mind and body the whole process becomes elusive.

Moreover, success and productivity depend on being in excellent health. It enables people to achieve their goals, work productively, and give back to society. An unwell person frequently encounters obstacles that prevent them from realising their hopes and dreams.

Keeping one’s health is also an investment in the future. Essay on Health is Wealth in 300 Words

Health is riches, after all. This proverb, which emphasises the critical necessity of health in one’s life, is full of timeless wisdom. It is simple to ignore the priceless gem that good health represents in a world that is focused on material prosperity and material interests.

First and foremost, being healthy helps people to live happy and fruitful lives. It serves as the cornerstone on which all other accomplishments are constructed. When someone is in good health, they have the vigour, strength, and stamina to achieve their aspirations, objectives, and ambitions. Poor health, on the other hand, can be a formidable obstacle that restricts one’s potential and prospects.

Additionally, having good health results in a higher quality of life. Healthy people require fewer medical procedures and are less in pain and suffering. They can enjoy life’s simple pleasures like spending time with loved ones, going outside, and eating good food without worrying about their diet.

The state of one’s health is crucial to their mental well-being. Mental health and physical well-being are tightly related. An emotionally stable and resilient state of mind is frequently a byproduct of physical health. The importance of health in one’s entire well-being is further highlighted by the fact that poor health can result in stress, worry, and depression.

The economic effects of health are another important factor. People who are in good health tend to be more productive at work, which increases earnings and improves financial security. On the other hand, health issues can cause medical expenses and decreased earning potential, which can have a considerable influence on one’s financial security.

The term “health is wealth” embodies a profound truth, to sum it up. The most valuable asset a person can have is good health because it supports all other facets of life. It enables people to live fulfilling lives, pursue their aspirations, and maintain their mental and emotional health. As a result, we must give our health priority and make the necessary investments because it is the only type of wealth that will never be exceeded or replaced by worldly belongings.

Essay on Health is Wealth in 400 Words

The proverb “Health is Wealth” maintains a special place in our lives. It emphasises how important good health is as the cornerstone of a successful and joyful life. The genuine meaning of riches is frequently missed in today’s fast-paced society when success is frequently gauged in monetary terms. This essay explores the deep significance of this adage and shows how true it is that the best asset anyone can have is their health.

Here are all the benefits one gets:

Physical Well-Being

Being physically healthy is the same as being in good health. Our bodies perform at their peak when we are healthy, enabling us to go about our daily lives with vigour and enthusiasm. A productive existence is built on a foundation of physical fitness. It makes it possible for us to work effectively, pursue our objectives, and fully appreciate life. Even the most plentiful wealth becomes meaningless in the absence of health.

Mental Health

In addition to physical health, mental health is a critical element of our entire prosperity. Ageless wisdom is having a good mind and a healthy body. Our cognitive functioning, emotional stability, and resiliency in the face of difficulties are all influenced by our mental health. Material prosperity can become a cause of stress and unhappiness in the absence of mental wellness.

Economic success

Economic success is directly correlated with good health. People may actively participate in the workforce and make more money when they are healthy. Healthier populations are also less financially burdened by healthcare expenses, releasing funds for other basic requirements. As a result, investing in healthcare is an investment in the prosperity of a country.

Life Quality

The genuine wealth of life is found in its excellence. A person in good health can enjoy life’s joys, go on trips, engage in hobbies, and spend time with loved ones. No amount of money can replace the richness that these experiences bring to life. Healthy people are better able to live fulfilling and pleasurable lives.

To conclude, the motto “Health is Wealth” perfectly describes what a prosperous life entails. While having material possessions is necessary for comfort and security, how we use and enjoy our wealth is ultimately influenced by our health. Given that health is the foundation upon which all other types of wealth are formed, investing in it should be a top priority. One must understand that health is the ultimate treasure that neither money nor anything else can ever fully replace or imitate to truly understand its worth. Therefore, let us never lose sight of the fact that our health is the most priceless asset we have when pursuing success and happiness.

On April 7, 1950, the Globe Health Organization (WHO) held the first World Health Day to bring global health to the attention of the entire world. The World Health Organization (WHO) selects a new public awareness subject each year, such as “Support Nurses and Midwives” in 2020. This is consistent with COVID-19’s condition, in which healthcare personnel save lives day and night without regard for their own health. The WHO also runs a global health promotion effort to promote equality so that people can take charge of their lives and consider their fitness, because “every life matters.” In schools, colleges, workplaces, and many community activities, the government promotes a variety of health programmes, including food security, workplace quality, and health literacy.

Health is Wealth Essay in 150 to 250 words

Children’s Well-Being Physical and mental wellness are essential for children. Children are losing their most valuable asset, their health, as a result of increased study pressure and over-indulgence in contemporary technologies. They rarely play in playgrounds these days, preferring junk food and spending more time in front of the television. These bad habits are gradually destroying their health. Parents should focus on their children’s physical and mental health from an early age, instilling positive habits for living a healthy lifestyle. The importance of cleanliness in preserving good health cannot be overstated. Bathing every day, washing hands before meals, brushing twice a day, and changing clothes on a regular basis are all good habits to develop.

Children and their parents’ excessive use of a computer, cell phone, and the Internet has resulted in sad faces in society. They are continually using these electronic devices, completely oblivious to the idea that they may be hazardous to their health. Teenagers who are immersed on their electronic devices are regularly detected, resulting in disasters. Anxiety and animosity are typically associated with the use of technological devices. Cancer, vision loss, weight gain, and insomnia have all been related to excessive use of these products. Emotional development is another important factor to consider because it influences whether or not a person is healthy. A person who is emotionally healthy should have a strong sense of reasoning, awareness, and a realistic attitude.

Health is considered to be the Wealth due to various reasons. One of the key reasons for being healthy is that  if we are not well, we cannot enjoy our wealth, fame, or power. Keeping active and healthy is no longer a choice, but rather a must.

Health is Wealth Essay

A well-known proverb that emphasises the value of health and demonstrates that health equals wealth. Wealth is meaningless to us if we are not well or not feeling good in a condition of physical, mental, and social well-being. We must constantly be in good health. Health is therefore more valuable than material things. Here are a few sample essays on health is wealth.

100 Words Essay On Health Is Wealth

200 words essay on health is wealth, 500 words essay on health is wealth.

Health is Wealth Essay

Only excellent health accompanies us in both good and terrible circumstances, thus health is wealth. In difficult circumstances, no one in this world can assist us. Therefore, if our health is excellent, we can handle any difficult situation. In order to enjoy life, one must be healthy or else, they would have health-related or other challenges. We need to have a good lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, engaging in daily exercise, breathing fresh air and drinking clean water, maintaining excellent posture, getting adequate sleep and relaxation, and keeping ourselves clean in order to preserve good health. If one is unhealthy, one will have problems with their health or other aspects of life.

Health was once defined as “the ability of an organism to function normally”. However, the definition of health has evolved over time. Being healthy does not necessarily mean physical fitness. Rather, it refers to a state of health, including emotional, mental and social stability. Health is the source of true wealth. A healthy body contains key elements that are essential for the proper functioning of the body. Physical health is the first important factor. Physical well-being is the state of having a healthy body free from disease. People tend to live longer when their bodies are healthy.

A balanced diet is the best way to keep your body healthy. Consuming the right amount of nutrients you need gives you better control over your physical health. Regular exercise is the next very important factor. Don't forget to exercise, even for 10 minutes, to keep your body in shape. Eating junk food all the time is not a good idea. Consuming alcohol and smoking is harmful to your health. Finally, make it a daily priority to get enough sleep (7-8 hours) before using your phone. The best recommendation is to put your phone away two hours before bedtime.

You may have heard the phrase "health is wealth" as a child, but most people still don't understand what it means. Most people equate health with freedom from disease. It may be so in some cases, but health is much more than that. To live a healthy life, you need to be physically and mentally healthy. For example, if one eats junk food all the time and doesn't get sick, that person is not healthy.

In the last century, great efforts have been made to promote physical health. However, overcoming psychological challenges is still lagging behind. According to the World Health Organization, mental health problems account for 47% of disabilities in life when calculated as the number of days people are unable to function normally in their daily lives.

Importance Of Health

Maintaining good health is very important.

Longevity | A person's daily life is affected by an unhealthy lifestyle. Getting the right nutrients helps your body stay healthier and live longer.

Eliminate illness | The key to a healthy life is a strong immune system that can fight off many diseases. The immune system functions as the body's natural defence system against intruders that can harm the body. Maintaining physical and mental health is essential for complete well-being

Short Essay On Health Is Wealth

The saying “health is wealth” is a well-known adage that highlights the importance of good health in our lives. This saying is a reminder that without good health, all other aspects of life, such as wealth, relationships, and personal fulfillment, are meaningless. In this essay, we will examine why health is indeed wealth and why it is essential to prioritize one’s health above all else.

Good health is a foundation for a happy and fulfilling life. It enables individuals to engage in physical and mental activities, to work and contribute to society, and to enjoy life’s pleasures and experiences. On the other hand, poor health can cause physical and mental suffering, limit one’s ability to participate in life, and result in significant financial costs for medical treatment. Thus, it is evident that good health is not only essential for personal well-being but also for one’s financial stability and success.

Another reason why health is wealth is that it contributes to our overall happiness and well-being. Good health allows us to perform our daily tasks with ease and to enjoy the people and experiences that bring us joy. On the other hand, poor health can have a negative impact on our mental health, leading to feelings of sadness, anxiety, and hopelessness. Thus, good health is crucial for maintaining a positive outlook on life and experiencing happiness and fulfillment.

However, maintaining good health is not always easy. It requires discipline, effort, and a commitment to making healthy lifestyle choices. This includes eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, getting enough sleep, and avoiding unhealthy habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Making these choices can be challenging, but the benefits to one’s health and well-being are undeniable.

In conclusion, health is indeed wealth, as it is the foundation for a happy, fulfilling, and productive life. It enables individuals to engage in physical and mental activities, to work and contribute to society, and to enjoy life’s pleasures and experiences. Maintaining good health requires effort and discipline, but the benefits are well worth it, making it essential to prioritize one’s health above all else.

Long Essay On Health Is Wealth

Health is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of our lives. But what does it truly mean to be healthy? In this essay, we will explore the concept of health and wealth and how they are intertwined in our lives. We will also look at the various ways in which we can achieve a healthy balance between both these states of being.

Introduction

We all know the popular saying “health is wealth”. But what does this actually mean? Is health really more important than money? In this essay, we will explore the meaning of this proverb and discuss why health is indeed wealth.

First of all, let’s look at the definition of health. Health is not just the absence of disease or illness; it is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. This means that if we are healthy, we are not just free from sickness but we are also able to lead happy and fulfilling lives.

Now let’s compare this to wealth. Wealth can be defined as an abundance of resources or assets. While having a lot of money may make our lives easier in some ways, it does not necessarily guarantee us happiness or good health. In fact, research has shown that there is no direct correlation between wealth and happiness.

So, if wealth does not equate to happiness or good health, why is health still considered to be more important than wealth? There are a few reasons for this:

1) Health is essential for our survival whereas wealth is not. We cannot live without our health but we can live without money.

2) Good health allows us to enjoy our lives and do the things we love whereas poor health can limit us in many ways. It can make it difficult to work, play sports or even just go for a walk outside.

3 ) Wealth can be lost or taken away, but good health is something that we have control over. We can make lifestyle choices that will help us to stay healthy and happy.

These are just a few of the reasons why health is more important than wealth. So, if you want to be truly rich and enjoy a good quality of life, it is essential to take care of your health first.

Definition of Health Is Wealth

It is often said that health is wealth. This means that having good health is more important than anything else because without it, we would not be able to enjoy our wealth or anything else in life. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Therefore, health is not just the absence of illness but a state of overall wellbeing.

There are many factors that contribute to good health such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding harmful substances like tobacco and alcohol. You can also help to protect your health by getting vaccinated against preventable diseases and by practising safe sex.

Having good health allows us to live our lives to the fullest and enjoy all that life has to offer. It also enables us to work towards our goals and dreams. On the other hand, poor health can lead to pain, suffering and an early death. It is therefore clear that health is indeed wealth.

Reasons why Health is Wealth

There are many reasons why health is wealth. One reason is that if you have good health, you can enjoy your life and do the things you love. Good health also allows you to be more productive in your work and contribute more to society. Additionally, good health can help you avoid costly medical bills and time off from work due to illness. Finally, good health means feeling good mentally and emotionally, which leads to a happier life overall.

Impact of health on physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing

It is often said that health is wealth. This is because our health has a direct impact on our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. When we are physically healthy, we have the energy and stamina to pursue our goals. We are also able to withstand stress and illness better. Mental health refers to our ability to cope with life’s challenges and maintain a positive outlook. Emotional wellbeing encompasses our capacity for joy, love, and meaningful relationships.

When our health is poor, we may not have the same level of energy or motivation. We may also be more susceptible to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Our relationships may suffer as well. It is important to remember that our physical, mental, and emotional health are all interconnected. If one area is struggling, it can have a ripple effect on the others.

There are many things we can do to promote good health. Eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and managing stress are all important components of a healthy lifestyle. Taking steps to improve your health can have a positive impact on your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

Benefits of good health

It is very important to be physically and mentally healthy. Being healthy means being able to do the things you want to do in life. It also means feeling good about yourself. There are many benefits of good health.

Some of the benefits of good health are:

1) Good health enables you to lead a productive and fulfilling life.

2) Good health gives you the energy and strength to do the things you enjoy.

3) Good health reduces stress and anxiety and helps you relax more.

4) Good health improves your mood and makes you feel happier.

5) Good health boosts your immune system and helps you fight off diseases.

6) Good health helps you maintain a healthy weight.

Tips to maintain good health and wealth

There are various tips to maintain good health and wealth. However, some of the most important ones are as follows:

1. Eating healthy and nutritious food is one of the key factors to maintain good health and wealth. One should include a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, etc., in their diet.

2. Exercising regularly is another important aspect to keep oneself healthy and wealthy. It helps in keeping the body fit and active and also reduces the risk of various diseases.

3. Managing stress levels is also crucial for maintaining good health and wealth. Stress can have a negative impact on both physical and mental health, so it is important to find ways to relax and de-stress.

4. Getting enough sleep is also very important for good health and wealth. A person should aim for around 8 hours of sleep every day to stay healthy and productive.

5. Finally, it is also essential to have positive thinking and a positive outlook towards life. This helps in keeping the mind healthy and happy, which eventually leads to good physical health as well.

It is important to remember that health is wealth; without good physical and mental health, life can be difficult. We should take care of our bodies by eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and avoiding harmful activities like smoking or drinking alcohol. Taking time for yourself to relax and enjoy your hobbies is also essential in maintaining a positive outlook on life. Health really does contribute greatly to overall happiness, so make sure you prioritize it in your day-to-day lives!

How do you lead a Healthy Lifestyle?

If you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, you need to be consistent in your habits. You also need to be disciplined to follow your routines. We have mentioned a couple of things which will help you achieve this.

  • The first habit you need to adopt is daily exercise. Physical fitness is really important for your strength of body and mind. It helps you gain confidence and makes you a stronger individual. Investing ten minutes to go for a walk or to climb up and down the stairs can be helpful.
  • Yoga and meditation can also work wonders. They not only bring inner peace but also benefit your overall health. Spending time outside in the presence of nature can relieve stress. They work wonders on people suffering from depression and anxiety.
  • Keeping your body hydrated is a must. We should drink seven to eight glasses of water throughout the day. This is beneficial for our internal organs and also for our skin.
  • A balanced meal is greatly required for leading a healthy life. Our entire metabolism depends on it. You should eat fresh fruits and green vegetables. You should also include supplements of high protein, vitamins, and minerals in your diet. Nutritious food helps you fight against diseases.
  • Skipping meals is not a good practice. Avoid excessive dieting. People these days tend to strain themselves with extreme diets. This may lead to heavyweight loss and severe conditions like anorexia.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol, cigarettes or drugs. They take a toll on your mental health and can also destroy your lungs and liver.
  • Good hygiene is equally important. Living in an unhealthy environment lowers your immunity and makes you prone to ailments. Thus, cleanliness is vital for maintaining a healthy life. An adequate amount of sleep is required for our body to function properly. You must sleep at least six to eight hours a day.
  • Do not over stress yourself. You must socialise with your friends and family. When you feel anxious, talking about it helps. It keeps your mind calm and makes you relaxed.
  • Visiting a doctor for a timely medical checkup is important. Try to fix an appointment every two to three months. This will ensure your health is on the check and will prevent health ailments.

The norm is to multitask, attempting to meet our responsibilities for various aspects of life. In this struggle, we often overlook making time for ourselves, leading to increasing stress levels.

We may not realize the consequences until one day we face a major health issue, reminding us of the importance of taking care of ourselves. In contrast, in earlier times, life was simpler with moderate working hours, more physical activity from walking and domestic tasks, and a balanced lifestyle with home-cooked meals. However, modern conveniences like cars and household equipment have reduced physical exertion while the demand for longer working hours results in late nights and reliance on fast food. The lack of exercise and sunlight also contribute to unhealthy living conditions and increases the risk of various diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart attacks, and hypertension.

Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize our health just as much as our work by moderating our diet, exercising daily, and maintaining a balanced work-life schedule. In this essay , we explore why health is wealth and why it is crucial to prioritize our physical and mental well-being in order to lead a fulfilling and happy life. With quotes and insights, we delve into the importance of good health and the impact it has on our lives.

Health is Wealth Essay

As the famous saying goes, “Health is wealth”. This phrase may seem simple and straightforward, but it holds a profound truth that often goes unnoticed in our fast-paced and high-stress lives. In today’s world, success and material wealth are often considered to be the benchmarks of a fulfilling life. However, the reality is that no matter how much money or success one has, it means nothing if their health is not in good condition. In this essay, we will explore why health is indeed wealth, and why it is crucial to prioritize our physical and mental well-being in order to lead a fulfilling and happy life.

Physical health, which refers to the functioning of the body and its various systems, is essential for leading an active and fulfilling life. It allows us to perform our daily activities with ease, and to engage in the things we enjoy. Without good physical health, even simple tasks can become a struggle, and our quality of life can be severely impacted. As the body ages, it becomes even more important to prioritize our physical health, as it becomes more susceptible to illness and injury. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can help to prevent many chronic diseases and improve our overall physical well-being.

“Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.” – John F. Kennedy

Mental health is equally as important as physical health, and it is crucial for our overall well-being. Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being, and it plays a critical role in determining how we think, feels, and behave. Poor mental health can lead to a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, and even suicide. On the other hand, good mental health allows us to lead a happy and fulfilling life, and to cope with the challenges that life throws our way. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and social support can all help to improve our mental well-being.

“The greatest wealth is health.” – Virgil

Physical and mental well-being are intertwined, and it is essential to prioritize both in order to lead a fulfilling and happy life. Health is Wealth Essay in English (900+ Words)

Taking care of our health is crucial for leading a prosperous life. Unlike other creatures, humans are known for their exceptional intelligence, which allows them to control nature. However, our mental and physical well-being must be maintained to stay fit and healthy. It is said that “Health is wealth,” as regular exercise helps us stay fit and keeps our minds sharp. Good health ensures a lively and active mind and affects our emotional well-being.

Recent studies indicate that the fast-paced lifestyle of today’s world has resulted in various health problems, such as heart and neurological disorders. Maintaining good health enables us to maintain a positive outlook on work and life in general.

Regardless of the difficulties and obstacles we face, life should be lived happily and positively. To enjoy life’s pleasures, we need the energy and enthusiasm that only a healthy body can provide.

Maintaining good health for children begins from their infancy and relies heavily on the health of their mother and the cleanliness of their environment. A balanced diet containing essential nutrients is crucial for both the mother and the baby. It’s vital to prevent serious diseases like polio, diphtheria , and typhoid to keep children healthy.

Parents cherish their children and hope for their physical and mental growth. While it’s their primary responsibility to care for their children, everyone else is equally responsible for ensuring their good health. Children are the future of the country and society, so it’s essential to provide them with adequate care.

A healthy child grows into a healthy adult. A well-rounded development during childhood lays the foundation for their future capabilities and contributions to society. Therefore, it’s beneficial for educators, neighbors, friends, athletes, teachers, physical and mental trainers, the media, social workers, doctors, and gymnasts to play an active role in inspiring children toward good health.

In school, children have the opportunity to develop both their physical and mental capabilities. Good health has always been essential, but it’s even more critical in this competitive age where modern requirements demand it. Nowadays, life is fast-paced and stressful, starting from an early age.

The educational curriculum is extensive, and children are expected to meet high standards, with competitions becoming more challenging every day. Under these conditions, students need to study hard and sit in the classroom for long periods. Therefore, educational institutions should prioritize physical exercise and entertainment programs for students to learn well and maintain good health.

A good school or educational institution is one that provides students with adequate facilities for sports and other activities that promote physical exercise and entertainment. After long periods of mental work, students need outdoor exercise to refresh their minds.

A young person with a good academic record and sound health is more likely to achieve their goals in life, regardless of their chosen career. Good education and good health enable people to face challenges with confidence, leading to progress and the desired outcome.

Having good health is essential for better performance and outcomes in life, regardless of the profession one belongs to. Both physical and mental health are equally significant in this regard. Everyone should prioritize taking care of their health to become a result-oriented individual.

Even an unskilled person can manage their job well with the help of good health. We can observe several physically fit individuals working on farms all day, using their energy to earn a living for themselves and their families. This gives them mental satisfaction and a restful night’s sleep. Furthermore, a physically strong and intelligent person can provide better assistance to society and gain appreciation from others.

Several professions require good health as the primary eligibility criterion. A well-built and mentally fit individual can perform better in the armed forces, paramilitary, police, and other similar forces. We have seen numerous individuals in these forces decorated with awards for their extraordinary performance and heroic acts under incredibly challenging conditions.

There are several job opportunities available for healthy individuals. Even in the private sector, where professional skill is the primary criterion, companies seek individuals with a strong and healthy appearance. Good health has extraordinary value everywhere, and it pays off for an individual throughout their life.

When a person’s mind is filled with disappointment and negativity, it shows on their face. On the other hand, a healthy mind with positive thoughts brings a sparkle to their face. The connection between the mind and body is strong, and they continuously influence each other. If not controlled, they can trigger a cycle of reactions.

Good health is valuable and should be improved, especially in areas where people are suffering due to the lack of healthcare facilities. In many rural areas, hospitals run without doctors and medicines, and people with multiple diseases or injuries do not receive proper treatment. The cost of treatment in private hospitals for major diseases is too high for poor people to afford.

Improving healthcare facilities alone cannot solve the issue. People need to be aware of the importance of regular physical exercise for sound health and efficiency at work. Joining gymnasiums and yoga camps can also help improve health. This can inspire others to adopt healthy habits and stay disease-free.

If a person can free their mind from negative thoughts like self-indulgence, they can motivate themselves to improve their body. This can help them overcome illnesses that have psychological origins. Good health can lead to a better mind.

When we die nothing stays with us and in turn, wealth is also of no value then. Exercising, eating healthy foods, avoiding junk food, and maintaining a properly balanced diet would let set an invaluable asset in us. Therefore, when a plant is planted the most care is taken of its roots. In the same manner, if we need to take care of our wealth we need to take utmost care of our health.

It is health that lets you be immortal, it is your health that lets you smile happily each day and live the greatest heights of yourself. So, health is the biggest luxury in life. Maintaining good health is one of the tough factors that One has to go through. One needs to maintain fitness by regularly doing exercises, drinking good water and healthy food each day. If one maintains a happy healthy state then one needs to maintain the body.

Stop trying to be lazy, because being lazy will never let anyone fetch his dreams. Try to be very prompt and be conscious of your mind. ESSAY FOR CLASS 12th/ COLLEGE/PROFESSIONAL FIELD:

The older the proverb  ‘health is wealth ‘becomes the newer the significance of it is being defined. The connotation of ‘ health is wealth ‘ apparently seems to be very simple that is physical fitness which should be our prime concern since it is the most precious gift of God. but in the modern epoch does the meaning of the proverb is still confined to sound health only?  The controversy arises and rarely does it stop.

Physical fitness may be the mark of good health and it is the most expensive asset that a mortal possesses. It is a temple as has been defined by Shakespeare since it is the platform of maintaining spiritual thoughts and ideas too. A  healthy body is a containment zone of the strength of mind and positive energy.

If we flip through the pages of our medication practices of ancient times, the grand contribution in this field was made by Charaka and Sushruta & there in the Ayurvedic practices did advise us to keep our body and mind feet and fine all the time .it  is often heard ‘ early to bed and early to rise to keep the body healthy wealthy and wise’ so waking up early in the morning and doing some exercises and walking for half an hour at least may not adversely affect anyone’s body, rather it makes one vibrant and vivacious.

Regular taking a bath, washing clothes is another good habit which may prevent one from being affected by any serious illness. Food habit is another part which should be taken into account to leave lively and jovial. Junk food adds spicy food may not help to build a strong body and mind. According to the Gita, food habit matters a lot in the formation of a person’s personality.

The people who are prone to fresh and pure food grow as Swastik and those who like spicy food along with non-veg, grow as Rajasik and while others are interested in decayed and stale food, they are known as tamarisk to mask. So a person’s intellectual growth depends on his food habit which ultimately leads to his all-around development. The mere absence of ailment may not lead to a happy or healthy life of him. This, in order to be healthy on, has to be mentally, intellectually, emotionally, socially, and spiritually healthy.

Due to the excessive use of a computer, mobile and Internet by the children and their parents are dark faces is being witnessed by society. Becoming quite an oblivion of the fact that these electronic goods may damage their health, they are frequently using it. Teenagers are often found to be busy with their electronic goods and met with accidents.

Anxiety and aggression are the fruit of the frequent use of electronic products. The excessive use of these items often leads to cancer, loss of vision, weight gain, and insomnia.

Emotional development is another important factor that cannot be overlooked it makes an individual a healthy one. An emotionally healthy person should have a good sense of reasoning, realization, and a realistic approach.

A socially healthy person can be one who has the ability to communicate properly and connect himself with others easily. Forgetting his ego he can easily mix with the person in front with a positive vibe and energy. To maintain a healthy relationship with the person in particular and society as a whole. He treats others with dignity and honors ultimately derives all sorts of pleasure and happiness in life. Thus he freezes him from all kinds of diseases and negativity.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy which indicates that only work or study may not help a person to lead a very happy life rather it makes life very monotonous and boring to get relief out of it or from the boredom of daily or routine life sports and games cannot be ignored rather it plays a major role for the development of an individual.

Each and every human being should join in sports and games and get free themselves from the daily boring routine life. It is because sports and games help man to evoke a spirit of unity, develop leadership quality and make a man perfectly disciplined man aims to accumulate wealth to become rich. Everyone dreams of having a treasure trove and becoming a millionaire but if a man loses his health all his dreams shattered and efforts were undertaken during his life go in the way.

So always care for health, as you care for wealth because health is wealth.

The term is coined by the famous counselor and guide, Ralph Waldo Emerson.

If a man starts to choose to live a lifestyle without a plan or in an unhealthy manner then, he has to face a lot of problems. Mentally he would be depressed and physically he would be untidy and dirty and emotionally he would be always unstable. An unhealthy life would let a person wake up late at night and wake up late in the morning. This would not only swing their mental state but also pollute their environment. One would face a lot of anger and sorrow and sometimes they would have fits.

Each year on the seventh of April, the whole world celebrates World Health Day as a recognition of the biggest precious gift of this life.

Essay on Health

Health is wealth. It is the biggest asset we need every day to meet our goals. Previously, the definition of health was the proper functioning of our organ systems. As time passed, the definition has changed. Good health now includes the physical and mental wellbeing of a person. A person can be physically fit but mentally disturbed due to the circumstances he is facing. The same can happen when someone is suffering from physical illnesses but is mentally strong.

Maintaining proper health is the prime concern these days. This is a competitive era where you cannot stop. The moment you stop you will be replaced by a better option. This is why everyone is running in the rat race without thinking about their wellbeing. The compromise towards health becomes a costly affair later. In the cities, people are more affected by mental issues than physical ones. Constant stress and lack of physical activities contribute to the problem.

Proper health comprises many factors. It includes good food, proper routine, good sleeping habits, and eating habits. Apart from these personal traits, many external factors also control your wellbeing. People in the villages stay physically stronger due to freshness in the air, physical activities, and good food. People in the urban areas, on the contrary, prefer eating unhealthy food, lack physical agility, and cannot handle mental stress properly. In the same context, urban settlement has a better lifestyle and healthcare system. Considering all the components, a person needs to give equal importance to the factors and maintain a balance.

The elements of good health are physical and mental fitness. If both are maintained, a person will enjoy a better life. How can we achieve that state? First, we have to find out the factors influencing physical health. We have to learn about the lifestyle diseases that affect our health and check the ways to avoid or manage them. Secondly, we have to eat good food and maintain a healthy diet. We need to ensure a balanced diet and good food habits to provide nutrition to our systems. In this aspect, we also have to find out the harmful foods we generally prefer eating and avoid them. Regular exercise is the third most important part of good health. When we are physically active, our muscles remain functional. We get hurt very less and also recover faster. We can also maintain our body balance better when we are involved in physical activities.

The next phase is mental happiness. What makes us happy? One can be happy watching TV all the time. Sitting on the couch all day long can also make someone happy but is it a healthy choice? This type of lifestyle choice should be immediately avoided. Choosing a sedentary lifestyle is nothing but an invitation to different diseases. The current urban population is suffering from weight-related issues. Being overweight also makes the situation worse. Lifestyle diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol elevation, cardiovascular diseases, etc develop at a young age.

We also need to make better choices when it comes to mental health. Playing sports with your buddies will help you relax and de-stress. You can also take a walk in the park and enjoy the greenery. Avoid spending more time on the screen and try to develop a hobby that suits you. In this way, you can become happier and stay healthier.

A person also needs to choose better social factors to remain free from social stigmas. Cognitive health and social health are equally important. Adding more stress will not be the solution. Keep exercising physically and mentally to remain fit and enjoy good health and longer life. Make your home stress-free with good habits and keep everyone healthy.

Health is Wealth Essay in English

Health is the precious gift of God. We can say that health is wealth or even more important than that. It is one of the biggest priorities of human beings. Without a healthy body and mindset, nobody can focus on anything in their life. The major component of the human body to function properly is the healthy body. Once, ‘The Dalai Lama was asked a question from someone about what surprised him most about humanity, he replied, “A man!” He then explained that a man could sacrifice his entire life and health to earn money, then he again spends that money to regain his health, and between this, he loses his entire life and is unable to live the present or even his future. The moral is that a human being prioritizes making money over his mental or physical health. Sometimes, people work more than enough to complete 24 hours or seven days a week.

It is necessary to balance work and health to balance the happiness of life. We all know that health is one of God’s most precious gifts to us, and we have to take care more than anything in this world. Without a healthy life, we can never peacefully enjoy our life. It is said that to understand the mental stability of the human being, we have to check the body’s physical balance. The basic law is to remain healthy, and we have to maintain the food that we eat the exercises that we do to make our body fit and healthy. We can see that healthy man is more confident, energetic, and sociable than normal, less healthy people.

The World Health Organization declared on 7th April 1950 that World Health Day is celebrated on 7th April every year all over the world. A healthy life gives you more confidence in living. It helps in many things such as increases the efficiency of the heart and lungs, reduces the cholesterol level, increases muscle strength and stamina. It improves mental sharpness, boosts body energy and enhances sleep quality, makes your body healthy and fit, and enhances the body’s immunity power. To make our body healthy and fit, we have to do exercises, yoga, meditation and aerobics, and other body exercises that make your body fit. And to maintain it, we have to avoid eating unhealthy foods like junk foods, packet foods, oily meals.

In essence, our health is a reflection of the life we lead. It is a mirror that reflects our choices, habits, and attitudes. As we journey through life, it is essential to remember that health is not merely the absence of disease but a state of complete physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Expository essays provide a structured way to present information, ensuring that readers can grasp complex ideas through a logical and organized format. They essentially focus on explaining a particular subject.

This type of essay is most common in educational settings, where it serves as a tool to assess students’ understanding of a topic. It provides an opportunity for students to showcase their ability to communicate that understanding clearly.

For professionals, the ability to write clear and concise expository essays can enhance their communication and essay-writing skills that may be required for their job role. They can make it easier to convey technical information or explain processes in a straightforward manner.

According to a paper published in the Journal of Technology and Science Education regarding students’ thoughts about their essay-writing skills, 50% of students claimed to have a fair ability when composing essays. Hence, it is important to understand how to write a good essay if you want to enhance your ability past fair.

What Is an Expository Essay?

Expository essays explain a topic or concept using facts and evidence, hence the expository essay definition is not too complex to grasp. Unlike persuasive or argumentative essays, expository essays do not aim to convince the reader of a particular viewpoint. Instead, they provide a balanced and comprehensive explanation of the subject.

An expository essay is all about clarity and detail. Complex topics are broken down and hence become more accessible to the reader. Expository essays are used in academic settings to test students’ understanding of a subject and their ability to convey information clearly.

Now that you know what is an expository essay, we can look at the various forms these essays come in, each serving a unique purpose. Here are some of the more common types of expository essays:

  • Definition essays: A definition essay defines a specific term or concept. They go beyond dictionary definitions, providing a deeper understanding by exploring the term’s significance and context.
  • Classification essays: These essays categorize subjects into different groups or types. Each category is explained with its distinct characteristics and how it fits within the broader subject.
  • Process essays: Also known as “how-to” essays, provide step-by-step instructions on how to complete a particular task or process. A process essay is practical and straightforward and aims to guide the reader through a series of actions to achieve a specific outcome.
  • Compare-and-contrast essays : These types of essays take a deep dive into the similarities and differences between different subjects. A compare-and-contrast essay will help readers understand the subjects in relation to each other and highlight key points of comparison and contrast.
  • Cause and effect essays: When writing this kind of essay you thoroughly explore the connections between events or phenomena. They explain how one event leads to another and detail the causes and effects in a logical sequence.

By focusing on factual information and logical structure, expository essays enable writers to present a thorough analysis of their subject. This approach helps readers gain a clear and comprehensive understanding of the topic being discussed.

The Purpose of Expository Writing

While expository writing may be used to entertain or persuade a reader, it mainly serves to provide information. A well-crafted expository essay demonstrates the writer’s expertise on the topic and explains the subject in detail.

The main objective of expository writing is to convey information concisely. As previously discussed, expository essays can serve a valuable purpose for both academics and professionals. Here are some key purposes of expository writing:

  • Informing: Expository essays provide readers with essential information about a topic. This could include scientific processes or technical procedures. The goal is to enhance the reader’s knowledge and understanding of the subject.
  • Explaining: Expository writing breaks down complex ideas into simpler, more manageable components. By explaining how things work or why certain events occur, these essays make difficult concepts more accessible to the reader.
  • Clarifying: Sometimes, topics can be misunderstood or misrepresented. Expository essays aim to clarify such topics by presenting accurate facts and logical explanations. This helps dispel misconceptions and provides a clear, unbiased perspective.
  • Describing: Expository essays can also describe a particular process or phenomenon in detail. This includes outlining the steps involved and their significance.
  • Analyzing: Expository writing often involves analyzing information to uncover deeper insights. Such as examining data and exploring relationships between variables.

By focusing on these purposes, expository essays can help readers gain a thorough and accurate understanding of the topic at hand.

If you are describing a technical process, the goal is to provide a clear and comprehensive overview of the subject. In this case, you must also ensure your essay has a good writing flow . By the end of the essay, the reader’s knowledge and understanding of the subject should be significantly better.

6 Essential Steps to Follow When Writing an Expository Essay

A clear understanding of expository essay structure helps organize your writing, ensuring a logical flow from the introduction to the conclusion. These are the steps you should consider when compiling an expository essay.

Step 1: Choose an Appropriate Topic

Select a topic that is both interesting and manageable. Ensure it is specific enough to cover in detail but broad enough to provide ample information.

Step 2: Conduct Thorough Research

Gather reliable sources to support your essay. Use academic journals and books to find factual information. Take notes, organize your research, and reference them.

Step 3: Create an Expository Essay Outline

An outline will help you structure your essay logically. It typically includes three parts: an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Step 4: Write the Introduction

The introduction should grab the reader’s attention and provide background information on the topic. It should end with a clear thesis statement that outlines the main points of the essay.

Step 5: Develop Body Paragraphs

Each body paragraph should focus on a single point related to the thesis statement. Begin with a topic sentence, provide supporting evidence, and explain how it relates to the thesis. Use transition words to ensure a smooth flow between paragraphs.

Step 6: Write the Conclusion

The point of the conclusion is to offer a summary of the main points presented in the essay. A good conclusion should also provide a final thought or call to action for the reader.

To help you get a better idea of how to craft different parts for these types of essays, we have included some expository essay examples below.

How To Write an Introduction for an Expository Essay

Imagine you’re writing an expository essay on the impact of social media on mental health. Your introductory paragraph should look like this:

“Social media has become an integral part of modern life, influencing how we communicate, share information, and perceive the world. While having its benefits, such as connecting people and providing a platform for self-expression, it also has significant effects on mental health. This essay will explore all impacts of social media on mental health and examine how it affects self-esteem, anxiety, and depression.”

The above is a good expository essay example if you want to write an introduction to engage your readers.

How To Write a Body Paragraph for an Expository Essay

Each body paragraph when you write expository essays should provide a detailed examination of one aspect of the topic. For example, if your essay is about social media’s impact on mental health, you might have paragraphs on:

  • Self-esteem: Discuss how social media influences self-esteem, both positively and negatively.
  • Anxiety: Explore the connection between social media usage and anxiety levels.
  • Depression: Analyze how social media can contribute to depression and offer potential solutions.

For example:

“One of the most significant impacts of social media on mental health is its effect on self-esteem. Studies have shown that frequent use of social media platforms can lead to increased feelings of inadequacy and low self-worth. This is often due to the tendency to compare oneself to others, who may present an idealized version of their lives online. However, social media can also boost self-esteem by providing a platform for positive feedback and support from peers.”

How To Write a Conclusion for an Expository Essay

The conclusion should summarize the main points and leave the reader with a lasting impression.

Below is an example of how to write a conclusion for an expository essay that will engage the reader:

“In conclusion, social media has a profound impact on mental health, affecting self-esteem, anxiety, and even depression. While it provides opportunities for connection and self-expression, it also has some significant risks. By understanding these effects and promoting healthy social media habits, we can mitigate its negative impact and harness its benefits.”

Fact Check: No firearm recovered in Milwaukee officer-involved shooting near RNC

There is no evidence a July 16 officer-involved shooting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin was linked to the Republican National Convention (RNC) nearly a mile away, or to the July 13 assassination attempt targeting Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, as suggested in social media posts saying the incident involved a “potential shooter.”

A Searing Reminder That Trump Is Unwell

His bizarre diatribe at the RNC shows why the pro-democracy coalition is so worried about beating him.

Donald Trump’s bizarre diatribe at the Republican National Convention shows why the prodemocracy coalition is so worried about beating the GOP nominee—even if it means that Joe Biden must step down.

But first, here are three new stories from The Atlantic .

  • It’s official: The Supreme Court ignores its own precedent.
  • What the Microsoft outage reveals
  • “Hillbilly” women will get no help from J. D. Vance.

Not Comparable

It’s been quite a year in politics, what with President Biden facing calls to drop out of the race and Trump having a meltdown in public after an assassination attempt and …

I’m sorry, did I say a year ? I meant a week .

So much has happened, and political events have become so freakish, that we can all be forgiven for losing our bearings a bit. For the past few days, I’ve felt like Homer Simpson after he accidentally turned a toaster into a time machine and came back to find that Ned Flanders was the unchallenged dictator of the world.

But in the midst of all this, two things remain clear:

  • Joe Biden is showing significant signs of frailty and faces real opposition within his party to continuing his campaign.
  • Donald Trump is emotionally unwell.

These are not comparable problems.

Nor did Biden and Trump have equally bad weeks. Biden is facing a revolt in his own party and is now recovering from COVID. Trump was nearly killed by a young loner .

Biden claims to still be in the race, an answer many elected Democrats have refused to accept. My colleague Russell Berman wrote yesterday afternoon that Senator Peter Welch of Vermont believes that the Biden campaign may be at an end; more telling is that Russell described Welch as the only member of the upper chamber making that argument, but from the time that Russell wrote that article to this afternoon, three more sitting Democratic U.S. senators— Sherrod Brown of Ohio, Jon Tester of Montana, and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico—called for Biden to step down.

The case for Biden leaving the race is evident to anyone who’s watched him over the past month. He seems to be no better in his public outings than he was during the debate, and has sometimes seemed worse. As I’ve said here , I don’t think that means he can’t run the country for the remainder of his term, but Trump is going to be fired up and on the road, and I doubt that Biden can match that level of engagement, which could be decisive in a race that will be won on slim margins in a handful of states. I suspect that the people voting to save democracy would vote for Biden if he were governing from a cryostatic tube, but the Democrats calling on him to wrap it up have perfectly valid fears that he could lose and take the down-ballot races with him.

Meanwhile, the Republican National Convention was a searing reminder that Trump is a vengeful autocrat with obvious mental deficits who has surrounded himself with a crew of vicious goons.

I approached Trump’s speech with genuine curiosity. I was for most of my life a working political scientist, and I have written speeches for politicians; I think I know a good one when I see one. So I watched last night to see if Trump, tamed by a brush with death, would strike a new tone or, at the very least, try to make peace with one of his most hated enemies: the teleprompter.

No chance. To be fair, some people who watched the speech thought that the first 10 minutes or so, in which Trump recounted being injured, were good, even thoughtful. I thought they were terrible; although Trump and his people have emphasized Trump’s defiance in the moment after he was hurt, his blow-by-blow account of the incident came across to me as creepy and solipsistic rather than brave.

Contrast that with Ronald Reagan, the previous president injured in an attempt on his life. Karen Tumulty of The Washington Post reminded us today that Reagan appeared before Congress a month after he was nearly killed. (His injuries were severe and life-threatening.) Reagan was on the Hill to talk about the economy, but he started by thanking the country for its prayers and good wishes, noting a cute letter he got from a child while he was in the hospital, and paying tribute to the people injured alongside him. This digression took all of four paragraphs, a matter of a few minutes. “Now, let’s talk about getting spending and inflation under control and cutting your tax rates,” he then said. Trump, however, droned on about how much the human ear can bleed, while the screens behind him showed huge pictures of blood on his face. He then went over to the equipment owned by Corey Comperatore, the volunteer firefighter killed in the attack, and kissed the helmet. Some in the crowd may have loved it, but I prefer a bit more stoicism in national leaders; I’ve always thought that Trump’s penchant for hugging and kissing flags was weird, and planting a kiss on the headgear of a dead man was even weirder.

And then things really went off the rails. If you didn’t sit through it, I can’t blame you; it was the longest presidential-nomination-acceptance speech on record. Basking in the friendliest audience he will ever find on this planet, Trump couldn’t help himself. He was supposed to be like a band at a concert doing a tight set, playing some favorites for the loyal fans, introducing a little new material, and gaining a wider audience. Instead, he blew the chance and ran overtime as he noodled, improvised, and even mangled some of his classics.

The speech wasn’t written that way, of course, but Trump can’t stick to a script. You can always tell when Trump is trying to read the teleprompter: His shoulders tense up, he cocks his head and squints, and he rushes through words he has clearly never seen before. It doesn’t help that Trump’s writers stuff his speeches with baroque constructions that are supposed to be soaring and majestic but that always end up sounding more like dollar-store Churchill imitations. Trump struggles with these complex sentences, and then he abandons them—and that is when the real Trump comes out, in all his whiny and aggrieved glory.

I do not have the space (or the endurance) to relive those moments with you, but they were the ramblings of a man who has serious psychological problems . All of it was on display last night: rage, paranoia, pettiness, desolating selfishness.

I’m always sorry to leave readers with these sorts of observations just before a weekend, but much of the media response to Biden’s troubles and Trump’s madness has been mired in equivalences that obscure what’s happening to both men, and what’s at stake for the nation. (As I was writing this, for example, a Washington Post newsletter arrived in my inbox and told me that the GOP had just wrapped up “an energized, focused convention.” That’s an interesting description of a Republican gathering that featured a sex worker, Hulk Hogan, and a spaced-out Trump.)

Yes, Biden is old, and he’s having trouble communicating. The people expressing serious concerns about him have good reason to worry about both his health and his ability to defeat Trump. He might be out of the race by next week. But Trump is mentally and emotionally unwell. He and his valet, J. D. Vance, are not going anywhere. The real tragedy is that, in a serious country, Biden might step down without incident, and a normal race would continue, because decent people would have banished Trump from the public square long ago.

A collage of photos of John Fogerty, and the author of this piece performing as John Fogerty

How I Faked My Way to Rock Stardom

By J. R. Patterson

Before John Fogerty’s life became mine, there was cold. In November 2012, I was 22 and had left the family farm in Manitoba to find work in the oil fields of Alberta. I arrived during a bust and, because work was not immediate, spent the days driving my Ford F-150 around the country surrounding Calgary, listening to AM radio and my small collection of CDs—a few Rolling Stones albums, some outlaw-country records, and the complete discography of Creedence Clearwater Revival. The Ford was what they call a SuperCab, with a rear backward-opening half door and a narrow bench for a back seat. At night, lacking the money for a hotel, I would find a quiet place to park, crawl into the back seat, and stretch out on the bench, my clothes wrapped around my boots for a pillow. I kept my guitars—an acoustic Martin and an electric Epiphone Les Paul—beside me to warm them, lest they crack in the cold. The nights weren’t kind to me either, and I often woke up shivering, the world outside covered with frost or snow. To allay myself, I’d run the engine for a while and put on Creedence.

Some of you may have noticed that I don’t particularly admire Trump’s running mate, Senator J. D. Vance of Ohio. (Vance has noticed it too.) I wrote about his RNC speech here . I remain appalled at Vance’s casual betrayal of the people he claims to care about, the poor and working-class whites he grew up with in Ohio.

Perhaps I feel this more keenly because I grew up in a working-class town in Massachusetts, and I think working people deserve a better spokesperson than an opportunistic plutocrat like Vance. You may find it striking to think of New England as a depressed area; people who are not from the region probably think of it as a lovely expanse of college greens and church steeples and foliage. And it is—but much of New England was once home to mills and factories that produced shoes, textiles, and even military swords. (The bronze doors of the U.S. Capitol’s House wing were cast in 1903 in my hometown of Chicopee.) By the late 1970s, many of those workplaces, abandoned as industries moved out of the Northeast and sometimes out of the United States, were rotting hulks.

If you’d like to read a memoir that shows what it was like to grow up in Massachusetts in those days, I’d suggest Townie: A Memoir , by Andre Dubus III, who is near my age and grew up in a mill town much like mine. It’s not a pretty read, but it is evocative—so much so that some passages made me wince. I can affirm that it captures the reality of growing up in a part of America, far from Vance’s hometown, that was also plagued by dysfunction and decline.
