Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

"Allow App and Book Assignment?" notification never stops. How do I accept terms of service? No accept / Agree button?

Using the iPhone of various models After I install a program called Microsoft Intune Company Portal and I sign in to the program and it creates a management profile, A popup keeps showing up called.

assignment book for ipad

"Allow App and Book Assignment?"

"i.manage.microsoft.com" would like to assign apps and books to you.

When i press Continue It opens a 2 page Apple Media Terms and Service agreement (ToS).

But after you view 2 pages , there's no way to accept the agreement or continue.

There's an email option, but emailing the ToS does not allow one to proceed foward.

I can close out the ToS, but the i.manage.microsoft.com pop will appear all the time.

It's driving me crazy. I can't text, I cant surf , I can take a picture, read a text or use apps, without this popup coming up all the time. This happens with various Iphone models. Becuase I install the intune software for work employees.

I also brought this issue up with microsoft and this is the workaround they concluded:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bd0f27e7-9289-4364-8ea7-2cca74a3bd2b/imanagemicrosoftcom-pop-up-notification-wont-stop-popping-up-cant-agree-or-progress-past-2?forum=microsoftintuneprod&prof=required

++ What you have to do is install Intune and complete the install and registration on the iPhone.

Then you do the same on the iPad. (using the same user's credentials.)

++ On the Ipad though you will be able to press the "agree button" on the terms of service

++ Once you do that on the Ipad, the settings are transferred to the Iphone through Intune

++ And your phone should not have any more pop ups, because it did it on the Ipad.

++ Lastly remove the Ipad from the user's phone in the Intune --> devices.

*Note: i haven't tried doing this on another Iphone that already works*

Microsoft says this is due to the latest IOS versions affecting intune on Iphones. Who knows who's at fault, this is a workaround and hopefully will be fixed so we dont have to rely on an Ipad.

We have this issue too, and it is definitely related to MS intune, rather than the iOS device itself. Some things we noticed about our setup:

  • Enrolment Profiles - corrupt enrolment file due to a field with too many characters, this wasn't allowing us to update and hide the available options on setup. We believe the T&Cs issue is related to this.
  • iOS 12.2 and below are not impacted by this issue. 12.2.1 and above are impacted.
  • Newly enrolled DEP devices do not see this issue, but factory reset DEP devices do if they're above 12.2.
  • We currently use the legacy VPP, and have not migrated to the new app distro platform, this we are investigating.

We've a ticket open with MS premium support, but since fixing our enrolment profile, it seems to have gone away. Time will tell.

Jun 8, 2019 4:33 AM in response to MF_Hawk

We have exactly the same issue. I opened an Apple case to get this resolved. It is identified as an Apple issue, but they are still investigating. Feel free to log an issue a make a reference to case Number: 100804349457.

Jul 24, 2019 4:40 AM in response to MF_Hawk

I am also experiencing this issue over multiple user devices (iPhone and iPad) with guided access install and Intune Company Portal. Due to the frequency of the nag message the end user devices are essentially useless currently. In the middle of a 50 iPad deployment and this bug has essentially paused the programme.

Aug 6, 2019 6:19 AM in response to MF_Hawk

Still having this issue with some of my users and it is now Aug. 6. Apple enterprise Group stated that this is an ongoing issue and that they are investigating. As for the iPad work around we only have iPhones so that will not work for us.

Aug 6, 2019 10:44 AM in response to Caretsarbtiern

Apparently the question pop up appears when the user has installed one of the apps via their own Apple ID/account. When the user removes all of these apps and reinstall them using Intune the pop up should not reappear.

Still need to to find the time to do this on my iPhone. When it’s successful I will let you know, when you try it let me (us) know if this resolves the issue.

This issue is also occurring on some our managed devices. Trying to narrow it down to determine if it is related to iOS version.

The devices that are experiencing the issue are running iOS 12.3 and below, whereas 12.4 is available.

Cannot comment on whether it is really related to user owned apps, given that I personally erased an iPhone via Erase All Content and Settings > Setup as New > MFA + Comp Portal + Outlook were the only items assigned. Pop-up to "Allow App and Book Assignment" still occurred.

Aug 16, 2019 3:59 PM in response to AppleMauricio

Looks like it is not iOS version specific as someone running iOS 12.4 is also experiencing the issue.

Someone within our org attempted to download Yelp from the Comp Portal, which then triggered the pop ups.

Aug 27, 2019 4:55 PM in response to MF_Hawk

I've found that this was due to a single app that had a 'User License' applied through InTune rather than a 'Device License'.

We don't apply any iTunes accounts to our users so we ONLY apply device based licenses.

This one was applied by accident, once converted to a device license the prompt was no longer showing after enrollment.

To dismiss the “Allow App and Book Assignment?” pop-up

on your iPhone, please follow the below steps.

Click on the Settings app on the Home

Select your

Apple ID account

Here is the instructions from the IT department at my work. It seems to work.

Click iTunes

& App Store

Slide the toggle on for

both Apps and Books & Audiobooks

You have now allowed automatic downloads of apps form Intune

Comp Portal and should no longer receive the pop-up.

Sep 12, 2019 6:01 PM in response to brianx22

Ok. The accept apps and books in settings didn’t work. My IT guy at work had to reset my intune. So from the company site they disconnected my intune account and then rejoined me. I had to go through the setup steps again for allowing management of my profile by my companies intune. The IT group requested DO NOT TRY to download apps from intune. Once you try it will perpetually send you the agreement with no way to accept it. Supposedly if you do it from an iPad it will work. But it’s broken on the iPhone.

Sep 14, 2019 11:15 PM in response to bjrch

Unfortunately Apple came back to me (after 4 months!!!) with the conclusion it is not an Apple issue, but an InTune issue. Personally I doubt it in an InTune issue, as the issue is that the Apple media terms are displayed in the App Store application of Apple.

Did anybody logged the the issue with Microsoft and what is their response?

mnejmantowicz

Sep 16, 2019 8:36 AM in response to bjrch

It looks like a formatting issue. If you have a larger form factor device, such as an iPad, the accept button is available. Once you accept the EULA, then all your other devices will work without issue. It's a one time setting if your company deploys VPP apps with a "user license" vs "device license" setting.

Microsoft is saying its an Apple issue yet all the iOS betas have NOT fixed this. Here is what MS says: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Intune-Customer-Success/Known-Issue-iOS-12-2-Terms-and-Conditions/bc-p/785167

Sep 19, 2019 1:35 PM in response to mnejmantowicz

installed iOS 13 in the hope it would resolve the issue. To be honest there is a step forward as they put a bar with cancel and agree at the bottom. Unfortunately pressings accept shows a pop-up to cancel or accept and after pressing accept ...... nothing happens 😟

I cannot believe it is so difficult 😓

Sep 20, 2019 6:10 AM in response to bjrch

Same Here bjrch. I upgraded this morning and there is an 'accept' button but it has no effect. My VPP licensed apps never install and the prompt to accept pops up over and over again on the device making it unusable. This is so frustrating as I'm not able to move forward on my company project and deploy phones because of this.

Description.

Assignment Notebook has been totally revamped and redesigned to provide students with a premium experience tracking assignments, test, and quizzes for an affordable price… free! Assignment Notebook offers remote storage for across device syncing for a low price as well, though these features are not required in order to utilize Assignment Notebook’s powerful features. Gone is the old design of a “notebook” style user interface, in favor of a more powerful, more organized interface that makes keeping track of assignments more straight forward, and more fun. We have also added several new features around assignment/class tracking. To help make the user experience even better, we have added several new features such as a dark mode theme and haptic feedback on events. [Summary] The “Summary” tab is the tab where you will be shown a crucial summary of your class schedule and due assignments, all in one place. You are also able to prioritize your assignments by simply dragging them in the order that you prefer. This screen will show you exactly what you need to see as quickly as possible, so you can get back to what you need to do. [To Do] The “To Do” tab will give you the full list of all incomplete assignments, as well as quizzes and tests that are upcoming. You can edit these listed items directly from this tab, or add new ones from the “Add” tab. If you tap on an assignment, test, or quiz, you will be taken to the detail screen that gives you all relevant details regarding this item. Details such as when the item is due, when it was assigned, or any relevant notes or class details you may have provided when creating the assignment. [Add] The way you add classes and assignments has changed for the better. You are now able to track classes that have different times on different days. You are also able to more quickly specify the remaining class details. Adding assignments has slightly changed as well, now you are able to see more relevant class details for the classes you are currently taking. This provides you with much better insight as to what class you are actually adding the assignment to. [Schedule] The “Schedule” tab will give you your class schedule in an easy to understand view. It allows you to jump directly to specific days by just tapping on the calendar icon and choosing the day that you wish to view. When you find the class you wish to view, you can just tap on it to view the assignments, tests, and quizzes that are upcoming for that class. If you wish to edit that class instead, just hold down on the class for a few seconds and you will be able to edit these class details or remove it from your calendar. How to Use the iPad for Study and Deep Learning

assignment book for ipad

I’ve been going to school for a long time.

Looking back, this story is one of those “walked to school in 4 feet of snow, uphill, both ways” sort of stories.

The post-secondary landscape in 2009 was very, very different than it is today. The iPhone had just been introduced and wasn’t available in Canada. The iPad didn’t exist. Blackberries were the rage.

For school, digital textbooks didn’t exist. I vividly remember heading into the university two days before the semester started to purchase textbooks. Normally, you’d opt for used textbooks, both for the prior owner’s highlights and to save money. But of course, most professors insisted on you purchasing the latest edition (likely because they had a hand in authoring the textbook).

(Eventually, textbook publishers and authors gained some wisdom and started including a digital code in the back of new textbooks that was required for the “full” textbook edition. Once that code was redeemed, the used textbook was largely useless.)

Those textbooks cost thousands of dollars each year. Tuition, usually, was the smaller chunk to pay.

And you had to carry those textbooks with you everywhere you went. I didn’t need a fitness regiment in 2009 — I just needed to fill my backpack with my textbooks for the walk to school.

assignment book for ipad

In the 11 years since, everything has changed. I haven’t walked the streets of a university in a few years, but all my courses over the last five years have been offered digitally, with digital textbooks and online delivery of lectures and webinars. Learners now write exams on a computer. Google is an acceptable form of finding sources for research (though of course the source still needs to be reputable; there was a time when I was not allowed to use Google to find external sources for any research). Access to professors and facilitators has moved to a digital format — most respond to emails within 24 hours and no longer require booking a meeting to meet with them in their messy offices, and most are accessible by video calls these days.

In hindsight, the hoops we jumped through seem hysterical, but they only seem hysterical because of how easy everything is today.

In hindsight, the iPad has undergone the most evolution and has been the most consequential tool of my post-secondary career. From the start when the iPad was a myth to a finish line where the iPad can facilitate every aspect of the educational cycle, the past 11 years have seen technological evolution at a backbreaking pace.

With this hindsight in mind, I want to reflect and provide some guidance on how I transitioned my entire post-secondary schooling to the iPad. It’s this experience that has led me to believe the iPad is the world’s greatest learning tool. Ever. In the history of humanity. The iPad is humankind’s greatest educational achievement.

Why the iPad is the Best Educational Tool

This is a very straightforward answer:

The iPad is the best educational tool because of its ability to adapt to any input method.

The iPad provides the same ability to read, write, and compute like a MacBook Air or a Windows PC, but the iPad’s secret weapon is the Apple Pencil. Handwriting is still the most optimal input method for learning and comprehending material for the long-term.

The Pen(cil) is mightier than the sword.

assignment book for ipad

Modern iPads have a desktop-class browser, enabling the iPad to provide access to video seminars and other modern delivery methods. Modern iPads have great apps, like iBooks, or Notability, or PDF Expert to process educational problems.

Lastly, the iPad Magic Keyboard (or Smart Keyboard, if you don’t need the trackpad) is also a worthy tool for any iPad-toting student. In an instant, you can flip from handwriting-ready iPad mode to typing and cursor iPad mode, diminishing the hiccup times between input methods. And thanks to the iPad’s incredible battery life, you can flip between modes all day long. When you’re in the learning zone, the last thing you need is a disconnect when transitioning from typing to handwriting.

I expect future iPads to only double-down on this core strength — future iPads are likely to support external displays in new and improved ways, the Apple Pencil is likely to become even more responsive and adaptive, and iPadOS software is likely to continue evolving to meet the needs of modern tablet users.

Thanks to hindsight, it’s clear the iPad is a tool worthy of investment and is sure to meet most student needs for their post-secondary careers.

The Five Steps of My Learning

Over time, I’ve taken between 60 and 70 courses and written about 60 to 70 exams. In that time, I’ve noticed five specific “modules” or “stages” I find myself working though from start to finish:

Intake and Research

Synthesis and connection, response formulation, examination study, long-term knowledge preservation.

You can likely visualize the stages in much the same way as a course calendar.

First, you read your textbook, attend lectures or webinars, and discuss new technical material with other students.

Second, you take your findings and new technical material and process everything with the most powerful computer in the world: your brain. This step entails finding new connections in the material and improving your breadth and depth of the subject matter.

Third, you generally have to submit assignments throughout a course, requiring you to showcase your Stage 2 connections in the form of a written response or quiz. Transitioning from synthesis and connection to written response is a critical step in the learning process.

Fourth, you generally have to study for a single examination at the end of a course. This examination usually tests all of the subject matter within the course and requires a broader array of general study and intense practice of concepts and technical material.

Fifth, it’s imperative to ensure long-term comprehension of what you’ve learned through the course. It’s very easy to cram for an exam, brain dump when under exam pressure, and forget everything you studied in the week after the exam. But in order to ensure you’ve learned the skills offered within the course, you must ensure you store the knowledge in some way for long-term use.

All the requirements for each of these stages can be met with an iPad, an external keyboard, an Apple Pencil, and the appropriate app choices. Some people will like specific apps more than others, and other people will have a tighter or looser budget to enable more app choices. Though there is no definitive “best” choice for any of these stages, there are apps that work better than others, and I’ll attempt to highlight them accordingly.

With the right tool choices, you can efficiently absorb the material, connect your thoughts, write and submit responses, study using the most effective methods, and store your learning for the long run.

Let’s dive in.

The Sweet Setup Staff Picks for 2022

We spend an inordinate amount of time sorting through hundreds of apps to find the very best. Our team here at The Sweet Setup put together a short list of our must-have, most-used apps in 2022.

Educational delivery today may be comprised of entirely different elements than what I’ve experienced over my 11 years, but there have been three major ways to discover and learn new material that I’ve come across:

  • Lectures and webinars
  • Textbooks and technical material
  • Prior learning

Lectures and Webinars

Lectures consist of the standard in-person sitting where you listen to an accomplished professor or facilitator discuss a topic. Webinars are, in my experience, the exact same thing as a lecture, just delivered in a remote format.

Lectures and webinars can be absorbed in a number of different ways, and each person will find methods that work best for them. No matter your preferences, the iPad and the App Store have tools to help you learn.

For lectures and webinars, I prefer to type my notes. Most people can type faster than they can hand write, allowing you to move back and forth between note-taking to listening as fast as possible. After all, the best facilitators provide commentary that supplements your textbooks, so it’s essential to listen to their commentary.

I have found great success in using either Craft Notes, Notion, or Roam Research for this type of intake. Any note-taking app that works in Split View alongside your textbooks or technical material will do, but Craft, Notion, or Roam Research provide extra features for synthesis, study, and long-term preservation that note-taking apps like Drafts or Ulysses are unable to provide.

My iPad generally looks something like this when attending an in-person lecture or webinar:

assignment book for ipad

Having your typed notes available quickly alongside technical material that can supplement the professor or facilitator’s commentary will greatly improve your initial comprehension when discovering new topics and material.

And thanks to the iPad’s desktop-class Safari, you can now properly watch a webinar on the iPad while taking notes in either Split View or Slide Over.

For those students who find research to be a fundamental core to learning or for formulating responses, I recommend Roam Research. Roam’s connective-thinking features are far superior to apps like Notion and Craft at this point and are likely to unearth new connections later on in the synthesis and research phase of learning. Arts degrees (my first degree was an Arts degree with a major in History) are likely to greatly benefit from an app like Roam Research. My accountancy studies (a bit more technical in nature and less reliant on connective thinking) have tended more towards block-based apps like Notion or Craft.

assignment book for ipad

Of course, you can also take handwritten notes and capture audio snippets of the lecture, if you prefer. For this, I recommend Notability. Although our favorite app for taking handwritten notes on the iPad is GoodNotes, Notability combines a great canvas for handwriting with a handy audio capture functionality to link audio snippets to your handwritten notes. Combine this with PDF Expert or Files.app in Split View and you can capture all sorts of notes at the same time.

Textbooks and Technical Material

My textbooks have been PDF-specific for five years now, so I can only speak in this regard. If at all possible, I recommend attaining a digital copy of your technical materials and textbooks — this will save an immense amount of scanning time and, most importantly, will provide the ability to search your technical materials from a simple search field.

assignment book for ipad

Regarding PDFs, I have found no better app than PDF Expert on iPad. PDF Expert is free on the iPad if you make minor edits (like underlines, handwritten annotations, and highlights) and you can pay an annual subscription fee if you need to edit PDFs further than that. In my experience, I’ve never once felt a need for something more than PDF Expert’s free tier.

For me, the two fundamental features required for any PDF app for iPad are Apple Pencil support and the ability to highlight text. The faster I can highlight text with the Pencil, the better the app. PDF Expert is the king at underlining and highlighting text, and the app’s Apple Pencil support allows for quick highlighting of entire paragraphs if needed.

You could also consider Highlights , a PDF app for iPad that showcases all your highlights in a view beside the actual PDF. My issue with Highlights is the speed at which you can highlight text — there are a few extra steps and confirmations before you can highlight text. This hiccup puts PDF Expert at the top of the list for me.

Prior Learning

In your early study days, “prior learning” may be limited or even non-existent. Rest assured, an appropriate workflow right from the start will ensure you have any and all of your prior learning and work ready and available at a moment’s notice.

After 10 years of doing this, I return to old work a lot . Having quick access to those old assignments, old notes, and old studies has been fundamental to cutting down time on current notes, assignments, and studies.

Having your prior learning in a searchable format is fundamental to quick access. Relatively recent iOS improvements like the Files app will enable reasonably fast access to past learning that can be searched right within iPadOS’s Universal Search bar. A quick search for the file name or file folder can quickly open you up to that particular spot in Files, at which point you can dive into a PDF app or other note-taking app from there.

Better yet, if you start your studying workflow with an iPad and specific apps, you can turbocharge your searching. If you house your notes in Roam Research , a quick search query for any term within any note in the search bar will surface results from anywhere in your database. Searching inside Craft is, in my experience, a little less reliable than searching inside Roam Research, but search results are generally useful after an alteration to my search query. Unless you’re under a time limit, searching is extra powerful if you keep all your learning in one spot.

Intake and Research — A Summary

An oft-cited quote that never goes wrong:

Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.

Intake of technical material and commentary from professors and facilitators is the first step along a long and winding educational process. Ensuring you take your materials in consistent, searchable, efficient, and effective structures will be key to efficiently working through the rest of the workflow.

The iPad is capable of capturing, storing, and unearthing all sorts of media and data. Using the right apps, you can capture audio commentary from a professor while taking handwritten notes and while having the technical textbook available on screen. Only the iPad can do this and maintain the ultimate level of portability to keep your backpack at bay.

I personally think the “Intake and Research” step is the most fundamental to this entire studying workflow. As long as you have your notes and material in the right spots, you can put them to good use later on.

After you’ve attended a lecture or have worked through your textbook readings, it’s time to start making connections, synthesizing information, and coming to a comprehensive level of learning. This is best done by decreasing the amount of time it takes to unearth connective information and to increase the amounts of information you can connect.

Put another way, you can alleviate a lot of this synthesizing and connective thought by putting lots of the grunt work onto the software and allowing your brain to do the really hard work.

Connective Thinking and Note-Taking

Connective thinking, to me, is a deeper, more comprehensive level of knowledge. Technical knowledge of a topic would suggest you know that the sun will rise in the morning, or that A-squared plus B-squared equals C-squared. Comprehensive knowledge is knowing how sunshine impacts life on planet earth, or how right triangles can form strong structures when used in tandem.

Comprehensive knowledge should be the goal in all your learning, and understanding deep connections between topics is the key to comprehensive learning.

There has been a recent phenomenon in connective note-taking apps. The rise (rebirth?) of backlinks has been tremendously powerful for connective thinking and deep learning, allowing you to use the power of a computer to offload connection-finding from your brain. Roam Research is the major app that comes to mind when it comes to connective note-taking and backlinks, but backlinks are available in a variety of apps on the iPad these days.

assignment book for ipad

Apps like NotePlan 3, Craft, Notion, Drafts, and others provide back-linking capabilities to ease the ability to jump from connected topic to connected topic and allow your brain to reach new levels of thinking.

assignment book for ipad

This synthesis and connection building step is fundamental to the learning process and is a key factor as to why I suggested any of the apps above to house your notes and learning right from the start. If you start taking your notes in an app like Roam Research, Craft, or NotePlan, you can harness the power of multiple input types (like drawings, or PDFs, or screenshots, or typed text) and have connective thinking features for further down the learning workflow.

assignment book for ipad

There are visual and mapping apps to help synthesize learning as well. I’ve grown to enjoy Muse , an app built on cards that can be moved around, manipulated, and written on with the Apple Pencil. Once you’ve completed your mind map in Muse, you can export the entire canvas as a PDF that can be inserted inside your knowledge repository like Roam Research, Notion, or Craft.

Synthesis and Connection — A Summary

Despite all the powerful computers in the world, the one inside your head is still the most powerful. Unfortunately, the computer inside your head only has so much capacity and bandwidth before it needs to rest. To most efficiently use that brain of yours, it seems natural to offload other, less processor-intensive tasks to other computers.

All the apps mentioned above, like Roam Research, Craft, Notion, NotePlan 3, Drafts, and Muse provide an avenue for you to offload elements of the connective thinking and comprehensive learning step. The more these apps can do, the more you can exercise your noggin and find the deepest connections between the topics you’re studying.

To prove your profound and new way of thinking and learning, professors and facilitators provide assignments to test your knowledge. The process of formulating a response to a question and the subsequent receipt of feedback afterwards are the most important part of any learning career. You can read Wikipedia or listen to podcasts all you want — the deepest forms of learning coincide with responding to an assignment, receiving and processing feedback, and teaching others the topic at hand.

Fortunately, the iPad can handle every one of these tasks as well.

Microsoft Office

For at least my entire post-secondary life, the community of Mac and iPad lovers have loved to hate on Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. There’s been some reason for this — Microsoft apps haven’t always played well with Apple hardware and Word and Excel have long carried significant bloat from yesteryear. (I myself lost an entire week’s worth of work when using Microsoft Word on the iPad a few years ago. There’s nothing quite like hammering out a week’s worth of work in three hours to meet a deadline.)

assignment book for ipad

But those days are generally behind us, and Microsoft Word and Excel on the iPad are worthy apps with a healthy following.

In general, the post-secondary world still lives inside that old enterprise software environment. Written responses are always due in Word format, while quantitative analysis inside spreadsheets are always due in an Excel format.

assignment book for ipad

You can choose to fight the Microsoft Office reality, or you can choose to get along with it. Given the amount of stress you’ll find yourself under with actual studying, I recommend giving in, using Microsoft Word and Excel for the iPad, and dealing with the inevitable hiccups along the way. In my experience, there are more hiccups trying to bend other apps to the will of the Word or Excel format than it is to just use Word and Excel in the first place.

assignment book for ipad

Upon completion of your response but before submission of your response for feedback, I recommend exporting your assignment into a PDF format or other accessible format for inclusion in your general note-taking app of choice. Assignments and responses are not end-game pieces — they need to be included in your learning and knowledge system so you can build on what you’ve learned in the future. Exporting as a PDF and importing the document into your knowledge system housed in Roam, Notion, or Craft will enable you to search old assignments in a flash.

Split View, Multi-Window, and Multitasking on iPad

Split View on the iPad marked a major, major step forward in the ability to use the iPad for study and responding. You’ve long been able to use a hardware keyboard and CMD + Tab to jump between apps, but the ability to have two apps on-screen at once quickly eliminated that extra screen-flipping distraction.

assignment book for ipad

For experienced iPad users, Split View will be baked into the workflow. But for new students who have little experience with the iPad, Split View should become one of the first iPadOS features you acquaint yourself with. Dragging an app out of Universal Search/Spotlight (or out of the dock) to the right or left edge of the display will quickly open your studied technical material alongside your response in Microsoft Word.

assignment book for ipad

Multi-Window features in iPadOS 13 and beyond have eliminated any impediments to the Split View workflow that I’ve run into. Long ago, I kept my typed notes from each lecture in a Word document. Pre-Multi-Window days, my typed notes in Word couldn’t be displayed alongside a second Word document for an assignment response.

Those days are over as well — you can work on two Word documents, side-by-side, on the iPad.

Using the Files App to Save and Upload Assignments

Another advent of the modern iPadOS operating system is the combination of the Files app and the desktop-class Safari browser.

assignment book for ipad

Files behaves much like Finder or Windows Explorer on a PC — you can save your documents, images, videos, and other media in a folder-based structure right on your iPad, or you can save them to a cloud service like iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or Microsoft OneDrive and use the Files app to access your cloud storage structure. Files is very much an iOS-specific version of Finder.

There was a point not long ago where you could not submit assignments from the iPad to the educational institution’s online submission portal. Very often, I’d find myself completing all my work on an iPad only to require someone else’s Mac to upload the final response for feedback.

This is, once again, a thing of the past — using Files to save and subsequently upload files through the improved Safari browser on iPad works much like any Finder-to-Safari workflow on the Mac.

Hardware Keyboards and Accessories

I simply don’t recommend writing 10-page responses on the iPad’s software keyboard with your neck cranked in the least ergonomic position possible. I’ve tried and it utterly sucks.

assignment book for ipad

There are a few great accessories that I have to recommend to any iPad-toting student. I mentioned a few earlier, but here they are again:

  • iPad Air/iPad Pro — For all your computing and processing. Don’t worry too much about storage capacity (32GB, 128GB, 256GB, etc.) — digital textbooks don’t eat up too much storage space.
  • Apple Pencil — For handwriting and drawing diagrams.
  • iPad Magic Keyboard — For typing and using the iPad’s next generation cursor support (though any external keyboard or mouse would do).
  • A USB-C display — For improving ergonomics and putting the iPad display up in front of you rather than down in front of you.
  • A USB-C hub — For connecting USB-A thumb drives, Ethernet connections, and perhaps the odd USB-A-to-Optical drive adapter.

The iPad is a fantastic writing device thanks to its focused one-or-two-apps-at-a-time user experience, but a hardware keyboard will greatly improve how quickly and efficiently you can write your notes and responses.

Response Formulation — A Summary

I think it’s important to understand that completing assignments and writing exams are not the final step of the journey towards comprehensive learning. It’s not like you need to house all sorts of knowledge to complete an assignment or exam and you can immediately discard that knowledge after you’re done — you need to retain what you’ve learned and connect it to deeper topics to further your learning.

Microsoft Word and Excel are not the end-game apps in this post-secondary workflow. They are tools to help you build your responses for submission. They are tools for exporting your work into a format you can process inside your knowledge management system in Roam, Notion, or Craft. You don’t need to live in them long, but you will need to live in them for at least a little while.

Formulating a response for an assignment is put into place for a reason — responding to a question forces you to learn the technical material, to make connections, and to deepen your comprehensive learning. So where Intake and Research involved putting knowledge into your brain, Synthesis and Connection and Response Formulation build connections and practice retrieval of that information.

It’s this “information retrieval” that is so vital to exam preparation and exam writing. The more information you can retrieve from your brain under pressure, the more likely you are to succeed in an exam setting.

So long story short, use your assignments wisely — they are designed to provide practice opportunities for information retrieval, not as a way to fill time, and make sure a course lasts the entirety of a semester.

If we took the complete time and effort exerted by a student throughout a course, I’d be willing to wager an average of 75% of that effort would be dedicated to exam studying. Preparing for an exam seems to be the topic for students (any quick YouTube search will prove my point; and is also likely due to the weight put onto examinations these days).

Yet it doesn’t need to be.

With proper learning structures, knowledge management systems, and effective efforts exerted leading up to the exam, exam preparation itself doesn’t need to be a coffee-overloaded binge the night before.

Further, this type of last-minute cram studying doesn’t set you up properly for the timeframe after the exam — the time where you need to take your learned skills and use them in the market to earn a living.

Exam preparation is an important step, to be sure — it entrenches connections learned throughout the course and helps fill gaps where you have weaknesses. If done properly, it also transitions you nicely into the long-term, continuous learning stage.

It doesn’t need to be stressful or crammed.

An Introduction to Active Retrieval

One of my favorite videos on the concept of “Active Retrieval” is from Ali Abdaal. In his video “How to Study for Exams” , he discusses how highlighting, summarizing, making notes, and re-reading technical material is far less effective for exam preparation than “Active Retrieval” (or Active Recall).

“Active Retrieval” is defined as:

the method of looking at some information and then testing yourself (either through free-recall or guided recall) to see how much you can remember.

In short, the key to succeeding in an exam setting while under time constraints and under pressure is to practice your ability to retrieve information from your brain. Or as Ali puts it, exams are about taking information out of your brain , not about putting information into your brain.

Watch Ali’s video to understand the evidence behind the effectiveness of Active Retrieval. The results are stunning and point immediately to ensuring our study efforts are focused on information retrieval and not information consumption.

How to Practice Rather than Study

At this point in the learning cycle, you’ve likely taken notes from lectures, highlighted text in your textbooks, saved audio snippets from lectures or YouTube videos, written responses for assignments, and scanned in the feedback you’ve received from your facilitators. You’ve consumed, processed, responded, and consumed some more.

Now it’s time to practice getting that information out of your head.

There are numerous pieces of software available on the iPad to help you practice, if your course material doesn’t provide avenues already. Any method that forces you to recall information will work, but the App Store always has superior ways to handle a task.

assignment book for ipad

Flashcards: Flashcards are a tried and true way for all forms of information retrieval. On the App Store, you can use apps like AnkiApp Flashcards to build out decks of materials to consistently quiz yourself throughout the semester. AnkiApp tracks your performance and algorithmically provides the topics you need to work on. You can add a variety of information to your decks, including formatted and stylized text (in HTML and CSS!) and even photos from your iPhone.

Retake quizzes and utilize all practice exams: If you have access to practice assignments or practice quizzes and exams, utilize these opportunities as fully as possible. Put your iPad into Do Not Disturb mode, put the practice assignment and your Word or Excel sheet into Split View, and work through the problems without jumping into your notes and technical material. If required, ask a friend or family member to put a Screen Time app limit on the apps that house all your technical material so you can only focus on the practice exam or practice quiz. When you’re done, take the feedback provided on your practice effort, put it into your knowledge management system, and continue the process.

assignment book for ipad

Make notes with the book closed: This is perhaps my preferred method, specifically thanks to block-based apps like Craft, Notion, and Roam Research. In Craft, you can add a drawing block below the material and bring up iPadOS 14’s default Apple Pencil input view. This eliminates all distractions, puts the technical material in a place you can’t view it, and provides an endless scroll of paper on which to write. Once you’re done summarizing the notes with the Apple Pencil in the drawing block, you can save the block and quickly compare your written notes to the technical material block above it. Plus, Craft ensures the handwritten block is formatted beautifully alongside the rest of your typed blocks, ensuring your notes never look haphazard or cluttered.

Exam Preparation — A Summary

It’s fascinating to learn how many people prepare for exams the wrong way, by re-reading, re-highlighting, and re-summarizing the same topic they’ve already consumed once or twice before.

There’s nothing to say that re-reading and highlighting your textbook materials isn’t a good practice. I tend to view them as necessary consumption techniques that provide “triggers” in your brain. When it comes time to recall information, there often needs to be a trigger somewhere in your brain to help you find where you’ve compartmentalized the information. Some people are color-coded people, for instance, and so yellow highlighted text may act as a trigger for a specific topic, while blue highlighted text may act as a different kind of trigger. There’s a certain amount of subjective “you-know-yourself” at play here, all of which shouldn’t disregard the practice of re-reading and highlighting.

But when it comes time to actually prepare for an examination , it becomes time to learn and practice how to recall information .

Consuming information is Step 1. Synthesizing and processing information is Step 2. Recalling information is Step 3.

And of course, once you’ve mastered the material and fully recall any and all information at the drop of a hat, it’s time to ensure you have strong long-term knowledge practices in place to ensure your continued learning.

The fifth and final step — or perhaps the fifth and final circular bubble in the continuous cycle of learning — is the preservation and access to your knowledge base for the long-term. Once you’ve gone through all the work of first consuming, then processing, and then proving your knowledge in an examination, you need to ensure you have what you’ve learned close at hand should you need it.

I find myself accessing old notes and assignments at least a few times each week right now. I’ve quickly noticed how much more useful my old notes and assignments are if I can:

  • Find the pertinent information quickly;
  • Translate or apply my previous understanding of the concept to the current task at hand; and
  • Update my old notes with new information, new standards, or new lessons so I can have the best information available to my future self when I search for the content again.

Finding information quickly will boost your productivity, as you can cut out minutes or hours of extra research work by knowing where to look, what to search for, and have your entire knowledge base at your disposal.

Updating your old notes is fundamental to ensuring the continued learning cycle and to show yourself your long-term growth in the future. I generally get a good giggle at how I thought about things 9 or 10 years ago, but sometimes it’s important to know where you’ve been to better understand where you’re going.

With those two or three major criteria in place, you’ll quickly understand why I prefer Craft these days for consuming, processing, formulating, studying, and, ultimately, preserving knowledge.

Using Craft to Preserve Long-Term Knowledge

assignment book for ipad

I’ve already written here on The Sweet Setup on why I’ve settled on Craft as my app of choice for preserving knowledge. Though there are other apps (Roam Research, in particular) that would likely provide superior and more efficient means at finding information, Craft provides a few other features that make it my app of choice.

assignment book for ipad

First, as of the time of writing, Craft’s harnessing of the Apple Pencil as a strong input tool catapult it to the top of my list. I try to handwrite as much as possible — I tend to remember things I’ve written down at least twice as much as if I’ve typed them. Craft’s block-based format and drawing blocks are ideal for this study method.

assignment book for ipad

Second, though most apps that can highlight text, find connections, etc. also offer great exporting options, Craft’s exporting options are very flexible and provide some added foundation for the long run. First, Craft can export to PDF, Markdown, TextBundle, or Word, the last of which is helpful given the enterprise world’s reliance on Microsoft products. Second, Craft maintains links to external media you’ve inserted in a document. So if you have PDFs saved to your Craft document, the exported PDF of that Craft document will maintain a link to that inserted PDF, ensuring you don’t lose any of your data along the way.

Third, Craft has unique collaborative and sharing features that allow those who don’t even have a Craft account to view and comment on your material inside the app. Once you’ve completed your exams and entered your career, the value others provide to your career becomes immeasurable. Having the ability for others to add to and comment on your knowledge base help put Craft above its competitors in this category.

assignment book for ipad

Fourth, Craft is a native iPhone, iPad, and Mac app, ensuring it takes best advantage of the hardware features of each device. There are new features coming to web apps that take advantage of the iPhone and iPad each day, but Craft being native provides a leg up on competitors in this regard.

These are the main reasons why I have chosen Craft as the app I use for study and preserving knowledge. Craft is a pretty new app and I can’t pretend I’ve been using the app all this time — I’ve opted to move as much of my past studies as possible into the app, and it’s the app I spend most of my time in now that I’m in the last stages of study for a major examination.

Other Apps to Consider

Undoubtedly though, there are other ways to use your iPad and preserve long-term knowledge. I’ve discussed Roam Research and Notion frequently already, though I don’t think Roam’s exporting options (should you need them) are particularly strong.

Other options could include:

Day One: Day One is a journaling app at heart, but there’s nothing stopping you from using the app to house your study material. Day One accepts all sorts of media types, like audio snippets (transcribed audio snippets work very, very well), videos, photos, and scanned documents. And the app has fantastic exporting options, specifically in the fact you could choose to print all your knowledge in a hard or soft cover book. Searching for specific terms and information inside Day One is also a breeze, meaning you could use the app in a flash to bring up some old knowledge for a current task. Day One doesn’t have specific connective note-taking or back-linking features however, which may be a dealbreaker for some.

Bear, Drafts, or NotePlan 3: Each of these represent different takes on note-taking for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and each of their own respective all-star features:

  • I really like Bear’s tagging functionality, allowing you to whiz through organization of all your notes.
  • Drafts is the king of automation on iOS, providing options for you to manipulate your notes quickly and efficiently in your workflows.
  • NotePlan 3 does a tremendous job in linking notes to dates, providing you an easy way to bullet journal or track your notes and learning over time.

Each of these apps also has their pitfalls, at least when it comes to this long-term studying workflow:

  • Bear doesn’t offer as strong Apple Pencil support as other note-taking apps available.
  • Drafts is largely a text-first app, making it hard or impossible to capture non-textual forms of media like audio or video.
  • NotePlan 3 doesn’t handle inserted attachments (like photos or PDFs) particularly well, nor are there great exporting options that would work within other systems.

Ulysses: Like Day One, Ulysses could handle a lot of this study workflow. Ulysses excels in its backdoor automation and workflow features, allowing you to quickly capture information from across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. It’s also a great writing environment and exports to Microsoft Word with relative ease. Again though, I’d like to see improved Apple Pencil support provide handwriting access to my study notes.

Keep It and DEVONThink: I use Keep It regularly to store all my doodads and trinkets of interesting information and I’ve read a lot about DEVONThink on the Mac and iPad. Both of these apps are great for storing information, files, URLs and web links, PDFs, notes, and more. Keep It has a great web clipper, allowing you to quickly create a PDF of any web URL in a flash.

These apps, in my mind, are more geared towards storing information instead of processing information. I could see using Keep It or DEVONThink alongside an app like Craft or Roam Research, as you use the first to store anything and everything and you use the latter to process and formulate the information you’ve stored.

DEVONThink also doesn’t have a great iPad app, somewhat limiting its ability to be a one-stop-shop studying app on the iPad.

I purchased the first, second, and third generation iPads as they debuted year after year, hoping each year would result in more of my post-secondary studies being transformed. If 2021 Josh told 2011 Josh it would take the better part of 10 years before the iPad reached a stage where I could perform everything on the iPad, I’m sure I would have been astounded.

In ways, it’s frustrating it took so long to achieve this obvious end-game.

assignment book for ipad

In other ways though, Apple has introduced features and accessories that were never part of my initial outlook. I never dreamt of the Apple Pencil, for instance, and how it would combine the ability to hand-write and type on the same device. I never dreamt of apps that could so harmoniously showcase screenshots, highlights, videos, audio snippets, and drawings in one view.

(I also never dreamt it would take me this long to finish my studies. But here we are.)

assignment book for ipad

If I could give new students one single piece of advice, it would be to purchase an iPad, an Apple Pencil, and a Magic Keyboard. Together, this iPad package has eliminated heavy textbooks, kissed chargers goodbye, introduced audio and video recording to otherwise static lectures, debuted digital handwriting to future-proof your handwritten notes, and provided artificial intelligence to help you efficiently study for exams.

The iPad is simultaneously the world’s most powerful educational tool, the most powerful textbook, the most powerful spiral-bound notebook, and the most powerful flash card deck.

Kids don’t know how good they’ve got it these days.

7 Ways to Use an iPad for Studying & Research The iPad is a great tool for learning and taking beautiful and visually appealing notes. Let us explore different methods you can use the device for studying.

  • 0 Shares Share

Apple iPad 10th gen

The idea of technology was conceived out of the desire to ease life and daily struggles. True to its design, Apple’s iPad is fast becoming an indispensable tool for students. The device allows you to read textbooks, organize tasks, and access the Internet anywhere. It is basically a learning aid and a document carrier. Besides studying, you can use it to watch movies and play video games. An iPad condenses the daily struggles of a student into one biomechanically-friendly and transportable device. If you’re considering buying one, let us show you how to use an iPad to study and improve your education efficiently.

Taking notes

Most students take notes in books and pieces of paper. But when it’s time to read, they discover the paper is missing or forgot the book at home. The conventional form of writing in books adds to the weight of your backpack. You also need to track every book and worry about smudging your notes.

This is especially convenient when preparing for an important exam or writing a research paper. An organized system makes a whole difference in such a process. You can prepare everything for yourself or get  help by Papersowl , and it will be easy to send all of your notes via the internet. You will pay someone to write your research paper based on your own findings and thoughts.

iPads present a simple and flexible way to take notes. The design allows you to use the Apple Pencil, Magic keyboard, or Bluetooth keyboard for note-taking and retrieval. It serves as a single collection for storing all class notes instead of using multiple notebooks. Unlike physical books, you can leverage cloud services to access your writings from anywhere.

Podcasts & audiobooks

Backpacks are cumbersome, while iPads are compact. The size is perfect for convenient transport and uses anywhere. The top educational apps for iPad consist of over 200,000 applications that facilitate modern education. Examples include Photomath and StudyBlue. You can read from your device instead of writing in books. Not only this, but you can also listen to audiobooks while you focus on other tasks. Your iPad doubles as a reading device and you don’t need to spend money on subscriptions or wait weeks for your book to arrive.

Recording notes

The recording function is not exclusive to iPads. However, it is a feature worth mentioning. Recording your lecture notes is a handy learning method when you can’t make sense of anything your tutor is saying. If the school allows, download a voice recorder application that lets you record lectures and take notes at the same time.

Watching lectures online

Students watch lectures on their iPads regardless of where they are. Thanks to a split screen feature, you can watch and take notes. Built-in iSight or Facetime cameras allow undergraduates to chat with teachers and classmates using Skype or the FaceTime app. The camera is handy for taking high-resolution pictures, recording a 1080p high-definition video, and studying with your buddies from your home.

Draw, design, scan, & edit

Art students will find an iPad a handy tool for drawing and designing. Professional artists prefer it for digital art to most high-end drawing tablets. Besides artistic designs, you can make and edit videos, photos, and audio. Some apps like iMovie are default applications that come with the device. Nonetheless, you can download other design apps to create impressive artwork. You can also sign paper documents directly from your device without the need to use a scanner or download it on your computer. Furthermore, students use the device to create professional presentations.

Personal planner

The iPad is an amazing tool for planning your academic day or week. Instead of physical planners, you can write and edit with ease. A reminder feature also sends notifications to keep you up-to-date with your plans.

Entertainment

iPads are useful for unwinding when you don’t feel like studying. You can watch movies, read comics, or play games. But be careful so that it does not become a trap that distracts you from learning.

The Apple Pencil feature allows you to sign documents, annotate PDFs, and draw or write alongside texts in your notes. Users can also search texts for easy tracking and location.

Discover feature breakdowns, pricing comparisons, and expert tips to make an informed decision and unleash your inner writer on your iPad.

The iPad has become a beloved tool for writers of all stripes. Its portability, combined with the versatility of the Apple Pencil, makes it an ideal platform for jotting down ideas, composing documents, and even tackling full-length novels. But with a plethora of writing apps available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming.

This guide delves into the top contenders in the iPad writing app arena, catering to different writing styles and needs. We'll explore:

  • Note-Taking Powerhouses: Perfect for brainstorming, organizing research, and capturing fleeting thoughts.
  • Minimalist Marvels: Streamlined interfaces for distraction-free writing.
  • Organizational All-Stars: Apps that excel at structuring and managing large writing projects.
  • Content Creation Chameleons: Versatile tools for crafting various content formats, from blog posts to scripts.
  • Penmanship Perfection: Apps that prioritize the natural writing experience with the Apple Pencil.

By the end of this journey, you'll be equipped to identify the app that best complements your writing style and workflow.

Finding Your Perfect Match: A Look at Top iPad Writing Apps

The note-taking powerhouses: capture every spark of inspiration.

For many writers, the journey begins with capturing ideas. Note-taking apps excel at this crucial stage, allowing you to organize thoughts, research materials, and brainstorm freely. Here are some of the top contenders:

  • Apple Notes: Pre-installed on all iPads, Apple Notes offers a user-friendly interface for basic note-taking. It seamlessly integrates with other Apple devices and supports basic formatting options. While not feature-rich, it's a convenient option for casual note-taking.
  • Notability: A popular choice, Notability boasts a clean interface and robust features. It excels at handwriting recognition, allowing you to seamlessly switch between typing and writing with the Apple Pencil. Annotate PDFs, record lectures, and organize notes into folders for a comprehensive note-taking experience.
  • GoodNotes 5: Beloved for its realistic pen emulation and paper-like feel, GoodNotes 5 prioritizes the natural writing experience. Annotate PDFs, insert images, and utilize its powerful organization tools to categorize and manage your notes effectively.
  • Bear: This versatile app caters to writers and note-takers alike. Its clean interface encourages focused writing, while powerful formatting options and tagging capabilities ensure your notes stay organized. Bear also integrates seamlessly with other productivity tools, making it a great choice for streamlined workflows.
  • Evernote: A long-standing player, Evernote offers comprehensive note-taking features along with web clipping, to-do lists, and project management tools. Its powerful search functionality makes it ideal for organizing large amounts of information. However, the free tier comes with limitations, and the paid plans can be expensive.

Choosing the Right Note-Taking App:

Consider your needs. If basic note-taking with seamless Apple device integration suffices, Apple Notes might be enough. For more advanced features like handwriting recognition, organization tools, and PDF annotation, Notability, GoodNotes 5, or Bear are excellent choices. If you require comprehensive project management features alongside note-taking, Evernote could be a good fit.

For some writers, a clean and distraction-free interface is key to unlocking creativity. These minimalist apps prioritize a clutter-free environment to keep you focused on the flow of words.

Choosing the Right Organizational App:

If you're tackling complex narratives like novels or screenplays, Scrivener or Mariner are ideal choices. Their robust outlining and organizational features will keep you on track. Templates and formatting options make it ideal for formal writing tasks, reports, and creating polished content. However, the mobile app might feel less intuitive compared to some iPad-specific options.

It allows for dictation, real-time collaboration, and seamless syncing across devices. Draft caters well to writers who value portability and a distraction-free writing environment.

For writers on the go who prioritize a minimalist interface and dictation capabilities, Draft is worth exploring. If you need an app that caters to diverse content creation alongside long-form writing, Ulysses or Bear offer versatility.

This article will cover essential tips and tricks to use your iPad better when studying. From split-screen mode to digital flashcards, we've got you covered. So grab your iPad, get comfy, and read on!

image

Try digital flashcards

Several flashcard apps on the App Store make studying a breeze. They save paper and clutter and maximize the effective use of your time. You can easily shuffle cards, mark difficult items for later review, and even test yourself with built-in quizzes. Plus, some apps support sharing your flashcards with friends or classmates for collaborative studying. It's like having a custom portable study group in your pocket! So ditch the physical flashcards and embrace digital ones --- your backpack (and the environment) will thank you.

Secure your Data with Cloud Storage

Using cloud storage capabilities, students can easily store and retrieve their data, papers, and homework. You need only ensure you have an active internet connection. Cloud Storage rids you of the need to worry about data loss while working on your iPad, PC or any synchronized device. Moreover, it may be used to share information. When you decide to pay people to write essays , it's convenient to upload your requirements for an essay with this tool, and your professional writers will access it and complete the task easily.

Students may maintain order by categorizing and labeling different homework, projects, or courses in cloud storage. By adopting this feature, users may reduce clutter and easily find important information when needed.

Organize your apps

App organization makes a huge difference when using your device for studying. First, create a separate folder or page for your study-related apps. This will help you quickly locate them when you need them without swiping through endless pages of apps.

Use the iPad's " App Library " to automatically categorize your apps. Another helpful tip is to rearrange the apps to your preference. For instance, you can group note-taking apps, research apps together, and so on. The bottom line is to create an intuitive app setup. It'll save you time and frustration!

Use split-screen mode

The amazing split-screen mode on your iPad is a game-changer regarding multitasking and productivity. The split-screen mode allows you to have two apps open simultaneously. For a use case, you can take notes on one app while simultaneously researching on another app.

To activate the split-screen mode, swipe up to access the dock, then drag one app to the left/right screen side. Next, select the second app and drag it to the other side. Voila! You have two apps open. Both can be used simultaneously. Trust us, once you get the hang of it, you won't know how you ever studied without it!

image

Voice Dictation

With the voice Dictation feature, you can quickly and effortlessly dictate essays and other tasks using the inbuilt speech recognition software. This feature eliminates the need to rely solely on typing everything by hand. You can concentrate on your studies and finish other tasks more quickly.

Voice dictation can be especially beneficial for folks who struggle with writing due to physical limitations or learning disabilities. By leveraging this feature, they can also succeed in their academic pursuits and finish more in less time.

Take advantage of keyboard shortcuts

Instead of tapping away to perform simple tasks like copying and pasting, try using keyboard shortcuts. For instance, you can press "Command+C" to copy text and "Command+V" to paste it. "Command+Z" will undo a mistake, and "Command+A" selects all text.

These shortcuts may seem trivial, but they'll save you time. Plus, they elevate you to a tech-savvy wizard, which is always a plus! To view a list of available keyboard shortcuts, simply hold the "Command" key down. Give it a try, and you'll be amazed at how efficient you can be while studying without needing to pay for essay writing.

Use a stylus for note-taking

A stylus offers a whole new level of precision and control, way more than obtainable with merely your fingers. Not to mention, it feels way more natural. With a stylus, you can quickly jot down notes during lectures or draw diagrams for better understanding.

Plus, you can easily highlight important information without having to switch between tools. There are many stylus options, from fancy Apple Pencils to more affordable options. No matter which you pick, using a stylus for note-taking would simplify your study process.

Conclusions

We trust these pointers and methods have assisted you in understanding the full potential of your iPad for academic purposes. With some practice, you'll be proficient in juggling tasks, jotting down notes, and managing time.

Always remember that effective iPad usage is subjective and requires experimentation to determine what suits your learning style. Don't shy away from trying out various apps and the atypical tech tool until you find what works for you. Also, remember to take regular breaks, stretch your legs, and inhale some fresh air now and then.

To get the most use out of writing on an iPad, I recommend upgrading to a keyboard with trackpad. It’ll enable you to type faster. The dedicated Apple iPad keyboard is a good if expensive choice. Another cheaper option is available from Logitech.

Logitech SLIM FOLIO PRO Backlit Bluetooth Keyboard Case for iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd and 4th gen) - Graphite

  • LAPTOP-LIKE TYPING - Turn your iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd and 4th gen) into a laptop with Slim Folio Pro. Forget about cramped on-screen typing — now you can type quickly and accurately in comfort with a familiar laptop-like premium keyboard. With a full row of iOS shortcut keys and media controls you can optimize your productivity without leaving the keyboard.
  • BACKLIT KEYS - Type away, day or night. Backlit laptop-like keys with 3 adjustable levels of brightness lets you achieve maximum productivity anywhere.
  • FRONT AND BACK PROTECTION - Light and durable case with secure magnetic latch keeps iPad Pro closed and safe from bumps, scratches and spills. Viewing Angles: Fixed Type Mode: 58 degrees and View Mode: 10 degrees
  • CHARGE AND STOW APPLE PENCIL (2ND GEN) - Charge Apple Pencil (2nd gen) with the case on. When you're done writing, store Apple Pencil inside keyboard case and use the magnetic latch to keep it closed and secured in transit.
  • 3 MONTH BATTERY AND RELIABLE BLUETOOTH - Take keyboard anywhere without worrying about short battery life. Lasts 3 months on a single charge based on 2 hours daily use. Enjoy easy one-time Bluetooth setup to connect iPad Pro and keyboard case.

I’ve written and published dozens of articles for newspapers, magazines, and online publications including, Forbes and Lifehacker. I’m also a best-selling non-fiction author, a trained journalist, and a copywriter.

I regularly update this roundup as iOS and its app ecosystem evolves. I test new iPad apps and tools by writing drafts of articles, book chapters, and blog posts on an iPad Pro, iPhone 11, and iMac. Along with other writers, I also compare each app in terms of price, functionality, and ease of use.

The Final Word on the Best Writing Apps for iPad

In the end, you can find many different iPad writing apps. If you’re looking for the best writing apps for iPad, then these apps might be able to help you expedite your writing process. Find one on the App Store and start writing!

I use an Apple iPad Pro to occasionally write short articles on the go. It’s comparable to writing on a laptop, and it’s gotten easier now that the latest iPad keyboard includes a trackpad. That said, I still prefer editing larger projects on iMac as I can tab between windows faster. Writing on an iPad using only the screen is harder however.

if you can afford it, I’d recommend buying the 12.9 inch iPad Pro. The screen looks fantastic and it’s a joy to use. If budget is an issue or you expect to travel, opt for the 11 inch. That said, you can easily write using an iPad Air.

You can easily use an iPad to write the first draft of a book using one of the apps in this article paired with a keyboard. However, for self-editing a book, I’d recommend using a computer or laptop and a Mac app, as it’s more efficient when working with multiple manuscripts and feedback from an editor.

Yes, they are, assuming you buy a keyboard. An iPad is portable. It’s also ideal for a minimalist distraction-free writing environment meaning you can take it with you and write wherever, whenever. Just remember to buy a keyboard by Logitech or Apple.

What Is an Assignment Book

What Is an Assignment Book?

An assignment book, also known as a homework planner or student planner, is a tool used by students to keep track of their assignments, deadlines, and important dates. It is an essential organizational tool that helps students manage their time and stay on top of their academic responsibilities. Assignment books come in various formats such as physical notebooks, digital apps, or online platforms, providing students with different options to choose from based on their preferences and needs.

The purpose of an assignment book is to help students develop effective study habits, improve time management skills, and reduce stress related to academic tasks. By utilizing an assignment book, students can plan their study schedule, set achievable goals, and prioritize their assignments. It acts as a visual reminder of upcoming tasks, ensuring that students do not miss any deadlines or forget important dates. Additionally, it serves as a communication tool between students, teachers, and parents, allowing them to stay informed about the progress and workload of the student.

FAQs about Assignment Books:

1. Why should I use an assignment book?

Using an assignment book can significantly improve your academic performance by helping you stay organized and manage your time effectively. It ensures that you never miss a deadline, forget about an assignment, or experience last-minute stress. By jotting down your tasks and deadlines, you can plan ahead and break down large assignments into smaller, manageable tasks.

2. What are the different types of assignment books available?

There are several options available when it comes to choosing an assignment book. Physical assignment books are the traditional choice, where you can write down your assignments and deadlines manually. Digital apps and online platforms offer a more convenient option, allowing you to access your assignments from anywhere using your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

3. How do I choose the right assignment book for me?

When choosing an assignment book, consider your personal preferences and needs. If you prefer writing things down and having a physical copy, a traditional assignment book may be the best choice for you. However, if you prefer digital organization and the ability to access your assignments on multiple devices, a digital app or online platform may be more suitable.

4. How do I effectively use an assignment book?

To effectively use an assignment book, start by writing down all your assignments, deadlines, and important dates as soon as you receive them. Break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable chunks and allocate specific time slots for each task. Regularly review your assignment book and update it accordingly. Make it a habit to check your assignment book every day and cross off completed tasks to stay motivated.

5. Can an assignment book help me with time management?

Yes, an assignment book is an excellent tool for improving time management skills. By having a clear overview of your assignments and their respective deadlines, you can allocate time for each task and avoid procrastination. It allows you to prioritize your tasks, ensuring that you complete them on time and avoid last-minute rush.

In conclusion, an assignment book is a valuable tool for students to stay organized, manage their time effectively, and reduce stress related to academic tasks. It helps students track their assignments, deadlines, and important dates, while also serving as a communication tool between students, teachers, and parents. By utilizing an assignment book, students can develop effective study habits, improve time management skills, and enhance their academic performance. Whether you prefer a physical notebook or a digital app, incorporating an assignment book into your daily routine can greatly benefit your academic journey.

What makes a good writing app?

Put simply, what makes a writing app good for you will depend on the kind of writer that you are.

  • If you’re an author , you might be interested in a writing app with outlining, planning, and formatting functionalities.
  • If you’re a student , you’re probably in the market for a writing app that blocks out distractions while you’re writing.
  • If you’re a screenwriter , you’ll want a writing app that’s specifically dedicated to writing screenplays.

Or, if you’re none of the above, worry not: that’s why we built this directory of writing apps. Whatever you need, we’ve gathered the outstanding writing apps of 2024 across multiple categories (drafting, editing, note-taking, etc) and platforms (Android, iOS, online browsers, etc) in one place. Feel free to use the filters to make your quest for the perfect writing app even easier!

So what are the best writing apps of 2024?

We can now put an end to the age-old debate of which writing app is best: Microsoft Word vs. Google Docs ?

The answer, of course, is neither! Hopefully, this directory will point you towards a much better match that actually fulfills your writing needs. We objectively evaluated each writing app based on four metrics.

  • Performance: How seamlessly does the writing app do what it’s purported to do? How good is the user experience, from top to bottom?
  • Features: How many bells and whistles are built into the app to augment its use?
  • Accessibility: Is it widely available on many different operating platforms (e.g. iOS, Windows, mobile, desktop, etc)?
  • Value: Is it worth the cost that it would take to download it?

Here are some general recommendations to give you a headstart.

15 Creative and digital book report ideas that will get your students excited to read

assignment book for ipad

Not all students are excited to read a book. So how can you make reading a book more engaging and fun? This is a huge challenge for most teachers, so I hope I can help you out!

Here’s what you’ll find in this blog post (click on the title if you want to jump to the section directly)

5 tips to get your students excited about reading

  • 15 creative and digital book report lesson plans (free & ready to use!)
  • The complete collection of book report lesson ideas in one assignment (your students get to choose!)

Instructions on how to use these digital book report lesson activities

Before you dive into the book reports, you have to get your students excited about reading first. In this previous post about reading, I’ve listed 10 tips that will encourage your students to read . I’ve come up with 5 more amazing tips! Here we go:

1. Use AR apps

assignment book for ipad

Here are a few apps with amazing storylines and AR books.

  • Wonderscope , for example, is an excellent storytelling tool. It uses augmented reality to transform ordinary places into real-time stories. Students also learn to read with the app. They ask questions to the characters in the story and listen to the characters’ answers.
  • The Ghostkeeper’s journal and field guide : This book is an immersive adventure for readers aged 10 and up, offering several AR experiences to enhance the storyline. These are accessed via a mobile app “ Ghost-o-Matic ”.
  • Bookful creates an engaging reading experience and brings stories and characters in books to life. The app holds the world’s largest 3D/AR library with hundreds of titles from leading publishers and brands such as: The Tale of Peter Rabbit, DK’s Encyclopedia, and children’s favorites such as Barbie, My Little Pony, Thomas & Friends, Transformers, and The Smurfs.

2. Escape lessons

assignment book for ipad

Here are 3 fun ready-to-use escape lessons to spark your students’ joy of reading:

  • A Halloween Murder : Let your students investigate the murder of the victim: Brat Spook. When they find the murderer, they get their “inspector” badge. Let them look for evidence in the murder scene, talk to suspects, analyze lab results, and so on!
  • Finding Rudolph : Save Christmas by helping Santa find back Rudolph. Students go through different challenges, talk to eye-witnesses, and follow Rudolph through a winter maze, so Santa can deliver all the presents to the children.
  • Easter Bunny Substitute : Can your students find a good Easter Bunny replacement? In the last breakout game for the classroom, the Easter Bunny is hurt, so your students need to interview the possible applicants and take tests to replace the Easter Bunny themselves. If they succeed in the challenges, they get an Easter Bunny substitute badge.

3. Storytelling

assignment book for ipad

If you bring cultural elements into your lessons by telling a story, your students will be more eager to learn. Storytelling makes students want to “live the story”. And they do this by reading it. If your story is strong enough, your students will love learning and reading. They will even remember the lesson content better.

Here’s a fun & ready-to-use example: The life of William Shakespeare

4. First chapters

assignment book for ipad

5. Books & sleepovers

assignment book for ipad

You can even add different parts to your sleepover. For example, let students read their favorite passage in a book of choice out loud, and 1 hour before bedtime, all your students take their book and read in silence. Or how about creating cozy themed corners? Fantasy, science fiction, detectives,… When your students are reading in themed corners, they get the full experience. They can even dress up as a character in their book whilst reading.

15 Creative and digital book report lesson plans

Step 1: Get your students excited about reading. ✅ Step 2: make sure they don’t lose their interest when you’re announcing the book report assignment! ☑️ This part can be demotivating.

As the lower grade students often still get fun book report assignments, the higher grade students often get a dull worksheet where they have to describe the characters and give a summary. Change up your book report assignments with these creative, free & ready-to-use lesson ideas.

Take a look at all these ready-to-use and free digital book report activities. They’re all made with BookWidgets . You can even make exercises like these yourself in your own BookWidgets account.

Keep on reading to find out how to use these exercises in your lessons.

How did your students experience the book? Let them fill the glasses with drawings of the storyline/the book. The glasses represent the view of the students. Students can get really creative and use the toolbar at the bottom to draw and type.

You can ask your students to present their book report artworks to the other students as well. This way, your students can explain what’s on their drawing.

2. Bookworm

3. Timeline

This interactive book report asks your students to create a timeline of the story. When did what happen, chronologically? The have to add the biggest events in the story to the timeline.

Creative book report with timeline

4. Comic book

In this book report exercise, your students have to write a comic book based upon the book they’ve just read. When they click on the “start” icon, they can choose fitting text balloons to go with their story.

Here are three other fun websites that let students create comic books: Storyboard That , Comic Life , and Toonytool . They already give you creative templates and drawings. This is a bit easier for students. This way, they don’t have to start from scratch.

Creative book report - Comic book

5. Character portrait

Creative book report - Character portrait

6. Randomness task

Just… add a little spice. I’ve turned the ordinary book report task, where students have to describe characters, the setting, plot, etc., into an exciting one. Your students don’t know yet what they’ll have to describe. They spin the randomness wheel and their task appears. The fun thing about this one is that all of your students will write a different book report.

Creative book report - bookworm

7. Book cover

Here, students get to be creative and invent their own book cover (front and back) of the book they just read. Or maybe just a cover for of a piece of text you’ve read out loud. They can use the whiteboard tools: pencil, type tool, switch colors, add images, etc.

Creative book report - book cover

8. Character family tree

This digital mind map exercise allows your students to add boxes with text and connect them to each other. This is perfect for a book report activity focusing on the characters in their book.

Creative book report - family tree

9. Facebook Profile

Modern days call for modern book report lesson ideas. Image the main character having a Facebook profile. What would be on it? That’s exactly what your students have to figure out here. Create a Facebook profile about the main character.

Creative book report - Facebook profile

10. Book Collage

Here, students have to add 10 pictures or images that have to do with the book. They can do so by clicking on the photo icon and adding images into their collage.

Creative book report - family tree

11. Mirror selfie

In this creative book report, students have to dress up like the character in their book, including holding 3 attributes that refer to the personality of the main character. They have to take a picture or mirror selfie of themselves dressed up, and add that picture to the whiteboard. You can ask them to come forward and present their images and explain why they’ve chosen those specific attributes.

The fun thing about all of these exercises is that they work on smartphones as well. So in this case, students can just open the exercise on their smartphones, take a mirror selfie with their phones and add it to the mirror in the digital whiteboard exercise.

Creative book report - Mirror selfie

12. Email to the author

Your students have the chance to write a friendly email or letter to the author of the book they just read. Students have to share:

  • their opinion;
  • the character in the book they liked most, and why;
  • their favorite part of the book and why;
  • questions that they have about the book.

If you have an email address of the author, ask your students to submit their works to you, the teacher, first. After having given feedback on their letters, they can make some changes and send it over to the author.

If you have the author’s postal address, it’s much more fun to write a classic letter.

Creative book report - Letter to the author

13. Conversation between characters

There is something called a “texting thumb” or a “smartphone pinky”. This shows that students like to send texts. A lot of them. So why not include it in your book report lesson plan? In this digital book report, students have to invent a conversation between two characters in their book.

Creative book report - Conversation with a character

14. Movie vs. Book

A lot of books have a movie version too. If your students choose a book that also has a movie, it’s interesting to let your students make a comparison. With this book report exercise, you’re also sure your students actually read the book instead of just watching the movie and write a summary of the movie and not the book.

Creative book report - movie vs book

15. Emoji summary

The last exercise is also one students can relate to. Nowadays, we use emojis after almost every sentence when we’re communicating with friends. Emojis also have a strong meaning and can be used to express feelings or say something without actually saying it.

Creative book report - Emoji summary

The complete collection of book report lesson ideas in one assignment

All these book report exercises are so much fun and yet they don’t take up a lot of time. Perhaps they just ask your students to only describe a certain part about the book. Cue… the planner widget.

With this type of BookWidgets activity, you can combine several lessons into one. You can let your students take matters into their own hands and choose which book report activities they’d like to finish.

It’s actually pretty easy. Your students read the instructions in the instructions widget and then start adding at least three book report activities to their planner. They finish the activities, submit them to their teacher, check off their planner, and that’s it!

Creative book report - Collection

Above, you can find the 15 ready-to-use book report activities. You can use these lesson examples for free. Since they’re all made with BookWidgets, I’ve listed them in this BookWidgets group . Here’s what you need to do:

  • Click on this link . It will immediately bring you to the group with all of the book report activities. If you don’t have a BookWidgets account yet, you’ll have to sign up first for free .
  • Duplicate all the book report activities. Click on the settings wheel , select all widgets , click on the settings wheel again, choose duplicate selected widgets . Choose where you want to save the activities in your BookWidgets account.
  • Go to your saved book report lessons. You can now click on the black dropdown arrow next to the ‘Show’ button of a particular exercise and select Edit . You can make some changes to this activity (if you want). If it’s perfect for you, click on Share in the upper right corner.
  • Share this link with your students. When they click on it, they can fill it out. A lot of the book report examples above have been made with BookWidgets’ Whiteboard widget, in which students can use the tool menu at the bottom to switch tools (draw, type,…), and to switch colors. When done, they can submit the book reports to you by clicking on the envelope in the upper right corner.
  • As a teacher, you go to “Grades & reporting” in BookWidgets to find your students’ answers.

Of course, now that you’ve got your own BookWidgets account, you can also create book report activities or other assignments yourself!

Attention! Once your free trial runs out, you’ll only be able to use the widgets you’ve already finished/shared with students. While your BookWidgets account will still work and you’ll still get your students’ results with the free BookWidgets version, you won’t be able to duplicate widgets nor create new widgets yourself anymore.

So that’s it! I hope these lesson ideas are useful for your classroom or at least give you lots of new ideas for your book report lessons! You can even create ones yourself!

Best iPad apps for writers in 2022

William Gallagher's Avatar

Last updated 2 years ago

There are still people who think that iPads are only good for consuming content like watching films, reading books and playing games. Clearly, none of these people have tried to write on a Kindle.

For writers, the iPad does offer every bit of this content consumption, and it offers it extremely well. But every iPad, iPad mini , iPad Air , and iPad Pro is also a writing studio that is about as light and convenient as you could imagine, and at least as powerful as you could hope.

You really should buy some kind of external keyboard, or keyboard case, if you're going to be doing serious writing on any iPad. Typing thousands of words onto the glass is not ideal, and the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro and now also iPad Air isn't essential.

But you want one of those options and you don't want the other.

Beyond that, you are able to do just about every type of prose writing you need to on an iPad, straight out of the box. Without any other apps than Apple provides, you have a full word processing solution in Pages, for instance.

There are things Pages is poor at, though, such as scripts and screenplays. They can be written in Pages in theory, but in practice, it's no better at them than Word is.

So there are specific needs to use alternative apps, and there are plenty of alternative apps to satisfy requirements like that. Plus there are apps that do the same thing yet one just works better for you than others.

Microsoft Word

It's like the ancient old days when you might have a preference for which type of pencil you use. You know they all get the job done, yet just one is right for you.

That does mean that any roundup of the best writing apps for iPad is unquestionably subjective. And any unquestionably subjective roundup is bound to leave out your favorites.

Don't take that as a failing, do take it as your opportunity to enthuse in the AppleInsider forums. And also this: the reason people get very passionate about writing apps for the iPad is that they are worth it.

Apple will never say that it only makes iPads for writers, but they're so good for all writers and authors that you have to wonder.

Main word processors for iPad

We used to write everything in one word processor, whether it was a novel or a shopping list. We did so partly because they were built to handle everything, but mostly because they were so expensive that you only ever bought one.

That's changed because of the iPad and the App Store, but while there is a booming market in more specialized writing tools, there are still a couple of heavyweights that would could make a case for being your sole text editor.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft made a mistake choosing to keep Word off the iPad for years. Once users were required to find alternatives, they did, and they also found that they liked them.

Then once a user has moved to an alternative on the iPad, they very easily moved to the same alternative on the Mac. And what they routinely found was that this alternative, whichever it was, didn't crash as often as Word, it didn't drive them spare twice a day.

So Microsoft Word went from being a synonym for word processor and into just one more of your choices.

It has not come close to reclaiming the total dominance it once had. But when it did come to the iPad, it came in a completely new and rewritten form — which was better than we'd had on the Mac.

That wasn't to say it was as powerful, but starting from scratch meant adding in only features that users need. The bloated Word for Mac was regenerated into the slim Word for iPad, and there is a huge amount to like about it.

Microsoft Word is a free download from the App Store, but then requires one of many alternative subscriptions starting from $6.99 per month.

Pages

Apple Pages

Pages — free on iPads, Macs and iPhones — does not get as much love as it should. Where Microsoft likes you to see how powerful it is by displaying every tool and option it can, Apple wants you to be able to just get on with your writing.

Consequently, Pages hides away its powerful features until you need them. And unfortunately, that can have the effect of making it look as if Pages does not have these features.

Pages looks simple but it's not just a note-taking app. It is not as powerful as Word, but for the giant majority of writing tasks, Pages is Word's equal — and can subjectively feel better to you.

Only, Word and Pages both date back to the days when everything we wrote was then printed out on paper to be sent to publishers. Today you might be struggling to remember where your printer is.

Word and Pages continue to be used for writing that is going online, or certainly being sent digitally to book publisher systems like Affinity Publisher and Adobe InDesign . But they are not ideal for it.

Worse than not being ideal, if you copy text from either of them — most especially Word — and then paste it into an online content management system, you can get problems. Peculiar formatting, odd characters, even unexpected spacing issues can all arise because these two produce heavily formatted text.

Between a word processor and a text editor

You can't really have both a full word processor without issues like this, but you can have tools that do tiny, specific writing tasks. And you can have some in the middle, neither full word processors nor bare text editors, yet somehow better than both.

The iPad and Mac app iA Writer is a calming, relaxing kind of writing tool which lacks the powerful features of Word and Pages, such as longform book options, but will make you not care.

For iA Writer knows that writing has to be written, that it has to be put down on screen from out of the writer's head. Until then, there's nothing to format, nothing to create footnote citations about.

So this app concentrates on pushing aside features, interruptions, and really even any non-essential options. It's for making you concentrate on your writing.

For the iPad version, iA Writer costs $30 on the App Store.

Drafts 5 (the text is greyed-out because the actions panel is showing on the left)

Now Drafts 5 practically bills itself as a text editor, which is a way of saying you can basically type into it but mustn't expect anything fancy. Except Drafts 5 is replete with fancy tools and options.

Its chief aim is to get you writing immediately. Start the app, start typing. No pause, no waiting for a moment, no tapping on a New or a Plus sign.

There's also no obvious formatting, no obvious controls, it's just a blank page for you to get your words down. There is formatting, though, you can use Markdown controls to set headings and bold, italic and so on.

And what's great about Drafts, beyond just the practical feel of it all, is that once you do have your words written, there is an enormous amount you can do. Take that text and email it directly to your publisher, send it to your Kindle, send it out as a text message, or publish as a blog.

Drafts 5, which is also on the Mac and iPhone, has a library of Actions that let you create whole workflows for your work.

Drafts 5 is free to download from the App Store, and then costs $20 per year.

Specialized prose writing apps for iPad

Somewhere between the word processors of this world and the better text editors, there are apps that you might call writing studios, or writing environments. They are apps that work to help you with the business of writing as well as the job of typing text.

Scrivener, for instance, knows that when you're writing a novel, you are in it for the long haul. It knows you may need research, and it definitely knows that once you're up around 80,000 words or more, you need help keeping track of everything.

So Scrivener will let you write sixty chapters one after another if that's what you like, but it will also then slice that text up. If you have a character who only appears in chapters 4, 7, 11, and 33, then you can have Scrivener show you solely those chapters.

Scrivener

Look at the entire manuscript to get the whole picture, or concentrate on a specific segment. Scrivener bounces between both of these as you want, and it also offers a slew of extra writing, or rather writer, tools.

Such as how it handles research. You can drag images, URLs, whole web pages, and even entire other documents into the research section of your book.

Then whenever you open your iPad to write, everything you need is there. And when you're ready to send the manuscript to a publisher, they get everything — except the research.

Scrivener for iPad costs $20 on the App Store.

Ulysses is a curious writing environment for writers, one that is either completely compelling or just does not feel right to you at all. Rather than having documents per se, Ulysses offers you one single app with one single file — within which you can create countless pieces of writing.

Those are called Sheets in Ulysses and, like Scrivener, you can write them all in one go or you can slice them up.

Ulysses

It's a Markdown editor which means it feels bare, like Drafts can, and it doesn't have the same full-feature sense that Scrivener does. But wherever you go, whenever you open your iPad, you don't just have your latest writing, you have all of your writing.

All of it. Every bit since you started using Ulysses, anyway, and that grows into a very compellingly handy library of all your work.

Ulysses is free to download, then costs around $40 per year. It's also available as part of Setapp .

Specialized writing tools for scripts

As yet, there's no breakout hit app for writing haiku poetry. But there are a lot of apps for writing scripts and screen plays.

Scrivener is one of them. As well as prose, you can switch to a scriptwriting mode in Scrivener and it is a good writing tool for screenplays.

Screenplays have very specific formats and margins, developed over the last century and every bit is the way it is for a reason. It could be a reason that helps location scouts later on, rather than being any use to the writer now, but each reason is real and each formatting requirement is needed.

And they are just fiddly enough that it's only right an iPad should do as much of that work for you as possible. Let you concentrate on what's happening in the script, while your writing app looks after making it readable on the screen.

Final Draft 12

The most famous and the longest-running screenwriting app is Final Draft, now in version 12. It is very, very good on the Mac and PC.

Don't ask any Final Draft user if there's anything they dislike about it, you haven't got time, but still it's very, very good.

Whereas the iPad app is just good, approaching pretty good. It's had some bugs over the years and the company's support hasn't always been marvellous, but there are writers who solely use the iPad version and don't even have a Mac.

Final Draft

If they did have a Mac, they'd find out that the computer version of Final Draft is expensive. For Mac, it's officially $250 , though it tends to go on sale a great deal, and once you have one the company is good at selling you upgrades that are expensive, but seem cheap next to buying the full thing.

On the iPad, though, it costs $9.99 on the App Store. It's some writers' sole professional tool and it costs less than a book.

Alternatively, there is also Celtx, which used to be practically a clone of Final Draft and has the advantage that it's free on the App Store.

As yet, there isn't an iPad version of what might be Final Draft's best competitor on the Mac, Highland 2 . It's modern, slick, and it's built by professional, working screenwriters with long success in the industry.

They say that an iPad version is in the works, but no release date has been announced yet.

Utilities for writers

You could spend all your writing time just checking out utility apps for writers, like dictionaries and outliners and programs that make up your plot for you.

However, save yourself some trouble. Skip those ones where they say you just put in a name and choose a genre like comedy or western, and they'll outline your story for you.

But speaking of outlines... You may not be the kind of writer who plans anything out, you could be a pantser — one who writes by the seat of their pants.

Whether you like outlines or not, you can be required to write them for certain publishers or producers. When that's the last requirement before they start paying you, suddenly you can get to be very fond of outliners.

OmniOutliner

Try OmniOutliner 3 for iPad when you have any thing like a book structure to create, or an event to program. It's free to download and try, then costs from $19 .

There is an outliner in Word, but it's built for academics and is like working in treacle. There was an outliner in Pages, but Apple removed it.

Actually, you can jury-rig an outline in Pages using heading styles, but moving around it, changing text, grouping ideas together, it's as bad as Word.

Scrivener also has its own outliner and that's pretty powerful. But the separate, standalone OmniOutliner is the kind of writing tool that turns you from a user into a fan.

The best writing apps for iPad

This has been about the best writing apps for iPad, but it's really about the best writing apps for writers and those are on the iPad. We are now most definitely spoiled for choice for straight writing tools, and it is a fantastic thing.

And we have even more choice when it comes to writing being part of a larger project, a larger business. Then there are apps like Notion and Craft which are good for handling lots of information, or DEVONthink which is like a bionic research and writing too.

There may never be an end to the best writing apps for iPad, and there certainly won't be an end to the debate over just what constitutes the best.

But what doesn't change is that each of these runs on every iPad from the regular one, through the iPad mini, and on up to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro . We can have superb writing apps, and we can have them anywhere we go.

After you write your novel, you may want to try to publish it. We'll be talking about that very soon.

You're doing screenwriters a disservice in not mentioning WriterDuet - platform agnostic, device agnostic.  It just works.

I’ve written six novels in Scrivener, but the iPad version, sadly, is so “fat” that you can barely see a single page in it. The great thing about the macOS version is that you can see your writing and a bunch of panes at the same time (outline, metadata, notes, references, split views horizontally or vertically, etc.), to taste. The iPad version can squeeze in a few views (at the expense of content), but it’s all aimed at finger navigation and feels shoehorned in. I bought it, but it’s claustrophobic to look at.  Unrelated: another outlining app that’s been getting a lot of attention in the last week or so is Bike: https://www.hogbaysoftware.com/bike/

A shame the mere existence of a writing app isn’t enough motivation for some to just write, but these are good apps. Right, well… write well!

Thank you for the thoughtful write up.  I am writing a book that has a unique, smaller page size that “standard”. I also want to include drawings, pages with quotes, pages with pictures.  A combination of visual drawing and written word.   My desire is to find a software program that allows me to create a template for each page, so I know what will fit on each page. Then I am able to format the written word, and also format my drawing and images on pages.   Then I’d also like to be able to move pages around, so that I am sure which pages are facing each other. For example, if I want to do a drawing that is on 2 pages, I want to be sure that they are facing each other (not back to back/requiring a page turn).   I’d love suggestions or ideas about software for the iPad that you’d suggest for this project.  With a deep bow of gratitude.

Key Takeaways

  • For an immersive reading experience free from interruptions, a Kindle is a superior choice.
  • A Kindle offers superior battery life compared to iPads for extended reading.
  • Many Kindle models are water-resistant, offering protection against accidental spills.

There's nothing quite like curling up in bed with a paperback and a good cup of coffee. However, digital reading is slowly stepping up its game. While I use an iPad for my coursework at university, I now prefer my Kindle for reading.

1 Fewer Distractions

Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro

The iPad is now closer than ever to becoming a complete replacement for the MacBook. Ultimately, this means that you can use a lot of the applications you'd use on your MacBook on your iPad as well. Since I can't carry my MacBook with me everywhere, I have work and all my university-related apps like Goodnotes and Google Classroom on my iPad as well. I also have entertainment apps like Netflix installed on my iPad for times when I need a break from solving hundreds of calculus questions.

However, because I receive time-sensitive notifications from these apps, I can’t disable receiving push notifications from them. When I'm reading, the last thing I want is to receive a notification that an assignment of mine has been graded or that a professor of mine left feedback on an assignment. Instead, I prefer being fully immersed in my book and stopping only when I choose, rather than being interrupted by a notification.

Although I could create a custom Focus mode on my iPad for reading, the presence of all those apps makes it hard to fully immerse myself in a book. So, even when I'm in the midst of reading a really interesting book, I keep anxiously swiping up and opening those apps and checking if there's something that needs my attention.

Meanwhile, it's a completely different story on an eReader, like the Kindle. No notifications, no apps, no phone calls—just me and my book.

2 I Can Read for Hours

amazon kindle on yellow background

I currently use the 5th-Generation iPad Air for university, which Apple claims can deliver up to ten hours of wireless web surfing or video playback. On the other hand, the Kindle Paperwhite offers up to ten weeks of battery life.

For readers like me who might pick up a book, set it aside for a few days, and return to it later, the Kindle is ideal. Unlike the iPad, which can drain battery power even when in sleep mode, the Kindle lasts much longer between charges, ensuring that your reading is always ready to pick up right where you left off.

Its extended battery life means you rarely need to recharge, unlike the iPad, which, despite its commendable battery life, can simply not compete with the Kindle’s 10-week battery life. So, regardless of which Kindle model you decide to purchase, battery life shouldn't be a concern.

3 A Kindle is Much Kinder on My Eyes

When you start reading a good book and get hooked, hours can pass in what feels like minutes—time quite literally flies. If you read for hours on end, the Kindle is a much better option than an iPad. The Kindle's e-ink display is gentle on the eyes and features a built-in front light for comfortable night reading.

Some models, like the 11th-Generation Kindle Paperwhite, also offer a Warm Light option. While the iPad's glossy display is great, reading on it in direct sunlight is almost impossible. On the other hand, you'll have no trouble reading on a Kindle under bright sunshine.

4 A Kindle is Water-Resistant

Before I begin reading a book, I need to be in a comfortable and cozy environment. My perfect reading atmosphere includes a soft blanket, a free schedule, and a good cup of coffee. Unfortunately, I don’t have the best track record when it comes to keeping drinks and technology together.

For example, I once accidentally dropped my iPhone into a steaming cup of coffee while reading. So, reading on a water-resistant device is a major plus point for me. While iPhones have an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, no iPad currently has an IP rating.

On the other hand, the Kindle Oasis (9th-Generation and above) and the Kindle Paperwhite (10th-Generation and above) have an IPX8 rating. According to the Ingress Protection scale , this means that the Kindle eReader can withstand being submerged in up to two meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes.

There is a difference between waterproof and water-resistant . While no iPad is water-resistant or waterproof, no Kindle model is completely waterproof either, despite Amazon's claims . However, the IPX8 rating provides significant protection against accidental water damage.

So, for those who enjoy reading with a drink in hand or by the beach, a Kindle Paperwhite is far superior to an iPad (and even a physical book)!

5 It Almost Replicates the Feeling of Reading a Physical Book

kindle ereader on top of real book

I’ve always been a physical book person. You'll catch me at every book fair possible! However, being addicted to books comes at a cost. Not only are books expensive nowadays, but finding a place to store them is another challenge.

While I was initially really hesitant about getting a Kindle to read, I noticed that it can replicate the feeling of a physical book. The Kindle’s e-ink display mimics the appearance of ink on paper, providing a more book-like reading experience compared to a backlit screen.

Its lightweight and portable design makes it easy to hold, unlike my iPad, which is nearly twice as heavy. While the iPad doesn't feel particularly heavy when I use it for studying, it becomes cumbersome for extended reading sessions due to its weight. It took me a while to adjust to the Kindle, but once I did, it became hard to go back to reading physical books.

Ultimately, it comes down to what suits your preferences. If you'd like to purchase a device to read only, you won't find a better device than a Kindle. However, if you'd like to do more than just read occasionally, investing in an iPad would be a much better decision.

If you have both, you can sync your Kindle reading progress with the Kindle app on your iPad. This way, you can switch seamlessly between devices. Additionally, you can send eBooks and documents from your iPhone or iPad to your Kindle to further enhance your reading experience and expand your digital library.

M4 Mac release schedule: Here’s when to expect new Macs

Avatar for Ryan Christoffel

Apple’s M4 chip debuted on the iPad Pro , but it’s coming to Macs very soon. Unlike prior M-series chips, M4 upgrades are coming to the full lineup of Mac products . From the MacBook Air to the MacBook Pro and Mac Studio, here’s when to expect all of Apple’s new M4 Macs to release.

Fall 2024: M4 MacBook Pro, Mac mini, iMac

M3 MacBook Pro

If you’re in the market for a new MacBook Pro, Mac mini, or iMac, you won’t have to wait long.

These three Mac models, per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman , are all set for M4 updates this fall. They’ll likely be introduced at an October event.

All existing MacBook Pro models will receive the M4 chip. Like last year’s M3 releases, expect to see a more affordable 14-inch with the standard M4. The main attraction, though, will be premium 14-inch and 16-inch models boasting the M4 Pro and M4 Max.

Don’t expect to see any other major changes to the MacBook Pro, as the new chip will be the primary draw.

smaller Mac mini concept

The M4 Mac mini, meanwhile, is scoring a redesign this year. It will be shrunk down to a smaller size than ever before. It’s expected to be similar in dimensions to the Apple TV 4K.

This new Mac mini will be available with a standard M4 chip or upgraded to an M4 Pro.

Finally, the iMac is also getting an M4 before the end of the year. Little else is known about the update, but I know the one feature on my wish list: USB-C accessories .

Spring 2025: M4 MacBook Air

MacBook Air M3 15-inch deals

Apple’s most popular Mac was just updated to the M3 chip earlier this year, but an M4 MacBook Air is expected for spring 2025 .

The 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air will be updated simultaneously to the M4 chip, but any changes beyond the processor bump are unknown.

It’s unlikely Apple will introduce any notable hardware revisions, since the MacBook Air was just redesigned with the M2 model. As a result, if you’re in the market for a MacBook Air today, the M4 may not be worth the wait over existing options.

Summer 2025: M4 Mac Studio, Mac Pro

Switch to Mac Studio not Mac Pro | 2019 Mac Pro with 2023 Mac Studio

The last two Macs to get the M4 chip will unsurprisingly be the most powerful.

Apple’s desktop powerhouses, the Mac Studio and Mac Pro, are expected to launch M4 updates around the middle of 2025 —perhaps at WWDC.

These machines will likely be the first to include an M4 Ultra chip, alongside a cheaper M4 Max option for at least the Mac Studio.

Other details on the Mac Studio and Mac Pro are minimal so far. One thing to watch is the chance of one or both products receiving hardware redesigns. The Studio might follow the pattern of the Mac mini and shrink some. I’d put my money on a Mac Pro change, though, as it’s overdue for a new form factor.

The full M4 lineup in one year

If Apple is able to meet the timeline above, it will have updated every single Mac to a new chip in less than a full year.

In some ways, that’s the dream of Apple silicon .

Whether a Mac is due for a big redesign, or would simply benefit from a spec bump, Apple is able to push updates faster than it ever could before.

How to cite ChatGPT

We, the APA Style team, are not robots. We can all pass a CAPTCHA test , and we know our roles in a Turing test . And, like so many nonrobot human beings this year, we’ve spent a fair amount of time reading, learning, and thinking about issues related to large language models, artificial intelligence (AI), AI-generated text, and specifically ChatGPT . We’ve also been gathering opinions and feedback about the use and citation of ChatGPT. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and shared ideas, opinions, research, and feedback.

In this post, I discuss situations where students and researchers use ChatGPT to create text and to facilitate their research, not to write the full text of their paper or manuscript. We know instructors have differing opinions about how or even whether students should use ChatGPT, and we’ll be continuing to collect feedback about instructor and student questions. As always, defer to instructor guidelines when writing student papers. For more about guidelines and policies about student and author use of ChatGPT, see the last section of this post.

Quoting or reproducing the text created by ChatGPT in your paper

If you’ve used ChatGPT or other AI tools in your research, describe how you used the tool in your Method section or in a comparable section of your paper. For literature reviews or other types of essays or response or reaction papers, you might describe how you used the tool in your introduction. In your text, provide the prompt you used and then any portion of the relevant text that was generated in response.

Unfortunately, the results of a ChatGPT “chat” are not retrievable by other readers, and although nonretrievable data or quotations in APA Style papers are usually cited as personal communications , with ChatGPT-generated text there is no person communicating. Quoting ChatGPT’s text from a chat session is therefore more like sharing an algorithm’s output; thus, credit the author of the algorithm with a reference list entry and the corresponding in-text citation.

When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023).

OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat

You may also put the full text of long responses from ChatGPT in an appendix of your paper or in online supplemental materials, so readers have access to the exact text that was generated. It is particularly important to document the exact text created because ChatGPT will generate a unique response in each chat session, even if given the same prompt. If you create appendices or supplemental materials, remember that each should be called out at least once in the body of your APA Style paper.

When given a follow-up prompt of “What is a more accurate representation?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that “different brain regions work together to support various cognitive processes” and “the functional specialization of different regions can change in response to experience and environmental factors” (OpenAI, 2023; see Appendix A for the full transcript).

Creating a reference to ChatGPT or other AI models and software

The in-text citations and references above are adapted from the reference template for software in Section 10.10 of the Publication Manual (American Psychological Association, 2020, Chapter 10). Although here we focus on ChatGPT, because these guidelines are based on the software template, they can be adapted to note the use of other large language models (e.g., Bard), algorithms, and similar software.

The reference and in-text citations for ChatGPT are formatted as follows:

  • Parenthetical citation: (OpenAI, 2023)
  • Narrative citation: OpenAI (2023)

Let’s break that reference down and look at the four elements (author, date, title, and source):

Author: The author of the model is OpenAI.

Date: The date is the year of the version you used. Following the template in Section 10.10, you need to include only the year, not the exact date. The version number provides the specific date information a reader might need.

Title: The name of the model is “ChatGPT,” so that serves as the title and is italicized in your reference, as shown in the template. Although OpenAI labels unique iterations (i.e., ChatGPT-3, ChatGPT-4), they are using “ChatGPT” as the general name of the model, with updates identified with version numbers.

The version number is included after the title in parentheses. The format for the version number in ChatGPT references includes the date because that is how OpenAI is labeling the versions. Different large language models or software might use different version numbering; use the version number in the format the author or publisher provides, which may be a numbering system (e.g., Version 2.0) or other methods.

Bracketed text is used in references for additional descriptions when they are needed to help a reader understand what’s being cited. References for a number of common sources, such as journal articles and books, do not include bracketed descriptions, but things outside of the typical peer-reviewed system often do. In the case of a reference for ChatGPT, provide the descriptor “Large language model” in square brackets. OpenAI describes ChatGPT-4 as a “large multimodal model,” so that description may be provided instead if you are using ChatGPT-4. Later versions and software or models from other companies may need different descriptions, based on how the publishers describe the model. The goal of the bracketed text is to briefly describe the kind of model to your reader.

Source: When the publisher name and the author name are the same, do not repeat the publisher name in the source element of the reference, and move directly to the URL. This is the case for ChatGPT. The URL for ChatGPT is https://chat.openai.com/chat . For other models or products for which you may create a reference, use the URL that links as directly as possible to the source (i.e., the page where you can access the model, not the publisher’s homepage).

Other questions about citing ChatGPT

You may have noticed the confidence with which ChatGPT described the ideas of brain lateralization and how the brain operates, without citing any sources. I asked for a list of sources to support those claims and ChatGPT provided five references—four of which I was able to find online. The fifth does not seem to be a real article; the digital object identifier given for that reference belongs to a different article, and I was not able to find any article with the authors, date, title, and source details that ChatGPT provided. Authors using ChatGPT or similar AI tools for research should consider making this scrutiny of the primary sources a standard process. If the sources are real, accurate, and relevant, it may be better to read those original sources to learn from that research and paraphrase or quote from those articles, as applicable, than to use the model’s interpretation of them.

We’ve also received a number of other questions about ChatGPT. Should students be allowed to use it? What guidelines should instructors create for students using AI? Does using AI-generated text constitute plagiarism? Should authors who use ChatGPT credit ChatGPT or OpenAI in their byline? What are the copyright implications ?

On these questions, researchers, editors, instructors, and others are actively debating and creating parameters and guidelines. Many of you have sent us feedback, and we encourage you to continue to do so in the comments below. We will also study the policies and procedures being established by instructors, publishers, and academic institutions, with a goal of creating guidelines that reflect the many real-world applications of AI-generated text.

For questions about manuscript byline credit, plagiarism, and related ChatGPT and AI topics, the APA Style team is seeking the recommendations of APA Journals editors. APA Style guidelines based on those recommendations will be posted on this blog and on the APA Style site later this year.

Update: APA Journals has published policies on the use of generative AI in scholarly materials .

We, the APA Style team humans, appreciate your patience as we navigate these unique challenges and new ways of thinking about how authors, researchers, and students learn, write, and work with new technologies.

Brandon Pfaadt Joins Trio of Legends in Arizona Diamondbacks History Books

Sam connon | aug 13, 2024.

Aug 12, 2024; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Pfaadt (32) throws against the Colorado Rockies in the first inning at Chase Field.

  • Arizona Diamondbacks
  • Colorado Rockies

Brandon Pfaadt may not have tossed his cleanest gem on Monday, but he still managed to make history in the Arizona Diamondbacks' latest win.

Pfaadt retired the first six Colorado Rockies batters he faced, until Jake Cave doubled and Elías Díaz brought him home in the top of the third. A sacrifice fly and another Díaz RBI single kept the Rockies ahead in the fourth, and a home run by Brendan Rodgers put them on top 4-1 in the sixth.

Manager Torey Lovullo didn't give Pfaadt the hook, though, and he let the righty work his way out of the frame. Pfaadt came back out for the seventh, retiring the side in order.

All the while, Arizona got some momentum on offense by scoring two runs in the sixth and another two in the seventh. That put the Diamondbacks on top 5-4, where the score would remain for the rest of the night.

Pfaadt got credited with the win after Ryan Thompson and Justin Martinez made scoreless appearances out of the bullpen. He wound up allowing four earned runs and eight hits in 7.0 innings, but he struck out 11 and did not walk a single batter.

This marks the second time in 2024 that Pfaadt has recorded 11-plus strikeouts and zero walks in a start, with the first occurance coming against the Seattle Mariners back on April 28. According to Underdog Fantasy's Justin Havens , Pfaadt is now one of four pitchers in Diamondbacks history to record multiple such starts in the same season.

Zac Gallen was the last to do so before Pfaadt. Before them, Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling were the only ones to achieve the feat.

Brandon Pfaadt joins Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling & Zac Gallen as the only pitchers in D-Backs franchise history to record multiple starts with 11+ K and 0 BB in the same season. — nugget chef (@jayhaykid) August 13, 2024

Pfaadt had an up-and-down rookie year in 2023, posting a 5.72 ERA, 1.406 WHIP and -0.4 WAR in the regular season. Across five playoff appearances, however, Pfaadt put up a 3.27 ERA and 1.091 WHIP en route to a National League pennant and World Series appearance.

Through 24 starts this season, Pfaadt is 7-5 with a 3.98 ERA, 1.113 WHIP and 1.4 WAR.

The 25-year-old righty will likely make his next appearance against the Tampa Bay Rays this coming weekend.

Meanwhile, the D-Backs have two games left against the Rockies before they head off to St. Petersburg, Florida. First pitch for game two of Arizona's series against Colorado is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

19 Facts About Tim Walz, Harris’s Pick for Vice President

Mr. Walz, the governor of Minnesota, worked as a high school social studies teacher and football coach, served in the Army National Guard and chooses Diet Mountain Dew over alcohol.

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, in a gray T-shirt and baseball cap, speaks at a Kamala Harris event in St. Paul, Minn., last month.

By Simon J. Levien and Maggie Astor

  • Published Aug. 6, 2024 Updated Aug. 9, 2024

Until recently, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was a virtual unknown outside of the Midwest, even among Democrats. But his stock rose fast in the days after President Biden withdrew from the race, clearing a path for Ms. Harris to replace him and pick Mr. Walz as her No. 2.

Here’s a closer look at the Democrats’ new choice for vice president.

1. He is a (very recent) social media darling . Mr. Walz has enjoyed a groundswell of support online from users commenting on his Midwestern “dad vibes” and appealing ordinariness.

2. He started the whole “weird” thing. It was Mr. Walz who labeled former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, “weird” on cable television just a couple of weeks ago. The description soon became a Democratic talking point.

3. He named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. “I think we can lay to rest that this is the coolest bill signing we’ll ever do,” he said as he put his name on legislation declaring a stretch of Highway 5 the “Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway” after the musician who had lived in Minnesota.

4. He reminds you of your high school history teacher for a reason. Mr. Walz taught high school social studies and geography — first in Alliance, Neb., and then in Mankato, Minn. — before entering politics.

5. He taught in China in 1989 and speaks some Mandarin. He went to China for a year after graduating from college and taught English there through a program affiliated with Harvard University.
