I LOVE getting messy in speech! A mess means we did something hands on and SUPER FUN. What could be more fun then glitter slime to work on following directions, describing, sequencing, and more!

You can find the original recipe HERE ,  but are the materials and recipe for a quicker reference. It is super easy!

-1 Elmer’s Glitter Glue or regular glue ( bit glitter glue is always fun )

-1 Cup Water

-1 tsp. Borax

-1 Tb Water

-A medium sized bowl

Mix 1 tsp. Borax and 1 Cup water together.  You can find the Borax at your local stores in the Laundry section.  Have the student empty the WHOLE bottle of glue into the bowl.  Add the tablespoon of water and mix it together. This helps to make the glue more flexible and easier to work with.  Next, pour the Borax mixture inside of the bowl.  My kids preferred to use the spatula to mix but they can use their hands. The glue will seize up right away turning to slime!  Don’t leave the slime in the water mixture too long since or it can get hard.

You can easily separate the slime into smaller chunks so it’s great for groups.  I recommend getting the little plastic containers, the kind that you get from a restaurant when you ask for more ketchup or salsa, to store the slime in so kids can take it home. You can get these at a store like Walmart, Target, or Meijer.   I found putting little bit of the liquid you mix the glue with in the cup helps to keep everything slimey.

The best part is this doesn’t have to be just a Halloween activity! We called it Monster Slime  but you can easily give it another name and make it work for any holiday or season. Here are some examples:

– Pumpkin Slime ( Fall, Thanksgiving )

– Snowman Slime, Melted Snowman ( Winter )

– Love Goo ( Valentine’s Day )

– Leprechaun Magic ( St. Patrick’s Day )

And let’s face it, anything with a gross name gets kids giggling and interested. Have kids come up some of their own monikers. It will be a fun and slimey time!

Slimy Speech!

Slime making kits are everywhere in stores. My own kids beg to make slime all the time, and the children I see in therapy love my “speech slime days”. Not only is slime a great sensory activity, I have also found tons of ways to incorporate speech and language activities into our sessions using slime. Here are 4 of my favorite speech-language slime activities:

Following Directions

If your child is able to read, have them read the instructors out loud and follow the directions to make the slime. If your child is not yet able to read, you can even draw simple pictures (or use pictures from the box) to help them follow the directions to make the slime.

If you buy pre-made slime, have your child follow 1 or 2-step directions to add items to the slime. Examples: Get the green glitter and add 1 teaspoon of slime. Put half of the slime in the container and give the other half to your brother.

Making slime is also great for measuring/math skills!

Identifying Items

Kids love “hiding” items in the slime. This is a great opportunity to work on identification of items. You can use small toy farm or zoo animals (Put the “cow” in. Put the “zebra” in). I also love to use small toy furniture, small food items, and plastic letters. Dollar stores or dollar sections in stores often have tons of great, cheap items to use.

If you need to increase the difficulty level, have them identify items using a variety of modifiers (i.e. Put the small, pink pig in. Put the big, blue chair in. Put two pigs and one cow in.)

Expressive Language

I usually get great expressive language from kids when they are playing with slime. It is so easy to target a variety of adjectives to describe how the slime feels: slimy, sticky, wet, gross, gooey, mushy, squishy, etc. You can also use adjectives to describe how it looks and smells (add a few drops of juice, flavor packets, or essential oil to add extra smelly fun).

Having your child describe how the slime was made is a great sequencing and retell activity. Use pictures to help them if necessary. They can describe what they did first, next, and last.

Speech/Articulation

To incorporate speech/articulation activities, collect items that have your child’s target sounds. For example, if they are working on “r”, I might have a small car, fork, rainbow eraser, rabbit, jar, robot, bird, ring, rock, dinosaur, or any other “r” item (either the real item or a laminated photo work great). Sometimes, I mix in items that do not have their target sound to see if they can determine which words contain their target sound. After I hide the items in the slime, I ask the kids to find as many “r’ items as possible. Then, we practice saying the words.

Making Slime in Speech Therapy

• 2 bottles of glue (one glitter, one clear)
• 2 1/2 tablespoons of contact soluation
• 1 table spoon of baking soda

Mix it with the spatula, then really knead it like crazy so that it gets less sticky.  You need to have some faith here, because you might just have a panic attack when it's all stuck to your hands.  Just keep kneading.  It gets less sticky as you go, I promise.  This is also the one part of the activity that I did myself… you know, cause kids are crazy and my custodian MIGHT kill me if slime was all over the floor.  Once it wasn't super sticky, we divided it up among the group members (oh, hey math!)

Britain’s Violent Riots: What We Know

Officials had braced for more unrest on Wednesday, but the night’s anti-immigration protests were smaller, with counterprotesters dominating the streets instead.

After days of violent rioting set off by disinformation around a deadly stabbing rampage, the authorities in Britain had been bracing for more unrest on Wednesday. But by nightfall, large-scale anti-immigration demonstrations had not materialized, and only a few arrests had been made nationwide.

Instead, streets in cities across the country were filled with thousands of antiracism protesters, including in Liverpool, where by late evening, the counterdemonstration had taken on an almost celebratory tone.

Over the weekend, the anti-immigration protests, organized by far-right groups, had devolved into violence in more than a dozen towns and cities. And with messages on social media calling for wider protests and counterprotests on Wednesday, the British authorities were on high alert.

With tensions running high, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s cabinet held emergency meetings to discuss what has become the first crisis of his recently elected government. Some 6,000 specialist public-order police officers were mobilized nationwide to respond to any disorder, and the authorities in several cities and towns stepped up patrols.

Wednesday was not trouble-free, however.

In Bristol, the police said there was one arrest after a brick was thrown at a police vehicle and a bottle was thrown. In the southern city of Portsmouth, police officers dispersed a small group of anti-immigration protesters who had blocked a roadway. And in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where there have been at least four nights of unrest, disorder continued, and the police service said it would bring in additional officers.

But overall, many expressed relief that the fears of wide-scale violence had not been realized.

Far-right, anti-immigration riots persist across the U.K. Here's what to know

Over the past few days, the U.K. has been battered by widespread riots led by hundreds of far-right protesters.

The violent rallies began on Tuesday night following a deadly stabbing spree that killed three young girls and wounded several others at a children's dance and yoga class in northwest England.

The attack has triggered Islamophobic and anti-immigration sentiments in the U.K., leading to hundreds of arrests, dozens of officers injured, and multiple buildings damaged — including a mosque and a hotel known to have housed asylum seekers.

The riots entered its sixth day on Sunday and showed no signs of waning. Here's what to know:

What triggered the riots

The riots come after a stabbing rampage on July 29 at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class in Southport, England.

Three girls — Bebe King, 6; Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7; and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9 — were killed and 10 more were injured, including eight children and two adults. Police arrested a 17-year-old male at the scene but initially withheld his name because the suspect was under 18.

That's when false rumors began to spread online, claiming that an asylum-seeker was behind the attack. (The suspect, publicly named by police Thursday as Axel Rudakubana, was born in Wales.)

On Tuesday night, rioters stormed the streets in Southport, targeting a local mosque. In a statement, Southport Mosque said members of its congregation locked themselves inside while individuals hurled petrol bombs and bricks at the building. According to Merseyside Police, 53 officers sustained injuries in clashes with protesters.

Which towns and cities have been affected

Beyond Southport, demonstrations flared up across England, including Manchester, Hartlepool, Liverpool, Bristol and London, as well as Northern Ireland's capital, Belfast, over the following days.

On Sunday, some 700 rioters surrounded a Holiday Inn Express in Rotherham — which is known to house asylum seekers. Windows were broken and a flaming trash bin was thrown at the building, according to South Yorkshire Police.

In Belfast, a cafe, supermarket and several cars were inflamed following protests on Saturday night, The Irish Times reported .

“People attacked this place, racism against Islam and Muslims, especially the Muslim community,” the supermarket manager told the newspaper.

In Whitehall, near the gates of Downing Street, 111 people were arrested on Wednesday night. Five officers were injured by bottles and other objects that were thrown at them, while some were physically attacked, according to the Metropolitan Police Service .

How the U.K. is responding to the protests

On Sunday, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the riots "far-right thuggery," adding that the riots will not be tolerated.

"This is not protest," Starmer said on X . "It is organized, violent, thuggery and it has no place on our streets or online."

Britain's home secretary, Yvette Cooper, said on X that police forces have her full support in handing down "the strongest possible penalties" on rioters, including prison time and travel bans.

Amid the turmoil, there have also been examples of solidarity and generosity across the U.K.

In Southport, where the riots began, Merseyside Police said residents helped clean up the streets and handed out free food a day after the protest.

And over the past week, several landmarks in England — including Downing Street — lit up in a pink hue to show their ongoing support for the families and Southport community after the stabbing attack.

Tim Walz couch joke explained; what he said about JD Vance

Minnesota governor and Democratic VP pick Tim Walz waded into internet meme territory Tuesday with a snappy one-liner about JD Vance.

During the Harris-Walz rally in Philadelphia , Walz delivered a couch-related zinger to Republican VP nominee Vance .

During his speech at the Harris-Walz rally at Temple University in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Walz set up the zinger by telling the crowd that JD Vance doesn't represent the midwesterners Walz grew up with.

"JD studied at Yale, had his career funded by Silicon Valley millionaires, and then wrote a bestseller trashing that community," Walz said. "C'mon; that's not what middle America is."

Then came the zinger.

"And I gotta tell ya; I can't wait to debate this guy," Walz continued, before pausing for dramatic effect. "That's if he's willing to get off the couch and show up.

"See what I did there?"

The joke appeared to be off-script, given the facial reaction of running mate Vice President Kamala Harris, which sent the partisan crowd at the Liacouras Center into a frenzy.

JD Vance couch joke explained

Tim Walz' jab at JD Vance has many levels, and grew out of the false allegations that JD Vance had sex with his couch .

That many respected news outlets ran with it as fact only fueled the joke, which lead to the creation of several JD Vance couch sex-related memes and spawned dozens of related social media accounts.

Social media then amplified the JD Vance couch sex rumor even further by tying it to Vance's book, " Hillbilly Elegy ," a best-selling memoir written by Vance in 2016 and made into a film in 2020 .

Many JD couch-meme creators have identified themselves and seem to enjoy that these memes generated so much traction that well-known publications had to issue corrections and retract stories that stated it as fact that JD Vance had intercourse with his couch.
