One would expect Sivakartikeyan and Anudeep KV to produce a banger as they're both still riding on the highs of Don and Jathi Rathnalu respectively. I went into the cinema with 0 expectations but came out disappointed.
The movie's 1st half was actually quite enjoyable, only to be ruined by a very poor 2nd half. Sivakartikeyan is not at his best but he's somewhat in his element. His character doesn't have any shade at all, so he's in his comedy mode all throughout. Sathyaraj played the father character quite well IMO. The one that really caught me off guard was the heroine. I wouldn't say she was really good, but she succeeded in conveying the emotions her character was supposed to, and she actually had a good chemistry with SK. Impressive from an actress of an entirely different culture and whose 1st language isn't even English. The rest of the characters don't really leave a mark.
The jokes in this movie were mostly a miss for me. Say out of 10 jokes, only 3 or 4 worked. There aren't any serious or emotional moments in the movie, and even though there might have been, they weren't conveyed to the audience well, in the sense that the serious or emotional moments didn't feel like they were serious or emotional at all.
The director's idea is clear, but the presentation of the movie was bad. The screenplay and writing of the movie just falls flat right after the interval, and is topped off with a terrible climax that doesn't give any closure.
The songs and the choreography were all good. No problems here.

A woman dances alone in her apartment to the cheese ’80s classic “It Takes a Muscle to Fall in Love” by Spectral Display. Her son and daughter look at her swaying from behind her, amused as we all are when we catch people with their guards down. Their mother turns around to reveal running mascara and the expressions on the faces of her children change as well. In many ways, this early scene is what Sam de Jong ’s “Prince” is about—posturing and posing that hides something deeper. We are never at our more image-obsessed than in the hazy, horny, love-sick days of our teenage years, and while “Prince” feels a little slight when the credits roll less than 80 minutes after it begins, it’s still a strong, creative addition to the crowded coming-of-age genre.
Our troubled young man this time is named Ayoub (engaging newcomer Ayoub Elasri ). His mother is lonely, looking for love online but mostly failing. His half-sister is his most supportive ally, getting him more than the barely-men with whom he spends most of his time hanging out, looking at the common objects of teenage obsession—cars and girls. Ayoub’s dad is a junkie, seen almost entirely in an abandoned, emptied pool in which he shoots up and basically avoids Ayoub’s attempts at connection. At one point, Ayoub tells him, “ Dad, I’m in love ,” and he just laughs, knowing the trouble such a statement often leads to, and unable to really offer any cogent advice.
Ayoub is in love with a beautiful young woman named Laura (Sigrid ten Napel), who smiles at him and then tells her boyfriend about it. Laura’s boyfriend is one of the older, tougher guys on the other side of the street, and he doesn’t take too kindly to the young punk talking to his girl. Writer/director Sam de Jong crafts parallel groups. Ayoub and his friends are matched across the lot by what they might look like in ten years—another group of dude-bros with more tattoos, muscles, and the beginning of crow’s feet. It’s the same macho bullshit, tinged with more aggression and more failure. And Ayoub wants to nab Laura from its clutches before it’s too late.
At the same time, an even darker predator than Laura’s boyfriend lurks on the fringe of “Prince” in the form of a local gangster named Kalpa (internationally known rapper Freddy Tratlehner). He drives a flashy car and his name is spoken in hushed tones. He’s clearly crazy. Can he teach Ayoub how to stand up for himself? Can he be the father figure this young man so clearly needs but lacks?
The first act of “Prince” is stylish and creative. It is about the teen years of boredom and insecurity as much as anything. These kids who think they’re men hang around in what looks like constant sunshine, doing almost nothing but forming their identities in the process. De Jong and his team often shoot from unique angles, like knee-level, and sometimes even allow the characters to speak directly to the camera. This is the life of a teenager—stylized, exaggerated, but hollow. A synth-heavy score reminiscent of Cliff Martinez’s work on “ Drive ” gives the entire piece a unique flair.
As “Prince” gets more plot-heavy, especially in an emotional final act that the young actors can’t quite handle, it gets a bit less interesting. Some of the decisions made by Ayoub, especially after he realizes his sister has a boyfriend, feel forced. It’s hard to believe given its short running time, but “Prince” actually needed less plot. It’s the way that “Prince” captures those hazy, confused days of teenage life with its own direct style that works, not the manipulative twists of its narrative climax. Luckily, none of the missteps of “Prince” derail the piece entirely. Like the emotional minefields of adolescence, the characters quickly move on to the next beat, and when they walk into the future in the final scenes, I was surprised how much I enjoyed my time with Ayoub and his buddies. I wondered where life would take them from here. And that’s the sign of a good coming-of-age film—it captures how this phase is not an ending but just a new beginning.

Andhagan movie review: prashanth’s film tries desperately to match andhadhun, which was a smartly crafted black comedy thriller, and falls short..
When Hindi film Andhadhun (The Blind Man) came out in 2018, it was hailed for its intricate screenplay and inspiring performances of Ayushman Khurana, Tabu and Radhika Apte. Tamil actor Prashanth’s father, actor-producer-director Thiagarajan bought the remake rights and had made it as Andhagan. While the movie was complete in 2022, it has taken two years for it to hit theatres. (Also Read: Santhosh Narayanan distances himself from Prashanth’s The Andhagan Anthem: ‘Audio label is also playing blind’ )
Prashanth essays the role of Krish, a blind piano player, in Andhagan. He lives alone with his cat and plays at a resto bar in the evenings to make his living. It is here that he meets Julie (Priya Anand) and the two become close. Yesteryear actor Karthick (who essays a similar role) is an also a frequent visitor to the bar and he falls in love with Krish’s music. Karthick invites Krish to his place for a private concert for his wedding anniversary to surprise his wife Simi (Simran). Landing up at the actor’s place, Krish finds he is not home and he receives a shock instead. There is a murder that is committed and Krish turns witness. What happens next?
Andhagan is a faithful remake of Andhadhun and director Thiagarajan has followed the script to a T. But having enjoyed the original Hindi film and the performances, the Tamil remake definitely falls short in numerous aspects including the casting and music.
Andhagan was a comeback vehicle for actor Prashanth who has not been seen in Tamil cinema for six years now. The 51-year-old actor who had some good films in his career, like Shankar’s Jeans, hasn’t had any big hits to speak of in the last two decades. In Andhagan, the actor looks jaded and not fresh and youthful which is imperative for the character of a charming piano player. This role was perhaps not what he should have chosen for a comeback though the movie has a good script.
Simran , on the other hand, is perfect as Simi, which was essayed by Tabu in the Hindi version. Priya Anand too is decent as Julie and numerous other characters, like Urvashi, Yogi Babu, Manobala, Leela Samson and Vanitha Vijayakumar, have been thrown to add weight and comic value to the film but this doesn’t do much for it. Yesteryear Tamil star Karthick is a misfit as Simi’s husband and moreover, his dubbing doesn’t match what he’s mouthing on screen which is very distracting. Again, Samuthirakani steps in as a cop - for the umpteenth time in Tamil cinema - and obviously it’s a cakewalk for him.
Music director Santhosh Narayanan is known for his spectacular songs and BGM but in Andhagan the songs are just terrible. Krish is a talented musician and plays at a bar for his livelihood but the songs he sings are tacky to say the least. This was quite unexpected from this talented music director who just gave us the massive Kalki 2898 AD .
Thiagarajan had to turn director for Andhagan after two directors walked out of the project. Having had a template already, it would have been easy to helm this film but Andhagan hasn’t been made exciting for the audience. The Tamil narrative is flat and the twists that come don’t pop on screen but play out very matter-of-fact for the audience. Had the director taken the script and made some changes to make it more engaging in Tamil it would have helped. The dialogues by Pattukotai Prabhakar also don’t evoke any emotions in the audience as they watch Krish’s character go through an emotional roller coaster from happiness to shock to fear.
Andhadhun was a smartly crafted black comedy thriller by Sriram Raghavan that kept you guessing and on the edge of your seat. Prashanth’s Andhagan tries desperately to match the original but falls short.
