Democrats are quickly rallying around Vice President Kamala Harris as their likely presidential nominee after President Joe Bidenā€™s ground-shaking decision to bow out of the 2024 race.

The announcement that Vice President Kamala Harris will seek the Democratic nomination for president is inspiring a wave of false claims about her eligibility and her background. Some first emerged years ago, while others only surfaced after President Joe Bidenā€™s decision to end his bid for a second term.

Hereā€™s a look at the facts.

CLAIM: Harris is not an American citizen and therefore cannot serve as commander in chief.

THE FACTS: Completely false . Harris is a natural born U.S. citizen. She was born on Oct. 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, according to a copy of her birth certificate, obtained by The Associated Press.

Her mother, a cancer researcher from India, and her father, an economist from Jamaica, met as graduate students at the University of California, Berkeley.

Under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, anyone born on U.S. soil is considered a natural born U.S. citizen and eligible to serve as either the vice president or president.

ā€œAll persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside,ā€ reads the amendment.

There is no question or legitimate debate about whether a citizen like Harris is eligible to serve as president or vice president, said Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School.

ā€œSo many legal questions are really nuanced ā€” this isnā€™t one of those situations,ā€ Levinson told the AP on Monday.

Still, social media posts making the debunked assertion that Harris cannot serve as president went viral soon after Biden announced Sunday that he was dropping out of the race and would back Harris for president.

ā€œKamala Harris is not eligible to run for President,ā€ read one post on X that was liked more than 34,000 times. ā€œNeither of her parents were natural born American citizens when she was born.ā€

False assertions about Harrisā€™ eligibility began circulating in 2019 when she launched her bid for the presidency. They got a boost, thanks in part to then-President Donald Trump, when Biden selected her as his running mate.

ā€œI heard today that she doesnā€™t meet the requirements,ā€ the Republican said of Harris in 2019.

CLAIM: Harris is not Black.

THE FACTS: This is false. Harris is Black and Indian . Her father, Donald Harris, is a Black man who was born in Jamaica. Shyamala Gopalan, her mother, was born in southern India. Harris has spoken publicly for many years, including in her 2019 autobiography , about how she identifies with the heritage of both her parents.

Despite ample evidence to the contrary, social media users are making erroneous claims about Harrisā€™ race.

ā€œJust a reminder that Kamala Harris @KamalaHarris isnā€™t black,ā€ reads one X post that had received approximately 42,000 likes and 20,400 shares as of Monday. ā€œShe Indian American. She pretends to be black as part of the delusional, Democrat DEI quota.ā€

But Harris is both Black and Indian. Indeed, she is the first woman, Black person and person of South Asian descent to serve as vice president. This fact is highlighted in her biography on WhiteHouse.gov and she has spoken about her ethnicity on many occasions.

Harris wrote in her autobiography, ā€œThe Truths We Hold: An American Journey,ā€ that she identifies with the heritage of both her mother and father.

ā€œMy mother, grandparents, aunts, and uncle instilled us with pride in our South Asian roots,ā€ she wrote. ā€œOur classical Indian names harked back to our heritage, and we were raised with a strong awareness and appreciation for Indian culture.ā€

In the next paragraph, she adds, ā€œMy mother understood very well that she was raising two black daughters.ā€ Harris again refers to herself as a ā€œblack womanā€ in the bookā€™s next chapter.

CLAIM: Harris got her start by having an affair with a married man, California politician Willie Brown.

THE FACTS: This is missing some important context. Brown was separated from his wife during the relationship, which was not a secret.

Brown, 90, is a former mayor of San Francisco who was serving as speaker of the California State Assembly in the 1990s when he and Harris were in a relationship. Brown had separated from his wife in 1982.

ā€œYes, we dated. It was more than 20 years ago,ā€ Brown wrote in 2020 in the San Francisco Chronicle under the article title, ā€œSure, I dated Kamala Harris. So what?ā€

He wrote that he supported Harrisā€™ first race to be San Francisco district attorney ā€” just as he has supported a long list of other California politicians, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Harris, 59, was state attorney general from 2011-2017 and served in the Senate from 2017 until 2021, when she became vice president. She has been married to Doug Emhoff since 2014.

Harrisā€™ critics have used the past relationship to question her qualifications, as Fox News personality Tomi Lahren did when she wrote on social media in 2019: ā€œKamala did you fight for ideals or did you sleep your way to the top with Willie Brown.ā€ Lahren later apologized for the comment.

Trump and some of his supporters have also highlighted the nearly three-decade old relationship in recent attacks on Harris .

CLAIM: An Inside Edition clip of television host Montel Williams holding hands with Harris and another woman is proof that Harris was his ā€œside piece.ā€

THE FACTS: The clip shows Montel with Harris and his daughter, Ashley Williams. Harris and Williams, a former marine who hosted ā€œThe Montel Williams Showā€ for more than a decade, dated briefly in the early 2000s.

In the clip, taken from a 2019 Inside Edition segment , Williams can be seen posing for photographs and holding hands with both women as they arrive at the 2001 Eighth Annual Race to Erase MS in Los Angeles.

But social media users are misrepresenting the clip, using it as alleged evidence that Harris was Montelā€™s ā€œside pieceā€ ā€” a term used to describe a person, typically a woman, who has a sexual relationship with a man in a monogamous relationship.

Williams addressed the false claims in an X post on Monday, writing in reference to the Inside Edition clip, ā€œas most of you know, that is my daughter to my right.ā€ Getty Images photos from the Los Angeles gala identify the women as Harris and Ashley Williams.

In 2019, Williams described his relationship with Harris in a post on X, then known as Twitter.

ā€œ@KamalaHarris and I briefly dated about 20 years ago when we were both single,ā€ he wrote in an X post at the time. ā€œSo what? I have great respect for Sen. Harris. I have to wonder if the same stories about her dating history would have been written if she were a male candidate?ā€

CLAIM: Harris promised to inflict the ā€œvengeance of a nationā€ on Trump supporters.

THE FACTS: A fabricated quote attributed to Harris is spreading online five years after it first surfaced.

In the quote, Harris supposedly promises that if Trump is defeated in 2020, Trump supporters will be targeted by the federal government: ā€œOnce Trumpā€™s gone and we have regained our rightful place in the White House, look out if you supported him and endorsed his actions, because weā€™ll be coming for you next. You will feel the vengeance of a nation.ā€

The quote was shared again on social media this week. One post on X containing an image of the quote was shared more than 22,000 times as of Monday afternoon.

The remarks didnā€™t come from Harris , but from a satirical article published online in August 2019. Shortly after, Trump supporters like musician Ted Nugent reposted the comments without noting they were fake.

CLAIM: A video shows Harris saying in a speech: ā€œToday is today. And yesterday was today yesterday. Tomorrow will be today tomorrow. So live today, so the future today will be as the past today as it is tomorrow.ā€

THE FACTS: Harris never said this. Footage from a 2023 rally on reproductive rights at Howard University, her alma mater, was altered to make it seem as though she did.

In the days after Harris headlined the Washington rally, Republicans mocked a real clip of her speech, with one critic dubbing her remarks a ā€œword salad,ā€ the AP reported at the time .

Harris says in the clip: ā€œSo I think itā€™s very important ā€” as you have heard from so many incredible leaders ā€” for us, at every moment in time, and certainly this one, to see the moment in time in which we exist and are present, and to be able to contextualize it, to understand where we exist in the history and in the moment as it relates not only to the past, but the future.ā€

NARAL Pro-Choice America, an abortion rights nonprofit whose president also spoke at the rally, livestreamed the original footage. It shows Harris making the ā€œmoment in timeā€ remark, but not the ā€œtoday is todayā€ comment.

The White Houseā€™s transcript of Harrisā€™ remarks also does not include the statement from the altered video. Harrisā€™ appearance at the event came the same day that Biden announced their reelection bid .

One scene featuring drag artists in the ceremony was being viewed on social media as an interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper that some found offensive, including Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini who branded it insulting and "sleazy".

Paris 2024 artistic director Thomas Jolly was perplexed by the negative reactions to the show that turned bridges into settings for artistic performances.

"Our idea was inclusion," Mr Jolly said.

"Naturally when we want to include everyone and not exclude anyone questions are raised.

"Our subject was not to be subversive. We never wanted to be subversive.

"We wanted to talk about diversity. Diversity means being together. We wanted to include everybody.

"In France, we have artistic freedom. We are lucky in France to live in a free country."

A music set by Barbara Butch - a DJ organisers described as an "LGBT icon" - played in a diversity section of the ceremony.

Gleason reflected on the moment he was diagnosed with the crippling disease by Robert Miller on January 5, 2011d. "He told me that I had three to five years to live," Gleason said. "My temple. The body that carried me to the highest level of competitive athletics would wither and die in the next few years. While I was powerless to change the diagnosis. The one thing that I seemed to control was my attitude. My mindset."Ā Ā 

After Gleason's words, Mackie responded, "He's still here."

Anyone fighting sickness, disease, or cancer will tell you that the first step to fighting for your life begins with your attitude. It's been a part of my testimony as a cancer survivor, as well as many others.

It's been ten years since Steve Gleason's diagnosis. It's also been ten years of a wife, family, friends, and fans observing one man's sheer will and determination to still make a difference in our world. Gleason's gratitude and appreciation for his family and life ā€” as his body deteriorates ā€” is a courageous testament to a man well admired worldwide.

Steve Gleason is a champion. No matter his state, his perseverance and courage to keep battling while supporting others with their challenges are remarkable. Team Gleason, Steve' and wife Michel's foundation, has "provided over $40 million in adventure, technology, equipment, and care services to people living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and countless others through advocacy, support and ultimately bringing an end to the disease."Ā  Ā

Shortly after my mother passed away from Alzheimer's disease in 2010, the Gleason's sent a check for the New Orleans Alzheimer's Walk for my advocacy group of walkers. It's the personal touch of the Gleason family that is so inspiring.Ā Ā 

I will never forget.Ā Ā Most of all, many will never forget the Steve Gleason's life after football and what it meant for him to never give up hope and love for others.

Here's a transcript of Steve Gleason's speech as he accepted the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage from his beloved friend Drew Brees, with his son Rivers standing by his side.

"Thanks, Drew. I love you. Hi there, everyone. Hi, Gray and mama, and thanks for your help, Rivers. This award, the Arthur Ashe award for courage, is a sublime honor for me, and I always love the opportunity to wear my tuxedo. Arthur Ashe exemplified courage as living with an open heart of humility, kindness, and generosity, which united humanity. So to receive this award is amazing. When I learned I was receiving this award, I started reflecting on what that word, courage, means.

To be courageous, we must first experience loneliness, unworthiness, or any of the faces of fear. I was told I would have 3 years to live when I was diagnosed with ALS in 2011, so I've got the wilderness of fear tattooed all over me. For me, this honor represents some encouragement and triumph for the families currently living with ALS, all the people living with disabilities or other illnesses, and all of you who experience fear or suffering. I suppose if you have never experienced fear, isolation, or suffering, you can roll your sanctified ass right out of here. The truth is new human is immune from fear or adversity, not even super athletes, royal princes, or the most holy saints. Considering this truth of our humanity, it's vital that we all individually and collectively discover ways to be courageous and love the life we have. My view is that the fears and adversities we encounter are our opportunity to accept what is and explore what is on the other side of fear to grow stronger, better, and have peace of mind. From this perspective, resiliently moving through the adversities life brings us is our purpose in being human.

It's clear to me that our ability to courageously share our vulnerabilities with each other is our greatest strength. By doing this, we're able to understand the issue, compassionately collaborate with each other to solve problems, and overcome fear. Without the understanding and compassionate support from my family, community, and caregivers, I'd have been dead years ago. Through this lens, you can see we're all in this together. We are all citizens of the world. Given our interconnectedness, the greatest aspect of our purpose is to generously help, serve, and love others. Do we have the courage to unconditionally love our neighbors, our so called enemies, and love ourselves? I don't think anyone will disagree that we face enormous challenges in the 21st century. If we can courageously share our fears and limitations with each other and compassionately collaborate to solve problems, our human potential is boundless.

If we can listen, understand, and help alleviate each other's suffering, then truly, all things are possible. Thank you again for this incredible honor. I love y'all."

Kamala Harris Was Never Bidenā€™s ā€˜Border Czar.ā€™ Hereā€™s What She Really Did

O n her first foreign trip as Vice President in June 2021, Kamala Harris was tasked with delivering a blunt message in Guatemala City. "I want to be clear to folks in this region who are thinking about making that dangerous trek to the United States-Mexico border: Do not come," she said at a press conference, pausing for effect. "Do not come."

Three years later, that sound bite may come to haunt Harris' nascent presidential campaign. Despite her warning, border crossings reached historic highs during the Biden Administration. Republican critics cast the episode as a symbol of Harrisā€™s ineffective tenure as President Biden's "border czar," a misleading label they applied after she was charged with helming diplomatic efforts to address the root causes of migration from Central America to the U.S. 

ā€œKamala had one job,ā€ Nikki Haley told the crowd at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last week. ā€œOne job. And that was to fix the border. Now imagine her in charge of the entire country.ā€

In fact, Harris was never put in charge of the border or immigration policy. Nor was she involved in overseeing law-enforcement efforts or guiding the federal response to the crisis . Her mandate was much narrower: to focus on examining and improving the underlying conditions in the Northern Triangle of Central Americaā€”El Salvador, Guatemala, and Hondurasā€”which has been racked by decades of poverty, war, chronic violence, and political instability. The strategy relied on allocating billions for economic programs and stimulating private-sector investment in the region in hopes that these programs would ultimately lead fewer migrants to make the dangerous journey north.

It was the first high-profile assignment in Harris' tenure as Vice President, and it was an especially thankless one. At best, addressing the ā€œpush factorsā€ that spur migration would lead to incremental improvements and take a generation to yield results. At worst, it would make Harris the face of the border crisis, one of the Biden administration's biggest political vulnerabilities. "To the extent that this was a useful assignment, she did reasonably well in getting the private sector to invest in Central America," says Muzaffar Chishti, a senior fellow at the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute. "But it was an assignment that could not produce results anytime soon."

The so-called "root causes strategy" focused on improving economic and security conditions by creating jobs, combating corruption, improving human and labor rights, and reducing violence. Harris allocated funds for humanitarian relief from natural disasters, and directed more than 10 million COVID-19 vaccines to the Northern Triangle countries. She held bilateral meetings with the region's leaders, as well as meetings with NGOs, business executives and human rights advocates. She worked with the U.S. Justice Department to launch an Anti-Corruption task force focused on prosecuting corruption cases with ties to the region, as well as Anti-Migrant Smuggling task forces in Mexico and Guatemala.

Most importantly, Harris spearheaded a public-private partnership that, as of March 2024, had secured commitments from major U.S. and multi-national companies to invest more than $5 billion in the region. The Vice President "put her name on the line with very serious senior CEOs and kind of created a brand appeal for Central America that didn't exist," says Ricardo ZĆŗniga, who until recently served as the U.S. special envoy to Central America. 

Harris also spent time in Washington communicating with regional leaders. One tangible result, according to two former U.S. officials, was that it gave the U.S. the standing and relationships to help prevent Guatemalan prosecutors from overturning the results of last yearā€™s presidential election, which was won by anti-corruption outsider Bernardo ArĆ©valo. While delayed, the ultimately peaceful transition of power avoided the political instability that Biden Administration officials feared could cause a spike in migration. The U.S. applied public pressure through sanctions and visa restrictions on officials they accused of undermining the democratic process, as well as behind the scenes. Harris's team was directly involved, especially her national security adviser Philip Gordon, who traveled to the region to push for a peaceful democratic transfer of power, according to the two former U.S. officials.

But the narrow mandate given to Harris ignored shifting migration patterns, experts say. The slow process of addressing the "push factors," or reasons that migrants leave their countries, says Chisthi, can't compete with the "pull factors"ā€”the economic and safety incentives that draw people to the U.S. When Biden assumed office, officials thought Central America would continue to be the epicenter of migration pressure. "We were wrong," says Zuniga. After the initial surge, migration from the Northern Triangle largely stabilized. By December 2023, 54% of encounters at the southern border involved citizens of countries other than Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.

Much of Harrisā€™s work failed to break through back home. Instead, she became the target of Republican broadsides about the border crisis and was repeatedly criticized for not visiting the U.S.-Mexico border. "She's dealing with a narrative problem," says Zuniga. With immigration topping the list of Americansā€™ concerns, according to recent Gallup polls , an ongoing humanitarian crisis at the border, and political deadlock on immigration reform and funding, Harris emerged as the most visible scapegoat.

As they shift their focus from Biden to Harris, itā€™s clear that Republicans plan to attack Harrisā€™s role on immigration issues. "The border crisis is a Kamala Harris crisis,ā€ former President Trump's running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, declared at a July 22 rally. A recent National Republican Senatorial Committee memo outlining talking points calls her "the architect of [Biden's] biggest failure." In a post on Truth Social on July 23, Trump said her "incompetence gave us the WORST and MOST DANGEROUS Border anywhere in the World." Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, said if Harris is elected, he will "need to triple the border wall, razor wire barriers and National Guard on the border.ā€ 

Harris has a broader record on immigration, including backing a bipartisan border-security deal aimed at reducing border crossings earlier this year. As a Senator, she was an outspoken advocate of legal protections for DACA recipients, made headlines for aggressively questioning Trump immigration officials, and derided the then-President's border wall as a "medieval vanity project.ā€ But itā€™s clear the ā€œborder czarā€ label has become a political liability. 

Some Harris allies have expressed frustration with Biden for putting her in this position. In doing so, he was repeating a familiar patternā€”it was a portfolio Biden himself was given as Vice President. In 2014, when a surge in children and families from Central America overwhelmed the U.S. immigration system, then-President Barack Obama tasked him with leading the international response to the crisis. "The solution to this problem is to address the root causes of this immigration in the first place," Biden said on a trip to Guatemala City that summer. "Especially poverty, insecurity and the lack of the rule of law.ā€

Seven years later, little had changed when Harris gave the same speech, in the same place. Politically, "the problem is that no one cares about the root causes," says Chisthi. "It's too abstract. And frankly, very little can be done about them in the short run, while the public is focused on what is happening with the border today."

Residents at the Belmont Village Senior Living community in Hollywood Hills rose to the challenge of taking part in a mock Olympics to coincide with the Olympic Summer Games in Paris.

My thoughts for you to remember during your last season

Dear Daughter,

You think that this letter would make more sense coming after the last game of your last season, but you know I never do anything that makes perfect sense.

Today I will watch you take the field for the first time of your last soccer season. It takes me back so many years, so many games. I have watched you play with a soccer ball since before you could walk, it was in your blood. I watched you play your first game, with your dad and poppy on the sidelines as coaches. I was there when you made your first goal and when you had to make the tough decision to focus solely on soccer and move away from all the other sports.

My years as a soccer mom are coming to a close. All the shirts and tote bags will begin to collect dust in the back of a closet. But the memories I will cherish forever. I wonā€™t remember the dinners I missed with friends, the meetings I skipped, the plans I had to cancel because my daughter had soccer. I remember the smiles from you, the love you exuded on and off the field.

This last season, I donā€™t want you to cry over the last, but to rejoice in the years. The success soccer has brought to your life. The friendships that will last a lifetime, the hard work you have but in. Be thankful for the lessons in humility during victory and the grace in defeat.

The end of an end, but the beginning of a new!

This season play harder then ever before. Hug your teammates like no one is watching. Shed tears for victories and laugh at the loses. Think of past seasons, years that seem so long ago. Remember the time when soccer was your life and you loved every moment of it.  Bring back the giddy feeling you had before every game and feel it again. Love the sport more then you ever have!

This letter has been all over the place; much like my mind is this year. One day you will understand as you are in my shoes. And when you are, you will look back and be grateful for all these tears we shed during this time. And remember, a tiny moment in your life means the world in mine, and I donā€™t want to let go of this feeling!

Take away from this letter and this season that I am proud of you. I am proud of the person you are. I say it all the time, and I know I sound like a broken record, but itā€™s something I need you to always remember. Soccer is a part of you, but itā€™s not who you are. Soccer has built the character you are, but itā€™s not your definition. Take pride in the athlete you are, the memories you have and be proud of the years and hard work you put in. I am, and I couldnā€™t be prouder of you. I will always wear my ā€œsoccer momā€ tee proudly and remember the years we had together at a sport my child was amazing at. So, until the next letter during this memorable senior yearā€¦

Iā€™m so very proud of you, and so are all ā€œyour peopleā€!

As I was making my checklist for my son’s senior night I thought Iā€™d make a checklist for myself and I thought I would share it with you and some tips for planning a memorable senior night. Not all Senior Recognitions have to be for sports. Most are typically but every senior deserves a night of recognition. My youngest daughter’s Senior Recognition was after her last time acting with our youth group at church.Ā  Be creative!

Senior Recognition night is usually pretty simple. I’m going to use my son’s senior basketball recognition night as an example here. Feel free to use this idea for any type of senior recognition. The end-of-season banquet, however, is where itā€™s a little more complicated, but that’s another post.Ā 

Tips For Planning A Senior Recognition

Planning the recognition night is pretty straightforward. Ā Usually, you choose a game near the end of the season. Or a game near the end of the season that you know you will most likely win. Ā It’s not a lot of fun to lose on senior night. Work with your Athletic Director and coaches (and board if you have one) to pick the best night. It helps if it’s a night when both the girl’s and the boy’s teams are both at home. This way you recognize both at the same time.

Consider getting a small team of parents together to help so that you are not doing everything.Ā  This could be senior or junior parents, cheerleaders, board members, etc.Ā  Divide out the duties of ordering the cake, getting a photographer, choosing an announcer/MC, programs, etc.Ā  Don’t forget to ask the seniors what they would like included and their parents.

Next, you need to get some biography information from the seniors and their parents. You can include this information in any programs that you have designed.Ā  I suggest sending out a Senior Questionnaire. Those include questions like how long they’ve played for your team, hobbies, where they plan on going to college, favorite scripture, etc.Ā  This is optional. If you have an MC/announcer, this gives them some great information about each senior.

If the girl’s and boys’ teams are playing, I suggest doing the recognition between games.Ā  This way you will have the most people there to see the recognition and it gives a nice break between games.Ā  Ā It can be as simple or as formal as you like. It’s as easy as having the parents and players line up together and the MC announces each player. Then, as their child’s name is called parents and their senior would take center court. Itā€™s that simple.

Decor Ideas

Don’t forget to make a fun and memorable night of it!Ā  You can decorate the gym, have a cake for the teams, or even get the cheerleaders involved.Ā  Itā€™s up to you!Ā  We had a small senior display done by each senior or their parents that showcased pictures, schoolwork, awards, etc.Ā  Some years we had special buttons made for the parents to wear. They had their senior’s number on them or t-shirts with their numbers.Ā  We’ve even done face painting for anyone wanting to come and cheer that senior on.Ā  Just make the night fun and all about the seniors!

We use balloon bouquets that are about 6 ft tall with 3-5 balloons each. They’re placed on the court where we want the players and their parents to stand after moving from center court during the recognition.Ā  These serve a couple of purposes: first, they let the players and parents know where to stand after they have been recognized. Bonus! They help to decorate the gym.Ā  And serve as a nice backdrop for parent/senior pictures.Ā  Balloons are an inexpensive way to decorate and they can be taken home by the players.

Coaches Gifts and Programs

Our coaches give each senior some type of special keepsake as they are presented.Ā  Most of the time it would be a signed ball by all the coaches and players of that team.Ā  Note that some coaches prefer to save this for the end-of-season banquet.Ā  I’ve even seen seniors give their parents a small bouquet.

We’ve even done special game programs that focused on the seniors which make great keepsakes.Ā  These can be printed on a home computer or at a local printer.Ā  We typically include individual pictures of each senior with a short biography. Plus we include team photos of each of our teams.Ā  You can even get sponsors and showcase them in the program to offset the cost of printing.

Senior Night Ideas: Planning a Memorable Senior Night (2024)

Senior Night is a memorable and meaningful  senior tradition  for high school athletes and their families. It celebrates the culmination of years of hard work and commitment, and recognizes each senior’s contribution to the team and program, celebrates their athletic achievements, and acknowledges the support of their family and friends.

Senior Night is usually held at the final home game, meet or match of the season. Players are announced individually and enter the stadium, or walk onto the field or court, escorted by their family.

The size and scope of Senior Night varies, and is probably determined by the size of the team and the budget for the event. But even with limited resources, you can plan a memorable event to celebrate Senior Night for your graduating seniors!

Senior Night Set-Up

Announcer and sound system.

Once you know the date of Senior Night for your team, make sure you schedule an announcer and the photographer right away. Hopefully you can find parent or student volunteers for these two important jobs.

If you don’t have a regular announcer for your team, ask the Athletic Director, Principal or an underclassmen team parent to take on the role for Senior Night. And, if you don’t usually have a microphone and speaker or sound system at your games or matches, ask how to secure one for Senior Night.

Photographer and Location for Photos

Make sure you have a perfect location and backdrop picked out for Senior Night photos. For some sports, like football or soccer, the field and stadium offer a great backdrop for pictures on their own.

Decorations

If you’re looking for decoration ideas for Senior Night that go beyond posters and banners (see below for tons of info on posters, banners, giant head cutouts and photo collages), there are tons of ways to decorate for Senior Night.

  • Helium balloon bouquets, columns and balloon arches in school colors can be used to line the entryway into the gym or on the sideline of the field. Or you can simply tie balloons to the sideline bench or chairs.
  • If your Senior Night is outside at the school stadium, there’s probably a fence between the stands and field that is begging to be decorated. Use  colored solo cups  or  Put-In Cups  to spell out “Seniors” or “Seniors 2024”.
  • Decorate the entrance to the parking lot or school with  senior night yard signs  that say “Welcome to Senior Night” and/or feature each player.
  • Decorate the locker room with streamers, signs and balloons.  Paper star garlands  in school colors are inexpensive and go a LONG way when you're decorating. Or snag an  inexpensive sports-themed decoration kit like this one  from Amazon.

Get the School Community Involved

Get the cheerleaders involved even if they don’t usually cheer at your games. They can help you hype up the event and cheer each athlete onto the field or into the gym when their name is announced.

Ask the school choral program if they would consider singing the National Anthem for your game on Senior Night. The more of the school you can get involved, the more special Senior Night will be!

Senior Night Player Introductions

The introduction of the senior players can range from a short and simple introduction to a more detailed recap of their time on the team. The number of seniors on the team should guide the amount of time given to honoring each player.

Decide on a format for the introductions and stick to it for each player. For instance, their name, position and number of years on the team. Then acknowledge their escorts and share their plans for after graduation. If it’s early in the school year and specific plans aren’t yet known, you can ask them to share something about senior year they’re looking forward to.

Resist the urge to focus on awards and accolades. While it’s likely that some of the seniors have had a significantly bigger impact on the team than others, Senior Night should aim to honor all of the seniors equally. Awards and external achievements and accolades are better suited for the end-of-season sports banquet.

The introduction of each athlete is their big moment! There are several fun ways to highlight the entrance of the athletes as they’re introduced:

  • In the gym, turn off the lights and use a spotlight to introduce the seniors
  • Set up a colorful balloon arch at the entry to the field or gym.
  • If Senior Night is inside, hang a  colorful foil fringe curtain in the doorway  that the seniors walk through to enter the gym.
  • Roll out the  red carpet  for your seniors! For under $20, you can order one that's 2' x 15' and great for parties and events.

Senior Night Flowers, Recognition and Gifts

It’s traditional for the senior players to receive a small bouquet of flowers on senior night as they walk on to the field or court. Many schools also honor the family members with corsages and/or boutonnieres. Your local florist should be able to provide Senior Night flowers with tissue and ribbons in school colors. For a unique corsage idea, see "Ball Roses" below.

Parents, friends and family often wear buttons with their seniors photo on them.  Zazzle.com  has a great selection of custom buttons and offers several sports designs like the ones shown here.

Senior Night Programs

Even if you don't usually have game programs for your sport, Senior Night is the one time it might make sense.

If you have a large team and the player introductions are limited, you can use a Senior Night program to share more information about each player, their contributions to the team and their future plans. Create a simple Senior Night Program with one of our   available in our  .

Photo Collages

Commemorate a high school athletic career with a custom photo collage. Photo collages could easily fall under Senior Night Posters and Banners too, since they're great for both recognition and as a gift!

Depending on the sport, sashes are also popular for Senior Night.  There are a couple of generic options available on Amazon like this . Or, for custom sashes try vendors like and on Etsy.

An alternative to sashes are ribbon leis. Different colors of ribbons, usually including one representing your sport like the wrestling one shown, are woven together to create a lei. Senior Crowns

Senior crowns are gaining popularity and are perfect for Senior Night! Have the underclassmen on the team decorate a cardboard crown for each senior. Grab a handful of crowns from Burger King and turn them inside out, or order  white card stock crowns in bulk from Amazon.com . Senior Posters and Banners

Banners and posters are a must for Senior Night! Options range from DIY posters created by friends and family, to large professionally designed graphic banners for each senior athlete. And don’t forget the GIANT head cutouts and fan faces that are popular for fans to bring to Senior Night. Below are some of my favorite options for Senior Night banners, posters and signs.

Senior Night Posters

For reasonably-priced sports theme photo collage posters, check out  Zazzle.com . Their designs are simple, but you can easily upload your photos, customize the text and even change the background color. There are several sports available including football, soccer, volleyball, hockey, baseball, tennis and lacrosse, with tons of sizes up to 24” x 36”.

There are several options for senior night banners, but they can get very expensive, sometimes as much as hundreds of dollars.

Celebrating After the Game

Hopefully, your team wins their game on Senior Night and the players and families are ready to continue the celebration. 

Consider a short (30-60 minutes) after-party with a cake and refreshments, where the seniors, their families and the rest of the team can connect and celebrate each other on a more personal level. 

At my daughter’s senior night after-party for volleyball, the underclassmen presented the seniors with scrapbooks full of photos, memories and notes from their years on the team. The girls laughed and cried, pouring over the memories they had created playing together, and it was a great way to wrap up their Senior Night.

An Open Letter To Every Athlete On Their Senior Night

Dear Seniors,

For many of you, today was a day that you had always wished would come sooner, only to find that when the day arrived wishing for it to come was the last thing you truly ever wanted.

When stepping out onto the court or field or rink for the very last time today, take a moment to stand quietly and look out into the crowd, look to your teammates, to your coaches, and to your fellow seniors, and remember the way this made you feel, as this is a feeling you will remember for the rest of your life.

Today and every day moving forward will be filled with memories that will last you a lifetime.

Today is a day bound to be filled with endless amounts of tears, both happy and sad, so let it be. Let these feelings consume you, and serve as a reminder that no matter where you may go in life from this very moment, that you have made a family of your own. That you have changed the lives of others by just simply being in theirs.

That all the little things were really the big things, like the nicknames you had for your teammates, or your favorite song to sing in the locker room before a game. These things that never seemed to mean anything at the time are all the things that you will carry with you when you leave this place you call your home away from home.

On this day, years from now you will not remember the wins and losses of each season, but the people that took this journey with you and never let you look back.

The teammates that picked you up and carried you through the good and the bad of each day. The ones that taught you to see the good in all things. The ones who never let you live down the stupid things you did, mainly because they did them with you. And even the ones that you couldn't stand 99.9% percent of the time.

You will remember the coaches that pushed you and never let you give up.

You will remember all the times they yelled and made you run until you couldn't walk. The times that they depended on you to be the leaders we all knew you could be. But more than any of that, you will remember the opportunity they gave you to play the game you learned to love, the game that changed your life, the game that taught you more lessons about life, love and dedication than anything ever could.

On this day I ask you to remember a few things. I ask that you remember that the impact you have had on your teammates' lives is unmeasurable, never doubt that. The time you have spent dedicated to this sport that you love was never, EVER a waste of your time, because you are a better person because of it.

I ask you to remember that although the sadness you may hold in your heart overwhelms you, that you have found a part of you along this journey that will help you follow your dreams, whatever they may be.

Play your heart out today, and leave knowing you've given it all you've got just one last time. Leave knowing that you are one of the lucky ones. Remember the love, remember the defeat, remember the laughs and the tears, remember the battle wounds. Remember this feeling, always and forever.

If you have been living under a rock and haven't discovered the Fab Four, you have to get musically educated. Stream them on Spotify, find them on iTunes or even buy a CD or record (Yes, those still exist!). I would suggest starting with 1, which is a collection of most of their #1 songs, or the 1968 White Album. Give them chance and you'll never look back.

14 Invisible Activities: Unleash Your Inner Ghost!

The best superpower ever? Being invisible of course. Imagine just being able to go from seen to unseen on a dime. Who wouldn't want to have the opportunity to be invisible? Superman and Batman have nothing on being invisible with their superhero abilities. Here are some things that you could do while being invisible, because being invisible can benefit your social life too.

1. "Haunt" your friends.

Follow them into their house and cause a ruckus.

2. Sneak into movie theaters.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

The love you have for your family is outstanding. Watching you interact with loved ones just makes me smile . You are so comfortable and you are yourself. I see the way you smile when you are around family and I wish I could see you smile like this everyday. You love with all your heart and this quality is something I wished I possessed.

You inspire me to be the best version of myself. I look up to you. I feel that more people should strive to have the strength and passion that you exemplify in everyday life.You may be stubborn at points but when you really need help you let others in, which shows strength in itself. I have never been more proud to know someone and to call someone my role model. You have taught me so many things and I want to thank you. Thank you for inspiring me in life. Thank you for making me want to be a better person.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.
