‘Borderlands’ Begs the Question: Cate Blanchett, What Are You Doing?

BETTER THAN THIS

The era of great video game adaptations comes to and with the “Guardians of the Galaxy” knock-off that was delayed three years. (And should have been delayed forever.)

Nick Schager

Nick Schager

Entertainment Critic

A photo of Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Kevin Hart as Roland, Florian Munteanu as Krieg and Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis

Three years after it completed principal photography, Borderlands arrives in theaters on Friday, August 9, and it doesn’t take long to understand the delay.

Headlined by Cate Blanchett in a role that gives new meaning to the term generic, this adaptation of Gearbox Software’s video game series desperately wants to be Guardians of the Galaxy but has no interest in—much less skill at—concocting a unique story or fleshed-out characters. Merely a skeleton of superior ancestors, writer/director Eli Roth’s fiasco is so drearily routine and slapdash that even an A.I. would deem it too plagiaristic.

Set in a galaxy, far, far away from originality, Borderlands opens with a Star Wars riff in which rebel soldier Roland ( Kevin Hart ) rescues imprisoned maiden Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt) from a starship with the aid of hulking behemoth Krieg (Florian Munteanu), who wears a mask, growls a lot of inanities, and is known as a “psycho.”

Tina is central to a prophecy which states that a daughter of an extinct alien race will bring peace to the galaxy by opening a secret vault that’s located on the planet Pandora. Because the vault supposedly houses untold power, it’s coveted by every bandit, scoundrel, and greedy lunatic in the universe, and as faithfully envisioned by Roth, Pandora is a debris-strewn wasteland that mixes Mad Max ruthlessness with Fallout outrageousness.

On a different, sub- Blade Runner world, bounty hunter Lilith (Blanchett) pulls up to her favorite bar with her latest catch in tow. Lilith is defined by both her fiery red hair—which curls out in a wave on one side, and demands that she habitually blow it out of her face—and her unflappable if weary cool.

Despite simply wanting to have a drink and finish her job, she’s approached by minions of corporate bigwig Atlas (Edgar Ramirez) and offered a payday she can’t refuse: Travel to Pandora and locate Tina. Lilith grumbles about this assignment because Pandora is the “shithole” home she never wanted to revisit. Upon arriving, she’s further annoyed by the appearance of mouthy robot Claptrap ( Jack Black ), who’s magically awakened due to her presence and immediately starts badmouthing her as “awful” and a “horrendous she-devil” even though she’s hardly done anything to warrant this abuse.

Such scattershot writing is emblematic of Borderlands , whose screenplay (by Roth and Joe Crombie) employs shorthand clichés in place of actual, involving details. The film acts as if we’ve seen this all before and, thus, require no distinctive specifics to remain engaged.

That mistake continues throughout its introductory passages, in which Lilith locates Tiny Tina and learns that she’s now a wacko pixie in bunny ears who throws explosive stuffed rabbits at anything she doesn’t like—and, when things get hairy, sicks the rampaging Krieg on her enemies. While she doesn’t outright say it, Lilith is the type that works alone, so she bristles at being forced to team up with Tiny Tina, Krieg, and Roland, who’s trying to keep the coveted girl out of the clutches of Atlas’ Crimson Guard army led by Commander Knoxx (Janina Gavankar), who—in perhaps the most tossed-off plot point in the entire affair—is Roland’s ex-girlfriend.

Gearbox Software’s games were light on plot and heavy on action, and Roth doubles down on that formula to monotonous results. On the run, Lilith and company race about trying to find sacred keys that will unlock the vault, and in this endeavor, they eventually seek the assistance of Dr. Patricia Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), an expert who exists only to spout exposition and to contribute to Lilith’s mommy issues, which are laughable window dressing.

Blanchett barely tries to embody her protagonist as a three-dimensional human being, and while that’s wise (since the script makes such an endeavor impossible), her cooler-than-cool posturing is painfully affected and unconvincing, as are her faux-badass wisecracks and threats.

Borderlands ’ ineptness knows no bounds, be it casting Hart in a Han Solo-esque part that denies him any jokey banter (his specialty) and asks him to be stout and heroic (not his specialty), saddling Black with an endless stream of terrible one-liners (which turn him into a constant annoyance), or prioritizing characters’ colorful looks and brash attitudes over all else. Lilith and Tina are destined for mother-daughter bonding, just as Lilith—spoiler warning, for the precious few who won’t see it coming—is fated to be the genuine chosen one that can open the vault. This is paint-by-numbers science fiction at its direst, and the sole time that Roth seems inspired is during a brief sojourn into a dank sewer populated by extra-psycho psychos who behave like sadistic cast-offs from one of his horror efforts.

Some of Borderlands ’ pacing issues are likely the result of prolonged post-production alterations (including reshoots overseen by Deadpool director Tim Miller). Yet that tinkering also probably rectified graver shortcomings, and is less responsible for the film’s problems than its initial, misbegotten conception.

A photo of Kevin Hart as Roland, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, and Cate Blanchett as Lilith

Kevin Hart as Roland, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, and Cate Blanchett as Lilith

A treasure hunt embellished with mythology about preordained saviors, hidden lairs, valuable items, and cosmic power, the film goes through turgid motions without bothering to provide the amusing and enchanting flourishes necessary to make them feel fresh again. This is especially galling since a pair of Oscar winners and popular comedians are all squandered in the process. Things aren’t helped by CG effects that alternate between passable and pedestrian—lowlighted by a run-in with a urine-spraying goliath that’s felled with such ease that it feels downright lazy.

Borderlands gets a decent amount of the game on screen, from ground vehicles and air ships to giant firearms and massive skirmishes. What made Borderlands a hit on the PlayStation and Xbox, however, was its cooperative play, and without the ability to actively control and partake in this large-scale chaos alongside friends, Roth’s film comes across as merely a garish rehash with dreams of echoing Marvel ’s motley crew of galaxy-guarding misfits.

Lacking the emotional depth, narrative creativity, and witty humor of James Gunn’s beloved MCU trilogy, Roth’s big-budget venture is propelled only by borrowed ideas and stale execution, both of which cause it to crash and burn in spectacular fashion.

Review: ‘Alien: Romulus’ Is Scary And Filled With Great Surprises

Filmmaker Fede Álvarez’s anxiously awaited legacy sequel Alien: Romulus debuts to much fanfare this weekend, and is expected to top the weekend box office with $40-50 million domestically and $80-90 million worldwide. And it certainly deserves to, as a worthy new chapter in the Alien saga that’s scary and filled with great surprises.

The xenomorph returns to terrorize Cailee Spaeny in "Alien: Romulus."

Cowritten by Álvarez and his frequent collaborator scribe Rodo Sayagues — the two previously worked together on the Don’t Breathe horror films, as well as the reboot of the Evil Dead horror series — Alien: Romulus seeks to revive the blockbuster sci-fi horror franchises started by 1979’s Alien and certified as a pop culture icon by 1986’s direct sequel Aliens .

Alien: Romulus grossed around $6.5 million from previews heading into the weekend, putting it on par with the $6.8 million scored by last month’s horror hit A Quiet Place: Day One , although notably that film was rated PG-13 whereas Alien: Romulus carries a hard-R for extremely graphic violence and a lot of profanity.

A Quiet Place Day One finished its freshman weekend with more than $50 million, no doubt aided by that PG-13 rating’s additional draw on younger teens. Alien: Romulus won’t enjoy that benefit, but it has a longer-lived and larger fanbase as an iconic franchise, which could translate into not only a bigger opening weekend turnout by fans by also wider awareness and interest among mainstream viewers.

We’ll see if Alien: Romulus can overperform toward a $45+ million bow, and perhaps make a run at $50 million if word of mouth is as good as it seems to be so far. Critical reception is the best of any Alien franchise film since the second film ( Aliens ) — indeed, it’s notable that Romulus even has better critical reception than the original film Alien received upon its release. The critical reassessments over the years resulted in far more positive reviews and the modern reputation as an all-time great film.

Likewise, audience reactions to Alien: Romulus are thus far highly positive, particularly considering the genre and subgenres tend to have more picky fans and lower average audience scores. Additionally, the Alien franchise is already on folks’ minds this year, because there was a theatrical re-release earlier this year that landed Alien in the box office top-10 .

All of this should translate into good awareness and strong word of mouth, which could drive a lot of walk-up business and help the film over-perform on Saturday and Sunday, especially (and obviously) if it’s already over-performing on Friday. So I’ll expect it to play at around $45 million domestic, and possibly higher, while international ticket sales should likewise enjoy a bit of a bump and land close to about $40 million.

An $80-90 million opening weekend with good buzzy word of mouth for Alien: Romulus is great news for 20th Century Studios and parent company Disney. Disney is already ruling the box office this year with north of $3 billion in global receipts so far and in total control of summer movie season, from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ($397 million) and Inside Out 2 ($1.6 billion), to Deadpool & Wolverine ($1+ billion) and now Alien: Romulus .

A 3x final multiplier would get Alien: Romulus to around $240-270 million, so call it roughly $250 million at that level of audience reception. But 3.3x gets it closer to $300 million, if it can land at the higher end of estimates this first weekend, and that’s more where the studio hopes to be by the end of its run.

With an $80 million budget and low marketing costs, and having originally been planned as a direct-to-streaming release, Alien: Romulus appears already on course for a good outcome.

Which is more than I can say for the film’s characters — and I mean that in all of the best possible ways, because Alien: Romulus deserves all of the praise it’s getting as a worthy sequel to the first two films, and an excellent wrap-up/tie-together of the various sequels and prequels. It opens doors for more top-tier storytelling in the Alien universe, with relatable characters and talented cast who seem like real people in terrifying situations without a lot of “good outcomes.”

I will be very careful to avoid spoilers, and I urge you not to read much about Alien: Romulus before seeing it — don’t even look at production information, cast info, or still images from the film. Even this warning is a hint there are things you probably don’t know and shouldn’t know before seeing the film, to maximize the surprises.

Suffice to say, the trailers are intentionally deceptively simple in what they show (kudos to the crew who pulled that off with the trailer), and I assure you what they show is merely a small fraction of what’s actually in store for the characters this time around. So I’m going to mirror that approach by mentioning as little as possible about the film’s details or characters.

This is a story that easily could’ve been told back in the early 1980s as an actual direct sequel to Alien , and as a predecessor for Aliens . It feels apiece of that overarching story, it fits wonderfully, it both expands the stories and concepts yet also keeps it all from spiraling into something too big to tell in a single setting.

It’s at once perfectly smartly contained and adds a larger complicated backdrop and world to the Alien universe. That’s difficult, smart storytelling from Álvarez and Sayagues.

I must admit that the filmmakers’ prior works simply didn’t prepare me for Alien: Romulus . I mean no disrespect, and I enjoyed plenty of their other films, but they’re simply operating at an entirely new level here. Everything is working, firing on all cylinders, artists at the top of their game because the name and the legacy require it, demanding the best of everyone. It’s a sign of artists who’ve been waiting for the chance to show us what they’re capable of.

That inspiration to play at peak performance was obviously infectious, as everybody here is going above and beyond. The cast are excellent, bringing the same sense of desperate working-class or poor people who were already trapped with little hope, long before the xenomorphs arrived.

Cailee Spaeny is exceptional in the lead, and if you thought she was great in Civil War earlier this year wait til you see her in Alien: Romulus . David Jonsson is the other big standout performance, walking a delicate line without losing his balance once. The rest of the cast, especially Isabela Merced, carry their own weight as well, delivering the right blend of youthful hope and cynicism with sudden confrontation with the inexplicable and horrible.

The fact this film includes lots of not just homages and callbacks but outright references and mirroring of the first two movies — including plenty of instances of relying on the same beats — is a feature, not a bug. I know some longtime fans might be put off by a couple of these, but the overt referencing and direct ties are important and necessary for the language of this storytelling.

Alien: Romulus is coming full circle, a soft resetting of the series to bring everyone back on board together and get us all up to speed, including new viewers. While some of us rewatch the Alien films frequently, most of the mainstream public who’ve even seen the movies (the majority have probably not seen them) haven’t seen them in probably quite a while, aside from the recent theatrical rerelease.

There was also a home release this year of a gorgeous 4K UHD remastering of the films that gets Aliens far closer to how the film’s writer-director James Cameron filmed it and wanted it to look — and far closer to the look and feel of Scott’s Alien .

Thematically, Alien: Romulus builds on the first two films’ examinations of class divisions and class unities (i.e. workers and soldiers as the backbones of society who do the real work, corporations exploiting everyone and feeding workers and soldiers to some external enemies), including issues around immigration and the exploitation of child labor.

There’s also what could’ve been (and has been, in other films of lesser care and intent) a misguided commentary on how we treat those with special needs and mental or physical challenges, but instead turns out to be a delicate and thoughtful representation of those relationships and the choices people make for themselves and those they care for. This even includes subtexts about how our caregivers as children (be it parents or siblings or those primarily tasked with raising us) can eventually come to need us to be their caregivers, but whether we rise to those occasions — and that society is structured too often in ways making hard or impossible to do so.

The quality of the writing is matched in the remarkable visual storytelling. Álvarez’s directing and Galo Olivares magnificent cinematography elevate the already impressive material and provide plenty of visual cues signaling the connective tissue with the other films, yet establishes its own clear visual style and use of effects.

The space sequences, particularly orbiting above the planet’s rings, are mesmerizing and gorgeous, as well as looking like they’re filmed in actual outer space. These are among my favorite scenes and images of the entire series, and seeing it in a Dolby Cinema with the brilliance of Dolby Vision and immersion of Dolby Atmos makes me happy I have a home theater to watch it on for years to come after it hits home entertainment. Limited-edition 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' popcorn buckets coming to theaters. How to get one

movie reviewers daily crossword

The upcoming "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" movie hits theaters in just a few weeks, and fans have the opportunity to score a limited-edition Beetlejuice popcorn bucket.

The sale will take place at select theaters, including Cinemark, AMC, Alamo Drafthouse, and Regal Cinemas. Most likely, the buckets will sell out quickly, so it's advised to check with local theaters for availability ahead of the release.

A long-awaited sequel to the beloved 1988 classic, the rollout of "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice " comes with limited-edition merch and collectibles, including popcorn buckets with various movie inspired themes. Here's how to find the special edition Beetlejuice popcorn buckets.

Where can I get the Beetlejuice popcorn buckets?

Regal Cinemas will be selling the special edition sandworm-themed popcorn bucket, according to an Aug. 5 Facebook post . Alamo Drafthouse will also have the sandworm collectible popcorn buckets while supplies last from Sept. 2 through Sept. 30, according to an email sent to subscribers, NorthJersey.com reported.

AMC and Cinemark will offer special Beetlejuice-themed popcorn buckets of their own. AMC announced on social media that the chain would be selling Beetlejuice-inspired merchandise, which includes a popcorn bucket resembling the "Handbook for the Recently Deceased," featured in the original film.
