BPCC invites new students to enroll as classes resume for 2024-25 school year

BOSSIER CITY, La. (KSLA) - As students across the ArkLaTex return to campus, faculty and staff at Bossier Parish Community College (BPCC) were excited for the first day of classes.

KSLA’s Naydu Daza Maya met up with school representatives who discussed what students can expect this school year.

“Today, we are excited to start students. We are excited to get them started with classes with all sorts of services to help them transition with their classes,” the BPCC representative said.

Session A classes started Thursday (Aug. 15), but it’s not too late to enroll.

“We have different sessions available during our semester, so you can actually register for classes up until November. We pride ourselves on having different options for our students.”

There are flexible options for every student, including nontraditional ones.

“We’ve got our traditional 16-week semesters; we even got shorter programs that can even be delivered even in boot camp style like some of our CNA courses, some of our forklift operator, variety of courses, variety of options,” the BPCC representative said.

You can also access a requirement list to prepare your school application.

“We have our new student checklist on our main page on the BPCC website. It goes through everything on how to do the application, immunization shot records, or waver form, selective service, different things like that. So it’s all broken down for you.”

BPCC encourages all interested students to apply all year long, at the 24/7 online application page and request a campus tour.

Calculate for all schools

Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, my high school resume is mostly blank. what should i do.

I'm feeling a little lost right now. I'm a junior and my high school resume is almost blank. I'm not sure how to fill it out or what I should be doing to improve it for college applications. Any advice?

You're already on the right track by recognizing the importance of a high school resume in your college application. Don't let the stress overwhelm you, though. Remember that a high school resume is a document that reflects your accomplishments, involvement, and interests, so let's focus on those areas.

One simple way to add to your resume is to include your academic achievements till now. This might include honors and AP classes you've taken or awards you've received in school. Essentially, anything that shows your dedication and achievement in your studies can be added.

Another strategy is to find opportunities to participate more in school clubs, sports, or other organized activities that exist in your school or community. Since you're a junior, you still have time to seek leadership positions in those organizations next year, and that would definitely bolster your resume.

Speaking of extracurricular activities or interests, consider starting your own project related to what you like. If you're interested in writing, consider starting a blog or writing stories. If it's computer coding, develop a simple app. If it's photography, start an online portfolio. This could become a Tier 3, or maybe even a Tier 2, extracurricular if done well.

Consider volunteering in the community. Service work shows that you're not just committed to your personal growth, but also the well-being of your community. This might be through a local food bank, homeless shelter, hospital, etc.

And finally, if it's viable, part-time jobs or internships can also make a difference. This can show colleges that you've started gaining real-world experience.

Here's an example for better understanding. Imagine a junior interested in journalism whose resume is currently sparse. They might join their school paper, seek out an internship or job at a local newspaper or magazine, perhaps, and start their own blog where they write and publish their own articles. These concerted efforts would definitely beef up the resume.

Remember, quantity is less important than quality. Colleges appreciate students who show dedication and make a significant impact in a few areas, rather than those engaging minimally in a large number of activities.

Abortions to resume in North Dakota after court finds near-total ban unconstitutional

resume help at bpcc

Abortions are now legal in North Dakota after the state Supreme Court ruled its near-total abortion ban was unconstitutionally vague.

The ruling came as part of a lawsuit filed by physicians that asked the court to strike down the ban in its entirety. A North Dakota South Central Judicial District Court judge granted that request Thursday.

At least 21 states currently have bans or restrictions in place on abortion care. Of those states, 13 states have ceased nearly all abortion services and four states prohibit abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, before most women know they are pregnant.

MORE: North Dakota House passes near-total abortion ban with limited exceptions

Abortion is currently illegal in South Dakota.

Plaintiffs argued the ban was unconstitutionally vague and made it impossible to interpret the language surrounding when abortions are allowed under medical exceptions, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights, which filed the lawsuit.

PHOTO: In this Aug. 5, 2022, file photo, an abortion clinic, that for nearly 25 years operated on a busy street in downtown Fargo, N.D., is moving to this commercial building in an industrial area in neighboring Moorhead, Minn.

Physicians who violate the ban could be found guilty of a class C felony, punishable with up to five years of imprisonment, a $10,000 fine or both.

The court also found pregnant women have a fundamental right to choose an abortion before viability under the state constitution.

"The North Dakota Constitution guarantees each individual, including women, the fundamental right to make medical judgments affecting his or her bodily integrity, health, and autonomy, in consultation with a chosen health care provider free from government interference," Judge Bruce Romanick wrote in the opinion.

Mediated talks resume in Metro Vancouver HandyDART strike

The union representing Metro Vancouver HandyDART drivers and its employer, Transdev, are scheduled to return to the bargaining table Thursday. Drivers walked off the job last Tuesday, stopping most service.

The dispute largely centres around pay. The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1724 says its members don't make as much as others working similar roles elsewhere in Canada.

Gislaine Bates has been a driver for HandyDART for six years. She spent Thursday morning at the picket line in Cloverdale with her coworkers.

“I make a good wage, but I still live paycheque to paycheque because I’m not making enough,” Bates told CTV News.

“I have to work a lot of overtime and whatnot to subsidize and it's not fair. I should be able to spend some time with my family."

The drivers and Transdev will resume mediated talks on Thursday, but the union’s president has warned the strike may not be a short one. The two sides are still far apart. The last offer from the company was turned down by members in a vote of 83 per cent against accepting the deal.

HandyDART is a door-to-door transit service for people who are unable to navigate the conventional transit system. The service has been suspended for all but those needing transportation to urgent medical appointments like cancer treatments.

Hundreds of drivers rallied outside TransLink’s head office earlier this week, calling for the transportation provider to intervene in the dispute with Transdev, which is contracted to oversee HandyDART service.

TransLink said it has no role in the labour dispute, which is between the drivers and Transdev.

“I think that's ridiculous," said Bates. "I think TransLink should step in and I truly believe that if TransLink wanted to bring us in house and fix this situation, that they would. I just think that they just want to wash their hands with us."

Transdev said earlier this week that it will provide a reply to the union’s latest proposal on Thursday.

A statement from the company said it “strongly believes” that its employees deserve fair wages, and that a fair contract “must balance the needs of their employees, clients and taxpayers.”

Bates says her heart goes out to regular riders who are stranded at home due to the strike.

“A short-term pain for a long-term gain is better, because I think if we have more desirable wages, we're going to be able to attract us drivers, to be able to get more buses on the road so we can accommodate trips,” said Bates.
