M.S. Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism (Thesis Option)

The Master of Science (M.S.) thesis option is designed for students interested in progressing to advanced studies in a doctoral program, as well as those pursuing professional careers. 

Program Details

  • Degree: M.S. Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism (Thesis Option)
  • Credit Hours: 32 hours of graduate classes minimum, plus other courses assigned by the student’s advisory committee

While the MS thesis program is customized by the student and their advisor to suit their circumstances, it is a common requirement that MS thesis students should take a minimum of 15 HMGT credits (not including HMGT 691) . 

The M.S. coursework should include: 

  • Minimum of 3 credits statistics
  • Minimum of 3 credits of research methods
  • Maximum of 8 hours of  HMGT 691 (Research)

A final degree plan should be approved by all members of the committee and should reflect the expected rigor of an M.S. degree.

Tourism and Hospitality (Dissertation Only) MSc

This course is your chance to complete your masters degree with a dissertation - a written project based on your interests and career goals. Take your next career steps and get the qualifications you need to work in one of the world's largest industries.

With this one-year, globally recognised degree, you'll get the skills and knowledge you need to enter the world of tourism and hospitality. Using a social science approach to the sector, the course combines practise and theory on modules like ‘Tourism Concepts and Issues’ and 'Research Methods for the Service Sector'. Plus we offer an optional workplace module. You'll go on several field trips and company visits so you can see what you're learning put into a real-world context.

With more independent working than the undergraduate degree, you'll be marked on your essays, exams, presentations, portfolios of evidence and the dissertation.

2024/25 fees.

The annual fee for this course is:

  • £2,750 for UK Home/EU (settled/pre-settled status only)
  • £5,500 for International/EU (non-settled status) 

For the 2024/25 academic year, even though you are classified as an International Student, EU nationals receive a £1,750 scholarship, which reduces the fees from £5,500 to £3,750. The discounted fee will be reflected in your offer letter.

We use the word "dissertation" for work done as part of an undergraduate or taught master's course, and we use "thesis" for work done for PhD or Research masters degrees.

Dissertations and theses completed before 2019 were submitted to DIT, which preceded TU Dublin, and these are listed as Dublin Institute of Technology works.

Printed dissertations are currently shelved in Grangegorman Library on the 2nd floor and go back 5 years.  The Arrow repository holds a number of theses in electronic form. 

T o browse dissertations for a particular program select the Subject search option from the drop down menu on the catalogue . Then enter your program code e.g. DT401 or your program title e.g. BSc International Hospitality Management  to obtain a list of the print dissertations and/or eDissertations for that course. A dissertation may be available in print or in electronic format. (Note: For print dissertations in Blanchardstown - select advanced search. In the search term enter the course title and leave the menu on 'any field'. Enter the location as Blanchardstown and for material type select dissertation. Then press submit.)

Critical evaluation of summer festivals in the UK as a source of domestic tourism development.

The difference in cost of medical procedures in different countries combined with the lower cost of travel has led to the development of medical tourism. The price dynamics of medical procedures in developed economies is developed under stringent regulatory and legal frameworks, which is coupled with higher cost of living in these economies, therefore resulting in significantly higher costs in comparison with emerging and developing economies. This high cost differential is combined with deteriorating cost of international travel, which has resulted in the emergence of medical tourism. This chapter introduces the ensuing chapters in the book Tourism and Hospitality for Sustainable Development—Volume One: Technological Innovations and Development Realities . As the chapter shows, it might not be entirely incorrect to assert that the contemporary tourism and hospitality industry is transitioning to innovative technological interventions to improve services and products in pursuit of sustainable development. This is demonstrated by the rapid and radical transitions enterprises are making towards digital tools, as detailed in the chapters in this book. The book sits at the intersection of three sets of academic literature: literature on tourism and hospitality, literature on sustainable development, and literature on digitalisation. As a general trend, these three strands of literature do not sufficiently engage with each other, and this book seeks to address this scholarly gap through several empirically based case studies of various tourism and hospitality businesses worldwide. Much of the literature on digitalisation and sustainable development in the tourism and hospitality industry is focused on how enterprises integrated digital tools to survive COVID-19 safety protocols. This has tended to crowd out studies about digitalisation in the pre- and post-COVID-19 period. This book, thus, emphasises the value of integrating digital technologies in the tourism and hospitality industries before and after COVID-19 in offering a more refined analysis of twenty-first-century digital inventions, innovations, and development realities in the tourism and hospitality industry.

The bachelor of science in Hospitality Management is now offered on the St. Petersburg campus. The degree will help create a talent pipeline in a hotbed of tourism and keep pace with pandemic-era trends that have changed the industry.

Led by the School of Hospitality and Management at the Muma College of Business, this major prepares graduates for global leadership positions in the hospitality industry through foundational knowledge of hospitality operations and experiences that develop critical thinkers who promote lifelong learning and community engagement.

The Muma College of Business offers a B.S. in Hospitality and Tourism Management on the St. Petersburg campus.

Hospitality & tourism Management AT USF ST. PETERSBURG

Hospitality and tourism is the number one industry in Florida, and a hotbed in the Tampa Bay area. There is a major demand from industry partners in the St. Petersburg - Clearwater area for a hospitality school where talent can be developed and graduates can work in local businesses.

Many opportunities exist for students to receive real-world experiences. For example, USF partners with businesses such as McKibbon Hospitality, which manages 98 hotels and 20 premier brands including Marriott and Hilton, to connect the next generation of hotel managers with hotel industry professionals and gain real-world experience in hotel operations, executive-level leadership and real estate and hotel development. Other business partners include Aramark, the on-campus food service and catering stalwart, and Mainsail Lodging and Development, a specialist in the tourism lodging sector.

Students in the Hospitality & Tourism Management program can expect to earn jobs as managers, assistant managers, executive chefs, bar managers, food and beverage coordinators, human resource managers and event planners in top hotels, restaurants, theme parks and tourist attractions in the hospitality industry.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR IN Hospitality & tourism Management

Always refer to the Undergraduate Catalog for degree requirements. Students will typically begin progress toward the major by taking at least one course from the major core, as these often serve as prerequisites for the electives. Students are urged to consult with their advisors to create the most beneficial set of courses.
