I've long been inspired by an idea I first learned about in The Artist's Way called morning pages. Morning pages are three pages of writing done every day, typically encouraged to be in "long hand", typically done in the morning, that can be about anything and everything that comes into your head. It's about getting it all out of your head, and is not supposed to be edited or censored in any way. The idea is that if you can get in the habit of writing three pages a day, that it will help clear your mind and get the ideas flowing for the rest of the day. Unlike many of the other exercises in that book, I found that this one actually worked and was really really useful.

I've used the exercise as a great way to think out loud without having to worry about half-formed ideas, random tangents, private stuff, and all the other things in our heads that we often filter out before ever voicing them or writing about them. It's a daily brain dump. Over time, I've found that it's also very helpful as a tool to get thoughts going that have become stuck, or to help get to the bottom of a rotten mood.

750 Words is the online, future-ified, fun-ified translation of this exercise. Here's how it works:

★ All online and private

In the past, looking for a spare notebook was probably easier than looking for a computer. Not anymore. I don't know if my hands even work anymore with pen and paper for any task that takes longer than signing a check or credit card receipt.

★ It's not blogging or status updating

I've tried writing my 750 words a day on Livejournal, Wordpress, PBWorks, Tumblr, and all of these other sites designed around putting content online. It hasn't worked for me. I fear that I might accidentally forget to mark daily pages as private. And it's just weird having my private brain dumps out on various sites that are designed to be more social. I don't need to title my entries, or tag them, or enable comments, or any of that other stuff. This is writing, and it's online, but it's not blogging, or Twittering, or Facebook status updating. This is between you and you.

★ 3 Pages = 750 words

I looked this up. 250 words per page is considered to be the standard accepted number of words per page. So, three standard pages are about 750 words. Of course if 750words.com hadn't been available, I would've totally found a way to prove that 249 words per page was the accepted standard. It really just comes down to the fact that this amount of writing feels about right. You can't just fart out 3 pages without running into your subconscious a little bit... 750 words takes a bit of effort, and it never fails to get me typing things that I have wanted to articulate without realizing it. And that's the point.

Because 750 words is nothing to sneeze at, it's also nice to have an easy way to know how many words you have to go. This site of course tracks your word count at all times and lets you know when you've passed the blessed 750 mark. And it gives you a nice big screen to write on, automatically scrolls as you write (like a typewriter), and automatically saves your writing as you go.

★ It's fun

Every month you get a clean slate. If you write anything at all, you get 1 point. If you write 750 words or more, you get 2 points. If you write two, three or more days in a row, you get even more points. It's fun to try to stay on streaks and the points are a way to play around with that. You can also see how others are doing points-wise if you're at all competitive that way. How I see it, points can motivate early on, and eventually the joy of writing will kick in and you'll be writing without any external motivation at all.

★ Learn about yourself in the process

For example, learn about how often you get distracted, and how fast you write.

If you aspire to be a writer, and read tips from well known authors, you’ll have come across the advice that you should write every day.

Sharon suggested this in the best way to start out in freelance writing :

I recommend writing every day, even if it’s only for a little while. It makes writing part of your daily routine and it makes it easy to draw on the skills you have built up even if a particular writing project isn’t very inspiring.

And she’s in good company. Stephen King (in On Writing ) tells fiction writers to aim for a target of 1,000 words a day, six days a week. Julia Cameron’s bestselling book The Artist’s Way has popularised the idea of “the morning pages” – writing three pages in your journal when you wake up. And if you have a blog, whether a personal or professional one, you might well be trying to publish something new every day (perhaps you want to emulate the success of blogs like ‘ Daily Writing Tips’ … ;-))

Knowing that it’s a good idea to write every day, however, doesn’t make it easy to do so! Often, you’ll be busy and struggle to find a chance to write – and when you do have the time, you may not feel creative. Here’s how to write fiction, journal entries or blog posts every day:

I’ve found it easiest to write daily when I’m working on a longer piece of fiction, such as a novel. End each day in the middle of a scene (or even in the middle of a sentence), and you’ll never be faced with a blank screen at the start of your writing session.

Have a target number of words or pages to aim for each day – perhaps working towards a deadline. I’d strongly recommend taking part in NaNoWriMo this November (or doing your own novel writing month before then); to “win” you have to write 50,000 words in a month – averaging 1,667 per day. It’s challenging, but will definitely help you to establish the daily writing habit!

If you’re working on short stories, and aiming to write every day, I’d urge you to count planning, outlining and editing as part of your writing. You might find you need to allocate a day for coming up with ideas (brainstorming), a day for planning in more detail, then three or four days to write the first draft.

You don’t need to write in your journal first thing in the morning. If, like me, you’re a “morning person”, you might well find it’s a good time to think through your plans and hopes for the day in writing … but for many people, finding time to journal before breakfast just isn’t practical.

The important thing with daily journaling is to be consistent with when you do it. Pick a time of day when you’ll always write in your journal (before breakfast, during your lunch hour, last thing at night before you go to bed) and it will quickly become a habit.

Also, try to see your journaling as a treat – a little chunk of time set aside just for you and your thoughts. It might help to buy a really nice notebook to write in (I have a lovely A4 hardback one for my journal), or to have your favourite drink or snack during your journaling time.

Just because you want to publish a post every day doesn’t mean you have to write one each day: many bloggers write several posts ahead of time (perhaps at the weekend, if they have full-time jobs) then publish them throughout the week. Skellie, for example, suggests:

Set aside one morning or afternoon on the quietest day of the week where you will write all non-news posts for the following seven days.

However, if you have a news-orientated blog, you’ll need to cover stories as and when they break – writing and publishing on the same day. Or if your blog is a personal diary, you might be trying to keep it updated daily (especially if you’re posting your achievements towards a goal).

In these situations, a deadline and a sense of responsibility to your readers can work wonders. Promise on your blog that there’ll be a new post each day, then set yourself a private daily deadline (eg. 8pm) and aim to hit “publish” before then. Even when you’re not in the mood to write, the embarrassment of letting your readers down will motivate you to get typing…

I think it definitely helps to get the word out there to your readers that you plan on posting by a certain time, or plan on doing anything that you plan to update them on in the near future.

It also helps to read any material that has to do with writing, as it ups the inspiration factor, and even makes you feel like you need to work harder to be as good as the writers you’re reading about. I read blogs that talk about writing and freelancing daily, and even on days writing makes me shiver with fear, that reminder that the successful writers are the ones who keep plugging away no matter what. It’s important for us humans to know we’re not alone, and reading about someone else’s similar woes helps us immensely to just keep forging ahead.

I try to post to my blog each day. Some days are definitely easier than others, as I’m a stay at home mum with 3 kids. I would love to sit down on the weekend and write a week’s worth of posts, but we keep weekends for family time.

I have found the best thing for me to do is brainstorm or mindmap my posts during some quiet time after my kids have gone to bed. I tend not to be able to write really well at that time of day, but the general ideas are there. Then in the mornings, I can usually find time to flesh out a post from my mindmap.

I set up my blog, Three Beautiful Things, with the intention of writing it every day. I thought — what sort of an idiot would fail to write three sentences and a header?

It’s worked, pretty much. There’s a post for every day since 18 May 2004. If I’m away from a computer, I write in my notebook and catch up later.

There are a couple of things that have kept me going — one is that I know my father reads it at work with his sandwich, so have to post by lunchtime; and the other is that I get the occasional message from a reader who says that 3BT is helping them through a dark time — so I’m haunted by the feeling that someone out there might be waiting for a post.

Bill O’Hanlon, the author of many books including “Write is a Verb” says that to help you establish a habit of writing everyday, you should start by writing for 15 minutes a day. Obviously you can write longer if you get into something, but he says you should make it your goal to write for 15 minutes everyday.

I think that’s really good advice because it allows you to break writing into managable chunks and doesn’t make you feel overwhelmed because lets face it, 15 minutes is really not that much time.

The idea is that eventually you’ll want to keep on writing for longer. I’m going to try it starting this weekend and see how it goes.

Writing everyday is really critical! I feel it when I DON’T write in a day. I am either writing in my blogs, or writing in my novel, ever single day. I might not get a lot accomplished, but it’s something, and it keeps me in the “habit” of writing.

I set some goals when I started blogging; I write in my personal journal on LiveJournal at least four times a week. I have a big readership and this keeps me on track. I do paid writing for a tech blog, I can write as much or as little as I want, but I set a goal of at least two articles a week. For my writing blog, I try to update at least once a week. For the disability services blog I write for, I write one article a week.

I find that setting those goals then “keeping up” with them has helped me develop much better writing habits, not to mention plenty of great practice.

I find that I feel better when I write (is that the definition of an addiction?). Hence, I write every day because I feel better.

Journal writing – everyday at 10AM

Short stories – written 6-8PM two or three nights a week

Blogs – 1PM

Having a book in progress is the easiest way to write everyday.

I try to write everyday on my blog but some times it’s just not easy. Thank you for this post, it’ll inspire me to write everyday for at least a week 🙂

Writing every day can be difficult at times. Especially if you have no computer access for days… I tend to think of those times as my ‘vacation’ times, where it’s not an obligation. But I still write.

And thank you for mentioning Nanowrimo. (One of my deepest loves; next to Sweeney Todd and, of course, Sailor Moon.)

Meh, I frequently write in my journal and actually always enjoy it – it’s a fun activity to me – but after several years of this I don’t feel it’s so beneficial as others here suggest.

To me the suggestions in under the ‘FICTION’ title may offer more. I see more worth in a goal like that.

This webpage comes up first when i enter “write every day” into Google. So google thinks that many people are picking this link first and there are many links to this page. Very good. I am an aspiring writer. My main block is that I am not writing everyday. So this advice is good advice for me. NPR had a show today, I think “Fresh Air”, that gave advice on writing, and “write everyday” was the first item. I googled it to followup. The second piece of advice was “rewrite everyday”. The interviewee said that he rewrites the previous day’s writing every day. As for writing itself, he first creates charaters, then location, then puts them in action. I will follow up on that too! Wish me luck.

today is very cold and windy. Every one is sleeping in my family but i am still awake. It is deep pitch dark night. but the unique silence around. There is undescribable silent music of darkness. Which has a strange beauty of its own. I can hear the music of night cricket. And some sweetness of wind.

I agree. A writer should write every day. As for myself, I’ve set a deadline that I’m determined to meet which is to write a chapter every week. It gives me something to look forward to, a challenge that helps me focus on the novel I’m working on.

Well written post and the ideas given are implementable. But the problem with me that am not writing everyday. I would try to stick with 30 days writing challenge but during heavy workload I couldn’t maintain that. Also when I have time I don’t feel thoughts pouring in. Knowing how to write an essay can help you out significantly in both, your academic and professional life. An essay is a highly versatile nonfiction piece of writing that not only tests your knowledge of a topic but also your literary and argumentative skills.     

Each essay requires the same basic process of planning, writing, and editing. Naturally, we’ve used these stages to group our steps on how to write an essay. So w ithout further ado, let’s get into it! Here are the eight steps to write an essay:

Stage 1: Planning

1. Pick an appropriate research topic

In certain cases, your teacher or professor may assign you a topic. However, in many cases, students have the freedom to select a topic of their choice. Make sure you choose a topic that you’re well versed in and have significant knowledge of. 

Having prior knowledge of the topic will help you determine the subsequent steps to write an essay. It will also make your research process considerably easier.

2. Form an appropriate thesis statement

A thesis statement is the central idea or premise your essay is based on. It is usually a sentence or two long and is included in the introduction of the essay. The scope of your thesis statement depends on the type of your essay and its length.

For instance, the scope of the thesis statement for a 500–1000 word school essay will be narrower than a 1000–5000 word college essay. A rule of thumb is that your essay topic should be broad enough to gather enough information, but narrow enough to address specific points and not be vague. Here’s an example: 

The invention of the airplane by the Wright Brothers in 1903 revolutionized transportation and paved the way for modern aviation. It represents a monumental achievement in human history that forever changed the course of human civilization.

3. Create an essay outline

Creating a well-organized essay outline not only gives structure and flow to your essay but also makes it more impactful and easy to understand. The idea is to collect the main points of information that support or elaborate on your thesis statement. You can also include references or examples under these main points. 

For example, if your thesis statement revolves around the invention of the airplane, your main points will include travel before the invention of the airplane, how it was invented, and its effects on modern-day travel. Take a look:

The Wright Brothers’ invention had a massive impact on modern-day travel. The subsequent growth of the aviation industry led to increased accessibility of air travel to the general public.

Stage 2: Writing

4. Write a comprehensive introduction

After creating the basic outline, it is important to know how to write an essay. Begin your essay by introducing your voice and point of view to the reader. An introduction is usually a paragraph or two long and consists of three main parts:

  • Background information
  • Thesis statement

Let’s better understand this with the help of an example:

The Wright Brothers’ invention of the airplane in 1903 revolutionized the way humans travel and explore the world. Prior to this invention, transportation relied on trains, boats, and cars, which limited the distance and speed of travel. However, the airplane made air travel a reality, allowing people to reach far-off destinations in mere hours. This breakthrough paved the way for modern-day air travel, transforming the world into a smaller, more connected place. In this essay, we will explore the impact of the Wright Brothers’ invention on modern-day travel, including the growth of the aviation industry, increased accessibility of air travel to the general public, and the economic and cultural benefits of air travel.

Let’s understand how to construct each of these sections in more detail.

A. Construct an attractive hook

The opening sentence of an essay, also known as the hook, should include a powerful or startling statement that captures the reader’s attention. Depending on the type of your essay, it can be an interesting fact, a surprising statistic, or an engaging anecdote. 

B. Provide relevant background information

While writing the introduction, it’s important to provide context or background information before including the thesis statement. The background information may include the time before a groundbreaking invention, the pros and cons of a significant discovery, or the short- and long-term effects of an event.

C. Edit the thesis statement

If you’ve constructed your thesis statement during the outlining stage, it’s time to edit it based on the background information you’ve provided. Observe the slight changes we’ve made to the scope of the thesis statement in the example above. This accommodates the bits of information we’ve provided in the background history.

5. Form relevant body paragraphs

Body paragraphs play a crucial role in supporting and expanding the central argument presented in the thesis statement. The number of body paragraphs depends on the type of essay as well as the scope of the thesis statement.

Most school-level essays contain three body paragraphs while college-level essays can vary in length depending on the assignment.

A well-crafted body paragraph consists of the following parts:

  • A topic sentence
  • Supporting information
  • An analysis of the information
  • A smooth transition to the next paragraph

Let’s understand this with the help of an example. 

The Wright Brothers’ invention of the airplane revolutionized air travel. They achieved the first-ever successful powered flight with the Wright Flyer in 1903, after years of conducting experiments and studying flight principles. Despite their first flight lasting only 12 seconds, it was a significant milestone that paved the way for modern aviation. The Wright Brothers’ success can be attributed to their systematic approach to problem-solving, which included numerous experiments with gliders, the development of a wind tunnel to test their designs, and meticulous analysis and recording of their results. Here’s a detailed overview of how to construct each of these sections.

A. Construct appropriate topic sentences

A topic sentence is the title of the body paragraph that elaborates on the thesis statement. It is the main idea on which the body paragraph is developed. Ensure that each topic sentence is relevant to the thesis statement and makes the essay flow seamlessly. 

The order of topic sentences is key in creating an impactful essay. This order varies depending on the type of essay you choose to write. These sentences may be arranged chronologically, in the order of importance, or in a cause-and-effect format.

B. Provide supporting information

It is necessary to provide relevant supporting information and evidence to validate your topic statement. This may include examples, relevant statistics, history, or even personal anecdotes.

You should also remember to cite your sources wherever you use them to substantiate your arguments. Always give researchers and authors credit for their work!

C. Analyze the supporting information

After presenting the appropriate evidence, the next step is to conduct an in-depth analysis. Establish connections and provide additional details to strengthen the link between your topic sentence and the supporting information. 

Depending on the type of essay, this step may also involve sharing your subjective opinions and key takeaways.

D. Create a smooth transition

In case you plan to create multiple body paragraphs, it is crucial to create a seamless transition between them. Transitional statements not only make the essay less jarring to read but also guide the reader in the right direction.

However, these statements need not be too lengthy and complicated. Use words such as “however”, “in addition to”, and “therefore” to convey transitions.

6. Construct an impactful conclusion

An impactful conclusion creates a lasting impression on the mind of the reader. Although it varies in length depending on the specific essay, the conclusion is typically a paragraph long.

It consists of

  • A restated thesis statement
  • Summary of the main points
  • The broader implications of the thesis statement

Here’s an example of a well-structured conclusion:

The Wright Brothers’ invention of the airplane forever changed history by paving the way for modern aviation and countless aerospace advancements. Their persistence, innovation, and dedication to problem-solving led to the first successful powered flight in 1903, sparking a revolution in transportation that transformed the world. Today, air travel remains an integral part of our globalized society, highlighting the undeniable impact of the Wright Brothers’ contribution to human civilization.  

Let’s take a closer look at how to construct each of these sections.

A. Restate the thesis statement

Your conclusion should call back to your original argument or thesis statement.

However, this does not mean repeating the thesis statement as is. The essence of your argument should remain the same, but it should also be modified and evolved as per the information presented in your essay.

B. Summarize important points

A powerful conclusion not only lingers in the reader’s mind but also provokes thought. You can create a strong impression on the reader by highlighting the most impactful points of your essay.

C. State the greater implications

End your essay with the most powerful and impactful part: the larger perspective. This can‌ include a question you’d like to leave the reader with, the broader implications and impact of your thesis statement, or the long-term, lingering effects of your experience. 

Make sure to include no new evidence or arguments, or to undermine your findings in any way.

7. Review your essay

Knowing how to write an essay is just one part of essay writing. Properly reviewing and editing your essay is just as important. Make sure to spend enough time going over your essay and adding any bits of information that you’ve missed. 

This is also a good time to make minor structural changes in your essay.

8. Thoroughly proofread your essay

After making the necessary structural changes, recheck your essay word by word. It is important to not only correct major grammatical and spelling errors but also minor errors regarding the phrasing or tone of voice.

You can either choose to do this by yourself, ask a friend for assistance, or hire an essay proofreading service to go over your writing. To construct a fool-proof, error-free essay, it is helpful to have a trained pair of eyes go over it. Professional proofreaders can spot errors that are not visible to most people and set the right tone for your essay.

Students facing the college application process typically dread one component: the Common App essay. 

Students are presented with six essay prompts, as well as a seventh option, which is “topic of your choice.” Students therefore have limitless possibilities for this essay which will be carefully reviewed by each college to which the student applies.

How to Write an Essay Outline | Guidelines & Examples

An essay outline is a way of planning the structure of your essay before you start writing. It involves writing quick summary sentences or phrases for every point you will cover in each paragraph , giving you a picture of how your argument will unfold.

At the stage where you’re writing an essay outline, your ideas are probably still not fully formed. You should know your topic  and have already done some preliminary research to find relevant sources , but now you need to shape your ideas into a structured argument.

Creating categories

Look over any information, quotes and ideas you’ve noted down from your research and consider the central point you want to make in the essay—this will be the basis of your thesis statement . Once you have an idea of your overall argument, you can begin to organize your material in a way that serves that argument.

Try to arrange your material into categories related to different aspects of your argument. If you’re writing about a literary text, you might group your ideas into themes; in a history essay, it might be several key trends or turning points from the period you’re discussing.

Three main themes or subjects is a common structure for essays. Depending on the length of the essay, you could split the themes into three body paragraphs, or three longer sections with several paragraphs covering each theme.

As you create the outline, look critically at your categories and points: Are any of them irrelevant or redundant? Make sure every topic you cover is clearly related to your thesis statement.

Order of information

When you have your material organized into several categories, consider what order they should appear in.

Your essay will always begin and end with an introduction and conclusion , but the organization of the body is up to you.

Consider these questions to order your material:

  • Is there an obvious starting point for your argument?
  • Is there one subject that provides an easy transition into another?
  • Do some points need to be set up by discussing other points first?

Expository essay outline

This is the outline for an expository essay describing how the invention of the printing press affected life and politics in Europe.

The paragraphs are still summarized in short phrases here, but individual points are described with full sentences.

  • Claim that the printing press marks the end of the Middle Ages.
  • Provide background on the low levels of literacy before the printing press.
  • Present the thesis statement: The invention of the printing press increased circulation of information in Europe, paving the way for the Reformation.
  • Discuss the very high levels of illiteracy in medieval Europe.
  • Describe how literacy and thus knowledge and education were mainly the domain of religious and political elites.
  • Indicate how this discouraged political and religious change.
  • Describe the invention of the printing press in 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg.
  • Show the implications of the new technology for book production.

You will sometimes be asked to hand in an essay outline before you start writing your essay . Your supervisor wants to see that you have a clear idea of your structure so that writing will go smoothly.

Even when you do not have to hand it in, writing an essay outline is an important part of the writing process . It’s a good idea to write one (as informally as you like) to clarify your structure for yourself whenever you are working on an essay.

If you have to hand in your essay outline , you may be given specific guidelines stating whether you have to use full sentences. If you’re not sure, ask your supervisor.

When writing an essay outline for yourself, the choice is yours. Some students find it helpful to write out their ideas in full sentences, while others prefer to summarize them in short phrases.

You should try to follow your outline as you write your essay . However, if your ideas change or it becomes clear that your structure could be better, it’s okay to depart from your essay outline . Just make sure you know why you’re doing so.

All Hail Farro, Queen of the Make-Ahead Salad

This colorful grain salad is laced with juicy stone fruit and milky burrata cheese.

Of all the grains you can use for salads, farro is the absolute queen. It is elegant, chewy and inherently complex, and that’s before you add any seasonings. It’s also simple and quick to cook, needing about 20 minutes, and the nubby grains stay separate rather than clumping like barley or couscous.

There was a time when farro was a seldom seen in North America, a rarity found mostly in gourmet shops and specialty Italian markets, but now it can be found in supermarkets rubbing shoulders with the quinoa and bulgur, and not a bit less regal for it.

All of this means that you can stop reserving your farro salads for parties, and put them into regular rotation. Healthful, hearty and ripe for variation, the farro salad is ready for weeknight prime time.

Recipe: Herby Farro Salad With Stone Fruit and Burrata

In this simple recipe, a colorful jumble of sliced stone fruit and herbs makes for an especially jubilant presentation. You can use any stone fruit you have, pristine or not; all of those wilting, weeping, less-than-perfect specimens are magnanimously invited to join the bowl.

Actually, let’s face it, the softer and gushier the better, because that tangy fruit nectar gives the dressing a sweet-tart depth. To bring out the most juice, the fruit is briefly marinated in lemon juice, salt and a pinch of sugar, which you can do while the farro cooks.

Then dress the grains immediately after draining so the warm farro can absorb as much flavor as possible, and fold in the fruit along with a handful of herbs for freshness and zip. Once assembled, the salad can sit for hours with no ill effects, making it perfect for picnics, potlucks or lunch at your desk the next day.

There is one more element that I sometimes like to add to this salad, which raises it from a side dish to a light summer meal. In the center of the farro, almost like an egg in a nest, I place a milky ball of burrata drizzled with more of the stone fruit juice, some good olive oil and a sprinkle of flaky salt. The burrata adds richness to the mix, and provides a mellow contrast to the lemony fruit. But in the end, a stately farro salad doesn’t really need that — or anything extra — to shine and to reign.

Breaking barriers with the pen: Essay contest winners honored at RBI WS

Softball is more than just a game for Jailyn Latour. It’s her escape -- an outlet from everything to get away from the stressors in her everyday life. It’s not just a sport, it gives her courage. Similarly, baseball gives Zion Oliver and Ryan Shepard valor to find mentors, cope with loss and become the best versions of themselves.

They found bravery in their respective sports and used it to share their stories through the Breaking Barriers essay contest. Their writing stood out among hundreds of entries, and they were chosen as winners at the Nike RBI World Series earlier this August.

“For all three of them, there was a tie in there that they wanted to be courageous and strong,” said David James, MLB’s vice president of baseball and softball development. “For a friend moving forward, or the experience that they had, is going to give them the courage to do the right thing moving forward.”

The Breaking Barriers essay contest was established in 1997 by Sharon Robinson, Jackie Robinson's daughter. Players must write an essay about how they have overcome adversity and focus on one of Robinson’s core principles that helped them: Courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, commitment and excellence.

The three winners -- one softball player and one baseball player from the junior and senior divisions -- were honored at the Nike RBI World Series at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, Fla.

“It's been a cornerstone of the RBI program ,” James said. “It gives our participants an opportunity to tell us what's going on in their life, both good and bad, but it's also a forum for them to understand that we're all similar, and we all face challenges.

“Sharon Robinson, Jackie's daughter, started the program, and it's an opportunity for these kids to sort of get it out and talk to their colleagues and the folks from Major League Baseball, so that they have a safe space -- simply put -- to sometimes get things off of their chest.”

Each player has their unique challenges but they share Jackie Robinson’s legacy of courage. Latour, Oliver and Shepard used that bravery to be vulnerable and participate in the contest.

In his essay, Shepard shared his story of loss and how it transformed him. The junior division winner decided to honor his friend -- who died in a car accident -- by using baseball to become the best version of himself.

“He called out in the essay that he’s living for his hero,” James said. “But he also acknowledged that everybody deals with hardships and obstacles in their path, but what matters is what you do moving forward. So he embraced the whole idea of this essay of using Jackie's values to assist them to get through the hard times.”

Oliver, the winner in the senior division, shared his experience growing up without a dad. He wrote about how baseball has helped him meet new friends and adults -- who have become his mentors and father figures.

“Integrity for him was a big thing too, in regards to the type of person that he was going to be and hopefully later on in life,” James said. “As he has kids of his own, he wants to have that sort of relationship that maybe he wished for when he was a kid.”

Latour’s essay stood out for its honesty and openness, according to James. She shared how softball has been her conduit for success in achieving her goals -- becoming a second-generation college athlete and starting her journey to be a doctor -- and a safe place to make mistakes with the support of her teammates and coaches.

“Being a part of the program has helped her become a better person,” said Meghan Hayes, manager of the Astros Youth Academy and Astros Foundation. “It's helped her gain friends and teammates that I feel have shaped her to be the person she is. The perseverance that she's shown, like just from coming off an injury last year, almost making that team, to stepping it up and starting for our team this year, really shows how much she has grown.”

Their stories were shared during the RBI World Series with all participants and coaches. Not only were their voices heard, but it also showed others -- whether they participated in the contest or not -- the RBI community supports them through the challenges they face.

“I think that hearing the stories of others sort of strengthens them,” James said. “So it is bigger than baseball and softball. It's about Major League citizens, and these kids, these coaches, have bought into it and I think it just benefits the program. It is bigger than just what we do on the field.”
