I dedicate my success to my mother

When you are in school, one of your first essays you learn to write is about ‘My Mother’. So it is quite interesting that this Mother’s Day, as a grown up and a successful woman I have been asked to revisit this essay.

My earliest memories of my mother are those of a very strong, independent woman who was quiet and kind. She was a working mother who very skilfully juggled career, family and other responsibilities. I never once heard her complain or breakdown despite having three children and a full schedule. This is truly remarkable in a time when we spend so much time talking about work-life balance and the inability to cope with multiple responsibilities.

She had a long teaching career where she influenced many young impressionable children with her value system. Some of her words of wisdom are – “Do not beg, borrow or steal”, “Aim for the stars, at least you might end up on the top of the coconut tree”, “There is no substitute for hard work”. I have remembered these words and lived by them.

Having a mother who is a teacher is an advantage. We were encouraged to be curious, had access to libraries and therefore an unlimited supply of books which supported my love for reading.

Academically we were given freedom to find our own paths. I don’t recall ever being pressured to take up any particular stream of education. We felt totally supported in the process and encouraged to advance our knowledge in a variety of different areas. Once again this is remarkable given the competitive environment where parents and children lose their sleep over their children’s achievements and are never satisfied even if one has achieved 90%. I am sure her students too benefited from her empathy, kindness and value system.

I love baking and sugar craft. These are skills I picked up from my mother who is an exceptional cook. I recall when I was growing up, every Saturday was baking day and we would have a treat in store. Despite her busy schedule, she used to conduct cooking and baking classes over the weekends. Even today, my cousins and aunts all over the world call her for recipes or tips for traditional sweets during Christmas.

My mother has worked tirelessly over the years to hold the family together, put us through college and give us a quality life. So when I joined the airline business, I decided to travel with her. My first back packing trip to Europe was with my mother. We went to Israel, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium and the UK. This was the first of many trips which has resulted in my mother catching my travel bug.

I still remember this first mega backpacking trip. We were on staff tickets which meant that our seats were not guaranteed till all passengers had been checked in. I was nervous and afraid but having my mother by my side was a calming influence. She was and still is a very easy travel companion, much better than most of my friends. She is game for anything – museums, churches, new experiences, new food, off the beaten path travels. She allows me to plan and happily tags along but is always reassuring when things go wrong. Together, we have been to several countries and over the years she has learned to navigate the airline staff travel system which can be a bit nerve racking at times especially when flights are full.

One of my mother’s strengths is resilience in the face of adversity. Despite tough challenges on the home front, she never gave up. I am sure it must have been a lonely journey for her during the time but she always found a solution. Today this particular trait is considered to be one of the most important ones that global leader must have. Her three children, thankfully, seem to have inherited this from her.

Today, she is retired and spends her time between her children and two grandchildren who live around the world. She is still the strong quiet force that propels us forward and her kindness, empathy and love is perpetuated in instilling the values in the next generation.

Throughout my career – when I joined the airlines as a flight attendant, rose up the ladder taking up various positions, quitting an established airline to join a start up airline, making it to Vice President of an important department and then finally making a career switch to start Safecity – she has supported me, encouraged me and egged me on. She is my biggest cheerleader and I know that even if I hit rock bottom, she will pick me up.

They say that “Behind every successful woman is a tribe of other successful women who have her back” and my mother has been a large part of that force. I gratefully dedicate my success to my mother Freda D’Silva.

She goes to the park with us every day and we play different sports, I love playing with my mother. She respects our grandfather and grandmother and always taught us to respect our elders. 

She also cooks delicious food we all love eating food made by her hand. She tells us amazing stories of when we go to bed I love listening to the stories by her. She always encourages us to learn and grow making sure we have no problems, She takes care of every member of our family.

She is a lovely and selfless woman, she gives us every single thing but never demands anything in return. She takes care of every family member kind-heartedly which inspires me to study hard and become successful in my life to do the same as she did with us, in the future.

Her Strengths

Although My mother is not so physically strong, she has the willingness to face every problem of her life and our family with great determination, she always motivates us to try harder to improve our studies, skills, and talents to achieve our goals. She is a consistent source of motivation that teaches me to never lose hope in the difficult situations of life and try again and again to achieve success.

My mother is my biggest support system and motivation to study harder and earn a good life for my family.

I wasn’t anxious about back-to-school because of my kids. It was the other moms

As the summer drew to a close, I felt the usual anxiety rise up inside me. And it wasn’t just because of the whirlwind of back-to-school duties I’d now have to complete. It was because I’d be around those have-it-all-together perfect mom types.  

I’d been free of them for two glorious months, and it was heaven.

I knew I shouldn’t judge them. It was hard enough being judged by society for everything we did: working, not working, helicopter, free-range — our every move evaluated with such intensity. It was maddening. I hated myself for resenting them. But I did.

It wasn’t just their sideways glances and passive-aggressive comments directed at me because I’d missed a school email about pajama day or a donation for the PTA that made me feel like I was failing as a mother. Nor the times I’d run into them at the bus stop with their sparkling white teeth holding a container of cut-up fruits for the teacher’s breakfast, flanked by their kids in matching outfits, their hair done like they just stepped out of a salon.

No, it was their very existence. The way they made it look so easy, so natural, so right. While I struggled to do it all — to be a good mother, wife, daughter, friend … but kept falling short of every single one. I couldn’t seem to do anything the way I thought I should. 

I savored those summer days where I didn’t have to walk into school with my hair in its usual messy bun and Target yoga pants I’d never used for actual yoga, only to run into one of them carrying homemade gluten and nut-free vegan cupcakes for my son’s class.

As the days to the start of school crept closer, my panic set in. I knew I’d have to shake myself out of my schedule-free daze and deal with my to-do list, which was getting longer than a CVS receipt. And my inbox, which was filling up each day with more forms, notes, reminders and obligations.  

Despite my efforts to will it not to, the first day of school inevitably arrived. And as much as I tried to prepare for the stress and stave off my insecurities, they still came flooding back.  

I rushed the kids out of bed and hustled them to the bus stop. That’s when I saw the first one. She was standing there in her full glory, looking fresh and ready, with her kids by her side. I smiled and waved, trying my best to push down the green monster raging inside me. She had everything organized and was happy to chat with me about it.  

“Hey, how was your summer? By the way, I signed up to be class mom for our kids’ class. Have you signed up for any of the volunteer stuff yet?” she asked.  

“Umm, not … yet. I’ll have to take a look,” I said, as I noticed that my kids were chasing each other up and down the sidewalk. “Guys, stop. The bus is almost here,” I said through clenched teeth, embarrassed that they weren’t as well behaved as her children, who were quietly standing by her side.

She shared that her son and daughter had been reading high school level books for fun and doing math problems during dinner. I’m pretty sure my kids hadn’t done a single math problem the whole summer. 

I forced a smile as I tried to push down the bile rising in my throat. As I looked at her kids’ faces and their adorable new outfits with equally sweet backpacks, she’s a good  mom, you’re a bad mom , kept swirling in my head.

Watching her put her arm around her daughter as she looked down the street to see where the bus was, I thought back to our morning. I’d woken up later than I’d planned, yelled up the stairs for the kids to get ready, then stuffed string cheese, crackers and might-have-expired granola bars into their banged-up lunch boxes. Once they finally got downstairs with their mismatched outfits, I rushed them out the door, desperately hoping we wouldn’t miss the bus. 

When it finally came, Good Mom bent down, brushed a stray hair behind her daughter’s ear and tightened her son’s shoelace before hugging and kissing them both goodbye. Distracted by the picture-perfect scene, I missed my own kids getting on the bus. No hug, no kiss, no tightening of shoelaces. Just the smoke from the exhaust as the bus left.

Good Mom and I stood and waved to our kids as we watched the bus get smaller down the tree-lined road. Then she bid me farewell as she dashed off to her SoulCycle class in a spanking new matching Lululemon outfit. I waved, boiling inside, hating myself for being so jealous of her … everything. 

After the parents dispersed, I sat on the worn wooden bench under the maple tree, my body still buzzing with the adrenaline of the first morning routine and my bad mom baggage. 

Looking down the empty street, with only the rumbling of an engine in the distance and the chirping of birds overhead, something inside of me snapped. I slumped over, holding my head in my hands as a sound came out of my mouth I didn’t recognize. It was like a desperate pain leaving my body, a combination of a cry and a whimper. I felt tears filling my eyes.

What are you doing , I thought. Why do I let myself get twisted up in the senseless comparisons year after year? Why do side glances of other moms and their seemingly perfect parenting break me so easily? 

“Stop it.” The words came tumbling out. I said them again, this time louder. “Stop it!” I could hear my breath going in and out of my nose as I looked around to make sure I was still alone.

My body felt like an empty sack, worn and depleted. Stop doing to yourself and to those other moms what society does to so many mothers, I told myself. Judging, comparing, scrutinizing. It’s none of your business what they do or don’t do. You don’t know their life, their pain, their stories. You have no idea what they’re going through behind those shiny surfaces. 

Then it hit me, like a hard snowball to the face. Instead of thinking about my kids, I’d spent the entire morning twisted up in my own dark self-doubts. I’d lost those precious moments with them — the excitement of the first day of school, their joy as they ran around with each other, their scramble to find their favorite seats when they got on the bus.

Did they look at me through the window to give me a toothy smile? I was so distracted by my obsession with another woman’s life that I missed my own children’s sweet faces as they left me to go out into the world. And this wasn’t the only moment I’d lost. If I was being honest, I’d wasted countless hours, days and weeks comparing myself to other moms, hate-scrolling through snapshots of their seemingly happy lives on social media, and being hurt by slights that shouldn’t have taken my attention away from my family. 

As I watched the leaves swaying with the light morning gust, tears rolled down my face as my sorrow rose inside me. 

I said it one more time, but now in a whisper. “Stop it.”

Walking home in my pajama pants and stretched out T-shirt, I felt a heaviness in my chest and a mountain of regret I didn’t know how to digest.

Then as soon as I opened the front door and saw the line of little shoes tattered from running around in parks and playgrounds, I knew things would have to change. 

So, I made myself a promise. That I would find a way to be kinder to myself and other women as we navigated this complicated, overwhelming and beautiful thing called motherhood. That no matter how hard things got, I’d fight against my feelings of inadequacy and not-good-enoughness, and instead of giving in to those doubts, I’d fill those moments with grace, for myself and others.

I can’t say that I’ve kept that promise every day, but I have kept it more days than not. And that’s something good. Something that’s helped me find peace, gratitude and love as I continue to navigate the incredible privilege of being a mother.

A Florida mother cleaning up garbage after Hurricane Debby spotted a message in a bottle from nearly 80 years ago that had a bullet casing inside — and potentially traveled more than 800 miles.

The World War II-era note had US Navy letterhead from the Amphibious Training Base located in Little Creek, Va., dated March 4, 1945, and was discovered by Suzanne Flament-Smith this week on the western shore of Tampa Bay.

Flament-Smith told WTSP she couldn’t bear all the trash along Bayshore Boulevard in the city of Safety Harbor following a storm surge from the hurricane when she decided to start picking up litter Wednesday.

“On my third bag, as I was filling it up, I noticed a glass bottle, and you could see the writing, the note and the scripture,” she said. “I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, I think I just found a message in a bottle.’”

The bottle had the bullet casing, a few shells, sand and a “mini cannon ball” in it, the station reported.

It also included the letter that was written out in cursive on an old piece of paper, though a good chunk of the words were faded.

“My kids are like, ‘What kind of writing is that?’ I’m like, ‘It’s cursive,’” she told WAVY .

The note appears to be addressed to a friend named Lee with the writing explaining their plans to go to radio school, Flament-Smith said.

The base where the letter might have come from is now named Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story.

The base was established during the Second World War to prepare amphibious forces like the soldiers who landed on the beaches of Normandy during D-Day, Navy public affairs officer April Phillips told WTSP.

The Navy told the station Friday that it can’t authenticate the letter because it doesn’t have last names, but it is possible the letterhead on the note existed in March 1945.

Still, Flament-Smith is hoping the mystery around the letter is unraveled.

 “Well, I try to tell my kids if you do good, good things happen,” she reportedly said.

“There is a sense of excitement, and also like a story, a story that hopefully we can find its home.”

My Mother’s Favorite Music Taught Me How to Live Courageously

In the thick of the pandemic I moved back to El Paso, Texas, on the U.S.-Mexico border, where I’d been raised, for what I thought would be a temporary stay. But then the desert whispered. After years away, my body hungered for the quiet wisdom of this land.

I’d changed since I’d left. In New York and Boston, I had lived openly as a queer woman. I found myself being more discreet around my family in El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, where I was born. There are plenty of queer people living full, open lives here. But none of them are in my family.

As soon as Covid restrictions eased, I began crossing the border into Ciudad Juárez by foot to sing karaoke with my queer friends whenever I needed release. My favorite songs to sing were those by the iconic Mexican showman Juan Gabriel. I loved reveling in my queerness and my culture all at once. I longed for that liberation around my family.

Music has the power to help us understand ourselves. Juan Gabriel’s tender femininity was a radical quality in a Mexico entrenched in machismo and homophobia. He managed to embody his Mexican roots while also exuding queerness — two ideas that were for so long at odds in our culture.

I inherited my love for Juanga, as he was affectionately called, from my mother. He was her first crush and her ultimate hometown hero. On those nights in Juárez when I’d belt out his songs the question would surface: If my Mexican mother could accept him as he was, could she accept me, too?

When I explain Juan Gabriel to American friends, I tell them to imagine an artist as revolutionary, innovative and singular as Prince and as peacockish, prolific (he composed more than 1,800 songs!) and canonized as Elton John. Someone once told me no one has made Latin Americans cry, laugh and dance more.

What Kind of Mother Buys a Baby?

I don’t remember if it was my husband or therapist who first floated the idea of surrogacy, but I do remember my response—an unequivocal no . I was 35 years old, healthy, financially secure, and married to a healthy, financially secure, and emotionally supportive partner. In the 12 years we’d been together, I’d never once tried to get pregnant, and I should at least have to try. Surrogacy was for those who had struggled for years with infertility, who had gone through countless rounds of IVF and failed implantations. Surrogacy was for those who had suffered. Who did I think I was to treat someone’s last resort as my first?

Then I did suffer, though it had nothing to do with my fertility.

I had just moved into my new house, and a friend asked for pictures. I stepped onto the fireplace hearth in the living room to get a better vantage. When I stepped off, I rolled my ankle and went down hard. I heard what sounded like a twig snapping.

It was a “good” break, in the fifth metatarsal bone of my foot, one that would heal cleanly in eight weeks. For that time I’d need to use crutches and wear a boot. I’d gotten a finger caught in a car door as a kid, but other than that, I’d never broken anything before. When I began experiencing pain in my calf, I tried to reassure myself that it was soreness from the boot. The dull ache flared hot at the lightest touch, not intolerable but also different than anything I’d felt before.

I emailed the doctor and described my symptoms. He emailed back that he could get me fitted for a different boot. “It’s super-unlikely,” he added, “but when we have calf pain in any immobilization, blood clots enter our thought process.”

I wrote back asking how I could schedule an appointment for the new boot, adding that I was on the pill so blood clots were always somewhat of a concern. He reiterated that it would be “really, really uncommon.”

I almost left it there. In the months that followed, I would obsess over the phantom version of myself who was too uncomfortable to nudge one last time, who closed her computer and carried on with her day. Who did not go to the hospital for an ultrasound, where the tech discovered a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in her right calf. Who died because she hadn’t wanted to be pushy.

When I was little, my parents called me the what if kid. What if lightning strikes our house? What if there’s flesh-eating bacteria in that water? What if this bump on my shin isn’t a calcium deposit like my coach said but bone cancer? The subtext, never uttered out loud for fear it could manifest as true, what if I die?

At checkups, the nurses would remark on my sky-high blood pressure. White coat syndrome , I would brush off with a fake laugh and a pounding pulse. Various doctors over the years recommended antidepressants, but I simply didn’t identify as a person who needed medication. Panic was a room I was familiar with, sure, but I had always managed to find the door, slip back into regular life undetected by my husband, friends, the people who knew me as a successful novelist and screenwriter. But I could not escape the thought that it was my aggressive vigilance alone that had saved my life, that the only way to survive was to keep watch from within my four walls of terror.

I ended up back in my doctor’s office, worried the blood thinners I was taking to dissolve the clot had caused a brain bleed. My doctor kindly went through an assessment, then stepped back and stared at me with concern. I can see you’re very stressed , he said so gently I burst into tears. I remember the exam room table paper disintegrating beneath my sweating palms as I realized that what had been a hairline crack was now structural. Everyone could see I was buckling.

I scheduled a psychological assessment and learned that I wasn’t just dealing with anxiety and panic, but mild depression and OCD too. I had always associated OCD with repetitive behaviors, but obsessiveness also fuels anxiety, making people feel hounded by their worst thoughts and fears. Mine convinced me I would be the unicorn written about in medical texts who had a fatal reaction to Lexapro, so much so that I took my first dose in a public place, thinking, if I go into anaphylactic shock, at least someone will be around to call 911 .

That was a Friday morning. By Monday, it was as though a velvet curtain had dropped between me and all my chronic what ifs . Like actors assuming their places before the start of a play, I knew they were back there, but I could no longer see or hear them. I could stop white knuckling my way through the day. I could relax . It was a remarkable kind of emancipation.

One that, in my mind, pregnancy expressly jeopardized.

At 35, most of my friends had carried children. One or two of them had enjoyed pregnancy, but the vast majority told me horror stories about how awful they felt and how traumatized they were by childbirth. And those were just the examples where no one died.

Pregnancy has been politicized for the entirety of my child-bearing years. Obsessive hypochondriacs like me tend to catalog grim statistics—years before I ever considered having children, I’d already logged that the U.S. has the highest maternal death rate of any first world nation, that black women are three times more likely to die in childbirth than white women, that the rate is increasing nearly twice as fast in states with abortion bans. Pregnant women are five times more likely to develop a blood clot ; I wasn’t about to go nine long months at this elevated risk without the Lexapro to keep the curtains down on my demons. It is generally not recommended to take Lexapro while pregnant ( unless the benefits outweigh the risks —an impossible calculus), and although there are other antidepressants you can more confidently take, I felt a fiery kind of indignation at the idea of playing roulette with my mental health, a rage I now know was masking the familiar contours of an earlier trauma.

As I’ve written about before, I am a survivor of a sexual assault that was packaged to my high school classmates as something I willingly participated in, someone who deserved the scorn and social ostracization that followed. I endured that period of my life with as much stoicism as I could muster. And I could not shake the sense that pregnancy would be another violation of my body and mind that I would have to grin and bear as well. And for what? Motherhood had been billed as a thankless slog that would cannibalize my career and rot my identity. I was an editor at Cosmopolitan when Anne Marie Slaughter’s “Why Women Still Can’t Have it All” made the cover of The Atlantic and the article hit our hyper-pink-feminist offices like a lightning rod. I was not just the target audience for the lean-in, girlbossing era that followed, but part architect too. I trawled Pew statistics to anchor pitches about why more young, ambitious women were putting off having children and crowdsourced my friends for anecdotes that proved there are so many more ways to be a bad mother than a good father. It was an act of confirmation bias in its purest form.

But for all the contempt I had manufactured around motherhood, I could not bring myself to reject the choice to have kids outright.

In theory, I knew not everyone had to have the same experiences in life. But I had only understood it in the binary sense—either you are a person who wants children or a person who does not . As I worked through my ambivalent feelings in therapy, I had a profound revelation that may seem laughably rudimentary to those who have always been clear-eyed in this arena. I realized that I got to have a say in how I wanted to parent, that I was not destined to become martyred by motherhood just because a Pew statistic about unequal child-rearing responsibilities between men and women said I was. I had an egalitarian partner. I had developed self-awareness and found deeper sources of compassion and empathy that I wanted to share, thanks to the work I continue to do on myself in therapy. Most of all, I had the means to afford surrogacy. I had purposed the pain of my assault into a best-selling novel, and there was something harmonious about using my royalty money to protect myself from what I viewed as another trauma.

The decision did not happen overnight. I’d seen famous women who chose surrogacy take a battering online. Their Instagram birth announcements were littered with accusations that they’d bought a baby to preserve their bodies, to offload the hard work to someone else. Surrogacy when you didn’t need surrogacy was a vain and selfish choice made by vain and selfish women, and as someone who has always struggled to see herself as a good person, my ear was sharply tuned to the criticism. It took nearly a year for me to come around to the idea that the extraordinary women who sign up to be surrogates do so because, unlike me, they view pregnancy as a positive experience. I was not a bad person for not wanting to feel afraid again.

At 36, I completed a round of IVF. My hands trembled every time I gave myself a shot. But I made it through, and my husband and I ended up with four healthy embryos. While the surrogacy agency assumed we wanted to start the search immediately, I had other plans. I had adapted my first novel into a screenplay, and production was finally moving forward after seven years of rewrites and attempts to cast the lead. I wanted to feel free and young and unencumbered for every minute of this dream coming true , which entailed being on set for four months, flying to New York for the year of post that followed, picking out exciting outfits to wear for all the press opportunities in the month leading up to the premiere. This was another dignity that surrogacy restored for me. I got to say when. Finally, I started to see my choice not as the easy way out but the most loving gift I could give my 15-year-old self, whose agency and boundaries had been devastated before she was old enough to drive.

When we finally pulled the trigger on the surrogate search, our liaison at the agency spoke to me as though I were a desperate woman broken down by years of trying and waiting for a baby. Every time she called, she would assure me in soft tones that she knew how anxious I was, how long I’d wanted this. I knew she meant well, and so I didn’t correct her. I did not know how to explain the incongruity of my decision, that I came around to surrogacy not in my darkest hour but in the sunlight. What kind of woman would I be if I told her that actually, I’d never felt better?

We call people who stray from the bounds of the traditional family structure childless cat ladies who are miserable with the choices they’ve made. But the only thing that would have made me miserable is the inability to make this choice. Now that my daughter is here, now that I catch myself cooing to her that she’s my favorite person in the whole entire world, I know what kind of woman I am. I’m the kind who puts her life jacket on before I put on anyone else’s.

I’m the kind who will teach her daughter she is a good person for taking care of herself first.
