She teaches us Maths, the subject I fear the most. I used to be extremely scared of it because I always failed to solve those tough problems. But my class teacher is so kind to me that she helps me daily to get rid of my fears in Maths. She teaches me the sums in the easiest way and also inspires me to practice more.

She speaks sweetly and is adorable. The best part of my teacher is that she never scolds me when I get a sum incorrect. With lots of patience, she points out the wrong and corrects me. For her, I am confident in solving all the sums in the book. I am grateful to her for the unconditional support she has given me.

For me, being a teacher is one of the greatest blessings on earth. Because God cannot be everywhere, so he has created teachers as their replicas. I myself aspire to be a teacher one day so that I can serve the children with my wisdom and knowledge. Teachers enable their students to rise higher in their lives fearlessly and be confident in their approach. To me, my parents are my greatest teachers. It was such a relief to me and I just touched his feet expressing my heartfelt gratefulness. ‘I will return the money as soon as I receive the money order, Sir’ – I said so and immediately Mr. Vaidya said “No, boy, don’t worry, you’ve been such a good student. You must do well at the examination your bright result would be the return of my money work hard and top the list” and Mr. Vaidya once again patted my back. How deeply touched did I feel.

It is not that Mr. Vaidya felt concerned about me. He has the concern for all his students. He takes personal interest in solving even the family problems of his students. The father of a student suffered an accident and had to be admitted to the hospital. Mr. Vaidya came to know of it and he was there at the hospital to visit the patient and make anxious enquiries about his health. One of his old students was the surgeon at the hospital. He particularly contacted him to ask him to look after the father of the boy with special care. Mr. Vaidya’s old student, the surgeon had all the regard for his old teacher – his respected teacher.

If while waiting for the bus at the bus-stand, it began to drizzle, Mr. Vaidya would open up his umbrella and ask students standing there to come under it. How much concern he has for the welfare of his students really a great man Mr. Vaidya is.

It was not only this human side of his that made Mr. Vaidya a favourite teacher. As a teacher of his subject, he was the best. He knew his subject so well and more than that the way he explained the difficult topics in such a lucid way, which made him such a respected teacher. He would never be late in coming to his class and would straightway begin with the lesson of the day – he may cut some pleasant jokes, sometimes indulge in telling unwanted stories. He never wasted any minute of his and students listened to him in rapt attention. ent but would never .

It was all that respect for him which made students so attentive and disciplined. He never had any problem with that. Incidentally this was my last year at the school and Mr. Vaidya was also retiring the same year. At the close of the session after the final examinations were over, a grand farewell party was arranged by the students and teachers. The Principal, in his speech paid glowing tributes to Mr. Vaidya for the qualities of his head and heart. Students who came to speak their voice choked with emotion; words failed them and at the close of the function there was such a rush of students coming up to touch Mr. Vaidya’s feet to receive his blessings. Mr. Vaidya himself was full of emotion on this last day of his at the school which he had served with such a dedication and devotions.

What Makes an Inspiring and Passionate Teacher?

In an Education Week Opinion Blog last year, Raj Tawney wrote a powerful story about a teacher that changed his life after many years of feeling like an outsider looking in. Tawney said, “In 10th grade, however, my English teacher, L. John Friia, saw me for the first time. He was cool and easy to talk to. I felt comfortable opening up to him and expressing my hobbies and interests.”

What we know is that every student deserves to be seen and heard, but it doesn’t happen as often as we think. In surveys of over 1 million students, Russ Quaglia found that 54 percent of students in grades 6-12 stated that their teachers do not know their names. And even if that’s not the case, it doesn’t matter because the perspective for the student is much more impactful than the possible reality.

Odetola (1972) found that students feel alienated from school for two reasons. One, they don’t have an emotional connection to their teacher or school. Two, they don’t feel like they have a voice in their own learning.

Additionally, in a meta-analysis, John Hattie , found that the greatest influence on student progression in learning is having highly expert, inspired, and passionate teachers and school leaders working together to maximize the effect of their teaching on all students in their care.

We both (Michael and Peter)have had teachers and coaches who were highly expert, inspired, and passionate. Public rhetoric about teachers and education is not as positive as it should be, and we believe like Tawney, that we should all share stories of those teachers who have had an enormous impact on us. Michael shares a story about one of his most influential educators. Her name is Mrs. Roche.

It started with reading a book a week.

On the first day of 4th grade, Mrs. Roche challenged the class to read a book a week. She walked us to the library where the librarian reinforced this challenge. I distinctly remember being walked over to the C section and being asked by Mrs. Roche, “Have you read any books by Beverly Cleary? She’s one of my favorite authors.” I had not read any of Cleary’s work, but within a few months, I would have read the entire Beverly Cleary section. On this day, I picked out Henry Huggins. It was the first time I saw myself as a reader and a learner.

Do you remember moments like that? Moments where you actually saw yourself as a reader and a learner? Not because someone wanted you to compliantly follow along with a lesson but because they inspired you?

She loves you.

I remember my mom meeting Mrs. Roche for the first time during student conferences. When my mom arrived home from the conference, I couldn’t wait to hear what Mrs. Roche might have said about me. I was the third of three boys in my family. What Mrs. Roche said to my mom changed the trajectory of my life.

“Michael,” my mom said, “I have been to many conferences, but I have never had a teacher tell me this.” My shoulders slouched for a moment, and I became nervous. Luckily, my mom quickly continued. “Michael, Mrs. Roche loves you. Never in all of my years of going to conferences have I had a teacher tell me this. This is going to be a very special year of learning for you.”

You see, growing up, my parents both told me that being a teacher was the most noble of professions, so the fact that my teacher saw something in me that I hadn’t recognized in myself yet was a profound moment for me. It’s why I remember it so vividly to this day.

It is OK to show emotions.

The reading of the classroom chapter book always occurred after lunch recess. Mrs. Roche had picked Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. Along with my classmates, I could not wait for this time each day. Later on as a teacher, it was those moments I looked forward to as well.

As the book was coming to a close, Mrs. Roche put the book in her lap and said, “I’ve read this book each year to my students, and at this point in the story, I usually cry. I will most likely cry this time as well. I don’t want you to focus on my tears, but I want you to really listen to the story with your head and heart. I really want you to hear the words that Wilson Rawls wrote. You may find yourself tearing up, and that’s OK.” I had never had someone share with me that it was OK to show emotions.

She looks at me.

Raised in a small community outside of Seattle, I have many lifelong friends who also had Mrs. Roche as their 4th grade teacher. Each person still shares similar stories of how she would “look” at you when talking.

She did not look above or below you or watch something else going on in the room, she looked at you. She was fully present for you. This was behavior and feeling that I have tried to emulate for students in my classrooms as a teacher, then as a principal and superintendent.

Mrs. Roche believed in her students’ ability to feel and be learners. Her passion and expertise guided this group of 4th graders in such a manner that 50 years later I can remember the learning that occurred during that school year. Mrs. Roche was a model and an example of what s an expert, inspired, and passionate teacher is like. US vice presidential pick Tim Walz was once my high school teacher

Last week, I found myself engrossed in hours of viral videos featuring Tim Walz. Like countless others, I was captivated by his message and plain-spoken communication style. But unlike the millions hearing him speak for the first time, I had experienced this before –two decades ago at Mankato West High School in Minnesota .

Back then, he was my teacher. But the man US Vice President Kamala Harris named as her running mate on Tuesday has not changed one bit.

Walz and I lived in Mankato, a plain, suburban town of 50,000 people surrounded by corn fields. Our district is home to one of the best hospitals in the world, the Mayo Clinic, and the Jolly Green Giant canned vegetable company. The next city over produces the world’s supply of Spam.

Until our district voted for Donald Trump by 10 points in 2022, I had never been sure if my home town was conservative or progressive; it was the kind of place where it was considered rude to talk about politics or religion with strangers.

Mr Walz, as we knew him, was everyone’s favourite teacher. He was a “cool teacher”, but not young or trendy enough to be the coolest teacher. He was professional, but also a human.

As a 15-year-old girl in 2004, I walked into his classroom among 30 other students, sceptical about how geography, history and social studies would help me. But he encouraged us to listen and ask questions.

One of his favourite tasks was to have us read the same news story from three different newspapers each week. He would ask us things like: “What is the historical context of this story? How does each newspaper frame this story differently, and why do you think that is?”

Instead of talking at us, his classes were always a reflective conversation. His engaging style persuaded me to become a better citizen, and even now, as a senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne, his teaching still challenges me to think and learn in everything I do.

His wife, Gwen, was also an English teacher in the same school. Watching him now, after 18 years in the tough and often inauthentic world of politics, I am in awe at how he is still the same person.

In 2006, he ran a grassroots campaign to become our district’s congressman with volunteers who included many former students and some of my friends. He beat a Republican incumbent millionaire. After he was elected, I was shocked. Here he was, on a teacher’s salary of probably $US40,000, beating one of the handful of millionaires in our area. Surely, this would be the peak of his political career. But then I watched on again as he became the governor of Minnesota, and now the Democrats’ VP candidate. He beat the odds then, and now he is doing it again.

As governor of Minnesota, Walz championed a law providing free breakfasts and lunches to students, understanding the fundamental role of education and nourishment in a child’s life.

During his visit to Australia last November, he highlighted the shared challenge of affordable housing between our nations, using a simple yet profound litmus test: whether a public school teacher could afford a house.

And 20 years on from my days in his classroom, I can see that he continues to captivate audiences, even if they are substantially bigger. His teaching experience has honed his ability to engage with the disconnected and disaffected, a crucial skill in today’s polarised political climate.

He says issues like climate change can feel too overwhelming, and that is why people disengage. In true teacher style, he argues we need to break the issues down into something more achievable for people. His knack for simplifying something complex and making it relatable is a testament to his background and the fresh perspective it brings to politics.

While 26 former presidents have been lawyers (Walz is the first Democratic VP candidate since 1964 who did not attend law school), only five have taught at universities. Rarely has a high school teacher come so close to the Oval Office.

In a political landscape dominated by career politicians and lawyers, Walz’s candidacy offers a refreshing change. His years as a high school teacher bring a perspective to the table that emphasises engagement, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of societal challenges.

I feel so proud to see my high school teacher rise in political leadership. The person who taught me about US presidents in history class now has the chance to become a US vice president.

Does the alphabet song your kids sing sound new to you? Here's how the change helps them

Have your kids come home singing their ABCs to a familiar tune - but one that somehow sounds just a bit off? You're not imagining it: the alphabet song is changing.

The original song most of us grew up singing (and many of us probably still sing in our heads more often than we'd care to admit) was set to a sing-song melody with pauses between "G," "P," "S," "V" "X" and ended with "Y and Z." Of course, the song closed with the triumphant line, "Now I know my ABCs, next time won't you sing with me?"

The newer version, which has become increasingly common in American primary education, takes the same tune but restructures the phrasing, instead placing the pauses after "G," "N," "Q," "T," "W" and ending with "XYZ." The closing lines are also different, now sung, "Now I never will forget, how to say the alphabet."

The tweak is just enough to make you feel like you're listening in on a slightly parallel universe when you hear it; after all, the actual melody itself is the same.

The reason for the change seems fairly apparent to the average listener. There is no more rushing through the mess that was "LMNOP," which often came out sounding like nothing more than mush mouth. It also removes the "and" between Y and Z, eliminating another potential source of confusion.

As with anything time-honored and beloved tradition, however, some people are resistant to change

"Ugh, how dare you explain the extremely logical reason behind something from my childhood changing," joked one commenter under a TikTok video about the new version. "It’s better. I hate it," and "Ellemenohpee was my favorite letter tho," joked two others. "This version is clearly superior, even though my nostalgia doesn’t want me to admit it," said one comment with 27,000 likes.

Some didn't take the modification in stride so easily though, making arguments like, "I agree with you but didn’t all of us turn out fine knowing how to read and such with the original way of singing the alphabet?" and "I mean if all of us can get it why can’t these new kids get it?" Another commenter contended, "So you’re saying the newer generations couldn’t figure out what millions before them?"

While adults who have had the older version running through their minds since the age of 5 may have some trouble adjusting to the development, one first-grade teacher who focuses on literacy, and specifically on helping kids who struggle with it, explained to USA TODAY the developmental and pedagogical reasons behind what may seem like a silly update.

A clearer alphabet song may be a step toward improving literacy

One first-grade teacher, who goes by @teacherrachelsorsel on TikTok, said the change was made to address common confusion that often hindered some kids' understanding of the song.

"When kids struggle with something as 'simple' as the alphabet song, we know that these [reading] skills are going to be tough for them and those are foundational to be able to decode and read," she told USA TODAY.

Rachel specializes in structured literacy, literacy intervention and dyslexia, having clinched an honorable mention in the running for the Nessy Dyslexia International Science of Reading 2023 Teacher of the Year award.

"What research has found is that when kids are first learning to read, they have to develop two skills," she said. "One is called the alphabetic principle....the other skill is called phonological awareness."

These skills allow students to develop a fundamental understanding of letters and the fact they make sounds and spell words. They also enable kids to discern specific sounds in words.

If kids are getting tripped up into thinking "LMNOP" is just a jumble of sounds or the "and" in "Y and Z" is its own letter, it can hinder their ability to expand into basic reading skills.

"A lot of people on my videos comment, 'Oh, why don't you just enunciate?' And of course, we enunciated to make sure the kids understand what we're saying with our mouths," she said. "But it doesn't make a difference because their brain is not developed enough to notice the difference as much as we do as fluent, literate adults."

She also said people ask why teachers can't simply point to visuals of the letters while singing the song. While educators do want to connect visuals to sounds for kids, she explained, those aged around 3-5 who are learning the song do not yet have the neural networks to match the written letters to the sounds.

"To kids, those just look like squiggles," she said. "You have to develop that a lot more slowly than just showing 26 squiggles and saying sounds."

And while some people online have expressed incredulity or annoyance at the change, Rachel said she's had overwhelmingly positive experiences with parents and fellow teachers. Parents of her students often come to her with feedback that they learned something new about phonetics themselves, telling her that new songs and other lessons "make sense" even if it's not what they learned in school.

"You think of [the alphabet] so simply, everybody knows it, but there's actually a lot of stuff little kids' brains are doing when they're learning letters," she explained. "When they're struggling with something as 'simple' as the alphabet song, the whole journey to read is going to be really difficult."
