Student Funding

All admitted students to the BPH PhD program, including international students, are guaranteed full funding, which includes a stipend, as well as tuition and health insurance.

All grant aid that exceeds the cost of tuition and required fees, books and related classroom expenses is subject to US income tax. Also subject to income tax is remuneration for teaching and research positions.

Additionally, international students should consult with the Harvard International Office regarding basic information concerning their tax situations.

Human Genetics and Genomics, PhD

The Johns Hopkins Human Genetics and Genomics Training Program provides training in all aspects of human genetics and genomics relevant to human biology, health and disease. 

Advances in human genetics and genomics continue at an astounding rate and increasingly they are being integrated into medical practice. The Human Genetics and Genomics Program aims to educate highly motivated and capable students with the knowledge and experimental tools that will enable them to answer important questions at the interface between genetics and medicine. Ultimately, our trainees will be the leaders in delivering the promise of genetics to human health.

The overall objective of the Human Genetics program is to provide our students with a strong foundation in basic science by exposure to a rigorous graduate education in genetics, genomics, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and biostatistics as well as a core of medically-related courses selected to provide knowledge of human biology in health and disease. 

This program is also offered as training for medical students in the combined M.D./Ph.D. program.  Students apply to the combined program at the time of application to the M.D. program. (See section entitled Medical Scientist Training Program).

Research Facilities

Research laboratories are well equipped to carry out sophisticated research in all areas of genetics. The proximity to renown clinical facilities of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, including the Department of Genetic Medicine, and Oncology Center provides faculty and students with access to a wealth of material for study. Computer and library facilities are excellent. Laboratories involved in the Human Genetics Program span Johns Hopkins University; consequently supporting facilities are extensive.

Financial Aid

The program is supported by a training grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. These fellowships, which are restricted to United States citizens and permanent United States residents, cover tuition, health care insurance and a stipend during year one.  Once a student has joined a thesis lab, all financial responsibilities belong to the mentor.   Students are encouraged, however, to apply for fellowships from outside sources (e.g., the National Science Foundation, Fulbright Scholars Program, Howard Hughes Medical Institute) before entering the program.

Applicants for admission should show a strong academic foundation with coursework in biology, chemistry and quantitative analysis.   Applicants are encouraged to have exposure to lab research or to data science.  A bachelor's degree from a qualified college or university will be required for matriculation.  GREs are no longer required.

Program Requirements

The program includes the following required core courses: Advanced Topics in Human Genetics, Evolving Concept of the Gene, Molecular Biology and Genomics, Cell Structure and Dynamics, Computational Bootcamp,  Pathways and Regulation, Genomic Technologies, Rigor and Reproducibility in Research, and Systems, Genes and Mechanisms of Disease. Numerous elective courses are available and are listed under sponsoring departments.

Our trainees must take a minimum of four electives, one of which must provide computational/statistical training.

The HG program requires the “OPTIONS” Career Curriculum offered by the Professional Development and Career Office.  OPTIONS is designed to provide trainees with the skills for career building and the opportunity for career exploration as well as professional development training

Human Genetics trainees also take a two-week course in July at the Jackson Labs in Bar Harbor, Maine entitled "Human and Mammalian Genetics and Genomics: The McKusick Short Course" which covers the waterfront from basic principles to the latest developments in mammalian genetics. The faculty numbers about 50 and consists roughly in thirds of JAX faculty, Hopkins faculty and “guest” faculty comprising outstanding mammalian geneticists from other US universities and around the world.

The courses offered by the faculty of the program are listed below. All courses are open to graduate students from any university program as well as selected undergraduates with permission of the course director.

Trainees must complete three research rotations before deciding on their thesis lab.  They must also participate in the Responsible Conduct of Research sessions offered by the Biomedical Program; starting at year 3, students must attend at least two Research Integrity Colloquium lectures per year. 

Our trainees participate in weekly journal clubs, department seminars, monthly Science & Pizza presentations as well as workshops given twice a year on diversity, identity and culture.

At the end of the second year, trainees take their Doctoral Board Oral Examination.  Annual thesis committee meetings must be held following successful completion of this exam.

Average time for completion is 5.3 years.

Program Description

Degree Awarded: PHD Biology

The PhD program in biology offers individualized courses of study tailored to students' interests that include laboratory, field and theoretical work. Flexibility in the program is achieved by requiring only one core class, which is a choice between two topics that cover the breadth of the research directions in this program.

Electives are also as flexible as possible and include areas outside of biology. The major goal is to provide students with the opportunity to create an adaptable and general degree program that allows both traditional and interdisciplinary approaches in any area of biology.

How to apply.

Applications open September 1 for admission in Fall of the following year. The application deadline is December 1 . We accept applications for Fall semesters only. We cannot guarantee that applications received after the December 1 deadline will be considered for admission.

All applicants must apply by filling out ASU's Graduate Admissions application. All application materials must be submitted through the application or to Graduate Admissions directly. Please do not mail or email any documents to the School of Life Sciences. 

Required materials and information include the following:

  • 1-2 page personal statement
  • An up to date CV or resume
  • The names of relevant SOLS faculty you have been in touch with who you might be interested in being supervised by
  • Unofficial transcripts and English proficiency test scores (if applicable)
  • The names and emails of at least 3 recommenders to write you letters of recommendation

Application review process and timeline

Following the December 1 deadline, faculty will begin reviewing applications. Applicants should monitor their My ASU priority tasks to ensure there are no missing materials in their application.

Faculty will decide which applicants they would like to invite to our Graduate Recruitment Weekends (GRWs), typically held in February. Applicants will hear from the School of Life Sciences in January if they are invited to participate in the GRWs.

Admission decisions will begin after the GRWs, and applicants typically receive final decisions by April 1.

Requirements

Minimum requirements for admission include the following:

  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • There are other ways to demonstrate English proficiency beyond the tests, so please refer to ASU's English proficiency webpage to review how you might satisfy requirements

Desired qualifications typically seen in competitive candidates:

  • Research experience and a letter of recommendation from a faculty research supervisor
  • English proficiency scores that meet these teaching assistant language proficiency requirements

Please note that the GRE is not required.

Students offered admission to a PhD program in the School of Life Sciences will typically receive a funding offer as well. While individual funding offers may differ to some degree, they typically include teaching assistant and/or research assistant positions each semester (summer optional) for 5 years. These positions provide financial coverage through the following:

  • A standard salary stipend paid biweekly
  • Tuition remission covering enrollment in 6-18 credit hours for fall and spring semesters and 1-14 credit hours for summer semesters
  • Health insurance coverage

Additional Curriculum Information The program is tailored to the needs of the individual student. The plan of study is developed by the student and a supervisory committee consisting of a major professor and three additional faculty members. The electives credit hours are comprised of coursework showing breadth in biology subdisciplines, seminars and research.

An oral comprehensive examination is required in order to advance to candidacy, and a formal defense of the final written dissertation is required prior to graduation.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in biology or a related discipline from a regionally accredited institution.

Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 hours of their first bachelor's degree program, or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in an applicable master's degree program.

The PhD program trains students for careers in research and teaching. In addition to a wide range of courses, the PhD program offers informal but intensive instruction in laboratories and seminars, characterized by close contact between students and their faculty advisors. Biology is one of fourteen home programs  in the  Biosciences,  which span the School of Medicine and the School of Humanities and Sciences.

How to Apply

For the 2023-2024 PhD application season, application processes will be run through existing Biology (School of Humanities & Sciences)  and the Oceans Department(Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability). 

Previously part of the Biology Department , Hopkins Marine Station is now part of the Oceans Department within the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability (SDSS).  Several faculty took appointments in Oceans, while others chose to stay in Biology; still others have joint appointments.  Additionally, several faculty members in Ecology/Evolutionary Biology now have joint appointments within Biology and SDSS. Based on these changes, the following information will provide further guidance for the application process. 

  • Faculty with 100% appointments in Biology, will only recruit through Biology.  The Biology application will be used.
  • Ecology/Evolutionary Biology faculty with 50/50 appointments in both Biology and SDSS will recruit students through either Biology or Earth Systems Science .  If you are interested in working with Ecology/Evolutionary faculty with joint Biology/SDSS appointments, you should reach out to them directly regarding the appropriate application track to choose. 
  • 100% Oceans faculty will only be recruiting students through the Earth Systems Science application.
  • Oceans faculty appointed 50/50 in Biology and SDSS (Oceans Department), will recruit students through either Biology or Earth Systems Science .  If you are interested in working with Oceans faculty with joint Biology/SDSS appointments, you should reach out to the individual faculty members you hope to work with regarding the appropriate application and track to choose.

Graduate Funding

The Georgetown Biology Ph.D. program is fully funded; a stipend and tuition waiver will be provided for all five years of the program. Students in the program receive their stipends through a combination of research assistantship jobs, teaching assistantship jobs, university fellowships, and external fellowships. 

Stipend funding

Assistantships.

Many students are funded by paid assistantships for all five years. This means that students work as Research Assistants or Teaching Assistants (sometimes called “Teaching Fellows” in the biology department), depending on the semester. For the purpose of managing working conditions and hours, the graduate school differentiates between work you are doing for a stipend (your “employment”) and work you are doing for your degree and dissertation (your “academics”). Teaching Assistants typically help run recitation or lab sections for a course taught by a professor. Research Assistants usually work in the lab of their PI, and can be asked to do work that is not directly related to their dissertation. Both of these jobs are unionized, and subject to the contract negotiated between Georgetown and the Georgetown Alliance of Graduate Employees . Under this agreement, your employment duties cannot exceed 15 hours per week; the remainder of your time is reserved for your own coursework and dissertation research. 

External fellowships

Students are encouraged to pursue external fellowship funding. Fellowships are prestigious and provide a stipend that is not dependent on a work, or “service” obligation. This can provide more time to focus on your dissertation research and more flexibility in pursuing research topics outside of the interests of your PI.

The most common fellowship that graduate students in the department have won is the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship . This fellowship provides funding for three years of your dissertation; if you are awarded this or other fellowships before you begin graduate school it will strengthen your application and may allow the department to accept you even if funding is limited. If you reach out to a potential advisor in advance, they may be interested in working with you to develop a GRFP proposal on research you could do in their lab.

Internal fellowships

The Graduate School provides a number of Dissertation Fellowship Awards each year.  Typically, each award will include two semesters of Thesis Research scholarship support.

These capstone awards are intended for doctoral candidates who are in the final stages of their research and writing. Nominees must have completed all coursework and language requirements for their program, passed their comprehensive examinations, and have an approved thesis proposal on file with the Graduate School by the nomination deadline. Each Main Campus doctoral program may nominate one doctoral candidate for a Dissertation Fellowship. The Committee for Graduate Students and Studies will meet to determine the eligibility of students and help prepare the nomination packet to send to the Graduate School. Interested students or faculty mentors should contact CGSS for more information. 

Internal Professional Development and Research Funding

Travel funds .

The Graduate School and the department support the professional development of graduate students by providing Conference Travel Grants to doctoral students. These grants may be used toward travel and other expenses associated with attendance at a professional meeting and may be requested in advance. The amount of the individual grants will depend on the nature of the student’s participation and the location of the conference.  Please check the Graduate School’s pages for additional information and deadlines. The department travel grants operate on a rolling basis; contact CGSS for more information.

Dissertation Research Travel Award

The Graduate School provides a number of Doctoral Dissertation Research Travel awards of up to $5,000 each. These awards will support the travel costs of doctoral students engaged in archival or field research outside the United States. Grants will not exceed $5,000; the actual amount awarded will depend on budgets submitted by nominees.  

Nominees must have completed all coursework and language requirements for their program, passed their comprehensive examinations, and have an approved thesis proposal on file with the Graduate School by the nomination deadline. Each Main Campus doctoral program may nominate one doctoral candidate for a Dissertation Research Travel award . The Committee for Graduate Students and Studies will meet to determine the eligibility of students and help to prepare the nomination packet to send to the Graduate School.  Interested students or faculty mentors should contact CGSS for more information.

About the PhD in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology Program

Through a departmental core curriculum as well as research area-specific courses, laboratory rotations, qualifying examinations, mentored research, and professional development, all MMI PhD students are prepared to engage in cutting edge research and scholarship that advances knowledge. MMI PhD students hone their scholarship, research and professional skills. Course and laboratory work can address problems in microbial pathogenesis, immunology, disease transmission, and diseases related to malaria, mosquito and arboviral biology.

Students can choose to complete the traditional MMI PhD program or the MMI PhD program concentration in Rigorous, Reproducible, and Responsible Research Investigation in Immunology & Microbiology (R 3 IM). The concentration in Rigorous, Reproducible, and Responsible Research Investigation in Immunology & Microbiology (R 3 IM) conveys a broad background in immunology and infectious diseases research, with a special emphasis on critical thinking, logic, ethics, and written and oral skills to help graduates become communicators of complex scientific concepts and agents of change in their workplaces and communities.

Standardized Test Scores

Standardized test scores (GRE) are  optional  for this program. The admissions committee will make no assumptions if a standardized test score is omitted from an application, but will require evidence of quantitative/analytical ability through other application components such as academic transcripts and/or supplemental questions.  Applications will be reviewed holistically based on all application components.

Vivien Thomas PhD Scholars

The  Vivien Thomas Scholars Initiative (VTSI)  is an endowed fellowship program at Johns Hopkins for PhD students in STEM fields. It provides full tuition, stipend, and benefits while also providing targeted mentoring, networking, community, and professional development opportunities. Students who have attended a historically Black college and university (HBCU) or other minority serving institution (MSI) for undergraduate study are eligible to apply. To be considered for the VTSI, you will need to submit a SOPHAS application, VTSI supplementary materials, and all supporting documents (letters, transcripts, and test scores) by December 1, 2024. VTSI applicants are eligible for an  application fee waiver , but the fee waiver must be requested by November 15, 2024 and prior to submission of the SOPHAS application.

Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the JHU PhD Union, the minimum guaranteed 2025-2026 academic year stipend is $50,000 for all PhD students with a 4% increase the following year. Tuition, fees, and medical benefits are provided, including health insurance premiums for PhD student’s children and spouses of international students, depending on visa type. The minimum stipend and tuition coverage is guaranteed for at least the first four years of a BSPH PhD program; specific amounts and the number of years supported, as well as work expectations related to that stipend will vary across departments and funding source. Please refer to the  CBA to review specific benefits, compensation, and other terms

Need-Based Relocation Grants Students who  are admitted to PhD programs at JHU starting in Fall 2023 or beyond can apply to receive a need-based grant to offset the costs of relocating to be able to attend JHU.   These grants provide funding to a portion of incoming students who, without this money, may otherwise not be able to afford to relocate to JHU for their PhD program. This is not a merit-based grant. EMBL is dedicated to  promoting excellence  in the molecular life sciences throughout Europe. To achieve this goal, we inspire and train talented young scientists to become skilled and creative future leaders in academia, industry and other sectors.

The EIPP provides comprehensive interdisciplinary training, maintaining a careful balance between theory and practice, close mentoring and creative freedom, collaborative teamwork and independence. These key characteristics make the EIPP a  role model , which has inspired similar programmes at research institutions throughout Europe and the world.

The complexity of current biological research questions increasingly calls for interdisciplinary approaches . To prepare our students for this challenge, the EIPP puts great emphasis on bringing together different fields of expertise: we actively encourage candidates with backgrounds in chemistry, physics, mathematics, molecular medicine, computer science or engineering to apply and work closely with biologists to answer fundamental questions in life sciences.

PHD Symposium

Since its first edition in 2000, the annual EMBL International PhD Symposium in Heidelberg developed into a well-recognized and highly appreciated scientific event.

It is always EMBL’s first year PhD students who take on the responsibility for the conceptual development and organization of the meeting. The symposia provide a great platform for networking and scientific exchange, featuring lectures by top-level scientists as well as plenty of opportunities for young researchers to present their work.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Fully Funded PhD in Genetics

The University of Wisconsin-Madison offers a fully funded PhD in Genetics. The Genetics Training Program provides exceptional opportunities to students. The mission is to train students in cutting-edge genetic and genomic research while providing professional development opportunities for successful career trajectories. Students accepted into the PhD degree program initially receive financial aid from either an NIH training grant or graduate school fellowships. In later years, support may be derived from a research assistantship. Genetics students also receive funding from competitive fellowships.

Johns Hopkins University Fully Funded PhD in Human Genetics and Genomics

Johns Hopkins University, based in Baltimore, Maryland, offers a fully funded PhD in Human Genetics and Genomics. The Johns Hopkins Human Genetics Training Program provides training in all aspects of human genetics and genomics relevant to human biology, health, and disease. The program is supported by a training grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. These fellowships, which are restricted to United States citizens and permanent United States residents, cover tuition, health care insurance, and a stipend during year one. Once a student has joined a thesis lab, all financial responsibilities belong to the mentor.

University of British Columbia Fully Funded PhD in Medical Genetics

The University of British Columbia, based in Canada, offers a fully funded PhD in Medical Genetics. Faculty members in the Department of Medical Genetics are at the forefront of their fields using cutting-edge genetic, epigenetic, genomic, and bioinformatic methodologies to gain insight into diseases such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, neurodegenerative and neurological disorders, and other genetic diseases. The recommended minimum yearly stipend for full-time Medical Genetics thesis-based students (Canadian and international) is $28,000 (PhD). The duration of the annual stipend is normally four years for a PhD student. New and current doctoral students at UBC receive the President’s Academic Excellence Initiative PhD Award (PAEI) tuition award.

Indiana University Fully Funded PhD in Medical and Molecular Genetics

Indiana University, based in Indianapolis, IN, offers a fully funded PhD in Medical and Molecular Genetics. The Department provides a wide range of research opportunities in the rapidly changing field of human genetics. Students have the freedom to explore research areas through three rotations in laboratories across programs and choose entry into any of the ten PhD programs at the conclusion of the first academic year. Students receive competitive stipends, tuition scholarships, and health insurance. PhD students with eligibility to work in the U.S. receive a competitive annual stipend without a Teaching Assistant requirement as well as tuition scholarships and health and dental insurance.

University of Iowa Fully Funded PhD in Genetics

The University of Iowa, based in Iowa City, IA, offers a fully funded PhD in Genetics. The interdisciplinary PhD program trains students on the frontiers of Genetics research and develops leaders that meet the upcoming challenges in the field of Genetics. Students in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Genetics are eligible for financial support through a combination of training grants, scholarships, fellowships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, University support, and revenue from the Carver Trust. McGill University, based in Canada, offers a fully funded PhD in Human Genetics. The Department of Human Genetics provides a unified curriculum of study in genetics. Areas of specialization include biochemical genetics, genetics of development, animal models of human diseases, cancer genetics, molecular pathology, gene therapy, genetic dissection of complex traits, genetics of infectious and inflammatory diseases, non-mendelian genetics, bioinformatics, behavioral genetics, neurogenetics, bioethics, and genomics. Funding amounts to cover tuition & stipend must be secured and guaranteed for the entire duration of a student’s degree program. Wayne State University Fully Funded PhD in Molecular Genetics and Genomics

Wayne State University, based in Detroit, Michigan, offers a fully funded PhD in Molecular Genetics and Genomics. This is a research-intensive graduate program that prepares students for careers in academia or industry. Molecular Genetics and Genomics graduate students receive broad training in genetics, molecular and cellular biology, genomics, functional genomics, systems biology, bioinformatics, and computational and statistical methods. A major component of their training is conducting dissertation research in one of the focus areas of the Center faculty. PhD students are funded by a Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) that includes a competitive stipend, paid tuition, and subsidized medical insurance.

Cancer Biology PhD Program

Established in 1978, the interdisciplinary Cancer Biology PhD Program is designed to provide graduate and medical students with the education and training they need to make significant contributions to the field of cancer biology. The program is led by Laura Attardi, PhD, and Julien Sage, PhD, and currently has over 60 participating faculty members representing a variety of specialties.

Coursework during the first year equips students with a broad understanding of the molecular, genetic, cellular biological and pathobiological aspects of cancer. By the beginning of the second year, students have chosen a research advisor and begun work on their dissertation projects. An annual program conference provides students with an opportunity to present their research findings, receive feedback and forge collaborations with faculty and fellow students. 

The Cancer Biology program also sponsors a postdoctoral scholar track in which accepted MD and PhD scholars pursue research under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Program Description

The Duke Development and Stem Cell Biology (DSCB) Program is a broad, interdepartmental consortium of students and faculty pursuing developmental, stem cell, and regenerative biology research at the molecular, cellular, genetic, evolutionary, and systems levels. Researchers from across over 10 departments at Duke University and Duke School of Medicine participate. The mission of the DSCB PhD program is to train the next generation of predoctoral scientists in principles of development, stem cell biology, and regeneration through targeted coursework, lab research, and interactions within the DSCB community. The diverse backgrounds, research expertise, and perspectives of our community enable us to enrich and personalize the training environment. Our goal is to develop in our students: confidence, independent critical thinking, academic rigor, and the intellectual curiosity and creativity to synthesize new ideas and communicate them effectively. Our training plan incorporates education in core principles of development, stem cell biology and regeneration, as well as foundational education in genetics and molecular and cellular biology. Our students also gain training in data science principles, scientific communication, responsible conduct of research, and grant writing. This is achieved through a curriculum composed of modular course structure, innovative hands-on-training, and discussion-based courses. Extensive laboratory training provides each student with expertise in a chosen specialty, and technical and conceptual scientific skillsets. University-wide resources provide valuable professional resources and opportunities to help students develop their full potential to pursue a diversity of careers.

Students may apply and be admitted directly to the Developmental and Stem Cell Biology Program. After the second year of study at Duke, students will identify a participating department in which they will earn their Ph.D. (Note: For international students in particular, designation on the application form of a department in addition to this program may be helpful in securing funding.)

International PhD Programme

Austria PhD Programme

An Austrian PhD usually takes 3-4 years. Most students complete their projects within broader PhD programmes incorporating a curriculum of courses and training worth a certain number of ECTS credits as well as research towards an original thesis. This will be presented for a public examination by two academic experts. Most programmes are delivered in German, but some universities offer English-language teaching.
