Dasvi Movie Review:

Dasvi review: Abhishek Bachchan, Nimrat Kaur, Yami Gautam pass with flying colours in this bungled film

  • Aishwarya Vasudevan

Last Updated: 06.32 AM, Apr 07, 2022

An ignorant politician (Abhishek A Bachchan) is imprisoned by a tough cop (Yami Gautam Dhar) and resolves to spend his time studying for high school, but his conniving wife (Nimrat Kaur) has other plans.

That towering personality walking into the jail after being convicted of a scam will make you wonder whether Abhishek A Bachchan will be mouthing the iconic dialogue of his father and legend, Amitabh Bachchan, " Hum jahan khade ho jaate hain, line wahi se shuru hoti hai ." But instead, we get a middle-aged Chief Minister dancing to Macha Macha Re after being jailed and promised five-star treatment in prison.

Without any second thought, Ganga Ram Chaudhary (Bachchan) gives away that power to his naive wife, Bimla Devi, aka Bimmo (Nimrat Kaur). As expected, we see that the convicted "ex" CM of the fictional state of Harit Pradesh takes the remote control in his hand and instructs his wife to do as he says. In the process, he encounters Jyoti Deswal (Yami Gautam), who is in charge of the Central Jail where he is imprisoned. This basic premise, loaded with the right to education, sets the stage for the rest of the plot.

image_item

Do they all pass with flying colours? Well, the actors do, but not the plot, which has high intent in serving the purpose.

Without wasting any time, the story establishes that Chaudhary wants to complete his schooling, but makes it an excuse to not do any household chores. Well, then out of nowhere, we just see multiple déjà vu moments from many iconic films.

First things first, the makers just decided to pay an unwanted homage to Rang De Basanti by creating scenes that Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra did in the sequences of the documentary. In Dasvi , it just tried to be funny by showing that a corrupted politician is "awakened" after reading a history textbook. Instead, it urged me to revisit the 2006 film ASAP!

Well, the references just don't stop there... In its way, with caricaturish dialogues, Bachchan takes the Taare Zameen Par route, wherein his inmates help him, and it will remind you of Aamir Khan's dialogue, " Padhne likhne ke liye aksharon ki awaaz, unki banavat, shabdon ka matlab samajhna zaroori ." They do take this dialogue in a literal sense, and we see "eureka" moments witnessed by Chaudhary.

At some point in time, one might feel that Dasvi is a part of the Irrfan Khan starrer Hindi Medium franchise, which also touched upon the importance of education beautifully. The feelings do get stronger if you watch the song Thaan Liya in the film, a similar track to Ek Jindari .

These references make Dasvi a little tedious to watch as the film doesn't have anything new to offer despite having the plot of a Chief Minister completing his education in jail. To be honest, Bachchan even fails to show that he is even a former CM, so we just live in a make-believe world when it comes to the politicians of the country.

When it comes to performances, Abhishek A Bachchan did hit it out of the park with his performance. The actor brings that innocence of being an uneducated man, which blends well with the well-informed politician. He owns the sequences with his perfect attitude and stupendous dialogue delivery.

On the other hand, for me, it was Nimrat Kaur who was the show-stealer in the film. From being the cherubic and naive wife of a CM to taking power in her hands along with an extreme image makeover, she has been shown fantastically. It's a treat to see her imbibe the negative shades, showing how power gets into one's head and you just think about yourself.

Meanwhile, Yami Gautam Dhar plays it well as a tough cop and leaves an impressive mark with her mannerisms and dialogue delivery.

Writers Ritesh Shah, Suresh Nair, and Sandeep Laeyzell have their hearts in the right place. But too many cooks do spoil the broth. That's what Dasvi suffered immensely. The Right to Education plot seems original, but the sequences are taken from the films mentioned above and also from Munna Bhai M.B.B.S .

The lack of originality even makes the performances by the lead actors suffer. However, their efforts, and also those of Tushar Jalota, are quite visible, but only work as a catalyst due to the half-baked screenplay.

But the film, despite showing most of the jail sequences, hardly makes it look like a prison. That's where one might just lose interest too.

Abhishek Bachchan, Nimrat Kaur, and Yami Gautam Dhar pass with flying colours in Dasvi , but the screenplay misses the mark tragically.

Dasvi Movie Review: Abhishek Bachchan, Yami Gautam and Nimrat Kaur starrer Dasvi rests on an interesting story and impressive performances.

While dasvi rests on an interesting story, message, and the impressive performances by the three leading actors, it turns out to be an average fare due to the flawed script., dasvi review {2.5/5} & review rating.

DASVI is the story of an illiterate chief minister. Ganga Ram Chaudhary ( Abhishek A Bachchan ) is the chief minister of Harit Pradesh. He's sent to jail for indulging in a teacher's scam. Immediately, Ganga Ram tells his docile wife Bimla ( Nimrat Kaur ) to become the chief minister in his absence. At first, the police in charge, Satnam Tomar (Manu Rishi Chadha) gives him his own quarters inside the jail to reside. He's allowed to eat food cooked from outside and moreover, he is not given any work to do, unlike other prisoners. All this changes once Jyoti Deswal ( Yami Gautam Dhar ) is made the superintendent of the prison. She is a taskmaster who believes in doing her duty religiously. She compels Ganga Ram to shift to a prison cell and consume jail food. She also orders him to take up the work of making chairs. His picture of making a chair goes viral and he becomes the butt of all jokes. An enraged Ganga Ram orders Bimla to pass transfer orders of Jyoti immediately. However, Bimla has tasted blood after assuming power. She knows that her powers will be snatched away once Ganga Ram is released. Hence, she reminds Ganga Ram that it was he who had transferred Jyoti to the prison after she had beaten up his party workers. Hence, shifting her again would go against him. One day, Ganga Ram finds out that a few prisoners are students and are preparing for upcoming exams. He is also told that those who study are exempted from working. This and his childhood dream of getting a degree prompts Ganga Ram to announce that he'll sit for the Class 10 exams. In a fit of rage, he also bets with Jyoti that if he fails in the 10th boards, he'll never become a chief minister again in his life. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Dasvi

Ram Bajpai's story is promising. Ritesh Shah, Suresh Nair and Sandeep Leyzell's screenplay, however, is poor. The film is intended to be a comic caper. However, there are hardly any funny moments in the film that’ll make viewers laugh out loud. There are also several loopholes in the script. Ritesh Shah, Suresh Nair and Sandeep Leyzell's dialogues are sharp, but only at a few places. A film of this kind should have had witty and hilarious dialogues throughout the narrative.

Tushar Jalota's direction is average though the message on the importance of education comes across well. He has also handled some moments nicely. This is especially in the latter part of the film. The scene where Ganga Ram’s results are called out is one such sequence that shows that the director has potential. Another track that works is Jyoti and Ganga Ram’s bond and how it evolves as the story progresses. The transformation of Bimla is also quite badass. However, Tushar Jalota should have properly focused on how a shy and soft-spoken Bimla suddenly turned into such a heartless and manipulative person. The change in her personality is too sudden. Moreover, if the makers had shown that Ganga Ram used to mistreat her constantly, then it would have made sense to see Bimla getting even with Ganga Ram after assuming power. But Ganga Ram didn’t seem to be rude to her. The lone scene at the beginning between Ganga Ram and Bimla showed the former actually insisting that the latter should develop an attitude as she’s the CM’s wife. Hence, it’s unconvincing why Bimla is being so unkind to her husband. The whole scam track also didn’t impress as it’s not neatly explained. Probably, the makers wanted to keep the narrative shorter and while they succeeded in doing so, these crucial details were not given due importance which diminishes the impact.

ROFL – When Abhishek Bachchan topped the class | Teaser | Dasvi | Nimrat Kaur

Abhishek A Bachchan gives a sincere performance. He tries his best to make his act entertaining and succeeds. Nimrat Kaur is a surprise. She gets to play a great role and she enhances it with her performance. The scenes where she takes the CM’s oath and where she blasts a staffperson are too good. Yami Gautam Dhar too does fine and is convincing in the role of a strict police officer. Manu Rishi Chadha is decent. Chittaranjan Tripathy (Tandon; IAS officer) is fine. Arun Kushwaha (Ghanti) does well. Danish Husain (Rae Bareli; librarian) and the actors playing Prem Qaidi and Inaamdar are okay. Dhanveer Singh (Ganga Ram's brother) is wasted.

Sachin-Jigar's music won’t have a long shelf life.  'Macha Macha Re'  is like the theme song of the film and is well woven into the narrative.  'Nakhralo'  is forgettable.  'Thaan Liya'  gives the déjà vu of  'Ek Jindari'. 'Ghani Trip'  is missing from the film. Sachin-Jigar's background score keeps the mood light-hearted and funny.

Kabir Tejpal's cinematography is neat. Mayur Barate's production design is realistic. Sheetal Iqbal Sharma's costumes are not glamorous but look appealing. A Sreekar Prasad's editing is good.

On the whole, DASVI rests on an interesting story and message and the impressive performances by the three leading actors. However, due to the flawed script, it turns out to be an average fare.

Dasvi Movie Review: Abhishek Bachchan-Yami Gautam-Nimrat Kaur's Film Delivers An Impressive Report Card

'Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.' When Ganga Ram Chaudhary (Abhishek Bachchan)'s eyes fall on this famous proverb, it forces him to ponder upon his rigid belief system and question his principles.

Strangely, this scene took me back to some of Abhishek Bachchan's media interviews wherein the actor had reflected on his past failures and how those rejections had taught him the most. Somehow, the lines between real and reel had blurred at that moment. In a nutshell, Tushar Jalota's directorial debut Dasvi has Jr Bachchan winning hearts and how!

EXCLUSIVE! Abhishek Bachchan: If You Respond Positively To Failure, It's Not A Failure, It's A Learning

Available on: Netflix and Jio Cinema

What's Yay: Performances, Direction

What's Nay: A few stray moments here and there.

Abhishek Bachchan Reveals The Best Advice He Got From Wife Aishwarya Rai; 'Check Your Zipper'

Ganga Ram Chaudhary (Abhishek Bachchan), a street-smart and powerful politician, is sent to judicial custody in connection with an educational scam. "Yeh Chaudharahat ki pagdi hain, jhukti ko nahin," he proudly proclaims when asked to enter the prison through a tiny door. In his absence, he appoints his meek wife Bimladevi (Nimrat Kaur) as the Chief Minister and entrusts her with the responsibility of running the state.

Meanwhile, in prison, Ganga Ram comes across the no-nonsense Superintendent Of Police, Jyoti Deswal (Yami Gautam) who refuses to bend to Chaudhary's whims and fancies. Later in the heat of a moment, Jyoti ends up triggering Chaudhary by calling him an 'anpadh gawaar.' Upset over his insult, the disgraced Chief Minister takes up the challenge of completing his tenth grade exams.

As time passes by, the man who is used to power-play outside, finds himself lost in the world of education. On the other hand, Chaudhary's wife Bimladevi, driven by the lust of power, starts learning the tricks of politics to stop her husband from reclaiming his position. Will Ganga Ram Chaudhary win both the tests? The rest of the film holds an answer to that.

Direction

Tushar Jalota makes a confident debut as a director with Abhishek Bachchan-starrer Dasvi . He makes sure to pack in enough laughs in his social satire to keep you entertained throughout the film. Some of the political jargon hits the bull's eye and makes you chuckle. Without being too preachy, Jalota and his team of writers (Suresh Nair and Ritesh Shah) touch a relevant subject which strikes a chord.

In a country where we often come across barely-qualified politicians holding the power of decision-making, Jalota's Dasvi throws light on the importance of education. In one of the scenes in the film, Abhishek's character Ganga Ram talks about the difference between 'aankh' and 'drishti' , and 'dimaag' and 'soch' and how it's education which helps you to differentiate between these things.

Speaking about the 'nay' points, the narrative does get a tad repetitive in the second half but Tushar quickly tightens his directorial reins and takes his film to the winning point.

Performances

Performances

Before the trailer launch of Dasvi , Abhishek Bachchan had penned a heartwarming note in which he had mentioned that he wants to be unapologetic about this film, because he deeply believes that the team has made a good flick. Well, we must say, Jr Bachchan's words ring every bit true. As Ganga Ram Chaudhary, the actor brings with him a certain swag and vulnerability which instantly wins you over.

Yami Gautam as the 'Sherni' tough cop shines in her role and proves yet again why she is one of the most promising talents in Indian cinema. One of her crucial scenes with Abhishek Bachchan in the latter half, leaves you moist-eyed with a smile. Lending an equally effective performance on screen is Nimrat Kaur as Bimladevi. Her transformation from a docile better half of a politician to a crafty, power-hungry Chief Minister makes for an entertaining watch.

Popular YouTuber Arun Kuswah, who rose to fame as Chote Miyan in TVF videos, gives you plenty of rib-tickling moments. The rest of the cast including Danish Hussain play their parts well.

Technical Aspects

Technical Aspects

Kabir Tejpal's camera work goes apt with the narrative of the film. A Sreekar Prasad keeps his editing tight which is why there's barely any dull moment in Dasvi.

Music

'Macha Macha Re' crooned by Mika Singh makes for a foot-tapping listen. The rest of the tracks, 'Ghani Trip', 'Thaan Liya' and 'Nakhralo' are forgettable.

Verdict

Ganga Ram Chaudhary and Bimala Devi quip, "Thoda uchaa bolo" to each other when the political power lies in their respective hands. However, in Dasvi , Abhishek Bachchan and his team let their work do all the talking and pass with flying colours.

We give 3.5 stars out of 5 for Abhishek Bachchan-Yami Gautam-Nimrat Kaur starrer Dasvi.

Is this a film about the circus of Indian politics or is it about the hold of illiteracy in the country? Dasvi doesn't really deliver on either count, crafting an overcooked story that jumps from one distraction to another.

Review: abhishek bachchan's 'dasvi' makes the cardinal mistake of being boring, dasvi also stars nimrat kaur and yami gautam..

A film can be anything it wants to be, but Dasvi makes the cardinal mistake of being... boring! Innumerable yawn-inducing, unfunny moments together conspire to make it a tiresome watch.

It’s all very well to end with a Nelson Mandela quote about the “power of education”, but good intentions alone can’t make a great film.

The story (by Ram Bajpai) and the screenplay, credited to not one but three people, Ritesh Shah, Suresh Nair and Sandeep Leyzell, revolve around Ganga Ram Chaudhary (Abhishek Bachchan). A corrupt, dishonest politician, he is the Chief Minister of an imaginary state called Harit Pradesh. With scant regard for morals, ethics and education, Ganga Ram trudges on till his misdeeds land him in jail. We must then witness his evolution into a man who finally bows to the reformatory power of education.

Dasvi also stars Nimrat Kaur and Yami Gautam.

Abhishek Bachchan in Dasvi .

The only problem is that it's tough to stay awake because the film presents the idea in the most uninspiring fashion. To fortify his political clout, Ganga Ram appoints his wife Bimla Devi (Nimrat Kaur) as the next CM. Ghunghat clad, leading a bovine existence, Bimla has no idea what has come her way as she falteringly takes her shapath . In jail, Ganga Ram is accorded with a five-star treatment, until a tough Jail superintendent Jyoti Deswal (Yami Gautam) comes in and puts everyone’s nose to the grindstone.

Click on the player below for the full podcast.

Ganga Ram is assigned the task of making chairs. Unwilling to do any hard labour, he decides to study for his Class 10 board exams. Soon, this becomes his sole mission in life and, much to our horror, the narrative that anyway refused to take off comes to a grinding halt. Letters begin to fly on screen and Bachchan is shown having imaginary conversations with leaders from the freedom movement. As Ganga Ram contorts his face and body in various positions reading book after book, director Tushar Jalota inexplicably keeps showing us the same visuals. It’s almost like we are stuck in an academic year ourselves with no assurance of any speedy redressal.

Dasvi also stars Nimrat Kaur and Yami Gautam.

Nimrat Kaur in Dasvi .

For a film like this to work, the writing had to be sharper. Here, most of the jokes fall flat and Abhishek’s ‘sometimes there sometimes not’ accent makes matters worse. His performance seems laboured and feels more like he is mimicking a politician than actually getting into the skin of his character. Nimrat Kaur and Yami Gautam, on the other hand, get scantily- written characters, but hold our attention every time they are in the frame. How did a shy, hesitant Bimla become a power-hungry politician overnight? Why does a strict disciplinarian like Jyoti have a change of heart? These are answers we will never have. It would have been interesting to explore the power dynamics between the former and current CM as husband and wife, but the film throws away that chance too. Manu Rishi Chadha, Chittaranjan Tripathy, Arun Kushwaha try to make the most of what they have to offer, but Dasvi never recovers. It hurtles around aimlessly as if waiting for someone to whisper directions.

Our rating: 1 .5 Quints out of 5 .

Is Dasvi Based on a True Story?

of Is Dasvi Based on a True Story?

Directed by Tushar Jalota, ‘Dasvi’ is a Hindi language political drama movie that follows Gangaram Chaudhary, an Indian Chief Minister whose education is limited to the eighth grade. The politician is sentenced to prison due to his involvement in a teacher recruitment scam. His wife, Bimla Devi, finds herself as the new Chief Minister and realizes she likes the power. Within the prison, Gangaram is tired of the constant jeers by IPS (Indian Police Service) officer Jyoti Deswal and decides to further his education and pass the 10th-grade exams.

The political satire boasts a splendid array of actors like Abhishek Bachchan, Nimrat Kaur, and Yami Gautam. Owing to the excellent performances by the talented cast members, ‘Dasvi’ touches upon some major issues like the Indian prison system and the state of Indian politics. Given the sensitive topic addressed in the movie, fans must be eager to know how deep-rooted is the film into reality. If you’re looking for the same, we have all the information you need!

Is Dasvi a True Story?

Yes, Dasvi is based upon a true story. The story of Gangaram Chaudhary is inspired by the life experiences of Om Prakash Chautala, the former Chief Minister of the Indian state of Haryana. Chautala comes from a politically active family. His father, Chaudhary Devi Lal, was an active member of the Indian Independence movement and later became a prominent player in the formation of Haryana as a separate state from Punjab. Devi Lal served as the Chief Minister of Haryana from 1977 to 1979 and again from 1987 to 1989. He then became India’s Deputy Prime Minister from 1989 to 1991.

dasvi movie review ndtv

Om Prakash Chautala followed in his father’s footsteps and dropped out of school to pursue politics. His career started on dicey terms thanks to his involvement in multiple scandals, including one where he was accused of attempting to smuggle a large number of wristwatches at Delhi Airport from another country in the late 70s. The controversies created a strain between Chautala and his father though the two were later able to make amends.

Chautala’s political star kept rising as he was elected as the Chief Minister of Haryana four times. His last term ended on March 5, 2005. He is the President of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), a political party formed by his father within the state of Haryana, to combat the dominating presence of the Indian National Congress (INC) and Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) on the state’s political turf.

dasvi movie review ndtv

However, in 2008, Chautala and his associates were charged with the fraudulent appointment of teachers from 1999 to 2000. The case ended with Chaulata, his son, Ajay Singh Chautala, as well as 53 others getting convicted in January 2013 for over 3000 illegal teacher recruitments in Haryana under Om Prakash Chautala’s tenure. The father-son duo was granted a 10-year sentence in Tihar Jail, the most notable prison in India and the largest in South Asia.

During his stay in the facilitated prison, Chautala decided to complete his matriculation and pass the 10th-grade exams. Through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Chautala appeared for his Class X Boards in 2017 at the exam center for inmates within the Tihar Jail. His chosen subjects were Social Sciences, Science and Technology, Hindi, Indian Culture and Heritage, and Business Studies. The then-82-year-old got 267 marks out of 500, passing with second division at 53.4%!

dasvi movie review ndtv

The title ‘Dasvi’ translates to ‘Tenth’ in English, referring to Gangaram’s main goal within the movie. The movie takes several creative liberties with the story that add to the overall charm and drama of the film. Gangaram Chaudhary is portrayed as significantly younger than Chautala was when he passed 10th grade. The characters of Gangaram’s wife, Bimla Devi, and IPS officer Jyoti Deswal introduce more conflicts to the story that give it more depth.

The movie also depicts what the life of a prison inmate is like in Indian jails. Using the Agra Central Jail, located in the same district as the famous Taj Mahal, as a filming spot adds to the film’s authenticity. To reiterate, even with its positive outlook and optimistic tone, ‘Dasvi’ is based on Om Prakash Chautala’s educational journey in prison. The movie’s main themes are a definite match to Chautala’s life in Tihar jail. Despite the corruption that led to his incarceration, the former Chief Minister’s educational pursuit lets the people know that it is never too late to go after what you desire.

Dasvi is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language social comedy film directed by debutante Tushar Jalota and produced by Dinesh Vijan under his banner Maddock Films in collaboration with Jio Studios as well as Shobhna Yadav and Sandeep Leyzell under Bake My Cake Films. It stars Abhishek Bachchan, Yami Gautam and Nimrat Kaur. Bachchan plays the role of an uneducated politician, with Gautam as an IPS officer. The film premiered on Netflix and JioCinema on 7 April 2022. Famous poet and politician Dr. Kumar Vishwas served as the script and dialogue consultant. The film received mixed reviews with praise for its storyline, humour, performances (particularly Bachchan, Kaur, and Gautam’s) and social message but criticism for its inconsistency in its screenplay.

Ganga Ram Chaudhary, the charismatic and arrogant Chief Minister of the fictional state of Harit Pradesh, is implicated in a scam and remanded to judicial custody. He appoints his wife Bimla Devi “Bimmo” Chaudhary as CM until he can post bail. Initially meek and subservient, Bimmo quickly learns the ropes and establishes herself as a powerful politician, undergoing an image makeover in the process. Meanwhile, Chaudhary’s popularity and street-smarts gain him a following in jail and he receives preferential treatment. When Jyoti Deswal, a new superintendent, arrives at the jail, Chaudhary’s life takes a turn for the worse. Incorruptible and no-nonsense, Jyoti revokes Chaudhary’s privileges and treats him like any other prisoner. Chaudhary’s attempts to bribe a judge fail, and his immediate bail request is denied.

Following a confrontation, Jyoti embarrasses Chaudhary by evoking his lack of education – he dropped out in 8th grade – and puts him to work in the prison workshop making chairs as he is unqualified for any other work. Spurred by this and by the fact that prisoners attempting to gain a 10th-grade diploma are exempt from work, Chaudhary resolves to study and clear the 10th-grade exams to gain his high-school diploma. Jyoti believes this is a scam, but her hands are tied as Indian Law grants Chaudhary the right to complete his education. Chaudhary struggles to stay engaged in his studies, frequently falling asleep, until he is inspired by a history textbook detailing India’s struggle for independence; he begins to take his studies much more seriously. He declares that if he cannot clear his exams, he will not re-enter Politics.

Meanwhile, Bimmo grows ambitious and plots to make her interim post permanent, suggesting to Chaudhary that he feign mental illness to gain asylum in a lavish hospital. Jyoti foils this by exposing Chaudhary’s lies, saving his political career in the process (as people proved to be mentally unfit are disqualified from contesting elections). When Chaudhary suffers a minor heart attack, Jyoti saves him by performing CPR, drawing Bimmo’s ire. Chaudhary progresses in his studies with help from inmates he has befriended, but struggles in Hindi as he seems to have dyslexic issues with respect to Hindi language and cannot visualize the alphabet. Bimmo meanwhile tries to make passing the exams difficult for Chaudhary, by arranging the release of the prisoner who is helping him with Science, and setting the Examination Time Table in such a way that Hindi exam comes first. Jyoti, beginning to see the change in character that the focus on education has brought on in Chaudhary, agrees to help him. As they make progress, they develop mutual respect.

Chaudhary’s bail application is processed and he is cleared for release, but Jyoti hides this from him so he can focus on his studies. Chaudhary appears for his exams but is uncertain of how he has performed. When he is released, he finds out about Jyoti hiding the sanctioning of his bail application. When Jyoti remarks how education has changed him for the better and advises him to help the public with his newly acquired education, Chaudhary brushes her off and tells her that he’ll never change; Jyoti is disappointed by his intransigence. But when Chaudhary returns to the political arena, he discovers that Bimmo has usurped the CM chair and he has no support in his own party. None of his ministers want to endanger their position by taking his side in the couple-struggle.

This makes Chaudhary join the coalition party in the government, and topples the government. General elections are declared, and all groups campgain vigorously. The election results and exam results are due on the same day. While votes are being counted, Chaudhary rushes back to jail to discover that he has passed the exams. As a token of gratitude, he gifts Jyoti a chair that he’d made in the workshop as her Gurudakshina (traditionally a gift given by a student to a teacher). His new party wins the election and Chaudhary reconciles with Bimmo. He refuses the Chief Minister post and chooses to become the Minister of Education instead. During his oath ceremony, he makes it a point to convey his gratitude to Jyoti and the other inmates who helped him clear the exams.

Abhishek Bachchan in Dasvi

  • Dasvi movie follows a jailed chief minister (Bachchan)
  • Gautam plays a cop, Kaur plays his wife on Dasvi
  • Though it’s a digital premiere, Dasvi is not a Netflix original

Dasvi is Netflix and JioCinema's next movie — it's out April 7 and stars Abhishek Bachchan, Yami Gautam, and Nimrat Kaur in the lead. On Wednesday, Netflix released the trailer for Dasvi, a comedy-drama that follows Chief Minister Ganga Ram Chaudhary (Bachchan) who is arrested in a teacher recruitment scam. After the police station chief Jyoti Deswal (Gautam) repeatedly embarrasses Ganga Ram who only studied till 8th grade in school, he vows to pass 10th grade exams — hence the movie's title, Dasvi is Hindi for 10th — while studying from jail. Meanwhile out in the world, Ganga Ram's wife Bimla Devi (Nimrat Kaur) is raised to the position of chief minister in his absence, and develops a liking for it.

The Dasvi trailer is full of songs — Ashish Pandit ( 83 ) provides the lyrics, while the music and background score come from the duo of Sachin Sanghvi and Jigar Saraiya, collectively known as Sachin–Jigar. In addition to Bachchan, Gautam, and Kaur, Manu Rishi Chadha is also part of the Dasvi cast.

Tushar Jalota makes his directorial debut on Dasvi. Previously, Jalota has served as an assistant or associate director on Padmaavat , Barfi!, and Ram Leela. On Dasvi, Jalota is working off a screenplay by Ritesh Shah (Pink, Airlift), Suresh Nair (Airlift), and producer Sandeep Leyzell. The story comes from Ram Bajpai.

Kabir Tejpal (Chutzpah) is the cinematographer, A. Sreekar Prasad (Talvar) is the editor, Mayur Barathe ( Criminal Justice ) is behind the production design, Sheetal Iqbal Sharma ( Mumbai Diaries 26/11 ) did the costumes on Dasvi, and Nitin Vasantrao Wable is the art director.

How US Right-Wing Social Media Influencers Became Russia's "Useful Idiots"

How US Right-Wing Social Media Influencers Became Russia's 'Useful Idiots'

Tenet Media, launched last year, presents itself as a platform for "heterodox views".

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has alleged that several prominent right-wing social media influencers were unknowingly part of a Russian operation designed to sway the 2024 US presidential elections, CNN reported. The influencers, who collectively reach millions of Americans, were allegedly used as "mouthpieces" for Russian propaganda without being aware of the foreign influence behind their financial support.

According to the report , court documents unsealed this week revealed that Russian state media funnelled nearly $10 million through a Tennessee-based online media company, identified by CNN as Tenet Media. The company employed well-known right-wing commentators such as Tim Pool, Benny Johnson, Lauren Southern, Tayler Hansen, Matt Christiansen, and Dave Rubin. While these individuals were not directly accused of wrongdoing, the indictment has shed light on how they may have unknowingly advanced Russian interests.

Two employees of Russian state media were charged with conspiracy to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) and money laundering. The DOJ states that Russia's goal was to push narratives that aligned with Kremlin objectives, such as promoting domestic political division, weakening US support for Ukraine, and boosting conservative figures like Donald Trump.

These individuals, unaware of their role in Russian operations, were described in Cold War terms as "useful idiots."

Tenet Media

Tenet Media, launched last year, presents itself as a platform for "heterodox views" on Western political and cultural issues. It was founded in 2022 by conservative Canadian YouTuber Lauren Chen and her husband Liam Donovan. The company has not responded to the allegations.

Its roster includes several former mainstream journalists turned independent creators, such as Tim Pool, who previously worked with Vice, and Benny Johnson, formerly of BuzzFeed and the Independent Journal Review. The outlet has grown in influence, hosting shows featuring far-right personalities and interviewing high-profile figures like Donald Trump.

Though the influencers claimed to retain full editorial control over their content, the DOJ alleges that the content they produced served Russia's interests. According to court documents, Russian state media employees from RT sought to exploit these influencers' vast audiences by amplifying pro-Russian narratives, including criticisms of US support for Ukraine and divisive discussions on LGBTQ issues.

While none of the commentators have been charged, the DOJ alleges that they were paid by Kremlin-controlled sources to promote content that benefitted Russian interests. At least three of the influencers have been contacted by the FBI for voluntary interviews.

What The Influencers said

Tim Pool, host of The Culture War Podcast, responded to the allegations by saying that he was a victim. "If these allegations prove true, I as well as the other personalities and commentators were deceived and are victims. I cannot speak for anyone else at the company as to what they do or to what they are instructed," Pool told his 2.1 million followers on X.

My statement regarding allegations and the DOJ Indictment Should these allegations prove true, I as well as the other personalities and commentators were deceived and are victims. I cannot speak for anyone else at the company as to what they do or to what they are instructed… — Tim Pool 🇺🇦 🇮🇱 (@Timcast) September 4, 2024

"Disturbed by the allegations in today's indictment, which make clear that myself and other influencers were victims in this alleged scheme," said Benny Johnson who has 2.7 million followers on X.

Our lawyers negotiated a standard, arms length deal, which was later terminated. We are disturbed by the allegations in today's… — Benny Johnson (@bennyjohnson) September 4, 2024

Dave Rubin, host of The Rubin Report, claimed that his show with Tenet Media ended months ago. "I and other commentators were the victims of this scheme. I knew absolutely nothing about any of this fraudulent activity," Rubin told his 1.5 million followers on X.

DOJ Action

The DOJ has charged two RT employees, Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva, with conspiracy to commit money laundering and violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act, the BBC reported.

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

The indictment accuses these individuals of overseeing funding and editorial operations while secretly directing Tenet Media's output to advance Russian interests. Despite the influencers' claims of independence, federal prosecutors assert that much of the content was strategically aligned with Russian efforts to amplify divisions within the US.

The indictment also alleges elaborate lengths to which the Russian operation went, including the creation of a fake Hungarian investor to mask RT's involvement and the high salaries paid to the influencers allegedly receiving up to $100,000 per video.
