Show results you have produced with content

To land a role as a social media director, it’s important to show the results you have accomplished for previous companies.    Highlight your social media experience and results

Hiring managers want to see that you have real experience managing social media accounts. Show this by including:

  • The specific social media platforms you've worked with (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok)
  • The size and type of accounts or communities you managed
  • Key accomplishments, backed up by metrics (e.g. Grew Instagram follower count from 10K to 50K in 6 months)

Avoid simply listing the platforms or making vague statements:

  • Managed social media accounts
  • Posted content on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter

Bullet Point Samples for Social Media Manager

Show your strategic and analytical skills

It's not enough to just post content. Companies want social media managers who take a data-driven, strategic approach. Demonstrate this with examples like:

  • Created and executed a social media strategy that increased engagement by 120%
  • Analyzed post performance data to optimize content and posting times, improving reach by 40%
  • Conducted audience research to develop targeted campaigns and personas

Skip the generic phrases that could apply to anyone:

  • Strategic thinker
  • Analytical skills
  • Created social media plans

Provide examples of engaging content you've created

Social media is all about content. Give specific examples of the top-performing content you've produced, such as:

  • Conceived and wrote a Twitter thread on [topic] that went viral with 10K+ retweets
  • Created a TikTok video that hit 1M views and drove 15K clicks to the company website
  • Developed a storytelling series on Instagram that doubled engagement rates

Don't just say you create great content - prove it with real examples hiring managers can relate to and visualize.

Showcase your brand voice and writing skills

Companies look for social media managers who can communicate in their unique brand voice. One way to showcase your writing abilities is with a compelling profile summary:

Creative and data-driven social media professional with 5+ years experience building engaged communities. Skilled at developing brand-aligned content strategies that drive awareness and sales. Known for sparking viral moments that get people talking.

Compare that to an overly formal, generic summary:

Results-oriented social media manager with a proven record of achieving KPIs and optimizing ROI. Experienced in leveraging key channels to maximize brand reach.

Let your personality and creativity shine through while keeping it concise and relevant.

Include relevant education, certifications, and skills

List any degrees, courses, or certifications related to social media, marketing, communications, or digital media. This could include:

  • Bachelor's in Marketing, Journalism, or Communications
  • Google Analytics Certification
  • HootSuite Social Media Certification
  • Online courses in social media marketing or content creation

Also include the key hard skills hiring managers look for:

  • Social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, etc.)
  • Social media management tools (Hootsuite, Sprout Social, etc.)
  • Analytics and reporting tools
  • Content creation and editing tools (Photoshop, Canva, video editing software)
  • Paid social media advertising

Adapt your resume for each job

Every company has different needs and a distinct culture, so adapt your resume accordingly:

  • Mirror the language and terms used in the job description
  • Emphasize the skills and experience they seem to value most
  • Show you understand their audience, industry and competitors
  • Align your tone and personality with what seems to fit their culture

A customized resume stands out more than a generic:

  • One-size-fits-all resume sent to every company
  • Resume that doesn't address the specific job requirements
  • Formal tone for a fun, casual startup

Taking the time to tailor your application shows you're truly interested and could be a good match.

The average recruiter spends less than a minute -- at most -- reviewing resumes. That’s why it’s incredibly important to know how to craft a resume that quickly shows that you’re the perfect person for the job. How exactly do you do that? We’ve gathered the top tips for creating a social media manager resume:

   Use strong, measurable achievements.

An essential part of social media management involves creating -- and communicating -- value. What better place to demonstrate this than on your resume? When crafting the bullet points in your work experience, make sure to prioritize accomplishments and roles where you had measurable impact. Use strong action verbs like “doubled” or “launched” and note quantitative KPIs such as “increased CTR by 140%”. If you have select experiences where your expertise really shines through, you can add a selected project experience under that work history to provide more details on how you contributed to the project’s success, and what you achieved.

Showcase relevant skills for social media management.

Use your skill section to highlight areas of expertise you have for social media management. To back up those skills, add bullets to your work experience section that show recruiters your ability to successfully apply those skills in the workplace. What skills should you emphasize? Social media managers need to know how to grow and engage communities, how to run successful market campaigns within budget, and how to test and report on those campaigns using analytical tools. We recommend that you include bullet points such as “Teamed with five analysts to launch a product,” which gives evidence of communication. Perhaps you have deep expertise in a certain social media software, or a knack for leading a fantastic product launch. It could be helpful to list out all your proudest accomplishments -- you might even surprise yourself with what you’ve done!

   Create an ATS-friendly resume.

As mentioned earlier, recruiters often use ATS software to narrow down their pool of applicants. Even if you’re applying for a smaller company that may not filter resumes, you should apply these best practices to get through and in front of a real (live) human!

  • Make sure that your document is easily readable and is in PDF.
  • Keep your text free of images, diagrams, tables, and unusual fonts.
  • Include relevant keywords from the job description, but be careful not to overdo it or make your language sound unnatural

Writing Your Social Media Manager Resume: Section By Section

header, 1. highlight your personal brand.

Your header is a great place to showcase your personal brand and give hiring managers a sense of who you are. Consider including:

  • Your full name
  • A professional email address that incorporates your name
  • Links to your professional social media profiles or portfolio website

By highlighting your online presence, you demonstrate that you practice what you preach when it comes to social media management.

Jane Doe, [email protected]
Jane Doe, Social Media Strategist | [email protected] | linkedin.com/in/janedoe | janedoe.com

2. Keep it concise and easy to read

While it's important to include key information in your header, you also want to keep it concise and easy to read. Avoid cluttering your header with unnecessary details or hard-to-read formatting.

  • Jane Doe | 123 Main St, Anytown, USA | 555-123-4567 | [email protected] | linkedin.com/in/janedoe | twitter.com/janedoe | facebook.com/janedoe | instagram.com/janedoe

Instead, focus on the most important details and use clean, easy-to-read formatting:

  • Jane Doe | [email protected] | 555-123-4567 | linkedin.com/in/janedoe

3. Tailor your title to the job

If you have a specific job title that aligns with the position you're applying for, consider including it in your header. This can help catch the hiring manager's attention and show that you're a strong fit for the role.

For example:

  • Jane Doe, Marketing Professional

While this title is relevant, it's a bit broad and doesn't speak directly to the social media manager role. Instead, try:

  • Jane Doe, Social Media Strategist
  • Jane Doe, Digital Marketing Specialist

These titles are more specific and aligned with the job at hand, making them more impactful.

  Summary

A resume summary for a Social Media Manager role is optional, but can be a strategic way to provide additional context about your skills and experience that may not be immediately obvious from the rest of your resume. This is especially true if you're making a career change into social media from another field, or if you're an experienced Social Media Manager with a lot of accomplishments to highlight.

However, be careful not to simply repeat information that's already covered in other sections of your resume. Instead, use the summary to provide a high-level overview of your most relevant qualifications and the value you can bring to the role. Aim to keep it concise - no more than a short paragraph. And never use an objective statement instead of a summary - employers care about what you can do for them, not what you want from them.

How to write a resume summary if you are applying for a Social Media Manager resume

To learn how to write an effective resume summary for your Social Media Manager resume, or figure out if you need one, please read Social Media Manager Resume Summary Examples , or Social Media Manager Resume Objective Examples .

1. Highlight your social media expertise

Use your summary to showcase your expertise in social media platforms, tools, and strategies. Mention specific platforms you've worked with and the types of campaigns you've run.

For example, instead of just saying:

  • Experienced social media professional

Provide more specific details like:

  • Skilled Social Media Manager with 5+ years of experience driving engagement and growth on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok through creative content and data-driven strategies.

Quantify your achievements where possible to give a sense of the scale of your impact.

2. Tailor your summary to the role

While it's good to mention your broad social media skills, also try to customize your summary to the specific Social Media Manager position you're applying for. Look for clues in the job description about what seem to be the most important qualities for the role and the company's social media goals.

For instance, if the job emphasizes social media advertising, you could say something like:

Results-oriented Social Media Manager well-versed in using paid social campaigns on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to acquire new customers and generate leads. Expertise in A/B testing ad creative, optimizing campaigns, and tracking ROI.

If the role is more focused on organic social growth and engagement, your summary might look more like:

Creative Social Media Manager with a talent for crafting compelling content that sparks conversations and builds passionate communities. Increased Instagram followers by 200% and average engagement rate by 150% for a D2C e-commerce brand.

After writing your resume summary, upload your resume to Score My Resume to get instant feedback on over 30 key criteria hiring managers look for, so you can ensure your summary and entire resume are as strong as possible.

3. Emphasize relevant soft skills and traits

In addition to your hard skills and experience, hiring managers also look for Social Media Managers with certain valuable soft skills and traits, like creativity, adaptability, communication skills, and a growth mindset. Find ways to work these in your summary by showing rather than telling.

Avoid simply listing soft skills, like saying:

  • Strong communicator and collaborator
  • Curious and always learning

Instead, demonstrate these qualities through your accomplishments and the language you use. For example:

  • Collaborated cross-functionally with marketing, product, and customer service teams to develop and execute social media campaigns that increased brand awareness and customer satisfaction scores.
  • Consistently stay up-to-date on the latest social media trends and best practices and experiment with new tactics to drive results.

Your LinkedIn profile is also a great place to showcase your expertise and passion for the social media field. Run your profile through LinkedIn Review to get personalized suggestions for optimizing it to impress social media hiring managers and recruiters.

  Experience

Your work experience section is one of the most important parts of your social media manager resume. It's where you show hiring managers how you've applied your skills in the real world and what kind of impact you've had in previous roles.

In this section, we'll walk you through the key steps to crafting a compelling work experience section that will help you stand out from other candidates and land your next social media manager job.

1. Focus on relevant social media experience

When writing your work experience section, it's important to focus on roles and responsibilities that are directly relevant to a social media manager position. This might include:

  • Managing social media accounts for a company or brand
  • Developing and executing social media strategies
  • Creating and curating engaging content for social platforms
  • Analyzing social media metrics and making data-driven decisions

If you have experience in other areas of marketing or communications, only include it if it's directly applicable to the social media manager role you're targeting. For example, if you've done email marketing in the past and used those skills to integrate email and social campaigns, that's worth mentioning.

Not sure if your resume is highlighting the right experience? Try running it through our Score My Resume tool to get instant feedback on how well it aligns with social media manager job descriptions.

2. Use strong, industry-specific action verbs

When describing your social media experience, use strong action verbs that showcase your skills and accomplishments. Avoid generic phrases like "responsible for" or "helped with." Instead, use industry-specific verbs like:

  • Developed and executed a social media strategy that increased followers by 50% in 6 months
  • Crafted engaging social media content that drove a 25% increase in website traffic
  • Monitored and analyzed social media metrics to optimize performance and inform strategy
Responsible for posting on social media and responding to comments.

A bland description like this doesn't convey the impact of your work. Instead, try something more specific and results-oriented:

Managed company's Twitter account, crafting engaging content that increased followers by 20% and drove a 15% uptick in website traffic from social referrals.

Need help finding the right words to capture your social media experience? Check out our list of powerful action verbs organized by skill and industry.

3. Quantify your impact with metrics

Wherever possible, use specific numbers and metrics to quantify the impact of your work. This helps hiring managers understand the scale and significance of your achievements. For example:

  • Grew Instagram followers from 5,000 to 25,000 over 12 months through strategic content and influencer partnerships
  • Increased engagement rate on Facebook posts by 40% by implementing a user-generated content campaign
  • Drove $50K in sales from social media referrals in Q4 by optimizing ad targeting and landing pages

If you don't have access to precise metrics, you can still provide context for your accomplishments by using general numbers or percentages, like:

  • Managed social media accounts with over 100,000 total followers
  • Created social media content that consistently ranked in the top 10% for engagement

Highlighting metrics on your resume can be a game-changer, but make sure your skills section is also optimized. Our Targeted Resume tool can help you identify the right keywords to include for a specific social media manager job.

4. Showcase your career progression

Hiring managers love to see candidates who have grown and progressed in their careers. If you've been promoted or taken on increasing responsibility in your previous social media roles, make sure to highlight that in your work experience section.

For example, you might have a progression like:

  • Social Media Coordinator, XYZ Company (2018-2019)
  • Social Media Specialist, XYZ Company (2019-2021)
  • Senior Social Media Manager, XYZ Company (2021-Present)

In this case, you'd want to include a brief description of your key responsibilities and achievements at each level to show how you've developed your skills over time. Focus on the most relevant and impactful items for each role.

When highlighting your career progression, be sure to bold your job titles so they stand out to recruiters and hiring managers who may be quickly scanning your resume.

  Education

The education section of your resume is where you highlight your academic achievements and training. It's an important part of your resume, especially if you're a recent graduate or changing careers. Here are some tips to help you write an effective education section for your social media manager resume.

How To Write An Education Section - Social Media Manager Roles

1. List your degrees in reverse chronological order

Start with your most recent degree first. Include the name of the institution, location, degree earned, and graduation date (or expected graduation date). For example:

Bachelor of Arts in Communications University of California, Los Angeles Graduated: May 2020

If you have multiple degrees, list them in order with the most recent one first. Avoid listing degrees that are not relevant to the social media manager position.

2. Include relevant coursework and projects

If you're a recent graduate or have limited work experience, you can bolster your education section by listing relevant coursework, projects, or extracurricular activities. This shows the employer that you have the skills and knowledge needed for the job. For example:

  • Relevant coursework: Social Media Marketing, Digital Analytics, Content Strategy
  • Capstone project: Developed and executed a social media campaign for a local nonprofit, resulting in a 20% increase in followers and engagement

Be specific and quantify your achievements when possible. Avoid listing coursework or projects that are not directly related to social media or marketing.

3. Keep it concise if you're a senior-level candidate

If you have several years of work experience, your education section should be brief. Include only the essential information, such as your degree, institution, and graduation year (optional). For example:

MBA, Marketing Harvard University

Avoid listing outdated or irrelevant degrees, coursework, or awards. Your work experience and accomplishments should be the main focus of your resume.

On the other hand, here's an example of what not to do:

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology, XYZ University, 1985-1989
  • Relevant coursework: Intro to Biology, Organic Chemistry, Genetics
  • Dean's List, Fall 1986

We’ll offer expert tips to help translate your experience into an engaging social media manager resume.

1. Write a brief summary of your social media qualifications

To grab the hiring manager’s attention, you’ll need to create an eye-catching professional profile at the top of your resume. Your summary of qualifications should provide a concise yet compelling snapshot of your career . Be sure to incorporate three to four specializations that align with the job description, as this will show companies you’re qualified for the role immediately upon reviewing your resume.

Professional Profile - Example #1

Professional profile - example #2, 2. outline your social media experience in a compelling list.

To build a strong professional experience section, incorporate hard numbers, metrics, and monetary figures into your bullet points. This is especially important for social media managers, as your chances of landing an interview increase drastically if you can augment your achievements with compelling data. Also, emphasize your experience developing strategies for social media and digital marketing, as this is essential for senior-level roles.

Professional Experience - Example #1

  • Manage all marketing activities for an enterprise company valued at $20 million, including social media, content creation, search engine optimization (SEO), and search engine marketing (SEM)

Certifications in content marketing and public relations are also important for defining brand messaging and driving user engagement.

What is a social media manager resume and why do you need one?

A social media manager resume is a document created by someone looking for a social media manager role within a company’s marketing team.

This document lists out skills and accomplishments that make the job seeker suitable for the role they’re applying for. Some of the major elements of a social media manager’s resume include:

  • Personal information: Include your name, contact information, and public social media profiles
  • Objective/summary: Explain the purpose of your resume (i.e., to get a job as a social media manager) and why your skills make you the perfect candidate
  • Work experience: Include experience directly related to the role you’re applying to, whether it’s past jobs, internships, etc.
  • Skills: List out any skills you have that pertain specifically to the job description of the role you’re applying for
  • Accomplishments: Share any big results you’ve gotten for a client or company to prove your expertise
  • References: Many companies like to call references—past employers/colleagues/classmates—to get an idea of your work ethic and skills before bringing you on board

A resume is an important document that helps hiring managers understand which applicants might be right for the role at a glance. Creating a resume is a key step in getting a new job, so you want to spend enough time to make sure you’ve catered it towards each role you apply for.

Your resume isn’t a one-and-done project. We’ll talk more about this later, but you’ll want to adjust it to fit each role you apply for based on what each company has specifically listed in its job description.

How to make a social media manager resume

We’ve touched on some of the most important parts of a resume for a social media manager position. But let’s dive deeper and help you pull together a resume that’s going to land you an interview.

We’ll use one of our templates to walk through each section of a good social media manager’s resume and how to fully flesh it out.

Personal information

The very top of your resume should include your personal information—who you are and how interested companies can get in touch with you. Start by putting your name in big letters at the very top of your resume. (This is all about you, after all.)

The very top of your social media manager resume should include your personal information—who you are and how interested companies can get in touch with you

You can then include information like:

  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Public social media platforms
  • Professional headshot

This gives potential employees all of the upfront information they need to get in contact with you about the role. Place all of this information at the very top of your resume. You can also include it in a sidebar if you use that element in your resume design.

Objective/summary

This section is optional but is a great way to provide a quick snippet of your expertise before the hiring manager even dives deeper into your resume. If you choose to add either or both an objective or summary, follow these tips.

The About Me or Objective section should mention your social media manager resume’s intentions or why you’re applying for the role.

Your objective should mention your resume’s intentions or why you’re applying for the role. This could be as simple as “To get a social media manager role for a company I admire.”

However, as with everything in a competitive job landscape, try to take it a step further. Create goals for yourself in this role. Say something like, “To help an eCommerce company use their social media channels to improve customer retention and reach $1MM ARR.”

Your summary highlights your professional accomplishments and why you’re the best person for the job. If you decide to include this, make sure to cater it to each job you apply for, using key terms from the job description in case the company uses resume-scanning software.

Place your objective and/or summary right below the header of your resume.

Work experience

The next section is where you include your work experience. However, you don’t need to include all of your work experience—just the ones that are relevant to the job you’re applying for.

Even if you’re applying for an entry-level social media manager role, your high school jobs don’t need to be listed here (unless they directly apply to the position, like helping with a local company’s social media profiles or working in customer service).

In the experience section of your social media manager resume, include all of your past (relevant) roles in reverse chronological order.

List these in reverse chronological order starting with your most recent position. Include information like:

  • Your job title
  • Name of the company/organization
  • Location in city/state format (or type “Remote”)
  • Time period you worked there
  • Description of your main tasks at this position

In your description, include tasks that pertain directly to the role you’re applying for as well as any major results you may have achieved for the company. This will help position you in a better light for the role you’re applying for.

If you have a college degree related to your field, you can input your education here. If your degree was in a different field and you’ve pivoted to marketing, consider omitting this section or using it to share details of any marketing-related certifications you may have picked up along the way.

The education section of your social media manager resume is laid out in a similar fashion to your work experience: reverse chronological order with your major, school, location, and time spent at the school.

Your education will be laid out in a similar fashion to your work experience: reverse chronological order with your major, school, location, and time spent at the school. If you choose to include certifications, share the name of the certification, where you received it, and when.

Potential employers want to know what your top skills are, and they can be difficult to ascertain just from descriptions of your past employment. This is why you’ll want to create a section that shows off your best skills—as well as your proficiency in some of the skills listed in the job description.

Create a section of your social media manager resume that shows off your best skills—as well as your proficiency in some of the skills listed in the job description

There are a couple of ways to showcase your top skills:

  • Use a progress bar to demonstrate your skill level with each
  • Include descriptors like “Beginner,” “Intermediate,” “Advanced,” or “Expert”
  • Share a simple list of skills that are relevant to the job description
  • Create a header for each skill and describe your experience in bullet points below

Again, be sure to only list skills that are relevant to the job you’re applying to. Bonus points if you list skills that are specifically mentioned in the job description (but only if you’re actually skilled in those areas).

Other items

There are a few other items that you might decide to add to your resume to further set yourself apart from other applicants.

Leave room for other interesting and relevant information on your resume, like notable achievements, certifications, or hobbies.

Those include things like:

  • Accomplishments
  • Certifications
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Hobbies and interests
  • Volunteer work
  • Special awards
  • Publications
  • Big projects
  • Languages you speak

Don’t make your resume too busy—but be sure to highlight any special skills you bring to the table.

Social media manager resume template

If you’re ready to get started creating your own social media manager resume, it’s a good idea to start with a template. This takes the grunt work out of creating your resume and gives you a starting point for where each of your resume sections should go.

To start inputting your own information, download our free social media manager resume templates now.

These Google Doc templates can be fully customized to fit your skills and personal brand.

While you’ll need to update all of the text within the template, a few other elements you might want to change include:

  • Letter case
  • Letter style/weight

Make sure your resume represents you and your skill set perfectly so you can start getting calls or emails from hiring managers to set up interviews.

Best practices for your social media manager resume

Let’s make sure your resume is the favorite of the bunch. Keep these best practices in mind to help your social media manager resume stand out and get you an interview.

1. Quantify your achievements

Have you helped a company generate a ton of followers? Did you run an ad campaign that brought in a lot of sales?

Put it on your resume!

But do you know what sounds better than “a ton of followers” or “a lot of sales?” Numbers. Quantify your achievements by being specific.

For example:

  • Grew XYZ’s Instagram followers by 100,000
  • Ran a retargeting Instagram ad that generated $25k in sales
  • Increased social media engagement by 25%

Don’t those statements sound much more gratifying? The numbers are also going to grab attention and help you make an even bigger impact with the hiring manager.

2. Use compelling action verbs

Passive statements like “Duties include this, that, and the other thing” have become commonplace in resume-writing. But compelling action verbs read much better.

  • Achieved a positive ROI in 97% of all ad campaigns
  • Executed a cohesive social media strategy across six different platforms
  • Managed a four-person marketing team

These action verbs make your resume sound even more powerful, helping to position you as a stellar candidate.

3. Make sure it’s ATS-friendly

ATS stands for “application tracking system,” and it’s a common tool for large companies to use when reviewing hundreds (or even thousands) of applicants and resumes. This software scans resumes (like we mentioned earlier) and helps hiring managers to pinpoint the closest matches.

This is why it’s so important to cater your resume to specific job descriptions, making sure you use keywords from their list of qualifications, responsibilities, and requirements.

A few tips to make an ATS-friendly resume include:

  • Use the job title as your headline (right below your name)
  • Add relevant skills you found in the job description
  • Create a simple PDF resume that isn’t too graphical or the software can’t read it
  • Use traditional resume headlines and formatting

While you want to stand out, doing so with your resume design isn’t always the best option. Instead, use your words to help your resume make the cut in a company’s ATS.

4. Use bullet points

Use bullet points to describe your work experience rather than paragraphs. It’s easier to read and will help you get past the ATS.

When adding bullet points, stick to 5 or 6 maximum .

  • Adding too many bullet points can make your resume too long
  • It can also give hiring managers too much to read through.
  • Keep it short and succinct, using your bullet points to highlight your biggest achievements and the biggest parts of each role.

(And yes, these bullet points are too long for a resume—but wasn’t that easier to read?)

5. Stick to a single page

Try to keep your resume to just one page . If you have 10-15+ years of experience, it’s okay to go up to two if needed, but a single-page resume is the most common and readable length.

You can use a sidebar or two-column design to help make the most of your space, reduce the number of bullet points you use, remove your education section, or decrease the number of relevant jobs you share.

Also make sure your header isn’t taking up too much space on the page. You want to maximize the amount of information you can share within a single page without making it too cluttered.

Social Media Manager resume example

Writing a Social Media Manager resume is like learning a new social media platform. When new platforms emerge, it's up to social media managers to learn their intricacies to understand how content gets views and likes.

You can approach writing your Social Media Manager Resume with the same mindset. To get views and responses from employers, you first need to understand what works and what doesn't.

Although managing social media emerged with the dawn of Myspace, it's still relatively new as a recognized profession. Therefore, established norms and industry standards for Social Media Manager resumes remain somewhat limited.

This resume guide, including examples and pro tips, will address all of these and more to help you craft a resume that gets as much attention as your social media campaigns.

Digital and Social Copywriting Certified Professional resume example

Here’s what this applicant does well in their resume:

  • Quantifiable achievements: Demonstrates success through specific metrics, like a 120% increase in engagement and a 55% rise in social media advertising ROI, effectively showcasing their impact.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: Highlights teamwork skills by mentioning work with developers, designers, and other departments to achieve impressive results, such as launching a custom quiz platform and viral campaigns.
  • Budget and campaign management: Shows expertise in handling significant budgets and executing successful campaigns, managing a $2M social media budget, and fostering partnerships with top industry brands.

How to format a social media manager  resume

Navigating content saturation is a typical challenge in social media management. The sheer volume of content can make standing out and maintaining audience engagement challenging. This is similar to the challenge of creating resumes that get noticed in a crowd of applicants.

Your resume's formatting is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your creativity and copywriting skills to make a positive first impression on potential employers.

Include these essential elements when formatting your social media manager resume:

  • Creative Elements: Include creative elements , like colors, unique fonts, and decorative designs, to make your resume unique and memorable.
  • Header Content: A prominent header  featuring your name, desired job title, and contact information  ensures they stand out to employers at a glance.
  • Social Media Link: Provide links to your professional social media accounts , such as LinkedIn, to evidence your skills on these platforms.
  • Ordering: List all examples in your resume sections in reverse chronological order  to ensure your most recent and relevant appear first.
  • Proofreading: Impeccable spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills are vital when managing social media content, and your resume is your first opportunity to demonstrate these skills.

When formatting, consider your resume profile the same way you would a brand’s social media profile. Consistency in brand voice and messaging is essential on social media, just as cohesive formatting is on your resume.

Understanding web crawlers and keyword analytics is a critical skill for social media managers.

ATS (applicant tracking systems) perform a similar role on resumes. ATS analyzes text on resumes, looking for keywords or phrases corresponding to desired skills and qualifications for a specific job. Employers use these systems to quickly sort and prioritize resumes to consider the most qualified candidates.

Review these best practices for ATS-optimized formatting on your social media manager resume:

  • Fonts: Select ATS-friendly fonts matching the overall style of your resume. Some ATS-friendly fonts are Calibri, Arial, and Times New Roman. However, these commonly used fonts can be dull or generic. For more creative font options, try Rubik, Lato, Montserrat, Raleway, Exo 2, and Volkhov, which are all available on the Enhancv Resume Builder.
  • Document Type: Doc or PDF files  are typical for resumes and most easily analyzed by ATS.
  • Creative Elements in Text: Avoid using nonessential stylistic features within text. Elements such as emojis and non-standard date formats can impede ATS’ ability to recognize information in these sections.
  • Headings and Subheadings: Ensure resume sections are organized and include simple, precise headings. Standard section titles ensure ATS accurately recognizes and extracts information from these sections.

To improve the organization and ATS optimization of your social media manager resume, include the following top-recommended sections:

The top sections on a social media manager resume:

  • Professional Summary: Briefly summarizing your Social Media Management background and providing a broad overview of your skills and expertise.
  • Core Skills: Highlighting keyword strengths offers hiring managers a quick overview of specific competencies in social media management aligned with the job requirements.
  • Career History: Offering vital information about related roles and shedding light on practical experiences gained and accomplishments made in these positions.
  • Social Media Project Portfolio: Showcasing successful campaigns and social media strategies implemented as tangible evidence of your capabilities.
  • Certifications/Training: Indicating you possess the current knowledge and skills in social media best practices and evidencing your commitment to continuous growth and learning.

The ever-changing nature of social media management means candidates have unique backgrounds and qualifications. However, these highly sought-after qualifications should be included on your resume whenever possible:

What recruiters want to see on your resume:

  • Proven Experience in Social Media Management: Past successful experience is a critical factor that indicates the potential for success in similar roles.
  • Knowledge of Content Management Systems: Understanding and familiarity with these systems show that the candidate can create, manage, and optimize the company's social media platforms.
  • Strong Creative Skills: Creative skills are necessary for developing engaging and innovative content, ensuring the audience remains engaged and business objectives are met.
  • Understanding of SEO and Analytics: These skills show that the candidate can analyze the performance of social media campaigns and make data-driven decisions.
  • Exceptional Copywriting Skills: Clear and compelling writing is essential when creating social media posts that engage and inspire the audience.

How to write your social media manager resume experience

Resumes are like Twitter. An applicant must make a significant impact using as few characters as possible. It's essential to keep this concept in mind when writing your resume's experience section .

A common mistake in the experience section is overlooking opportunities to highlight skills and accomplishments rather than simply naming tasks handled. For example, a social media manager may demonstrate efficiency using social media management tools or show off outcomes resulting from a successful campaign strategy.

Check out how this experience example is improved by concentrating on skill development and achievements over duties performed.

  • • Created an Instagram marketing campaign to increase sales.
  • • Oversaw Facebook content strategy to increase in engagement.
  • • Utilized A/B testing methodology across social media ad campaigns
  • • Managed customer service responses on social media platforms according to customer satisfaction standards.

This example lets the employer know the applicant's experience handling particular responsibilities. However, it does little to demonstrate how successful they were or how active a role they played in achieving objectives.

  • • Conceptualized and executed an Instagram marketing campaign that directly contributed to $100,000 in sales within two months.
  • • Created a targeted content strategy resulting in a 50% increase in engagement on the company's Facebook page within three months.
  • • Introduced A/B testing methodology for social media ad campaigns, leading to a 20% improvement in conversion rates and a more efficient use of advertising budget.
  • • Implemented a streamlined customer service process, reducing response time on social media platforms by 40% and enhancing overall customer satisfaction.

The revised example provides excellent quantitative evidence of their success by including numbers and statistics. Additionally, they use action verbs , like “created” and “implemented,” to share achievements resulting from their initiatives. The result is a compelling description utilizing more keyword phrases.

Another consideration to make the most of the limited space in your experience section is creating a targeted experience section . Not every work experience highlights skills relevant to every available position. Therefore, selecting examples highlighting skills aligned with particular employment opportunities is best.

To quickly and easily create a targeted Social Media Manager resume for each employment opportunity, follow these steps:

  • Create a resume template including a complete list of your experiences, certifications, education, and skills.
  • Make a copy of the template for each new application.
  • Review the job description for each new job you apply to, paying close attention to ideal candidate descriptions.
  • In the new copy, delete all examples not aligned with the job description.
  • Edit remaining examples to ensure they include keywords  from the job description for increased ATS optimization.

How to quantify the impact on your resume

When demonstrating your accomplishments, numbers, and statistics  speak louder than words.

Thanks to the critical role of analytics in social media management, demonstrating efficiency and impact with data should be a breeze.

Here are a few outstanding ways to incorporate quantitative evidence in your experience descriptions:

  • The number of social media followers you've garnered for brands demonstrates your ability to grow an audience.
  • How many content pieces you've produced weekly or monthly illustrates your diligence and efficiency in quickly producing large amounts of content.
  • A percentage increase in audience engagement highlights your capacity to cultivate meaningful interactions.
  • The number of platforms managed simultaneously exhibits your ability to multitask and handle numerous platforms.
  • Click-through rates on posts and campaigns indicate your ability to create content that directs traffic.

When giving statistics, name the social media management and analytics tools used to acquire the data, such as Hootsuite, Sprout Social, and Google Analytics, to demonstrate your capabilities using them.

How do I write a social media manager resume with no experience

Even without formal employment as a social media manager, most applicants have extensive social media experience. The key to writing your experience section without employment experience  is to focus on alternative experiences, such as managing your social media accounts or working on projects that highlight the same skills and achievements.

Follow these steps to convey your skills and qualifications without prior social media management experience:

  • Compile a list of keywords from the job description.
  • Brainstorm previous social media experiences showcasing the same keyword skills and knowledge from your list. These could be experiences from school, an internship, working with a non-profit, helping a friend or family member, freelancing, or working on a personal passion project.
  • Whenever possible, provide samples of your work. (See the portfolio section for more info on showcasing your work)
  • To add credibility, include tangible evidence of transferable skills, such as relevant education and certifications.
  • Include quantifiable data, if available, to demonstrate your efficacy.
  • Avoid including  irrelevant work experiences  or outdated experiences.
  • Always list experiences in reverse chronological order to ensure your most recent and relevant examples appear first.

W ithout employment experience , your cover letter is an excellent opportunity to give further detail about past jobs and describe how skills and knowledge acquired outside the field are transferable to the open position.

How to list your hard skills and soft skills on your resume

The skills section  of your social media manager resume serves as a quick reference indicating your suitability for a position. It should demonstrate your hard skills, such as proficiency in many different social media platforms and tools, as well as soft skills that will help you succeed.

Hard skills

Hard skills  are skills necessary to perform a particular job. Typically, they require study, training, and practice. In social media, these skills are often technical expertise  with platforms and tools and strategic marketing skills.

When considering which skills to include on your resume, consult this list of the top hard skills for social media managers:

Best hard skills for your social media manager resume

  • Social Media Platform Management
  • Content Creation
  • SEO Implementation
  • Social Media Advertising and Marketing
  • Graphic Design
  • Video Editing

  • Negative Feedback and Crisis Management skills

Soft skills

Soft skills  are sometimes overlooked on social media manager resumes. However, they provide an incredible opportunity to distinguish yourself from other candidates.

Soft skills are the intrinsic, personal skills that demonstrate what makes you uniquely qualified to succeed in a role. For example, adaptability is a vital soft skill for social media managers since they must cope with frequent algorithm updates on platforms that affect content visibility and require updated campaign strategies.

These are some of the top soft skills employers look for in social media managers:

Best soft skills for your social media manager resume

  • Communication
  • Adaptability
  • Organizational Skills
  • Decision Making
  • Customer Service
  • Problem-Solving
  • Multitasking
  • Collaboration
  • Time Management
  • Analytical Thinking
  • Dependability
  • Critical Thinking
  • Flexibility
  • Detail Oriented

Follow these steps to write a superb skills section:

  • Format your skills section as a simple list without elaboration or examples.
  • Differentiate between hard and soft skills by listing them in separate subsections.
  • Target your skills section using keyword skills from the job description.
  • Write keyword skills precisely as they appear in the job description to enhance ATS analysis.
  • Never lie about or exaggerate your skills on your resume.
  • Keep your experience and skills sections consistent. List the skills mentioned in the experience section on your skills list and demonstrate how you’ve developed skills in your experience descriptions.

How to list your certifications and education on your resume

The digital landscape, including social media, changes rapidly with new platforms, algorithms, rules, and features. Sharing ongoing learning and up-to-date certifications is an incredible way to verify hard skills and corroborate soft skills, like dedication to continuous improvement.

To share relevant certifications  on your social media manager resume, follow these steps:

  • Include the name of the certification, the certifying institution, and the year obtained.
  • Limit certifications to current, unexpired credentials. For example, if you completed a Twitter (X) certification before 2022, it would no longer be relevant due to the vast changes the platform has undergone since changing ownership.
  • Limit your certifications to only those specifically named or directly related to the required skills mentioned in a job description.

For some of the most sought-after certifications for social media managers, consult the list below.

Best certifications for your social media manager resume

  • HubSpot Academy Social Media Marketing Course
  • Hootsuite Academy Social Media Marketing Certification
  • Cornell University’s Social Media Marketing Certificate LinkedIn Learning: Social Media Marketer Learning Path
  • Facebook Blueprint Certification Google Digital Garage (Fundamentals of digital marketing)
  • Pinterest Academy
  • LinkedIn Learning (Various Courses)
  • Social Media Marketing Professional Certificate by Coursera (offered by Meta)
  • Social Media Strategist Certification by the National Institute for Social Media

There's no established degree requirement for social media managers, and many social media managers develop their skills through self-teaching or hands-on experience. However, according to Socialinsider , 50% of social media managers hold a bachelor's degree. The most common areas of study for these degrees are marketing, journalism, communications, creative writing, and graphic design.

Sharing your relevant education demonstrates your foundational knowledge and specialized skills that employers value. Additionally, it's vital to include your education when a degree requirement is stated in a job post.

To include an education section on your social media manager resume, follow these steps:

  • For each degree, include the name of the university, its location, the dates attended, and the title of your degree.
  • Including your GPA is optional unless the job description specifies a minimum GPA requirement.
  • Only include your major and minor  if relevant to the open position.

Here's an example of how your education section should appear on your resume:

How to write your social media manager resume summary or objective

Social media managers often have diverse experiences handling a myriad of tasks, working on multiple platforms, and collaborating with diverse people and brands. For this reason, it's essential to form a narrative illustrating how your career progression makes you uniquely qualified for a job.

A summary or objective section, sometimes called " Resume Profiles " or " Personal Statements ," allows you to briefly summarize the facts and data on your resume to explain how your background and goals are suitable for a particular job.

The difference between a summary and an objective is that a summary describes how your past employment experiences align with the opportunity. In contrast, an objective demonstrates how your future career goals correspond.

A summary is preferable if you have extensive social media management experience or closely related experience, such as working with a similar industry or brand. To highlight how your past success indicates your potential to be successful in the new job.

To write a resume summary , follow these best practices:

  • Highlight your most relevant skills or experiences that directly overlap with the job description.
  • Write an impactful description using keywords  directly from the job description.
  • Be brief. A summary should only be 3-5 sentences.

When writing a summary section with well-aligned industry experience, ensure your summary explicitly presents your related expertise and skills. A common mistake is writing a summary that is too general when a targeted summary would be more effective.

Check out how targeting this example summary to the hospitality field makes it more compelling.

This summary is well formatted and highlights excellent skills for a social media manager. However, it is too broad and could be applied to nearly any social media manager position, resulting in missed opportunities to incorporate industry-specific keywords and stand out to employers.

This summary improves upon the previous example by sharing specifics of their work in the hospitality industry. It incorporates targeted keywords and details significant hospitality-specific achievements such as “boosting bookings” and “enhancing guest experiences.” The resulting summary will stand out to any hospitality company seeking a social media manager.

Additional sections for a social media manager resume

In addition to the top-resume sections  above, including additional resume sections  is an excellent strategy to present additional qualifications or accomplishments and stand out from other applicants.

These optional sections are highly relevant for social media manager resumes:

  • Social Media Platform Proficiency: Specifying your level of proficiency with the various social media platforms helps establish your diverse skillset and level of expertise with each.
  • Languages: Social media managers often must cater to diverse audiences, and understanding the preferences, behaviors, and expectations of different demographics. Therefore, highlighting language skills and fluency on your resume is a significant asset.
  • My Time: This section breaks down a typical work day or week, demonstrating your time management and task prioritization skills. For an example of this section, see the resume example above.
  • References: While not always necessary on a resume,  references from former clients  or employers can be impactful, especially for those whose experience is primarily in freelancing. These references should substantiate your stated skills and achievements.

Individualizing your resume with tailored sections will ensure it reflects your top qualifications and provide additional opportunities to include targeted keywords. Should you include sections other than those above, be sure they use catchy, ATS-friendly headings .

How to include a portfolio on your social media manager resume

Proving ROI and engagement on social media campaigns can be especially hard without visuals. That's one reason a portfolio is a vital tool for social media managers.

A portfolio allows you to showcase your related skills, projects, and accomplishments and provide potential employers with tangible demonstrations of your capabilities and work quality.

Here are a few key elements to consider when creating a portfolio section:

  • Your portfolio should contain examples of successful social media campaigns, content creation, and analytics reports that demonstrate your skills.
  • Your portfolio can also contain achievements and awards to demonstrate outstanding abilities and accomplishments.
  • When possible, include examples of real-time management skills in responding to online complaints or trolling since a social media manager's role may involve handling crises.
  • Format your portfolio section with the heading "Portfolio," a short description, and a link to your online portfolio.

This example illustrates how your portfolio section should appear on your resume:

An additional benefit of a portfolio is that it provides an additional opportunity to include information that doesn't fit within the limited space of your resume. However, not all employers will view your portfolio, and ATS will not analyze your portfolio for keywords. Therefore, your relevant skills and qualifications must be included in your resume.

Key takeaways

Creating engaging content is critical in social media management. These key takeaways will help you approach your social media manager resume with the same mindset applied to creating social media campaigns to garner engagement from potential employers:

  • Like social media content, you must target your resume's skills and experiences to your audience by including only relevant examples for a particular position.
  • Your resume's formatting demonstrates essential skills such as creativity, attention to detail, and copywriting abilities.
  • ATS works in much the same way web crawlers analyze online content. Optimization requires close attention to relevant keywords and formatting to ensure your resume reaches employers.
  • Your experience descriptions should include relevant quantitative evidence of your success in previous social media campaigns.
  • Include both hard and transferable soft skills, using precise wording for enhanced ATS optimization.
  • List relevant education and certifications to demonstrate your knowledge and dedication to staying current with changes in social media.
  • Include a portfolio section to showcase prior successful campaigns.

What does a social media manager do?

Social media requires a targeted approach to a specific audience. Perfecting the message and mechanics of your resume works in much the same way. Consider how massive the market is, with the number of daily social media users reaching 4.8 billion at last count. With every person spending an average of three hours online, it might seem that hard to reach your audience. But social media managers are not only competing with their direct rivals.

Social media managers build their communities by engaging, informing and inspiring their audience. They take their brand on a social media journey by getting internal stakeholders to buy in to their strategy and cultivating a culture of employee advocacy within their company.

Creativity is critical in the production of content, but it does not come without an analytical eye and a focus on profitability (or brand positioning if your company doesn’t use social media marketing for direct sales). Efficient organization and the ability to prioritize tactical decisions are key to success. No wonder managing social media is one of the most popular roles in the new online economy.

The social media manager job outlook

Opportunities for experience social media managers are increasing alongside the above-average annual growth rate of activity in their industry. Given that many companies are still catching up with the growth, it is a role that will be in high demand for many years to come. Employers are not only looking to understand whether someone is a fit for their culture; they want to see whether applicants are able to capture their brand “voice.”

Buffer reported in 2019 that 73% of marketers believe their efforts through social media marketing have been “somewhat effective” or “very effective” for their business. This underlines the rising importance of social media marketing as a business tool and the corresponding managers - as vitally important specialists.

Social Media Manager - A social media manager resume

How to write a social media manager resume

Your social media resume should follow the same commonly used resume structure that applies to all occupations, including these components:

  • Employment history section
  • Education section
  • Skills section

Before we delve deeper into each of these resume sections shortly, here are some general considerations.

When you are fighting for attention on social media, everyone is your competitor. Social media managers need to adapt their message to specific platforms and audiences. When writing your resume, there are some similar considerations:

  • Understanding the specifics of your market
  • Getting past the ATS in a keyword-driven industry
  • Communicating the balance between skills and behaviors.

With engagement being prioritized over metrics such as “likes” and “shares” (easily faked), communicating in the right voice is critical to turn customers into loyal fans. A potential employer’s first experience of that voice will be in your resume. But what elements of the role should you include?

Social Media Manager - How can you beat the ATS test?

How can you beat the ATS algorithm?

You are used to beating the social algorithms. Now it is time to hone your resume to beat the job search algorithm. Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) act as online screening tools by analyzing resumes for keywords. Each section of your resume has a certain number of terms relevant to the employer, the hiring manager and the job application. Applicants who understand how an ATS works have an actual chance of delivering their resume to human eyes, so the recruiters can see and evaluate them.

The keywords for a social media manager resume will vary depending on the demands of the role. One employer might focus on certain platforms and media, while another might take an entirely different approach. Researching how they reach their audience and sprinkling your resume with the keywords that the hiring manager may have specified will be crucial to passing the first stage of the selection process.

In many of our resume writing guides, we suggest researching the employer’s website and/or social media page to better understand the job application. For you, this is doubly important, as you’ll be working with these tools. Analyze the employer's social media presence to better understand not only the professional skills being sought, but even the questions you’ll be asked during your interview.

The ATS system impacts your resume's summary and skills sections the most, where you provide descriptive terms of your professional character and skill-set. The trick to a great resume with a natural flow is to balance the need for inserting the necessary keywords without making it all look artificial.

Choosing the best resume format for social media

The most commonly used, failsafe chronological resume format is ideal for structuring most resumes. It will likely work well for most social media managers also, by providing a straightforward overview of your career highlights in the employment history section.

But if the social media position you’re pursuing would be a radical departure, or your job background has not followed a linear path of employee positions, you might want to consider another resume format . The functional resume format is sometimes suitable for those who have worked independently in contract or consulting roles and want to emphasize specific skills, projects or clients. In other instances, a hybrid resume structure combining chronological and functional elements makes the most sense.

Resume summary example: your core message

Often, the number of words you have available to convey your message on social media is limited. The summary of your social media manager resume, sometimes called the profile or personal statement , shows how well you can craft your own elevator pitch. It is arguably the most important part of your resume. Although an ATS will scan every word from start to finish, the summary is sometimes all that a human might read in detail. (It’s not unusual for resume readers to merely skim through the employment history and skills sections.)

Your resume summary is essentially a story of your expertise and character. Its free-form nature allows for maximal creative expression. Every employer knows this is the place where job seekers can succinctly pitch their added value, and every ATS algorithm will place extra weight on the keywords you include. Therefore, choose your words very carefully.

In addition to making your skills shine in the separate resume section dedicated for that purpose (we’ll cover that later), it's impossible to write a great summary without mentioning them.. But it's also important here to give your future employer.

By all means highlight your industry expertise. If your summary does not paint a picture of a social media expert, there is no chance that anyone will read further. You need to make your potential employer think, “Wow, I wish someone would do that for us.” If you make hiring managers envious and curious, they will want to arrange an interview to learn more, and your resume has done its first important job.

Take your lead from the posted job description. This is your starting point when it comes to keywords. The more similar terms and connections there are between the job description and your resume summary, the more likely you will pass the ATS test.

Word clouds are useful software to pick out hidden patterns from the posted job description text and can inform how you present yourself. Research the platforms that the prospective employer uses, look at its current activity and make sure that your resume summary mirrors whatever is working best for the organization. You might even detect some potential room for improvement.

Use the resume summary to show off your human side. Just as a list of keywords would never work as a social post, it’s imperative that your resume summary makes the prospective employer feel something. If you can’t achieve that in those first few resume lines, how will you persuade recruiters of your ability to craft social media content that stands out from the masses? The best social media managers are not afraid to show the humanity and humility of their brands. Make sure you do that in your resume summary section.

Below is a social media manager resume example summary you can customize.

Customer-led social media manager with twelve years of B2B experience in the recruitment and hospitality industries. Increased conversions by 150%, CTR 49% and social web referrals by 41% across various clients. I have created a social media department ab initio with Company X and Y and integrated social advocacy programs into both businesses. I am a content creator, a dynamic organizer and a savvy strategist. I understand the levers that I need to pull to maximize the financial impact of my social campaigns.

Employment history sample: context of achievement

The employment history section of your social media manager resume will showcase your ideas, projects, and contributions. But it also needs to put your work into context, including figures and outcomes. While your employment history may not all be relevant to the role that you are applying for, it is important to match up elements of your experience with the requirements of each specific role that you interview for. When hiring managers read about the employer's own projects and challenges, they will have a high level of certainty that you can do a job for them too.

While leading first with your most recent job experiences shows you are up to date with the latest social marketing methodologies, it's also important for an employer to see that you were implementing what worked at the time. Talking about running organic video campaigns six years ago will not fool anyone. Your resume's work history section must also demonstrate that you and your former employer were at the cutting edge, and that you work hard to stay there.

Use reverse chronological order when listing your past jobs and projects, from recent to oldest. Your resume space is limited to one page, so start with the most impressive positions and achievements. Employment history sections rarely go beyond 10 years of experience and often they will show even less. Detailing important achievements take precedence over irrelevant junior positions or jobs in other fields.

Illustrate your examples with numbers and percentages, and where possible put them into context of what went before. The typical social media impact within a given industry might not be the same for your prospective employer, so you cannot assume that they are aware.  It is also important to cover how you worked with stakeholders, influencing their decisions and encouraging their contribution. No social media manager works in a vacuum, and it is vital that a collaborative thread runs through your work history. If you don’t talk about people, you will be seen as a lone wolf.

According to data from PayScale, the average worldwide salary of a social media specialist barely increases when it passes the nine-year mark. The jump from four to five years of experience is plus $8,000 a year, while the jump from nine to 10 years is barely $2,000. So, no need to make your employment history overly comprehensive.

Be specific about your personal impact, and do not fall into the trap of simply describing your responsibilities. Conveying what your job entailed is not enough — you have to describe how you made a difference in your job. Use action verbs and avoid any superfluous adjectives or fluffy language. You have achieved too much to waste space on your resume.

To describe projects and accomplishments, the STAR method can help keep your explanations logical and straightforward:

  • S — Situation you were in
  • T — Task(s) you had
  • A — Actions/strategy you used
  • R — Result you achieved

Social Media Manager - Use the
STARR method

Below is a social media manager employment history resume sample you can use while writing your own.

  • Developed social accounts and set up content calendars for new clients.
  • Interacted with online communities and promoted brand and product awareness.
  • Assisted with management of client presence on varying social media platforms.
  • Recorded data regarding website traffic and user feedback.
  • Created infographics and images for client blogs and Facebook accounts.

Social media manager education example: learning curve

Since most social media managers possess a bachelor’s degree, this will likely appear at the top of your resume education section. In addition, your education listing should reflect the need for self-education and training as a constant for this profession. As the job sector develops, job-specific marketing qualifications are becoming increasingly common, but in an ever-changing landscape, the majority of the learning requirements are on the job.

You likely won't have enough space to include every course you have taken. However, it's important to demonstrate an attitude of self-improvement so employers can tell your skills and knowledge have not  stagnated. So do include a bulleted list of certifications or courses that are specifically tailored to each job role. Little details like this make all the difference.

Below is the education section from a social media manager resume example.

  • 2005-2009 Hofstra University, Bachelor of Marketing Hempstead, NY
  • 2001- 2005 St, Peter’s Academy, High School Diploma NY, NYO

CV skills example: ensuring alignment

It is vital to align your social media manager CV with each potential job and employer you are targeting. In each instance, make sure you showcase the skills that are required for each specific role. In social media, you are only as good as your last campaign. Every social campaign is different and the same goes for every social media management role.

Your resume should contain a good mix of hard and soft skills, with a few real-life examples where possible. There isn't enough space to highlight each skill more than once in your resume summary and employment history, so spread them out among the roles and accomplishments highlighted in order of importance and relevance.

In that context, here are some skills typically expected from social media managers:

  • Drive the online brand strategy and own the voice of your company on social media.
  • Decide where to prioritize your efforts over multiple campaigns across multiple platforms.
  • Understand where your audience is spending their time and how they behave online.
  • Leverage the right tools and software that correspond to the needs of your business.
  • Create customer-centric content and work with the best-fit service providers.
  • Communicate with clients and colleagues to ensure optimal performance of campaigns.
  • Manage, grow and engage with your community online - without them you are nothing.
  • Analyze results, adapt strategies and react to changes in the marketing landscape.
  • Monitor and report on performance – making sure that engagement leads to conversion.

Some might view social media management as a transactional and practical occupation. However, the best social media managers are able to blend their softer behavioral traits — such as influencing and creativity — with the more technical job requirements. It's easy to reel off a list of skills and behaviors, but giving relevant  real-life examples is what will make your resume really stand out.  Don’t just talk the talk – show that you can walk the walk. Include statistics such as growth numbers, campaign reach and return on investment to back up your skills and make your employer imagine what you might achieve.

According to Bowdoin Group HR, a consultancy that helps companies with recruiting and HR needs, the skills employers should look for in social media specialists are: target audience analysis, strong writing and presentation skills and data analytics skills. Social media marketing is also about evaluating the numeric results of campaigns, audience engagement, ROI for social media advertising and so on.

As a manager, you obviously also need coordination skills, team management skills and emotional intellect (to name a few).

Understanding how employers view your required skills is  important.

Otherwise, abbreviated skill descriptions — one or two words each — belong as a bullet-point list in your resume's skills section.

Check out a social media manager resume sample for the skills section below.

  • Interpersonal Communication Skills
  • Project Management Skills
  • Content Development
  • Business Development Strategies
  • Customer Service
  • Computer Technology Skills.

Resume layout and design: creative but impactful

Making decisions about how to structure your social media manager resume can be difficult for those who usually work with a creative blank canvas. There are no specific rules about which format to choose, but we can suggest some guiding principles.

Firstly, ensure that it is visually clean, easy to read and symmetrical. You will have a lot to say about your achievements, but the starring moments will be lost if your resume is cluttered.

Secondly, don’t make it too densely technical. A recruiter without a deep understanding might skip over to more readable parts. Including technical terms is good for the ATS, but make sure that they are integrated into your career story.

To increase your chances of passing the ATS test, decipher the most important abbreviations. Not all ATS algorithms can recognize every acronym. Don’t reduce your chances by listing only three-letter abbreviations throughout your entire resume.

Make sure that all of your resume can be “read” both by humans and machines. For example, not all ATS systems will pick up on what's in a header section, which is why contact information is often lost in processing. Ensure that your resume has a logical flow.

So, what layout is best for a social media manager? The visual clues of your resume layout will offer an insight into your ability to grab the audience's attention, so a sectioned structure and visual effects such as bulleted sections and progress bars will work well. Our template collection has a wide range of attractive layouts. Choose one and make it your own using our builder tool .

Key takeaways for a social media manager resume

  • Your employer will be borrowing your voice, so make sure that your language is compelling.
  • Summarize your elevator pitch with emotive language and impactful examples.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the employer’s brand by sharing your relevant job history.
  • Communicate your mix of hard and soft skills with specific achievements in context.
  • Share what, how, where, when, and why certain actions have led to the desired result.
  • Ensure that the layout of your resume is a blend of practicality and creativity.
  • If your resume isn’t inspiring, how will you inspire your audience on social media?

Social Media Manager Resume Overview: What To Know To Write A Resume That Wins More Job Offers

What do companies look for when they're hiring a Social Media Manager?

Companies love candidates who can create engaging content tailored to their target audience, using analytics to drive insights, build strategies, and measure success. Companies also value candidates who can manage multiple platforms effectively and are proficient with social media tools like Hootsuite, Buffer, Sprout Social, and others.

Additionally, when hiring a Social Media Manager, skills in trend analysis, brand consistency, and effective communication are also valued for aligning social media efforts with overall marketing goals.

Your resume should show the company that your personality and your experience encompass all these things.

Additionally, there are a few best practices you want to follow to write a job-winning Social Media Manager resume:

  • Tailor your resume to the job description you are applying for: Tailor your resume for each application, aligning your skills with the specific requirements of each job description.
  • Detail previous experiences: Provide detailed descriptions of your roles, emphasizing hard and soft skills related to the job description.
  • Bring in your key achievements: Showcase measurable achievements in previous roles and share your best work.
  • Highlight your skills: Highlight your skills in Communication, Content, Marketing, and more.
  • Make it visually appealing: Use a professional and clean layout with bullet points for easy readability. Also, ensure formatting and font consistency throughout the resume and limit it to one or two pages.
  • Use keywords: Incorporate industry-specific keywords from the job description to pass through applicant tracking systems (ATS) and increase your chances of being noticed by hiring managers.
  • Proofread your resume: Thoroughly proofread your resume to eliminate errors (I recommend Hemingway App and Grammarly ). Consider seeking feedback from peers or mentors to ensure clarity and effectiveness!

Let's dive deeper into each of these so you have the exact blueprint you need to see success.

The Best Social Media Manager Skills To Include On Your Resume

Keywords are one of the most important factors in your resume. They show employers that your skills align with the role and they also help format your resume for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

If you're not familiar with ATS systems, they are pieces of software used by employers to manage job applications. They scan resumes for keywords and qualifications and make it easier for employers to filter and search for candidates whose qualifications match the role.

If you want to win more interviews and job offers, you need to have a keyword-optimized resume. There are two ways to find the right keywords:

1. Leverage The 20 Best Social Media Manager Keywords

The first is to leverage our list of the best keywords and skills for a Social Media Manager resume.

These keywords were selected from an analysis of real Social Media Manager job descriptions sourced from actual job boards. Here they are:

  • Social Media
  • Communication
  • Influencers
  • Best Practices
  • Writing Skills
  • Manage Multiple Projects
  • Detail-Oriented

2. Use ResyMatch.io To Find The Best Keywords That Are Specific To Your Resume And Target Role

The second method is the one I recommend because it's personalized to your specific resume and target job.

This process lets you find the exact keywords that your resume is missing when compared to the individual role you're applying for.

Social Media Manager Hard Skills

Here's how it works:

  • Open a copy of your updated Social Media Manager resume

ResyMatch is going to scan your resume and compare it to the target job description. It's going to show you the exact keywords and skills you're missing as well as share other feedback you can use to improve your resume.

And if you're a visual learner, here's a video walking through the entire process so you can follow along:

Employers spend an average of six seconds reading your resume.

If you want to win more interviews and offers, you need to make that time count. That starts with hitting the reader with the exact information they're looking for right at the top of your resume.

Unfortunately, traditional resume advice like Summaries and Objectives don't accomplish that goal. If you want to win in today's market, you need a modern approach. I like to use something I can a “Highlight Reel,” here's how it works.

Highlight Reels: A Proven Way To Start Your Resume And Win More Jobs

The Highlight Reel is exactly what it sounds like.

It's a section at the top of your resume that allows you to pick and choose the best and most relevant experience to feature right at the top of your resume.

It's essentially a highlight reel of your career as it relates to this specific role! I like to think about it as the SportsCenter Top 10 of your resume.

The Highlight Reel resume summary consists of 4 parts:

  • A relevant section title that ties your experience to the role
  • An introductory bullet that summarizes your experience and high-level value
  • A few supporting “Case Study” bullets that illustrate specific results, projects, and relevant experience
  • A closing “Extracurricular” bullet to round out your candidacy

For example, if we were writing a Highlight Reel for a Social Media Manager role, it might look like this:

Social Media Manager Resume Bullet #1

The first bullet includes the candidate's years of experience in the role and encompasses the skills that make them fit for the role, as well as the results they helped achieve.

The next two bullets are “Case Studies” of specific results they drove for companies they worked for. The last bullet wraps up with extracurricular information.

This candidate has provided all of the info any employer would want to see right at the very top of their resume! The best part is that they can customize this section for each and every role they apply for to maximize the relevance of their experience.

Here's one more example of a Social Media Manager Highlight Reel:

Social Media Manager Resume Bullet #2

The content of this example showcases a candidate transitioning from an Office Manager Manager role to a Social Media Manager role, leveraging their experience with communication. Their next resume bullets brings in measurable results, and the last one wraps up with a high-value extracurricular activity.

If you want more details on writing a killer Highlight Reel, check out my full guide on Highlight Reels here.

Bullets make up the majority of the content in your resume. If you want to win, you need to know how to write bullets that are compelling and value-driven.

Unfortunately, way too many job seekers aren't good at this. They use fluffy, buzzword-fill language and they only talk about the actions that they took rather than the results and outcomes those actions created.

The Anatomy Of A Highly Effective Resume Bullet

If you apply this framework to each of the bullets on your resume, you're going to make them more compelling and your value is going to be crystal clear to the reader. For example, take a look at these resume bullets:

❌ Social Media Manager with 7+ years of experience in marketing.

✅ Innovative Social Media Manager with 7+ years in branding & digital marketing, driving 50% increase in engagement.

The second bullet makes the candidate's value  so much more clear, and it's a lot more fun to read! That's what we're going for here.

That said, it's one thing to look at the graphic above and try to apply the abstract concept of “35% hard skills” to your bullet. We wanted to make things easy, so we created a tool called ResyBullet.io that will actually give your resume bullet a score and show you how to improve it.

Using ResyBullet To Write Crazy Effective, Job-Winning Resume Bullets

ResyBullet takes our proprietary “resume bullet formula” and layers it into a tool that's super simple to use. Here's how it works:

  • Head over to ResyBullet.io
  • Copy a bullet from your resume and paste it into the tool, then hit “Analyze”
  • ResyBullet will score your resume bullet and show you exactly what you need to improve
  • You edit your bullet with the recommended changes and scan it again
  • Rinse and repeat until you get a score of 60+
  • Move on to the next bullet in your resume

Let's take a look at how this works for the two resume bullet examples I shared above:

First, we had, “Social Media Manager with 7+ years of experience in marketing.”

ResyBullet gave that a score of 46/100. Not only is it too short, but it's missing relevant skills, compelling language, and measurable outcomes:

Example Of A Bad Social Media Resume Bullet

Now, let's take a look at our second bullet,  “Innovative Social Media Manager with 7+ years in branding & digital marketing, driving 50% increase in engagement.”

ResyBullet gave that a 75 / 100. Much better! This bullet had more content focused on the experience in the Social Media Manager role, while also highlighting measurable results:

Example Of A Good Social Media Resume Bullet

Now all you have to do is run each of your bullets through ResyBullet, make the suggested updates, and your resume is going to be jam-packed with eye-popping, value-driven content!

If you're ready, grab a bullet from your resume, paste it into the widget below, and hit scan to get your first resume bullet score and analysis:

Design of Social Media Manager Resume

As a Social Media Manager, it is essential to have a visually appealing and well-structured resume. Your resume design plays a vital role in creating a lasting impression on the recruiter.

Role of design in Resumes

Design plays a crucial role in resumes as it is the first impression that your potential employer will have of you. A well-designed resume can elevate your job application and make it stand out from the rest. Your resume design should be aesthetically pleasing, easy to read and follow, and maintain a strong sense of branding.

When designing a social media manager resume, it is important to keep in mind that the design should reflect the creativity and innovation required in this field. Here are some best design practices for social media manager resumes:

1. Maintain Consistent Branding

Your resume design should be consistent with your personal brand and the companies you have worked for. Use similar branding elements like color schemes, logos, fonts, and visuals to maintain consistency.

3. Use Relevant Visuals

Using visuals in your resume design can make it more engaging and memorable. However, it is important to use only relevant visuals like icons, logos, and infographics. Avoid using irrelevant images or graphics that might distract the recruiter.

4. Show Creativity

Social media managers are expected to be creative, and your resume design should showcase your creativity. Explore unique design ideas like using color gradients, custom typography, or incorporating social media platform themes into the design.

How to use colors, fonts, and graphics effectively

Effective use of colors, fonts, and graphics can enhance your resume design and make it more visually appealing. Here are some tips for using these design elements effectively in your social media manager resume:

Use colors that align with your personal brand and the companies you have worked for. Avoid using too many colors, and ensure that they complement each other. Don’t use colors that could be seen as unprofessional.

Choose easy-to-read fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Helvetica for the body text. Use bolder and larger fonts for headings and subheadings. Avoid using too many fonts in one document.

Make sure that the graphics are relevant to your experience and the job requirements. Use icons, logos, or infographics that explain your experience and skill set in a concise and visually appealing manner.

Designing a Social Media Manager resume requires a balance of creativity and professionalism. Focus on maintaining consistent branding, using relevance in your design choices, and keeping your designs simple and readable. How to Write an Effective Social Media Manager Resume

A great social media manager resume can be the difference between landing your dream job or getting ignored. There are a few things to keep in mind when writing a resume: customization, a catchy summary statement, listing relevant experience and skills, and adding quantifiable achievements.

Importance of Customizing for Each Job Application

Customizing your resume for each job application is crucial as it allows you to highlight the most relevant information in relation to the job requirements. Doing so shows that you have done your research and are genuinely interested in the position.

To customize your resume, review the job description and tailor your resume to align with the required skills and qualifications. This can include placing relevant experience and skills higher up in your resume and removing those that are not required.

Writing a Catchy Summary Statement

Your summary statement is your opportunity to present yourself to the hiring manager in a concise and compelling way. A good summary statement accurately describes your skills and experience while showcasing your personal brand.

A great summary statement should include your current position or relevant experience, skills, and a brief overview of your personal brand. This is an opportunity to show your creative flair and highlight your unique qualities as a social media manager.

Listing the Relevant Experience and Skills

Social media is a constantly changing landscape, and experience in the field is essential. When listing your experience, focus on the duties and responsibilities that relate directly to the job requirements.

Skills are also important in a social media manager resume. Highlight the skills you have acquired through your experience such as social media campaign creation, data analysis, and content creation.

Adding Quantifiable Achievements

Adding quantifiable achievements to your resume can help you stand out from other applicants. It shows your impact and success in previous roles and indicates your potential for future success.

Quantifiable achievements may include increasing social media followers, improving engagement rates, and increasing website traffic. Use specific details to highlight the impact you’ve had in the past and the success you can bring to the new role.

A great social media manager resume must be customized for each job, include a catchy summary statement, list relevant experience and skills, and add quantifiable achievements. Follow these tips, and you’ll be on your way to securing your dream job.

Industry-specific tips for Social Media Manager Resume Writing

When writing your Social Media Manager resume, it’s important to use industry-specific language and showcase your knowledge of social media platforms, trends, and analytics. Use keywords related to your field, such as social media management, content strategy, community engagement, and social media advertising.

Editing and Proofreading your Resume

How to avoid common mistakes while writing a Social Media Manager Resume

There are a few common mistakes that Social Media Managers make when writing their resumes. Here’s how to avoid them:

Don’t list your job responsibilities without emphasizing your achievements. Employers want to see what you have accomplished in your previous roles, not just what you were supposed to do.

Don’t use generic language or clichĂŠs. Be specific and use action verbs to describe your experiences and accomplishments.

Don’t forget to tailor your resume to the job you’re applying for. Highlight the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the position.

Don’t include irrelevant or outdated experiences. Keep your resume focused on your Social Media Manager skills and experiences.

By following these tips and avoiding common mistakes, you can write a winning Social Media Manager resume that showcases your expertise and impresses potential employers. Remember to stay focused on your accomplishments, use strong language, and tailor your resume to the job you’re applying for.

Your resume skills and work experience

Your skills are some of the most essential building blocks of your resume, especially at an entry level. Since they’re such key elements in painting a picture of your qualifications, you’ll need to make sure they’re relevant and specific.

Don’t use generic skills like “communication” that could apply to any job role. Instead, look deeper and consider what you use your communication abilities for and which tools you use to do it.

What programs do you use to reach your audience? What technical tools do you use to analyze data and share your findings with others?

The best thing you can do to bolster your experience points (whether you pull them from previous jobs, internships, or school projects) is to quantify them. Use metric data to highlight the impact you’ve had.

5 Social Media Manager Resume Writing Tips

Now that you have a clearer idea of what your social media manager resume should look like, you can start building your own document . If you still need a little more inspiration, take a look at the following five suggestions to increase your chances of getting a callback.

Tip # 1: Avoid keyword stuffing on your social media manager resume

As a social media manager, you probably already know keyword stuffing in your content never leads to anything good. Why would it be any different in your resume? We know it’s easy to get carried away when adding skills to each and every single one of your resume’s sections. You might feel that the more you add, the higher your chances of bypassing the ATS.

Contrary to popular belief, keyword stuffing could be counterproductive. It might raise some red flags and make your resume look a lot less authentic. To avoid this, you should always be true to yourself and add only the social media manager skills you know you have. Prioritize the ones that appear in the job description, as they’re the ones your future employer already indexed on the ATS.

Tip # 2: Showcase your communication skills by using the right words

Words can make or break a brilliant resume. Using generic and lackluster terms to describe your skills and experience won’t make a lasting impression on your potential employer. Using action words will turn your document into a magnet for recruiters and hiring managers.

Instead of using generic terms like:

  • Participated

Make sure to spice things up with more specific terms like:

  • Transformed

Tip # 3: Keep it short

You might think that a long, extremely detailed resume will impress your potential employer with your extensive experience. That’s not necessarily true. The average recruiter takes six to seven seconds on each document they receive. That’s why you need to be more practical and keep things concise and digestible.

  • Avoid writing tedious text blocks that are hard to scan through.
  • Use bullets to describe your responsibilities in previous jobs.
  • Don’t include any project over ten years old unless it’s highly relevant to the position.

Tip # 4: Show your attention to detail with flawless grammar

As a social media manager, you’ll often be in charge of written communication that reaches hundreds — if not thousands — of people. Having impeccable grammar is part of your job. Recruiters might not think you’re cut out for the part if your resume is covered in typos and poor syntax.

Take a few minutes before you submit your application to double-check for spelling mistakes . Invest in a good spellcheck app, or ask someone you trust to help you ensure that you haven’t missed anything.

Tip # 5: Reinforce your experience using numbers

Most candidates don’t think of numbers as an essential part of showcasing their abilities. However, saying you’re good at something is rarely ever enough. Recruiters will be a lot more impressed by tangible proof of your skills than mere allegations.

Add figures and percentages to make your entries more enticing. Still, make sure not to inflate the numbers, as it may play against you in the short run. You don’t want your future employer to think of you as dishonest from day one.
