What are three therapeutic communication techniques the nurse could use when interacting with Mrs. Fisher?

Active listening - Active listening involves showing interest in what patients have to say, acknowledging that you're listening and understanding, and engaging with them throughout the conversation. Nurses can offer general leads such as “What happened next?” to guide the conversation or propel it forward.

Silence - Deliberate silence can give both nurses and patients an opportunity to think through and process what comes next in the conversation. It may give patients the time and space they need to broach a new topic. Nurses should always let patients break the silence.

Open ended questions - allows more space for the patient to verbalize feelings with personal details. Close-ended questions (yes/no answers) restrict nurse-patient communication, especially among patients with depression.

Take notes here to describe the strengths and weaknesses of your own submission based on your review of the expert answer.

My response was strong; however, I could have provided more details regarding the therapeutic communication techniques. For example:

S.O.L.E. for active listening: Sit, Observe, Lean towards patient, Eye contact, Relaxed demeanor.

Silence is helpful when the patient is confronted or overwhelmed with various decisions.

Open-ended questions allow the patient to take control of the conversation in a healthy manner.
