English and Creative Writing

Use your creative writing skills and love of the English language to tell stories in a range of different contexts and styles.

What type of student are you?

You're considered a domestic student if you're an Australian citizen or permanent resident , a New Zealand citizen or hold a permanent Australian humanitarian visa.

You're an international student if you hold or are applying for a Student, Diplomatic, Bridging, Temporary or Provisional Resident visa, or are a permanent resident of New Zealand.

The English and Creative Writing major rests on the idea of the importance of literature as a living cultural practice.

You will focus on the global significance of text as a literary form, broadly understood to include all its variants - from the short story, to the sonnet, from the blog to the bildungsroman, and from pastoral to performance poetry.

Understanding the intimate relationship between the literary and the creative, you’ll get to study English literature while developing knowledge and skill in critical and creative reflection and writing practice. School Outreach

The Young Authors Collective, or YAC, is a group of talented, word-obsessed high school writers dedicated to experimenting with new creative forms, collaborating with other arts organizations, and writing a ton. We meet once a week at Lighthouse to generate new pieces, give friendly feedback, and work towards publication.

Support Young Writers

Our Future Scribes Depend on Your Support. Nearly all of the workshops and projects that will engage 2,300 students this year are free to attend, and for the sessions that do have tuition, such as summer writing camp, financial aid is available for any student who needs it. We want all young people who want to write to be able to do so and for them to be nurtured by the best instructors and mentors available. This only happens with the support of generous donors like you.

Every donation directly supports writers, translators, and communities to experience the art and joy of creating with words.

Live evening courses.

Establish a writing routine, build skills and receive constructive feedback with a live evening course from the National Centre for Writing

Designed to grow your practice, we offer live writing classes to suit a range of writing abilities. Each will see you join a small group of like-minded writers over a set period, led by a skilled tutor, during which you’ll work on your craft and confidence.

Relaxed and engaging, the classes are carefully structured to take you through a series of tutor presentations, practical exercises and group discussion as well as developing new or existing work.

We offer beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of learning throughout the year. Some of our live evening courses take place in person at Dragon Hall in Norwich, while others take place online . Our online classes still take place in real-time online so you can enjoy the feeling of being in a classroom with fellow participants and your tutor from the comfort of your own home – anywhere in the world!

You will have the opportunity to receive feedback on your work – either informally in class, and/or through one workshop session. To ensure that everyone gets a chance to input, we have capped courses to a maximum of 15 people.

See below for upcoming courses.
