The best workout apps are a great way to train at home or the gym, with access to motivational, qualified personal trainers in just a few taps. There are free options and paid apps, but it's hard to know which will suit your training needs.

That's why we put these fitness apps to the test, joining strength training sessions, yoga classes, and high-intensity routines over several weeks. If you're looking for a top all-rounder, we recommend downloading Centr , the app developed by actor Chris Hemsworth.

Or, if you're looking to keep costs down, Nike Training Club is completely free, while Fiit offers access to all group classes without charge. But if these aren't quite right for you, we've rounded up the best workout apps for a range of training styles and budgets to get you started.

Centr app logo

Centr, the workout app designed by actor Chris Hemsworth, combines accessible beginner-friendly strength workouts, advanced training, yoga classes, and meditations for a comprehensive companion for training your body and mind.

Apple Fitness

Apple's virtual workout platform is an ideal option for iPhone users and Apple Watch wearers, with real-time stats displayed on the app for you to track your progress. Plus, there are meditations, yoga sessions, and walking workouts too.

Sweat

Sweat, founded by personal trainer Kayla Itsines, has plenty of structured programs based on your goals and lifestyle, offering workouts and nutrition plans to help you get the most from your training.

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Centr is the best workout app for most people thanks to its impressive library of strength training, HIIT, and cardio sessions. But if you're worried that an app designed by Chris Hemsworth, known for his muscular stature in the Marvel superhero films, would be all about bulking up, that's not the case.

Although there are plenty of sessions that can help you build substantial muscle, we were impressed at the variety available through Centr. There are beginner-friendly workouts, high-intensity cardio sessions, and gym-based weights sessions, but the primary focus is on helping you hit your goals, whatever they are.

So, if you want to add more exercise into your routine, and develop a mindfulness habit, the app can help with that. There are meditations, some led by Hemsworth himself, designed to connect you mind and body, and that can improve your focus and form during the strength training sessions to get the most from your workouts.

We also really liked that you can head into the app's settings to select the equipment you have to hand, then use that list to filter the library, so you only see classes or routines you can do with the weights you have. This saves a lot of time, allowing you more space to do your workout rather than fiddle with the app.

And if you want to use Centr as a holistic base for all your health and fitness needs, there's a meal planner too, and we found that it was really easy to customize the meals, adjust quantities, and add them automatically to an in-app shopping list for when you go to the grocery store.

Although we rate it as the best workout app for most people, it is primarily focused on strength training, with some cardio and yoga on the side. If you want more mobility or yoga workouts, you might be better off with an app like Fiit, which offers access to all group classes for free.

Best free workout app

Screenshots of the Nike Training workout app

2. Nike Training Club

In March 2020, Nike made its Nike Training Club app content completely free for 90 days to help people keep fit while they stayed at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the app has been completely free for users, and unlike others on this list, there’s no paid version anymore.

However, with the update, Nike removed some of their training programs, which used to be a popular feature of the app. Instead, you now have the option to filter workouts by muscle group — abs and core, arms and shoulders, or glutes and legs, workout focus — endurance, mobility, strength, and yoga, and by equipment. There is also the option to filter by duration, level, and intensity.

During testing, we found the instructor-led workouts to be engaging and motivating, and also enjoyed the whiteboard workouts, which show you the entire workout so you can follow at your own pace. There’s also the option to connect the workout to your Apple Music. It’s not perfect, but for a free app, there’s plenty to keep you moving here.

Best workout app for beginners

A screenshot of the FIIT workout app

Whether you enjoy weightlifting, yoga or cardio, the Fiit app has you covered. We've tested Fiit with and without equipment or chest strap monitors, and every class we've sweated through gets a huge tick from us.

Intuitive in-app features, clear metric monitoring and world class instructors are just some of the perks of being a Fiit member. From strength training to treadmill-only workouts and spin, you can build strength and improve cardio from the comfort of your own home. Then you get to cool down and go again without swapping apps.

There's  free and paid options, but you get plenty of value if you do decide to pay, and you can access a free trial if you're unconvinced. Functional fitness, HIIT, yoga or breathwork. It's all there, and we're big fans.

Best workout app for iPhone

A screenshot from the Apple Fitness Plus workout app

4. Apple Fitness Plus

Apple Fitness Plus is the best workout app if you're embedded in the company's ecosystem, especially if you use an Apple Watch . There are HIIT, strength, core, yoga, Pilates, and meditation classes, taught by a range of different trainers.

During testing, we also liked the fact there were two instructors in the background during classes, showing modifications for beginners, or those looking to push themselves harder — this is particularly handy as there’s no option to filter classes by difficulty.

The app can feel a little overwhelming at a first glance, but classes can be filtered by trainer, time, and the music you prefer to work out to. You can also add classes to your library, which lets you select classes you’ve taken before, or plan on taking in the future, at a glance.

During a workout, if you're wearing one of the best Apple Watches , you’ll be able to see stats from your watch on the screen. When it first launched, you had to have a Watch to use Fitness Plus, but Apple removed the restriction in 2022.

Best workout app for women

a screenshot from Sweat workout app

The brainchild of Australian personal trainer Kayla Itsines, the Sweat app started as a series of downloadable Bikini Body Guides in 2015 and has now grown into an extensive training app with several different programs and recipes to help you reach your goals.

There's a structured program for everyone — from the new mom taking her first steps into post-baby fitness, to the girl looking to gain more confidence in the weights room at the gym.

Trainers include Kayla herself, as well as the likes of Kelsey Wells, Chontel Duncan, Britany Williams, and Stephanie Sanzo. You can switch your program easily and take on-demand classes if you feel like adding the odd barre session to your planner.

During testing, we loved the range of workouts but found it a little irritating having to bend down and manually skip between exercises, although it wasn’t enough to put us off using the app regularly.

We’d also say this app is definitely aimed at women, but there’s no reason why guys couldn’t follow the training plans. We just love the emphasis on female-led programs!

Best workout app for meal plans

Screenshots from the EvolveYou workout app

6. EvolveYou

If you're someone who likes to mix up your workouts, alternating between cardio or weights, Pilates or HIIT, the gym, or workouts in your living room, EvolveYou is a workout app worth considering.

Designed for women by personal trainer Krissy Cela, the app has six different trainers on board, all of whom have a number of different workout plans to choose from.

During testing, we found the app was easy to navigate around, although we did find it a little glitchy now and again. The workouts were simple and extremely easy to follow, making the app well suited to complete newbies, and more experienced gym-goers alike.

There's also the option to play your own music or listen to a podcast while working out, as you don't have to follow along with a video, which we appreciated. There's a 14-day free trial if you want to give the app a whirl before signing up for a membership.

Best workout app for runners

A screenshot of the running stats on the free version of the Strava app

Strava is one of the best running apps on the market, with a free and a paid subscription to allow runners, cyclists, and walkers to keep track of their progress. That said, despite its reputation as an app for runners and cyclists, you can track a total of 31 different sports.

The list includes hiking, canoeing, an E-Bike ride, rowing, alpine skiing, swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, and yoga. Of course, it’s important to point out that there are no actual workouts on Strava, so unlike other apps on this list, don’t expect to follow a strength training session — this is an app for tracking your progress.

While the free version of the app is brilliant, the paid version gives you the option to use the Routes tool, which gives you suggestions based on where other runners in your area have clocked their miles, as well as segments, advanced performance metrics, and training plans.

Strava supports a variety of running trackers in addition to Wear OS devices and Apple Watch. (Just make sure you opt out of the location tracking features if you happen to be around restricted areas.

There are also handy features like Strava Beacon , which are designed to keep you safe, by allowing your friends or family members to track your live location on a run.

Best workout app for the gym

screenshots from the HWPO app

8. HWPO Training

Whether you're a CrossFit fanatic, or you're taking your first tentative steps into the world of weight lifting, you'll find something for you on the HWPO training app.

Designed by Mat Fraser, the only CrossFit Athlete in to win five consecutive CrossFit Games, the workouts are clearly written out and easy to follow, with instructional videos to help you master the perfect form.

We tested the HWPO Sweat program for a month and we were impressed with how quickly we gained strength following the app's routines. HWPO stands for "Hard Work Pays Off" and it really does — we quickly gained confidence and strength in the gym following the plan.

And although mostly targeted at gym-goers, you can do some low-equipment sessions at home if you have the right weights. The main downside, though, is the high monthly cost. Then again, you do get to follow sessions designed by one of the fittest men on earth. Want a taster? Here's a workout Fraser wrote for Tom's Guide .

How to choose the best workout app

The best workout app for you covers the exercises you're interested in doing at a level that's accessible to you. Ideally, a good fitness app will support multiple levels of expertise so that as you get fitter and more comfortable, you can push yourself to the next level.

While a handful of apps are free, many of these workout apps require a subscription. Take advantage of any trial period and then try a monthly subscription to see if the app meets your needs. If you like what you see, you can always switch to an annual subscription, which usually lowers your monthly cost.

If you're someone who likes to mix up your workout routines regularly, it might be a good idea to look for a well-rounded workout app that has a good mix of workouts to suit your mood and prevent you from regretting your monthly subscription.

Several of the options on our best workout apps list will log your exercise data. If you're an iPhone user, pay special attention to any apps that integrate with the built-in Health app on your phone.

How we test the best workout apps

To help you make the best decision when choosing a workout app, we put them to the sweat test by using them for a number of different workouts. For each of the apps, we tried multiple workouts and looked at how easy the workouts were to follow, the range of workouts on offer, and how often new workouts were added to the app.

We also looked at the little extras that make using the app more enjoyable — for example, the option to sync the app with third-party music platforms to allow you to listen to your own playlists as you work out, or the option to download workouts to do without phone reception or wifi.

Finally, we'll look at the cost of the workout app to download or subscribe to, and what you get for your money.

Do workout apps really work?

Training at home using an app can be a great way to hit your fitness goals, but it's important to find the best workout app for your specific needs and the way you like to exercise.

If you enjoy the sessions and programs, you'll find it easier to make them part of your routine and progress towards your targets. For instance, if you like intense, high-energy classes, then the Peloton app might suit you.

However, for strength workouts, Centr is an excellent option, especially as you can filter classes by the equipment you have at hand. It's also important that the workouts themselves are effective.

That's why we put each app to the test before including it in our guide. We've tried these apps ourselves to see if they're easy to use, fun, and worth the money you need to pay in subscription fees.

The best home workout apps 2021

Stay strong and flexible if you can't get to the gym

The best home workout apps

Home workout apps are a great way to get moving when you're unable to get to a gym. It can be tricky to know which ones are worth your time, though. The App Store and Google Play Store are both packed with apps that promise to help you improve your flexibility and fitness at home, but only the best are made by qualified professionals with a real understanding of what makes a workout safe and effective.

The best home workout apps provide clear instructions in video or audio form (or both), and provide encouragement from real coaches as you progress. They also provide a wide range of different workout ideas so you never get bored, and let you create custom plans and monitor your progress.

Some workouts will require some basic kit like a yoga mat, dumbbells and resistance bands , whereas others need nothing extra at all.

Here we're looking at apps that offer workouts you can perform indoors at home, though many also offer ideas, guidance and support for exercising outdoors or at the gym. We've also included a mix of free and paid-for options so there's something for every budget.

Reasons to buy.

Peloton is best known for its spin and sessions, led live by professional coaches, and these are all present and correct in the app. There's also a lot more on offer though, including plenty of workouts you follow with minimal equipment or none at all.

Classes are split into activity types, including strength, yoga, cardio and meditation to name just a few. All are professionally filmed in a studio, with enthusiastic coaches offering plenty of advice and encouragement along the way.

Live sessions are visible with a quick tap of the 'Schedule' icon, and last between 10 and 60 minutes each (most are half an hour). Repeats of recorded sessions are marked 'Encore'. To sign up for one, just tap the checkbox on the right.

Unlike most home workout apps, Peloton also includes outdoor workouts that you can follow. These are audio-only, so you can put in your earbuds, tuck your phone into an armband or pocket, and get going. There's a great range of activities too, including everything from intense HIIT sessions to power-walking.

Peloton is also currently running a workout-based challenge called Pelothon, which will support hunger relief efforts around the world. Peloton's 33 instructors are split into six teams, who will lead sessions on different days. Pick one to join, hit your weekly goals, support one another and track the progress of your whole team, and Peloton will donate to one of its non-profit partners each week. Find out more on Peloton's website .

If you own a Peloton bike then the app subscription is included. If you don't, you can sign up for a digital subscription for $12.99 / £12.99 (about AU$) per month, which is a surprisingly competitive price considering how much is included, and how often new content is added. Not sure? There's a 30-day free trial available so you can take it for a spin first.

Aaptiv

Reasons to avoid

While most home workout apps use videos to demonstrate what you should be doing, Aaptiv talks you through every activity, which means you don't have to prop up your phone or tablet and peer at your screen mid-stretch. It features licensed music too, so you don't have to worry about setting up a playlist in a different app.

The first time you log in, you'll be prompted to set a goal (such as running faster, losing weight or just keeping fit) and provide a little information about your current fitness level and exercise habits. You'll also be asked what equipment you have access to, so you'll only be recommended workouts you can do with what you already have.

Workouts are split into categories such a strength training and stretching, and each one comes with an estimated duration and difficulty level, plus star ratings from other users to help you make your choice.

All trainers featured in the app are relentlessly cheerful and encouraging as they encourage you to push yourself, which can really help when you're working out alone away from the buzz of a real gym.

All this comes for a monthly fee of $15/£13 (about AU$26), with a discount available if you pay for a whole year up-front. That's quite a financial commitment, but there's a lot on offer here, including over 3,000 classes to ensure you never get bored, plus group challenges to keep you motivated.

Interested, but want to try it first? Each subscription begins with a free trial period, and you won't be charged if you cancel before it's over.

Fitbit Coach

3. Fitbit Coach

Workouts in Fitbit Coach are led by professional, enthusiastic instructors (you choose yours before beginning the fitness test), who guide you through each movement with clear video instructions. Not sure how to perform a particular exercise? Just tap it, and you'll be shown exactly how to do it safely (an invaluable feature when you're working out alone).

The first time you launch the app, you'll be prompted to sign up for a Fitbit account (or log in with your existing one), then run through an eight-minute fitness test. After that, you'll be able to get stuck in properly, and take your pick from a range of programs designed with different goals in mind.

You can sign up for Fitbit Coach Premium, which offers more workouts, personalized plans based on your progress and goals, audio coaching for running and walking, a wider pool of trainers to choose from, and several music stations. It costs $9.99/£7.99 (about AU$15) per month, or $79.99/£79.99 (about AU$122) if you pay annually.

You don't need a Fitbit device to use Fitbit Coach, although if you do own one, connecting it is a piece of cake. The app can also link to Facebook and Google Fit, allowing you to share your efforts with friends; another great motivation to get up off the couch and moving.

Asana Rebel

4. Asana Rebel

Asana Rebel is primarily a yoga app, though it's also packed with tools to help you develop better sleep hygiene and other lifestyle habits.

As with most home workout apps, you'll need to start by registering for an account and entering a few details about yourself (including height, weight and age). There's an assumption that you're aiming to lose weight - it prompts you to enter a goal - but you can always just make this the same as your current weight.

While you can download the app and browse through its scores of yoga practices free, accessing them all requires a premium subscription. This will also unlock meditation sessions, regular reminders, and guided meditations to help you sleep better. Membership costs £9.89 per month, or £47.88 for a full year if paid up-front, making it one of the most affordable home workout apps around.

Workouts are broken down into categories, such as core work and relieving tension, with detailed descriptions to help you pick one that suits your current mood. It's very much about picking something that meets your needs right now, though you can add any practices you particularly enjoy to your favorites for quick access later.

Videos are beautifully shot, and while many yoga classes and apps seem to be aimed primarily at women, Asana Rebel's developers have made sure to include plenty of guides from male instructors as well, plus options for all abilities.

Adidas Training and Running by Runtastic

5. Adidas Training and Running by Runtastic

Adidas Training and Running by Runtastic has one major advantage over most home workout apps: if offers a decent range of free features. As you might expect, the Adidas brand is heavily promoted throughout, but this isn’t just a marketing tool – it’s a seriously good app when you peel back the three stripes.

There are plenty of ready-made workouts to choose from, and if you can’t see anything that appeals, you can create a custom one by selecting body parts and setting a duration – a thoughtful feature that could save you a lot of scrolling.

You’re led through workouts by videos and audio narration. There’s little in the way of motivational speaking here; you’re simply told what to do, and for how long. It’ll help to have your phone at eye level the first time you try a new exercise so you can check your form against the video provided, but once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll be able to get by with the voice instructions alone.

Paid subscriptions are available for $9.99/£7.99 a month (about AU$15) or $49.99/£39.99 (about AU$75) for one year if paid up-front if you want to unlock premium training plans, but for basic fitness, the free app has a lot to offer.

Nike Training Club

6. Nike Training Club

Like Adidas Training and Running, Nike Training Club offers an impressive archive of free content in exchange for burning the sportswear brand into your consciousness – and it’s another impressive app below the branding. There’s no paid-for tier, either; everything is completely free.

Registration is straightforward, and after entering just a few details about yourself and your current activity levels, you’ll be presented with a helpful set of workouts (complete with timings) that might suit your needs. Can’t see what you want? You can also browse for options by muscle group or workout type (endurance, strength, mobility or yoga). It’s also possible to limit your scope to short workouts, or ones that can be carried out without any extra equipment. There are over 190 available at the time of writing, with more added regularly.

The videos in this home workout app are well made (though not quite as polished as some premium offerings) and offer lots of customization options. Like working out to music? There’s a switch to toggle it on. Want to turn off the audio guidance and just be told the drill timings? That’s possible too. You can even switch off audio entirely and just use the visuals.

Many of the apps here can cast video to your TV, but Nike Training Club is the easiest to use, letting you send workouts to a big screen with a couple of taps.

The only real downside is that each workouts has to be downloaded before you can start (they're not all included when you install it) so you'll need an active internet connection, but this does mean the initial install size is smaller.

Zwift app

Zwift's home workout app covers both running and cycling, so unlike most apps here, it requires a little hardware to get started. For running, you'll need the tiny Zwift RunPod (a cadence sensor that attaches to your running shoe) plus a suitable treadmill . Just about any treadmill will work provided you have the RunPod, though there's an increasing number of smart treadmills that will connect with Zwift directly (check out the full list).

For cycling, you'll need a bike and a trainer. If you have a cadence sensor, heart rate monitor or power meter, so much the better. Check out Zwift's full guidance .

Whichever type of workout you choose, you'll be able to explore a variety of virtual courses, running or riding alongside other app users from around the world. You can give them a friendly boost as you pass, join group rides, earn badges (and extra virtual kit) and generally bring indoor training to life.

There's an opportunity to run for a good cause, too. Zwift is currently hosting a mission in partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital , where you can sign up to help meet a community running goal of 18,000 miles and unlock a donation of $25,000 to help the 18,000 sick children who visit the hospital every month.

nike training club app

  • Offers a wide range of workouts from strength training to yoga.
  • Enjoy a more interactive experience with expert guidance.
  • Choose from workouts that fit your schedule and fitness level.

Most of the home workout apps I’ve used and tested follow a similar approach. They offer a wide variety of workout options, animated guides, and voice instructions. After completing the exercises, you get results showing how many calories you burned, and that’s it. Using them sometimes feels isolating. Don’t get me wrong; these apps are great for most people who want a structured workout routine.

However, the main problem is that using them feels like one-way communication with no human interaction and more ever. This is where the Nike Training Club has become my go-to when I want to have some fun while working out. First, it comes with pre-recorded video content from certified trainers.

Unlike most workout apps, all the exercises in NTC are taught by experts and feel like having a one-on-one conversation. Another huge plus is that it is completely free to use. Both Nike and Adidas offer free apps. Adidas recently shifted its focus to running, while Nike started offering all its content for free.

  • The app has an extensive food database for logging meals.

When it comes to achieving your fitness goals, proper nutrition is important in supporting your workouts, maximizing your performance, and improving your overall body structure. While few apps offer nutrition planning as an option, however, they are limited. For better diet planning you can use the popular MyFitness pan.

The app includes an extensive food database where users can log their meals and count their nutrient intake. You can scan the barcodes on food packages to quickly determine nutrients and calorie content. The app displays detailed information about calories, micro-, and macronutrients so users can make informed decisions about their food intake.

Another feature of this app that I personally really like is the meal planning feature, where you can choose different plans like nutrition plans, meal plans, and more. Some other apps by developer include two running apps for 5k and 10k distance training, a gym workout planner, and training apps to go from zero to 100 or so push ups, sit ups, etc.

garmin venu 2 review garmin connect fitness age

Garmin Connect’s an essential piece of software if you own a Garmin device . It’s also a core part of the company’s health tracking experience, logging data garnered from smartwatches, heart rate belts, and more. This is great for those who wish to visualize past workout data to contextualize present gains. Garmin Connect also acts as a bridge for accessories to connect to Strava, MyFitnessPal, and other apps.

Price: Free / $9.99 per month

Leap Fitness is another developer on Google Play with a bunch of home workout apps. Its flagship app makes home workouts that require little to no equipment, including both warm-up and recovery routines. You can customize the workout to your needs and the app has video and animation guides for each workout it contains. The developer also has apps for losing weight, developing a six pack, counting steps, drinking water, and even an app solely for stretches. The main app has a lot of free options and an optional $9.99 per month subscription if you need it.

Map My Fitness screenshot 2020

MapMyFitness is a developer on Google Play with four truly excellent home workout apps. Well, technically, you don’t do the exercises from home. The developer’s apps include Map My Ride, Map My Walk, and Map My Run. All three of these apps do basically the same thing. You can map out your jogging route, your walking route, or your bike riding route. You then do the routes, compare stats, and try to improve. The developer’s fourth app, Map My Fitness, is a gym app so it doesn’t quite work for this list, but the other three are great if you want to walk, ride, or bike around and track yourself doing it.

Peloton screenshot 2021

Peloton is an excellent home workout app. It packs a host of guided workouts across several disciplines, including treadmill running and strength training. In addition, Peloton also includes basic logging features, keeping track of workout streaks. When used with its range of bikes, you’ll gain access to additional info snippets, from power output to cadence and heart rate data. Peloton isn’t cheap, though. You’ll need around $13 a month to access the app, while the hardware (if you want it too) will cost you even more.

A female runner opens the Strava mobile app on their iPhone 11.

Would a fitness app list be complete without Strava? Unlikely. This is a remarkably versatile app for those training beyond the home and under their roof. Many disciplines are available to track, too, including elliptical training, stair stepper tracking, yoga, weight training, and general workouts. The app records your heart rate data via your sensor and the total time of the workout itself. It’s probably not the most fleshed-out experience compared to other apps on this list, but if you’re already a Strava user, it’s a feature worth knowing.

Price: $4.99

You Are Your Own Gym is one of the most unique home workout apps. It doesn’t require any actual workout equipment. However, it makes creative use of everyday household items to aid in workouts. For instance, you can use a towel and a door knob to do a neat hybrid squat. The app includes over 200 exercises, each with guides on how to do them. There are DVD-style workouts available on Google Play as well for extra money. This is definitely something a little different than you’d find in most other apps and it has a single, up-front cost with no subscriptions.

Price: Free / $5.99 per month / $34.99 per year

Zombies, Run! is a neat workout game. You simply go for a walk or a run around the block while the app is active. The app tells you a story of a zombie apocalypse as you gain distance. From there, through the magic of storytelling, you’re basically running for your life from hungry, violent zombies instead of just going for a jog. The game includes over 300 story missions to play through and you can put them to your own custom playlists for added motivational bonus.

Looking for the best workout apps can be tough, especially if you’re looking for a free app. One of the most frustrating things about browsing an app store on your Android device or iPhone is that almost every workout app says they’re free, but with in-app purchases. Once you install the app, however, you realize that the in-app purchase is to unlock full use of the workout app.

Other times, the free version is so limited that it almost forces you to pay for the premium deal. It may make you think that there aren’t any truly free workout apps available. But, I’m here to say that’s not the case.

The Garage Gym Reviews team of expert testers and reviewers has tested over 50 of the best online personal trainers and other fitness apps, and we’ve determined the ones that have a dedicated free version that can still bring value to the table. Ranging in modes of training and fitness levels, read on for our picks of the best free workout apps.

Pros & Cons

  • Free version offers a library of curated workout plans
  • Reportedly easy-to-use
  • Personalized macronutrient goals only available with paid versions

Bottom Line

Caliber Strength Training is a fitness coaching program grounded in scientific principles designed to increase strength and improve body composition. The app offers both group and individual training plans which are written and modified by a certified coach based on progress.

In making our list of the best workout apps, Caliber topped our list for its expansive features for group training and one-on-one training; however, its free version is still quite extensive and backed by research, making it our top pick for best free workout app as well.

With the free version, you can log your own workouts, or let the Caliber algorithm create a custom workout program for you, based on a quick assessment while setting up the app. The app is free of ads and contains a library of over 500 exercises. Caliber also records and charts strength progress and body metrics—body weight, waist size, and body fat percentage.

RELATED: Best Online Workout Programs

Each exercise has an extensive overview of the movement, including a video, complete step-by-step instructions, a muscle map displaying the body parts most involved, and even key points and takeaways on form. That’s a lot of information for each exercise, leading us to rate the instruction a 5 out of 5.

screenshots of caliber app

The free version also has good supportive features, as Caliber has groups you can join for common interests. Our tester, GGR writer Amanda Capritto says about the groups, “I joined groups for mountain biking, camping and hiking, cycling, running, and swimming. Each group has its own little social feed where you can post things and interact with others.” Amanda gave the interactive features a 5 out of 5, although she adds, “There’s not a ton of engagement in these groups, but maybe they will grow as Caliber grows.”

One callout that Amanda has is that Caliber lacks integration with common fitness trackers. “I wish the app integrated with Garmin or other fitness trackers instead of only Apple Watch. I have to manually input my walks and  runs into the app after I’ve already logged them on my watch.” The rest of the app works well enough, so Amanda rated the ease of use a 4 out of 5.

Best for Variety

Nike Training Club

homework workout app

  • Completely free
  • Massive library of on-demand workouts and live classes
  • More than 10 workout categories
  • App is easy to use
  • No individualized programming
  • Completely free to use
  • Previously premium/paid content is available for free
  • Most workouts taught my certified trainers and instructors
  • Audio controls can be finicky
  • Sometimes hard to see on-screen metrics like reps and time

Nike Training Club is a free fitness app with a robust workout library that includes one-off workouts as well as periodized programs led by certified instructors.

Unlike most apps on this list, Nike Training Club doesn’t have a free and premium version; it’s just free. During the pandemic in 2020, Nike decided to make their app completely free, including specialist tips on nutrition, recovery, and weight loss, providing huge value in a free app for all people on their fitness journey.

Our product tester, GGR writer and certified personal trainer Amanda Capritto, rates the value a 5 out of 5, saying, “Nike Training Club has on-demand and live classes as well as periodized programming for a variety of goals and workout types, and all of the instructors are certified, most are specialists.” She adds, “You don’t see this kind of value in a free app almost ever.”

homework workout app

The app features a variety of workouts—hundreds in different formats, from written workouts to perform at your own pace, to on-demand and live fitness classes with excellent instruction that Amanda rates a 4 out of 5. Workouts cover different modalities, from strength training. HIIT, and cardio, to yoga, pilates, and mobility work. Equipment is needed for most workouts, but Amanda says you can filter your search for workouts by the type of gym equipment needed.

If you’re looking for accountability, however, this may not be the best app for you. Amanda rates the accountability a 3.5 out of 5, as the shoe and apparel company’s app provides basic notifications and challenges. She adds, “In terms of accountability, this is your basic fitness app. You can download it on your phone, but no one is gonna make you use it.”

homework workout app

  • Fitness app with GPS
  • Tracks routes, distances, pace, etc.
  • Select from 600+ activities like including running, cycling, yoga, etc.
  • Large community of athletes
  • MVP version offers training plans and coaching tips
  • Premium features include live tracking and audio coaching
  • GPS integration
  • Great community aspect
  • MVP version is affordable
  • Lots of options with free version
  • Integrates with most trackers and wearable
  • Plan and track your own routes
  • Requires MVP subscription to unlock some features

Map My Fitness is a well-established and widely-used fitness tool that allows you to choose from a huge variety of workouts with some really notable features. Whether you're working out in a gym or looking for a route to run, Map My Fitness has got you covered.

Also known as Map My Run, the best free workout app for runners goes to Map My Fitness, with its expansive GPS tracking and other free features. And while we’re here talking about free features, our tester, Amanda Capritto, CPT, CNC, CES, CF-L1, says the monthly subscription can be worth it, with analyses for heart rate, power output, running cadence, and more—all for under $6 a month. “You’re really getting a lot for the price,” Amanda says, rating the level of instruction a 5 out of 5.

Provided by Under Armour, Map My Fitness is easy to set up and sync with other apps and devices, like Garmin, Apple Health, UA connected footwear, MyFitnessPal, and others. The interface is clean and easy to navigate as well, leading Amanda to rate both the setup and ease of use a 5 out of 5.

MapMyFitness app screenshot

As for accountability and interactive features, there aren’t a lot in this running app . Push notifications are present, and you can create and join plans to help with holding yourself accountable—but that’s only present in the premium version. There is basic community interaction through a community feed, but if you’re looking for a lot of support in your fitness journey, you may want to look for a different running app.

The GPS support seems to work well enough, as Amanda tested its accuracy with other GPS trackers she uses, and it was comparable to those apps and trackers. She gave it a 3-out-of-5 rating, as it still wasn’t always accurate, getting within about a tenth of a mile for accuracy.

Best for Gym-Goers

homework workout app

  • Free workout tracking platform consisting of over 1400 exercises
  • Includes pro-designed workout plans, and a workout planning tool that logs workouts
  • Monitor progress (including body measurements) and set target muscles to work
  • Elite membership option opens up premium workout plans and eliminates ads
  • Extensive free version
  • Workouts made by professional coaches
  • Monitoring progress
  • Syncs with Apple watch
  • Free version has a lot of ads
  • Not many cardio options

JeFit is a free workout tracking platform with professionally designed workout routines plans and progress monitoring tools. There is an elite membership for those looking for an ad-free experience.

For the gym-goer—or home gym user—who’s looking for a workout tracker with a comprehensive library of exercises, there’s Jefit. Jefit’s free version allows you to log and track your workouts, as well as gives you access to some workout routines, although many are locked behind the elite subscription.

RELATED: Home Gym vs Gym Membership

GGR head of content and certified personal trainer Kate Meier tried out Jefit and was impressed with the library of exercises, saying, “there is a huge library of exercises with all kinds of equipment: free weights, cable machines, bodyweight, and more.” However, she rates the total instruction as a 4 out of 5, adding, “There isn’t any exercise cuing unless you upgrade to Elite, and then there are some ‘audio tip’ workouts, but there aren’t many.”

Although the library of exercises is expansive, just be aware that the functionality is limited in the free version. Kate explains, “I entered all the movements for a weightlifting workout, but the app ordered them alphabetically instead of in the order I wanted. To move them, I would have had to upgrade to the Elite plan.” She also found it easier to navigate through the desktop version for workout plans, and then locate them on the app afterwards.

Screenshots of the Jefit app

While many of their workout plans are locked behind the subscription plan, the app still provides some free gym workouts, like the 3-Day Core Superset Routine, which Kate did and enjoyed. Navigating through workout plans is pretty easy as well, leading Kate to rate the ease of use a 4 out of 5.

  • Monthly membership app that provides access to thousands of studios, gyms, spas, salons, and more located across the world
  • Memberships vary and work off credits used to book classes or appointments
  • Reservations have varying credit rates based on appointment time, business, location, popularity, booking time, and your visit frequency to that business
  • One month free trial followed by automatic enrollment into 28 credits/month
  • Well-suited for those who travel
  • Available worldwide
  • Variety of wellness activities to choose from to keep routine fresh
  • There seems to be a lot of negative feedback regarding the cancellation policy, late-fees, and unclear policies overall
  • May not be ideal for small town/rural areas as there are not as many options to choose from

This monthly membership app is well-suited for those who like variety in their wellness routine as it provides access to thousands of wellness spots worldwide, using credits for bookings. Overall, the feedback from users is negative highlighting potential issues with their cancellation policies and limited options in less populated areas.

If you’re looking for guided workouts, ClassPass can be used in two ways. The first, and more well-known aspect of ClassPass, is that you can search for and participate in local fitness classes—HIIT, boot camp, kettlebell classes, plus salon appointments. This requires a paid subscription plan, where you get a monthly amount of credits to use towards dropping into a class. You get  28 free credits for your first month of ClassPass for anyone looking for deals.

RELATED: The Benefits of Group Exercise

However, ClassPass also has a database of workout videos that are completely free to users; you don’t even need to be on a subscription plan. Just like their local class options, these trainer-led workout videos vary from strength training to high-intensity workouts and everything in between.

Screenshots of the classpass app

Our tester, Megan Capritto (GGR senior staff writer Amanda Capritto’s sister) tried out ClassPass and found the setup and ease of use both quick and simple, rating both a 5 out of 5. “After setup, the user experience was very simple,” Megan says. “All the icons are listed at the bottom and they are super easy to navigate.” To search local classes, you just use the search icon, and the videos are in another section.

Videos are guided by experts, and provide tips and tutorials of each exercise during the video. Still, within the app there aren’t any interactive features to have support from any community. Megan rates the interactive features a 2 out of 5, saying, “There is no community board to post your workouts or see other people’s workouts. The most interaction you can do is invite and refer friends through the app.”

  • SmartWOD timer is free and Includes timers for AMRAP, For Time, EMOMs, and TABATAs
  • Features a workout log to track progress, round counter, exercise demos, warm-up recommendations, workout filters, and the opioid to create your own WOD
  • Collection of over 5,000 WODs including benchmark, partner, bodyweight, travel-friendly, and chipper workouts
  • Scaled down options for suggested weights on the generator
  • Variety of workouts
  • Some users find the generator fun
  • Free (Timer)
  • Filtering options could be better on generator
  • Lots of ads on SmartWOD Timer

SmartWOD offers both a free timer and workout generator which creates high-intensity workouts customized to available equipment. The generator does cost $54.99 but it is a lifetime purchase.

Any functional fitness lover will appreciate the variety of CrossFit exercises available on SmartWOD. This app is a WOD generator as well as a WOD creator, so you can search for workouts or make your own custom workout, using the app’s integrated timer and marking off reps and rounds. If you’re looking for a quick, new workout to do, SmartWOD can provide it.

Amanda tested the app and says, “This is a fun app—very fun if you like CrossFit. You select what equipment you have access to and then press a little spinner button and it generates a random workout.” This can be great for traveling with access to limited equipment, or to just find a workout when you don’t have one ready to go.

Screenshots of the SmartWOD app

You filter out the workouts by the equipment you have as well as skills. “For instance,” Amanda explains, “you could select a pull-up bar for equipment but then deselect muscle-ups for skills and it won’t serve you any workouts with muscle-ups.” The app also lets you know the amount of workouts you still have available to choose from. The app is very easy to use, and Amanda rates it a 5 out of 5 in its ease of use.

Like many free workout apps, there are limited interactive features and accountability—none, to be exact, earning a 1 out of 5 in both of these aspects. Still, if you’re looking for a fun way to get a quick workout in, SmartWOD provides countless workouts that can be catered to your skillset and equipment available.

Good for: Cyclists wanting an app with a community presence and integration with top fitness trackers

  • Activity tracking app: track over 30 sports
  • Turns phone into a running/cycling computer
  • Free and subscription options
  • Tracks variety of workouts
  • Beacon live tracking available on free tier
  • Provides lots of data
  • Compatible with thousands of devices
  • Many fan-favorite features behind paywall
  • Some users wished the auto-pause feature was more sensitive
  • Have to visit website on desktop to use some features like adding a new pair of shoes

Strava’s tracking app allows you to track 30 different sports and, with a subscription, provides a wide variety of statistics to analyze your workouts.

If you’re a cyclist, or any endurance athlete, a great app for tracking your bike routes is Strava. Not only is the GPS tracking pretty accurate, but there is a social element that separates it from most other free cycling apps .

“I think the social network-esque aspect of it is what really differentiates it from other free cycling GPS apps,” our tester and long-time Strava user Amanda Capritto says. “You can follow people on Strava just like on Instagram or Twitter.” Along with that, Strava encourages group challenges and interaction  with other athletes through clubs. Strava gets a 5 out of 5 for its interactive features.

Strava also integrates and syncs automatically to major fitness tracker brands popular among cyclists and runners—Garmin, Polar, Wahoo, and FitBit, for example. You can connect your Zwift account and indoor bike to Strava as well, so indoor rides populate the app as well.

Screenshots of the Strava app

Amanda also finds the GPS to be very accurate. She gives the accuracy a 4.5 out of 5, saying, “I sometimes run into problems when cycling through the downtown area of Miami where buildings can impede the GPS signal. But other than that, it does a great job.”

The free app will analyze basic workout stats, but for a deeper dive into statistics, the premium subscription is needed. Also, GPS apps like Strava aren’t incredibly private and can reveal a lot about your location and other information. This may be something to consider before jumping into an app like this. You can read all of our thoughts on this app in our Strava fitness app review .

homework workout app

  • Comprehensive health and fitness app providing workouts, guided courses that target chronic health conditions, and health articles
  • Variety of workouts including cardio, yoga, strength, HIIT, and Pilates
  • Ability to invite friends to share progress, workouts, and more
  • Free and Pro versions available
  • Free version gives access to all workouts
  • All-inclusive and comprehensive health app
  • Reported to be intuitive and easy-to-use
  • Lots of variety in classes
  • To unlock a lot of features you need the paid version
  • Paid version is a six month or yearly commitment (no monthly option)
  • May not be ideal for heavy lifting or strength training

This is a comprehensive health and fitness app that offers a wide range of workouts, guided courses for chronic health conditions, health articles, and the option to share progress with friends. If you are looking for an app to specifically make massive strength gains, this may not be for you.

FitOn is a great service for people just dipping their toes into the fitness world, mainly because it’s free and gives you access to tons of guided workout videos, still all for free. While the premium option can give you special features like premium music options to spice up your playlist, personalized meal plans, and offline downloads to workouts, the bulk of the app is free.

When I think of an app for a beginner, I would want value, ease of use, and good instruction. You get all of those with FitOn. Megan Capritto, sister of GGR senior staff writer Amanda Capritto and our tester for FitOn, found the interface for the app very easy to use and intuitive, giving it 5 stars out of 5. There is also solid instruction for each of the trainer-led workout videos.

Screenshots of one of the best free workout apps Fiton

Megan says a motivated trainer is on screen for each workout and shows how to perform each movement, rating the level of instruction a 4 out of 5. She adds, “Most workouts have modifications shown, too. At my intermediate fitness level, the instructions were sufficient and I could follow along easily.”

If you’re looking for long-term workout plans, FitOn may not be ideal. There are workout programs available on FitOn, but they’re shorter ones—about 2 to 4 weeks long. Megan says, “the 4-week program has 10 workouts. That’s not enough time to make much progress.” Also, the community feed is present and available, but basic, earning just a 3 out of 5. Still, the amount of workouts you get with this app may still be worth it.

homework workout app

  • Free workout tracker that allows users to build routines and track progress
  • Pro version available
  • Monitors progress with exercise charts, personal records, calculated one-rep maxes, and a complete exercise history
  • Create notes for exercises to track weight, level of fatigue, or whatever you find relevant
  • Ability to connect with other users
  • Access to a library of form videos
  • Intuitive interface
  • A lot of customization
  • Reportedly good graphics to track progress
  • Big social aspect and community
  • Not much information available about the Pro version
  • Reports that the free version is limited

If you are on the hunt for a free workout tracker, Hevy enables users to create routines, monitor progress with exercise charts and personal records, make exercise-specific notes, and connect with other users.

If you’re looking for a simple workout tracker with an expansive community feed, look no further than Hevy, our pick for the best free app for community support. Along with a robust library of exercises to log your workouts, Heavy also has an entire community feed and social media aspect, where you can share your workouts, videos, and also like, comment, and follow other users and their workouts.

The workout tracker is basic but deep, allowing you to create your own workouts. If there is a workout that you frequent, you can create it as a workout routine to simplify logging it in. In addition, Heavy provides some basic strength training routines of their own, such as 5 x 5 back squats. You can look at Hevy’s and other user’s workouts for inspiration, if you’re not sure what to do that day.

RELATED: Proper Squat Form

When you log a workout, the app will give you neat little celebrations; for example, I was told my total tonnage after a squat workout was like lifting a car. It’s the little things, but that sort of interaction can help people through tough days.

Screenshots of the Hevy app

Between the community feed and the app’s interaction, I rate the app’s interactive features a 4.5 out of 5, as there is plenty enough to keep you motivated and involved, but has no true coaching aspect, outside of instruction on exercises.

Each workout you log will add to a heat map, showing muscle groups used more frequently than others. This can be a good indicator of which muscles you should focus on next, and which muscles might be a little tired from previous workouts.

There are notifications for accountability, but they’re all focused on the social media aspect, getting likes or follows. Because there’s no real way to remind you to workout, I scored the accountability a 1 out of 5. If you’re able to stay on task, there is a deep social network behind this simple workout tracker.

Good for: Runners looking to map their trail routes

Best for Outdoors

homework workout app

  • Over 400,000 trails available that have been verified by experts and reviewed by users
  • Customized search options narrow down trails based on preferences (ie distances, waterfalls, landmarks)
  • All trails come with a map, pictures, reviews, and descriptions
  • Utilize the map while on a trail (if GPS is available) to track and navigate the hike
  • Free version has a lot to offer
  • Tons of trails to search through
  • Descriptions, pictures, and reviews are very helpful
  • Reported to be a good option for beginners
  • Even customized searches yields overwhelming results
  • Not an intuitive interface
  • Without GPS, you can not use the app on the trail

This free app provides access to over 400,000 trails with customizable search options, maps, pictures, and reviews, making it helpful for beginners. There are several users who found that search results to be overwhelming and the interface confusing to navigate.

For the hiker who loves the outdoors and solid trails, AllTrails is an ideal app for you. While the premium version, AllTrails+, provides added features and details to your map, the free version has the basics needed for most trail hikes: access to guides, trail navigation, syncing with Garmin, and the ability to like and save trail routes.

The free version of AllTrails gives you access to hundreds of thousands of saved trails worldwide, making this a great tool for those who get the itch to travel. You can also save your favorite trails to an easy-to-access list, as well as create your own routes and trails. One thing to note is that you’ll have to make a free account to get full access to the free version—otherwise, your experience on the app and web version will be limited.

GGR writer and certified personal trainer Amanda Capritto uses the app for discovering new places for hiking, walking, backpacking, and mountain biking, and to navigate on those trails. “If I’m hiking, I use my Garmin watch to track the actual workout data and use AllTrails on my phone as a handheld GPS,” she explains. At the end of a hike, the app gives a summary similar to other route apps: distance, steps, a GPS map, and other data if synced with another tracking device.

RELATED: Best Walking Apps

The free version does have one major limitation if you’re trying to get off the beaten path, though. The app only works in areas with cell service; to be able to download a trail route for offline use, you’ll need the pro version of AllTrails. “This is helpful (and critical, I’d argue) if you’re in the backcountry with questionable cell service, especially if you don’t have any other navigational tools or are unfamiliar with the area,” Amanda argues.

While the free version is extensive, if you’re going on some deep country trails, it may be worth it to upgrade.

  • Other Free Workout Apps We Researched and Tested

We’ve tested over 50 fitness apps, personal training apps, and training programs, free and paid,. With that said, there are tons of great options available, but may not make our final list of the best free fitness apps. Here are some of the competitors worth mentioning:

  • Sweat : This fitness app has plenty of ways to track metrics, including daily water and steps tracking. However, this app doesn’t have a free version; instead, you can try Sweat for a 7-day free trial.
  • Zombies, Run! : This is a fun workout app to mention, as it takes cardio exercise and game-ifies the running experience. The free version has several missions available, while the subscription version unlocks more missions and challenges.
  • Freeletics : While this app has workouts available for free, our tester Megan Capritto felt the instruction for workouts and exercises was lacking a bit. The app shows animations but has no explanation on proper form. “For me, this was a bit challenging because there was no one to tell me how to do the move or have the correct form,” Megan adds.
  • Daily Yoga : This daily fitness app for yoga also has workouts in pilates, HIIT, and guided meditation. However, our tester, GGR editor Frieda Johnson, felt that the yoga app’s free version was very limited, and the user experience was terrible. She says, “You are forced to go through the ‘quiz’ every time you open the app, and they’re pushing the paid version constantly with pop-ups and ad banners.”
  • Johnson & Johnson 7-Minute Workout : This free-forever workout app is great for short, quick full-body workouts for people constantly on the move. However, we haven’t tested this product as this app will be retired by the end of the year.
  • How We Picked and Tested the Best Free Workout Apps

Each workout app we’ve tested has been rated across 14 different aspects to determine the best fitness apps. To compile our list of the best free workout apps, we used the same methodology, except for the caveat that the app had to have a free version.

man looking at future training app on phone

We also made the distinction that free apps mean that there is a free version of the app available—not just a free trial. Each item that makes the list may have a premium version, but there is a free version that is robust and easy enough to use to be added onto this list.

Here are a few other factors we used in determining scores for our top free fitness apps:

  • Setup and ease of use: Apps should have a quick setup, simply making an account or answering a quick assessment. After setup, the fitness app should still remain pretty intuitive to navigate.
  • Accountability and interactive features: Apps that score high here have ways to keep you motivated and accountable, either through push notifications, a community of support on social media, or having a personal coach—although a personal coach is rare to see on a free workout app.
  • Instruction: Even free fitness apps should have decent instruction, with guided workouts that at the very least describe and show exercises being done.
  • Workout variety: Some apps specialize in one mode of training, but the best apps can accommodate for many different kinds of workouts and any level of fitness equipment available.
  • Benefits of Free Workout Apps

Getting a personalized training plan can be expensive. If you’re not looking for involved workout routines and the support of a one-on-one coach or certified personal trainer, then a free workout app will save you a lot of money and still provide you with solid workout plans and support through an online community.

RELATED: Best Personal Training Certifications

In addition, a workout app can be convenient in a couple of ways. It can help you keep all of your workout records in one place, without having to scour notebooks or fitness logs to check for your one-rep-max deadlift. Also, the app can allow you to train wherever—either at-home workouts or while traveling—cutting down on commutes to a commercial gym.

  • What to Look for in Free Workout Apps

Ready to find the right free workout app for you? Other than finding one at the low, low price of free , here are some things to consider for the right fitness app for you.

Type of Training

What are your fitness goals? You should know the type of training you should do to best achieve those goals. While many fitness apps have diverse options of daily workouts—HIIT, strength training, cardio, and barre—some apps may specialize in only one or two modes of training.

RELATED: Benefits of Strength Training

Man deadlifting with the Xero Shoes Forza Trainers

Basically, if you’re looking to strength train with a lot of different equipment, you should find a workout tracker that provides a pretty comprehensive list of strength exercises. If you’re working on your running, an app that can track your GPS location will be extremely helpful. And if you’re looking to do a mix of things, find the app that offers that level of variety.

Workout Tracking

Different workout apps will provide different levels of tracking for workouts. Most free ones allow you to record loads and times for daily workouts, but you might also be able to track basic metrics, like weight, water, and inches. Again, make sure the tracking and logging functions match the needs of your fitness goals.

Other Interactive Features

It’s important to know the type of person you are when looking for an ideal workout app for you. Do you need a bit of motivation? Try to find an app with a community that can push you. Furthermore, some apps reward badges for hitting new personal records which, just like a follow on social media, can feel very rewarding.

If you don’t feel the need for an online support system, there are still ways to stay on top of your workouts. Some apps will add calendar reminders or push notifications to help remind you of your workout schedule for the week.

  • Best Free Workout Apps: FAQs

What is the best free app to track weight lifting?

A couple of our favorite free apps for tracking strength training is Jefit. It allows you to track your own strength training workouts with their library of exercises, each with written and visual instructions. Another good workout tracker is Hevy, which has a robust community of support where you can share your workouts and view, like and comment on others’ workouts.

What is the best free workout app?

Free workout apps have great value, providing basic instructions with libraries of exercises and workouts at no cost to you. Here are some of our favorite free workout apps:

Is FitOn really free?

FitOn has a 100% free version, which gives you access to their database of workouts. You have full access to unlimited workouts in the free version, but FitOn does offer its Pro version, which gives access to more features, such as:

—Premium music options —Personalized meal plans —An exclusive library of recipes —Unlimited offline downloads of workouts —Connectivity with fitness trackers to measure your real-time heart rate

Is there a 100% free workout app?

Several apps on the Apple store or Google Play claim they’re free with in-app purchases; however, when you download the app, you realize the in-app purchase is to unlock use of the app at all.

Still, quite a few of the best workout apps have a free version, but to unlock all features, you’ll have to subscribe to a pro or premium edition of the app.

With that said, there are a couple of fitness apps that have a fully functioning app and all of its features are available for free. One such app is Nike Training Club, which was made free during the pandemic.

Apple Fitness+

Recreation, Standing, Electronic device, Technology, Display device, Watch, Gadget, Animation, Games, Multimedia,

Apple launched its first fitness experience earlier this month. Apple Fitness+ incorporates metrics from your Apple Watch into personalised fitness workout videos, available to view on all Apple devices. Dozens of workouts are available, from rowing to dance and cycling to yoga. Apple Fitness+ aims to keep you motivated by highlighting your metrics on screen at key points during your workout and displaying a calorie-burn graphic to signpost your efforts in certain workouts and see how it stacks up against other users. The only catch is – unsurprisingly – you need an Apple Watch.

Strava is the UK's most popular running and cycling tracker app, offering a Facebook-style community of fitness enthusiasts. Log miles, give friends 'Kudos' for their efforts and earn medals for local Strava-approved routes.

Want to hit a workout like Chris Hemsworth ? Of course you do. With Centr, Hemsworth's very own fitness plan, you can do exactly that. Along with Luke Zocchi , Hemsworth's personal trainer, you can utilise the team that's responsible for getting the Hollywood leading man in serious shape. The app’s ethos is about having an all-round healthy lifestyle, featuring workouts alongside guided meditations. If that’s not enough, you can steal Hemsworth’s diet plan too.

Grey,

Peleton's app has cycling, running, bootcamp, outdoor, floor and yoga workouts as standard, helping you get a sweat on at home. The best part? You don't need to have their spin bike installed to get your fit fix.

With over 5000 WOD’s in its collection, there truly is a workout for every ability and occasion. While there is a free version of the app that gives you access to 5 per cent of workouts, the premium version is still very affordable at £1.79 per month.

Seven – Quick At Home Workouts

Got seven minutes to put aside daily? Perfect for the "I don't have time to exercise" posse, 'Seven' is a fast, fun and effective app that uses "scientific studies to provide the maximum benefit in the shortest time possible," whether you want to gain muscle, lose fat or just maintain fitness. Using a bank of 200 exercises, you can tailor your workout to what you need. Did we mention that it's free, too?

Freeletics uses 'digital personal trainers' to help you get a workout in anywhere, with no requirement for a gym. The workouts are short and the guided workouts come with audio coaching to help you get the most out of your workout. There's a free version or three separate subscription models.

If you're spending more time indoors than usual, it could be an ideal time to work on your flexibility and mobility . RomWOD will help you do exactly that, with daily videos designed to improve your range of motion (ROM), increase athletic performance and recovery game. Okay, so this isn't exactly a home workout app, but Run Keeper will track workouts (for running, walking, hiking and cycling), help you set goals — from running further to losing weight — and provides plans appropriate to your goal. It also connects with smartwatches like Fitbit and Apple watch, while connecting to MyFitnessPal too. Nifty, huh?

Structure your workouts, plan your sessions and watch the gains roll in. With hundreds of workouts designed by Gymshark athletes, like Steve Cook , you can also take it to the gym once you're ready. The app also includes step-by-step exercise breakdowns to help make any move seem approachable.

Another pioneer in remote training for riders and runners alike, Zwift transforms tedious turbo rides and treadmill slogs into challenging, social sweat sessions. Pair any Bluetooth-enabled treadmill or static bike to the app and power your avatar around the roads of six virtual worlds, including a futuristic New York. There are more than 1,000 workouts to choose from, plus around 300 group races each day, giving you the chance to dish the dirt as they eat your (pixel) dust.

Maintaining daily yoga practice is laudable, but not everyone has 90 minutes to spare posing to pan pipes. Glo is your solution. It offers thousands of yoga, Pilates and meditation sessions, promising to improve your mental state, posture and mobility. Plus, you can save up lessons to use offline. You can “happy baby” from the comfort of your own home.

What Peloton did for your spin session, Rowith can do for your dry-land rows. The app, launching soon, transforms your monotonous ergo training into inspiring full-body workouts, with audio-guided coaching and tips from gold-medal Olympic rowers, such as Steve Redgrave. Choose from a deep pool of sessions that adapt as you progress from oar amateur to Boat Race hopeful. You can even challenge friends to really spice up your time in the hot seat.

Find Your Trainer

Table of contents.

Working out in the gym just isn't in the cards all the time. Whether you don't have time, find gyms to be intimidating, simply don't like going to a physical gym, or something else is preventing you from going, you can still exercise. Workout apps allow you to meet your fitness goals at home, and they may actually be the motivation you need to get moving.

Luckily, there are a ton of fitness apps out there. Unfortunately, that can be a bit overwhelming if you don't know what you're looking for.

What fitness app is best for me?

First of all, decide what kind of exercises you want to do. Are you into strength training? Is yoga more your thing? Or do you want a fitness plan that focuses on cardio? You'll also need to figure out what your goals are, whether it's weight loss, muscle toning, or something else.

If losing weight is a top priority, look for online fitness programs that have strict routines and meal plans to follow.

Traditional gym exercises don't work for everybody, and that's where many of these fitness classes come in. There are some apps that do focus on workouts you'd do at a gym, but quite a few apps offer more than that. The beauty of virtual fitness programs is that you can take classes from top-rated professional trainers from the comfort of your living room, and you can try out things like HIIT (high-intensity interval training), dance cardio, and other fun exercises your local gym or studio might not offer.

Benefits of online fitness programs

The obvious benefit of workout apps is that you don't have to leave your house. Additionally, you can learn at your own pace while still getting access to personal trainers (often without paying those pricey trainer fees).

You're also able to start out at whatever fitness level feels comfortable, and with many workout apps offering free trials, you can try out a few before fully committing. As with most things in the age of the internet, you can find super niche fitness programs that give you exactly what you're looking for in a home workout.

Do I need special equipment to use a workout app?

Not necessarily. Most online fitness programs and workout apps require nothing more than some motivation and a few feet of open floor space. Oftentimes, exercises on apps can be customized based on what you do have — so if you do have a yoga mat but nothing else, you can open your options to routines that require a cushioned surface. (Some Youtubers even use water bottles in place of lightweight dumbbells.)

But some super-advanced programs require heavy-duty special equipment, like The Mirror's interactive mirror or Fight Camp's special Punch Trackers or punching bag. We'll make a special note about programs that require these extra purchases outside of a membership.

screenshots from beach body app

Best For Losing Weight

If you like the idea of getting real-time feedback from a trainer, you'll like Beach Body . In addition to on-demand recorded classes, Beach Body offers live, interactive classes led by personal trainers who get to know you and your goals. The online Openfit community is a bonus, too, where you can share your experiences and motivate each other.

Along with fitness advice, the app also provides nutrition guidance in the form of daily meal plans. It's a one-of-a-kind customizable experience that's the next best thing to an in-person trainer or nutritionist.

A set of dumbbells is required to take advantage of Beach Body's programs.

  • Specialized fitness programs
  • Personalized meal plans
  • Personal coaches
  • Real-time feedback
  • Some users experienced issues canceling their subscriptions
  • Workouts done on the TV might not record in the app
  • Free trial: 14 days
  • 3-month plan: 3-month plan: $13/month
  • 6-month plan: 6-month plan: $10/month
  • 12-month plan: Annual plan: $8/month

screenshot of classpass app

Best Mix Of Fitness, Wellness, And Beauty

Fitness studios have emerged as the stylish alternative to a traditional gym. The ClassPass app is your ticket to one of the largest digital workout varieties and some of the most hype on-screen trainers. It's especially handy if your area doesn't offer the uniqueness and specificity that ClassPass does, from aqua cycling to the famous spin classes.

Subscriptions work a little differently at ClassPass. Instead of a monthly rate that covers unlimited access to as many live or on-demand workouts as you want, you'll pay a fee based on how many credits (which pay for courses) you may take that month.

  • Easy to sync subscription to local IRL classes
  • Two-week free trial
  • Plan includes wellness sessions like massages
  • Credits can also go toward salons or massages
  • Taking a class even once a week per month gets pricey
  • $19/month: 10 credits and up to 2 classes
  • $49/month: 27 credits and up to 7 classes
  • $79/month: 45 credits and up to 12 classes
  • $159/month: 100 credits and up to 28 classes
  • $199/month: 130 credits up to 36 classes

screenshots of peloton app

Best For Cyclists

Even people to detest exercise know what Peloton is. Workouts available on the Peloton app go far past biking, so the Peloton bike itself isn't technically required. But with so many Peloton die-hards praising the app as one of the best cardio workouts out there, the cycling aspect deserves a spotlight.

Unfortunately, the all-access membership isn't free with the bike — you'll have to cough up an extra $39 per month. But it's worth it: Peloton is community-based and offers the chance to ride with other members. Classes are fun to follow along, lead by instructors who are famously upbeat. Real-time metrics liked heart rate, resistance, cadence, and output are super helpful.

  • Live and on-demand classes
  • Peloton app included with bike membership
  • Real-time metrics
  • Motivating music and instructors
  • Peloton bike: $2,245
  • All-access membership: $39/month
  • Peloton digital membership: $12.99/month

Best For Runners

Running might not seem like something you need an app for, but the Nike Run Club app takes your running routine to the next level. Through it you're able to track your runs, get coaching that adapts to you, and connect with your runner friends. NRC shows you your pace, location, distance, elevation, heart rate, and mile splits.

The app features guided runs and tons of motivational tactics, like cheers from friends and words of encouragement from professional athletes. It also has curated Apple Music and Spotify playlists to keep you pumped up on your runs. Plus, you get personalized coaching that adapts with your goals and fitness level as you progress.

  • Curated playlists
  • Personalized coaching
  • Comprehensive running stats
  • App experiences some glitches recording workouts
  • Price: Free

Best For Easy Meal Plans

Jillian Michaels' fitness app isn't your mother's collection of early-2000s Shred DVDs (though those are included with a subscription). The aura is less threatening than apps that revolve around getting ripped, offering customization by time, specific muscle groups, and difficulty.

Following the plan nixes the need to input every food item for nutrition tracking and can be altered for diet preferences, weight loss or muscle gain, number of mouths being fed, and more.

  • Super customizable workout generator
  • Stellar reviews in the App Store
  • Reasonably priced
  • Includes entire Jillian Michaels DVD collection
  • Barely any time between consecutive workouts
  • One month: $14.99
  • 3-month plan: $11.66/month (billed $34.99 quarterly)
  • Annual plan: $9.99/month (billed $119.99 yearly)

screenshot of mirror app

Best For An At-home Fitness Studio

Mirror is like having a personal trainer in your home with you. The super smart screen designed to look like a full-length mirror has a sleek design and doesn't take up too much space. Mirror offers more than 20 genres of workouts with classes ranging from 15 to 60 minutes and beginner to expert levels. It's basically a super personalized and diverse fitness studio that happens to be located in your house.

There are more than 10,000 on-demand classes and more than 70 weekly live classes. During live classes you get real-time feedback and personal shoutouts throughout the session. A Mirror subscription includes unlimited access for up to six users, so the whole family can work out together. And yes, Mirror is a real full-length mirror when it's off.

Mirror requires special equipment that is separate from the price of a membership.

  • Multiple users
  • On-demand and live classes
  • Non-invasive design
  • Mirror cost: $1,495
  • Monthly plan: $39/month

screenshot of sweat app

Best For Women

The Sweat app combines intense workouts with female empowerment. There are five trainers who focus on exercises like low-intensity cardio, HIIT, weight training, bodybuilding, vinyasa yoga, and more.

Workouts are designed as a program and the intensity level increases with each week, encouraging you to get stronger. The app also features weekly meal plans and grocery shopping lists. Plus, Sweat has a forum where you can connect with other women using the platform.

  • Focused on female empowerment
  • Workouts will actually have you sweating and working
  • Workouts are not super customizable
  • Free trial: No
  • Monthly plan: $19.99/month
  • 3-month plan: $54.99 every 3 months
  • Annual plan: $119.94/year

screenshot of tonal app

Best Gym Replacement

Tonal is the ideal in-home solution for people who like the range of machines at the gym, but don't like sharing them. Instead of taking up a bunch of space in your garage or basement, Tonal provides everything in a compact touchscreen display (plus a few extra items).

Accessories like handles, a bench, and bar are sold separately, and the bundle of six items costs $495 in addition to the steep base price. You don't have to get the accessories bundle to still get a satisfying workout, but Tonal is definitely a product for those who have a little extra spending room.

Tonal requires special equipment that is separate from the price of a membership.

  • Full body-sized display mounts to the wall
  • Compatible with actual equipment
  • Incorporates different machine exercises
  • Accessories sold separately
  • Tonal price: $2,995
  • Smart accessories: $495
  • Monthly plan: $49/month

screenshots of aaptiv app

Best For Audio Workouts

With Aaptiv , you're able to really focus on your body and its movements. The platform is audio based, so there's no video for you to follow along. That means you don't have to crane your neck to pay attention to a screen while also trying to make sure you're doing the workout correctly.

Aaptiv workouts can be done anywhere — at home, at the gym, outside on a ridiculously sunny day — because all you need is your phone and some headphones. With a membership you get access to more than 2,500 guided workouts, with more than 40 new classes added each week. Each exercise has curated music to get you properly pumped.

  • New classes every week
  • Good music selections
  • No on-screen instructions means more freedom to move
  • Not for visual learners
  • Harder to tell if you're doing something correctly
  • Free trial: 7 days
  • Monthly plan: $14.99/month
  • Annual plan: $99.99/year

Each is typically 28 minutes long, but there are also 10-minute express classes for squeezing in a quick sweat during your lunch break.

Not being into HIIT with high-intensity Peloton or The Mirror instructors does not! mean! you're not an exercise person. Lower-impact toning sessions like Pvolve's pilates-barre hybrid might be more up your alley.

The Pvolve approach invites your mind to get a workout too, teaching better form, more mindful exercises, and sculpting without inevitable swamp ass or soreness. Workouts can be customized by time and the optional equipment kits, or try the "No equipment" series.

Best For Yoga

Maybe yoga is your go-to form of exercise. We recommend checking out Bulldog Yoga Online — especially if standard yoga studios intimidate you. Bulldog flips the switch on traditional yoga and teaches it in layman's terms and sets sessions to fun playlists. It's definitely a more active type of yoga than you might typically see.

Bulldog focuses on power yoga and its streaming classes vary in intensity with options for a slower flow, quick-moving and intense flow, and a fast flow that incorporates resistance bands for extra cardio and strength building. You'll get a full-body workout and work on muscle strength and endurance while losing weight.

Best For Boxing

Boxing is great cardio workout to shake things up — and a hell of a stress reliever. Instead of your average punching bag, Fight Camp uses smart sensors to track your workout and show you your punch count and rate. For a little competition, you can link up with friends on the FightCamp app and see how your scores compare.

Workouts can be customized (down to the specific trainer who gets you pumped), so you can keep your switch up your swings whenever one routine gets old.

Fight Camp requires special equipment that is separate from the price of a membership.

  • Personal trainers
  • Customized workouts
  • Motivational playlists
  • Punch tracker
  • Most reviewer complaints were just about the app's UI needing a couple improvements
  • FightCamp starter set: $1,219
  • FightCamp membership: $39/month

Best For One-on-one Training

If you want a combination of virtual and in-person training, Find Your Trainer is great. To start, you take a short quiz and FYT matches you with the best trainer for your goals. Then you book your training session virtually or in person and build a plan with them.

In-person sessions happen at your home, so you get the one-on-one attention and help you need without the intimidation of a gym. This service is ideal for people who want more than just workout videos to follow along with.

Pricing is by session rather than by month, so you only pay when you use the service. Sessions never expire, so you can use them whenever you want. Pricing starts at $29 per session — though some trainers cost more than $100 per session — so this is a pricier option than typical online workout programs.

  • Quiz matches you to best trainers
  • Virtual and in-person sessions offered
  • 4 session plan: Standard session rate (starting at $29)
  • 12 session plan: 5% discount
  • 24 session plan: 10% discount

Let’s jump right in!

At Home Warm-ups and stretching routines

A LEGO and his dog

No matter which at-home workout you pick, I want you to start with one important thing:

I cover why you should always warm up in an article found right here. It doesn’t have to be much, though. Give it about five minutes to get your muscles active and your heart rate up, and practice some easier variations of the movements you are about to do in your workout routine.

For example, if your workout includes squats and push-ups, you could do a couple of minutes of generalized movement to get the blood pumping, like marching in place, arm and leg swings, etc., and then follow that up with some assisted squats and countertop push-ups.

This will help you do exercises properly and help prevent injury.

Here is NF Senior Coach Staci (you might know her incredible story ) showing you many beginner options you can use to warm up as well:

If you’re curious, here’s my personal (advanced) warm-up:

Advanced Warm-up Routine:

  • Jump rope: 2-3 minutes
  • Jumping jacks: 25 reps
  • Bodyweight squats: 20 reps
  • Lunges: 5 reps each leg.
  • Hip extensions: 10 reps each side
  • Hip rotations: 5 each leg
  • Forward leg swings: 10 each leg
  • Side leg swings: 10 each leg
  • Push-ups: 10-20 reps
  • Spider-man steps: 10 reps

Our goal isn’t to tire you out, instead we want to warm you up.

That’s step one.

Completing your chosen at-home workout would be step two.

Below, you’ll find 10 sequences you can follow along with!

Home Workout #1: Beginner Bodyweight

This at-home routine, as we lay out in our Beginner Bodyweight Workout article, is as follows:

2 circuits of:

  • 10 Assisted Bodyweight Squats.
  • 10 Elevated or Knee Push-ups.
  • 10 Dumbbell rows (use a milk jug or other weight).
  • 15-30 Second Knee Planks
  • 10 Bodyweight Good Mornings
  • 20 Walking Jacks

We also turned it into a fun infographic with superheroes, because that’s how we roll:

homework workout app

The above is what we call “ circuit training ,” with the objective being to run through the workout sequence once, and then again.

Note: Not a milk drinker?

If you don’t have milk in the house for the rows, find something of roughly the same weight with a good handle.

Also, if you want to download this Beginner Bodyweight Workout as a worksheet, you can do so when you sign up in the box below:

  • Complete this workout at home, no equipment required
  • Avoid the common mistakes everybody makes when doing bodyweight exercises
  • Learn how to finally get your first pull-up

It’ll help you track your progress as you begin your training.

Our original bodyweight workout from 2009 is a great step up from the beginner bodyweight workout when you’re ready for more of a challenge. It has roughly the same structure but with some more challenging variations of the exercises.

3 circuits of:

  • Bodyweight squats : 20 reps
  • Push-ups : 10 reps
  • Walking lunges: 10 each leg
  • Dumbbell rows (using a gallon milk jug or another weight): 10 each arm.
  • Plank : 15 seconds
  • Jumping Jacks : 30 reps

This infographic will show you the 6 exercises needed to complete our Beginner Bodyweight Workout.

You can progress the workout by adding a 4th round, increasing the reps of any individual exercise, or making an exercise harder by doing a more challenging variation (for example, decline push-ups instead of regular push-ups).

If the two at-home workouts above are too easy for you, move on to our Advanced Bodyweight Workout .

The Advanced Bodyweight Workout:

  • One-legged squats – 10 each side [warning: super-difficult, only attempt if you’re in good enough shape]
  • Walking lunges: 20 reps (10 each leg)
  • Jump step-ups: 20 reps (10 each leg)
  • Pull-ups: 10 reps [or inverted bodyweight rows ]
  • Dips (between bar stools): 10 reps
  • Chin-ups: 10 reps [or inverted bodyweight rows with underhand grip]
  • Push-ups: 10 reps
  • Plank: 30 seconds

Not familiar with these moves? Check out the 21 Best Advanced Bodyweight Exercises for a full breakdown.

I warn you, the above sequence will hurt… in a good way. You should be proud if you can get through this three times.

Then you can do our Star Wars Workout !

It’s designed to be done in a very small space, like your home’s hallway…or an escape pod.

The “Padawan” Level of this workout is:

  • 30-second knee or feet front plank (3 Sets)
  • 10 assisted squats or squats (3 Sets)
  • 10 doorway rows (3 Sets)
  • A 60-second Farmer-carry (Farmer’s Walk) dumbbells (or milk jugs) (2 sets)
  • March in place for 3 minutes of intervals (6 sets of 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off)
  • 8 elevated or knee push-ups (4 sets)
  • 60-second Doorway Leans (2 sets)

Have you ever wanted to try parkour but always felt intimidated or worried you would hurt yourself? Well, have no fear—we have just the workout for you.

Like any other type of training, parkour can and SHOULD be progressed slowly over time.

Starting off with advanced jumps and tricks if you don’t yet know how to land safely, or how to absorb impact into a roll is just setting yourself up for disaster.

Is there anyway to work out in this hotel room?

Sometimes, you just plain find yourself stuck in a hotel room. Maybe you can find the hotel gym, but I bet it’s terrible! It probably has 2 machines, a broken treadmill, and no free weights.

Instead, how about a 20-minute workout you can do in the room itself?! Utilize the furniture to its full potential.

Hotel Workout Level 1:

  • Incline push-ups : 15 reps (feet on floor, hands on edge of bed or desk)
  • One-arm luggage rows : 10 reps (each arm, use your suitcase as your weight)
  • Reverse crunches : 10 reps

Hotel Workout Level 2:

  • Overhead Squats : 25 reps
  • Push-Ups : 20 reps
  • Inverted Rows using the desk in your hotel room: 10 reps
  • Reverse Crunches : 15 reps

Set the alarm clock to 15 minutes from now and see how many circuits you can do!

Check out our full post on hotel circuits if you want Level 3 !

Little Cute Birds in a row

The Angry Birds Workout is designed to be done when you have 5 or 10 minutes to kill.

Sort of like playing Angry Birds…

Here’s how The Angry Birds Workout Plan works: it’s deceptively simple – only four major movements.

  • Bodyweight squats
  • Pull-ups (or inverted rows )

If you don’t have time to run through the whole sequence, no problem!

Depending on how much time you have during the day, you can do your whole workout at once, or break up your training into four different sessions throughout the day (with each session being ONE of the exercises).

Here’s a sample day for your No-Equipment Workout:

  • Wake up, do 40 jumping jacks to warm up, and then do bodyweight squats.
  • At lunch, you grab your suitcase (if you’re at work, milk jug if you’re at home) and do inverted rows.
  • After work, you do 20 arm circles in each direction and then do your push-ups.
  • After dinner, you do your planks while watching TV.

You could even split it up over two days if needed, but the goal would be to do the whole sequence at once.

The main Angry Birds Workout article describes in detail Levels 1-6, but here’s Level 3 for you:

  • Bodyweight squats : 50 reps
  • Push-ups : 50 reps
  • Pull-ups : 10 reps
  • Planks : 3-minute hold

Once you’ve done the complete routine, you have my permission to whip out your phone and play the actual game!

A LEGO Wizard

You don’t have to head to the gym to do High-Intensity Interval Training . You can do a complete routine right in your own home!

HIIT is just following a specific regimen where you vary your speeds and intensity throughout a shorter run, swim, bike, or row.

Unless you have a giant backyard, running at home might be tough.

But you know what doesn’t require a lot of room?

To complete a burpee:

  • Start standing up, then squat down and kick your legs out.
  • Do a push-up , bring your legs back in, and explode up into a jump.
  • For a HIIT workout, try to do 20 repetitions, then rest for two minutes.
  • Repeat until you hate yourself.

Tip: Having trouble reaching all the way to the floor? Elevate your hands on a steady surface, like the edge of a sturdy bench. You won’t have to reach as low in your squat, and you may be able to control your push-ups better!

Check out our full guide on How to Start Interval Training for some more ideas on HIIT workouts.

Lego minifigures standing in rows. In first row - Batman, The Jo

We love the Caped Crusader here at Nerd Fitness, so naturally we have The Batman Bodyweight Workout for you to try!

Bonus points if you somehow do this no-equipment workout in a cave, as that’s how Bruce Wayne would roll. [1]

This workout is separated into two days for you.

Here’s a video for the first day:

Batman No-Equipment Workout Day 1:

  • Rolling squat tuck-up jumps: 5 reps
  • Side-to-side push-ups: 5 reps
  • Modified headstand push-ups: 5 reps
  • Jump pull-up with tuck / Pull-up with Tuck-up: 5 reps
  • Handstands against wall: 8 seconds

Here’s a video for the second day:

Batman No-Equipment Workout Day 2:

  • ‘180 Degree’ jump turns: 5 reps
  • Tuck front lever hold: 8 seconds
  • Tuck back lever hold: 8 seconds
  • Low frog hold: 8 seconds

This is a relatively advanced workout already, but if you want to progress to the next level, check out the main Batman Bodyweight Workout for tips on how to do just that.

At Nerd Fitness we encourage everyone to get to their first pull-up!

The PLP is a progressive program in which you complete one additional rep of three exercises – Pull-Ups , Lunges, and Push-Ups – every day, for two months.

NOTE: This is NOT a beginner program, and should not be attempted unless you have been training consistently and can do multiple repetitions of pull-ups and push-ups with great form.

Like this perfect push-up:

And this perfect pull-up:

Here’s how the PLP Progression works:

  • Pull-ups: 10 reps
  • Lunges: 10 reps (each leg)
  • Pull-ups: 11 reps
  • Push-ups: 11 reps
  • Lunges: 11 reps (each leg)
  • Pull-ups: 12 reps
  • Push-ups: 12 reps
  • Lunges: 12 reps (each leg)

How long do you keep doing this?

As originally envisioned by Chad Waterbury, the PLP Workout lasts 60 days. [3]

Yeah…by the end of it, you’ll be doing more than 50 pull-ups.

There are two versions:

  • If you can do 10 straight pull-ups: Start day 1 with 10 reps of each.
  • If you cannot do 10 straight pull-ups: Start day 1 with 1 rep of each.

Complete your required reps each day in as many sets as you need, whenever you need to. The goal is to do it in as few sets as possible, but enough to complete each rep with proper form.

We’d like to throw our hat in the ring and introduce a third (dare we say, better?) version of this workout.

The Nerd Fitness PLP Workout

Here’s the thing, for most people pull-ups will be much harder than push-ups, which will be much harder than lunges.

Also, you may need more rest time in between workouts than continually adding reps and working out every day.

Here’s our updated version of this program:

  • 20 lunges (each leg)
  • 15 push-ups
  • 10 pull-ups

Perform the workout 3 times per week, with a rest day in between.

Each successive week, add 5 reps to the lunges, 3 reps to the push-ups, and 1 rep to the pull-ups. So your week 2 would be 25 lunges, 18 push-ups, and 11 pull-ups. Week 3 would be 30 lunges, 21 push-ups, and 12 pull-ups, etc.

Rinse and repeat until you complete 8 weeks of the program!

If at any time, a movement feels way too easy, add an additional 5 reps to it and continue counting up from there.

Want to learn more? Check out my results on the PLP Workout .

Do you have a nearby playground? Why not work out there?! If you have kids, you can do it together. Or let them ignore you.

I’ll give you a Level One workout, and a Level Two. Check out The 20-Minute Playground Workout for some Level Three exercises.

Playground Workout Level One:

  • Alternating step-ups: 20 reps (10 each leg)
  • Elevated push-ups: 10 reps
  • Swing rows: 10 reps
  • Assisted lunges: 8 reps each leg
  • Bent leg reverse crunches: 10 reps

Playground Workout Level Two:

  • Bench jumps: 10 reps
  • Lower incline push-ups: 10 reps
  • Body rows: 10 reps
  • Lunges: 8 reps each leg
  • Straight leg reverse crunches: 10 reps

After you’ve gone through a complete set three times, go down the slide!

Can Home Workouts Build Muscle or Help With Weight Loss?

A LEGO penguin

Throughout our Online Coaching Program , we get two common questions for those wanting to train at home:

  • Can working out at home help me build muscle?
  • Can working out at home help me lose weight?

The answer to both of these: yep !

Let’s tackle them one by one.

#1) Can working out at home help me build muscle?

You can 100% build muscle mass at home.

Just ask our friend Jimmy here:

Jimmy before and after he did bodyweight training

Read more on how Jimmy turned into Spider-Man from home!

The trick is to follow a progressive overload strategy, as Coach Jim outlines in this video:

With progressive overload, we want to make our workouts more and more challenging, thus putting additional strain on our muscles.

So to build muscle with home workouts, focus on:

  • Increasing your repetitions.
  • Going close to failure (i.e. exercise is challenging enough you could only do 1-3 more reps)
  • Performing more difficult variations (knee push-ups to push-ups).
  • Increasing your time under tension (by going slower).

That will help you build strength and muscle from your casa.

#2) Can working out at home help me lose weight?

You can totally train at home for a successful weight loss strategy.

Again, we have a great example with one of our Online Coaching Clients , Sarah the Supermom:

This picture shows Sarah's transformation

The trick here is to couple your home workouts with adjustments to your nutrition.

We’re big believers that you can’t outrun your fork, so any successful weight loss plan will include a focus on building a healthy plate.

That will look something like this:

A plate that that contains a portion of protein, healthy carb, veggies/fruit, and unsweetened drink.

If you want some help adjusting your nutrition, I’ve got two great resources for you:

  • The Nerd Fitness Guide to Healthy Eating . This massive resource will help you slowly adjust your nutrition, without forcing you to give up the food you love (yes, you can still eat pizza here and there). No more diets, instead we’ll work on building habits together.

How to Build Your Own At-Home Workout

You can workout in a home just like this!

We just reviewed 10 workouts you can do at home (plus one you can do in a park ).

You don’t have to stick to these though!

I have two resources to help you design your own no-equipment workout:

There are a ton of ways to go start working out at home , including on your own. But many people find it easier — and more enjoyable — to follow programming developed by a trainer or company. You not only score effective programming, but also the moral support of a coach on-screen telling you to not dip out 5 reps early,

There are countless at-home workout apps available. If you're serious about getting fit, the subscription-based apps are the most worth the money. But there are a few free workout app options, namely Nike Training Club.

And when we say free, we actually mean it: None of these on our list are free just for a 7- or 14-day trial before asking you to fork over your credit card.

We've researched, tested, and sweat our way through numerous workout apps that claim to be free. While pickings are slim, below you'll find our favorite free at-home virtual workouts that let you break a sweat at no charge.

Here are the best free at-home virtual workouts:

Best overall: Nike Training Club App - See at Nike NTC offers ridiculously high-quality programing from elite trainers for most any type of workout you could want, including strength, cardio, core, HIIT, and workouts for beginners. It's shocking this app is free.

Best for yoga: 5 Minute Yoga - See at Apple App Store It's incredibly hard to find a free yoga app, but 5 Minute Yoga offers a quick daily practice to help you find some zen while working out at home.

Best for quick workouts:  7 Minute Workout - See at 7 Minute Workout The 7 Minute Workout has a limited library of 22 HIIT workuts, but they range from 7 to 32 minutes, which means you get science-backed programming on any kind of tight schedule.

Nike Training Club offers ridiculously high-quality programing from elite trainers for most any type of workout you could want, including strength, cardio, core, HIIT, and workouts for beginners. It's shocking this app is free.

Pros: Offers tons of workout variety, all taught by expert Nike trainers

Cons: Some workouts are full videos versus others which are just videos of specific individual exercises with a set and rep scheme

Previously $15 per month, Nike Training Club went free at the start of the pandemic and, it seems, is staying that way.

The app has over 185 workouts, including strength training, core workouts, cardio sessions, and yoga routines. Each workout ranges from 15 to 60 minutes, and the programs will tell you if you need any equipment upfront, so you know exactly what you're getting.

You can either cherry-pick individual classes or opt for a multi-week program, all of which are taught and programmed by elite Nike trainers. These trainers are really what make the difference — they have a unique ability to keep you engaged and motivated even through a screen, which is a hard feat for virtual workouts.

I'm used to varying my workouts daily among cardio, group fitness, yoga, and body part-specific strength training. With this app, I was able to keep up the variety in my routine with one-off workouts without it ever feeling repetitive.

One of Insider's health and fitness editors, Rachael Schultz, regularly undertakes NTC's various 6-week programs, and says the positive coaching and consistency among the program design make working out at home so much easier.

The app also offers nutrition, sleep, mindset, and recovery tips from trainers and other experts, as well.

Some of the programming is hard, but NTC does offer beginner-specific programs, too.

It's incredibly hard to find a free yoga app, but 5 Minute Yoga  offers a quick daily practice to help you find some zen while working out at home.

Pros: Yoga workouts are changed on a daily basis, low time commitment

Cons: Practices are always limited to five minutes

If you're looking to start yoga regularly, 5 Minute Yoga gets you going with a small time commitment, every day. It offers a new sequence daily, delivered via illustrated asana by asana alongside an on-screen timer counting down how long to hold each pose for (one minute each). After five poses (and five minutes), your daily practice is finished.

For a fee, you can unlock more content and longer routines. But it's near impossible to find any yoga app for free (or rather, one that doesn't require you to start paying after a short trial period), so we'll take what we can get.

What's more, if you're totally new to yoga and need help establishing a daily habit, five minutes is long enough to help you de-stress and be introduced to the practice in digestible chunks. --Rachael Schultz

The 7 Minute Workout has a limited library of 22 HIIT workouts, but they range from 7 to 32 minutes, which means you get science-backed programming on any kind of tight schedule.

Pros: Workouts range from 7 to 32 minutes, effective HIIT

Cons: Limited number of total workouts, not ideal for beginners

If you're looking to break a sweat efficiently, we love J&J's 7 Minute Workout app.

Designed by Chris Jordan, Director of Exercise Physiology at the Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute, this app has a library of 22 workouts which all vary in intensity and length (from 7 to 32 minutes). All the workouts are high-intensity interval training, which is the most efficient way to burn fat on a short workout.

The app has a "smart workout" feature that gauges your fitness level and will create workouts specifically deisgned for you, too.

We love that the app integrates with iTunes so you can play your own music while you sweat.

The downsides to this app are that instructional videos are separate from the workout, so you don't have a trainer teaching or reminding you about proper form during the workout itself. None of the moves are too complicated, but if you're new to working out, a lack of focus on form combined with high-intensity movement can be a quick recipe for injuries.

The other drawback is most people will get bored with this straightforward approach to a workout rather quickly. That being said, though, this is a good app to combine with another workout program and just turn to when you need a sub-10 minute sweaty workout.

While testing free workout apps, we came across several other services offering workouts at no cost through Instagram or Facebook Live streams or extended free trials. Here are a few of our favorites that stood out, but ultimately didn't make the cut:

CorePower Yoga : The yoga franchise maintains their class approach through their app, offering everything from foundation-building, beginner-friendly courses to more challenging asanas to routines that focus more on a fitness flow, making this a great option if you want to grow or diversify your yoga practice. This was our top choice for a yoga app when they lifted their paywall at the beginning of the pandemic, but classes are back to being free for just the first seven days for new subscribers, and then require a monthly fee.

Box + Flow : Led by fitness expert, Olivia Young, Box + Flow takes the popular boxing class formula and adds the mindfulness of yoga for a well-rounded, yet intense, workout. The NYC-based brand hosts daily streams of its workouts via Instagram Live, with Young herself leading a few of the workouts. Classes are free for the first seven days for new subscribers and then require a monthly fee.

Camp Gladiator : Participate in live streaming workouts through Camp Gladiators Facebook Live channel, or try its at-home printable routines. These are free always but the site doesn't offer a library of on-demand workouts.

Peloton : Peloton now offers a free trial of its Peloton Digital Membership for 30 days. The app features thousands of on-demand workouts including running, strength, yoga, and cycling — and you don't even need a bike to access them.

Tone It Up : Strengthen, tone, or get in some cardio with founders Karena and Katrina, as well as the app's community of trainers. Choose individual workouts or do a program to follow. It was free in the spring of 2020, but has since reverted back to a free seven-day trial for new subscribers and then a monthly fee.

The Class by Taryn Toomey : Exercise your body and engage your mind with this untraditional form of training. The workouts on The Class help you to release stress and anything weighing you down through repetitive movements accompanied by loud exhales. It's a transformative experience that everyone should try. The app currently offers a free two-week trial.

FitBody : We love the shred, tone, and sculpting programs created by trainer and social media personality Anna Victoria, but it only offers a seven-day free trial for new subscribers, and then a monthly fee.

Snap Fitness : Snap Fitness currently offers free 90-day access to FitnessOnDemand.com, where you can stream workouts from Sweat Factor by Mike Donvanik, Nora Tobin, SH1FT, and DailyBurn.

obé Fitness : Join a live workout from a daily schedule of 14 classes, or choose from its library of over 4,000 on-demand workouts including strength, Pilates, dance, HIIT, cardio boxing, and more. It only offers a seven-day free trial for new subscribers, and then a monthly fee.

Jazzercise on Demand : Jazz up your usual routine with a little dance party. These workouts combine jazz dance, yoga, Pilates, kickboxing, and HIIT. New users can sign up for a free two-week trial.

Hydrow : Join this brand's free at-home 14-day challenge, which has a mix of 20- to 30-minute rowing (if you have a machine) and mat routines  that include yoga, Pilates, and more.

Each of these apps was tested not just for their respective use case but also across a variety of categories:

Ease of use:  An intuitive app experience is vital to not only enjoy using it but also to get the most out of it. If an app is cumbersome in its navigation, or makes finding and choosing workouts difficult, then it won't promote much in the way of motivation or desire to work out.

Variety:  Though we broke down the guide into specific sections on activities like yoga or boxing, we wanted to see that the apps that fell into the other categories were diverse enough in what they offered to keep the experience fresh and engaging. This means offering more than just one or two workout styles, as well as making available a library of classes.

Effectiveness:  This category doesn't necessarily mean results from a fitness standpoint. Though that is important, there's not a way to judge that reliably or to stand behind one person's interpretation of it, so this instead means how well it's able to motivate you to workout, if it's able to push you through to the end of a session, and if it offers enough variety to allow you the chance to learn new exercises.

Entertainment value:  If you enjoy working out, you'll do it more often — plain and simple. Even free apps can offer some form of entertainment which can serve as a huge reason to revisit it (and workout) often.

✔ 1300 exercises ✔ Fully customisable workouts ✔ Super detailed progress tracker (including a heat map of muscles trained) ✔ Community aspect to compete with friends

✘ Beginners may miss the lack of workout suggestions ✘ Not specifically targeted at home workouts (you can create your own) ✘ No diet information

Quite simply, JEFIT just lets you do your thing. It doesn’t suggest a wave of workouts you don’t have any interest in, but asks for your specific goals , and pushes you to create your own awesome custom workout .

This customisation is the best part of JEFIT. An extremely detailed filter allows you to search for exercises by the exact equipment you have available , and muscle groups you want to target.

When you’ve done the same workout 1000 times, JEFIT adds a refreshing chance for you to learn and create something new while allowing you to remain firmly in control.

Smashed it.

Best workout app for: Getting started

✔ Supported by BBC ✔ Super achievable, bitesize goals ✔ Choose a celebrity as the voice coach ✔ Set your goals (e.g. lose weight, prepare for a half-marathon)

✘ No versatility – only good for running ✘ Display while running could be clearer

It can be extremely difficult to take those first few steps to establishing a new habit – especially when your goal seems impossibly far away.

One You Couch to 5K provides a quick and super simple setup which allows you to completely forget about that paralysing end goal with an irresistibly easy start .

Day 1 is a 30 minute workout, most of which you can spend walking, and only 60 seconds spent running at a time. Day 2 is a bit harder, but you did day 1 and that wasn’t too bad. Before you know it, you’re not even doing any walking any more.

Congratulations. You’ve successfully tricked yourself into doing regular exercise .

Best workout app for: Building lean muscle

4. home workout – no equipment.

Turn your bodyweight into a piece of chiseled equipment

screenshots in homeworkout app showing award, training plans coach tips

Price : Free (until July 1) (Premium: £2.79 per year)

✔ Specifically built for home workouts ✔ Simple interface ✔ Clear animations/ tutorials

✘ Not very versatile ✘ No exercise database or custom workout option ✘ Annoying Ads

Building muscle at home can be a real challenge.

The lack of equipment can lead to ineffective exercises, or extreme boredom.

After all, pushups and situps can get real old really quickly – especially if you are used to doing low rep/ high weight exercises,

When you just want a simple app that will get your blood pumping at home without any frills, customisation or sign up forms, Home Workout – No Equipment takes the crown.

Even the name leaves no room for error.

The animations are clear and well-designed and there are a variety of workouts for a variety of common goals (fat burning, abs sculpting etc.), none of which require equipment.

But for the most part you can just fire up the app, choose the muscle group you want to shred and the intensity / how much pain you want to be in tomorrow. That’s it.

And as long as you don’t cheat with the intensity, you will be in pain the next day. I guarantee it.

Even if you finally decide to try to lose that weight, any number of factors can make the challenge extremely draining.

Lose Weight in 30 Days immediately helps you overcome a number of those obstacles.

The structure and exercises are personalised to your weight and goals, right up to how much weight you want to shift in what timeframe . The workout plans and in-depth tutorials show you exactly what you need to be doing and when.

The information on diet planning is also a key aspect that many apps ignore, constantly reaffirming the need to be just as diligent with food as with exercise .

The only thing the app can’t do is make you follow it’s instructions and actually get started. It pretty much does everything else though.

Still unsure if this app works? Check out any of the 500k ratings.

✔ Comprehensive tracking and dashboard  ✔ Wealth of features ✔ Training Plans ✔ Connects to My Fitness Pal for nutrition information and meal plans

✘ None worth mentioning

It’s quite tough for a running app to set itself apart amongst the competition. Most have the functionality to track your run using GPS, or count calories.

Where Map My Run excels, however, is in the sheer amount of features and overall experience offered to the user .

In addition to the detailed dashboard tracking your progress, you can view automatically generated routes to run near you, general workout routines, or take part in the #wewill global community.

The synergy with UA’s My Fitness Pal also means all your data is connected to the best nutrition planning app available.

How We Chose the Best Free Workout Apps

We based our list of the best free workout apps on five key features that help users maintain a consistent and effective fitness routine. The best workout apps should offer fitness coaching, personalized workout plans, music to accompany workouts, classes and programs focused on strength training, and community features to help users stay motivated.

Because the apps on our list all offer free versions with access to a selection of workouts and other fitness-focused features, the best app for you largely comes down to your workout preferences and goals. Apps like Nike Training Club are great for those who want to find training programs tailored to their goals, while apps like Map My Fitness are better suited for more experienced users who want to create custom workout routines.

While it can be tempting to download one of these workout apps and jump straight into its more advanced workout classes, it’s important to start slow to avoid injury. We recommend starting with the shorter, beginner-level courses these apps offer before progressing to more advanced classes and programs.

Best Workout Apps for 2024

If you're looking for a new exercise routine or way to stay motivated when it comes to your physical activity, these are the best workout apps we've tested.

Our Experts

homework workout app

CNET’s expert staff reviews and rates dozens of new products and services each month, building on more than a quarter century of expertise.

Factors to consider

Think about where you'll mainly be using the app. Do you work out at home, at the gym, outside or a mix of all three? If you like to run outdoors, for example, you'll likely want an app that offers location tracking.

You'll also want to figure out whether the app's classes require you to have certain pieces of equipment on hand, like dumbbells or a yoga mat. Make sure you either have these items, or you have the budget to purchase them.

Think about what goals you're trying to achieve when using the app. Do you just want to get moving more often, or are there specific fitness milestones you want to hit (like running a certain speed or lifting a certain amount of weight)? Some apps let you personalize your goals or even connect with a personal trainer to help you meet them.

Free or subscription

There are fitness apps for every budget. Some are completely free or offer a free trial, and some require a monthly subscription. Your choice will ultimately depend on whether you think investing in a paid app will actually help you get closer to your goals and what you're comfortable spending. Other things to consider are if you prefer live streaming or On Demand workouts.

nike-training-club

The cost of a  gym membership can add to your expenses and feel like a waste if you aren't actually spending much time at the gym. Personally, I've always preferred the gym environment, but after the COVID-19 pandemic, I learned to adapt to at-home workouts. I noticed I was the most consistent when I downloaded the Future app, which paired me up with a coach who programmed my workouts around my goals. This was beneficial during my pregnancy and now postpartum as I ease back into a fitness routine. The  best workout apps  remove the guesswork for you and can help you figure out what to do while working with the equipment you already have on hand. And if you prefer a hybrid approach to your workouts, you can use these programs at the gym as well.

I'm aware that not every workout app is one size fits all, and it's important to be user inclusive. Conveniently, many of these apps offer free trials first. That way you can give them a fair shake and decide if you plan on committing to them. Use our list of the best workout apps as a guide at home and/or in the gym.

What is the best workout app overall?

The Nike Training Club is our pick for the best overall workout app, because it's completely free and offers a variety of classes, like HIIT, strength training, mobility and yoga, and you can even follow a program over the course of a month and decide how often you're looking to work out. Because Nike is such a big name in fitness, a lot of its workouts draw inspiration from famous athletes, like Simone Biles or Serena Williams. If you prefer a workout app that's more specific to your interests, such as yoga, there are others we recommend, as seen in the list below.

Best workout apps of 2024

  • Variety of classes to pick from
  • Nike is a trusted and familiar brand
  • Can be used at the gym or at home
  • Lacks personalization
  • If you don't own an Apple Watch, you can't keep track of fitness data
  • Programming lacks structure, which doesn't help if you have strength goals in mind

Best overall workout app

Nike training club.

When I first started working out regularly, Nike Training Club was my go-to app. It provides various workout programs such as bodyweight exercises, high-intensity interval training, cross-training, yoga, core exercises and expert health tips by Nike trainers to keep you on track.

The workouts are easy to follow because there are video demonstrations of each exercise with the allotted time you should be doing them. This keeps you from losing track during your workout and mentally prepares you for the following exercise. The app also connects to your Apple watch to provide health metrics such as your heart rate and logs your activities.

The best part of this app is that it's free and gives you access to many resources no matter if you're a beginner or more advanced.

nike-training-club

  • Personal trainer at your fingertips
  • It's customized to help you reach your goals
  • Regular check-ins with trainer without leaving home
  • Ideal for both iPhone and Android users
  • Pricey compared with other workout apps

Best workout app for personal training

The Future app is unique because it connects you to an elite personal fitness coach who checks in regularly, gives you feedback and customizes the workout for you. They take into account your fitness level, goals and even what equipment is available to you. Having used this app for over a year now, I can vouch that it's a great option if you want the feel of a personal trainer in your home. The creators of the app believe that connection is the best way to stick to your goals. That's why they set you up with a partner who can hold you accountable.

To get started on this app, you have to take a short quiz about the type of workouts you like or dislike, what type of coach you work best with and your goals. There are plenty of coaches on this app with numerous years of experience in their respective fields.

To get the most out of the experience, users are recommended to wear an Apple Watch or a compatible Android wearable, which gives detailed information to your coach so they can see your progress and edit your plan as you go. At $199 a month, Future isn't the most affordable app on the market, but compared with a standard personal training session, which can cost more than that, it's worth the price. Future often offers promotional discounts on your first month and offers a $50 credit for every friend who signs up using your guest pass for the app.

  • Peloton is a trusted and popular brand
  • Trainers are high-energy and motivational
  • First month is free to test out before committing
  • Can be streamed on your smartphone, TV, tablet or computer
  • If you want to appear on a cycling class leaderboard, you have to own a Peloton bike
  • There's a $32 difference between the all-access and Peloton digital membership if you want to upgrade

Best boutique workout app

Peloton app one.

There's no doubt that the popularity of the Peloton indoor cycling bike exploded in popularity  during the pandemic. The company's app, which is available to non-Peloton owners, gives you access to Peloton's library of on-demand workouts, from cycling, running and strength training to yoga, pilates and stretching. My husband and I use this app regularly and love that it has options to do shorter or longer workouts, as well as beginner and advanced classes.

The difference between the all-access membership available to Peloton owners and the app is that the former allows multiple member profiles, access to exclusive classes and better access to the Leadership board (where you can compete against other users). If you opt for the all-access membership, it costs $24 a month and can be used whether you own the bike, treadmill or rower. Peloton also recently updated its search function  so it's easier than ever to find your favorite artist, class title and genre. If you're not a fully converted Peloton junkie, the Peloton app One is a good stepping stone to see what the hype is about and whether you enjoy the classes.

The price doesn't hurt either. The first month is usually a free trial and then it's $13 a month with access to thousands of on-demand and live classes via your smartphone, tablet, TV or web browser.

Best workout app for running

If you're looking for an app that tracks your running mileage, Strava is your best bet. As an avid runner who's tried various running apps throughout the years, the Strava app remains my favorite. Although I mainly use it for running, it can interchangeably be used for cycling and other workouts as well. The app is GPS powered and turns any Apple or Android phone into a detailed performance monitor. It connects to heart rate monitors and various popular GPS devices, such as an Apple Watch, Garmin, Fitbit or a Suunto watch.

It also connects you to friends on the app who can cheer you on or comment on your posts that get uploaded to your Strava feed after your workout. If you prefer to keep your data and running routes private, you can also make those changes through your settings via the app. One of the newer safety features on the Strava app is called the Beacon, which lets you share your location in real time with an emergency contact.

I've found the free version of the app to be sufficient for my purposes, but you can upgrade it to receive more detailed data and other perks, such as building your own routes, accessing new routes in your area and more. The paid version of the app will run you $12 a month (or $80 a year). The good news is Strava offers a free 30-day trial to users who want to try out their upgraded features before committing.

  • Various workouts to pick from that are women-friendly
  • Online community is active and connects you to women around the world
  • Inexpensive compared to other fitness apps
  • Warm-ups are optional, which can be an injury risk
  • Doesn't correct form or exercise technique
  • Meal plan isn't customized to your needs

Best workout app for women

This app was co-founded by popular Australian personal trainer Kayla Itsines. It was created with women in mind, and at the time it served as a platform to access Itsines' HIIT workout plans, but it has since evolved. In 2021, Sweat was acquired by iFit (an interactive global health and fitness technology company), giving the app more exposure via its existing members and internationally.

Now you have access to various workout programs that can be done at home or in the gym, such as yoga, strength and pilates, all taught by different female personal trainers. The app also offers meal plan options if you're looking for healthy recipe ideas.

This app costs $20 a month but often offers introductory deals. This is a good way to determine if the workouts on the app are the right fit for you and your goals.

  • Community is well-connected, and you can ask your coach questions through the app
  • Free week offered upon downloading app

  • Available only to Apple users
  • It's more strength-training focused, so it isn't for a cardio junkie

Best workout app for strength training

If you're worried about how to maintain your gains outside of the gym, then you'll love the Ladder app. Ladder is specifically designed for strength training and connects you to many strength coaches who specialize in various fields. To find the coach that's the best fit for you, you'll have to answer questions such as your preferred training style, what your goals are, how often you'd want to workout and the type of equipment available to you. Ladder takes the guesswork out of planning your workout because the coach for your designated program will provide a weekly workout plan that you receive Sunday nights to prepare you for the week ahead.

Currently, the app works only with Apple mobile or iPad devices and can be used with an Apple Watch or cast to a TV screen using Apple AirPlay or Screen Mirroring. However, the developers are working on creating an Android app.

When I tried out this app, I signed up for a kettlebell class called Body & Bell, and what's great is you get video demonstrations for the different exercises you'll be doing. The videos also tell you the type of weight you should be using (light, medium, heavy) and the length of time of the exercise.

You can also connect with your coach via the chat in the app if you ever have questions on your training or want to chat with other members on your team. Ladder offers a free seven-day trial, and afterward you can pick from a Pro plan for $30 a month or the Pro Plan-Annual which is an upfront fee of $179 for the year and offers unlimited access to the app.

  • Various types of yoga classes
  • Free trial for two weeks before committing
  • You can save and download workouts to revisit later
  • Not ideal if you're looking to gain muscle
  • Pricey app for the year, unless all you're doing is yoga
  • No live classes, which means you can't interact with your favorite instructor

Best workout app for yoga

If yoga is more your speed, the Alo Moves app is a favorite among yogis. The Alo Moves app was created by the athleisure line Alo, and it connects you to various types of workouts beyond yoga, such as pilates, barre, meditation and more. The yoga option on the app lets you pick from various practices, including hatha, ashtanga, vinyasa, restorative and even prenatal yoga. You can customize your yoga practice also based on your experience level, your goals and how long you'd like your sessions to be.

This app is accessible only to Apple users and connects you to world-class instructors and new classes every week. If you're trying to achieve a specific skill, such as a handstand or other yoga poses, the app also has a series to help you improve those positions.

If you're ready to dive into improving your flexibility or mastering crow's pose, the Alo Moves app is currently offering a free trial for 14 days. If you choose to commit, it's $13 a month or $130 for the year.

Best workout app if you don't like to work out

Working out requires being consistent and motivated and sometimes that's hard to come by. The FitOn app takes away the pressure of having to commit to any type of exercise program by offering a variety of live and on demand classes. This is the ideal workout app if you don't like working out . It's free for the basic membership but will cost you $35 a month for six-months or $39.99 for a year long FitOn Pro subscription. You can take anything ranging from everything from yoga, dance, Pilates, HIIT, Barre and more. Additionally, you can receive nutrition guidance and expert tips and access to your music through Spotify or Apple music with the Pro subscription.

This app is available for iOS and Android. Some positive reviews users have shared are that the app finally got them to be more active, while another says it gave them the freedom to get in shape on their own time frame. Overall most users seem to enjoy the variety and length of the workouts. Some complaints users had were with the app interface itself sometimes being glitchy, issues connecting some smart watches and it's inaccurate step counting.

Best Workout Apps for 2024, Compared

How we test the best workout apps

In addition to our personal experience and expertise, here are the main factors we used to evaluate each workout app.

  • Ease of use: We considered how user-friendly each app was, including whether it had easy-to-follow classes and a straightforward menu.
  • Versatility: We looked at the variety of classes offered within the app to keep your exercise routine interesting. We determined whether the app is helpful for a range of workout types or would be best suited to specific fitness goals.
  • Price: Workout apps vary in price, but we made sure we selected a mix of cheaper and pricier apps to fit a range of budgets.
  • Programs: We looked at the programs to make sure there's something for beginners, intermediate and more experienced users. We also considered whether the classes are live, on-demand or both and whether there's any personalization or customization.
  • Extra features: Some workout apps offer features like personal coaching, health tracking and smartwatch compatibility. We tested these features and noted which ones stood out or were most unique.

Factors to consider when choosing a workout app

Finding your favorite workout app may require a bit of trial and error since you'll want to see if you're looking for a personalized experience or are comfortable with a cookie cutter plan.

Where will you be using the app? Think about where you'll mainly be using the app. Do you work out at home, at the gym, outside or a mix of all three? If you like to run outdoors, for example, you'd likely want an app that offers location tracking. Similarly, when looking into a specific app, figure out whether its classes require you to have certain equipment on-hand, like dumbbells or a yoga mat.

Your goals: You should also think about your goals for using the app. Do you just want to get moving more often, or are there specific fitness goals (like running a certain speed or lifting a certain weight) that you want to achieve? Some apps allow you to personalize your goals or even connect with a personal trainer to help you meet them.

Budget: Lastly, know that there are workout apps for every budget -- including free. Some require a monthly subscription to access, so take advantage of the free trials to determine if it's worth the cost to you.

The adaptive cyclist clamps her prosthetic arm onto the handlebar.

Announcer : On your marks.

The swimmers crouch on their starting blocks.

[SLOW HEARTBEATS FADE]

Announcer : Set.

The runners take position at their starting blocks. The athletes crouch in tense anticipation.

Announcer : Stage two. Time advantage: team white.

Now, in the velodrome, two cyclists race.

Adaptive cyclist : I was never told, “You can’t do this, you can’t do that.”

Crouched over their handlebars, they speed around the velodrome and lean into a turn.

Adaptive cyclist : I was just doing sport like everyone else.

Announcer : Four hundred meters.

As they round a curve, the nondisabled cyclist in black speeds up.

[STARTING TONE]

The swimmers dive into a long-course pool.

The adaptive swimmer pulls ahead as they approach the wall.

Announcer : Stage four. Time advantage: team black.

Wheelchair racer : When I am racing I feel free, I feel powerful.

The female nondisabled runner in black and the wheelchair racer in white speed down the track.

Wheelchair racer : The track makes everyone equal.

The wheelchair racer gains on the female nondisabled runner.

Lyrics : All you children gather ‘round. All you children gather ‘round.

The female nondisabled runner stares intensely and pumps her arms. Her long braids whip behind her. The wheelchair racer’s arms move in circular motions, propelling her down the track.

Lyrics : We will dance and we will whirl. We will dance to our own song. We will spin to our own world.

They approach the finish line together. Cut to black.

Now, the male nondisabled runner and the adaptive runner dap hands.

Adaptive runner : Oh, my god.

The swimmers embrace in the water.

Male nondisabled runner : We lined up at the same line, and we finish at the same line.

The female nondisabled runner and wheelchair racer pant after their race. The nondisabled cyclist fist-bumps the adaptive cyclist’s prosthetic hand.

A college closes every week. How to know if yours is in danger of shutting down.

As if finding a suitable , affordable college isn’t hard enough, students must also find one that isn’t likely to close on them, experts say.

Every week, on average, a college or university closes , according to an analysis by the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association. That’s up from about two a month last year and could worsen this fall as college enrollment dwindles further, experts said.

When schools close, fewer than half of the students transfer to another school, the executive officers association said. Of those who do, less than half graduate, it said. The others who reenrolled and didn’t finish, just added to their student debt and “added to the population of students who have some college but no credential,” the association said.

That means choosing a school that’s the right fit for you and affordable isn’t enough. You also need to research the school’s financials to ensure its solvency, said Jack Wallace, director of governmental and lender relations at Yrefy, a private student-loan company.

“You’ve got to look at the school’s financials, liquidity and endowments,” he said, noting the work is like researching a company to decide whether to buy its stock.

Why are so many schools closing?

Many small private schools, both for-profit and nonprofit, depend on tuition to operate. With enrollments trending lower for more than a decade, smaller schools with little to no endowments are having trouble staying afloat , experts said.

Undergraduate enrollment in 2023 was 15% below peak levels from fall 2010, “with no meaningful growth expectation on the horizon,” Fitch Ratings said . “Eroding consumer sentiment on the affordability of a higher education degree and unfavorable longer-term demographic trends for high school graduate totals together could translate into demand pressure well into the next decade for the sector.”

New federal rules are also squeezing budgets, Fitch said. Overtime pay is required for salaried employees earning less than about $55,000 a year, up from the $35,568 threshold. “For colleges already managing extremely tight or deficit operations, any additional mandated costs will compound budgetary stress,” Fitch said.

And “what may be a final nail in the coffin is the FAFSA debacle,” said Shannon Vasconcelos, financial aid consultant at Bright Horizons College Coach. “There’s a decrease in the number (of FAFSAs) submitted, and that leads to enrollment decreases.”

The number of high school seniors who submitted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid through June had dropped 11.6% from a year ago, according to National College Attainment Network.

What red flags should students look for in a school?

It’s not a perfect science, Vasconcelos said, but some steps students and families can follow to get a sense of how well capitalized a school is include:

  • ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer allows you to search the financials of any nonprofit organization, including schools. “Look at the net income over several years and see if it consistently has huge profits each year, whether it’s positive net income or negative, or in a downward trend,” Vasconcelos said. “If it’s losing money or if net income’s trending down, that can be a real red flag the finances are not working well at this college, and you might want to give it a little extra thought about enrolling.”
  • Search the school on the internet “and throw in words like 'finances' and 'layoffs' to see if there’s any news about the school’s financial issues,” she said. “A closure usually doesn’t happen totally out of the blue . Usually, you’ll see some news about layoffs and budget cuts for a number of years before closure happens.”
  • Take a tour and ask yourself, “How are the physical state of buildings?” she said. “Are there improvements or decrepit buildings? Are there signs of innovations or status quo? Are they adding new programs or not? These can give you an idea of whether they have money to invest in new things.”
  • Common Data Set is standardized data every school collects and publishes. “It will be on the school’s website but sometimes it’s buried,” Vasconcelos said. “So, you may want to Google the college’s name and ‘common data sets’ to find it. It will have numerous years of data, and it’s in a consistent format from school to school so it’s easy to compare.”

Within the common data set, she said, the two biggest things to examine are:

Enrollment data in Section B. “If enrollment’s consistently declining, the school could be struggling,” she said. “It can be a strategy to cut back enrollment to keep afloat, but you need to consider if it’s a bad sign.”

Amount of institution non-need-based scholarships and grants in Section H2A, line O. “This sounds counterintuitive, but these are recruitment scholarships. If these are increasing, it could be seen as a measure of desperation,” Vasconcelos said. “They could be trying to draw in more students that pay tuition.”

Education costs: Can I afford to send my children to college? This question helped me see other options.

Don't go broke: How to pay for college without going broke? Let us count the ways

Taking these steps doesn’t guarantee your school won’t close, but they can minimize your risk of it happening and your dropping out as a result.

“In the best situations, colleges that close have prepared and worked out mergers with other colleges or transfer agreements with other colleges they’ve partnered with so students can get automatic admission as a transfer student,” Vasconcelos said. “They’ll try to ease the path for existing students, but it’s always major disruption and not every student will take that. The new school may be far away, social adjustment may be hard, credits may not transfer. It can be major disruption, and the school may not be a right fit anymore.”

Simple, clean. Unique and intriguing bot presets that cover more than you can think of and so many you didn’t know you needed Ai is a baby right now and this is a very enjoyable, productive, entertaining, and expansive playground to explore this new tech while contributing to the machine learning process Extra points for the clear and consistent (without being tedious) reminders that’s this is a new tool and is in no way an adequate substitute for an expert/professional human (which some people are in urgent need of 🤖) Not sure what sparked this, but thanks for apparently inspiring me enough to not only rave on and on here, but to also open a new app more than twice 🤘🏼

Don’t misunderstand, I DO love this app

I gave it a 4 because theres more to be done. However, Im a teacher and I loooove this app! But what kinda throws me for a loop is that sometimes it reminds me its just an ai assistant and cant do this or that. But if I ask the question again the next day, it works. And sometimes it gives false information. It solved a math problem wrong and when i replied to the chat and said thats incorrect, it apologized to me and gave me the correct answer. Another situation was when i asked it to create a rubric for me, sometimes it creates the rubric and will draw the boxes and everything, and sometimes it doesnt. But if i keep asking it to create the rubric, over and over, eventually it will make all the boxes. After three tries it typically does. But this uses up my queries. Im a paid member so i have a lot but still. So, the ai bot will mess u up and sometimes you may need to go fact check the stuff or repeat stuff all in all…that does kinda defeat the purpose of using it. But I believe in the functionality still. I have hope that these are glitches that will be worked out because it is indeed technology and not 100 percent. There’s probably a lot of kinks that have to constantly be addressed, so its a work in progress. It has helped me as a teacher tremendously! I have more good experiences than bad ones. I would love to be able to use it as a side bar on my phone and tablet the way I can on my PC. That would be awesomeness!

Really cool / Subscription issues

I really enjoyed using Sider when it was working. However, after subscribing to Basic for 2 months without any issues, suddenly on the 3rd month my payment went through but my Sider account got downgraded to the “free” tier, so I didn’t have access to the all the models and features I was supposed to. I went back and forth with Sider support 3 times now, and the only explanation they gave was “we support Apple Pay, but don’t have permission to deal with Apple’s payments”. I can’t figure out what that means and after trying to clarify, they gave me the same answer but no suggested solution. I think there’s probably a language barrier with support, etc. So I just cancelled because I don’t know that I can trust it to work. But it’s a cool product.

Jersey Strong shutting down Red Bank gym after 20 years

One-minute read.

RED BANK - A landmark on West Front Street for more than 20 years, Jersey Strong will close on Aug. 31, the fitness company wrote in a note to members.

"It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of the closure of our Red Bank facility effective August 31, 2024," Stephen S. Roma, owner and CEO, wrote in a note posted on the club's door on Monday. "This has been a very difficult decision and one that we have tried to avoid.

"However, the circumstances since the pandemic have made it impossible for us to continue to operate this location effectively."

Roma said membership agreements and training services will be transferred to Jersey Strong Tinton Falls, which is located on Shrewsbury Avenue and is open 24 hours a day.

Red Bank news: What should developer build next to the train station? Here is what neighbors want.

"We know this is terribly short notice and apologize for this tremendously," Roma said. "We adore our Jersey Strong Red Bank members and are deeply grateful for the loyalty and support you have shown us over the past 20+ years."

The chain has 10 locations remaining overall, six of which are in Monmouth County.
