In total, 117 Nobel laureates are affiliated with the University of Cambridge , and Cambridge-linked mathematicians have won 11 Fields medals. Notable alumni include actors, athletes, politicians, royals and cultural figures, including biologist Charles Darwin, broadcaster David Attenborough, conservationist Jane Goodall and actress Olivia Colman.

Like Oxford, the University of Cambridge is fundamentally collegiate and is also one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities. The town is just an hour from London.

The university is home to more than 19,000 students and 9,000 staff. There are 31 colleges, some of which date back to the 13th century, and more than 100 academic departments.

Cambridge is particularly renowned for excellence in mathematics and has educated some of the most famous British scientists.

Undergraduates are taught via lectures and supervisions – intimate tutorials with only a couple of other students at most. The workload is heavy but terms are shorter than at many other UK universities.

Cambridge libraries are home to extensive collections of medieval manuscripts, and the university museums display collections of archaeological artefacts and zoological specimens.

Oxbridge and the Ivy League: tips for applications

1. University of Oxford

More than 30 world leaders, 27 British prime ministers, 50 Nobelists and 120 Olympic medallists were educated at Oxford. Stephen Hawking, Hugh Grant and Indira Gandhi are some of its famous graduates.

Undergraduates and postgraduates belong to one of its 44 colleges and often live in the college building or college-owned accommodation.

One of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities, the University of Oxford attracts top scholars and students. Entry standards are high and admission is competitive; on average, the institution receives five applications for each available place.

Social life and recreational activities – such as rowing, cultural events and societies – also revolve around the college. Undergraduates are taught almost exclusively by tutors in their college, while postgraduate students are primarily served academically by a centralised faculty.

There are more than 100 libraries at Oxford, the most famous of which is the Bodleian, built in 1602. The city also has a number of museums, including the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, which houses the remains of a dodo, and the Museum of the History of Science, which displays a blackboard used by Albert Einstein.

32 of Malaysia’s brightest have been awarded the prestigious Chevening scholarship to pursue their postgraduate studies in the UK for the 2024/25 academic year.

Acting British High Commissioner to Malaysia David Wallace with 32 Chevening scholarship recipients

In addition to the existing number of Chevening scholarship awards, the United Kingdom (UK) government has also now launched a Chevening ASEAN Scholarship Programme. Every ASEAN member country and Timor-Leste will receive one additional Chevening scholarship award for the 2025/26 academic year.

David Wallace, Acting British High Commissioner to Malaysia, hosted a pre-departure briefing and reception for the scholars this evening. He said:

The Chevening Scholarship programme is a testament to the UK government’s commitment to nurturing Malaysia’s leaders of tomorrow. It provides an opportunity to experience a world-class education in the UK as well as gaining invaluable exposure and experiences along the way. ASEAN is an important partner to the UK. In 2022, the UK became a Dialogue Partner to ASEAN, the first new dialogue partner in 25 years. The Chevening ASEAN Scholarship Programme will enable more scholars from South East Asia (including Malaysia) to study in the UK. It also augurs well with Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025.

The Chevening award is the UK Government’s global scholarship programme that is funded and administered by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). This is complemented by generous sponsorships from Malaysian corporate partners namely CIMB Foundation, Yayasan Khazanah, PETRONAS and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation. British universities also provide additional funding in support of the Chevening programme.

Chevening partners in Malaysia

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO, Founder and Chairman of the Sunway Group said:

It has been a pleasure and privilege for the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation to have been the sponsor of a Chevening Scholarship since 2018. Each year I am thrilled by the quality of the applicants, and especially that of the candidates for our Scholarship; and we are delighted to be able to provide the opportunity over the years to well-deserving Malaysians to enhance their professional and leadership skills at a UK university and partake of the many interesting activities that are provided by the Chevening Secretariat in London.

Ahmad Shahriman Mohd Shariff, Chief Executive Officer of CIMB Foundation said:

CIMB Foundation is pleased to continue our collaboration with the UK for the Chevening Scholarship programme, a platform which provides life-changing opportunities for exceptional individuals to transform their lives through the power of education and networking. Aligned with our core impact area of Education, we firmly believe that the Chevening Scholarship plays an instrumental role in shaping the next generation of Malaysian leaders. The scholarship provides the recipients an edge through wide exposure and knowledge transfer, enhancing their value to the nation in returning to create positive and lasting change in their respective areas of specialisation.

Intan Zalila, Chief Programme Officer of Yayasan Khazanah said:

Our partnership with Chevening allows us to connect with a diverse pool of talented individuals who are poised to make significant contributions to society. We look forward to the continued success of our partnership with Chevening, as we work together to empower future leaders and make a lasting impact!

Ruslan Islahudin, Vice President & Group Chief Human Resource Officer of PETRONAS said:

Our alliance with the Chevening Scholarship reflects our commitment to empowering future leaders who are not only equipped with a world-class education but are also dedicated to driving sustainable solutions to global challenges in navigating a just energy transition. We are optimistic that these scholars will significantly contribute to the aspiration of shaping a more sustainable future by bringing innovative ideas and responsible business practices to the forefront here in Malaysia.

The Malaysian scholars

The current batch of scholars will be heading to the UK as early as September this year to pursue a wide range of postgraduate programmes at top UK universities, including subjects such as Early Years Education, Creative Writing Poetry, Global Health Policy, Cyber Defence and Information Assurance as well as Competition Law.

Scholar Muhammad Farhan Shahmi bin Abdullah who will be attending University of Cambridge to study Sociology (The Sociology of Media and Culture) said:

Misinformation and hate speech are ever-evolving threats in Malaysia, and preparing our youth to tackle them is crucial. I am driven to study Sociology at Cambridge to enrich myself with knowledge and skills in building effective, yet inclusive solutions to this conundrum. Certainly, interventions in sociology consider broader factors like culture and social dynamics, thus viewing social issues like misinformation and hate speech through a holistic lens. With the knowledge gained and network fostered from the Chevening experience, I aim to ultimately advocate for media literacy’s inclusion in the national school curriculum, making it a fundamental skill for all Malaysians.

Lydia Hong Wen Xin who will be attending Imperial College London to study Climate Change, Management and Finance said:

The field of climate change and finance is rapidly evolving, driven by urgent global demands to address climate risks and transition to sustainable energy systems. In Malaysia, recent initiatives like the target to achieve a 70% renewable energy mix by 2050 exemplify this momentum. Studying in the UK, with its environmental stewardship and cutting-edge research, offers an ideal platform to gain the expertise needed to contribute effectively to this global challenge. The holistic approach provided by my program enables me to communicate effectively across both business and scientific contexts.

Rajwin Kanagarajah who will be attending the University of Cambridge to study Population Health Sciences said:

One of the most pressing challenges in population health in Malaysia today is the growing burden of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease driven by lifestyle changes and an ageing population. This not only strains healthcare resources but also widens health disparities. Through this Chevening scholarship, I aim to gain expertise in public health policy, health economics and digital health solutions. Upon my return, I hope to contribute to Malaysia’s healthcare transformation by driving innovative, data-driven approaches in reducing disease burden, improving access to care and closing healthcare gaps on a national scale.

Syamim S. who will be attending the University of Kent to study Autism Studies said:

As an autistic person, equal opportunities are core to my Chevening journey. They allow persons with disabilities like myself equitable access to education. Personally, experiencing how such legislations may protect disabled persons is its own learning curve—one that I look forward to exploring further in the UK and adapting back home. I hope to build capacity within myself and my community through this academic and existential journey, moving Malaysia towards a better state of autistic and disability rights, benefiting everyone.

Malaysia is the second largest recipient of Chevening awards in ASEAN and there are already over 2,000 members of the Chevening alumni in Malaysia.

The UK government has recently reiterated that the UK welcomes international students. Malaysians who wish to get a scholarship to pursue a post-graduate degree in the UK can apply now until applications close on 5 November 2024. More information is available on www.chevening.org/malaysia .

Plans for two years of U.K. graduate study include work on disabilities and homelessness, theoretical computer science, and histories of enslavement

Ronald “Trey” Sullivan III was on an Amtrak train with his friends, headed for the Harvard-Yale football game in November, when he received the call telling him that he’d won a 2024 Marshall Scholarship.

“It’s such a one-in-a-million chance,” Sullivan said. “Everyone’s super qualified so you never know what’s going to happen. I feel really lucky and really honored to have received this scholarship.”

Simar Bajaj was showering when the call arrived but quickly discovered the news after he noticed the missed call and voicemail. He was visiting his hometown of Fremont, California, and was able to replay the message for his parents.

“It was really great being back home with my family and hearing those words, ‘Congratulations! You’re a 2024 Marshall Scholar,’” Bajaj recalled.

Six Harvard College students or recent graduates — Sullivan, Bajaj, Richard Allen, Alexander Dyer, Sarosh Nagar, and Eleanor Wikstrom — were among the 51 students nationwide named to the Marshall Class of 2024. The recipients will head to the U.K. next year for two years of graduate studies at the college or university of their choice.

Allen, a 2022 graduate who concentrated in physics and mathematics, with a secondary in computer science, is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in theoretical physics at MIT while serving as a resident tutor in Cabot House. A native of Clarksville, Virginia, Allen plans to pursue a master’s degree in theoretical computer science at the University of Oxford before returning to his Ph.D. program.

“As someone from a very small town, who at many times in their academic career has felt out of place at institutions of higher learning, I think [winning the Marshall] is a very powerful thing,” Allen said. “It’s a tremendous privilege, and I hope I can use it to widen academic circles that often feel exclusive.”

Sullivan, a history and literature concentrator, has been studying the organization of labor and distribution of land in the French Caribbean after France abolished slavery in its colonies in 1848, and how 19th-century ideologies shaped the way Black labor laws and land rights were legislated. After Harvard, he plans to pursue a Ph.D. in history at the University of Cambridge, where he’ll do a comparative study between the French Caribbean, the British Caribbean, and the American South in the years directly following the emancipation of enslaved residents.

“I love research, but a really valid critique of academia is the way it can be isolated in an ‘ivory tower,’” Sullivan said. “Scholarship should be used to help communities that need it the most.”

Simar Bajaj.

Bajaj and Dyer.

Dyer, originally from Tampa, Florida, is concentrating in electrical engineering with a secondary in chemistry and is also studying for a concurrent master’s in electrical engineering.

He has focused on clinical neuroscience and worked to expand medical education surrounding vestibular dysfunction and cochlear-implant surgery. Dyer said he became motivated to study and improve biomedical devices in part because his father, a military veteran, suffered hearing loss and other impairments.

“I’m very interested in the ability of medical devices to learn from people and to be designed around them,” Dyer said. He also wants to improve access to prostheses in low-resource settings.

Next year, Dyer plans to pursue an M.Phil. in health, medicine, and society at the University of Cambridge, with emphasis on investigating how disability interacts with people who are experiencing homelessness.

Wikstrom, a social studies concentrator from Oakland, California, has been active on campus as a member of the Harvard Crimson editorial board and the Harvard Undergraduate Philippine Forum.

She played an instrumental role in advocating for the launch of Harvard’s new Filipino (Tagalog) language courses. Wikstrom’s thesis research focuses on the English-only system of education implemented under U.S. colonial rule in the Philippines at the turn of the 20th century.

Also selected as a 2024 Rhodes Scholar , Wikstrom has opted to accept that award to study global and imperial history and U.S. history at Oxford.

Richard Allen.

Allen and Nagar.

Photos by Niles Singer and Kris Snibbe/Harvard Staff Photographers

The students say the scholarship will help them pursue their ultimate goal of making the world a better, safer, and more equitable place.

Nagar, a chemistry and economics concentrator from Chicago, is interested in improving the development of scientific research and innovation and keeping it in line with ethical principles and values.

Nagar plans to study innovation, public policy and public value at University College London for one year, and hopes to study global governance and diplomacy at Oxford for the second.

“Consistently, some new technology comes out and completely reframes how we should think about our lives and our well-being,” Nagar said. “It’s important that we figure out how to use them to actually change the world to make people’s lives better but also to set some guardrails so they aren’t developed in a way that could pose harm to people in the future.”

Bajaj, a chemistry and history of science concentrator, is passionate about public health — he has conducted research on health equity, obesity, and lung cancer and written lung cancer awareness resolutions that were passed by the U.S. Senate.

He is also passionate about science communication and science journalism, crediting the stories he’s written for The Atlantic, Time, The Washington Post, and other outlets with spreading the knowledge of science to audiences outside academia.

Bajaj plans to pursue a master’s in global health science and epidemiology at Oxford for the first year and hopes to study creative writing at the University of East Anglia for the second. He hopes to later return to the U.S. for medical school.

“I’ll talk to patients who are going through the worst thing you can imagine, and they’ll be like, ‘I’m one of the lucky ones,’” Bajaj said. “That’s what inspires me, that in the face of terrible health inequities, people maintain hope and resilience and belief in a better tomorrow. My goal is to help realize that better tomorrow.”
