I am well pleased to apply this application with concentration to study the course Information Systems Management MSc at the University of Bedfordshire. My interest in information technology and information systems drives me passionate to pursue management roles in charge of information systems. The course is designed to study aspects of information systems, digital analytics, marketing and the digital future and strategic management. From this course, I will be benefited from teamwork and engagement to contribute the ethical and innovative practice. Also from this MSc degree, I will learn the contemporary approaches to information systems management and how the approaches develop by challenges and opportunities. So, I am confident that this course is suitable to achieve my future career goal.

I have reviewed the programme of Information Systems Management MSc at the University of Bedfordshire and found some modules that are adjusted with the modern organisations and the global competitive business environment. By research, I came to know that this course is suitable for graduates who, through their interest in information technology and information systems wish to pursue management roles in charge of information systems. The modules include Business Dissertation, Digital Analytics and Online Customer Experience, Information Systems, Marketing and the Digital Future, Performance Achievement Planning, and Strategic Management. After progress to the Master's capstone stage, there will be an option to choose one of the three - Business Dissertation, Business Live Project, and Professional Practice. For that, students will learn to produce an individual, independent piece of work. And these modules will help me to broaden my knowledge of information technology and information systems on a professional level. Moreover, this course will be assessed by theories and concepts of real-life business situations, which will teach me to appreciate the importance of being dependable and give me an upper hand in my future career progression. After completion of my course, I want to be an Application/Business Analyst or Information System Manager in well-reputed organizations of my home country. I believe this course will be the right choice for my career plans and objectives.

I have completed my Bachelor of Science in Computer Science & Engineering from American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) in October 2021. Now, I had identified that I have an interest in the Information Systems Management sector and so that, I need to gain more comprehensive knowledge in the global competitive business environment. And this programme will develop my skills through employability practice-based teaching and learning approach in Information Systems theory against a context of real business. In addition, I am principled, dedicated, and self-motivated who is reliable in learning new skills. I am confident that my professional goal makes me a suitable candidate for the course.

By researching, I have come to know that this MSc course will explore the benefits of modern technologies and identify the problems associated with increasingly rapid rates of change in the information technology and business environment. By completing this MSc degree I will gain the concepts along with the number of important transferable skills that will be combined and evaluated in information systems management. In addition, it will also give me the professional experience phase which will make me career-ready. Moreover, the course has been designed to develop the graduates who are able to work by managing relationships through awareness of self and others to evaluate the ideas and contributing to team, will learn to appreciate the importance of being dependable. I think this course is ideal for me to improve my independence and self- development. My learned skills and detailed appreciation of my current knowledge will help me to complete my prospective study. I hope my chosen course will make it better and further open doors for my profession.

The brand of having a degree from the UK is highly respected by employers in Bangladesh as they believe that UK education molds proper professionals and there is an expectation are high from applicants with such degrees. Though, the study environment in my country follows theoretical systems of education which are quite different and no soft skills gained. In recent years, all companies in Bangladesh are emphasizing hiring of Bangladeshi graduates with degrees from abroad, as they see the transferrable skills carried forward from the international education will play a key role in transforming their approach to the business and believe these graduates are capable of doing so. This has played a key part in my decision-making when choosing a study destination. A recent Survey of International Graduate Outcomes 2019 by Universities UK International produced by graduate’s shows that 82% of international graduates say that their UK degree is worth the financial investment and the same percentage say they are satisfied with their careers. 83% feel that a UK degree has helped them to get jobs that they would not get otherwise. So this is the reason to choose the UK over other education destinations. I can see myself thriving more in a world of knowledge and teaching methods I’m accustomed to.

My choice is the University of Bedfordshire as it is incredibly welcoming to international students. To support students the University have invested heavily in their facilities to shape the physical and intellectual environment of learning. With over 22,000 students, the University provides outstanding higher education to people from all backgrounds and from over 120 countries, with a significant proportion of mature students and a growing international postgraduate community. According to DLHE 2018, 91% of graduates in work and/or further study within six months of graduating. Moreover, the University has campuses with excellent facilities. Tutors are high- qualified academics and most of them have received National Teaching Fellowship Awards. By researching a lot I have come to know that, Beds provide tuition to their students that goes way beyond the classroom. Conversely, I will have the opportunity to gain real-world knowledge and transferable skills that employers look for in graduate recruits. Actually, the University supports their students from a dedicated team during their course to get career-ready. And it will be a great achievement for me if I get the opportunity to study at the University of Bedfordshire.

It has been my childhood dream and a long-term academic goal to teach and publish research. Having majored in accounting in my undergraduate and graduate studies. I would now like to obtain a doctorate degree in Management Information Systems. I became interested in Information Technology several years ago when I served as both a project accountant and IT Manager at a design company and later as a business analyst for another firm. In my undergraduate study, I had the opportunity to be exposed to a range of business, statistics and information systems courses which reinforced my interest in accounting and information systems. In addition, I am a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and have taken graduate courses in financial statement analysis, data analytics, taxation of business entities, etc. which were enjoyable and enlightening providing me with a different view on the world in which we live. My undergraduate and master’s degree coursework involved a combination of accounting, statistics and Data Analytics courses. For the research requirement of my masters degree, I concentrated on the potential impact of blockchain technology for CPA’S and other practitioners.

My academic and professional goal is to conduct a world class research in Management Information Systems and publish in tier one journals drawing from influences of my academic studies. In terms of a career, I see myself teaching and publishing in finance My long-term career objective is to teach, conduct research and produce research publications that would add value and contribute to my field of specialisation. Completing a doctorate degree will bring a deep sense of accomplishment. It will give me the priceless opportunity to be challenged, motivated and learn. Although my career experience has provided me with an invaluable opportunity to further my knowledge in business analysis, project accounting and management, a doctoral program will allow me to continue with my quest for knowledge and provide me with an environment where I can conduct research.

Doctoral studies would be valuable to me in several ways. With an impressive faculty and a strong academic reputation, I believe my academic goals align with the Georgia State University (GSU) graduate program to which I am applying. Your doctoral program would allow me to think innovatively, use cutting edge research in Information Systems and establish myself as a leading researcher in information systems. I have no doubt that your school would contribute tremendously towards the achievement of my long-term goal. I am most impressed with gsu’s strength in business and computer science which had allowed it to develop expertise in business process and innovation. In addition, the school would provide me with the opportunity to work closely, share experiences, and exchange ideas with my professors and peers. Further, earning a Ph.D. in MIS would advance my other career goals by adding to my skills. Throughout the course of my doctoral studies, I hope to examine the conflict between the traditional role of IT project management and innovation. Completing projects on time, within budget, and within scope has become a huge challenge for many organisations. Nearly half of businesses are experiencing project failure in a given year. I am interested in looking at the phases and processes in project management from the perspectives of people, process & tool focusing my research on project manager leadership, team work, team member competencies, project team effectiveness, including how to effectively initiate, plan, execute, control, and complete projects as well as examine new tools that are available to IT project managers, Through the Ph.D. program, I hope to find answers to the question of how to find the right strategy that allows for oversight without stifling creativity and how can businesses re-imagine IT project management to suit their unique needs. I plan to work further on best practices for managing large Information Technology projects using emerging technologies and prepare a paper suitable for publication in my studies toward the doctoral degree, I hope to examine more closely the relationship between people, processes and tools in project management and consider role of each of them..

I believe I can make a great contribution to Management Information Systems using my background and experience in project accounting and business analysis. My capabilities and motivation to do independent research at the doctoral level is enhanced by my strong knowledge of Information Technology and Business Administration, strong analytical ability, a passion for analyzing problems rigorously and solving them ingenuously, and an excellent writing and presentation skills. I am highly motivated and driven with a capacity to make significant contribution to society. As a professor, I would impact knowledge, encourage innovation, inspire students, and bring out their hidden talents.

There is still much to be explored and studied in information systems academia, and I believe that Georgia State University doctoral program would provide me with the knowledge necessary to understand and apply information systems theories which I could in turn bring to my teaching and research career. I am committed and determined to succeed at the Ph.D. program, and I am confident that I will be able to contribute to the university community in my area of interest. As a professional with both academic background and work experience that has revolved around computer science and management, my decision to study Information Systems Management is a calculated effort to improve my qualifications and ensure that I develop the knowledge to proffer more practical, definitive, and knowledge-based solutions in my career.

My interest in information systems management was piqued years ago when I got my first job as a Data Entry Personnel in an engineering company. In this role, I was exposed to using information software to safely store data in an organized format and ensure easy recovery when it was needed. Before this job, I only had a Diploma certificate in Management Information Technology, but I became determined to improve my career chances through further studies. I later went on to obtain a Diploma in Computer Science, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from xxxx. During my undergraduate programs, I was exposed to interesting course modules like xxx (courses that relate to Information Systems Management) and while these modules have been instrumental in my success on the career front, I believe they have given me the foundation to succeed in this course.

Since I graduated with my bachelor’s degree, I have been applying my computer science knowledge as an ICT Educator and I have been able to harness information technology to contribute to the development of my students and the school in general. With the collaborative efforts of colleagues and the school management, I have been successful in redefining the school’s business operation using tech-enabled products to promote efficiency in key areas like bursary, data storage and management, and project management. My frequent involvement with certain business operations of the school has piqued my interest in further understanding how to leverage information technology to create value for businesses. I envision a career where I will be better at applying information systems to understand organizational processes and identify practical solutions to meet their needs, and I am motivated to make a move toward my dreams with this program.

This further inspired me to use the idea in my major project, "Voice Recognition Robotic Vehicle Based on Voice Recognition Algorithm," because it was so fascinating. The project made use of parts such an Android phone running version 2.2 or above, Bluetooth, an AVR, a battery, a motor driver, and an LCD for output. The terminal programme was used to setup the Bluetooth module AUBTM-20. Using the CELLBOTS software, the Android phone sent a signal to the Bluetooth module. The signal was received and sent to a microcontroller that directed the robotic car's drive by connecting to a 1293D whose output was then connected to rpm-dependent BO motors that would display the desired outcome on an alphanumeric LCD. I received training in Rail Net, Networking Hub, Server, Switch, and Electronic Exchange Working at Western Railways Ratlam Division to enhance the knowledge I gained from the project. Also, I received instruction in C, C, JAVA, MATLAB, VLSI, PLC, and embedded systems.

I started working for Tata Consultancy Services Ltd after finishing my undergrad degree. I was one of the top 10 students who got to pick their chosen learning technology during my ILP (Initial Learning Process) here. Afterwards, I picked up knowledge of JAVA, testing, SQL, and DBMS. Afterwards, British Gas (a renowned oil and gas business) chose me for training in SAP-ABAP based on my JAVA programming abilities. I have two years of experience working with SAP-ABAP and have worked on a variety of projects, including reports such as traditional, interactive, and object-oriented reports, dialogue interfaces such as BDC, BAPI, and IDOC, data dictionaries, smart forms, module pools, and enhancements such as User Exits and BADI, SAP performance tuning, and troubleshooting. Also, I've worked on a few intricate things like Contract Copy, a tool for updating line item net prices and adding new line items. I've worked with the Material Management Module (MMM) in addition to SAP-ABAP, and both our functional bodies and clients have given me praise for it.

I feel that the timing is right to pursue graduate education in the area of my interest now that I have the fundamental aptitude, skills, knowledge, and job experience in the field of information systems. Nowadays, it is widely accepted that life long study comes to be part of our life. Life-long study is a process to transform and develop myself as both profession and knowledge. Moreover, as a child, I had a great interest both in computer and business and therefore I had already decided to make a career both in computer and business. Hence, receiving tertiary education is one of the important milestones in my life. It is because I hope through attending to the university and majoring in the information system to more deeply to understand and study the principle and theories, and thereby prepare and optimize my future career.

In 21st century, almost all companies, governments, originations and even domestics are also computerization. With development of the technology, information system is playing more important role in the enterprises. Many companies use the information system to making the decision (Executive Information System and Management Information System), recording and processing the transaction (Data Processing System) and so forth. Moreover, a comprehensive and superior information system will make the company more competitive, efficiency and profitable, especially in the knowledge-based and globalization economy. As consider the optimum development and future in the computer industry and my interest, therefore, I make me passion to study the information system and enter into this industry.

However, developments of companies in Hong Kong are constrained by many inherited operation problems. These problem including lack of long term strategy and vision and therefore not willing to investment to the information system; neglect important of the information system; lack of management concepts and so forth. These factors are also prohibiting them to utilize the merit of talent and technique of Hong Kong. Therefore, I hope enter into computer industry and utilize my knowledge and skill to make a contribution of development of the computer industry.

I am currently studying the higher diploma and majoring in business studies (accounting and finance steam). During this time, I am taking the business finance, business law, corporation law, finance accounting, Information system, management information system, cost of management accounting, marketing and so forth with outstanding result, I believe these courses will strengthen my foundation in information system and business discipline. Moreover, through a series of group projects and assignments, it not only develops research, communication, leadership, presentation skills, but also leaned how to cooperate with different peoples and handle the conflict with my group members. I believe these experiences are facilitating to adopt the university’s life and study. In addition, outside my study, I also actively attend different activities in order to comprehensive development. In recent, I attended the Business Internship Program which is held by Prudential Assurance Co. Ltd. During this program, besides famous peoples sharing their opinions and experiences, I also cooperate with the different university student to complete the group project which is about poverty elderly. I believe these experiences are facilitating to adopt the university’s life and study.

In my mind, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a superior university and encourage research and innovation. Therefore, I believe that it not only will provide professional training, but also provide insight and change my perspectives and views in different areas and fields as well as what education I want. Therefore, I desire to complete my degree course in HKUST.

I assure you that if you given me the opportunity, I will prove myself a capable and dedicated student. I know that I have the right amount of interest in logistic as a subject and the potential for success in order to achieve what I want. Management Information Systems: In Business, in Academia, and in The Future

Management information systems (MIS) is a changing and challenging field. Modern businesses can’t survive for long without using some sort of MIS to manage massive amounts of data, and there are plenty of opportunities to study or work in the discipline. In this article, we’ll cover what is happening with MIS in both business and academia. You’ll learn about what constitutes an MIS, their origin and evolution, their capabilities, and also gain insights from experts in the field.

What Is a Management Information System?

In business, management information systems (or information management systems) are tools used to support processes, operations, intelligence, and IT. MIS tools move data and manage information. They are the core of the information management discipline and are often considered the first systems of the information age.

MIS produce data-driven reports that help businesses make the right decisions at the right time. While MIS overlaps with other business disciplines, there are some differences:

• Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) : This discipline ensures that all departmental systems are integrated. MIS uses those connected systems to access data to create reports. 
• IT Management : This department oversees the installation and maintenance of hardware and software that are parts of the MIS. The distinction between the two has always been fuzzy.
• E-commerce: E-commerce activity provides data that the MIS uses. In turn, the MIS reports based on this data affect e-commerce processes. 

Maeve Cummings , Co-author of Management Information Systems for the Information Age and Professor of Accounting & Computer Information Systems at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas, explains how MIS functions in academia. “[Management information systems is] the study of computers and computing in a business environment. Computer science focuses on the machine while information systems, or management information systems, focuses on how IT can support the strategy and operation of organizations,” she explains.

The concept includes what computers can do in this field, how people process information, and how best to make it accessible and up-to-date. Cummings adds, “The ‘right information in the right place at the right time’ is what we are striving for. This discipline is much more eclectic than straight computer science.” 

Besides computer science, there are fields of study that overlap with MIS, both at the theoretical and practical levels:

• Information Systems (IS): In IS, there is a greater emphasis on tools, while MIS places more emphasis on business processes and operations.
• Information Technology (IT): IT is similar to IS, but it focuses solely on computers.
• Informatics: A discipline that combines software engineering, information systems development, and networking. 
• Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering: These fields focus on the development and improvement of hardware and software, respectively. MIS helps determine the practical and theoretical implications of these changes. 

History of Management Information Systems

The technology and tools used in MIS have evolved over time. Kenneth and Aldrich Estel, who are widely cited on the topic, have identified six eras in the field. 

After an era ends, the previous era’s hardware are still in use. In fact, mainframes (albeit much faster, cheaper, and easier to access than their predecessors) are still used today.

From Ledgers to Flash Memory

In the days where businesses recorded all transactions in a bound ledger, tallying and tracking what was going on took a lot of time and work. In the late 1800s, process automation began to appear in the the form of punch cards. Associated machines tabulated the punch card data and printed results, which made it easier to capture transactions. The company that came to eventually be known as IBM was founded in the early 1900s and became the leader in business machines and punch cards. These cards evolved from a solution to automate pattern creation in weaving machines. The company adapted the idea to store and input data for applications from as simple as time for payroll to very complicated uses like recording census data. When general-purpose computers became available after WWII (originally developed for codebreaking, calculating shell trajectories, and other war-related needs), the punch card became an input method as well as a way to store outputs (though it required readers to decode and print the data so people could read it). 

Later, magnetic media (such as tapes and floppy disks) took over the storage of input and output, and computers could read and write directly to their own memory. This eliminated the need for the specialized machines. Next, optical media (like CDs and DVDs) that could store much more data on a single disc came along. Today, we are transitioning to flash memory (which also goes by solid state, as in a solid state drive or SSD). Flash memory has a higher capacity, is less volatile, and you can reuse it thousands of times with little degradation in quality.

Each of these periods has brought an increase in storage capacity at a lower cost. In tandem with the constant increase in computing power, more and more powerful software, almost-ubiquitous connectivity via wifi and mobile devices, and ever-expanding networking that evolved into the internet, work that previously took many hours - like tabulating a company's shipping costs over a year or population increases in a state over a century - now takes little time or human effort.

On the software side, the functions that paper ledgers performed moved to spreadsheet programs (the term spreadsheet came from the large sheets of paper spread out on tables). Microsoft Excel is the best-known example, but it wasn’t the first to become popular. VisiCalc, which was created for the Apple II in the late 1970s by Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston, was the first to gain popularity. There were spreadsheet programs available for mainframes and minicomputers before VisiCalc, but they didn’t offer the ability to see results in real time. 

Spreadsheets became more powerful in the 70s and 80s. When connected with databases, they gave users the ability to easily and quickly access and manipulate data. As users’ needs and desires changed, specialized programs were developed for different user groups, allowing innovative ways to use data. 

Information technology and MIS used to be synonymous. Task automation (such as report creation) led to an expansion of the work that fell under MIS. Simultaneously, the definition of IT expanded even more, and it now encompases areas beyond MIS, such as cyber security and network administration.

Categories of Management Information Systems

Management information system is a broad term that incorporates many specialized systems. The major types of systems include the following:

• Executive Information System (EIS): Senior management use an EIS to make decisions that affect the entire organization. Executives need high-level data with the ability to drill down as necessary. 
• Marketing Information System (MkIS): Marketing teams use MkIS to report on the effectiveness of past and current campaigns and use the lessons learned to plan future campaigns.
• Business Intelligence System (BIS): Operations use a BIS to make business decisions based on the collection, integration, and analysis of the collected data and information. This system is similar to EIS, but both lower level managers and executives use it. 
• Customer Relationship Management System (CRM): A CRM system stores key information about customers, including previous sales, contact information, and sales opportunities. Marketing, customer service, sales, and business development teams often use CRM .
• Sales Force Automation System (SFA): A specialized component of a CRM system that automates many tasks that a sales team performs. It can include contact management, lead tracking and generation, and order management.
• Transaction Processing System (TPS): An MIS that completes a sale and manages related details. On a basic level, a TPS could be a point of sale (POS) system, or a system that allows a traveller to search for a hotel and include room options, such as price range, the type and number of beds, or a swimming pool, and then select and book it. Employees can use the data created to report on usage trends and track sales over time.
• Knowledge Management System (KMS): Customer service can use a KM system to answer questions and troubleshoot problems. 
• Financial Accounting System (FAS): This MIS is specific to departments dealing with finances and accounting, such as accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR).
• Human Resource Management System ( HRMS ): This system tracks employee performance records and payroll data.
• Supply Chain Management System (SCM): Manufacturing companies use SCM to track the flow of resources, materials, and services from purchase until final products are shipped.  

Types of MIS Reports

At their core, management information systems exist to store data and create reports that business pros can use to analyze and make decisions. There are three basic kinds of reports: 

• Scheduled: Created on a regular basis, these reports use rules the requestor has provided to pull and organize the data. Scheduled reports allow businesses to analyze data over time (e.g. an airline can see the percentage of lost luggage by month), location (e.g. a retail chain can compare sales figures from different stores), or other parameters.
• Ad-hoc: These are one-off reports that a user creates to answer a question. If the reports are useful, you can turn ad-hoc reports into scheduled reports. 
• Real-time: This type of MIS report allows someone to monitor changes as they occur. For example, a call center manager may see an unexpected spike in call volume, and find a way to increase productivity or send some of the calls elsewhere.

Benefits of Using Management Information Systems

Using an MIS system can improve the performance of a company in many ways. R. Kelly Rainer, Jr. , George Phillips Privett Professor at Auburn University and Co-author of Management Information Systems, Moving Business Forward , says, “Any organization that does not use MIS simply will not exist for long. This statement would not have been true a couple of decades ago, but computer-based information systems are now essential to the survival of any organization.” 

Beyond the need to stay competitive, there are some key advantages of effective use of management information systems:

• Management can get an overview of their entire operation.
• Managers have the ability to get feedback about their performance.
• Organizations can maximize benefits from their investments by seeing what is working and what isn’t.
• Managers can compare results to planned performance by identifying strengths and weakness in both the plan and the performance.
• Companies can drive workflow improvements that result in better alignment of business processes to customer needs.
• Many business decisions are moved out of upper management to levels of the organization that is closer to where the knowledge and experience lie.

Management Information Systems in Healthcare Organizations

As healthcare companies continue to evolve with the changing technology landscape, and more information, like treatment data, patient information, and operations processes are stored within these systems, healthcare organizations face a need to gain visibility into this critical information anytime, anywhere.

MIS in healthcare enables data and information management related to clinical trials, financial and legal information, pharmaceutical details, physician credentials, and more, to be handled within one comprehensive system. However, because much of this information is confidential and must abide by HIPAA regulatory requirements, these organizations must also be confident that their MIS is safeguarded.

To enable healthcare teams to organize, manage, and store critical information within one holistic system, while also ensuring that their data is safe and all protected health information (PHI) is secure, they need a tool that provides transparency into critical processes, while remaining protected.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) projection for employment in computer and information occupations are projected to grow by 22 percent from 2010 to 2020, adding about 758,000 new jobs.

One big area of development in information technology is artificial intelligence (AI), which goes far beyond robots that control production (for example, in the automobile industry). Machines are becoming smarter in that they can learn how to solve problems. One such system is a neural network, which is used to alert you that your credit card may have been used unlawfully. These neural networks form a pattern of your spending and based on that, they flag purchases that are out of character, which is when you're notified or your credit card is frozen, depending on the situation. Such developments undoubtedly affect MIS, but they also affect the culture, the law, medicine, military defense, etc.

With so much big data being collected and analyzed nowadays, there will be a great need for legal minds to help sort through the various issues of what should and should not be legal from a privacy point of view. Also, with the budding field of computer-aided mind reading, still very much in its infancy, the issue of what society is allowed to do with that information will be crucial. For example, if you can read a person’s mind to determine whether that person is lying or not, would that be considered evidence or testimony? The law protects people from incriminating themselves (i.e. testimony). However, evidence, such as blood and hair samples may be taken without the consent of the accused. So which is mind-reading? The most interesting part of this business is that it is constantly changing and becoming more powerful. That is also the most alarming part of it.

• Artificial Intelligence: Narrow AI (AI for specific tasks) is now pervasive in many organizations. Advances in machine learning and deep learning are making narrow AI much more valuable to all of us. Think instantaneous translation, autonomous vehicles, robots, digital manufacturing (3D printing), etc. MIS departments must try to keep up with these advances and decide how narrow AI can be used in their organizations. 
• The Internet of Things (IoT): The rapid increase of placing sensors on all objects (animate and inanimate) is leading to a sense-and-respond environment. MIS employees should perform the SWOT analysis on IoT for their organizations. A well-publicized example of IoT is General Electric and its Predix operating system.
• Blockchain: Distributed-ledger technology is now being used in a large number of areas. Again, MIS employees must keep up with this technology and see how it impacts their organizations. 
• Financial Technology (FinTech): If your organization is in the financial sector, your MIS employees had better be closely watching start-up FinTech companies. These companies are planning on disrupting the traditional financial sector.
• Quantum Computing: As Moore’s Law begins to slow as we reach the physical limits on how many integrated circuits we can place on a chip, a new paradigm is emerging called quantum computing. Classical computing uses bits, which are either a “0” or a “1.” Quantum computing uses quantum bits (qubits). Unlike classical bits, qubits can store much more information than just 1 or 0 because they can exist in any superposition of these values. Quantum computing is in its very early days, but its potential can provide a dramatic increase in computing speeds. For example, scientists are hoping to be able to accurately model the climate. Another application lies in the field of information security.

Whether applying for a summer internship, a professional development opportunity, such as a Fulbright, an executive MBA program, or a senior leadership development course, a personal statement threads the ideas of your CV, and is longer and has a different tone and purpose than a traditional cover letter. A few adjustments to your personal statement can get your application noticed by the reviewer.

• Make sure you’re writing what they want to hear. Most organizations that offer a fellowship or internship are using the experience as a pipeline: It’s smart to spend 10 weeks and $15,000 on someone before committing five years and $300,000. Rarely are the organizations being charitable or altruistic, so align your stated goals with theirs
• Know when to bury the lead, and when to get to the point. It’s hard to paint a picture and explain your motivations in 200 words, but if you have two pages, give the reader a story arc or ease into your point by setting the scene.
• Recognize that the reviewer will be reading your statement subjectively, meaning you’re being assessed on unknowable criteria. Most people on evaluation committees are reading for whether or not you’re interesting. Stated differently, do they want to go out to dinner with you to hear more? Write it so that the person reading it wants to hear more.
• Address the elephant in the room (if there is one). Maybe your grades weren’t great in core courses, or perhaps you’ve never worked in the field you’re applying to. Make sure to address the deficiency rather than hoping the reader ignores it because they won’t. A few sentences suffice. Deficiencies do not need to be the cornerstone of the application.

At multiple points in your life, you will need to take action to transition from where you are to where you want to be. This process is layered and time-consuming, and getting yourself to stand out among the masses is an arduous but not impossible task. Having a polished resume that explains what you’ve done is the common first step. But, when an application asks for it, a personal statement can add color and depth to your list of accomplishments. It moves you from a one-dimensional indistinguishable candidate to someone with drive, interest, and nuance.

• Management Information Systems (MIS): Definition and How It Works

Management Information System, commonly referred to as MIS is a phrase consisting of three words: management, information and systems. Looking at these three words, it’s easy to define Management Information Systems as systems that provide information to management.

That is the simple definition of MIS that generally sums up what a Management Information System is, and what it should do. However, its role and impact on the smooth operation of a company can never be overemphasized. That is the reason why every successful company makes use of these systems in one way or another.

The reason why Management Information Systems are very important in the day to day operation of companies is because these systems work with people, organizations, technology and relationships among the people and organizations affecting the company.

In the decade between 2014 and 2024, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that MIS professionals, and specifically database administrators, should expect the highest job growth when compared to all the other occupations.

HISTORY OF MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Owing to the strong link between Management Information Systems and technology, the history of these systems goes hand in hand with the history of computing technology.

With that said, we will split the evolution of MIS into five eras. Let’s take a closer look at what changes were effected in each of these eras.

First Era: Computing on Mainframe and Minicomputers

This was the era before 1965 when computing was done on large mainframe computers located in large special rooms designed specifically for the computers. This included special temperature control to ensure that the machines always operated in optimum conditions.

These computers were operated by teams of technicians and hence the cost of operating them was quite high. As a result, most of the computing was done on a time-sharing basis to meet the high costs of owning and operating these mainframes. The dominant supplier of hardware and software in this era was IBM .

With time, technology advanced and towards the end of this era, minicomputers were introduced. The minicomputers were significantly smaller and cheaper, hence large companies could afford to own these and do their computing in-house. However, the minicomputers were still very expensive when compared to today’s standards.

Second Era: Personal Computers

This era began in 1965 and was mainly as a result of the introduction of the microprocessor. This meant that companies could now afford cheaper personal computers, which provided access to computing power that would have cost exorbitant amounts of money just one decade before.

By mid 1980s, personal computers were becoming much more affordable hence they were made available to the mass markets. The predominant ones at this time were the Apple I and Apple II, and the IBM personal computer, commonly referred to as PC. The PC was friendlier to businesses, which explains why it rose to popularity in those early days.

During this era, Management Information Systems started making way into businesses thanks to the development of a spreadsheet application known as VisiCalc (short for “visible calculator”). This application was released originally for the Apple II, but a PC version was also made for the IBM PC when it was produced.

This application is considered by many the factor that turned the microcomputer from an expensive gadget for scientists and enthusiasts to an all-important business tool thus paving way for the modern Management Information Systems. Following the success of the VisiCalc, more powerful spreadsheet applications like the Lotus 1-2-3 and Microsoft’s Multiplan and later Excel.

Third Era: Client/Server Networks

With the widening use of computing in business and advances in technology, more needs came from the business community to ensure a more efficient interaction with information. Since companies were able to computing thanks to reduced costs of computers, better ways had to be sought for making the most out of this computing power.

One of the most prominent needs that arose was the need for employees within organizations to share computer information with other employees. The solution was provided by client/server networks that went a long way in enhancing the management information systems we have today.

One big step in this era was the development of intranets which were static websites that gave employees access to information that was stored in a central location. This made it possible to work faster and more efficiently because more people could access information on a server as long as their computers were on a common network.

Fourth Era: Enterprise Computing

The fourth era was an improvement of the third era that saw to it that different departments in companies had even better access to information. The main improvement was the introduction of high speed enterprise networks that enabled faster access to information.

This provided a better and more complete management structure since decision making was easier thanks to the better access of information from different parts of the company. Essentially, the applications used by departments in the company were consolidated and woven together into a single platform that was accessible from the company network.

High-speed networks were also added into the mix to increase the efficiency of the platform. This meant that business operations such as finance, accounting, sales, marketing, inventory and even human resource management could be harmonized to ensure cooperation and efficiency throughout the entire company.

Although the applications used by different departments differed and measures of access control were introduced to limit access to sensitive company information, this era gave top management officials a complete view of the current standing of the entire business.

Fifth Era: Cloud Computing

This is the current era that employs the latest networking technology to further enhance information processing and access by business officials and management executives. The added element in this era is the fact that the networking technology adds a level of mobility to the systems.

This means that irrespective of your location, the configuration that you are using or the hardware that’s available, you will still be able to use business applications and access data stored in company servers. With the improvement of cellphone networks to provide high speed mobile data access and the increase in popularity of Wi-Fi networks, managers have ready access to the Management Information System around the clock hence better decisions can be made faster.

This era frees management from the chains of office-bound computers with local network access. With the rise in popularity of mobile devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablet computers, great levels of mobility are achieved while still improving on efficiency.

This also calls for a change in management style since the workers will be generally more informed due to the ability to produce and consume more information about the business, giving rise to what’s now known as the knowledge worker . Knowledge workers are more empowered and hence more productive naturally.

This means that the command-and-control method of management will no longer be the most effective management style for this worker. As a result, employee autonomy is gradually becoming more and more inevitable.

TYPES OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Management Information Systems is one out of several information systems that are used in business. To better understand Management Information Systems, let’s look at the different types of information systems available in business.

• Transaction Processing Systems. These systems have been designed to collect, process and store transactions that occur in the day to day operations of a company. The system can also be used to cancel or modify transactions done in the past if the need arises. One property of this system that enables them to work effectively is the ability to accurately record multiple transactions even if the different transactions take place simultaneously. They are built to be able to handle large volumes of transactions. Examples include stock control systems, payroll systems, order processing systems etc.

• Executive Information Systems. Also known as Executive Support System, this is a tool used for reporting enterprise-wide data to top executives. These systems provide quick and easy to use reports that are presented in graphical displays that are easy to compare. They can be taken as specialized decision support systems because they provide information necessary to help improve the quality of decisions. Owing to the high expectations from such a system, these systems need to be highly individualized hence they are usually custom made for specific clients. They are also customizable to fit the specific needs of the clients.
• Management Information Systems. These systems make use of information technology to help managers ensure a smooth and efficient running of the organization. Information collected by these systems is structured so that the managers can easily evaluate the company’s current performance vis-à-vis previous outputs. Some of the common types of Management Information Systems include process control systems, human resource management systems, sales and marketing systems, inventory control systems, office automation systems, enterprise resource planning systems, accounting and finance systems and management reporting systems.

COMPONENTS OF MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

To effectively deliver the information needed to decision makers, Management Information Systems need to have the necessary components to collect, process, store and retrieve the information whenever it is needed.

To achieve this, these systems use the following four components:

• Information System. This is a combination of software, hardware, personnel and infrastructure. This component helps in the collection of data that is stored in the MIS. The hardware includes computers, scanners, printers and network devices. The software elements include the company’s enterprise software and any other software that is used in the running of the company’s network. This component makes it possible for employees to interact with the system and thus information can be collected
• Database Management System. This component is primarily made up of computer programs that help in the storage and retrieval of data. Of course, it also includes the actual physical databases where the information is stored after it has been captured. There are several different database management systems that can be used in Management Information Systems. The suitability of the systems will depend on the amount of data that will need to be processed and stored in the system. There are small database management systems that can comfortably work on personal computers and there are huge ones that will need larger and more complex machines like mainframe computers. The main role of Management Information Systems is to report on business operations with the purpose of supporting decision making. This is to ensure that the organization is managed in a better and more efficient way so that it can be able to achieve full potential thus gain competitive advantage.

Let’s look at some of the other roles played by Management Information Systems in an organization.

• To provide information readily to company decision makers. Regardless of whether it is a marketing, financial or operational issue, managers need quick access to information so that they can make good decisions that will have a positive impact on the company’s performance. • To run possible scenarios in different business environments. Before making a decision that will affect the overall standing of the business, a lot of precaution must be taken. There is a need to check and verify that the company will not suffer after making a decision. Management Information Systems enable executives to run what-if scenarios so that they can see how some of the important metrics in the business will be affected by a given decision. The data is presented in easy to understand reports and graphs that make interpretation easy. For example, a human resource manager will be able to tell what will happen to the revenue, production, sales and even profit after reducing the number of workers in a manufacturing department. Before making a decision, executives use these systems to make projections of the expectations from the particular decision. If they decide to go ahead with the changes, there will be a need to keep monitoring the performance to see if you are on track to achieving the desired results. Management Information Systems give detailed reports and recommendations so that the evaluation of the goals moves smoothly and effectively. You get data that shows if your decisions have had the desired effect. If not, you will be able to take the necessary corrective measures early so that you can get back on track.
• To improve on the company’s reporting. One of the reasons why Management Information Systems are favored by large companies is the effectiveness of the reporting features. The decisions can be made quickly because the information is presented in an easy to understand format. The fact that the system is accessible by people from different parts of the organization makes it an effective reporting and communication tool. Findings can be shared among colleagues with all the necessary supplementary data. In addition, the company needs to invest in a good network that will connect these devices in order for the system to work effectively.
• Training of the workforce can also become a problem when applying Management Information Systems in a company. This therefore makes it necessary for the company to ensure that employees and their managers are well trained on how to use the system. This can be an expensive and time consuming exercise.
• The systems are expensive to purchase . Owing to the unique needs of each organization, Management Information Systems have to be customized for each company. This means that there has to be brainstorming sessions where the vendors sit with management officials seeking to understand the needs before they can develop the system. As a result, the cost of the system goes up, thus taking it out of reach for small and medium companies.
• Many companies end up purchasing systems that lack the features they need most . As mentioned earlier, each company has its own unique needs when it comes to Management Information Systems. When you purchase a system that is not meant for your company, you will have better access to data that doesn’t help improve your operations. As a result, you will not be able to get the best return on investment.
• There is also a need for trained personnel to keep the system in good working order at all times . Like any other system, management information systems need proper maintenance in order for them to produce the best results. This means that you will need to add specialized personnel for system maintenance in your company. Without these people, using the system will be a challenge since errors will go unresolved and this will result in inefficiencies in the operations.
• Management Information Systems are heavily affected by large changes in the company . This means that before you make any change in the way you run the company, there will be a need to consider the impact of the changes on the information system. Sometimes, it becomes impossible to make some changes without changing the Management Information Systems hence having the system in place ends up being a limitation. However, most small changes should easily be incorporated in a good MIS.
• Management Information Systems will result in the loss of employment for a number of employees in a company . People like office messengers and traditional registry clerks will need to be reduced or eliminated after the system has been incorporated since some of these tasks will be automatically done on the system. These employees will not be happy about the changes and this can easily result in lawsuits or other problems with trade unions when large numbers of employees are retrenched.

This is the first step towards getting an effective system. Before you even start looking for a vendor, it’s important to first ensure that you know exactly what type of system you want for your company. Make a portfolio score card that is in line with the goals that you have as a company.

Once you have established what you need, it’s time to talk to a number of vendors in the market.

Better accessibility also reduces the time taken for data to be entered in the system and as a result making it available faster.

Get a system that only has the features that you need

Instead of investing in a complicated system that is expensive to run and tracks large volumes of data that you don’t need, you should go for something that addresses the immediate needs of your company’s management.

This way, you will not have to pay too much for the system and at the same time, you will not take your workforce through a complicated and unnecessary training process. You will also reduce the chances of errors arising in the use of the system since the features and functions will be easy to understand.

Make sure that you choose a system that is adaptable to changes

The system that you choose should be able to adapt to changes in the company. With time, you might need to change the personnel handling different tasks in the system or the reports that you will need the system to generate.

It is important to ensure that the system is able to handle these small but frequent changes easily without having to contact the developer. If there will be a need to contact the developer, like in the event of large changes, you should discuss this early before you make the decision to purchase the system.

In this paper, we address the issue of developing a study programme profile, by which the competencies and learning outcomes at the level of a study programme are systematically related to the competencies and learning outcomes at the level of a course. We describe a model of designing a programme profile for a particular bachelor’s study programme in the field of business. Our approach adopts concepts of general and specific competencies designated from the Tuning project to link learning outcomes at the course level with the learning outcomes at the programme level with involvement of all the relevant stakeholders by using a triangulation technique (involving the students, employers and teachers). The results elaborate a clearer picture of programme characteristics with precisely defined key competencies and learning outcomes linked with the study courses, as well as a clearer description of the employment potential.

Computing (information systems) personal statement example.

I want to return to studying so that I can better myself for the future and gain qualifications for some of the skills that I already possess. I want to start studying computers and information systems, I already have extensive knowledge and experience in this subject and I regret not going straight back in to education when I left school so I am doing it now.

I have over 12 years experience with computers and I am always doing something with them whether it's day to day tasks such as word processing or more complex subjects such as web design and administrating Linux web servers and making sure they are secure. I currently administrate two Linux web servers as a hobby for a couple of web sites that I run. One of the sites has grown so rapidly over the last two years it has required its own dedicated server to run as shared web hosting would not suffice.

With the two web servers that I currently administrate I have configured them from the ground up. I have configured DNS to route the server IP address to my chosen domain name, FTP server, MYSQL Database Server and Apache for serving web pages. I have also automated the process of making daily backups of the data held on the server. I am also constantly monitoring these servers to make sure they are running efficiently and also keeping up to date with security issues and making sure my servers are not vulnerable to current exploits etc.

As you can probably determine from what I have explained above I would like to work towards a career in IT. I would love to go down the Server Admin Route or get into computer security as they are the main areas which interest me the most, although i would like to consider myself open to all areas of IT as it is something which i enjoy to do at home on a regular basis.
