HMOs have the opportunity to work in one of three dedicated streams (medical, surgical and general) to provide the experience and training to match your career interests.

Western Health actively supports HMOs planning to enter training in all specialties including General Practice.

For 2024 Western Health offered 226 HMO positions.

HMO Education and Support

HMOs are supported by dedicated Directors of Training and Medical Education Officers for each stream from the Western Health Medical Education Unit , with unit specific weekly education on each rotation and dedicated weekly HMO teaching in most rotations.

HMO Rotations

Most rotations occur at our two main campuses: Sunshine Hospital (including the Joan Kirner Women’s & Children’s Hospital) and Footscray Hospital. A small number of rotations occur at our Williamstown and Sunbury campuses.

A small number of HMOs rotate externally for terms including Paediatrics in Mildura and Melton, Paediatric Surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital, and Psychiatry at Melton and at Orygen.

Senior HMO Positions

A number of Senior HMO positions for PGY3+ level doctors at Western Health are appointed directly by individual departments (ED, critical care, O&G, neonatal services), see below for further details.

Our Generalist HMO position at Bacchus Marsh Hospital is a Monday-Friday daytime hours position with no after hours or weekend shifts.

PART-TIME ROLES: GENERAL STREAM PGY3+ HMO

We also have a limited number of new dedicated part-time positions in the General Stream, recruited directly by Western Health. These positions are 0.5FTE for 12 months, with set rotations in ED, Paediatric ED, Aged Care/GEM, and a leave/nights/relief term.

Medical (BPT) HMO Stream 2025

HMOs in the BPT medical stream are recruited via the PMCV match – applications must be made to both the PMCV and Western Health.

Other Senior HMO positions

These positions directly recruited by their respective departments and are generally advertised on our Western Health careers website in around April/May each year.

Generalist HMO position at Bacchus Marsh Hospital

The Bacchus Marsh campus at Western Health offers a rare introduction to rural generalist experience for HMOs in a location close to Melbourne.

The HMO role includes time working in the Urgent Care Centre (UCC) and as well as the Medical & Surgical Ward (MSW). Rostering is weekdays only 8am-4pm with no after-hours or weekends.

Full-time, part time and job-share applications are welcome from doctors with at least 3 years of medical experience at the time of commencement, with flexibility for suitable candidates to accommodate GP exam preparation, professional development, and work-life balance. Appointments are for 6 months (3 months UCC / 3 months MSW) with potential to extend to 12 months if desired.

ED Medical Officers

The ED Medical Officer position is suitable for PGY3+ doctors interested in an immersive ED experience.

Both our Sunshine and Footscray departments are supported by on-the-floor Consultant led supervision, leadership and teaching from 0800-2400hrs, 7 days a week. A dedicated ED HMO education program runs weekly as well as additional bedside teaching and simulation. We also support HMOs interested in completing their ACEM certificate, and research is actively supported through the Joseph Epstein Centre for Emergency Medicine Research.

O&G Senior HMO

12 month O&G Senior HMO positions are available at the Joan Kirner Women’s & Children’s at Sunshine Hospital (JKWC). The O&G Unit at JKWC aims for excellence in all aspects of specialist O&G training, and successful applicants for the position can expect a supported and rewarding training experience.

The year comprises the following attachments and supervised training opportunities:

  • Supervised Elective Caesarean Section training & Birthing Suite
  • Minor gynaecological surgical procedures
  • Rostered night duty (including acute gynaecology and peri-operative patient care)
  • Opportunities to participate in educational, training, research and audit activities in both Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Opportunity to complete the advanced DRANZCOG for those on rural GP/ACCRM pathway

These positions are most suited to applicants who plan a career in O&G, as either a rural procedural GP, or those who intend on applying for entry to the RANZCOG Training Program.

Eligibility criteria:

  • PGY 2 or above at time of application with minimum 6 months prior O&G experience prior to commencement

Neonatal Senior HMO

6-12 months positions with the Newborn Services (neonatal) team at the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital (JKWC).

JKWC Neonatal Unit has 30 cots: 15 Intensive Care/High Dependency and 15 Special Care Nursery, providing tertiary neonatal services to >6000 babies each year.

The position offers a very supportive work and learning environment, with 24hr consultant on-site cover.

As a Neonatal Senior HMO you will work on a rotating roster and spend time in NICU, Special Care Nursery, Birth Suites and Postnatal Ward, working with more experienced Neonatal Registrars and Fellows.

The position includes a comprehensive education program with protected teaching time, and extensive opportunities to develop medical and procedural skills in the care of newborn babies.
