20 Ways to Protect Your Mental Health

Here’s what science shows can help keep us on track..

We’ve crossed the threshold into a new decade. There’s a lot of resolution advice swirling, but not all of it is evidence-based or realistic.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global mental health crisis. It projects that, by the next turn of the decade in 2030, lifestyle and stress -related illness will surpass communicable diseases.

Modern brain science has a lot to say about what helps protect us given the risk factors of today. Here are 20 strategies to practice regularly to shield and sustain you:

1. Recognize you are not a robot or machine. Humans are beings, not doings. We’re not meant to be on 24-7. You are not above the laws of science, which emphasize the importance of breaks and replenishment.

2. Practice mindfulness . Be fully present in each moment. Avoid rash judgment of emotions and sensations. Relish in the positive. Recognize negative situations will shift.

3. Prioritize sleep. Sleep deprivation leads to poor moods, concentration , and health. Endless studies point to the critical nature of sleep on outlook, performance, and functioning.

4. Avoid self- medication . Keep an eye out for hooks. If you crave or rely on alcohol , drugs, caffeine, or sweets to escape, numb, or raise your energy, it might be a clue you need new go-to’s to raise your dopamine and endorphins.

5. Eat clean. Processed foods disrupt our brains and bodies. Rather than fad diets, consider drawing from ancient Ayurvedic tradition, which emphasizes eating according to “dosha,” one’s body type. Eating local and in season is optimal. Real, natural, pure food—not manufactured chemicals—maximizes well-being.

6. Step it up. We are wired to walk. The bilateral movement enhances our capacity to reason, problem solve all while improving mood. Consider a step-tracking device to spur you on. Whenever possible, choose stairs over elevators and walking meetings over sit-downs. If you are not able-bodied, leverage the types of movement and exercise available to you.

7. Use music as therapy . Listen to music, make music, sing songs, dance, and hit repeat. Neurologist Oliver Sacks asserts that music “can lift us out of depression when nothing else can.” His work reveals us as “musical species” who benefit immensely from its extraordinary healing power.

8. Unleash your creativity . Novelty and variety are highly beneficial for the brain. Creative outlets and activities are essential. Let your life be art.

9. Avoid social comparison. Use examples of success as motivation , not self-sabotage . Watch out for people that present a perfect picture of life—their neatly packaged story isn’t the full story.

10. Practice self-compassion. Adopt a kind spirit towards yourself. Constant self-criticism is unhealthy and unproductive. Treat yourself like you would a friend.

11. Guard against technostress. Constant screen use is associated with poor mental health outcomes. Set boundaries with technology and instead invest your time in activities that bolster well-being.

12. Spend time in green spaces and nature. Numerous studies reveal the positive impact of nature on well-being. Time in the elements—air, water, fire, and earth—are highly beneficial to the brain, body, and soul.

13. Let them see you sweat. Hiding in the shadows exasperates mental health distress. Finding trusted people to reveal your struggles can be a catalyst for healing and growth.

14. Laugh and play. Humor is a protective factor for our mental health. Taking life too seriously inhibits joy. Play and be playful.

15. Volunteer. Research shows that people who give their time to contribute positively to the lives of others tend to flourish. Living life from a “we” stance, not a “me” stance, helps us thrive.

16. Count your blessings. Studies show that practicing gratitude positively boosts mental health. Happiness researcher Sonja Lyubormirsky explains that heartfelt, intermittent, intentional practice is better than constant passive, automated expressions of thankfulness .

6 ways to take care of your mental health and well-being this World Mental Health Day

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on people’s mental health. People from all walks of life have experienced stress throughout the pandemic – from frontline workers who are overwhelmed with work, young people who can’t go to school, family members who are separated from each other, those impacted by COVID-19 infection or loss of loved ones, or people with pre-existing mental health conditions who face difficulties in accessing mental health services during lockdowns.

It is understandable to feel scared, anxious or helpless during this unprecedented time. But whatever situation you are in and wherever you are in the Pacific, you have the power to look after your mental health and well-being. As we celebrate World Mental Health Day this 10 October, here are 6 things you can do to help you cope, not only with the COVID-19 pandemic, but any event that may cause stress.

1. Talk to someone you trust

Talking to someone you trust – whether a friend, a family member, or a colleague – can help. You may feel better if you are able to openly share what you are going through with someone who cares about you. If you live in an area where face-to-face interactions are limited, you can still stay connected with your loved ones through a video call, phone call or messaging app.

2. Look after your physical health

Taking care of your physical health helps improve your mental health and well-being. Be active for at least 30 minutes daily, whether that’s running, walking, yoga, dancing, cycling, or even gardening. Eat a balanced and healthy diet. Make sure to get enough sleep.

3. Do activities that you enjoy

Try to continue doing the activities that you find meaningful and enjoyable, such as cooking for yourself or your loved ones, playing with your pet, walking in the park, reading a book, or watching a film or TV series. Having a regular routine with activities that make you feel happy will help you maintain good mental health.

4. Steer away from harmful substances

Don’t use harmful substances such as drugs, kava, alcohol or tobacco to cope with what you’re feeling. Though these may seem to help you feel better in the short term, they can make you feel worse in the long run. These substances are also dangerous and can put you and those around you at risk of diseases or injuries.

5. Take two minutes to focus on the world around you

Help free yourself of constantly swirling thoughts by reconnecting yourself with where you are at this moment in time. Follow along with the video below or simply take three slow deep breaths, feel your feet grounded on the floor and ask yourself:

  • What are five things I can see?
  • What are four things I can hear?
  • What can I smell?
  • What does it feel like to touch my knees or a something else I can reach? How does it feel underneath my fingers?

6. Seek professional help

If you feel like you cannot cope with the stress that you are facing, seek professional help by calling your local mental health helpline or getting in touch with your counsellor or doctor.  Remember you are not alone, and there are things you can do to support your emotional wellbeing.

Physical Activity Is Good for the Mind and the Body

Health and Well-Being Matter is the monthly blog of the Director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

Everyone has their own way to “recharge” their sense of well-being — something that makes them feel good physically, emotionally, and spiritually even if they aren’t consciously aware of it. Personally, I know that few things can improve my day as quickly as a walk around the block or even just getting up from my desk and doing some push-ups. A hike through the woods is ideal when I can make it happen. But that’s me. It’s not simply that I enjoy these activities but also that they literally make me feel better and clear my mind.

Mental health and physical health are closely connected. No kidding — what’s good for the body is often good for the mind. Knowing what you can do physically that has this effect for you will change your day and your life.

Physical activity has many well-established mental health benefits. These are published in the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and include improved brain health and cognitive function (the ability to think, if you will), a reduced risk of anxiety and depression, and improved sleep and overall quality of life. Although not a cure-all, increasing physical activity directly contributes to improved mental health and better overall health and well-being.

Learning how to routinely manage stress and getting screened for depression are simply good prevention practices. Awareness is especially critical at this time of year when disruptions to healthy habits and choices can be more likely and more jarring. Shorter days and colder temperatures have a way of interrupting routines — as do the holidays, with both their joys and their stresses. When the plentiful sunshine and clear skies of temperate months give way to unpredictable weather, less daylight, and festive gatherings, it may happen unconsciously or seem natural to be distracted from being as physically active. However, that tendency is precisely why it’s so important that we are ever more mindful of our physical and emotional health — and how we can maintain both — during this time of year.

Roughly half of all people in the United States will be diagnosed with a mental health disorder at some point in their lifetime, with anxiety and anxiety disorders being the most common. Major depression, another of the most common mental health disorders, is also a leading cause of disability for middle-aged adults. Compounding all of this, mental health disorders like depression and anxiety can affect people’s ability to take part in health-promoting behaviors, including physical activity. In addition, physical health problems can contribute to mental health problems and make it harder for people to get treatment for mental health disorders.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the need to take care of our physical and emotional health to light even more so these past 2 years. Recently, the U.S. Surgeon General highlighted how the pandemic has exacerbated the mental health crisis in youth .

The good news is that even small amounts of physical activity can immediately reduce symptoms of anxiety in adults and older adults. Depression has also shown to be responsive to physical activity. Research suggests that increased physical activity, of any kind, can improve depression symptoms experienced by people across the lifespan. Engaging in regular physical activity has also been shown to reduce the risk of developing depression in children and adults.

Though the seasons and our life circumstances may change, our basic needs do not. Just as we shift from shorts to coats or fresh summer fruits and vegetables to heartier fall food choices, so too must we shift our seasonal approach to how we stay physically active. Some of that is simply adapting to conditions: bundling up for a walk, wearing the appropriate shoes, or playing in the snow with the kids instead of playing soccer in the grass.

Sometimes there’s a bit more creativity involved. Often this means finding ways to simplify activity or make it more accessible. For example, it may not be possible to get to the gym or even take a walk due to weather or any number of reasons. In those instances, other options include adding new types of movement — such as impromptu dance parties at home — or doing a few household chores (yes, it all counts as physical activity).

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I built a makeshift gym in my garage as an alternative to driving back and forth to the gym several miles from home. That has not only saved me time and money but also afforded me the opportunity to get 15 to 45 minutes of muscle-strengthening physical activity in at odd times of the day.

The point to remember is that no matter the approach, the Physical Activity Guidelines recommend that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (anything that gets your heart beating faster) each week and at least 2 days per week of muscle-strengthening activity (anything that makes your muscles work harder than usual). Youth need 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. Preschool-aged children ages 3 to 5 years need to be active throughout the day — with adult caregivers encouraging active play — to enhance growth and development. Striving toward these goals and then continuing to get physical activity, in some shape or form, contributes to better health outcomes both immediately and over the long term.

For youth, sports offer additional avenues to more physical activity and improved mental health. Youth who participate in sports may enjoy psychosocial health benefits beyond the benefits they gain from other forms of leisure-time physical activity. Psychological health benefits include higher levels of perceived competence, confidence, and self-esteem — not to mention the benefits of team building, leadership, and resilience, which are important skills to apply on the field and throughout life. Research has also shown that youth sports participants have a reduced risk of suicide and suicidal thoughts and tendencies. Additionally, team sports participation during adolescence may lead to better mental health outcomes in adulthood (e.g., less anxiety and depression) for people exposed to adverse childhood experiences. In addition to the physical and mental health benefits, sports can be just plain fun.

Physical activity’s implications for significant positive effects on mental health and social well-being are enormous, impacting every facet of life. In fact, because of this national imperative, the presidential executive order that re-established the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition explicitly seeks to “expand national awareness of the importance of mental health as it pertains to physical fitness and nutrition.” While physical activity is not a substitute for mental health treatment when needed and it’s not the answer to certain mental health challenges, it does play a significant role in our emotional and cognitive well-being.

No matter how we choose to be active during the holiday season — or any season — every effort to move counts toward achieving recommended physical activity goals and will have positive impacts on both the mind and the body. Along with preventing diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and the additional risks associated with these comorbidities, physical activity’s positive effect on mental health is yet another important reason to be active and Move Your Way .

For instance, weather conditions may influence an increase in suicide cases. Likewise, experiencing natural disasters firsthand can increase the chances of developing PTSD. In certain cases, air pollution may produce negative effects on depression symptoms.

  • Thinking of self-harm or causing harm to others
  • Being unable to perform daily tasks with ease

Whether young or old, the importance of mental health for total well-being cannot be overstated. When psychological wellness is affected, it can cause negative behaviors that may not only affect personal health but can also compromise relationships with others.

Mental health refers to a person's psychological, emotional, and social well-being; it influences what they feel and how they think, and behave. The state of cognitive and behavioural well-being is referred to as mental health. The term 'mental health' is also used to refer to the absence of mental disease. 

Mental health means keeping our minds healthy. Mankind generally is more focused on keeping their physical body healthy. People tend to ignore the state of their minds. Human superiority over other animals lies in his superior mind. Man has been able to control life due to his highly developed brain. So, it becomes very important for a man to keep both his body and mind fit and healthy. Both physical and mental health are equally important for better performance and results.

Importance of Mental Health 

An emotionally fit and stable person always feels vibrant and truly alive and can easily manage emotionally difficult situations. To be emotionally strong, one has to be physically fit too. Although mental health is a personal issue, what affects one person may or may not affect another; yet, several key elements lead to mental health issues.

Many emotional factors have a significant effect on our fitness level like depression, aggression, negative thinking, frustration, and fear, etc. A physically fit person is always in a good mood and can easily cope up with situations of distress and depression resulting in regular training contributing to a good physical fitness standard. 

Mental fitness implies a state of psychological well-being. It denotes having a positive sense of how we feel, think, and act, which improves one’s ability to enjoy life. It contributes to one’s inner ability to be self-determined. It is a proactive, positive term and forsakes negative thoughts that may come to mind. The term mental fitness is increasingly being used by psychologists, mental health practitioners, schools, organisations, and the general population to denote logical thinking, clear comprehension, and reasoning ability.

 Negative Impact of Mental Health

The way we physically fall sick, we can also fall sick mentally. Mental illness is the instability of one’s health, which includes changes in emotion, thinking, and behaviour. Mental illness can be caused due to stress or reaction to a certain incident. It could also arise due to genetic factors, biochemical imbalances, child abuse or trauma, social disadvantage, poor physical health condition, etc. Mental illness is curable. One can seek help from the experts in this particular area or can overcome this illness by positive thinking and changing their lifestyle.

Regular fitness exercises like morning walks, yoga, and meditation have proved to be great medicine for curing mental health. Besides this, it is imperative to have a good diet and enough sleep. A person needs 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night on average. When someone is tired yet still can't sleep, it's a symptom that their mental health is unstable. Overworking oneself can sometimes result in not just physical tiredness but also significant mental exhaustion. As a result, people get insomnia (the inability to fall asleep). Anxiety is another indicator. 

There are many symptoms of mental health issues that differ from person to person and among the different kinds of issues as well. For instance, panic attacks and racing thoughts are common side effects. As a result of this mental strain, a person may experience chest aches and breathing difficulties. Another sign of poor mental health is a lack of focus. It occurs when you have too much going on in your life at once, and you begin to make thoughtless mistakes, resulting in a loss of capacity to focus effectively. Another element is being on edge all of the time.

It's noticeable when you're quickly irritated by minor events or statements, become offended, and argue with your family, friends, or co-workers. It occurs as a result of a build-up of internal irritation. A sense of alienation from your loved ones might have a negative influence on your mental health. It makes you feel lonely and might even put you in a state of despair. You can prevent mental illness by taking care of yourself like calming your mind by listening to soft music, being more social, setting realistic goals for yourself, and taking care of your body. 

Surround yourself with individuals who understand your circumstances and respect you as the unique individual that you are. This practice will assist you in dealing with the sickness successfully.  Improve your mental health knowledge to receive the help you need to deal with the problem. To gain emotional support, connect with other people, family, and friends.  Always remember to be grateful in life.  Pursue a hobby or any other creative activity that you enjoy.

Many health experts have stated that mental, social, and emotional health is an important part of overall fitness. Physical fitness is a combination of physical, emotional, and mental fitness. Emotional fitness has been recognized as the state in which the mind is capable of staying away from negative thoughts and can focus on creative and constructive tasks. 

He should not overreact to situations. He should not get upset or disturbed by setbacks, which are parts of life. Those who do so are not emotionally fit though they may be physically strong and healthy. There are no gyms to set this right but yoga, meditation, and reading books, which tell us how to be emotionally strong, help to acquire emotional fitness. 

Stress and depression can lead to a variety of serious health problems, including suicide in extreme situations. Being mentally healthy extends your life by allowing you to experience more joy and happiness. Mental health also improves our ability to think clearly and boosts our self-esteem. We may also connect spiritually with ourselves and serve as role models for others. We'd also be able to serve people without being a mental drain on them. 

Mental sickness is becoming a growing issue in the 21st century. Not everyone receives the help that they need. Even though mental illness is common these days and can affect anyone, there is still a stigma attached to it. People are still reluctant to accept the illness of mind because of this stigma. They feel shame to acknowledge it and seek help from the doctors. It's important to remember that "mental health" and "mental sickness" are not interchangeable.

Mental health and mental illness are inextricably linked. Individuals with good mental health can develop mental illness, while those with no mental disease can have poor mental health. Mental illness does not imply that someone is insane, and it is not anything to be embarrassed by. Our society's perception of mental disease or disorder must shift. Mental health cannot be separated from physical health. They both are equally important for a person. 

Our society needs to change its perception of mental illness or disorder. People have to remove the stigma attached to this illness and educate themselves about it. Only about 20% of adolescents and children with diagnosable mental health issues receive the therapy they need. 

According to research conducted on adults, mental illness affects 19% of the adult population. Nearly one in every five children and adolescents on the globe has a mental illness. Depression, which affects 246 million people worldwide, is one of the leading causes of disability. If  mental illness is not treated at the correct time then the consequences can be grave.

One of the essential roles of school and education is to protect boys’ and girls' mental health as teenagers are at a high risk of mental health issues. It can also impair the proper growth and development of various emotional and social skills in teenagers. Many factors can cause such problems in children. Feelings of inferiority and insecurity are the two key factors that have the greatest impact. As a result, they lose their independence and confidence, which can be avoided by encouraging the children to believe in themselves at all times. 

To make people more aware of mental health, 10th October is observed as World Mental Health. The object of this day is to spread awareness about mental health issues around the world and make all efforts in the support of mental health.

The mind is one of the most powerful organs in the body, regulating the functioning of all other organs. When our minds are unstable, they affect the whole functioning of our bodies. Being both physically and emotionally fit is the key to success in all aspects of life. People should be aware of the consequences of mental illness and must give utmost importance to keeping the mind healthy like the way the physical body is kept healthy. Mental and physical health cannot be separated from each other. And only when both are balanced can we call a person perfectly healthy and well. So, it is crucial for everyone to work towards achieving a balance between mental and physical wellbeing and get the necessary help when either of them falters.

Improving and maintaining health and well-being is the personal responsibility of each person. There might be a lot of activities one could undertake to contribute to their physical and mental health. For this reflective account, I chose interventions such as yoga and dieting. Yoga is popular among those who monitor the body’s health and strive for inner harmony. This ancient practice is based on a combination of physical and spiritual development. Yoga practitioners strive to grow spiritually and improve themselves. On the other hand, the body’s most vital instinct—necessary for maintaining life—is the gratification of hunger. First of all, the food we eat creates the cells and tissues that make up our entire body. Second, eating provides the body with the energy it needs to function. Therefore, dieting—including what we eat, in what quantity, when, and how—depends on our health.

Doing yoga and healthy dieting have impacted my understanding of my health. I have noticed that when I implement these activities as habits in my life, I start to notice improvements in my well-being. I feel more energetic, and my immune system becomes stronger. People who practice yoga regularly note that the body becomes strong and flexible, and the mind calms down. When I do yoga every day for a minimum of one hour, I feel my muscles are stronger, and my mind is calmer. In the past, I have suffered from high-stress levels; however, yoga helps me manage such problems. The main thing in yoga is to find harmony and peace of mind, and breathing exercises and meditation techniques help with this. Improved well-being, a sense of peace, and a positive attitude – are just a small part of the positive results that yoga gave me.

It is believed that the improvement of the body is a complex result of physical activity, mental work, and lifestyle changes. Yoga classes positively affect all life support systems of the body. The study held by Hilcove et al. (2021) showed that yoga interventions helped nurses decrease and control stress levels. Mindfulness-based yoga helped participants to prevent burnout and positively affected their well-being (Hilcove, 2021). Another research that was handled by Kim (2020) revealed that yoga intervention helps to solve problems with “chronic nonspecific lower back pain in nursing practice” (Kim, 2020, p. 7). Yoga programs are considered a tool for managing pain relief (Kim, 2020). The activity is also beneficial for the lungs and is recommended for patients with lung problems (Kupershmidt and Barnable, 2019). Thus, implementing yoga intervention in the nursing practice is an effective way to improve the well-being of the patients.

After the first weeks of classes, you can feel the benefits of yoga. It allows you to learn to feel your body, manage your health, and expand the range of your lungs. At the same time, the physical activity allows us to see quick results. Classes have practically no contraindications or age and gender restrictions. Initial data and level of preparation do not matter. Now joint lessons with children, couples, and wellness sessions for the older age category are popular. If a beginner pursues not only the goal of losing weight and getting a beautiful body but also accepting himself and his needs, learning to live in harmony with the mind and shell, then yoga will give him this.

Adding healthy dieting to yoga made me see an even bigger positive effect on my well-being. Because yoga aims to teach mindfulness, I have become more conscious of my diet. Drinking more water and cutting out junk helped improve my health conditions. The body needs to consistently consume a variety of nutrients, including proteins, carbs, fats, water, minerals, and vitamins in the right amounts and proportions. The risk of contracting certain diseases increases when specific nutrients are either insufficient or excessive. Healthy eating helps build up mental and physical vitality, enables weight maintenance without harsh restrictions, and aids in the prevention and treatment of diseases. Healthy eating and dieting are an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

Of course, the role of dieting in nursing practice can not be underestimated. Distinct types of patients with different health problems require specific diets. The study provided by Kurnia and Yulia (2021) showed that nutritional education is crucial for patients with diabetes and their families. Food affects the sugar levels in the blood, and thus, people who suffer from diabetes should pay attention to their food choices (Kurnia and Yulia, 2021). Dieting helps control many aspects of the human body and thus plays an important role in patient care. A complex relationship and interdependence exist between substances that enter the body with food. For example, calcium is needed to build and maintain bones. In turn, calcium can be absorbed in the body only in the presence of vitamin D (Riccio and Rossano, 2018). For calcium to function, phosphorus and magnesium are required; they act only in the presence of copper and zinc. Nutrition is one of the important factors of human health that provides adequate growth and development in childhood, high performance of the adult population, and active longevity of the elderly and old people.

The information I have gained from this activity will be useful for my future practice. Now, when I have explored the benefits that yoga and dieting interventions can bring, I will try to implement them when relevant. Nurses are responsible for contributing to the well-being of their patients. That is why it was highly motivational for me to analyze how specific activities affected my health and lifestyle. Moreover, these and many other interventions may demonstrate positive results systematically and properly. A person’s well-being depends on what activity they undertake in their everyday life. Both yoga and dieting interventions showed to have positive results on my health, and I hope it will be the same for my future patients.

This reflective account is relevant to the MNC code and its distinctive themes. Generally, the code includes four themes referred to prioritizing people, practicing effectively, preserving safety, and promoting professionalism and trust (NMC Code, 2022). I want to discuss effective practice and promoting professionalism and trust. For instance, yoga and dieting are related to the ‘practice effectively’ theme. When yoga is practiced regularly, it brings more results for the body and mind. Accordingly, when dieting options are made correctly, they will be more effective and beneficial for the patient’s health. ‘Promote professionalism and trust theme is also connected with the two interventions as patients should trust the process. Health care professionals should educate patients about the efficiency of the activities they implement to be aware of the purpose of these particular interventions.

How does my mental health affect my physical health?

Research shows that people with a mental health problem are more likely to have a preventable physical health condition such as heart disease.

This can be for a variety of reasons, including:

  • genetics – the genes that make it more likely that you will develop a mental health problem may also play a part in physical health problems
  • low motivation – some mental health problems or medications can affect your energy or motivation to take care of yourself
  • difficulty with concentration and planning – you may find it hard to arrange or attend medical appointments if your mental health problem affects your concentration
  • lack of support to change unhealthy behaviour – healthcare professionals may assume you’re not capable of making changes, so won’t offer any support to cut down on drinking or give up smoking, for example
  • being less likely to receive medical help – healthcare professionals may assume your physical symptoms are part of your mental illness and not investigate them further. People with a mental illness are less likely to receive routine checks (like blood pressure, weight and cholesterol) that might detect symptoms of physical health conditions earlier.

As well as this, mental health problems can come with physical symptoms. Our bodies and minds are not separate, so it’s not surprising that mental ill health can affect your body. Depression can come with headaches, fatigue and digestive problems, and anxiety can create an upset stomach, for example. Other symptoms can include insomnia, restlessness and difficulty concentrating.

Having a mental health problem doesn’t mean it’s inevitable that you will develop a physical health problem. There are things you can do to give yourself the best chance of staying physically well.

Physical activity is a great way to keep you physically healthy as well as improving your mental wellbeing. Research shows that doing exercise releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins in the brain. Even a short burst of 10 minutes brisk walking can improve your mental alertness, energy and mood.

Whether you’re tending your garden or running a marathon, exercise can significantly improve your quality of life. Finding an activity you enjoy can make you feel less stressed, more focused, and give you a sense of purpose. Eating well can improve your wellbeing and your mood. A balanced diet is one that includes healthy amounts of proteins, essential fats, complex carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water. The food we eat can influence the development, management and prevention of numerous mental health conditions including depression and dementia .

Stop smoking

Smoking has a negative impact on both mental and physical health. Many people with mental health problems believe that smoking relieves their symptoms, but these effects are only short-term. It’s never too late to quit, and there is now a lot of support available to help you give up.

Make an appointment with your GP

If you’re worried about your physical health, or you’ve been invited for a routine check or screening, make an appointment to see your GP. Waiting times will be different at different GP surgeries: ask for an emergency appointment if you need to see someone urgently.
