Experienced writing tutors? Budget-friendly? Excellent private writing tutor matching process? Check, check, and check. Learner easily meets all of the criteria and then some for an excellent online writing tutoring service . Students or parents will begin the process of finding a certified writing tutor through Learner by filling out a basic questionnaire. The answers from this questionnaire help the Learner team understand your timeline, priorities, and interests, which allows them to match you with the best tutor for you. Only 5% of the tutors who apply for this platform pass the rigorous vetting process, and each tutor in Learner’s network is highly qualified.

Learner caters to students, young learners, foreign-language speakers, and adults with various learning styles by offering private writing tutoring and group sessions. If you choose to opt for private online tutoring, then your writing instructor will develop a tail-made lesson curriculum just for you. Not only is every session recorded for later viewing, but each session also includes a valuable feedback session with the tutor and parents. This allows parents to constantly be in the know about their child’s writing process.

With a 9.9/10 average customer satisfaction rating, customer satisfaction is of the utmost priority for Learner . Customers get a full satisfaction guarantee — if they aren’t satisfied after their first session, Learner will help them find a better tutor match. The next session will then be free of charge. • Affordable
  • Full satisfaction guarantee
  • Tutors aren’t available 24/7

Bottom Line: With high-quality tutors, a budget-friendly hourly rate, an excellent tutoring matching process, and a full satisfaction guarantee, Learner easily meet all of the criteria for an excellent online writing tutoring service.

Wyzant

Wyzant is particularly well suited for those interested in improving their creative writing skills. Wyzant has various professional writing tutors that can help you with a creative writing assignment for school, or with creative writing that you are doing on your own time.

wyzant

Customers have 24/7 access to tutors. While Wyzant will not match you with the ideal tutor for you, interested parties can use the Wyzant database to search for a tutor based on the subject area, grade level, and hourly rate. While most tutors have advanced degrees and/or previous professional experience, Wyzant has no cohesive curriculum or methodology that tutors must abide by, which makes each tutoring experience vastly different across the board. It’s important to keep in mind that previous customers have stated that their experience with Wyzant is very dependent upon which tutor you choose to work with. That said, if you are not satisfied with your writing instruction, then you won’t be charged for the first hour of your lesson. Tutors also get to pick their own hourly rates, which typically range from around $35 to $70 per hour. This platform is best suited for those who need help with a one-off academic writing assignment or who require occasional assistance with essay writing. Do not sign up for this tutoring service if your goal is to develop a strong working relationship with one particular tutor.

  • Experience with tutors vastly differs
  • Not suited for long-term instruction

Bottom Line: While this online tutoring company has a wealth of creative writing in its network, it is not a beneficial service for those who want to improve and build on their writing skills long-term.

Varsity Tutors is an extensive and popular tutoring platform with over 3,000 subjects and 40,000 tutors in its network. This tutoring service originally started out as an in-person tutoring company in 2007 but has been mostly online for the last five years. Whether you want to hone basic skills or work on writing essays for your Language Arts course, Varsity Tutors has a variety of writing classes available to take your wordsmith abilities to the next level.

varsity tutors

While Varsity Tutors may have a large network, they assure their customers that they have a thorough vetting process that includes background checks and interviews. While a tutor’s previous experience, college degrees, and certifications are certainly important to Varsity Tutors, their number one priority is finding tutors who can explain information in a clear and understandable way. This company also wants to hire writing tutors who can connect with their students and form strong working relationships with them. Varsity Tutors uses a placement algorithm to match students with tutors based on a student’s schedule, learning style, learning interests, and academic goals.

  • Thorough vetting process for tutors
  • Exact pricing is only available upon request

Bottom Line: Whether you want to hone basic skills or work on creative writing techniques, Varsity Tutors has a variety of writing classes available to take your wordsmith abilities to the next level. Through their placement algorithm, Varsity Tutors is able to match students with a highly qualified, expert writing tutor.

Chegg has thousands of writing experts in its network, each with their own specialty and area of expertise. From lab reports to literary analysis to history research papers, there’s guaranteed to be a tutor that can help assist with your particular writing needs. To top that off, users can also take advantage of Chegg’s services by submitting a paper for review. Whether you have a specific question or you just want a second pair of eyes on your work, a tutor in Chegg’s network will be able to provide you with feedback within 24 hours.

Chegg Tutors

For an extra $9.95 a month, students also have the option to sign up for Chegg Writing. This learning tool includes a plagiarism detector, a free citation creation, and proofreading and grammar scans for as many writing samples as you wish to submit. Unlike many other online tutoring services, Chegg operates on a membership basis. Students will pay $14.95 a month for unlimited live lessons. That said, if you choose to sign up for this platform, you will most likely not receive instruction from the same tutor more than once, and you will not receive personalized lesson plans. Chegg should be used by independent students who require occasional assistance on homework or assignments.

  • A wealth of writing experts in its network
  • Lots of writing specific learning tools
  • Not geared towards developing student/tutor relationships
  • No customized lesson plans

Bottom Line: With thousands of writing experts in its network, and several writing-specific learning tools, Chegg is an excellent budget-friendly tutoring service. That said, this service is best used for submitting essays for review or occasional homework assistance — students will not receive tailored lesson plans or develop a working relationship with a single tutor.

As anyone who has taken the SAT or ACT knows already, writing is a significant portion of college admissions tests. While a few general courses are offered here and there, Kaplan mainly specializes in preparation for standardized tests. This premier test prep tutoring company offers both small, remote group sessions as well as private, one-on-one tutoring.

Kaplan follows a strict curriculum, which includes full-length tests and broken down, analyzed scores. While a lot of the tutoring will focus on multiple-choice preparation, Kaplan tutors will also guide tutees through the writing sections of each test. Tutors will help build upon students’ pre-existing writing skills and help them understand what review boards are looking for in essay sections.

kaplan

This platform is only for rigorous, long-term tutoring. Tutors are only of the highest quality and students will get access to extremely exclusive materials. That said, Kaplan pricing packages are very expensive. To give you an idea, a 10-hour package for the SAT costs $2,000, and a 40-hour package for the SAT costs around $4,400. A 10-hour package for the LSAT costs around $2,300, while a 40-hour package costs $4,900.

  • Very catered curriculum
  • Provides students with exclusive materials
  • Highly qualified tutors
  • Very expensive
  • Catered towards standardized test prep only

Bottom Line: If you are looking to boost your writing skills in preparation for a standardized test, it’s hard to top Kaplan ’s premier services. That said, this top-notch service does come with an expensive price tag.

Funneled with the same resources as the established and well-known Princeton Review, Tutor.com is particularly geared towards high school students who need a little helping hand with writing. Tutor.com hires a wide variety of experts, some with master’s degrees and others with Ph.Ds, who can help with anything from a book report to an admissions essay. Tutors are available 24/7, which is beneficial if you are pulling an all-nighter to meet a next-day deadline.

tutor com

This service does not do the work of matching a student with a tutor. However, on the tutor.com website, tutors are organized by category, making it easy and convenient for students to find a tutor that specializes in their niche area of interest.

Students can opt for several different pricing plans with this platform. Tutor.com offers several monthly subscription options, each with a different specified number of hours per month, as well as a monthly plan that allows for unlimited homework help. If you plan on receiving long-term instruction from this platform, you can also sign up for a six-month plan for a slightly better deal. That said, students will most likely not be able to receive instruction from the same tutor with every lesson. Students will also not receive personalized lesson plans.

  • Offers several different packages and pricing plans
  • A wide range of tutors with various specialties
  • Not ideal for long-term instruction
  • Does not do the work of matching students with tutors
  • Students do not receive personalized lesson plans

Bottom Line: Funneled with the same resources as the established and well-known Princeton Review, Tutor.com is a great go-to for high school students who need a little extra guidance with writing.

Business Writing Center

Who said online tutoring was just for students? Whether you are cranking out lengthy lab reports or drafting book proposals, writing skills are required in most business professions.

If you are looking to hone your business writing skills, Business Writing Center (BWC) is a great go-to online service for you.

business writing center

Referring to its tutoring services as “coaching” rather than traditional tutoring, this specialized tutoring company has several different packages available, depending on what type of instruction you are seeking. Individuals can sign up for one-on-one tutoring sessions with instructors that will also provide feedback on reports, proposals, and any real-life work documents they are working on. BWC also offers classes that are specially geared towards non-native English speakers. Each course costs around $395, and can last for as long as four months.

  • A niche online tutoring company for business professionals
  • Offers several different courses, including one for non-native English speakers
  • Courses are self-paced, which may not suit everyone
  • Relatively expensive

Bottom Line: If you are looking to hone your business writing skills, Business Writing Center (BWC) is a great go-to online service for you. With $395 self-paced courses, BWC can help bolster your writing skills with lab reports, business proposals, and more.

Skooli

Skooli offers tutoring in a wide range of subjects, therefore, you shouldn’t have any issues finding online writing tutors with various specialties. Unlike some of the online services that do the heavy lifting of matching you with a tutor, it is up to you to find your ideal tutor. Closely examine each tutoring profile and select a tutor that will be able to help you with your particular needs. For example, if you need help with a lab report, you may want to select a tutor with a science background. For the most part, Skooli tutors are well-vetted experts.

skooli

While you can use Skooli as a long-term tutoring platform, it’s far more cost-effective for short-term homework help and essay questions. Customers are charged by the minute at Skooli, with rates being approximately $1 per minute. This means, that if you plan on having hour-long sessions with each tutor, lessons begin to get expensive, fast. Additionally, lessons must be a minimum of 15 minutes each.

  • Cost-effective for quick homework help
  • The payment plan is not sustainable for longer lessons
  • Sessions must be a minimum of 15 mins
  • The quality of tutors widely varies

Bottom Line: With its pay-as-you-go payment plan and 24/7 access for tutors, Skooli is an ideal tutoring service for quick homework help. However, this platform is not a cost-effective option for those who want to have longer sessions with tutors.

Pearson’s Smarthinking

Pearson’s Smarthinking tutors specialize in numerous areas, but helping students improve their writing skills is one of their specialties. Along with regular homework help and writing assistance, Pearson’s Smarthinking also offers some additional writing-based services. If you want to receive feedback on either a school essay or an SAT sample essay, you have the option to submit the paper to Smarthinking for review. For an SAT essay, this will only set you back $13, while a standard essay costs around $32. Long-form essays (10 pages or longer) will cost around $42. Additionally, if you are currently applying for jobs and looking for feedback on your cover letters or resume, Pearson’s Smarthinking has also got you covered.

pearsons smarthinking

As for the writing teachers, tutors have an average of nine years of experience in their subjects, Not only have tutors received training and certification from Smarthinking, but about 90% have earned master’s degrees or Ph.D.s in their area of expertise.

  • Offers writing help for various formats

High-quality tutors

  • Can get expensive

Bottom Line: Pearson’s Smarthinking offers online tutoring in various subjects, but its writing services are what help this platform stand out from the crowd. This tutoring company can help students improve their writing skills, but also offers additional writing-based services including reviewing cover letters, personal essays, and SAT sample essays.

TutaPoint

TutaPoint is particularly geared toward helping students prepare for standardized tests including the SAT and ACT. Tutoring packages do rear on the more expensive side, starting at around $425. Each package includes three hours of online tutoring, a practice test, and a tailor-made study plan. If you want to add more hours to your plan, then package prices gradually climb in price. For example, a 10-hour package costs around $1,895. Aside from learning basic test-taking strategies and getting special help in weaker testing areas, students also have access to various study tools including quizzes and practice drills.

tutapoint

TutaPoint’s tutoring network is mainly composed of retired teachers, college professors, and teaching assistants. If your child has special needs, then TutaPoint also has tutors who have been trained to help students with any learning disabilities.

  • Includes a lot of learning tools in each package
  • For the most part, tutors have years and years of previous teaching experience
  • Caters toward students with special needs
  • Packages are expensive
  • Writing assistance is very focused on test prep

Bottom Line: If you need help preparing for SAT or ACT-specific writing, then TutaPoint is another great go-to service. Aside from tailor-made lesson plans and customized writing guidance, this pricier service also offers a handful of other helpful learning tools.

How to find the right online writing tutor for your needs

There are many factors to consider when searching for the best writing tutor for you or your child. First and foremost, consider what type of writing you need help with. Do you need help writing lab reports or research essays, or are you simply trying to improve your understanding of grammar and proper sentence structure? By figuring out what your overall writing goals are, you can compare how they align with the focus of different online tutoring services. This will make it easier to choose the best online tutoring platform for your needs.

Similarly, consider your learning style and what type of tutoring setup you want. Do you want a long-term private tutoring arrangement or would you prefer small group classes on a short-term basis? Are you most interested in occasional homework help or intensive exam preparation? One way to differentiate between online tutoring services is to see whether they specialize in long-term or on-demand tutoring. Similarly, decide whether it’s important to you to form a relationship with a specific tutor or whether you are just as happy with tutoring from a variety of instructors. If you know what you want, you can rule out tutoring platforms that don’t fit your needs and interests.

Deciding on your tutoring budget will also help you find a compatible tutor. Tutoring packages and hourly rates vary substantially from service to service. Some tutoring companies are relatively affordable, but others, especially those that offer intensive test prep courses, are much more expensive.

When you have a better idea of what you’re looking for, it’s time to narrow down your search for the best tutoring platform and online writing tutor. Keep these factors in mind to help you choose the best one:

Choose a reputable platform and double-check tutor qualifications

If you like the idea of online writing tutoring, there are numerous reputable services to choose from. We’ve included some of the best-known companies on our list. Although tutoring platforms should make an effort to verify tutor credentials, it’s always a good idea to double-check.

Ask the prospective tutor about their qualifications and their tutoring history. Before you start a tutoring program, make sure that your tutor has a good track record of helping students measurably improve their writing, whether that means raising their score on the SAT , passing English as a Second Language exams, or developing essay writing techniques that earned them good grades in their high school courses.

Get to know your tutor through ratings and interviews

Writing is arguably one of the more difficult subjects to teach, making it even more important to find the right tutor. Before you start lessons, try to get to know your tutor’s teaching style, personality, and communication skills. Some prospective clients ask for a sample lesson or query how the tutor would help with a certain piece of work, such as a persuasive essay or a short story. Within just a few minutes, you’ll probably have a sense of whether the tutor’s teaching style and level of expertise are suitable.

Checking out ratings and reviews from former students is another great way to determine whether the tutor successfully guided those students to success, though this needn’t take the place of a (virtual) meeting with the tutor. Some tutoring platforms will gladly set up an interview and will swap your tutor if you aren’t satisfied after your first session. However, you’re less likely to have this option with ad hoc services, where you pay by the minute and don’t have much say over which tutor you work with.

Ask around for writing tutor recommendations

If you’re feeling self-conscious about seeking help to improve your writing, try not to be so hard on yourself. Even though it may seem natural to some, many people find it hard to master key ideas like essay structure, using literary techniques, and writing clearly and concisely. And for those writing in their second or third language, the challenge is immense.

Whatever your situation, you’re likely to have friends, classmates, and family members who have sought help for themselves or their children with some aspect of English or language arts. Reach out to your community for recommendations and advice about tutoring. Someone may point you in the direction of a fantastic tutor (in person or online) who has made a real contribution to their writing ability and confidence.

How we chose the best online writing tutoring services

With so many online writing tutoring services available, we narrowed the options down to ten of the best to make it easier for you to choose one. We also wanted to give prospective clients a wide range of choices, such as different prices and minimum time commitments. Some of the companies on our list focus on long-term tutoring, while others are much better for occasional help with homework or intensive, short-term exam prep.

We recognize that not everyone needs help with the same kind of writing, so we’ve made sure that our list includes platforms that help with general writing skills as well as those that focus on a specific niche, such as helping young writers, ESL students, incoming college students, or business professionals. A young student learning to write for the first time has very different needs from a busy professional who wants to get better at drafting proposals, presentations, or legal documents. It only makes sense that their respective tutors should be experts at working with students of similar ages and academic levels and should structure their lessons around their specific needs.

online writing tutoring

Here are the criteria we used to select the tutoring platforms for our list:

We chose platforms that carefully check the tutors in their network to make sure they are qualified, have a lot of experience, are kind and patient, and have a teaching style that works well with online tutoring.

Customized learning plans

The best online tutoring services design their programs around the needs of the student, taking into account their age, grade level, learning style, strengths and weaknesses, academic objectives, and (if applicable) professional goals.

Flexible scheduling and frequent availability

We looked for companies that offer students the flexibility to work with their tutor at the times that suit them best, whether that’s before school, after school, in the evening, or on weekends. We included some platforms that offer pay-by-the-minute tutoring and some that focus on tutoring with a longer duration, such as for a semester or in the lead-up to an exam.

Use of technology and online educational resources

All of the companies on our list make excellent use of virtual education tools to improve the tutoring experience, keep students engaged, and prepare them for the role of technology in the real world. This might include interactive online activities, collaborative editing, digital literacy, and uploading, sending, and sharing documents and resources.

Frequent communication and helpful feedback

It’s important for parents to feel connected to their child’s tutor, so we chose platforms that prioritize communication among parents, children, and tutors. This could involve lesson recordings, progress reports, or instant messages. Likewise, tutors need to provide honest feedback and attainable targets so that their students always know exactly where they stand and how they can make meaningful progress.

Benefits of online writing tutoring

Writing is a hard skill to perfect. It’s one of the most common areas that high school and college students struggle with, and writing difficulties often extend into adulthood. Writing can be especially challenging for students who don’t speak English as their first languag e or who have special needs. And with so many types of writing, it’s that much harder to master them all. From SAT essays to lab reports, literary analyses to research papers, even after you’ve mastered one style of writing, there’s more work to be done.

That’s where writing tutors come in. Just like any skill, writing challenges can be overcome with the right tools, practice, and guidance. Tutors can teach students about the mechanics of writing, such as grammar and sentence structure. They can also give students feedback and show them how to use new formats and styles. Most importantly, tutors can help students gain confidence in their writing abilities, even if they’ve been struggling in the classroom.

While you can have a great experience working with an in-person writing tutor, here are some benefits that are unique to online writing tutors :

Convenience and flexibility

One of the aspects of online tutoring that families are most excited about is how convenient and flexible it is. While many in-person tutors offer afternoon lessons, online tutors tend to have a wider range of availability, including mornings, evenings, and weekends. Online tutoring is also a popular choice with students, as they can attend sessions from the comfort of home rather than having to spend more time at school or go to a learning center.

Affordability

The fact that online tutoring eliminates the need for tutors and students to commute has another benefit. With tutors spending less time traveling to attend sessions and having fewer overhead costs, they can offer more affordable rates. Although each tutoring service has its own pricing structure, which can vary a lot from one platform to the next, online tutoring is usually cheaper than in-person tutoring, especially for small groups. There are even programs that help low-income families pay for online writing tutoring, so students can get help no matter what their background is.

Wide range of high-quality tutors

Online writing services can connect students with tutors from all over the world. With so many tutors to choose from, it’s much easier to find one who has the relevant qualifications, expertise, and teaching style for a student’s unique needs. No matter what aspect of writing you’re hoping to improve, you’ll find an online tutor who can guide you toward better writing. Many of the best online platforms match students with tutors and make sure that the tutor has the skills needed to help students improve their writing for school, business, or other professional purposes.

Personalized learning experience

If you choose an online service that focuses on long-term tutoring, your tutor will design sessions around your unique learning goals. They’ll create lesson plans that take into account not only the topics and skills you want to master but also your specific academic strengths and weaknesses and preferred learning style. Some platforms focus on helping students who have learning challenges like dyslexia, while others offer programs for people who are learning English as a second language.

Use of educational technology

The virtual learning environment of online tutoring can help make lessons more personalized. Educational tools and resources such as live collaborative editing, screen sharing, virtual whiteboards, instant messaging, and recorded lessons can make the online learning experience even more engaging than in-person lessons. Many students respond very positively to online tutoring because they like using technology in their everyday lives as well as in their education. It’s also a great way for tutors, students, and parents to stay connected through updates, questions, and feedback.

What are online writing tutoring services?

Online writing tutoring services are virtual companies that can connect students with tutors. These companies may be tailored towards a particular demographic or style of writing, or they may be a more general tutoring platform that covers a wide range of subjects.

Who should use online writing tutoring services?

Anyone and everyone can take advantage of online writing tutoring services . More than most other skills, writing is something that students begin learning at a young age and continue to utilize throughout the rest of their lives. Whether you are struggling with a particular style of writing, or are seeking feedback on an essay or cover letter, there are online writing tutoring services catered to your particular needs.

How much do online writing tutoring services cost?

The cost of online writing tutoring services varies from service to service, as do the pricing plans. While some tutoring services will charge by the minute or hour, others will charge a monthly membership fee or include several packages to choose between.

What should you look for in online writing tutoring services?

There are many factors to consider before selecting an online tutoring service . You should look for the style of tutoring, the virtual learning tools that the service utilizes, the added benefits included in a package or membership, and the quality of the tutors in each network.

What are the pros of using online writing tutoring services?

Online tutoring is more convenient, accessible, and affordable than in-person tutoring. Not only does online tutoring provide most of the same benefits as in-person tutoring, but it’s also much easier to find a tutor that specializes in your area of interest and can cater to your learning style. Without a commute to worry about, it’s far easier to squeeze online tutoring into your busy schedule.

What are the cons of using online writing tutoring services?

Some individuals, particularly younger children or students with learning disabilities and special needs may struggle with learning online. Consider your child’s learning style before you opt for an online tutoring service . If they struggle to remain engaged or sit still for long periods of time, in-person hands-on learning may be better suited to their needs.

Not sure how to approach the common app essay or your supplemental essays.

# of qualities that all successful college essays must have

my essay tutor org

What makes a great college essay?

We have a strong understanding of how colleges evaluate your essay..

Our experience is based on:

  • “Inside” knowledge from friends and colleagues who were former admissions officers at the most selective colleges
  • In-depth analysis of hundreds of the best college essays (which are sourced from our own Ivy League tutors and not available anywhere else)
  • Tons of research & many years of successfully working with students

At the end of the day, the personal statement is all about… telling an engaging story that expresses your values and personal growth .

So how do you actually do all of this?

Our approach

If you don’t have a strong foundation, it doesn’t matter how beautifully written your essay is….

While the essay is very much a creative exercise, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a structure or certain principles you should follow:

Step 1: Brainstorming

  • Understand 7 qualities of a successful college essay
  • Multi-step brainstorming process
  • Work through 6 tips for choosing a winning topic

Step 2: Outlining

  • 5 ways to structure your college essay & identifying the best one for you
  • Outlining best practices

Step 3: Drafting & Revising

  • Multiple revisions and comprehensive edits
  • Enhance with “advanced” storytelling techniques and ensure a compelling intro/conclusion
  • Polish for style, grammar, and mechanics

Who will you be working with?

Work with storytelling experts who are highly skilled at helping students uncover their best essay..

The majority of our essay consultants are Ivy League graduates and are EXCEPTIONAL writers.

  • Hollywood screenwriters, playwrights, and authors
  • MFAs in Creative Writing and PhDs in English
  • College professors and English teachers

HOWEVER… we are fully aware that it takes more than just a strong writer to craft a great college essay.

Not only have our consultants successfully achieved admissions to top colleges themselves, but they also truly understand what colleges are looking for and are well-versed in our proprietary methodology.

Furthermore, they have the unique ability to connect with students and make them comfortable. This is a critical factor during the brainstorming and introspection phases.

7 qualities of successful college essay s

Introspective & reflective.

The most successful essays are highly introspective, full of reflections of what you’ve learned, how you view the world, and who you are.

Not used to writing about yourself? Don’t worry. Most students aren’t.

Descriptive & Engaging

Superficial descriptions in your essay will make your essay forgettable.

Incorporate imagery, emotions, perspectives, or insights to bring your reader into your story.

Be honest with yourself. Be vulnerable. Put yourself out there.

You’ll have a richer set of experiences to draw from during the brainstorming process. As a result, your essay will have more depth and be more engaging.

Unconventional & Distinct

What is unique about your essay?

If the reader can guess the rest of your essay after reading the first paragraph, you’ll want to go back to the drawing table.

Full of a Student’s Voice

Your grades, GPA, test scores, and extracurricular achievements are just numbers and facts on a page.

The college essay, on the other hand, is a chance to showcase your personality and unique way of expressing yourself.

Well-written

Don’t forget that admissions officers are also evaluating whether or not you can write at the college level.

There are different ways to improve your writing, but at the very least, make sure there are no spelling errors or grammatical mistakes.

A college essay, above all, adds meaningful value to the rest of your application.

When evaluating your draft, ask yourself whether your essay successfully showcases your voice, sheds light on your unique perspectives, and honestly conveys who you are.

How is your essay performing in these areas?

Thank You Thank You Thank You

“I GOT INTO USC!!! I don’t think I’ve ever cried from happiness so much in my life. I’m really going to Los Angeles! It feels surreal saying that.

I just want to say my deepest thanks to you. You were my mentor and my one and only helper during my college applications and I really don’t think I could’ve made it without you. I am truly so grateful for all the help you gave me. I’m not sure how to put into writing how much I appreciate everything you did to help me.

Thank you for helping me along my journey and I’m so happy I even made a new friend while I applied everywhere 🙂 I’ll stop writing now because I think I’m getting a little too existential and my keyboard is starting to get wet. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!”

B.S., Ecstatic 12th Grader 🙂

Frequently Asked Questions

“common app essay” vs “personal statement”.

When you hear the term “college essay”, it usually refers to the “Personal Statement”.

This is the most important essay because it can be reused for multiple schools.

The Personal Statement is also commonly referred to as the “Common App Essay”.

Even if you’re applying to schools that don’t accept the Common App and instead require a different application (e.g. Coalition Application, Universal College Application, UC Schools), each application will have its own version of the “Personal Statement”.

In summary… “College Essay” = “Personal Statement” = “Common App Essay”.

Additionally, each school might also require that you also submit “Supplemental” essays (e.g. “Why X School”?). These essays require a different approach.

When is the best time to start working on your college essay?

The reality is that most students will wait until the last minute.

This is not ideal for obvious reasons.

If possible, we recommend all of our families to start the process in the early summer with the goal of completing their personal statement by the end of the summer.

This timeline allows you to focus on completing the actual college applications themselves, as well as to work on the other supplemental essays (while also taking care of your other academic and extracurricular obligations).

How important is the college essay?

The college essay is simply ONE piece of the puzzle.

And while an important piece, rarely will even an AMAZING college essay make up for lackluster GPAs or test scores.

For rising seniors, there’s not much that can be changed in terms of GPA.

Standardized testing, ideally, will be done by the end of junior year as well (there should still be chances to take the tests in the fall/early winter if need be).

The college essay is usually the last remaining part of the application that you can still impact.

IF you’re targeting more selective or smaller liberal arts schools …the college essay will be VERY important.

IF you’re targeting larger state schools or less selective schools …the college essay will be LESS important.

IF your grades and test scores are below average for your target school …consider spending more effort on your essay.

Conversely, IF your grades and test scores are above average for your target school …you have a little more breathing room with regards to your essay.

IF your target school has gone test optional … then every other part of the application, including the college essay, becomes a little more important.

What is our pricing?

College Essays

feature_help.jpg

If you grow up to be a professional writer, everything you write will first go through an editor before being published. This is because the process of writing is really a process of re-writing —of rethinking and reexamining your work, usually with the help of someone else. So what does this mean for your student writing? And in particular, what does it mean for very important, but nonprofessional writing like your college essay? Should you ask your parents to look at your essay? Pay for an essay service?

If you are wondering what kind of help you can, and should, get with your personal statement, you've come to the right place! In this article, I'll talk about what kind of writing help is useful, ethical, and even expected for your college admission essay . I'll also point out who would make a good editor, what the differences between editing and proofreading are, what to expect from a good editor, and how to spot and stay away from a bad one.

Worried about college applications?   Our world-class admissions counselors can help. We've guided thousands of students to get into their top choice schools with our data-driven, proprietary admissions strategies.

What Kind of Help for Your Essay Can You Get?

What's Good Editing?

What should an editor do for you, what kind of editing should you avoid, proofreading, what's good proofreading, what kind of proofreading should you avoid.

What Do Colleges Think Of You Getting Help With Your Essay?

Who Can/Should Help You?

Advice for editors.

Should You Pay Money For Essay Editing?

The Bottom Line

What's next, what kind of help with your essay can you get.

Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing . There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of really polishing your final product.

Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you."

Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work . Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing is good editing . In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved.

Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering.

Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view.

body_landscape.jpg

Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do?

Help Brainstorm Topics

Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you.

If you're wondering how to come up with options for your editor to consider, check out our guide to brainstorming topics for your college essay .

Help Revise Your Drafts

Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers .

Revision questions should point out:

  • Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay
  • Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention
  • Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader
  • Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear

But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting—editors let authors fix the problems themselves.

Want to write the perfect college application essay?   We can help.   Your dedicated PrepScholar Admissions counselor will help you craft your perfect college essay, from the ground up. We learn your background and interests, brainstorm essay topics, and walk you through the essay drafting process, step-by-step. At the end, you'll have a unique essay to proudly submit to colleges.   Don't leave your college application to chance. Find out more about PrepScholar Admissions now:

Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision.

You may be dealing with a bad editor if they:

  • Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you
  • Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature"
  • Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you
  • Tell you what to say and how to say it
  • Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you
  • Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager

Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions.

Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing?

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line.

  • An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it.
  • An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay.
  • An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go.

body_ideas.jpg

Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader.

Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters.

Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must.

Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing).

Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's.

body_detective-2.jpg

A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job.

Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are:

  • If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished.
  • If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes.
  • If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing.

body_spill-1.jpg

What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay?

Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are good—even required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important.

On the Importance of Editing

Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College )

Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College )

On the Value of Proofreading

Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well—such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend—and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. ( Yale University )

Proofread and then ask someone else to proofread for you. Although we want substance, we also want to be able to see that you can write a paper for our professors and avoid careless mistakes that would drive them crazy. ( Oberlin College )

On Watching Out for Too Much Outside Influence

Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. ( Carleton College )

Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. ( Vanderbilt University )

body_thumbsup-3.jpg

Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self.

Parents or Close Relatives

Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you.

A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent?

One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard.

Teachers or Tutors

A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work.

Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you."

If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft.

Guidance or College Counselor at Your School

The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay.

At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application.

Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version.

Friends, Siblings, or Classmates

Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you .

Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you.

You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work.

body_goats.jpg

If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation.

First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked .

Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you.

Introduction Questions

  • Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not?
  • Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea?
  • Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through.

Essay Body Questions

  • Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words?
  • How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay?
  • Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing?
  • Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight?

Reader Response Questions

  • Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"?
  • Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well?
  • Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough?
  • Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay?
  • What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement?

Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing?

One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet.

My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service.

When to Consider a Paid Editor

In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you.

If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!)

If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see.

If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students.

If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays .

If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more.

Should You Hire an Essay Coach?

On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you.

But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you.

If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale —many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice—essay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises.

Should You Send Your Essay to a Service?

On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results.

On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay.

Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores.

Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else?

Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this!

For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this:

I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application )

For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies.

Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays—you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students.

  • You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading
  • A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed
  • A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you
  • A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting
  • All of them agree that getting light editing and proofreading is necessary
  • Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings
  • If you can't ask any of those, you can pay for college essay help, but watch out for services or coaches who over-edit you work
  • Don't buy a pre-written essay! Colleges can tell, and it'll make your whole application sound false.

How much does an essay writing tutor cost?

The price of formal essay-writing tutoring varies according to several factors, such as what you want to review and how often study sessions take place. For example, you may be charged a different rate if your student needs help finding acceptable secondary sources for a research project than you would be for help with the Analytical Writing sections of high-level standardized examinations such as the GMAT or GRE.

We also provide a live essay writing class for students who want to supplement their private instruction with something more collaborative, and we can arrange group tutoring too. Contact us using the "Get Started" tab above or by phone if you want to discuss any of these options in further detail.

How does online essay writing tutoring work?

You or your student will meet your writing coach on our exclusive Live Learning Platform: a virtual classroom that you can access on all of your favorite mobile devices. If you're concerned about the quality of instruction that can take place online, you should know that our platform is equipped with several great features to facilitate a truly hands-on study experience.

For instance, video chat capabilities allow your student to ask any questions they have about superlative adjectives or how to write narrative essays just as easily as they could in-person. Similarly, our platform's shared document editor allows your essay writing tutor to take an active role in outlining and revising each piece. Our platform even records every study session automatically, so you can go back for a refresher course at your convenience. Who knew private essay writing tutoring could feel so accessible?

Are essay writing tutors worth it?

Writing an effective essay is an art form with many distinct elements. If you need help creating a bibliography using standard MLA formatting, a private tutor can refer you to trustworthy materials detailing how to do so.

Alternatively, your instructor can share tips to help you stay on-task as you're writing instead of going off on unrelated tangents. An essay writing coach can even help you how to vary your sentence structure to keep readers engaged. Contact Varsity Tutors online or by phone for more information on how a tutor could help you or your student reach for your potential. You'll be glad you did!

We know that waiting for feedback can be nerve-racking. If you select our faster deadline option, you’ll hear from your college essay coach in 12 hours or less – including on weekends and holidays.

Yes. All our college essay coaches are subject-matter experts and can help you make decisions regarding the content of your essay. Your coach will help you make a strong case for your admission.

Our essay coaches will provide feedback on…

  • Whether your topic is appropriate and how to strengthen it
  • Whether your essay demonstrates positive traits and authenticity
  • Whether the narrative flows smoothly and grabs the reader’s attention
  • How to dig deeper and show self-reflection and insight
  • What content is missing and should be added
  • What content is weak and should be removed
  • How to shorten your essay to meet a word count limit

However, we will never…

  • Write or rewrite content for you
  • Research or fact-check your essay’s content

If you have any questions, feel free to email [email protected].

When you submit your essay to our College Essay Editing & Coaching service, you’ll be asked to indicate what type of content feedback you would like to receive. You can choose from three options:

Dig deep and challenge me

Give me the standard treatment

Tread lightly

Whichever option you choose, you’ll receive in-depth content feedback from your essay coach. However, the type of feedback your essay coach provides may differ, and the option you should choose depends on what outcome you want from the review. You can always elaborate on what type of feedback you want in your note to your essay coach.

Learn more about the three options below.

Choose from three options

If you choose this option, we’ll challenge you to write the best possible essay – no content suggestions are off-limits, including reorienting your topic or reframing your story. Students who choose this option aren’t afraid to go back to the drawing board if it’ll increase their chances of getting accepted. You may have to roll up your sleeves and do some more work on your essay, but your essay will be much stronger because of it.

Select this option if your priority is to have the best possible essay, even if it requires some extra work on your side.

We’ll strike a balance between “dig deep and challenge me” and “tread lightly.” We may suggest changes to your structure and narrative, including removing weak content, elaborating on certain sections, and adding content to strengthen your arguments. You may have to rework sentences and paragraphs, but we won’t suggest major content changes.

With this option, we’ll focus on improving your essay in a way that requires little additional work from you. We’ll provide you with targeted suggestions for how to refine your essay’s structure and narrative, but we will work within your current structure and topic. While you may have to make a few tweaks here and there, we’ll aim to return you a polished draft that’s ready to be submitted to your chosen colleges.

Select this option if you are fairly satisfied with your essay and don’t want to make major changes or if you have limited time to revise.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do college application essays still matter.

When reviewing college applications, admissions officers see a lot of statistics—test scores, GPA, class rank, etc. Admissions officers can infer a lot of things about you from these items, but these stats don’t effectively show who you are as a person. For this reason, essays are an important component of your application. Compelling essays showcase your writing skills, creativity, and reveal things about you that may show admissions staff that you’re a good fit for a specific college.

Who can help me with writing my essay?

A college essay tutor or editor can help students build a compelling essay that aligns with their college admissions goals. At KD, our college counseling team helps in a variety of ways: brainstorming topics, finding their voice, shaping a story, correcting grammar and spelling mistakes, rewriting for other colleges, and much more.

How many words does my essay need to be?

Word count for personal statements and supplemental essays can vary from college to college. However, several U.S. colleges will accept the Common App®, which recommends 400-600 words for the personal statement (sometimes called the general college application essay). Supplemental essays are typically shorter but can vary by college. When applying, follow directions as closely as possible for each application to maximize your admissions odds.

What format do college application essays use?

Your college application essays will not follow the same formal structure that is expected with high school research papers or persuasive essays. In other words, you won’t need to come up with a thesis and support it with evidence. Instead, personal statements typically tell a story in a creative way. Students don’t often encounter this type of creative writing with their high school assignments, which is why many students find it quite challenging.

KD’s college counseling team is well-versed in teaching students how to craft compelling college admissions essays, and we’ve helped hundreds of students use the essays to strengthen their applications.

What do I write in a personal statement?

A student’s personal statement should tell a story that only he or she can tell. In other words, it needs to reveal something unique about the student’s experience that connects to the chosen essay prompt. With that being said, it’s typically a challenge to do this in a unique way, and there are certain topics that students should avoid.

Read more about choosing a college essay topic , and if you need additional help, consider signing up for a college counseling program .

How do I make my essay stand out?

Our advice is don’t play it safe. Be real. Be yourself. Finding your own unique voice and using that to tell a story about yourself is typically the best move when it comes to writing a good personal statement. Of course, that is easier said than done. Working with a college essay tutor can help guide you in the right direction. Most admissions essays sound like thousands of other admissions essays, and our experienced college counseling team staff can tell you which topics are generic and which align best with your application.

For more advice, read about these steps for how to write a powerful college essay .

How much do college essay consultants charge?

The cost of working with a college essay consultant or editor varies depending on a student’s needs. Families can choose to pay by the hour for one-on-one help or purchase a program that guides students through the entire college application process. For a more accurate description of pricing, explore KD’s college counseling program options or sign up for a free consultation to discuss specific needs with a member of our college counseling team.

When should I start writing my college essays?

Many students start working on their application essays during summer or fall of senior year, but some students begin as early as spring semester of 11th grade. However, there are many factors that may prevent a student from starting at that time, such as extracurricular involvement, a challenging course load, admissions testing, etc. But remember, college applications are time-consuming, and it takes a lot of work to build one that stands out.

To find out when is the best time to start, families can schedule a free consultation to discuss individual admissions goals with our team.

“I shifted toward taking practice tests and going to workshops because I felt those were the best ways to apply the concepts (I was) learning in class. Searching for My Mom, and the History of La Puente’s ‘Little Watts’

Greenberry, where she taught for decades, helped forge today’s multi-racial san gabriel valley.

my essay tutor org

After a photo of her mother arrived in the mail, scholar Gilda L. Ochoa sought to understand more of her mother’s past—and came across a local history of Black-Latino solidarity in La Puente. Top left: Envelope from 2022 containing a photograph of the author’s mom, Francesca Ochoa. Bottom left: Francesca’s homeroom class photos, 1972-1973. Middle photo: Francesca standing at Sparks Middle School circa 1970. Right: Sparks yearbook cover, 1970-1971. Photos courtesy of author.

by Gilda L. Ochoa | August 15, 2024

I lost my mom to COVID in February 2021. She died alone, after spending 10 excruciating days in the hospital. A year after her death, a white envelope with no return address arrived in my Pomona College mailbox. Inside was a photo of my mom from the early 1970s.

In the photo, she is standing between two corridors of Sparks Middle School’s brick campus in La Puente, where she taught until she retired in 2008. She smiles gently, with her arms by her side. Her hair is long and straight, and she is wearing a sleeveless dress. She looks so young.

She was gone, and there were so many things I couldn’t ask her. For years, as a researcher and resident, I wrote about La Puente’s Mexican community and its fight for educational justice. My mom’s death—and that precious photo—made me consider new questions about the past. I began wondering about Greenberry, East San Gabriel Valley’s first Black suburban neighborhood, sometimes called “Little Watts.” Some of my mom’s early students lived there. I first heard about this neighborhood from her, but still knew next to nothing about it.

I wanted to be near my mom, and I wanted to learn Greenberry’s history. I began reaching out to some of the students she taught in the 1970s, and digging through yearbooks, newspaper articles, church records, and city council and school board minutes. I learned that Black residents in La Puente, so often forgotten, challenged multiple forms of racism. At times, they found common cause with Mexican Americans and other allies, including my Sicilian American mom. Indeed, Greenberry and its now-hidden history of activism helped forge today’s multi-racial San Gabriel Valley.

My family’s history, and specifically my mom’s early years at Sparks, intersected with Greenberry’s growth and its residents’ fight for equality. First-generation college graduates committed to social justice, my parents returned to La Puente—the multi-racial blue-collar city where their Sicilian and Nicaraguan immigrant parents lived—to become junior high school teachers. In the early 1970s, they rented a house on Evanwood Avenue, less than a mile south of Greenberry.

Pushed out of South Central Los Angeles by urban renewal, eminent domain, and the 1965 Watts uprising, Black families, some originally from the South and Midwest, moved to Greenberry in the 1960s. Newly suburbanized La Puente had relatively affordable homes, so Black families bought there and created a thriving community. White real estate agents, however, sought to preserve all-white neighborhoods. Fueled by racist beliefs that Black residents would lower home values, they steered Black families south of Francisquito Avenue into an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County just outside the then-white middle-class city of West Covina. Greenberry Drive led to the enclave’s three main blocks—Greenberry, Glenshaw, and Evanwood.

Former residents fondly describe late midcentury Greenberry as a “village.” Black families integrated existing churches, and Black pastors established new ones. Black women hosted parties and games of bid whist and dominos. The community discussed issues that impacted the village and in 1964, frustrated with ongoing discrimination, established the La Puente-West Covina branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). They fought segregated housing in West Covina, and curriculum tracking and IQ testing in schools.

Children who grew up in Greenberry went to Sparks, where my mom taught Spanish and language arts to the area’s Black, Mexican, white, and few Asian American students. She wanted students to leave feeling better about themselves than when they entered. During Mom’s Zoom memorial, former student and Greenberry resident Keith Williams recalled, “The thing I valued most from Ms. Francesca Ochoa is the way she always finished her Spanish class, ‘Que tengas un buen día. Have a nice day.’ She showed us that she cared.”

Living in the school district where my parents taught, the lines between work and home often blurred. My mom’s 1970s students told me they occasionally dropped by our home to make the 10-minute walk to school with Ms. Ochoa. Some even remembered hearing toddler-me crying in the background.

Shortly after Mom arrived at Sparks, the local NAACP allied with the La Puente-area Organization of Mexican American Communities and La Raza Unida Party to fight police brutality and to increase the number of Black and Chicana/o educators. They pushed for Chicano and Black Studies classes, and in 1972, demanded that the school district make one year of Chicano and Black Studies a graduation requirement for all high school students. My mother taught Chicano studies for several years.

As I learned more about Greenberry and its history of Black activism, I found my mother in the historical record. Lionel J. Brown came up often in my research: a president of the area NAACP, an organizer against police violence, and a teacher who advocated for, and then chaired, a council to address racial discrimination in the school district. Through school board minutes, I discovered that my mom and Mr. Brown participated together in a multi-day workshop in 1974 titled “Different Aspects of Mexican Culture.”

I was eager to find Mr. Brown, and I looked for him at his old address. The owner told me Mr. Brown lost his home to foreclosure in the early 1980s; he stored some of Mr. Brown’s items for a few years, but never saw him again. This was the closest I came to finding Lionel Brown. I was overcome with sadness—a sense of loss thinking about how he was pushed out of his home and community, and a sense of loss reflecting on how his labor to improve our area is unknown to too many.

Almost none of the Black families in Greenberry remain today. In the late 1970s, many of the neighborhood youth left for the military, college, or work. Priced out of the area and able to purchase newer and larger homes further east, young families went to the Inland Empire; their parents, like mine, passed away. I spoke with 65-year-old Ethel Smith, who lived in Greenberry from 1969 to 1976, and recently visited the neighborhood, hoping to reconnect with old memories. “It’s sad,” she grieved, “I went through Greenberry to reminisce, and I can’t remember people whose houses I’ve been to. I can’t remember where they lived.”

But relationships endure, even as the community is now physically dispersed. Greenberry’s former residents have met for yearly reunions since 2012. “How many communities from the ’70s—communities not families—get together once a year?” Keith Williams marveled when I visited him as part of my research into the neighborhood. “I don’t know of any communities that have such an interwoven connection with one another,” he reflected. The seeds that the original residents planted, Keith observed, have connected the former Greenberry residents’ kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.

Recovering local histories of placemaking, like Greenberry’s, teaches us about our interrelated and unequal pasts, and about the times that people have united for change. Researching Greenberry’s past has been part of my own remembering—a way to stay connected with my mom, honor the relationships she maintained, and hold onto the love she conveyed. It has exposed interconnected and transgenerational relationships and on-going struggles for justice.

For all of this, I’m grateful to former Greenberry residents. I hope to ensure more people learn about this past, and the community’s work—for them, for my mom, and ultimately for us all.

Don’t Buy the AI Hype, Learning Expert Warns

Generative artificial intelligence can save educators time, help personalize learning, and potentially close achievement gaps. That’s what artificial intelligence experts have said when they talk about the technology’s potential to transform education.

But not everyone agrees. Open-ended responses to an EdWeek Research Center survey conducted in the spring showed that many educators are skeptical of the technology.

The reality is that AI has its limits. For instance, it could produce inaccurate or biased responses based on faulty data it draws from. Many districts and states have created or are in the process of creating guidelines for how to incorporate AI into education, taking into account that it’s not a perfect tool. The Los Angeles school district has even become a cautionary tale for what not to do in harnessing AI for K-12 education .

Benjamin Riley, the founder and CEO of think tank Cognitive Resonance , argues that schools don’t have to give in to the hype just because the technology exists. (Riley was previously the founder of Deans for Impact, a nonprofit working to improve teacher training.)

Cognitive Resonance on Aug. 7 released its first report titled “ Education Hazards of Generative AI .”

In a phone interview with Education Week, Riley discussed the report and his concerns about using AI in education.

The interview has been edited for brevity and clarity.

Could you explain why you don’t think it’s accurate to say AI is the most important technological development in human history?

Benjamin Riley

It’s good to come back to what a large language model really is. It’s a prediction device. It takes text that you type in and it predicts what text it should put back out to you. The way it does that is purely by statistical correlations between associations of words. What’s remarkable about it as a technology is that process and that ability that we have now feels superconversational. It feels like you can talk to it about anything and, in a sense, you can. There’s no limit to the range of things it can say back to you in response to text you put into it. But that’s all it can do.

It’s not thinking. It’s not reasoning. It’s not capable of understanding that you have a mind and a life and ideas, you might have misconceptions. It doesn’t understand or have any capacity to do any of that. The computer was a huge deal. Will AI sit alongside the computer as a development in our society? I don’t know, but I certainly don’t think we’re at a point right now that the tool, as it exists today, is even in the conversation of things like fire or the printing press in terms of social impact.

What’s your biggest concern about AI use in education?

Top of my list is using [AI tools] to tutor children. They’re absolutely not going to be effective at that and they might actually be harmful at that. We’re already starting to get some empirical evidence of this. Some researchers at Wharton published a study recently of a randomized control trial where high school math students using ChatGPT learned less than their peers who had no access to it during the time of the study. That’s completely predictable because what the tool does is automate cognition for you. The fact that when you lean on it to do your work, it means you’re doing less effortful thinking, which means you’re learning less.

One of the things that’s particularly frustrating me about the education hype around AI right now is that, in other dimensions, we’re starting to see how technology has had real harms on social cohesion and solidarity. Our politics are polarized. Democracy is at risk in many countries. All of these things, I think, are interconnected. We’re starting to be dimly aware of that, and yet, here comes a tool that just throws more fuel onto the technological fire of society. People really need to stop and think about this. The thing that frustrates me the most is people are just saying, ‘Oh, it’s inevitable, so we have to get on board.’ It absolutely is not. We can make choices.

People say AI is the future, that students will use it in their careers, so we need to teach them how to use it. Do you agree with that?

There are a couple of ways to think about that. How much of the school system right now is oriented to teach kids how to use a computer? Is that really something that we spend a ton of time in our education system sort of focusing on? I would say that no, we don’t. Do kids use computers in school? Yes. Is there a computer lab that they might be accessing? Sure. Are there computer science classes ? Yeah, but only a few take them. This technology just becomes part of the fabric of our existence. Something that is undeniably huge as a technological development, which is the creation of a computer, hasn’t really changed a lot of our educational practices. So I’m not sure why we need to assume that AI should be treated differently.

Is there anything you think schools can use generative AI for?

Once you understand the limitations of generative AI, you can make use of it in ways that mitigate the hazards and the harms that may result. Once you understand that it’s just a statistical, next-word prediction engine, you don’t treat the guidance that it gives you as sacrosanct or some knowledgeable search engine that thought deeply about what you were asking and came back with the best answer.

So a teacher says, “Give me a lesson plan for this Friday, 60 minutes about this topic.” There might still be some stuff in that [answer] that has problems, but the teacher has their intelligence. They have their know-how and experience, and they can look at that lesson plan and then decide how much of it they want to use or not. That’s fine. I don’t have a problem with that.

The other area that I know has been positive and makes sense given the nature of the technology is creating materials for English learners . That’s playing to the strong suit of these models. They’re language models. So if what you need is translation between languages, they’re pretty good at that.

Many experts are calling for AI literacy in schools. Is that something you think is important?

It depends what you mean by AI literacy . What there is a lot of right now are efforts that purport to be about AI literacy, that are essentially trying to teach you how to use the tool, how to write a good prompt. That’s not what I mean by AI literacy.

I want people to be critical thinkers about this technology. [At the] operational level: how it does what it does and why you cannot trust it to say things that we humans would consider true. There are so many ethical issues: the environmental costs it takes to produce it, the ways in which it replicates bias that exists in society.

I want to [emphasize] having a better understanding of how we humans think and learn from each other, elevating that, and making efforts to foster AI literacy.

My wife isn't 'just' a stepmom to my son. He sees her as his other mom.

  • My wife has been in my son's life since he was 6 years old.
  • She has taken on a parental role, stepping in whenever I need extra help.
  • Even though she's his stepmom, my son considers her his other mom.

Insider Today

After Vice President Kamala Harris announced she was running for president, one criticism lobbed against her was that she is not a parent because she has never given birth to children. But she is the stepmother to her husband Doug Emhoff's two children.

Like Harris, my wife is a stepmother to my son.

I am no longer in a relationship with his father and have been in a new relationship for four years. My wife came into my son's life when he was 6 years old and quickly stepped into a parental role. It was a role she enthusiastically took on.

Although she didn't give birth to my son, my wife is absolutely his second mother.

My son and wife's relationship started friendly

My wife didn't immediately take an authoritative role or force him to treat her like a parent. At first, she was more like a grown-up friend — someone he knew he needed to respect, but someone who would take him on drives to get ice cream or let him pretend to drive her car while I was inside the grocery store.

Related stories

I was worried about parenting with another person all the time. As the primary parent, I wasn't used to dividing parenting duties . My wife was aware of that and always deferred to me as the primary parent.

But the bond between my son and my wife was instant. He had never met someone I was dating before, but he liked her immediately.

My wife has taken on more responsibility as a stepmom

Over the last four years, she's taken on more parental responsibility but never tried to act like she was more of a parent than myself or my son's father. She is a bonus mom, someone there to kiss him goodnight , help him with his homework, and love him unconditionally.

During the pandemic, my wife volunteered to take the lead in helping my son with virtual school so I could focus on work. She created a schedule for him, made him lunch, and ensured he kept up with assignments. When the playgrounds opened, she would take him to play, armed with a backpack full of whatever was needed.

I have gone on several overnight trips , leaving the two of them alone together. My son doesn't even call or text me when I'm gone because he's having so much fun hanging out with my wife. I never have to worry about him; I know my wife will make sure he takes a bath and goes to bed on time.

There are days when I will ask her to tag in and do the bedtime routine because I'm working or want a break, and she does it without question. My son knows that if he needs something, he doesn't have to come to me all the time.

Seeing my wife willingly step into a parental role with my son has strengthened our relationship. I knew I loved her almost immediately after we met, but seeing how my son responded to her made me more secure in my decision.

Sometimes, she still refers to him as mine, and I always remind her that she's his mom, too. We do everything as a team: school meetings, performances, birthday parties . Everyone knows us as his two moms, and there's no one else I could imagine doing this with.

My son now sees my wife as the missing piece to our family puzzle. He proudly claims her as his other mom.

"You're my mom too," my son will say when my wife calls herself his stepmom. He made that decision. My wife never wanted to force a close relationship on him, but he pushed for it.

Media has warped the perception of stepmoms

Popular media depictions of stepmoms are largely negative. The common trope is that they're evil.

For example, you have characters like Meredith Blake in the Lindsay Lohan version of "The Parent Trap," the Baroness von Schraeder in " The Sound of Music ," and, of course, the prototype: Cinderella's Evil Stepmother.

These women are always seen as temptresses who come in and seduce the father into marrying them before revealing they intend to get rid of his daughter so that she will be the only woman in his life.

Maybe there are stepmoms out there who fit this description, but by and large, stepmoms are there to be whoever their step kids want them to be.

I know that's exactly the role my wife plays, and my son and I are all the more lucky for it.

We, the APA Style team, are not robots. We can all pass a CAPTCHA test , and we know our roles in a Turing test . And, like so many nonrobot human beings this year, we’ve spent a fair amount of time reading, learning, and thinking about issues related to large language models, artificial intelligence (AI), AI-generated text, and specifically ChatGPT . We’ve also been gathering opinions and feedback about the use and citation of ChatGPT. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and shared ideas, opinions, research, and feedback.

In this post, I discuss situations where students and researchers use ChatGPT to create text and to facilitate their research, not to write the full text of their paper or manuscript. We know instructors have differing opinions about how or even whether students should use ChatGPT, and we’ll be continuing to collect feedback about instructor and student questions. As always, defer to instructor guidelines when writing student papers. For more about guidelines and policies about student and author use of ChatGPT, see the last section of this post.

Quoting or reproducing the text created by ChatGPT in your paper

If you’ve used ChatGPT or other AI tools in your research, describe how you used the tool in your Method section or in a comparable section of your paper. For literature reviews or other types of essays or response or reaction papers, you might describe how you used the tool in your introduction. In your text, provide the prompt you used and then any portion of the relevant text that was generated in response.

Unfortunately, the results of a ChatGPT “chat” are not retrievable by other readers, and although nonretrievable data or quotations in APA Style papers are usually cited as personal communications , with ChatGPT-generated text there is no person communicating. Quoting ChatGPT’s text from a chat session is therefore more like sharing an algorithm’s output; thus, credit the author of the algorithm with a reference list entry and the corresponding in-text citation.

When prompted with “Is the left brain right brain divide real or a metaphor?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that although the two brain hemispheres are somewhat specialized, “the notation that people can be characterized as ‘left-brained’ or ‘right-brained’ is considered to be an oversimplification and a popular myth” (OpenAI, 2023).

You may also put the full text of long responses from ChatGPT in an appendix of your paper or in online supplemental materials, so readers have access to the exact text that was generated. It is particularly important to document the exact text created because ChatGPT will generate a unique response in each chat session, even if given the same prompt. If you create appendices or supplemental materials, remember that each should be called out at least once in the body of your APA Style paper.

When given a follow-up prompt of “What is a more accurate representation?” the ChatGPT-generated text indicated that “different brain regions work together to support various cognitive processes” and “the functional specialization of different regions can change in response to experience and environmental factors” (OpenAI, 2023; see Appendix A for the full transcript).

Creating a reference to ChatGPT or other AI models and software

The in-text citations and references above are adapted from the reference template for software in Section 10.10 of the Publication Manual (American Psychological Association, 2020, Chapter 10). Although here we focus on ChatGPT, because these guidelines are based on the software template, they can be adapted to note the use of other large language models (e.g., Bard), algorithms, and similar software.

The reference and in-text citations for ChatGPT are formatted as follows:

  • Parenthetical citation: (OpenAI, 2023)
  • Narrative citation: OpenAI (2023)

Let’s break that reference down and look at the four elements (author, date, title, and source):

Author: The author of the model is OpenAI.

Date: The date is the year of the version you used. Following the template in Section 10.10, you need to include only the year, not the exact date. The version number provides the specific date information a reader might need.

Title: The name of the model is “ChatGPT,” so that serves as the title and is italicized in your reference, as shown in the template. Although OpenAI labels unique iterations (i.e., ChatGPT-3, ChatGPT-4), they are using “ChatGPT” as the general name of the model, with updates identified with version numbers.

The version number is included after the title in parentheses. The format for the version number in ChatGPT references includes the date because that is how OpenAI is labeling the versions. Different large language models or software might use different version numbering; use the version number in the format the author or publisher provides, which may be a numbering system (e.g., Version 2.0) or other methods.

Bracketed text is used in references for additional descriptions when they are needed to help a reader understand what’s being cited. References for a number of common sources, such as journal articles and books, do not include bracketed descriptions, but things outside of the typical peer-reviewed system often do. In the case of a reference for ChatGPT, provide the descriptor “Large language model” in square brackets. OpenAI describes ChatGPT-4 as a “large multimodal model,” so that description may be provided instead if you are using ChatGPT-4. Later versions and software or models from other companies may need different descriptions, based on how the publishers describe the model. The goal of the bracketed text is to briefly describe the kind of model to your reader.

Source: When the publisher name and the author name are the same, do not repeat the publisher name in the source element of the reference, and move directly to the URL. This is the case for ChatGPT. The URL for ChatGPT is https://chat.openai.com/chat . For other models or products for which you may create a reference, use the URL that links as directly as possible to the source (i.e., the page where you can access the model, not the publisher’s homepage).

Other questions about citing ChatGPT

You may have noticed the confidence with which ChatGPT described the ideas of brain lateralization and how the brain operates, without citing any sources. I asked for a list of sources to support those claims and ChatGPT provided five references—four of which I was able to find online. The fifth does not seem to be a real article; the digital object identifier given for that reference belongs to a different article, and I was not able to find any article with the authors, date, title, and source details that ChatGPT provided. Authors using ChatGPT or similar AI tools for research should consider making this scrutiny of the primary sources a standard process. If the sources are real, accurate, and relevant, it may be better to read those original sources to learn from that research and paraphrase or quote from those articles, as applicable, than to use the model’s interpretation of them.

We’ve also received a number of other questions about ChatGPT. Should students be allowed to use it? What guidelines should instructors create for students using AI? Does using AI-generated text constitute plagiarism? Should authors who use ChatGPT credit ChatGPT or OpenAI in their byline? What are the copyright implications ?

On these questions, researchers, editors, instructors, and others are actively debating and creating parameters and guidelines. Many of you have sent us feedback, and we encourage you to continue to do so in the comments below. We will also study the policies and procedures being established by instructors, publishers, and academic institutions, with a goal of creating guidelines that reflect the many real-world applications of AI-generated text.

For questions about manuscript byline credit, plagiarism, and related ChatGPT and AI topics, the APA Style team is seeking the recommendations of APA Journals editors. APA Style guidelines based on those recommendations will be posted on this blog and on the APA Style site later this year.

Update: APA Journals has published policies on the use of generative AI in scholarly materials .

We, the APA Style team humans, appreciate your patience as we navigate these unique challenges and new ways of thinking about how authors, researchers, and students learn, write, and work with new technologies.
