Education System’s SWOT Analysis Essay

Introduction

The current reform aimed at the replacement of the federally mandated Elementary and Secondary Education Act, including the passing of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), is aimed at the weaknesses of its predecessor – the No Child Left Behind Act. However, the acceptance of the act is not uniform, with some experts pointing to potential gaps in the reform. The current paper aims at analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the learning and assessment process using a SWOT framework and providing the rationale for the identified strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

The strongest regulatory advantage of the new act is the increased flexibility of the new system where federal authority has limited opportunity to hold schools accountable for achievement (Understood.org, n.d.). The federal government also cannot influence the adoption of common core state standards. Such a shift of authority enables localized decision-making and grants the possibility to adjust the educational programs to the needs of specific demographics.

However, the wording of the act leaves some loopholes that introduce limited federal authority, such as the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that is approved on a federal level and is used to determine the technical education standards (Truth in American Education, 2015). It should also be mentioned that the transparency of the act’s adoption lacks the necessary transparency to the point where it must be adopted before appropriate scrutiny can be applied (Wong, 2015).

The economic aspect of the program is also subject to controversy. The introduction of the preschool development grants opens up significant opportunities for the population segment that lacked resources to actualize the potential of their children. Increased funding is also beneficial for the literacy educational grant program expected to consistently improve student’s academic performance (Morin, n.d.).

However, the act also provides increased funding to private investors, which removes a certain proportion of resources from the educational establishments. More importantly, the authorization of appropriations for fiscal years 2017-2020 will result in a 2 percent increase in spending authority each year. While the expenditures are expected to remain within the allocated budget, the outcomes of such a program cannot be conclusively proven, which essentially creates a scenario of the ineffective allocation of funds (US Department of Education, 2015).

The changes in the process of evaluation of the academic achievement of ESSA were intended to address the inadequately narrow focus of performance that was previously derived from the test scores on math and reading. The inclusion of several important factors such as safety of the school environment, absenteeism data, and additional academic measures chosen by state authorities are expected to provide a more comprehensive image of the organization’s accountability. While the school quality factors play a certain role in the new system, the priority is reserved for academic factors. Nevertheless, it should be pointed out that the inclusion of such non-academic data introduces the possibility of bias as it creates the risk of inadequate assessment.

Overall, it is evident that the learning and assessment process resulting from the reformation of the No Child Left Behind Act addresses the key weaknesses of the federally-mandated ESEA. Some of the decisions, such as the discontinuation of the super subgroups, can be considered definitively successful in reaching their goals. However, others, such as the increased spending authority and the indirect influence of the federal government (e.g. through alignment with technical education standards), can result in additional financial challenges.

A major weakness in our education system: students don’t know their strengths.

Students can spend 12 years in school (even more) and not know what they’re good at.

While they have hopefully mastered academics such as reading, math, and science, they likely have spent little to no time studying their own natural talents and strengths during that time. This is a major gap in our education system.

There has been a plethora of research on the development of individual strengths and talents and their use in the workplace, mainly by Gallup. The company had identified 34 different strengths, or ways or thinking and relating. Strengths are different from skills, such as learning to drive a car. Strengths are based on natural abilities we are born with, and through development, help us achieve high performance in that area.

Gallup data has shown that at times almost 70 percent of the world’s workplace is disengaged with their work. They are not enjoying what they do and doing just enough to keep their job. This has huge financial costs for the corporate world but also greatly impacts people’s sense of well-being.

What has the biggest impact of workplace engagement?

When people use their top strengths and are appreciated for those strengths, engagement increases.

That information only should encourage the education system (and those who influence it) to embed strengths training into the k-12 curriculum. From a young age, students should be exploring and identifying their strengths and need opportunities to use those strengths during the school day.

What does this look like in the classroom?

Students could engage in project-based learning, feeding their strengths in the process. Working within a team of classmates, a student who is strong in “ideation” that is creatively coming up with novel ideas could brainstorm some possibilities for the project’s design. A second student with strong communication skills could volunteer to craft a PowerPoint to share their learning and lead the presentation to the class. A student with strong organizing skills might serve as the groups’ “general manager” while another talented in strategic thinking could pinpoint the best route to complete project tasks.

Furthermore, students could appreciate and recognize each other’s strengths during or after the project.

The idea of strengths training could also be situated in career development exploration as students hit the higher grades. Students could get help in matching their strengths to different careers.

The fact that students generally don’t have time to explore their strengths during their academic career—and begin harnessing those strengths—just doesn’t add up. If we want a engaged, productive workforce, workers who are fulfilled and tapping their potential, we must start investing early in their strengths.

The public education sys­tem in the U.S. has served this nation well. Today and in the future, it must meet un­precedented challenges. How­ever, arguments about whether the per­formance of our students has declined over time miss the point. The 1990 Olds­mobile was better than any Olds made be­fore. But was it good enough to meet worldwide competition in 1990? A simi­lar question faces U.S. education: Are we good enough to stand up to worldwide competition?

The time is right to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the U.S. public edu­cation system. We need to build on its strengths and shore up its weaknesses. We know more than ever about how to do this, but serious questions remain about the resources we are willing to de vote to the task and about our political will to get the job done.

In order to develop an effective strategy for Sri Lanka it is key to contemplate the origins of the conflict in order to assess the most efficient type of intervention required in the future. At first glance, the Sri Lanka civil war is an ethnic-religious conflict between the Sinhalese Buddhist and the Tamils Hindus that can be described as a “clash of civilizations” (Novelli, 2008). In the mid 18th century with the British rule, Tamils considered with better education were introduced into government functions of the island generating further tensions as Sinhalese people see themselves as the original inhabitants of the island and Sri Lanka as a holy Buddhist land. Tamils are seen with suspicion due to the large community of Tamils in India. Another elements in the conflict are the “structural inequalities” (Novelli, 2008) between Tamils and Sinhalese that were added to the conflictive scenario when Tamils of lower caste were brought in as labour for the tea plantations. This understanding of the Sri Lankan conflict helps to articulate and balance the best types of interventions and strategies. For example, while “educational policy intervention” should naturally be “targeted at addressing the cultural obstacles and differences that divide ‘civilizational’ groups” to address cultural unbalances and curricula; an educational policy that brings all the experience and programs used in education and poverty it is also needed to address the consequences of more than 30 years of civil war on the economy and the population in general (Novelli, 2008).

The strengths and weaknesses in the education system in various countries and its myriad impacts have always been a controversial topic. It is a widely held view that the government should be held responsible for the quality of the nation’s education system as its direct impacts are inextricably connected. I will elaborate the strengths and weaknesses with examples throughout this essay.

Notably, there are numerous strengths in the education system in Singapore. The most apparent one would be the strict and intensive curriculum and teaching methods that ensure students have a thorough understanding of the subjects. In addition, the government made education very accessible by providing subsidies in school fees. A survey conducted on Asian students showed that Singapore has the highest percentage of educated citizens and the students indeed excelled in more fields of studies than their Asian counterparts. Throughout my school years, the intensive teaching methods have indubitably helped me to achieve my masters degree.

However, the education system is not without its weakness. Substantial number of people criticize that the curriculum lacked in aspects which promote and foster creativity among students. This is due to sparsity of arts subjects being taught in school and the lack of interest among students. Conceding a point, a survey asserted that parents are convinced that there are barely any creative jobs in the industry after the students are to graduate from an art school. Consequently, Singaporean students often lack the critical creative skills which are the prerequisites of almost any jobs these days.

To recapitulate the above discussion, while the strengths in Singapore’s education system is apparent, the drawbacks are too hard to ignore. Hence, I firmly believe that the government should focus on facilitating creativity among students from a young age through education.
