EXPLORING PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE TO FACILITATE HEALING OF DRUG ADDICTS IN THE DESIGN OF REHABILITATION CENTRE, KADUNA

Profile image of Salman Abdul-One

Drug addiction is a serious menace to our society that has afflicted a large majority of youth in Kaduna State, Nigeria, and the world at large. Though not an active preventive measure, rehabilitation is an integral part of the fight against drug addiction. Unfortunately, the rehabilitation centres in Kaduna serve more as detention centres. This problem is beyond the practice of the process of rehabilitation, but it even extends to the buildings used to house and administer the necessary treatment of this menacing element of our society. This research reviewed relevant literature on the topic, which revealed that Architecture plays an important role in the healing of patients, a concept known as Healing Architecture. Healing Architecture is a subset of a larger and more established concept called Organic Architecture. Organic Architecture has principles that provide design elements that influence healing of Drug Addicts in a Rehabilitation Centre. These design elements such as Indoor Temperature, Humidity, Sound Intensity and more were analysed using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The results of the analysis revealed that the buildings used for Drug Addict Rehabilitation in Kaduna lack the necessary design considerations that enhance the healing process. It was also established through various interviews that patients in the rehabilitation centres would prefer improvements in their buildings such as brighter coloured rooms, access to gardens and cool temperature in their interior spaces. This would be a reflection of the use of principles of Organic Architecture in the design of their facilities. This study posits that the Government and relevant authorities should consider factors that encourage the use of Healing Architecture in the design and construction of Drug Addict’s Rehabilitation Centres. The proposed rehabilitation centre demonstrates the design considerations that could facilitate the healing process of drug addict rehabilitation.

In order to achieve lifetime abstinence from illicit drugs and psychoactive substances, drug de-addiction and rehabilitation now endeavors to provide emotional support along with medical care, rather than aiming at removal of physical dependences on drugs only. When a drug addict is released from a Detention Camp, he/she is reintegrated back to the society as liability with high temptation to relapse, due to the ineffectiveness of the detention strategy and gross inadequacy of drug treatment and rehabilitation services in Nigeria, as Programs like Detoxification, Psychotherapy and Meditation are absent. The purpose of this study therefore is to explore the principles of therapeutic architecture towards designing a therapeutic environment, with a view to support the new treatment trend for drug addicts and thugs in Bauchi state- Nigeria. The method applied in this study is basically qualitative, using Multiple Case Study approach. Cross Case Analysis was used to analyze the data coll...

ABSTRACT The worldwide struggle to proffer functional solutions and possible preventive measures to drug/substance abuse and addiction has been going on for ages. Pharmaceutical industries have been on more than a decade long search for a cure for addiction without any major breakthrough, leaving most experts torn between various methods of approaching substance addiction. The orthodox methods of treatment for drug addiction is by the seclusion of the addicts from the society or the combination of both in-patient and out-patient system to aid in wholesome rehabilitation. However, this thesis proposes that Architecture can be used also as a tool to create a controlled environment promoting rehabilitation, resettlement and that also allows for community integration helping to establish a conducive standard for addiction rehabilitation. This is possible because the effects of factors such as sound, light, color, privacy, views, and even smell, texture and finishes can be employed using architecture to promote a healing environment and also psychological healing of drug addicts. Ultimately, this thesis introduces the concept of an integrated community rehabilitation and wellness centre in one of the most notorious urban environments in Western Nigeria, Badagry. The city is popular for being a major settling point for drug smugglers, largely due to its proximity to the Seme Border. The idea is to demonstrate that a healing environment can be enhanced using architecture and the natural environment as a tool for reconnecting inhabitants with their environment and ultimately, rediscovering themselves. This dissertation explores therapeutic architecture and the integration of addiction rehabilitation into the Cape Flats, Mitchells Plain area. This project ultimately introduces the concept of an integrated community rehabilitation and wellness centre in one of the most notorious, unhealthy urban environments in the Western Cape, Mitchells Plain. This will demonstrate that a healing environment can be achieved in any context, urban or rural. A rehabilitation centre that engages with its surrounding community, fostering various levels of controlled interaction between patient and public. An integrated facility that gives back to its community through shared facilities. This investigation also unpacks the existing rehabilitation ecology and the gradual transition process in the formulation of a new hybrid system that combines the various stages of rehabilitation within a centralised facility. The project aims to deinstitutionalize the existing rehabilitation programme through the ‘simulation of a real life’ concept, where the facility will incorporate familiar elements, such as the house, neighbourhood and downtown to replicate the variety of environments in our everyday lives. The design uses ‘nature as therapy through architecture’ with the implementation of various concepts, which includes a raised therapeutic platform and a perimeter planter, serving as an urban filter that defuses the harsh urban context of Mitchells Plain. This project also explores the role of Architectural technology in therapy and ultimately introduces the concept of a highly localised adaptive façade system that allows for individual patient control and to filter the interactive visual relationship between patient and public. Our modern healing facilities have been designed to house apparatus for healing but not to be healing instruments in themselves. Architecture should be considered just as significant as the treatments that it houses.

Dismiss one of the great building designers of modern times at your peril. The words of American Philip Johnson who undoubtedly revolutionized the conventional view of architecture in the past century, lie at the core of this paper. Buildings have a cause or as Spiro Kostof puts it ‘are a social act’ and therefore when one is considering individuals with drug abuse problems, the design of their temporary social ‘containment’ so to speak, must not look or feel anything like an exclusion. It must emulate a world which embraces them through spaces encouraging gradual community involvement, a therapeutic process that does not resemble a hospital or foundation environment. A rehabilitation inner and outer space that provides them with the means of understanding what went wrong and how to work-through the group- towards building their own strength to surpass physical and psychological obstacles on the road to recovery and active inclusion. Such therapeutic community buildings must not be designed to remind long term absence from life, but a temporary home away from home, a pathway back to individual stability and societal development. And this short term abode must be enriched with approaches to healing that bring about changes from the inside out. One of them is expression through the arts.

Background: Drug addiction has affected several numbers of individuals and is associated with impairment in various aspects of physical, psychological and socio-occupational functioning. Drug abuse deteriorates the human health. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment introduced IRCA (Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts) in order to provide composite or integrated services for the rehabilitation of substance dependent individual. It aims for the whole person recovery (WPR) and has set certain guidelines for the structure and functioning of these centres. Time-to-time assessment of these centres is important to know about whether the guidelines are effectively implemented or not and how far the objectives of the center are being met. Objectives: To assess the structure and functioning of Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), New Delhi. Methodology: It is a qualitative study and case study, which was done with questionnaire tools, interviews and records of the center. Results: The center was smoothly functioning with adequate number of staff for the respective tasks. There was adequate provision of infrastructure and material resources. There was lack of training activities for the staff and educational and vocational activities for the patients. There were inadequate funds by the government and was not allotted to the center on time. Conclusion: The procedure of counseling was effectively done in order to spread the awareness and educate not only the drug users but also their family. The center failed to achieve its objective to make a patient gainfully employed after their recovery. Lack of training activities and lack of support from the government were the key factors that the center was unable to fulfill its objectives fully.

As per the definition given by the World Health Population, health alludes to the condition of complete physical, mental and social prosperity and not just the nonappearance of sickness or infirmity. It acts as a crucial parameter in the country's development. It could disrupt due to various strains resulting in Stress-the body's response to anything or a situation that requires any attention or action. Architecture is deeply contextual and responds to its social and environmental context as much as its historical and physical one. If we are designing for the ripple effect consciously, we benefit the individuals and support the community. By creating a healing space, one evokes the feelings of serenity, calm, and relaxation and can contribute to an environment that facilitates the natural healing process-a process of repair, recovery, and return to wholeness in mind, body, and spirit. Since there have been strong human responses to nature because these responses appear in study after study and are consistent across social, economic, cultural, and racial boundaries, buildings are the structures that strengthen the local community and connect people. These help the neighborhood economy and how they work. In this way, when we configuration to amplify the positive-social, monetary, and natural variables become the waves of architecture and engineering. To look over the design consideration of such spaces in the institutions, how can the healing Space architecture become an integral part of healing itself? How can architecture have an active role in the healing process? The conventional design approach is missing the inspiration and connection with the built structure from its precincts. Thus, the architectural inputs can affect the building design and affect the healing process. It also creates a comfortable and interactive for both the patients/ visitor and the staff who spend the central part of their day in it and, most importantly, would create a network of community and built form. This study emphasizes the variation in the patient's mood and creates a healing place instead of the machine to treat people with patient-focused experiential perspectives. The dissertation has a framework with the chapters divided into different sections. The first section introduces the health and the role of psychology concerning the spaces that evoke different moods and emotions within the user. The next chapter discusses and brings the different parameters with the medical shreds of evidence by reviewing and analyzing a few previous research studies in the same field. The third chapter analyzed a few of the live architectural projects based on the parameters mentioned in the chapter before and made a comparative analysis of those projects. Lastly, in the fourth chapter, the inferences are developed with the design recommendations for the thesis's future study and guidelines.

Text description provided by the architects. The new airport was based on the site with a rich history and huge amount of archaeological finds. At the construction site, a mound with Sarmatian burials was discovered and, in the mound, there lay treasure with gold ornaments. Also at the beginning of the 2 century there were greek colonies.

Rostov on Don Business Terminal / Nefa Architects - Exterior Photography, Facade

We combined the story of the site with the status of the building, it is a terminal for officials and delegations. Using an iconic cultural type of a building we develop a colonnade from white concrete with glass volume inside. Ragged rhythm of the columns create the sense of a certain unbuild incompleteness.

Presence of inner yard in the center of the airport create multiple shifts of the spaces, from interior to exterior inversely. The interior pillars from the amber murano glass absorbing the daylight fulfill the room with golden touch.
