Emily Johnson Allied Universal 123 Fictional Lane Houston, TX 77001

Dear Ms. Johnson:

Several years ago, a diligent security guard’s swift action saved my cousin’s life during a medical emergency at a shopping mall. This incident not only instilled in me the value of security personnel, but it also ignited my passion for the profession. It is with this enthusiasm and experience honed over the years that I hope to bring to Allied Universal as your next security guard.

During my tenure at Security Solutions of America, I effectively utilized CCTV cameras and access control software, which led to a 38% reduction in reported incidents in my designated patrol area within the first year. Also, harnessing my training in First Aid, I administered care on 12+ occasions, ensuring individuals received timely assistance before paramedics arrived.

Prior to this, as a junior security guard at Star Protection Agency, I was commended for my adaptability and knack for quickly learning new tools and techniques. Here, I increased the effectiveness of nighttime patrols by 27% through the strategic use of infrared equipment and motion-sensor technologies.

The blend of my hands-on experience, proficiency in using state-of-the-art security equipment, and a deep-seated commitment to safeguarding others, makes me confident in my ability to contribute to Allied Universal. I am excited about the opportunity to bring my skills to your esteemed organization and ensure the safety and security of your premises and its occupants.

Thank you for considering my application. I am looking forward to the possibility of discussing how I can be a valuable member of the Allied Universal team.

How to Format a Security Guard Cover Letter

Salesperson pops out of computer screen to depict outselling the competition with sales cover letter

Just like you’d customize your patrol schedules and emergency response procedures to specific company needs, you’ll want to apply that same thought process to your cover letter.

The job description will be your guide to success here. Each company will emphasize key qualifications they’re looking for, so all you have to do is stay alert to the indicators that something is essential. For example, a company may reference using security cameras, and you could stand out by referencing your proficiency in commercial CCTV camera systems.

application letter for a post of guard

Security guard cover letter introduction

Whether you’re working with customers or patrol team members, you’d want to learn their names to provide a personable touch while on the job. You should do the same with your cover letter by greeting a hiring manager by name. So, try to use your vigilant abilities to see if you can locate a contact person in the job description or on the company’s website.

The next part of optimizing your opener will be getting specific to each job’s security responsibilities and mission. For example, you could explain how you’ll use your safety management skills to ensure a comfortable shopping experience at a retail store.

The opener below doesn’t make enough impact since the applicant doesn’t address a specific person or mention anything related to the company’s mission or security needs.

Lacking a personal connection here!

Your security guard job opening caught my attention. This looks like a great company to work for, and I’d be eager to join your surveillance team.

The following opener does a much better job of relating to the blend of traditional and innovative vigilance protocols that’ll make the applicant successful as a security guard at G4S Secure Solutions.

An opener connecting to the company’s security practices!

Dear Mr. Martinez,

The best way to start your closing paragraph is to restate your connection to the company’s mission and how your top security skills fit in. For example, you could write about how you’ll use your knowledge in strategic threat intelligence practices to ensure a safe working environment where all premises are monitored.

Lastly, it’s good practice to thank the hiring manager for their time and use a call to action, such as “I look forward to discussing this security guard role with you further.”

The closer below doesn’t make enough impact since it lacks information about specific security skills or company needs.

Lacking specific security skills or needs!

One page is the optimal length for security guard cover letters. Just like recording surveillance data, you’ll want to keep your cover letter concise and relevant to a company’s primary needs, such as checkpoint patrol strategies and using two-way radios.

You should make your cover letter custom for each job to ensure the specific security skills you write about are relevant and stand out to each company. For example, one company may use an active patrol system, whereas another performs random patrols. A custom cover letter helps you stand out for each one.

When you can’t find a contact person’s name, you can simply address your security cover letter to “[name of company] hiring team.” Then, ensure the rest of your cover letter is highly specific to surveillance systems and tactical planning needs based on the job description to ensure the details still stand out.

Your first step in writing your security guard cover letter is to research the company you’re targeting. What are they looking for in a candidate? How do their needs align with your background? For example, suppose the job description mentions they value candidates with strong communication and conflict resolution skills. In that case, your priority should be citing examples of you de-escalating conflicts peacefully, even during high-stress situations.

In addition to emphasizing the most relevant aspects of your experience, convey your sincerity and the pride you take in protecting others as a security guard. Infusing your content with a more personal approach will give your cover letter a unique quality that helps you stand out from other candidates.

Last, take the time to carefully proofread your cover letter before submitting it for any application. Careless grammatical and spelling errors not only distract the hiring manager from your qualifications but also send a message that you lack attention to detail, which is important for any security guard role.

What To Include in a Security Guard Cover Letter

1. contact information and salutation.

Greeting the hiring manager by name — Mr. or Ms. [Last Name] is important. This small personal touch shows that you’ve taken the time to learn more about the company before submitting your security guard cover letter and that you’re genuinely interested in joining their team. If you can’t find the hiring manager’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager.”

2. Introductory paragraph

Your introduction is one of the most critical aspects of the security guard cover letter. Grabbing the reader’s attention as quickly as possible should be a primary objective. Lead with a powerful achievement that entices the reader to engage with your content. For example, you might emphasize that you mitigated a major security threat or successfully ensured the safety of patrons in an environment with high foot traffic.

3. Background paragraph

Provide more insights into your security guard background in the body paragraphs of your cover letter. Highlight your ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations and coordinate with law enforcement to resolve dangerous situations. Leadership is a pivotal quality of any security professional, so highlight this aspect of your career using tangible examples. Be sure to emphasize achievements that align with the company’s needs.

4. Key skills and qualifications paragraph

For a security guard cover letter, highlight skill sets and qualifications essential for diffusing dangerous situations with poise and professionalism. Below, you’ll find a list of potential attributes that hiring managers will be looking for during the job search:

  • Access control
  • Behavioral analysis
  • Communication
  • Conflict resolution
  • CPR certified
  • Customer service
  • De-escalation
  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Emergency response
  • Law enforcement
  • Physical security
  • Risk assessment
  • Safety protocols
  • Security management
  • Security operations
  • Security training
  • Surveillance
  • Team leadership

5. Conclusion

Think about your closing paragraph as a call to action that encourages the hiring manager to bring you in for an interview. Emphasize how your background and experience can help the organization improve security services and safety protocols. Thank the hiring manager for their time in the final sentence, as this shows your professionalism, which is essential for any security guard position.

When Should You Include a Security Guard Cover Letter?

If a cover letter is listed as a job requirement, including one is mandatory. That said, there are some advantages to providing a cover letter, even if the application lists it as optional. Security guard positions often have similar job responsibilities, making it difficult to stand out from other applicants during the job search. Submitting a cover letter that provides unique insights into your experience and personal values can help make a lasting impression on the reader and increase your odds of landing the interview.

Security Guard Cover Letter Tips

1. highlight your communication and conflict resolution skills.

The ability to de-escalate conflicts peacefully is a trademark of any successful security guard. Hiring managers want to see you can protect others effectively and prevent unnecessary violence. As you build your cover letter, show you’re a strong communicator who can interface effectively with diverse populations and diffuse a variety of situations.

2. Feature your leadership capabilities as a security professional

To make a lasting impression on potential employers, demonstrate your proven track record of responding to high-pressure emergencies calmly and professionally. This type of role requires exceptional leadership attributes, and not everyone can handle these types of incidents with a cool demeanor. It’s also important to highlight your experience collaborating with law enforcement agencies and emergency medical services teams, as this may be required depending on the type of incident you’re responding to.

3. Quantify your security guard experience

Incorporating numbers and data into your security guard cover letter is a great way to bolster the impact of your achievements. One approach is to feature specific quality metrics, such as resolution rates, response times, and the number of incidents reported each week. You could also draw attention to the area’s foot traffic, as this showcases your ability to provide quality security services in highly populated environments.

Security Guard Cover Letter FAQs

Are cover letters becoming outdated -.

Although the common belief is that cover letters have become obsolete, many hiring managers still rely on them to identify qualified candidates for job openings. One benefit of including a cover letter is that it allows you to express your genuine interest and enthusiasm for the opportunity. The cover letter also shows potential employers you’re willing to go above and beyond what’s expected of you, a great way to stand out from other applicants.

How long should my security guard cover letter be? -

While you may be tempted to provide a comprehensive overview of your experience, the cover letter should be brief and limited to three or four paragraphs. Including excess information runs the risk of overwhelming the reader and drawing attention away from your most relevant qualifications and achievements.

Should I use artificial intelligence to write my cover letter? -

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools can be highly useful but you need to be careful when using them to write a cover letter. Security guard job duties tend to sound generic, and that won’t change if you allow ChatGPT to tell your whole story. If you opt to use AI writing support to give yourself a starting point, be sure to infuse your content with unique elements that capture who you are as a security professional.

Reliability and personal responsibility should lie at the heart of the security guard cover letter.

Unlike a lock (which is either locked or not, and can be easily picked), people employ security guards for the more subtle aspects of protection that only a human can provide. You notice things that don’t seem right, your presence will deter all but the most determined of thieves and you will be trusted with the most treasured of possessions and people. When you are standing around the same place day and night, you tend to notice the small things that don;t seem right. Observation is a security guard's superpower.

The thing is, though (unlike a lock) if security guards aren’t incredibly conscientious, human error can easily creep into their jobs after a long night shift. At that point the advantage goes to the bad guys. That is exactly why the security guard cover letter plays such an important role in the job search process. Your resume will take an employer through your experience, but your cover letter needs to offer an insight into how you work and what sort of person they will be trusting. You need to convince them that you are the person for the role.

Just as “people buy from people,” those with something or someone to protect will hire a “person” that they can trust rather than a list of achievements and responsibilities. This security guard cover letter example and guide will seek to explore how to convey the aspects of your personality and experience that will secure you that vital interview. The cover letter is the clincher - let them into who you are and they will want to find out more.

Start to tell those parts of the story that you would like to continue at the interview. Here are the core elements of our security manager cover letter example that you should consider:

  • Make the most of your security guard story with a suitable cover letter format
  • Share different messages in the cover letter introduction, middle part and closing
  • How to create a security guard cover letter sample with no experience
  • Tips to bear in mind and mistakes to avoid in the cover letter

According to Zippia , there are currently 43,000 security guard roles in the United States and with growth of 4% this is an industry that is a solid bet for the future.

Best format for security guard cover letter example

A security guard is often a no-nonsense and uncomplicated individual who simply gets their job done to an exceptional standard. In the same way, a security guard cover letter should be straightforward and to the point. The following format is a tried-and -tested way of writing an impactful cover letter that the hiring manager will find easy to read. You just have to stand out - you are at your best when nothing happens.

You want them to remember your story long after they have closed the letter, so the following cover letter example will enable you to break down your story into manageable parts:

  • The cover letter header
  • The greeting / salutation
  • The cover letter intro
  • The middle paragraphs (body of the letter)
  • The ending paragraph of your cover letter (conclusion and sign-off)

Many of the tips in this brief security guard cover letter example guide are geared towards the specific profession, but there is more granular advice on every aspect of writing a cover letter in our comprehensive cover letter example. Each cover letter for each role will be different, so it is worth considering every aspect of the process.

Here is a security guard cover letter example that might spark some thoughts:

Dear Ms. Hinchcliffe,

Having participated in security teams at international events for the past eight years and previously in the armed forces as a security expert, I have learned to combine tech and process to provide peace of mind.

The role at Minefield will allow me to expand on my wealth of personal security expertise. Having worked with celebrities, sports people and politicians, I am a discreet and reliable member of an events team. Having dealt with several high-profile incidents over my career, I understand the value of being ready for the unexpected.

I bring a calm and logical approach to my work – if a client feels that you have every base covered, they feel safe. With a proven track record of vigilance and attention to detail, I am confident in my ability to contribute effectively to your team and ensure the safety and security of your people.

I am adept at making sure that security protocols are followed, with careful contingency planning and threat awareness. I have experience in managing city-wide events with multiple security teams for various VIPs and celebrities in a variety of countries and cultures.

I have a solid eye for detail and my experience helps me to suggest flaws in any event security plan. If a group is looking to disrupt proceedings, they will aim for the blind spots. I am there to spot the loop holes before they do.

I would welcome the chance to come for an interview to meet your security team and talk through what I have learned over the course of my career.

The header of a cover letter is like a security guard’s uniform. If you were wearing casual shorts and a baggy t-shirt, you wouldn’t be taken very seriously. Equally, the security guard cover letter needs to meet the requirements and convey a sense of professionalism.

You might think that there is more important information to include at the top of a cover letter than your name, email details and mobile number. You would be wrong. It is exactly these details that every hiring manager needs to see (and mentally tick off in their heads) before they can get into the detail of your application.

Also, make sure that you have a formal sounding email address – some joke account that you started ten years ago may not form the right impression. If needed, create an address specifically for job search correspondence.

You don;t have to share your full home address as there may be data protection issues. Every security guard understand the need for privacy. Also, the formality of including the inside address of the employer is no longer required. The cover letter will not be sent by post, after all.

Goal of the cover letter header: Be practical when designing your cover letter header and include all the required info. You won’t be hired for getting this right, but you might put doubts in a hiring manager’s mind if you get it wrong.

Attention to detail should be at the top of any security guard’s priority list, so getting the small details right matters when it comes to the cover letter greeting. Ensure that you find out the name of the hiring manager or person conducting the interview, use the appropriate title (Mr, Mrs, Ms) and double check if you are not certain. We all like being called by our name, but nothing grates mores than when someone gets our name wrong.

If you have not got the detective skills to find out the name of your future boss, don't bother applying.

Goal of letter greeting: Don’t derail your application by making a mistake with the greeting.

Whether you specialise in escorting important people, looking after a warehouse with valuable goods or working in a corporate office, the introduction to your cover letter has to be laser focused on the value that you will bring to each specific job.

Carefully consider the job description and find the best possible angle from your past experience to allow you to position yourself as the security guard for them. It might not be the example that you are most proud of, it should simply be the most relevant example. Show a little personality in terms of the language that you use and give your story some context in terms of the depth of your experience or the amount of time you have been doing a certain thing.

The introduction to a security guard cover letter should make the hiring manager want to read more, so don’t be afraid to start with your “one reason why you should hire me.” Make it relevant to the role that you were applying for. It may not be your top career highlight, but it will be more memorable if the person reading the letter can imagine you doing it for them. You have to get them imagining you (and only you) in that uniform.

Goal of the cover letter intro: Tailor the security guard introduction to the parts of your experience that tally best with the requirements of each specific role. Don’t let it become a generic couple of sentences that could “fit” any kind of role.

The middle part of the security guard cover letter is where you explore some of your career highlights in a little more depth. How did you go about undertaking a certain task? What were the reasons behind your successes? How did you do things differently?

There will be many other candidates who have done the same job as you, but in the middle part of the security manager cover letter you have the opportunity to showcase just how you do it differently. Differentiation lies at the heart of every successful job search and you have to think carefully about just where your unique edge is going to come from. Don’t tell the stories that most of your competition will be telling. Be unique and be memorable – you will have plenty of time to tell the more mundane career stories during an interview, but you have to intrigue the hiring manager into inviting you in the first place.

Mention the kinds of jobs that you worked on and the clients that you have served. You might have to do a little detective work to ensure that there is a match with your future employer, but if there is a match there will be that magical feeling of: “great, they have done this sort of thing before.”

Also, be selective in terms of the language that you use in the middle part of the security guard cover letter. Your job might not involve a lot of writing; but picking an impressive action verb to improve an accomplishment can always help your application to stand out. Stay away from fluffy adjectives or skills that you cannot back up with real examples. Make sure that you sound professional and don't be too conversational. You don't come to work to make friends, that could be a potential security risk, if anything.

Goal of the body of your cover letter: Give as much detail as possible around the impact of your experience and how you went about achieving it. Make the reader want to find out more.

Try to fill the cover letter with the language of the industry that you will be working in as well as that of a security manager. Future employers will want to feel that you understand their business. Have a look at other industry cover letters from our free cover letter example collection to get an idea of what other people are writing in their cover letters. Whether you are working as a security guard in retail, logistics or finance, use their terminology where you can.

The closing paragraph of the security guard cover letter should end with a sense of reliability and trust. You have presented a couple of examples why you should be the person to hire, and you add a hopeful note that you would welcome the chance of an interview to discuss further.

If you haven’t sold yourself too heavily in the cover letter and simply presented the relevant facts of your experience, that call-to-action interview request will seem entirely reasonable. If you don’t ask the question, any reasonable recruiter would wonder why not. Confidence is an important quality for any security guard, but qualify it with some evidence that backs up your claims.

Goal of the closing: End with on a dependable and professional note and don’t be afraid to politely ask for the opportunity of an interview.

Mistakes to avoid in your security guard cover letter

As attention to detail is critical for a great security guard, there can be no room for error in their cover letter. True, a perfect command of the English language won’t be a critical job requirement, but these sorts of mistakes should not be made by any job applicant. Having said that, they tend to sneak in awfully easily if you are not careful:

  • Grammar and spelling: Doing grammar checks might seem like a challenge for many of us, but when online services such as Grammarly will mop up the major oversights, it would be remiss not to take advantage of them.
  • Conversational tone: Security guards have to be able to get on with a wide range of people, so check that your tone does not come across as being too formal. Write your letter as if you are talking with a colleague – don’t force the sort of language that doesn’t sound like you.
  • Generic examples: Try not to parrot the job description with a list of generic responsibilities. Talk about what you did, how you did it and what difference you made.

It is important to think through the written content of your security guard cover letter carefully, but you should not forget the impact that a visually attractive layout can have. You can be sure that a well-designed PDF template will look the same in any browser (which cannot always be said for Word versions) and using our simple cover letter templates will add a different dimension to how your cover letter is received.

Cover letter for security guard with no experience

Security guards do not require a college education and it is possible to secure a role if you do not have previous experience. You should be able to demonstrate that you have excelled in a position of responsibility, are a good communicator and have solid organizational skills. If you seem like someone who can be trusted, you will have every chance of securing your first security guard role.

There are many ways in which someone with no specific experience can demonstrate these qualities and a lack of experience should not put you off applying. A willingness to learn and a passion for the role will take you a long way – a security guard cover letter will help you to explore these aspects.

How to Write a Cover Letter for a Security Guard Job

application letter for a post of guard

Is your resolution for 2021 to land your dream job? Or maybe you want to start a new career in a fast-paced industry where you can make a difference as an essential frontline worker. We have compiled our top five tips to help your application for a security job stand out, and it all starts with writing a great cover letter.

Applying for jobs can be a stressful and challenging, yet exciting and fun experience to imagine yourself in new environments. Applying for a security job is no different. While there are lots of ways to prepare for being a security guard, the hard truth is – there isn’t a single candidate out there whose background and experience will align 100% with the posted job description. Nevertheless, chances are, there are dozens of other candidates pursuing the same role. You can read more about how to become a security guard here .

A recruiter, especially for a security role, on average will look at approximately 20-50 resumes a day. Hence, they will short-list only a handful of applicants for a role. Naturally, most of the applicants’ resumes will go as far as receiving a quick skim. But this is where the cover letter shines! Click here to find out more on how to write a resume for a security guard role.

Typically, a cover letter is read before your resume. Therefore, a cover letter can aid you with minimizing, ideally eliminating, that gap between your profile and the job description. Additionally, it grants you an opportunity to present yourself and your fit for the role, before you even go for an interview. But like anything else, writing a good cover letter for a security role too calls for practice and following some tried and tested techniques.

Here are five tips on how to write a strong cover letter for a security job:

Tip #1 – introduce yourself.

So now you have agreed to provide a cover letter with your application! The recruiter has short-listed five potential candidates, including yourself, and every one of them has submitted a cover letter.

A good introduction to your cover letter will not only make your application stand-out among the rest of the applicants; but also allow you to uniquely introduce yourself. The introduction can start with a relatable and catchy story. The idea is to engage the recruiter in knowing more about yourself. The introduction of your cover letter can be anywhere between 2-4 sentences long. However, it shouldn’t take up more than a quarter of your entire cover letter.

For example, you can open the letter with action-inspiring sentence starters such as – “I have always been passionate about willing to lend a hand…”. Or, “Currently a security guard at XYZ company, I bring over 2 years of experience…”. Or, “Having volunteered in XYZ, I have developed skills such as…”.

Tip #2 – Tailor it!

Once you start the job hunt, it is normal to have an arsenal of cover letters at your disposal. But please don’t submit a generic cover letter with your application. The recruiters have read an enormous amount of those in their line of work. So the moment they sense that they are reading recycled material that does not resonate with the role, you will lose a fair bit of credibility. Moreover, you risk accidentally leaving in the incorrect organization’s name, or even the wrong role.

Doing some research on the company’s mission, values and news are easy ways to tailor your cover letter. If you can find common grounds to connect with the company, recruiters will take note! For instance, you can look up the corporate social responsibilities undertaken by the organization in the past 5 years. Then relate them to your passions and values.

Adding a personal touch to the cover letter can go a long way as it shows your care and commitment to the role. Besides, what better way to describe how good a fit you are for the position if you don’t tailor it? In addition to showcasing your knowledge of the organization, you can also talk a bit about the particular site you are applying for.

Say you are applying for a security role at the airport. Now imagine the amount of value your application will bear when you describe your site-specific knowledge on the building where you will be responsible for protecting assets and human lives. Moreover, tailoring your letter also lets you explain how you obtained those skills you mentioned in your resume. And then, connect them to the skills required in the job description of the role you are applying for.

Tip #3 – Your ambition

Ever wondered why one of the classic questions in an interview – “where do you see yourself in the next 5 years”, is asked? It is to understand how long you will stick with the industry, and hence – the organization. Additionally, in some cases, recruiters may also be looking to see if there are future positions or career advancements available that match your profile.

Including a roadmap to your career in the cover letter will help the recruiter understand your commitment to the company. Moreover, it also demonstrates your potential to grow within the organization. You can click here to learn more about what career path being a security guard can offer you. For example, your ambition of pursuing a life-long career in law enforcement will set you apart from someone who wants to be an accountant applying for a Security Supervisor role. Click here to learn more about how to prepare for a career in law enforcement.

Tip #4 – Keep it concise

Less is more when it comes to cover letters. Remember that recruiters have one limited resource they work off of; you guessed it – time! Your goal should be to convey as much information as possible while using the least amount of space. In the efforts to tailoring and promoting your skills in the cover letter, don’t under-estimate the value of brevity. A cover letter shouldn’t be longer than a page.

Tip #5 – PDF it!

If you have worked with Word, you already know how much of a nuisance formatting is. Now add different versions of Microsoft Word or even Operating Systems (OS) to that equation. When you submit your cover letter, you don’t know which version of Word, or OS the recruiter will be using. The last thing you want is to have the recruiter read a cover letter with scrambled formatting. One way to prevent that from happening is to convert the cover letter to PDF. This way, the formatting stays locked and intact. Also, if the job application portal doesn’t have a specific place for uploading cover letters, you can always merge your cover letter and resume in a PDF file and upload it. Just make sure the file opens with your cover letter, followed by your resume.

The reason why this one is a bonus - is because it is optional, and will not always be possible. It is to research your recruiter! Researching your recruiter before writing a cover letter is as important as researching the organization before going to an interview. If you know the name of the recruiter, instead of starting with “To Whom It May Concern”, start with Mr./Mrs. [Last Name] of the recruiter to make your cover letter more personable. For example, if the recruiter’s name is Adam Smith you can open the cover letter with ‘Dear Mr. Smith’. If you are unable to find the name of the recruiter, you can always start with ‘Dear Hiring Manager’.

By now it should be evident that cover letters significantly boost your chances of getting your desired security job. Unless it is specifically discouraged in the job advertisement; it is one of the best practices to present yourself to the employers via a cover letter. Writing a cover letter can be time-consuming and a bit laborious. You can find a sample cover letter here as a guide. However, it is worth taking the opportunity in writing a cover letter as it demonstrates your communication skills, commitment, and care for the applying role.

How to Write a Security Officer Cover Letter:

A step-by-step guide to writing the perfect security officer cover letter.

Address your letter.

Address the reader by name..

Address your letter directly to the hiring manager, recruiter, employee, or whoever the person is that put out the job posting.

Avoid generic greetings.

If a contact name is supplied or if it is possible to find out a name, avoid using a general greeting such as "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam." Use the relevant title before the person's last name — for example, "Mr. Miller" or "Ms. Anderson."

Start with an introduction.

Keep your introduction brief..

In no more than three sentences , tell the person why you are writing and what position you are applying to.

Indicate that you meet the job requirements.

Your writing should reflect the exact job title and you should briefly highlight key job advertisement requirements that you meet, for example, three year's experience as a security officer.

Mention that you feel you are the best person for the job.

Use one sentence to clearly state why you feel that you are the best fit for the security officer position.

Highlight your training and experience.

Briefly discuss your training..

Be sure to refer back to the job advertisement and directly address the stated requirements. Write a few sentences on licenses you may hold, such as a license issued by the Security Industry Authority (SIA), or any formal security officer training you've received, including specialty training. Alternatively, explain the nature of your related in-job training.

Highlight your experience.

State how many years you've worked as a security officer. Don't neglect to mention where you've worked. Limit this to a single sentence as you will be discussing your exact duties and work experience further on.

Match your core skills to those mentioned in the job ad.

Directly match prominently featured duties and responsibilities mentioned in the job ad with core skills and competencies from your resume. For example, if the job ad requires experience in a security specialty, such as private, airport, armored car, or armed escort security, mention the extent of your experience in that particular regard.

Describe your most recent job.

Discuss your most recent role and duties..

In a few sentences , talk about your responsibilities at your current or previous job as a security officer. Include details about how your contribution positively impacted a place of employment.

Briefly discuss what your experience has taught you about your role as a security officer.

Showcase your biggest accomplishments in your previous job.

Mention one or two of your proudest career moments, for example, for example, significantly reducing trespassing and theft, training new security officers in effective patrolling and the use of surveillance equipment, and being commended by managers for your dedication.

Celebrate the organization.

Mention two or three things you know about the business, individual, or institution you're applying to. Do a bit of research and find out about the products or services that they offer, their success stories, or their public image.

State the reasons why you want to work there.

Mention why joining them as a security officer appeals to you. This could include mention of the business's reputation as an employer, their competitive employee benefits, their investment in state-of-the-art surveillance equipment, and that their security requirements coincide with your expertise. State how you will add value.

End with a call to action.

Indicate that you would like to hear from them..

Say that you've attached your resume for their consideration and invite the reader to contact you via email or phone call.

Close your letter.

Thank the reader for their time. Add "sincerely" or an acceptable synonym and sign off with your full name.

The best way to start a Security Guard cover letter is with a strong opening that grabs the hiring manager's attention. Begin by addressing the letter to a specific person, if possible. Then, lead with a compelling statement that highlights your relevant experience or a key achievement that demonstrates your suitability for the role. For example: "Dear [Hiring Manager's Name], As a dedicated Security Guard with over five years of experience in ensuring the safety and security of premises, personnel, and visitors, I am excited about the opportunity to bring my expertise to [Company Name]." This approach immediately showcases your relevant experience and expresses genuine interest in the specific position.

Security Guards should end a cover letter by summarizing their interest in the position and their qualifications that make them a strong fit for the role. They should also express their eagerness to contribute to the safety and security of the organization. For example, "I am excited about the opportunity to bring my experience and dedication to a security guard role at your organization. I am confident that my skills and passion make me a strong candidate for this position." A Security Guard's cover letter should ideally be about one page long. This length is sufficient to introduce yourself, explain why you're interested in the security position, and highlight your most relevant skills and experiences without overwhelming the hiring manager with information. Remember, the cover letter is your opportunity to make a strong first impression, so it's important to be concise, clear, and compelling. Too long of a letter might not be fully read, while too short might not provide enough information about your qualifications.

If you've worked in customer service, you can mention your ability to interact professionally with the public. 4. Transferable Experience: Highlight any experience that could be applicable to a security guard position. For example, if you've worked in a role where you had to maintain safety or follow strict procedures, these experiences can be relevant. 5. Show Enthusiasm for the Role: Express your interest in the security industry and your willingness to learn and grow in the role. 6. Education and Certifications: If you have any education or certifications that are relevant to the role, be sure to mention them. This could include a degree in criminal justice or a CPR certification, for example. 7. Close Professionally: Thank the hiring manager for their time and express your interest in the opportunity to discuss your application further. 8. Proofread: Finally, make sure to proofread your cover letter for any spelling or grammar errors. Remember, the goal of the cover letter is to show the hiring manager why you would be a good fit for the role, even if you don't have direct experience. Highlight your relevant skills and experiences, and show your enthusiasm for the role and the security industry.

What about your security guard cover letter format: organizing and structuring your information

Here is one secret you should know about your security guard cover letter assessment. The Applicant Tracker System (or ATS) won't analyze your cover letter.

You should thus focus on making an excellent impression on recruiters by writing consistent:

  • Introduction
  • Body paragraphs (and explanation)
  • Promise or Call to action
  • Signature (that's optional)

Now, let's talk about the design of your security guard cover letter.

Ensure all of your paragraphs are single-spaced and have a one-inch margins on all sides (like in our cover letter templates ).

Also, our cover letter builder automatically takes care of the format and comes along with some of the most popular (and modern) fonts like Volkhov, Chivo, and Bitter.

Speaking of fonts, professionals advise you to keep your security guard cover letter and resume in the same typography and avoid the over-used Arial or Times New Roman.

When wondering whether you should submit your security guard cover letter in Doc or PDF, select the second, as PDF keeps all of your information and design consistent.

The top sections on a security guard cover letter

Header with Contact Information: Include your full name, address, phone number, and email address so the recruiter can easily reach you, as it demonstrates professionalism and attention to detail, which are key traits for a security guard.

Introduction: Clearly state the security guard position you are applying for, how you heard about it, and why you are interested in this specific role, as it shows you have a direct intention and understanding of the job requisites.

Body - Relevant Experience and Skills: Highlight your previous security work experience, specific skills such as surveillance systems knowledge or conflict de-escalation techniques, and any relevant certifications, to prove you have the practical abilities needed for the security guard position.

Body - Understanding of Security Protocols: Detail your experience with security protocols and procedures, and your commitment to safety and protection, as these are pivotal in showcasing your ability to maintain a secure environment.

Closing and Call to Action: Express your enthusiasm for the opportunity to discuss how you can contribute to the safety and security of the premises, and include a polite request for an interview, as it reinforces your eagerness and proactive approach to the role.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

Observation Skills : Being able to quickly notice out-of-place behaviors or items to prevent potential threats or incidents.

How to personalize your security guard cover letter greeting

Before you start writing your security guard cover letter, take the time to find out who is recruiting for the role.

Search for the recruiter's name on LinkedIn or the corporate website to address them personally in your security guard cover letter salutation .

What if you can't find out who's recruiting for the role?

Always aim to avoid the very impersonal "Dear Sir/Madam" - instead, opt out for "Dear HR Team" or "Dear Hiring Manager" to make a better first impression.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Department Name] Director,
  • Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name],
  • Dear [Job Title] Search Committee,
  • Dear Human Resources Manager,

Your security guard cover letter intro: showing your interest in the role

On to the actual content of your security guard cover letter and the introductory paragraph .

The intro should be no more than two sentences long and presents you in the best light possible.

Use your security guard cover letter introduction to prove exactly what interests you in the role or organization. Is it the:

  • Company culture;
  • Growth opportunities;
  • Projects and awards the team worked on/won in the past year;
  • Specific technologies the department uses.

When writing your security guard cover letter intro, be precise and sound enthusiastic about the role.

Your introduction should hint to recruiters that you're excited about the opportunity and that you possess an array of soft skills, e.g. motivation, determination, work ethic, etc.

What to write in the middle or body of your security guard cover letter

Here's where it gets tricky.

Your security guard cover letter body should present you in the best light possible and, at the same time, differ from your resume.

Don't be stuck in making up new things or copy-pasting from your resume. Instead, select just one achievement from your experience.

Use it to succinctly tell a story of the job-crucial skills and knowledge this taught you.

Your security guard cover letter is the magic card you need to further show how any organization or team would benefit from working with you.

Closing remarks to end your security guard cover letter

Of course, you'll have to show gratitude to the recruiters, who have assessed your profile at the end of your security guard cover letter .

A "Thank you for the consideration" would work wonders, instead of the standard "Sincerely yours".

Do you want to make an even better impression?

Close off your security guard cover letter by promising how you see yourself excelling in the role and the positive impact you'd bring about.

A sentence that encourages some further action on the recruiter's end could also be a good way to close off the communication (e.g. provide your availability for an interview).

Is it beneficial to mention that you have no experience in your security guard cover letter?

Lacking professional experience isn't the end of the world for your security guard cover letter .

Just be honest that you may not have had roles in the industry, but bring about so much more.

Like, your transferable skills, attained thanks to your whole work and life experience (e.g. the skills your summer spent working abroad taught you).

Or, focus on what makes you, you, and that one past success that can help you stand out and impress recruiters (think of awards you've attained and how they've helped you become a better professional).

Alternatively, write about your passion and drive to land the job and the unique skill set you would bring to enhance the workplace culture.

Key takeaways

We hope this security guard cover letter writing guide has shown you how to:

  • Format your security guard cover letter with the mandatory sections (e.g. header, greeting, intro, body, and closing) and select the right font (P.S. It should be the same as the one you've used for your resume);
  • Substitute your lack of professional experience with your most noteworthy achievement, outside of work, or your dreams and passions;
  • Ensure recruiters have a more personalized experience by tailoring your cover letter not just to the role, but to them (e.g. writing their first/last name in the salutation, etc.);
  • Introducing your biggest achievement and the skills it has taught you in your security guard cover letter body;
  • Write no more than two sentences in your security guard cover letter introduction to set the right tone from the get-go.

Security Guard Cover Letter Examples (Guide & Tips)

A cover letter is a piece of literature that is drafted with the aim of showcasing the suitability of a person for the role of a security officer. It displays the academic, professional, and work experience of the applicant. This letter mainly serves to summarize the pieces of information contained in the resume.

Who Hires them?

All organizations require a security guard. At the same time, quite a number of private entities and individuals also leverage the services.

Top examples of these are:

Though companies have the liberty to hire the guards however they wish, they would better do so via a registered company.

The following reasons underlie that very fact:

Registered companies are regulated by relevant statutory institutions. They are subsequently more likely to hire and recommend only qualified and experienced guards. Moreover, they also stand to bear any liabilities that come along with recommending substandard guards.

Background checks

Before recommending or admitting any guard to their team, the security firms will usually carry out thorough background checks. This means you are more likely to tap into persons who are well-qualified and have the expertise you need to guard your premises effectively.

Though all security personnel do more or less similar tasks of guarding premises, their specific roles differ slightly from one organization to another one. The security firms understand this fact only too well. That is why they also match the agents with the firms that need their services.

Reduced expenses

By choosing to source your guards from a firm, you get to enjoy reduced operational expenses. This is because you won’t hire them on a full-time, pensionable contract. Instead, you will only strike a deal with the firm and have the guards stationed on your premises for a specific period of time.

The process of hiring personnel is a time-consuming venture. By placing your bet on a security firm, you get to cut down the time and effort you would otherwise spend to get the job done. The same also applies to the firing of the said personnel altogether.

Types of Jobs

There are four main categories of guard positions. These are the following:

Throughout my career, I have gained substantial expertise in monitoring surveillance equipment, conducting patrols, managing access control systems, and responding promptly to incidents. My tenure at Luxury Living Residences, a high-end apartment complex in Anytown, honed my skills in identifying potential security threats, enforcing property rules, and providing a visible security presence that deters unauthorized activities. My efforts were instrumental in reducing security incidents by 30% within the first year of my employment.

What attracts me to the Prestige Residential Complex is your commitment to providing a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for your residents. With a robust background in security operations, particularly within corporate environments, I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute to the safety and security of GlobalTech Innovations’ premises, employees, and assets.

With a solid foundation in security operations and a dedicated commitment to maintaining safety and order, I am eager to bring my expertise to serve and protect the premises and personnel of our government facilities.

Throughout my eight-year career in security, I have had the privilege of working in various settings, including commercial properties, educational institutions, and private events. However, it is my profound respect for public service and my desire to contribute to the safety of our community that draws me to this opportunity. My experience has equipped me with a comprehensive skill set that I believe aligns well with the unique challenges and responsibilities of securing government properties.

In my most recent role at SecureTech Solutions, I was responsible for overseeing the security operations of a large corporate campus. Key achievements include developing an updated emergency response plan, which was credited with significantly improving the campus’s preparedness for potential security threats.

Dear Mr. Richardson,

With over a decade of dedicated experience in high-level security operations, particularly in the corporate and executive protection arenas, I am well-prepared to offer the stringent, discreet, and comprehensive security measures that a leader of your stature requires.

My career has been marked by numerous assignments that demanded the utmost discretion and effectiveness, including providing security for C-level executives in the tech industry, where the blend of visibility and risk is particularly pronounced. For instance, while serving as the Lead Personal Security Officer for the CEO of TechGlobal Enterprises, I orchestrated a security protocol that seamlessly integrated with the executive’s international engagements, ensuring not only their physical safety but also the confidentiality of their communications and schedules. This role involved extensive risk assessment, coordination with local law enforcement across different countries, and the implementation of advanced surveillance measures.

I bring to the table expert knowledge in threat assessment, strategic security planning, and emergency response coordination. My technical skills are complemented by certifications in Advanced Defensive Tactics, Executive Protection Training from the esteemed Global Security Academy, and a Professional Driving Course focusing on evasive and defensive driving techniques.

Understanding the dynamic and demanding nature of your role at Innovatech Solutions Inc., I am committed to ensuring that security measures enhance rather than impede your operational efficiency. My approach is to customize security strategies that align with your corporate engagements, personal preferences, and lifestyle, ensuring a balance between rigorous security and personal freedom.

I am eager to discuss how my background, skills, and discreet approach to personal security can meet the specific needs of your position as CEO of Innovatech Solutions Inc. Awards, promotions, and special recognitions

Always see to it that you reveal any awards, promotions, and special recognitions that you have attained in your years of service. This will set you apart from the others and bolster your chances of getting the job offer.

Confidentiality agreements

While drafting the letter, be sure not to cross any boundaries. This job is very confidential and risky. By revealing past confidential agreements, you not only breach the trust of past employers but also send a wrong signal to this would-be employer.

VA Warns Congress that Benefits Payments Are at Risk Due to Projected $15 Billion Budget Shortfall

House Committee on Veterans' Affairs Chairman, Mike Bost

The Department of Veterans Affairs expects to be nearly $15 billion short of what it needs to pay for benefits and health care this year and next, in part because more veterans are using VA services than expected, officials told Congress this week.

An increase in benefits claims driven by the PACT Act could leave VA benefits accounts $2.9 billion short this year. Meanwhile, health care accounts could be nearly $12 billion short next year because of higher-than-expected staffing and prescription drug costs, among other factors.

In a statement Thursday morning, the VA said it is working with the White House and Congress to address the budget shortfalls in a way that doesn't harm veterans.

"Right now, due in large part to the historic PACT Act, VA is delivering more care and more benefits to more veterans than ever before," VA Press Secretary Terrence Hayes said in a statement about the budget shortfall. "These results are life-changing for veterans, their families, caregivers and survivors, and VA will continue to push to make sure that they get the care and benefits they deserve."

But a slideshow shown to Congress that was obtained by Military.com warned of potential disruptions to benefits payments if there's insufficient funding by the end of the fiscal year. And the chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee is blasting the department for "mismanagement."

"This represents by far the largest budget shortfall the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has experienced under any administration and a repudiation of the FY 2025 budget request that the Biden-Harris administration presented just four months ago," Chairman Mike Bost, R-Ill., wrote in a letter to VA Secretary Denis McDonough on Wednesday. "Not only have your chief financial officers thrown out the dollar amounts requested for many key accounts, they have abandoned many of the estimates and projections that underpinned their budget. This is not just fiscal mismanagement; it is strategic whiplash."

Bost demanded McDonough answer questions about the shortfall by July 26 and raised the specter of a subpoena if he does not comply.

For this year, the VA had expected to spend about $193 billion on benefits payments for veterans.

So far, disability benefits payments are slightly less than the Veterans Benefits Administration had projected for the year to date, but officials anticipate an increase by the end of the year, according to the slideshow obtained by Military.com.

In addition to an increase in disability benefits claims because of the PACT Act, officials expect an uptick in GI Bill payments because of a Supreme Court ruling in April that allows veterans to collect expanded education benefits. Payouts for Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits have already exceeded projections for the year to date, according to the slideshow.

"If VBA has insufficient funding available, then compensation and pension payments to over 7 million veterans and survivors and readjustment benefit payments to over 500,000 individuals that are scheduled to be delivered on October 1, 2024, are at risk," the slideshow said.

Meanwhile, in March, the VA requested nearly $370 billion for fiscal 2025, including about $134 billion in discretionary spending that is the main source of funding for medical care. While the overall budget request was a 13% increase from this year, the discretionary funding was a slight cut because of budget caps imposed by Congress .

Congress has yet to approve government funding for fiscal 2025, meaning lawmakers could still allocate more than the VA requested, but they also would have to reach a bipartisan agreement to ignore the previously approved budget caps.

The budget request anticipated that there would be a staffing cut of about 10,000 employees in the Veterans Health Administration. But the agency now expects to have about 20,000 more employees than the budget projected for next year, which is about 5,000 more than there are right now, according to the slideshow.

Pharmacy and prosthetic costs for next year could also be about $4 billion higher than expected if they follow the same trends in price increases as this year, the slideshow said.

More veterans using community care is also a factor in the budget shortfall, the VA said in the slideshow. The community care program allows veterans to see doctors outside the department using VA funding. The department had originally projected a 12% increase in community care costs next year, but now foresees a 16.5% increase.

In its statement on the budget shortfall, the VA cast the higher-than-expected costs as a sign of the success of the implementation of the PACT Act, which expanded care and benefits to millions of veterans exposed to toxins during their military service.

"Significant care growth has come from new benefits and enrollment opportunities from the PACT Act, in addition to unprecedented outreach efforts to veterans informing them of enrollment opportunities," Hayes said.

But in his letter, Bost slammed the VA for not budgeting for PACT Act-related increases that were widely expected. He also accused the VA of relying on budget "gimmicks" and argued that some of its explanations for increased costs were "spotty at best," including "speculation that demand for Ozempic and similar drugs may be the cause" for increased drug prices.

Bost also expressed alarm at the VA's "180-degree reversal" on staffing levels.

"I understand that priorities may change, but it boggles my mind how the roughly 10,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workforce reduction and the nationwide VHA hiring restrictions that you defended just a few months ago have already become a more than 22,000 FTE increase," he wrote. "Hiring quality health care workers is difficult enough without a constantly moving target."

7 Rejection Letter Samples to Send to Unsuccessful Applicants

10 min read · Updated on December 08, 2023

Ken Chase

Simplify the rejection notification process with these sample rejection letters

Whenever you hire a new employee, it almost always means that you selected them over other applicants. Obviously, the courteous thing to do is to let each of them know that you've decided not to offer them employment. But how should you notify them that they've been passed over for the position? For many companies, the answer is simple: send them a clear and professional rejection letter that confirms your decision. Unfortunately, writing those letters is not always the easiest thing to do.

In this post, we'll explain why rejection letters are important and offer some tips to help you craft your own rejection letter templates. We'll then provide seven sample employment rejection letters that you can customize to fit your company's needs.

Why send out a job rejection letter?

Obviously, sending out rejection letters to applicants does take up precious time, but there are good reasons why companies do this. First, a polite rejection notice is considered good etiquette, since it lets the candidate know that the job has been filled. That confirmation shows that you respect their time enough to help them avoid wasting it on a job that's no longer available. It also helps to avoid any candidate confusion by helping them to understand why they weren't selected for hire.

Companies that develop a habit of sending out formal rejection letters can also help themselves, by promoting their own commitment to respectful professionalism. This can leave a positive impact on the rejected candidate, as well as anyone else they might talk to about their job search experience.

Why use template rejection letters?

Template rejection letters can be a great way to save time and ensure a consistent approach to your communication with unsuccessful candidates. They can help you to provide uniform answers to explain why a candidate was rejected, as well as advice that you think may help the candidate as they continue their job search. Well-constructed rejection letters that offer helpful feedback to candidates can help to soften their disappointment, while providing useful information that can benefit their careers.

How to write your own employer rejection letters

So, how do you write a positive and helpful employment rejection letter? The following tips can help you to determine what to include in your template letters, and the best tone and method for addressing rejection in the clearest and most concise manner possible.

Don't delay the rejection. Once you've decided to move forward with a specific candidate, notify rejected applicants as soon as possible. Remember that they may also be pursuing other open positions, so you're doing them a favor by letting them know that your company's job has been filled.

You can send the rejection via email rather than by regular mail service. While a mailed letter might seem more formal, most candidates will appreciate receiving the news as soon as possible – and email is always quicker.

Keep your rejection letters short. No candidate wants to read through a lengthy explanation about why they didn't measure up to expectations. At the same time, though, your letter should include enough detail to ensure that you explain the decision.

Try to be as positive as possible. The rejection will be disappointing for the candidate, so there's no need to pile on with negative feedback or other criticism.

As a rule, keep your letter limited to no more than three short paragraphs. The first one can simply thank them for their interest and let them know that you've decided not to hire them.

The second paragraph can include some positive affirmation, by focusing on anything that impressed you during their interview, and perhaps cite a reason why they've been rejected. If you might consider them for a different job in the future, tell them that too.

Finally, your third paragraph should simply thank them again and wish them well in their efforts to land the right job in the future.

Seven rejection letter samples

Below, we've included seven example rejection letter templates that you can customize and send to unsuccessful applicants. This selection of templates covers a variety of different approaches for rejecting candidates, so you can choose one or several depending on your company's needs.

1.     Generic rejection letter template

Dear Mr / Ms [Applicant's name],

Thank you for submitting your application and resume for our [title of the position they applied for] position. We deeply appreciate you taking the time to reach out to us. However, after reviewing your application, we have decided not to move forward with your application.

As you probably know, we received a tremendous amount of interest in this position, so this was an extremely difficult decision for our hiring team. Unfortunately, we concluded that your impressive array of skills and achievements were not what we were looking for at this time.

We want to thank you again for your interest in working with us and wish you the best of success in your future career endeavors.

[Your name and company name]

2.     Application rejection letter template

Thank you for submitting your application. We appreciate your interest in a position as a [job title] in our company and the effort you invested in reaching out to us. Unfortunately, our review of the many applications and resumes we received in response to our job posting has moved us to select another candidate for the role.

We do want to commend you for your impressive skill set and accomplishments, and hope that you will consider a different role with us at some future point in time. We will keep your resume on file and may reach out to you if we have another opening for a job that better aligns with your unique talents.

Again, thank you for getting in touch with us and providing us with your resume and application. We wish you luck and much success in your job search efforts.

Warmest regards,

3.     Screening stage rejection letter template

Thank you for your resume and application submission and for participating in our initial screening process. Unfortunately, our screening suggests that you may not be the best fit for this position or our company at this time. As a result, we have decided to decline moving forward with our interview process.

We should note that your skills, experience, and other qualifications are very close to what we need for this position. However, our screening results found that [provide reason for rejection, such as failed background check, failed drug test, etc.]. Those results led us to focus on other candidates to fill this position.

Again, we applaud your credentials and wish you nothing but the best in your job search efforts. Thanks for reaching out to us and good luck throughout your career.

Best regards,

4.     Early-stage interview rejection letter template

We truly appreciate you taking the time to meet with our hiring team to interview for our open [title of the job] position. I speak for everyone on the team when I say that we were really impressed with your overall performance and believe that you have a lot to offer to any company that hires you. Regrettably, however, we have decided to decline moving forward in our interview process.

While your interview was solid and compelling, and your resume qualifications are close to what we were looking for, we have decided to hire another candidate whose skills more closely align with our needs for this position. Make no mistake, though – this was a difficult decision.

Since we were so impressed with your candidacy, we will keep your resume on file and contact you if any other opportunities arise in the future. Until then, we wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors and hope for your continued career success.

5.     Final stage interview rejection letter template

Thank you so much for your time and attention throughout our application and interview process. We appreciate the patience you extended to everyone on our team during all [number of interviews] of your meetings with us. Unfortunately, after reviewing the results of our assessments of every candidate for the position, we have decided not to offer you the role.

Everyone on our team agrees that your skills and experience are beyond question, so this decision is in no way a reflection on your qualifications. Our decision was based solely on an evaluation of every candidate's experience and how well we believe they might fit with the specific needs of that open position. Regrettably, that decision process led us to another candidate.

We would appreciate it if you would allow us to contact you if or when another position opens, that we believe might be a better fit for your core competencies. Again, we want to thank you for your commitment to the process and extend our best wishes for your future success.

With our best regards,

6.     Post-phone call rejection letter template

Dear Mr /Ms [Applicant's name],

This letter is to follow up on our recent phone call with you confirming that we will not be hiring you for the position of [name of position the applicant applied for]. I wanted to personally contact you and let you know how much we all appreciated having the opportunity to get to know you throughout our interview process.

Though you have already been notified of our decision in that brief call, I still want to take a few moments to say how impressed we were with your qualifications and interview skills. We all recognize the potential value our company could enjoy if you were a member of our team.

Thank you again for your interest in our company. We wish you luck in your career journey.

7.     Rejection letter template advising candidate to reapply in the future

Thank you so much for interviewing for our position as a [job title]. Your qualifications are impressive, which made our hiring decision extremely difficult. However, the team here have decided to offer the job to another candidate.

Still, we want to let you know that we recognize your talents and are confident that you would do well in a different role within our organisation, if you focused on developing [cite a skill that the candidate needs to enhance]. With those added skills , we would be eager to consider you for a different role in our company.

Thanks again for your dedication and interest in joining our firm. Good luck to you in your job search!

Still, it's something that every company should do, so it's important to streamline the process as much as possible. Harris' border work was on 'root causes' of migration; she wasn't in charge | Fact check

application letter for a post of guard

The claim: Kamala Harris was 'put in charge of the border'

A July 21 Instagram post ( direct link , archive link ) by Donald Trump Jr. blames Vice President Kamala Harris for the country's immigration problems.

"She was put in charge of the border and we saw the worst invasion of illegals in our history!!!" reads part of the post, which is a screenshot of a post from X, formerly Twitter.

Similar posts on Threads have described Harris as the Biden administration's "border czar."

The Instagram post was liked more than 200,000 times in a day.

More from the Fact-Check Team: How we pick and research claims | Email newsletter | Facebook page

Our rating: False

The post exaggerates the vice president's role in addressing migration at the southern border. Harris was never put in charge of the border or made "border czar," immigration experts said. President Joe Biden tasked Harris with leading the administration's diplomatic efforts addressing the "root causes" of migration in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

Harris led effort addressing 'root causes' of migration in Central America

Early in his presidency, Biden tasked Harris with addressing the “root causes” of migration in Central America. The assignment came out of an executive order Biden issued in February 2021 that sought to reduce migration from the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, where gang violence, trafficking networks and economic insecurity have caused people to flee.

But the vice president’s role was more limited than being put in charge of the southern border, or being named a so-called “border czar,” immigration experts said.

"VP Harris was never made the border czar or charged with managing the border," Andrew Salee , president of the Migration Policy Institute , said in an email. "That role has always been held by the secretary of Homeland Security . She was asked to be the chief diplomatic officer with Central American countries at a time when most of the increase in unauthorized immigration was coming from three countries in Central America and to help lead a private investment strategy in the region."

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas himself noted the different responsibilities between himself and Harris in June 2021 comments at the El Paso, Texas, border.

"The vice president is leading our nation’s efforts to address the root causes – that fundamental question of why people leave their homes," Mayorkas said. "And it is my responsibility as the secretary of Homeland Security to address the security and management of our border."

In March 2021, Biden announced Harris would lead the administration's diplomatic efforts with the Northern Triangle countries to stem migration to the U.S. southern border and work with these nations to enhance migration enforcement at their borders. Harris said at the time that the administration "must address the root causes that – that cause people to make the trek, as the president has described, to come here."

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick , policy director at the American Immigration Council , said the "root causes" work Harris took on is distinct from border policy because it focuses on different problems and targets.

"Border policy focuses on individuals who have already made the decision to leave home and have made it to the U.S.-Mexico border and aims to either prevent them or to quickly process them for humanitarian relief or deportation once they cross," Reichlin-Melnick said in an email. "By contrast, 'root causes' policy focuses on individuals who have not left their homes yet, and aims to convince them to stay in their home countries either through economic development – which discourages migration for economic opportunities – or through reduction of violence and persecution that forces people to seek protection elsewhere."

The White House released the administration's " Root Causes Strategy " in July 2021. Its implementation was ongoing as of March when the vice president and the Partnership for Central America , a non-governmental organization, jointly announced $1 billion in new private-sector commitments to address the underlying conditions leading to migration in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. The public-private partnership has generated more than $5.2 billion since May 2021 , the White House said.

Fact check : Joe Biden dropped out of presidential race but is finishing term

Elina Treyger , a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation whose research includes migration and immigration enforcement, also said Harris' diplomatic role with the Central American countries "is in no way a 'border czar'-like position." Treyger said border policy involves many other issues such as enforcement policies, how to process migrants expressing fear of prosecution or torture and how to allocate resources at the border.

U.S. Border Patrol encounters with migrants at the southern border have soared under the Biden administration . Illegal crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border hit a record high of 2.2 million in 2022, and the number of people taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol has reached the highest levels in the agency's history under Biden, the Washington Post reported .

After a bipartisan border security bill failed to advance in Congress, Biden issued a directive in June to turn away migrants who do not enter the country through legal ports of entry when the number of crossings is high.

Trump, the son of former President Donald Trump, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A grand vision guides unprecedented Opening Ceremonies down the Seine

Director Thomas Jolly liberated his Opening Ceremonies for the 2024 Paris Olympics from the confines of the stadium. The results were mixed.

application letter for a post of guard

Take it from someone who’s been shoved into his share of lockers: Sports and the arts aren’t always the best of friends.

But every four years, the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Games force them to coexist under one roof, and I suddenly become a huge sports fan.

I love the Opening Ceremonies for their central ethos of global goodwill. I enjoy them for the massive performance of cooperation they represent. I soften at the little human stories and collective triumphs tucked into the procession. I crave the quadrennial geography lesson.

But the main reason I like the Opening Ceremonies so much is simple. I’m an opera fan.

Certainly, the Opening Ceremonies aren’t opera — but they’re also not not opera. Pull out the checklist: There’s music (and lots of it). There’s a cast of hundreds (or in this case, thousands) of performers. There’s grand spectacle (courtesy of director Thomas Jolly). There are fabulous costumes. There’s a narrative arc de triumph. There’s the ambient promise of tragedy, comedy, agony and victory. There are fanfares, themes and anthemic leitmotifs. There are divas (Celine Dion, Lady Gaga and Aya Nakamura among them). They take, like, four hours. And, most of the time, they make you feel good.

Like opera, the Opening Ceremonies are everything at once — a grand collision of aesthetics and athletics.

This year’s Opening Ceremonies — billed as the largest in the history of the Games — are helmed by 42-year-old actor and director Jolly, whom French newspaper Le Monde has referred to as “the Peter Pan of theater” for a career ranging from Shakespearean drama (“ Henry VI ”) to high-energy musicals (“ Starmania ”).

Paris Olympics medal tracker

application letter for a post of guard

In interviews , Jolly has described France as “a long story — a story that keeps expanding and rewriting itself and is very much alive,” a reticent reference to the nation’s history of protest, its “constant questioning” of its own identity, and its most recent swerve into political violence. Jolly’s production aims to identify the “bigger us” — an operatic endeavor if ever there was one.

This long story demanded a grander venue than the Stade de France, so Jolly opted to send the whole show down the Seine: A procession of nearly 100 boats traveled 3.8 miles from east to west down the river, starting at the Austerlitz Bridge and ending at the Trocadéro (originally constructed for the 1878 World’s Fair).

This employment of the Seine as a narrative device twisted together two typically distinct elements of the Opening Ceremonies — the show itself and the Parade of Nations, which boat by boat introduces the over 10,000 waving athletes to the world.

As the alphabetized nations floated by, performances broke out along the banks: A black-plumed Lady Gaga made a leggy entrance behind a heart of pink feathers to sing a jaunty take on Zizi Jeanmaire’s “ Mon truc en plumes .” On the Pont des Arts, the French-Malian singer Aya Nakamura led the orchestra of the French Republican Guard and 36 choristers from the French Army in a medley of her hits “Pookie” and “Djadja” as well as Charles Aznavour’s “For Me … Formidable.” The Polish countertenor and breakdancer Jakub Józef Orliński appeared for a sizable solo that indulged both of his talents (and inspired dozens of confused tweets).

And while Jolly’s musical program was a box-checking jukebox of every genre imaginable, an understated through-line paid tribute to a lineage of French composers.

A line of dancers kicked and twirled to a hyped-up version of the cancan from Jacques Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld.” Heavy metal band Gojira accompanied the mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti in a pyrotechnic “Habanera” from Georges Bizet’s “Carmen.” Camille Saint-Saens’s “Danse Macabre” accompanied a segment trailing a masked torchbearer through the Louvre.

Under pouring rain, pianist Alexandre Kantorow performed Maurice Ravel’s “Jeux d’eau.” Paul Dukas’s “L’Apprenti sorcier” scored a fantastical section that winked at Georges Méliès’s “ Le Voyage Dans la Lun ” (or “A Trip to the Moon”). And mezzo-soprano Axelle Saint-Cirel offered a soaring version of Claude Joseph Rouget De Lisle’s “La Marseillaise” — a.k.a. the French national anthem.

By the time the United States appeared — in the penultimate spot in accordance with Los Angeles hosting the 2028 games — the City of Light was plunged into darkness. Once the parade was complete, over lowing trombones, Floriane Issert of the National Gendarmerie rode a robotic silver steed down the surface of the Seine, bearing the Olympic Flags and lighting 37 giant pairs of dove wings fixed to the bridges.

It was a striking visual, but also one of several times Jolly’s liberation of the ceremony conveyed more about his own outsize ambitions than his nation’s identity.

Several gestures hinted at making larger, possibly poignant statements: Bleary-eyed dancers clubbing indifferently atop an LED volcano. Juliette Armanet singing “Imagine” from a drifting dystopian barge with accompanist Sofiane Pamart playing a flaming piano. The French flag formed from tufts of colored smoke slowly pulling itself apart in the rain.

Still, Jolly’s staging was at its best in its final act (“Eternite”): The Radio France Choir and 90 musicians from the French National Orchestra lending heartfelt oomph to Spyridon Samaras’s “Olympic Anthem”; the athletes gathered beneath the Eiffel Tower, which put on a techno-charged light show; and the surprise U-turn taken by the torch back up the Seine (in a speedboat with Carl Lewis, Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal and Nadia Comăneci).

His parting vision — removed from the crowds, relying only on the beauty of Paris for spectacle — was simple, sweet and satisfying. Generations of French Olympians passing the torch in quick succession and pouring rain before lighting the strangest cauldron I’ve ever seen at the Games. (I’ll leave it to the French to determine the precise significance of a hot-air balloon on fire.)

If Jolly’s production ultimately felt too diffuse and thin on substance to satisfy my operatic appetites, nearly all was forgiven by his big finish: The surprise return of Celine Dion — a steely, defiant take on Édith Piaf’s “L’Hymne à L’Amour,” and her first performance since revealing her diagnosis with stiff person syndrome — made for the grandest of finales, and an icon for the ceremony itself: art as Olympian feat.

Hey job seekers — hiring managers are onto your ChatGPT-written applications

  • Job seekers using AI-generated applications face detection and potential rejection by employers.
  • Companies note an uptick in AI-written job applications, complicating the hiring process.
  • Experts suggest customizing AI assistance to stand out — using it as an editor instead of a writer.

Insider Today

If you're hoping to use ChatGPT to get a leg up on job applications, you might just be shooting yourself in the foot.

While companies have been leveraging AI to automatically weed out résumés, job seekers have begun responding with chatbot-generated applications to keep up — and employers are noticing.

Jakob Knutzen, cofounder and CEO of video collaboration platform Butter, said he received around 450 applicants for a product designer position. But Knutzen told Business Insider he was able to detect what he believed was ample usage of ChatGPT-written responses to the form's three questions.

"The formulations were incredibly similar and used a bunch of phrases that I would never imagine people using," he said.

When Knutzen took his concerns to a LinkedIn post , other employers reported seeing a similar trend of a spike in AI-written job applications.

Christina Hallman, who is head of demand generation for cybersecurity risk management company Outpost24, recently said she received over 250 applications for two open positions.

She told Insider she estimated that 45% of the optional cover letters were AI-generated.

"I went over to ChatGPT and I put in our live job posting, and I said give me a cover letter," Hallman told Insider. "And it spit out almost the identical template that I was receiving time and time again."

She said that it didn't necessarily eliminate the candidate from the running, but when it came down to choosing between an application that used a ChatGPT-generated cover letter and a similar one that didn't, the latter would be hired.

"It just ended being like, well, it's not helping you," she said. "It's better to have just not attached anything."

Related stories

Hallman, who said she has a decade of hiring experience, said that she's seen a noticeable increase in the use of AI in applicants over the past one to two years.

And it's likely going to keep climbing as ChatGPT and other AI tools become more accessible — and popular.

A 2023 study conducted by iCIMS found that 47% of college seniors were interested in using ChatGPT or other AI bots to write their résumé and cover letters, while 25% of Gen Z who were surveyed said they already have.

Some recruiters have considered creating "AI-proof" questions, such as requiring an introductory Loom video. Others have even set chatbot traps by sneaking hidden instructions for LLMs that show up in the applicant's response.

Although Knutzen said his company did contemplate using videos or other questions that could cut down on the likelihood of AI-generated responses, they decided against it due to concerns that the "barrier for entry would be too high."

However, some comments under Knutzen's post said that job seekers were simply leveling the playing field with recruiters — especially with an increasingly tough job market .

One person wrote, "When companies use automated systems to decide who is worthy of an interview, what do they expect applicants to do?"

Over 97% of Fortune 500 companies use automated hiring systems , according to a 2023 study conducted by Jobscan.

"I think it's more of a frustration with the application process overall," Knutzen said. "I don't think that companies are respecting the process for applicants."

Knutzen, who said his company does not use ATSs, points out that many companies tend to ghost candidates or send an automated rejection, which can discourage job seekers.

"If you don't get a lot of feedback on the applications that you send, then you begin thinking that they don't matter," he said. "If the company doesn't think it's important, why should I?"

However, Knutzen stresses that the issue isn't necessarily the use of AI but rather using it "as a writer and not an editor."

Hallman said she "fully expects" people to use AI in their jobs and applications to save time, but she warns candidates against relying on it blindly.

"It's not the use of AI that's the problem, it's the lack of customization that is coupled with it," Hallman said. "If you're going to use AI, I think you need to use it really intentionally."

She said that applicants using the same chatbot-written responses become lost among their identical competitors.

"You need to have that human checkpoint," Hallman said. "Or it will just be a sea of everyone spitting out the same thing."

What We Know About the Global Microsoft Outage

By Eshe Nelson and Danielle Kaye

Eshe Nelson reported from London and Danielle Kaye from New York.

Across the world, critical businesses and services including airlines, hospitals, train networks and TV stations, were disrupted on Friday by a global tech outage affecting Microsoft users.

In many countries, flights were grounded, workers could not get access to their systems and, in some cases, customers could not make card payments in stores. While some of the problems were resolved within hours, many businesses, websites and airlines continued to struggle to recover.

What happened?

A series of outages rippled across the globe as information displays, login systems and broadcasting networks went dark.

The problem affecting the majority of services was caused by a flawed update by CrowdStrike , an American cybersecurity firm, whose systems are intended to protect users from hackers. Microsoft said on Friday that it was aware of an issue affecting machines running “CrowdStrike Falcon.”

But Microsoft had also said there was an earlier outage affecting U.S. users of Azure, its cloud service system. Some users may have been affected by both. Even as CrowdStrike sent out a fix, some systems were still affected by midday in the United States as businesses needed to make manual updates to their systems to resolve the issue.

George Kurtz, the president and chief executive of CrowdStrike, said on Friday morning that it could take some time for some systems to recover.
