Collaborative assessment: Group submissions in Canvas

Canvas features a range of useful tools that facilitate group and collaborative work between students. These tools include collaborative Pages, Collaborations – online shared Google Docs or Office 365 documents, and Canvas Groups. In this post we are going to focus on Group assignments in Canvas.

group assignment submission canvas

In order to create group assignments in your Canvas module you will first need to set up student Groups. Groups are effectively a ‘mini module’ within your Canvas module site which provide students with their own tools for collaborative work. To find out more about Groups see our previous post Canvas Highlights – 2. Groups and to learn how to set up groups see How do I automatically create groups in a group set? or How do I manually create groups in a group set?

Once your student groups are created you can then move on to setting up your group assignment. To do this first go to Assignments in the module menu where you can create a new assignment. For Canvas assignment students can submit a range of content including any type of file, video or audio recordings, or a website URL. You then simply tick the box to indicate ‘This is a group assignment’ and select the Group Set that you have previously created.

screenshot of assignment settings

Students would then choose one group member to submit on behalf of their group, with Canvas applying this submission to each member of the group. You can then provide feedback and a mark on this one submission rather than marking the same piece of work four or five times, saving you time when marking. Once marks are released, this mark and feedback is then provided to all members of the group. If needed, for example if there is a peer marking element in the assessment, you can choose to assign marks individually to each student.

There are a number of different ways that this type of assessment can be used, this could be:

  • Formative group work – students can submit draft work or formative tasks throughout a module, for example this could be weekly tasks associated with that week’s readings.
  • Summative group work – this could include group projects, reports or recorded presentations. Please remember that these marks must also be formally entered into Sussex Direct.
  • Submission of additional/supporting documents – for example slides to accompany a face-to-face presentation.

Canvas  Groups  are a way for instructors to organize students within a course for group assignments, group discussions, or other collaborative work. The Groups tool creates course-like areas in Canvas that include the following navigational options:

  • Announcements
  • Discussions
  • BigBlueButton (Formerly Conferences)
  • Collaborations

Managing Group Sets

Managing groups, managing group enrollment, managing group activities & content.

A  Group Set  is a collection of groups. A new Group Set is needed for every assignment that calls for a new grouping of students. When getting started with Group Sets, learn to:

  • Create a Group Set with the Canvas guide  How do I add a group set in a course?
  • Edit a Group Set with the Canvas guide  How do I edit a group set in a course?

Do not delete a group set after submissions have been made by any group in that set.

Use unique group names in order to ensure students can identify which course the group is from, as all of their groups are listed in a single place outside of the course.

Do not delete a group after a submission has been made by that group.

Groups  are the specific groupings of students within a Group Set.  When getting started with Groups, learn to:

  • Automatically create groups in a group set with the Canvas guide  How do I automatically create groups in a group set?
  • Manually create groups in a group set with the Canvas guide  How do I manually create groups in a group set?
  • Create self sign-up groups in a group set with the Canvas guide  How do I create self sign-up groups in a group set?
  • Allow students to create groups with the Canvas guide  How do I allow students to create their own student groups?

Students can only belong to one group in a group set. This precludes them from taking part in group work or group discussions in Canvas in multiple groups for the same assignment/activity.

Do not change membership in a group after a submission has been made by that group.

When enrolling students in Groups, learn to:

  • Automatically enroll students in groups with the Canvas guide  How do I automatically assign students to groups?
  • Manually enroll students in groups with the Canvas guide  How do I manually assign students to groups?
  • Assign a student leader to a group with the Canvas guide  How do I assign a student leader to a group?
  • Change group enrollments with the Canvas guide  How do I move a student into a different group?
  • Prevent students from changing self sign-up group enrollment with the Canvas guide  How do I prevent students from switching groups in self sign-up groups?

While students can manage their Group spaces in Canvas, instructors are able to generate activities for groups and view group content. When managing group activities and content, learn to:

  • Grade Group Assignments in the SpeedGrader with the Canvas guide  How do I grade group assignments in SpeedGrader?
  • Create a graded Group Discussion with the Canvas guide  How do I assign a graded discussion to a course group?
  • View a group’s files with the Canvas guide  How do I view group files as an instructor?
  • View a group’s content and student group activity with the Canvas guide  How do I view content and student activity within a group as an instructor?

Group Assignments for Faculty/Staff/TAs

Canvas has built-in functionality that allows instructors to create and assign group projects to students.

It’s important to make sure your Group Project assignment is set up correctly before students begin submitting. Once students have submitted, your options for changing or mitigating things become limited. Your LSP or the Central Courseware team will be happy to work with you to make sure your assignment achieves your goals.

On This Page

Setting up your group assignment.

There are two steps to setting up a Group Assignment in Canvas. Both of these steps must be set up for the Group Assignment to work correctly.

Step One- Add Your Group Set in the “People” Tab

Create your group set in the “Groups” tab before the assignment opens and students begin submitting.

Groups must be set up in the “People” tab before students submit an assignment. Otherwise, inconsistent behaviors will occur. If you’re not sure which students will be in which group (for example, the add/drop period isn’t over yet), you can create the groups sets without putting students into them. You can later manually or randomly place students into groups, or have students sign up for groups of their choice . It’s also possible to adjust things like the max number of group members later by editing the “Split [number] of students per group” option from the drop down menu”.

Step Two – Create the Group Assignment

Follow the directions for creating a group assignment in Canvas , making sure the box for “group assignment” is checked.

By default, Group Assignments will assign the same grade to all members of the group. If you want to assign grades individually to each student in the group, make sure to select the checkbox.

Troubleshooting & Best Practices

It’s important to set up your groups before students begin submitting to the assignment. If your groups weren’t set up before students began submitting to your Group Assignment, your assignment may not behave as expected.

Best Practices

If you need to adjust your Groups for any reason (for example, a student drops the course), you can do one of two things: –  Edit the assignment to grade each student individually , then use the modified Group set. OR  – Clone the Group set , rename the Group, and have students make any changes to self-signup group membership in the new group set. (Recommended) *Please note that the assignment needs to have self sign up enabled and the People tab must be active in the Course navigation for students to be able to join a new group.

If you’re copying a course from a previous semester (for example, using the “course import tool”), it’s important to know that the option for “projects groups” won’t automatically have any Groups associated with it in the new course. Additionally, it can be difficult to know which assignments are associated with a Group Project in a copied course.

Troubleshooting

If your groups weren’t set up before students began submitting to your Group Assignment, your assignment may not behave as expected. Below are some quick fixes to common issues you may see.

Students will see whatever happens in their group only AFTER they are placed in a group. Keep this in mind if you are troubleshooting a Group Projects assignment. Make sure all students are in a Group before grading.

  • Edit the assignment
  • Make the Discussion board ungraded
  • Uncheck the box for groups
  • Save your changes
  • Edit the assignment to make it a graded discussion again
  • Click “save”.

Keep in mind that if a group is assigned to a discussion board, only the group members can read and comment on the same board. Each group will have its own board. This is a different concept than a group assignment where one student submits on behalf of the entire group.

Solution: Edit the assignment, checking the box for “ Assign Grades to Each Student Individually ”, and click “Save”.

Using group assignments in Canvas

Group assignments can be a great way to foster student collaboration and develop a sense of community in online learning.

When creating group assignments in Canvas, the basic steps are:

  • Create a Group Set your subject. This will allow you to determine the groups before you go ahead with creating the assignment itself. You can manually assign students to each group yourself using the  Bulk group membership tool or allow students to create their own groups.
  • Create the group assignment. When creating an assignment you will have the option to tick 'This is a group assignment'. When you tick this box, you can then choose the Group set as per the previous step.
  • Decide whether students will be graded as a group, or individually.  After checking the box 'This is a group assignment' you will also see a setting 'Assign Grades to Each Student Individually'. If you check this box, you will be able to allocate a different mark to each member of a group. If you leave the box unchecked, when you mark and give feedback for one of the students in the group, or annotate the paper, the mark and all feedback will automatically populate for the other students in the group.

Please note!

Ensure that you do not change the membership of groups *after* you have created the assignment. This will cause the assignment to revert to an *individual* assignment and cannot be reversed!

Facilitating group work using canvas.

Group projects, presentations, demonstrations, and similar assignments can be valuable learning experiences for students as collaboration affords shared knowledge building amongst peers. The following process is a straightforward approach to structuring group work via Canvas. For more complex tasks, consider adding additional guidance and checkpoints to ensure high-quality final products.

Note: Due to physical distancing requirements in our current teaching and learning situation, group work should be conducted primarily online.

  • Instead of randomly assigning students to groups, consider constructing groups based on students' availability. You can either ask students to provide their typical availability via a Canvas Quiz then manually assign them to a group or allow them to self sign-up to a group based on their schedules.
  • Creating groups via People automatically provides a space in Canvas for students to coordinate their work and allows you to collect one deliverable per group.
  • You may allow students to complete projects using non-IU technologies, but to ensure access and support equity, always provide a basic process that only requires IU supported technologies.
  • The complete set of instructions and grading criteria are provided in the Assignment description.
  • Submission type is set to "Online" and the appropriate "Online entry options" are selected.
  • If you would like the ability to assign different scores to students in the same group or provide differentiated feedback, select the "Assign grades to each student individually" checkbox.
  • A due date is set and matches the information provided in the course syllabus.
  • If an availability date is set, it is at minimum two weeks before the due date.

Note: If the assignment is a paper or essay, you may wish to enable Turnitin Plagiarism Review .

  • This could be a graded or ungraded assignment. The intention is to create accountability for progress as well as an opportunity for formative feedback from the instructor.
  • Consider if you would like to provide individual or group feedback at this checkpoint then select the appropriate options when creating the assignment in Canvas.
  • If eliciting feedback via an Assignment, do not select "This is a Group Assignment." Consider setting "Display grade as" option to Complete/Incomplete for ease of grading.
  • If eliciting feedback via the Quizzes tool, select the "Graded Survey" for the Quiz type. Collecting feedback via a Graded Survey allows you to provide points for completion and view student survey responses in Speedgrader .

Note: If collaboration and/or joint knowledge construction are not germane to the course learning outcomes, consider modifying the task to an individual project or presentation in efforts to reduce the logistical coordination and psychological load required in group work.

The Assignments page is arguably the most central to successful Canvas course utilization.

  • It controls the columns in the gradebook and gradebook calculations.
  • It displays all things gradable, including assignments, gradable discussions, and quizzes. Each can be created in Assignments.
  • Dates used in the syllabus and calendar are rapidly edited in Assignments.

Use assignment groups to achieve:

  • Assignment categorization
  • Drop lowest  n  scores
  • Drop highest  n  scores
  • Never drop  x  assignment
  • Weighting of grades

Canvas creates a group called "Assignments" by default, but you can change the group title or create additional groups. Because the default group is Assignments, Canvas places all assignment types into that group. When you are creating a new assignment, graded discussion, or quiz you will have the option to designate it as belonging to a previously created assignment group.

How Do I Use Assignment Groups in Canvas?

In Canvas, assignment groups allow you to organize your assignments into discrete groups. For example, you may want to group all the essay assignments in your course within one assignment group titled ‘Essays’.

Assignment groups allow you to leverage a weighted grade scheme in your Canvas course. A weighted grade scheme allows you to distribute percentages of a student’s final grade across these assignment groups. Following our previous example, you may want the Essays group to account for 30% of the final grade.

By default, Grade weighting is turned off for all Canvas courses. To turn on Grade weighting, please follow Canvas’ tutorial for weighting final grades based on Assignment Groups.

How do grade weights get distributed across an Assignment Group?

In Canvas, the weight of an assignment group is distributed proportionally across the assignments inside it. Because of this, assignments worth different points will be weighted differently if they are in the same assignment group.

Here’s an example of an assignment group in Canvas. This group is worth 30% of the total grade and contains three assignments with different point values. The table further below outlines how the assignment group weight of 30% is distributed across the three Assignments.

group assignment submission canvas

Here, since Essay Two is out of 200 points, it will count two times more than Essays One and Three.

Assignment Point Value Proportion Weight (% of grade)
Essay One 100 100/400 total points .25 * 30% = 7.5%
Essay Two 200 200/400 total points .50 * 30% = 15%
Essay Three 100 100/400 total points .25 * 30% = 7.5%

***assignment group weight distribution for assignments with differing point totals.

If you want all assignments within a given assignment group to be worth the same weight, you have two options:

1. Make all assignments inside an assignment group worth the same number of points, as shown below.

group assignment submission canvas

***In this scenario, we have changed Essay Two’s point value from 200 to 100 points. Since all point values in this assignment Group are the same, each Assignment will be worth the same, 10% in this case.

2. Create new assignment groups for any outlier assignments if you cannot or do not want to change their point value.

***In this scenario, we have not changed Essay Two’s point values, so we will need to put it in its own assignment group worth 10% and change the first assignment group to be worth 20% so that all Essays are now worth 10% of the total grade.

Canvas @ Yale

  • Canvas Discussions: Overview

Updated on Mar 22, 2022

The Canvas Discussions tool provides instructors and students the opportunity to contribute and discuss asynchronously. The native Canvas tool can be used to coordinate topic-driven or open ended conversations which instructors can optionally link to the Grades area for grading purposes.

Table of Contents

This article will address the following information:

Why use Canvas Discussions?

Use cases for canvas discussions, how do i use canvas discussions in my course, what will my students see, additional resources.

The Discussions tool allows the instructor to create discussion topics for students to contribute to in an asynchronous manner outside of class time.  Instructors can use discussions as a way of encouraging students to think about and discuss topics in preparation for the in-class discussion, or they can be used to encourage collaborative reflection on a topic after it is presented in class.

The asynchronous environment can also be beneficial to students who are less likely to participate in live, real-time discussions (students who are typically more shy or prefer to have time to think and carefully craft responses). The asynchronous aspect of the Discussions tool also provides a platform where all students can share their opinions, which is typically not feasible with in-class discussion due to time constraints.

Canvas Discussions are a great way to encourage student collaboration. Typical implementations of Discussions may include:

  • Pre-Class discussion
  • Post-Class discussion
  • Reflection / Opinion – ask students to read and then reflect on forum.
  • Asynchronous Debates – ask students to defend or refute arguments.
  • Peer sharing / Peer review assignments – instructors can use Discussions for assignments that they would like to be openly available to classmates to view / comment on.
  • Group Collaboration – discussion topics can be assigned to Canvas Group Sets when set up as "group discussions." Instructors set up a single discussion topic which is automatically duplicated to create one version of the topic for each group within the Group Set. The individual group topics are then set up so that only the members of the group can read, write, and reply to their fellow group members.
  • FAQs – Instructors can encourage students to post their questions to an FAQ Discussion topic where instructors, TAs, and other classmates can reply.

Instructors and TA level users can always access the tool to create activities, but the tool can be hidden from students if desired. To learn more about how to use Canvas Discussions to facilitate your online course work, please reference:

  • Creating a Discussion Board
  • How do I grade a graded discussion in the Speedgrader? (Vendor Guide)
  • Due Dates versus Display Dates

If needed, you can set up multiple due dates for each activity. This may be useful if you have Discussion Sections that meet on different days and the due dates should match accordingly or if an individual student(s) needs a different due date.

For students who are in different time zones, have personal obligations that conflict, or experience technical difficulties, you can use the additional due dates to help accommodate their unique situation.

  • How do I assign a graded discussion to everyone in a course?
  • How do I assign a graded discussion to an individual student?
  • How do I assign a graded discussion to a course section?
  • How do I assign a graded discussion to a course group?

The actual view your students see will depend on the settings you set on your discussions.  Below you can see what a student would see for a normal discussion topic.

  • The instructor's Discussion Board " Description" is providing the discussion prompt / instructions. This may also be thought of as the initial post in the Discussion.
  • The " Reply " button to the initial Discussion Board prompt set forth by the instructor.
  • A " Threaded Reply " button to a user's (instructor or peer) post already made in the Discussion.

Group Discussions

Group Discussions allow instructors to create a single discussion topic, which is automatically duplicated to provide one separate version of the topic for each group within the Group Set. For instructors and TAs who want to review the discussions, they will go to the Discussions tool and click on the group discussion topic.

Once viewing the discussion topic, instructors will see a list of group discussions and will need to click on the specific group discussion they want to review. Students, however, will only see one discussion topic—the version of the discussion topic that is assigned to their group.

Instructor View of Group Discussion

When the instructor goes to the Discussions tool and then clicks on the group discussion topic, they will be taken to a master copy of the topic. They will see a list of links to the individual group topics at the top of the page. To view the submissions for a group discussion, they will need to first click on the group, and then they will see the posts created in that group topic.

Machine Problems (MPs)

There will be programming assignments (MPs) roughly every week that is worth 100 points each. There's no deadline extension for COVID related or other medical and non-medical related circumstance. Instead, the lowest MP score will be dropped.

MPs will be distributed on Thursday and typically due (by computer hand-in via Github) the following Thursday at 10.00 pm.

If you are working in a group, each group member must turn in his/her own copy of code in Github. We cannot grade your partner's copy as yours. Mention your group members by NetID near the top using comments:

Late submissions: You can turn in the assignments late until Saturday (48 hours after the deadline) and get a penalty of 2 points for each hour late.

James Scholar students who wish to earn honors credit in this course should complete additional MPs. See the Honors page in the menu pane.

The following assignments will use the EWS laboratory environment. The first two will require you to write LC-3 assembly language, while the remaining will require you to write C code. Some of the assignments may build from week to week.

MP Regrades

Grades for MPs will be released on Canvas and on Github, usually by the second Monday after they are due.

You can check the full breakdown of the autograder results and grade on Github at

If you believe there was a mistake in the autograder, an edge case that was missed, or an issue with submission/Canvas, submit a regrade request by submitting to the corresponding assignment on Gradescope.

Be specific about the issue, and explain why you believe you deserve partial credit.

The deadline to submit an MP regrade request will be one week after grades are released.

Example: MP 1 is due Sep 05. Regrades can be requested starting Sep 16, and will need to be submitted by Sep 23 deadline.
