UPDATE : This article was originally posted on August 7, 2018. It has been updated with new information and tips below.

With its Global Hub, Kellogg of Management at Northwestern University has reinforced itself as a haven for collaboratively-minded leaders. With its unique MBAi and MMM programs, the school also stands out for those focused on tech and design innovation, respectively. Furthermore, Kellogg is one of the few top business schools in the US to offer a 1-year MBA program.

However, getting a spot at Kellogg also requires serious smarts, as the school continues to add incredibly appealing majors and pathways, including options on Social Impact and Energy & Sustainability to name a few, getting into Kellogg is more challenging than ever.

That’s why we’ve prepared this guide to help you use your Kellogg admissions essays to stand out. We’ve rounded up our best tips and links to Kellogg MBA sample essays to ensure you give your Kellogg application your best shot.

1. Who is Kellogg looking for?

Kellogg

Source: @kelloggschool on Instagram

Each year, Kellogg selects around 500 students to take part in its two-year program. Though there is no one “perfect” type of Kellogg student, the university does favor high test scores (the mean GMAT for the Class of 2025 was 731 and the average GRE score was 163 Quant, 163 Verbal ).

Additionally, Kellogg is committed to admitting a diverse class, as the composition of the Class of 2025 reflects. 48% of the incoming class are female, 39% are international, 42% are U.S. students of color, and 9% identified as LGBTQ+.

However, at Kellogg, showing fit with the school goes far beyond having the right GMAT or GRE score. That’s why Kellogg also looks for a set of “soft” skills in its applicants.

In our experience, Kellogg also responds well to applicants with a demonstrated history of giving back.

So, if this sounds like a community in which you’d be right at home, you’ll have to think of the ways in which you align with the main characteristics of Kellogg’s students. This means forming your business school brand and then focusing on the aspects of that brand that align with changing the status quo, collaborative leadership, and giving back to society.

2. How should I answer the Kellogg essay questions?

2.1. essay 1 tips.

Intentionality is a key aspect of what makes our graduates successful Kellogg leaders. Help us understand your journey by articulating your motivations for pursuing an MBA, the specific goals you aim to achieve, and why you believe now is the right moment. Moreover, share why you feel Kellogg is best suited to serve as a catalyst for your career aspirations and what you will contribute to our community of lifelong learners during your time here.  (450 words)

This question is new this year and is a traditional goals essay, a common type of essay required of applicants at many elite business schools.

In this essay, you have a big task. In around 500 words , you need to discuss:

  • Context for your goals
  • Your specific-post MBA goals and why you are pursuing them at this moment
  • Why you believe an MBA is necessary to reach these goals
  • How a Kellogg MBA will help you reach these goals

Each of these elements must be included and must build off of each other.

First of all, many candidates think they do not need to specifically state their goals, or that it’s better to leave “their options open.” If you are applying to elite business schools, however, you must have and present absolute clarity about your goals.

TOP TIP : If you’re having trouble figuring out what your post-MBA goals are, we’ve prepared this post to help you decipher this essential part of the application process!

However, goals without context can be a little confusing to decipher or understand (or they can just seem a bit lackluster). For this reason, we suggest starting your essay with context.

For example, a client last year initially started his essay by saying:

“I want to become a Business Development Director at a Brazilian company.”

While interesting, it’s better to give a little bit of context to help these goals come to life. Check out the final version of the same essay’s introduction:

“In the 1970s, the phrase “think global, act local” came into use, suggesting that to have global impact, one must be active locally. With this mindset, I focused my career on Brazilian multinational companies to start creating global change at home. While at Company 1, I led a diverse global team, which showed me that clear communication is essential. I later accepted a finance position at a real estate company where I learned how new technologies can impact traditional local industries and that leaders must adapt to these trends to maintain competitiveness. Most recently, I joined Company 2 to participate in its daring globalization plan. At Company 2, I have learned how challenging it is to formulate effective global strategies to thrive in diverse markets. I have also developed management skills since becoming Financial Coordinator, learning how important establishing a culture of collaboration is to providing stability for organizations.

I now seek to take the next step to becoming a “global” leader by becoming Business Development Director at a Brazilian company pursuing globalization, giving me the experience to assume my long-term goal of CEO of one such company.”

Second, you should clearly demonstrate why you need an MBA.

An MBA is not a catch-all degree that serves a purpose for all career paths. As such, you need to demonstrate that the goals you have set for yourself require the additional training an MBA can provide.

Be thoughtful about this particular section. If you don’t need to improve in any meaningful way, you might be presenting the argument the admissions committee needs for why you can’t actually benefit from an MBA.

Furthermore, if you show fluffy or unsupported reasons you need to hone your skills, you’ll also likely see your application tossed aside in favor of an applicant who was able to clearly demonstrate how they plan to leverage their time at business school.

Third, add how Kellogg can specifically help you grow in the areas you’ve identified. Mentioning that you want to go to Kellogg because of its ranking will not cut it here.

Instead, show that you understand the unique offerings Kellogg’s curriculum provides (I highly suggest you mention the pathway or major you’re interested in) and have done significant, thoughtful research into how the opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom can help you grow. If you have space, it’s also highly recommended that you mention how you can contribute to the community.

End with a winning conclusion statement that reinforces your personal brand and ties the whole essay together.

2.2. Essay 2 Tips

Kellogg leaders are primed to tackle challenges everywhere, from the boardroom to their neighborhoods. Describe a specific professional experience where you had to make a difficult decision. Reflecting on this experience, identify the values that guided your decision-making process and how it impacted your leadership style. (450 words)

Though very similar to last year, this question is slightly different in wording this year.

Though you may be tempted to cram in as many examples of leadership as you can in this question, Kellogg clearly asks you for a single experience, though they do not dictate that you must draw this example from your professional experience.

As such, considering Kellogg’s focus on problem-solving, brainstorm a list of examples in which you faced a clear challenge and were able to overcome it using leadership.

That means you must focus on examples where your leadership skills were key in solving the problem you faced. As such, an example where your expert programming skills were what helped you face down the challenge won’t work well here.

Instead, think of examples rich in leadership skills like coaching others to deliver their parts of the project, active listening to ensure a solution was reached, or even resolving conflict. If you’re stumped, you can check out this list of leadership skills for inspiration.

You may also want to check out how Kellogg defines a Kellogg leader while brainstorming your stories.

kellogg optional essay

Additionally, when narrowing down your options to a final choice, make sure you choose an example where you had to make a difficult decision of some sort . If you can’t easily and clearly define the decision, what made it challenging, and how you overcame it using specific leadership skills, and the values that guided you along the way, keep brainstorming!

Finally, make sure your story has a clear outcome or resolution. This shows that your leadership skills are effective!

Start with a hook introduction that sets the stage and makes your reader want to keep reading to find out what happens.

Then, show the difficult decision you were facing. When writing this essay, do not skim over the conflict part of your story . Though we work hard to avoid conflict in real life, a bit of conflict in your story here demonstrates the efficacy of your leadership skills.  Finally, we truly feel you should stick to the STAR framework to ensure you deliver a winning answer.

Continue by showing what you did (this is the part in which you’re actively demonstrating your capacity to lead). During this section, focus on showing how you accomplished what you did and why you felt the actions you took were appropriate for the challenge. You also want to explicitly call out the values that guided your decision and specifically how they guided you. Just saying something like, “I was guided by empathy” won’t cut it here.

End your essay by showing the result you were able to achieve (we suggest you focus on examples with positive outcomes) and what you learned about leadership in the process.

Top Tip : It’s important to name values in the essay. You can mention them either throughout the essay or at the end.

If you have space, you may also include a conclusion sentence that relates to how you will apply this lesson at Kellogg.

2.3. 1Y Essay Tips (Applicants to 1 Year MBA Only)

Why is the Kellogg One-Year Program the right fit to help you reach your post-MBA career goals? And what unique academic, personal or professional experience do you bring into this specific program? (250 words)

For this question, we suggest a straightforward statement that includes why the 1-year format is better to help you reach your goals and how the specific elements of the program will support your growth.

Most importantly, make sure your goals are stated clearly. Goals like “use the MBA to advance in my career” will not cut it here, so make sure you include the details and motivations you need to ensure you demonstrate why you’re ready for a shorter format MBA. Since you’re already mentioning your goals in Essay 1, a brief recap is ok here.

Finally, you want to make sure to highlight one or two unique experiences that you have not mentioned elsewhere that you can contribute to the program. Anything works here, as long as it’s relevant and can be concretely tied to some aspect of the Kellogg 1 Year Program.

2.4. JD/MBA Essay Tips

Why is the JD-MBA Program the right fit to help you reach your post-MBA career goals? And what unique academic, personal or professional experience do you bring into this specific program? (250 words)

For this question, we suggest a straightforward statement that includes why this dual degree is the best option to help you reach your goals and how the specific elements of the program will support your growth.

Most importantly, make sure your goals are stated clearly. Goals like “use the MBA to advance in my career” or “I’ve always been interested in law” will not cut it here, so make sure you include the details and motivations you need to ensure you demonstrate why you’re ready for the rigors of this program. Since you’re already mentioning your goals in Essay 1, a brief recap is ok here.

Finally, you want to make sure to highlight one or two unique experiences that you have not mentioned elsewhere that you can contribute to the program. Anything works here, as long as it’s relevant and can be concretely tied to some aspect of the Kellogg JD/MBA Program.

Writing a 250-word essay can be challenging, but we’ve prepared an in-depth post to help you maximize every word.

2.5. MBAi Essay Tips

Why is the Kellogg McCormick MBAi Program the right fit to help you reach your post-MBA career goals? And what unique academic, personal or professional experience do you bring into this specific program? (450 words)

For this question, we suggest a straightforward statement that includes why a tech-focused progam is best to help you reach your goals and how the specific elements of the program will support your growth.

Most importantly, make sure your goals are stated clearly. Goals like “use the MBA to advance in my career” will not cut it here, so make sure you include the details and motivations you need to ensure you demonstrate why you’re ready for this specialized MBA. Since you’re already mentioning your goals in Essay 1, a brief recap is ok here.

Finally, you want to make sure to highlight one or two unique experiences that you did not mention elsewhere that you can contribute to the program. Anything works here, as long as it’s relevant and can be concretely tied to some aspect of the Kellogg MBAi Program.

2.6. MMM Essay Tips

Why is the MMM Program the right fit to help you reach your post-MBA career goals? And what unique academic, personal or professional experience do you bring into this specific program? (250 words)

For this question, we suggest a straightforward statement that includes why this unique dual degree option is the best way to reach your goals and how the specific elements of the program will support your growth.

Most importantly, make sure your goals are stated clearly. Goals like “use the MBA to advance in my career” will not cut it here, so make sure you include the details and motivations you need to ensure you demonstrate why you’re ready for this uniquely tailored MBA. Since you’re already mentioning your goals in Essay 1, a brief recap is ok here.

Finally, you want to make sure to highlight one or two unique experiences that you did not mention elsewhere that you can share with the program. Anything works here, as long as it’s relevant and can be concretely tied to some aspect of the Kellogg MMM Program.

2.7. Reapplicant Essay Tips

How have you grown or changed personally and professionally since you previously applied and what steps have you taken to become the strongest candidate you can be? (250 words)

Here, make sure you clearly demonstrate how you have improved since your previous application. We have written extensively on the topic of reapplying to business school here .

2.8. Optional Essay Tips

We know that life is full of extenuating circumstances. Whether you want to explain gaps in work experience, your choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance or something else, you can use this section to briefly tell us anything we need to know about your application. (280 words)

First of all, don’t be tempted by the “no word count” element of this question. This is not a place for you to retell your life story or sum up your interest in Kellogg or need for an MBA. Make sure you focus only on weak spots and also discuss what steps you have taken or took to rectify the weaknesses. This essay should be short, sweet, and included only if strictly necessary!

TOP TIP : Not sure if you need to write an optional essay? Check out our post on the topic here .

3. We Make Your Story Shine

One of the most common mistakes we see in MBA essays is that candidates fail to tell compelling stories . This is important because if your stories are not compelling, they will not be persuasive. At the same time, they must be backed by strong examples that establish a track record of success and prove to the admissions committees why you belong at their school.

Striking this balance between content and creativity can be tough, however, as succeeding means not only choosing the right stories but ensuring they are told in an optimal manner.

This is why our iterative developmental feedback process here at Ellin Lolis Consulting helps you mold your message through the application of our storytelling expertise until it reflects exactly what makes your profile stand out and show fit with your target program.

Not only can you take advantage of our iterative feedback process through multiple edits – you can also benefit from it after a single review! If your budget is tight, our editors will be happy to help polish your text as much as possible and leave “bonus comments” so you can keep working on it on your own!

Kellogg MBA Essay Analysis

Kellogg School of Management has opened its application for the 2024–2025 application cycle, updating its essay questions for 2024–2025 applicants. In doing so, Kellogg joined the list of top MBA programs that include a “goals” essay in their application. This is a change for Kellogg, which traditionally did not ask MBA applicants to directly discuss their goals or why Kellogg was a good fit in its essays.

In its second essay, Kellogg continues to ask applicants about leadership, but does so in a different way, tying in values. This change replaces Kellogg’s long-standing values essay.

Kellogg mba essay 1.

(450 words)

Though Kellogg’s first essay is what Personal MBA Coach often considers a “ goals/why MBA essay ,” this question also includes a contribution element. With a 450-word limit and several questions to answer, it will be important to be succinct as you tell Kellogg what you plan to do after business school, why NOW is a good time in your career path to pursue an MBA, and how Kellogg specifically will help.

Personal MBA Coach recommends that you begin by briefly setting the stage for Kellogg in terms of where you are in your career and why now is a good time for you to make a transition. This is not the time to cover your past accomplishments in detail (leave this for your resume and the short-answer questions ). However, it is important to illuminate for the reader where you currently are in your professional career and why NOW is a good time to pursue an MBA.

Next, share your career aspirations with Kellogg. Personal MBA Coach recommends discussing both your short-term and long-term goals here. Remember to select goals that are logical, ambitious, and achievable. (For more on how to think about MBA goals, check out this blog ).

In your next section, let Kellogg know how they factor into this path. To do so, think about the skills you need to gain to be successful in your career and how a Kellogg MBA will help you develop these skills. While it is important to research Kellogg’s unique offerings, do not simply include a laundry list of things you will do on campus. Instead, be thoughtful in selecting a few specific classes, clubs, or programs you are interested in and how these will help you succeed.

Finally, show the value that you will add on campus, considering your uniqueness. While this essay is NOT a classic personal story essay and there will be limited space to include your story here, you should consider your specific areas of expertise (either personally, professionally, or both) and how you might share them with your peers and the broader Kellogg community.

Kellogg MBA Essay 2

Kellogg leaders are primed to tackle challenges everywhere, from the boardroom to their neighborhoods. Describe a specific professional experience where you had to make a difficult decision. Reflecting on this experience, identify the values that guided your decision-making process and how it impacted your leadership style.  (450 words)

For the second year in a row, Kellogg has reworked its leadership essay. While the objective is similar to that of recent years—giving Kellogg an example of how you are an accomplished leader—this year’s essay has a bit more depth to it. After removing the separate essay question on values, applicants must now weave their values into the leadership story.

Also new this year, candidates are instructed to use a professional example in this essay.

Be sure to think of a decision for which you can clearly articulate the challenge faced. This story should also be easy enough to explain that you do not have to waste too many words setting up the situation.

A strong essay will discuss the actions you took and show which specific leadership skills and values you called upon as you made the decision. MBA admissions committees today are increasingly looking for candidates who are interested in not only driving their specific businesses but also in creating value for broader society. Similarly, DEI remains top of mind.

While neither of these topics is specifically covered in this essay, keep these themes in mind as you choose a story to tell. You want to show the type of leader you will be by detailing how you have led in uncomfortable or difficult situations in the past.

Whether you want to explain gaps in work experience, your choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance or something else, you can use this section to briefly tell us anything we need to know about your application. Personal MBA Coach always advises to tread carefully here, as less is more with optional essays.

Additional Kellogg MBA Application Essays

Kellogg requires candidates considering options other than the full-time MBA to answer these additional essay questions.

One-Year applicants:  Why is the Kellogg One-Year Program the right fit to help you reach your post-MBA career goals? And what unique academic, personal or professional experience do you bring into this specific program? (250 words)

MBAi applicants:  Why is the Kellogg McCormick MBAi Program the right fit to help you reach your post-MBA career goals? And what unique academic, personal or professional experience do you bring into this specific program? (450 words)

JD-MBA applicants: Why is the JD-MBA Program the right fit to help you reach your post-MBA career goals? And what unique academic, personal or professional experience do you bring into this specific program? (250 words)

MMM applicants:  Why is the MMM Program the right fit to help you reach your post-MBA career goals? And what unique academic, personal or professional experience do you bring into this specific program? (250 words)

This year, Kellogg asks applicants to the One-Year MBA program, MBAi, JD-MBA, or MMM program to answer an additional essay. For those unfamiliar with the MMM program, it is a dual degree program offering graduates both an MBA from Kellogg and an MS in Design Innovation from the Segal Design Institute at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science.

The question for all four programs is essentially the same, but applicants to the MBAi have a little more space to work with.

Since you will discuss your career goals in Essay 1, these essays give applicants a chance to expand on their interests in these specific programs and how the specific offerings of each program are best suited to help them achieve their career goals.

Be specific here, outlining what you will take advantage of on campus and how each opportunity will help you.

You should also consider how you will contribute specifically to the program of your choice by sharing what you uniquely bring to the table. Be sure not to repeat anything already discussed in Essay 1.

Reapplicants are also required to answer one additional question:

Since your previous application, what steps have you taken to strengthen your candidacy? (250 words)

Reapplicants should use the required additional essay to demonstrate growth. We advise candidates to review  our tips for reapplicants  before tackling this essay.

Finally, Kellogg has historically included video essay questions. Though not formally announced, we expect these will remain this year. See details below.

Kellogg MBA Essay Tips and Deadlines [2024 – 2025], Class Profile

kellogg optional essay

Kellogg values individuals; who you are as a person, what you’ve done, and how you will engage with the school’s greater community are all very important. Yes, academics and work experience are also key parts of your profile, but the school’s essay prompts seek to elicit more information about your personality, values, and goals so the admissions committee can determine your “fit” with its program. That is one of the reasons they also require video essays.

Kellogg has three excellent videos on preparing its application , and I urge you to watch all of them so you’ll understand better what the school is looking for. In addition, Kellogg provides detailed explanations of its different MBA programs so you can find the one that is right for you. Each MBA program requires that you write these essays, and in some cases, you must provide an additional essay related to the specific dual degree being pursued (e.g., MBA/JD, MMM, MBAi).

Kellogg application essay tips

Kellogg application deadlines, kellogg class profile, question 1: intentionality is a key aspect of what makes our graduates successful kellogg leaders. help us understand your journey by articulating your motivations for pursuing an mba, the specific goals you aim to achieve, and why you believe now is the right moment. moreover, share why you feel kellogg is best suited to serve as a catalyst for your career aspirations and what you will contribute to our community of lifelong learners during your time here. (450 words).

This essay seeks to elicit an honest answer from you as to why you want an MBA from Kellogg. It isn’t that different from the typical question “Why do you want an MBA?” but requires a more thoughtful and personal answer. I suspect that Kellogg has chosen this specific wording to weed out essays written by AI, which tend to be vague generalizations. Please don’t respond with canned responses like “I need to hone my business skills” or “an MBA from Kellogg will enable me to advance in my career.” That really says nothing! You can hone your business skills on YouTube; you can advance your career by having a mentor. Reflect on your real reasons for earning an MBA, and respond with specific examples. This could be an instance from your past when you realized you didn’t know how to manage your team well, or perhaps you’ve observed coworkers with MBAs and seen how they approach problem-solving strategically.

For this essay, you need to think back on times when a lightbulb came on, and you thought, “Wow, if I had studied XXX, I could do this job faster and more efficiently.” This is true whether or not you have a business background or degree. And you need to be specific about your goals. “I intend to be a project manager with Amazon, Google, or Microsoft” is a poor answer, as is “I want to do strategic consulting.” Many of these companies have recently been laying off people, so if you don’t know about current trends in your area of interest, shame on you! These are also banal answers, because every computer engineer who applies answers the same way.

Look at the job descriptions on your target company’s website. What positions is it hiring for, and what do applicants for that position have to know?  Having this information will show the committee that you have done your research and that you have feasible goals.

As for what you will contribute to the Kellogg community, find something in your background that sets you apart from other applicants. This doesn’t have to be a professional quality. If you say, for example, “I am a strong leader and good at managing my team,” how does that help you stand out from the pack? Don’t you think that other individuals applying to Kellogg also have this quality? Think about values you cherish, hobbies that might help bring a group together, ideas for a business to start discussions, or even research you’ve done on your own. And take a look at the class profile to see where your classmates have come from. Finally, if you are an international candidate, you can always discuss how things are done in your country, compared to how they are done in the United States.

Question 2: Kellogg leaders are primed to tackle challenges everywhere, from the boardroom to their neighborhoods.

Describe a specific professional experience where you had to make a difficult decision. Reflecting on this experience, identify the values that guided your decision-making process and how it impacted your leadership style. (450 words)

Again, this essay requires a specific example, not a hypothetical situation. They don’t expect you to discuss how you found a cure for cancer or peace in the Middle East. It can be something relatively small that still made an impact on the company, on you, or on someone else. For example, you realized that women were underrepresented in a specific department, so you brought that up with the department head and volunteered to help recruit more women and develop programming to keep them. The key here is to  refer back to the values you hold that propelled you to take this action.

Reapplicant Essay: Reapplicants will receive a prompt about their growth since their last application: How have you grown or changed personally and professionally since you previously applied and what steps have you taken to become the strongest candidate you can be? (250 words)

For this and any other reapplicant essay, you need to show what’s changed from your former application. It could be a new test score, it could be a promotion, or it might simply be a reevaluation of your goals and the realization that what you thought you wanted to do wasn’t really feasible. Keep your message short and to the point, and don’t reiterate anything you said in your previous application essays.

Video essays: Things to keep in mind as you prepare to complete this section:

  • Video essays are due 96 hours after the application deadline.
  • A video essay link will appear on your Application Status Page after you submit your application and payment.
  • You will need an internet-connected computer with a webcam and microphone.
  • The video should take about 20-25 minutes to complete, including setup time.

The video essay doesn’t need to be a Hollywood-perfect documentary! Don’t over-rehearse or read from a script. You won’t know the questions until you’ve submitted your application, but the questions are usually about something you know, and you will have time to prepare for them.

Practice speaking into a camera, and record yourself to be sure you are looking at the camera and not somewhere else. Also, speak slowly and clearly. If you rush, you’ll look nervous, and worse, your listeners might not be able to understand what you are saying.

Have a neutral background with lighting in front of you. And lock the doors so no one can interrupt you while you are recording. If you want to discuss something personal that defines you, you could consider, for example, filming yourself in the outdoors hiking, in your studio creating art, or playing a musical instrument.

Kellogg isn’t trying to trip you up with this video component; the admissions committee wants to find out who you are apart from your work, and they are looking for reasons to admit you, so breathe deeply, do a few practice runs before you begin (to be sure your equipment is working), and don’t forget to smile!

Northwestern Kellogg Application Essay Tips, 2024-2025

This is the year of the MBA application essay revamp, with many top programs changing their essay prompts. Kellogg has jumped in with both feet, as this year marks the most significant changes in Kellogg’s admissions essay questions in recent history. I was fortunate enough to spend some time recently with Steve Thompson, Kellogg’s Senior Director of MBA Admissions, during the annual meeting of AIGAC admissions consultants and top MBA program leaders, hosted by IESE in Barcelona, Spain. Steve mentioned that they would be making some changes, and indeed they have! A new Essay 1 question highlights intentionality and asks applicants to share their goals, and Essay 2 retains some elements of Kellogg’s prior Essay 1 about leadership and prior Essay 2 about values. Steve mentioned that Kellogg’s intention in changing the essays centered on giving applicants the opportunity to be more direct in sharing their goals, highlighting how Kellogg can help them, and explaining how they can add value to the Kellogg MBA community. Buckle up, folks, because that’s a lot to cover in the 450-word limit! Kellogg stays on brand with their second essay question in asking candidates to share a difficult decision they made and how their leadership style and values played into that decision. Let’s dig into these new questions and reflect on a strategy for answering them!

In the related article How to Get into Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management, you will find information on a variety of the MBA program’s offerings.

Kellogg Application Question 1 (450 words)

Intentionality is a key aspect of what makes our graduates successful Kellogg leaders. Help us understand your journey by articulating your motivations for pursuing an MBA, the specific goals you aim to achieve, and why you believe now is the right moment. Moreover, share why you feel Kellogg is best suited to serve as a catalyst for your career aspirations and what you will contribute to our community of lifelong learners during your time here.

In terms of sharing advice about how to tackle this question, intentionality is a good place to start, because you will have to be intentional in planning how you will address all aspects of this prompt in the 450-word limit. I count five questions embedded in this question, asking you to share (1) your motivation for pursuing an MBA, (2) the specific goals you aim to achieve, (3) why now is the right time, (4) how Kellogg is “suited… as a catalyst for your career aspirations,” and (5) what you can contribute to Kellogg. If you consider that you have only 450 words to address all these points, you have only about 90 words for each point. You might be able to address point 3 with fewer words, which would give you more room for point 4, which is a key aspect of the overall question.

The word intentionality is generally defined as the fact of being deliberate or purposive. Kellogg students and alumni know who they are and where they want to go, and they have taken purposeful steps to achieve their goals. Start with a brief story about what has inspired your goals, and then share your goals as well as why this is the right time for you to earn an MBA. Next, share how Kellogg can help you reach your goals. You won’t have room to share too many reasons about how Kellogg can help you, so be intentional in synthesizing how a few resources will uniquely help you, rather than listing lots of resources without connecting back to your personal story. Consider closing by sharing one way you can add value to the Kellogg community.

Kellogg Application Question 2 (450 words)

Kellogg leaders are primed to tackle challenges everywhere, from the boardroom to their neighborhoods. Describe a specific professional experience where you had to make a difficult decision. Reflecting on this experience, identify the values that guided your decision-making process and how it impacted your leadership style .

This question feels familiar in that it builds on Kellogg’s prior MBA application essays and gives applicants the opportunity to share something specific from their professional experience. Kellogg is still looking for “the kind of people who elevate the level of everyone in the room without making it all about them,” to loosely quote a former Kellogg admissions staffer who was describing the school’s ideal applicants.

Keep the Kellogg experience in mind as you respond to this Kellogg MBA essay question. Kellogg leaders have a “high-impact, high-empathy perspective,” use creativity and innovation to create opportunity, collaborate with a sense of empathy, value “intentionality with a strong sense of purpose,” and have a pay-it-forward alumni network.

Kellogg asks you to share “a specific professional experience” of a difficult decision you made. That means one example — not an amalgamation of multiple experiences. You don’t have room to tackle more than one example. There is some ambiguity in what “professional” experience means, given that the opening of the prompt notes that Kellogg leaders tackle challenges in their neighborhoods as well as the boardroom. It is likely safest to discuss a work-related example, but if you have considerable experience in a community-based organization and have demonstrated significant leadership in it, this could also be used as your example. A few things to keep in mind in selecting the example to highlight: Did you take a risk in advocating for a position that could improve your company’s/organization’s future? Did you collaborate with others to achieve the goal? If you write about a difficult decision you made that impacted only you, you’ve missed a chance to share how you build strong organizations. Big problems are not solved by just one person, so think about how you have motivated teams, brought varied perspectives into the decision-making process, and inspired others to achieve meaningful results.

You can think about breaking this question into a CAR (Challenge/Action/Result) model, in which the difficult decision is presented along with the actions you took. Reflect on how your values guided your decision-making process and how you gained insight into your leadership style from this experience.

Those applying to or listing a specialty program as their alternative choice will be prompted to complete an additional question. Re-applicants will receive a prompt about their growth since their last application: How have you grown or changed personally and professionally since you previously applied and what steps have you taken to become the strongest candidate you can be? (250 words)

How are you a stronger applicant than when you last applied? Have you retaken the GMAT or GRE? Completed new courses? Been promoted or faced new challenges at work? Use these 250 words to show growth, change, improvement, and excellence .

Kellogg Video essays

Kellogg values evaluating the whole applicant and provides each candidate the opportunity to answer a series of video essay questions. Kellogg offers tips on its site on how to answer these three questions here , including the following:

  • Video essays are due 96 hours after the application deadline.
  • A video essay link will appear on your Application Status Page after you submit your application and payment.
  • You will need an internet-connected computer with a webcam and microphone.
  • The video should take about 20-25 minutes to complete, which includes time for setup.
  • You will have 20 seconds to think about the question and up to one minute to give your response.

Introduction.

The Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University is consistently ranked high and is one of the top seven business schools (“M7”) in the United States. The essay portion of the Kellogg MBA application is unique because it comes in two parts: a written essay and a video essay portion.

The written essays are due along with the application while the video essays are due 96 hours after the application deadline. Once the application and fee have been uploaded, a link will appear on the application portal that will give the applicant access to the video portion.

Written Essays

The written essay portion is a great place to highlight the skills and experience that can’t be found on your resume or any other part of your MBA application. Your essays should present a compelling, concise, and clear story of your path to business school generally as well as Kellogg specifically. Kellogg requires two essays for all its applicants and a third for certain kinds of applicants (JD-MBA, reapplicants, etc). See the additional questions here .

2022-2023 Prompts

Kellogg’s purpose is to educate, equip and inspire leaders who create lasting value. Provide a recent example where you have demonstrated leadership and created value. What challenges did you face and what did you learn? (450 words)

Reading this prompt closely provides several insights. Firstly, Kellogg asks for an example, not examples. Choose one that makes the most compelling case. Secondly, in asking about challenges, Kellogg acknowledges that leadership comes with difficulties. Talk about the trials you faced throughout the story, don’t just throw them in at the end. Lead the adcom through the ups and downs of the example and make sure that the lessons learned tie into the overall narrative and aren’t tangential.

Values are what guide us in our life and work. What values are important to you and how have they influenced you? (450 words)

This question is purposefully left broad to allow you the space to craft a response that is genuine to your story. A good way to start brainstorming your response is to work backward. Make a list of the major decisions you’ve made in your life and identify why you made them. Then, see if there are any reasons that come up often. Going through the process like this will help you write your response to the second part of the question as well, as how the values have influenced you. You don’t have very many words so stick to one or two of the most important ones and choose examples that concretely show them.

Video Essays

The video essays are your chance to bring your candidacy to life in a way that is impossible to do on paper. Instead of seeing numbers and credentials, the admissions committee will see a person. The video essay is optional, however, it is definitely strongly preferred that you complete it.

Kellogg says that the video should take about 20-25 minutes to complete, including time for setup. You’ll need to have a stable internet connection as well as a computer with a webcam and microphone. For each question, you’ll have up to one minute to respond.

There are three video essay prompts, all designed to help you make your case for admission. They are as follows:

  • Please introduce yourself to the admissions committee. – What do you want your future classmates and the adcom to know about you? What makes you, you?
  • What path are you interested in pursuing, how will you get there, and why is this program right for you? – Answer honestly and meaningfully, why are you pursuing an MBA and why are you choosing the Kellogg full-time program?
  • One question will be based on a challenge you’ve faced and what you’ve learned from it.

Kellogg MBA Essay Tips

For each written essay, you are only given 450 words, and for the video you only have a minute for each prompt, both are not a lot. For this reason, make sure that every part of your answer is directly relevant to the question at hand. Here are several tips for acing your essays and making your application that much more competitive.

Use unique stories and anecdotes that aren’t found in other parts of your application.

Essays are a way for you to further expound on your candidacy and provide information that can’t be found elsewhere, whether that be on your resume, letters of recommendation, etc. Be intentional about where you choose to include certain information. If you have an important example that’s a bit lengthier, put it in your written essay. Have a funny or entertaining story? Talk about it in your video essay to add character.

Build Kellogg values into your answers.

After reading your essays and watching your video, the adcom should know exactly why you want to go to Kellogg specifically. You could go to any M7 and be successful and if you can get into one, you can get probably get into another. Even if Kellogg isn’t your top choice, showing that you understand what’s important to the institution will prove to the admissions committee that you care enough to have done some research.

You can do this by reading articles online–both on the school’s official site and third-party publications–taking tours of the campus, talking to alumni, contacting admissions for specific questions, and more. Get creative and work the values into your goals and plans.

Get specific.

When you talk about your strengths and the attributes you portray, make sure you’re providing concrete and specific examples. It’s easy to list off different things; it is much harder to prove how you’ve demonstrated them in the past. They should also be directly and obviously relevant to your overall narrative.

Remember: the admissions committee will not know any information that you don’t explicitly tell them. You have limited space to present a compelling reason that they should give you a seat in the class. Make that more likely by clearly demonstrating what you bring to the table.

Build a cohesive narrative.

At the end of the day, your entire application is basically one long story. Each part of the story should be related to the overall idea. Your candidacy is the culmination of the different parts of you that you’re choosing to present to the adcom.

As you write and film your essays, keep this in mind. Is the example you’re providing directly relevant to the narrative? If not, consider whether it should be there. There is a fine line between trying to portray as much of yourself as you can, in order to show your wide variety of strengths, and focusing on a set of core values. The right balance is usually somewhere in the middle.

Start early!

Start as early as you possibly can on your written essays. Usually, it takes a lot more time than you think it will to write multiple drafts, revise, receive feedback, and polish. For many people, it’s helpful to have a rough idea of your story before you start writing. Working with a coach can be really beneficial for this.

After writing your first draft, put it aside for a few days so that when you go back to it, you’re reading with a fresh perspective. Several drafts later after receiving feedback, read your essay out loud. Doing so will give you an idea of what it will sound like to an admissions committee member.

For the video essays, you should also start early. Practice your responses several times until you feel very comfortable giving them in a smooth manner. The last thing you want is to stumble over your words or be constantly “uhhh” and “umm”-ing your way through the answer. Talk to yourself in the mirror, practice recording yourself on Zoom, or role-play it with a friend.

How to Approach the New (!) Kellogg Essays

Great Kellogg essays will earn you a spot on this beautiful campus.

If you’re applying to Kellogg and have been patiently waiting for them to release their essay questions, the time has come! The prompts have been reworked this year, after a number of application cycles without changes. Without further ado, here are the prompts for this year’s Kellogg essays:

  • Kellogg Leaders are primed to tackle today’s pressing concerns everywhere, from the boardroom to their neighborhoods. Tell us about a time in your life where you’ve needed a combination of skills to solve a problem or overcome a challenge. Which skills did you use? What did you accomplish? (450 words)
  • At Kellogg, our values are based on research that concludes organizations comprised of leaders with varied backgrounds and perspectives outperform homogeneous ones. How do you believe your personal and professional experiences to date will help to enrich the Kellogg community? (450 words)

Note: There is also a third required essay for those applying to a specialized MBA program and/or for those who are reapplying. Finally, Kellogg has three video essay questions that will need to be submitted within 96 hours of the application deadline (a link will be sent to you after you submit your application).

Advice for Approaching the Kellogg Essays

While the Kellogg essays may have changed, the qualities they look for haven’t. Let’s start by defining exactly what those qualities are. Kellogg shares that they value individuals who:

  • Approach business problems with a mix of hard and soft skills.
  • Seek to adapt to the evolving business world with open curiosity and innovation.
  • Believe in strong, empathetic collaboration as a way to strengthen work, perspectives and outcomes.
  • Embrace the power of diversity in your teams and networks.

A strong thread throughout each of these criteria is that Kellogg highly prioritizes soft skills – in short, they want leaders who bring people together to innovate and solve challenges. Before you even consider how you will approach the Kellogg essays, give thought to how you embody this statement and brainstorm examples that prove this is true.

Think Long and Hard About the Story You Select for Essay One

As the first essay prompt indicates, Kellogg is looking for you to share one concrete ‘story’ in your answer. So, essentially, you have one shot to demonstrate why, as proven by a past experience, you are a strong leader that can overcome challenges and have impact on the organizations of which you are a part. That’s a lot of pressure to put on one story, so it’s important to choose wisely.

Our recommended approach is to brainstorm a variety of stories you could potentially use here and not simply go with the first one that comes to mind. Just because an accomplishment was personally significant to you doesn’t mean it is the best material for this essay.

Most applicants will likely share a professional example, but an extracurricular situation could work equally as well. Whichever you choose, we recommend that it is relatively recent (within the last two years) and involves teamwork of some kind. Kellogg wants to see the kind of leader you are today and given the heavily team-oriented nature of the program, telling a story about a time you accomplished something without the help of others doesn’t demonstrate the fit they are looking for.

Once you’ve brainstormed a list of stories, consider which skills (beyond teamwork, which is non-negotiable) each one highlights. Compare this list of skills with the personal branding you’ve developed earlier in the application process – which story feels most cohesive with the picture you are trying to present of yourself?  Which story highlights the broadest list of MBA-applicable skills, notably those that are important to Kellogg which places a lot of value on soft skills? In fact, we think a successful essay could speak to primarily (if not all) soft skills given Kellogg’s culture and also because hard skills can be showcased through your test score, GPA, and resume. Ask yourself these questions as you narrow down your list to that perfect example.

Revisit Your Personal Branding (Again!) for Essay Two

You may find your head spinning upon reading the second essay prompt, wondering how you’ll possibly narrow down the list of ‘things’ you might share. Note that we’re using the term ‘things’ here because, while the essay prompt references ‘experiences’, we’d suggest that you can also think beyond discrete situations or characteristics and consider including more conceptual influences or themes that make you who you are. For instance, perhaps you’ve lived in seven countries in your lifetime – that combination of ‘experiences’ and their influence on you could be a topic of discussion.

To start, we recommend that you revisit your personal branding work. What formative experiences or influences did you identify as being the driving force behind what you’ve done to date and what you hope to do in the future? Consider these the top contenders for inclusion in this essay because, beyond painting a picture of who you are, they should connect with why Kellogg – and an MBA in general – is right for you (in other words, they tell Kellogg who you are AND, critically, why they should care).

Of note, make sure you don’t lean entirely professional in this essay. Even if you feel like your differentiated work experience is your key ‘selling’ point, it is important to weave in some personal background as well. Kellogg (and business schools in general) want you to bring your whole self to campus, so being comfortable opening up in the application demonstrates you are ready to contribute in this way if admitted.

Once you’ve chosen and described the ‘things’ that make you unique, it is critical to share discrete ways in which you will utilize your perspective, skill set, etc. to improve the experience of others in the Kellogg community. Avoid a laundry list here and, instead, demonstrate you’ve put real thought into how you will contribute on campus with a few specific and impactful examples.

Structure Ideas for the Kellogg Essays

For Essay 1, we recommend a structure somewhat like this:

  • P1: Share the context of the situation you will discuss and the problem or challenge at hand
  • P2: Describe the actions you took, emphasizing elements of teamwork, collaboration, and innovative problem solving
  • P3: Wrap up the story, covering the ‘results’ and the impact you had on your team or organization
  • P4: Summarize the skills you demonstrated as well as any learnings you gained and talk about how you envision applying them at Kellogg and beyond

For Essay 2, we recommend a structure somewhat like this:

  • P1: Introduce the first ‘thing’ that makes you unique, including how it has influenced or changed the way you see the world
  • P2: Describe how you will use this perspective to enrich the Kellogg community
  • P3: Introduce a second ‘thing’ that makes you unique and how it has influenced or shaped you
  • P4: Share another concrete, actionable way you will apply this uniqueness at Kellogg

Kellogg Video Essay Tips

Kellogg requires you to record and submit responses to three questions, which you will not know in advance. The only clues they give are that the questions are designed to ‘help you showcase your personality and share some of the experiences that brought you here today’.

Not knowing the questions can feel intimidating, but we recommend you prepare an introduction of yourself that highlights your personality (hobbies, interests, etc. are fair game!) and also brainstorm a list of the best stories you imagine using for behavioral interview questions.

Procedurally speaking, once the clock starts ticking, you will have 20 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to answer each question. Focus the bulk of your practice on getting the timing right – a minute is shorter than you think! So, practice (out loud!) using the  STAR format  to tell each of your stories within this timeframe so you ensure you don’t get cut off before you can share the awesome ‘result’ you drove.

Generative AI can be a powerful aid in crafting an essay, but it should be used as a supplementary tool rather than a replacement for your own effort and creativity. If you choose to use generative AI in your essays, do so with integrity to ensure you provide genuine insights and reflections. You should also cite the use of generative AI by referencing the tool at the conclusion of your essay (Name of Tool, URL).

Be honest here, and make sure you cite the tool you may have used. If you do choose to use AI for this set of essays, be sure to fact check any information gathered. In total, these essays should reflect your own ideas and personal details.

Kellogg MBA Essay Tips

Essay one: intentionality is a key aspect of what makes our graduates successful kellogg leaders. help us understand your journey by articulating your motivations for pursuing an mba, the specific goals you aim to achieve, and why you believe now is the right moment. moreover, share why you feel kellogg is best suited to serve as a catalyst for your career aspirations and what you will contribute to our community of lifelong learners during your time here. (450 words).

This career goals essay focuses on why you are pursuing an MBA, why now, and your professional aspirations. Note that Kellogg uses the term “intentionality,” which demonstrates that you are in charge of your own career and your goal orientation. Professionals with clear and realistic goals are most successful, and Kellogg is seeking successful graduates and leaders.

Therefore, the narrative of this essay should provide insight into your decision to pursue an MBA. As you review your career so far, note the moments of intentionality. When did you make a conscious choice to pursue one opportunity over another? Did you have a master plan, or did you follow your interests and strengths?

Either way, demonstrate that you moved from one inflection point to another purposefully. As you consider your MBA, what is motivating that choice? Think about your post-MBA career goals and what you will learn in the MBA program as inputs to this decision.

This essay question is important because it asks why now is the right time for your MBA. For many candidates, the MBA might be the next box to check on their career ladder. For others, there are other possible routes to take. Therefore, spend time describing why this is the right moment on your journey.

Finally, demonstrate you’ve done research to determine that Kellogg is the right place to pursue your MBA. What classes, professors, or internships will accelerate your goals? Think about the areas where you need to develop for your post-MBA leadership journey. Ideally, you connect with the Kellogg community as part of your research and visit campus or attend information sessions in person.

Essay Two: Kellogg leaders are primed to tackle challenges everywhere, from the boardroom to their neighborhoods. Describe a specific professional experience where you had to make a difficult decision. Reflecting on this experience, identify the values that guided your decision-making process and how it impacted your leadership style. (450 words)

This essay focuses on leadership using a behavioral essay framework (the clue is “tell us about a time…”). Details about exactly what you did, said and learned to provide details about your skills.

As you structure the essay, spend some time setting up the background of the story. Then use most of the space to describe what you did, thought, and felt and how you behaved. Also, use details to entice the reader and set yourself apart. A few well-placed specifics will add color without adding length to these Kellogg MBA essays. Make sure you are outlining the skills that you used in this example.

If you choose a challenging situation that you overcame, be sure to include lessons learned. In addition, describe the various skills used. Also, showing you are open to feedback so you can improve will be an asset.

As you consider the skills you highlight in your example, don’t neglect teamwork, a core value at Kellogg. Your leadership experience is likely part of a team at work or in an extracurricular activity. Also, collaboration demonstrates maturity and social skills. Finally, make sure you explain what you accomplished in this example. Ideally, it is impactful to the organization and those around you.

Career Goals Short Answer Questions: Please tell us about your career goals. You’ll also have the opportunity to expand on this in other parts of the evaluation process.

Short-answer question #1: Share with us the motivations behind your desired industry/function after graduating from Kellogg. (500 characters)

First, consider intentionality when describing your motivations to pursue your industry and function. Second, what past experiences and research have taught you about this career path. Third, be specific and brief in your response.

Short-answer question #2: What does a successful career look like five years after you graduate from Kellogg? (500 characters)

Each person defines success differently. After some time in your industry and function, what does a successful career look like? It may be promotion to the next level, having an impact on your organization, or accomplishing a specific career milestone. Again, intentionality will lead you to your longer-term goal and help you define success for yourself.

The Video Essay

The kellogg admissions team advises the following in regards to the video essay: we’ve read your essays, we’ve read your resume — now we want you to bring all that to life in a video. show us the person behind all those carefully crafted words. the video will be comprised of three questions, each designed to help you showcase your personality and share some of the experiences that brought you here today., here are some things to keep in mind as you prepare to complete this section:.

  • Video essays are due 96 hours after the application deadline.
  • A video essay link will appear on your application status page after you submit your application and payment.
  • You will need an internet-connected computer with a webcam and microphone
  • The video should take about 20-25 minutes to complete, which includes time for setup.

Watching a video essay gives the admissions committee a truer sense of who you are. Therefore, the Kellogg admissions committee advises: “Be yourself. We don’t want scripted answers — we want to get to know you and learn something new. Please do not try to reuse an example from an essay that might, in some roundabout way, answer the video essay question asked. We already read that essay, so why tell us that story again?”

Kellogg’s video essays should reveal your personality. Preparation will help you be comfortable and be yourself when you are recording the video. That said, it’s essential not to sound like you are “acting.”

Also, it would be useful to do a few rounds of practice in front of the camera to get comfortable. Draft a friend or family member to ask you some common interview questions and record your answers. Think of a few personal stories about your background that may be good examples for the video questions you are presented with.

Provide tangible evidence that you have improved your candidacy in this answer. Some visible improvements could be a higher GMAT score. Also, grades from any new quantitative classes you took.

In addition, you could describe a promotion at work or new volunteer activities. Another area could be increased responsibility at work or in your extracurriculars. Or, discuss how your career goals have changed. Finally, you could focus on how you have refined your personal goals.

Kellogg Application tips: Written and video essays

Editor’s note: This article was published during a previous year’s admissions cycle. For the latest information on essay prompts for the 2023–2024 application, please see this post .

By Brittany Wisniewski, senior associate director of admissions    As you move through the application process , one of the most important aspects is telling your personal and professional story as fully and authentically as possible. Each part of the application provides an opportunity for you to share what makes you unique. When you are submitting your written essays and optional video essays, consider examples that demonstrate who you are, what drives you and what you plan to achieve as a future Kellogg Leader .

Written essays

The application will give you two prompts for written essays:

  • Kellogg’s purpose is to educate, equip and inspire leaders who create lasting value. Provide a recent example where you have demonstrated leadership and created value. What challenges did you face and what did you learn?
  • Values are what guide us in our life and work. What values are important to you and how have they influenced you?

Today’s changing business landscape demands leaders who possess a blend of analytical, creative and social intelligence and who can uplift teams to their full potential — those are the candidates we at Kellogg are looking for. Know that there are no perfect answers to our essay questions. Instead, when you are writing your essays, think about how you can leave your mark on Kellogg and the world.

Optional video essays

New this year, you can complete video essays after you submit your application and payment. While the video is an optional component, this is a great opportunity to tell us more about you  and explain why Kellogg is the right place for you.

The video portion of the applications will include three questions, each designed to help you showcase your personality and share some of the experiences that brought you to where you are today:

  • Introduce yourself to the admissions committee.
  • What path are you interested in pursuing, how will you get there, and why is this program right for you?
  • This question will be based on a challenge you've faced and what you've learned from it.

Please note, video essays are due 96 hours after the application deadline.

At Kellogg, we believe in a holistic approach to the application process. We look at all areas of a candidate’s application. For us, this is much more than a test score, essay or job title. All applicants have unique strengths and attributes. Please make sure we see and hear everything that makes you special.

If you are ready to become a Kellogg Leader, complete your application today .

To explore more application tips or learn more about Kellogg, visit our admissions site  or sign up for an event to speak to an admissions officer.

how important are the Kellogg optional video essays? If you perform well, to what extent does it help your admissions? Conversely, If you perform poorly, to what extent will it hurt?

Haha hope they don’t matter that much since felt like mine were pretty mid. since they’re optional feel like they must be a lot lower relative to the other parts of the application.

Badge Image

They're optional?

Haha wtf. Glad i did them

When I applied, there were optional essay questions. I did not end up filling them out. I suspect they will be used in the event of a borderline candidate but have no clue if that’s true. There’s no downside if you have the time and good content, but you need to be weary of an oversaturated, admissions officer.

Badge Image

All you will hear are opinions on this as there isn't an official answer, even if they say there is. Just put yourself in Adcom's shoes. You see and hear a potential applicant in a video trying to sell themselves to your program. How would you be influenced if you were Adcom? So I think it can either hurt or help, to what level will depend on your overall packet. So do the best you can on it.

MBA Application Video Essays: Managing Yourself Through Disruption

Lance Bennett, director of diversity admissions, gives advice on the video essays in Kellogg's Full-Time MBA application, including video essay #3.

By Lance Bennett, Director of Diversity Admissions

Hello, my name is Lance Bennett and I’m the director of diversity admissions at Kellogg and work with our full portfolio of programs. I’ve worked at Kellogg for almost seven years and am gratified in working to make an impact in the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion space. I join my colleagues in being very excited about your application!

Kellogg is dedicated to building a community of students who are creative, who seek out diverse teams to lead, and who meet challenges with innovation. Never has it been more important to be a Kellogg leader. And it is with this in mind that I want to talk to you about our video essay questions this year.

What you need to know about our video essay questions

Our video essays have long been a way for us to get to know you beyond what we see on paper in your application. They are the last thing we view after having read all about your background, accomplishments and dreams, and they are a great way for us to get to know you further as a person.

The first two video essay questions will remain the same. The first is asking you to introduce yourself while the second will ask you to share the path you intend to pursue and how Kellogg can help you get there. Both of these questions help us to tie together everything else we’ve seen in your application. We aren’t looking for overly rehearsed answers. Rather, we’re looking to meet you and get to know you in a more authentic way.

A deeper dive into video essay question #3

In past years, the third question was a randomized question that would ask more broadly about a challenge that you’ve faced. But this year, everyone will answer the same question:  2020 has been a year of seismic disruption—fighting the global COVID-19 pandemic, tragic deaths that have brought systemic racism and social justice issues to the forefront of long overdue conversations, and economic and political divides that are growing deeper and deeper. How has this unprecedented year challenged you and how have you faced that challenge?

We thought it was critical for us to first acknowledge and then understand how the challenges of this moment have affected you and how you’re leading yourself through these challenges. This moment is challenging for us all, but it is a moment that is challenging us in different ways. Personally, COVID-19 has challenged me to do my work very differently, especially when engaging with and growing the Kellogg community. And as a Black person, I am angry, frustrated and sometimes exhausted at so much of what’s happening in the world. But when that feels overwhelming, I look at what I can do personally to ground myself and affect change. Being a director of admissions at a graduate business program is one way, because I firmly believe that education can be integral in addressing the issues of inequality we see and face on a daily basis. Leading conversations and formal sessions on DEI are also ways to advance the work. Really leaning on those things that are most important…faith and family (with an occasional round of golf!). And finally, continuing to educate myself on all difference helps me manage this moment.

I’m sharing my personal story to stress that no one person has experienced this year in the same way. So, I urge you to speak about how you’ve been specifically challenged and how you’re managing yourself through it. At Kellogg, so much of leadership is actually about how you lead yourself . And your answer will help us get a better understanding of who that leader is.

So be yourself and speak from your authentic voice. And keep in mind that this is one of our favorite parts of reviewing applications — because we’re getting to know you . I look forward to reviewing your video essays soon.
