Import your LinkedIn, get a resume. Then use our AI tools to make it better.

If you’ve already got a polished LinkedIn profile, why go through the same writing process again with your resume? After all, a good LinkedIn profile and a good resume have a lot in common. You can use that!

Simply import your LinkedIn profile to Kickresume and turn it into a sleek professional CV.

You can then use our AI toolkit to rewrite your resume , check it for errors with our resume checker , and even make it look super professional with our stunning resume templates . That is, if you feel like making your resume a bit more ‘extra’ and job-winning.

What are the benefits? Why import your LinkedIn profile instead of building a resume from scratch?

The following only apply if you’ve already got a good LinkedIn profile. But that shouldn’t be a problem — every ambitious job seeker should already have one!

In any case, here are some obvious and less obvious benefits of using our super easy LinkedIn-to-resume converter.

  • Save time. You don’t have to write a resume from scratch. You can use the content from your LinkedIn profile.
  • Done in a single press of a button. It’s quick and easy. Simply enter your profile’s url and press “Import”.
  • It doesn’t end with importing the profile. You can (but don’t have to) use a wide array of our tools to give your resume an edge over others — you can scan it for improvements, get AI feedback, quickly generate a tailored cover letter, rewrite it with AI, and more.
  • Tailor your resume to every job application. Any LinkedIn profile has one drawback — it’s one size fits all. A resume can be tailored to each job you apply to, which we would strongly advise you to do if you really want to land that job.

All in all, converting your LinkedIn profile into a resume gives you a good way out if you don’t want to waste time writing your resume from scratch. It’s quick, easy, and highly recommended!

How to download your resume from LinkedIn then? Is it just a single click and that’s it?

Yes! And no. But mostly yes! The thing is, there’s both a technical side and a content side to it.

While the technical side is pretty straightforward and quick, the content side of converting your LinkedIn profile to a resume can be a bit tricky. But that, of course, all depends on your profile.

How to download your resume from LinkedIn then?

  • Go to the top of our LinkedIn profile to resume converter web page (you can also simply scroll up, it’s this very web page)
  • Enter your LinkedIn profile’s address, and press the “Convert to Resume” button.
  • Review your newly imported LinkedIn resume, pick an ATS-friendly template, use our AI Writer to rewrite it, analyze it with our resume checker — Kickresume gives you plenty of tools to make your LinkedIn resume stand out.

However, you probably wouldn’t want to stop there. Your LinkedIn profile — and, by extension, your newly imported resume — probably isn’t yet tailored to a specific job opening. Leaving it as such would be a missed opportunity.

This is how to create a resume from your LinkedIn profile:

  • Select your profile’s public url (e.g. https://www.linkedin.com/in/your_name/) and press Ctrl+C (on Windows), or Command+C (on MacOS).
  • Now go to Kickresume’s LinkedIn import website: Convert Your LinkedIn Profile to a Resume .

How can I improve the resume I exported from LinkedIn?

Don’t forget to make at least some changes to your newly imported LinkedIn resume.

For instance, your resume can usually benefit from minor formatting changes , as some of the original LinkedIn formatting can get lost during the importing process.

You should also remove any LinkedIn-specific phrases from your new resume. You might not want phrase like “Let’s connect” or “Open to opportunities” appear on your resume.

Add resume-specific sections , such as hobbies or skills, and finally, tailor your new resume to each specific job opening you’re applying for.

Customize your resume’s visuals. You can choose from 40+ templates, explore more than one million design combinations, and make your resume more you.

Finally, you can even let AI rewrite your entire resume  using our AI Resume Rewriter . It’s easy to use and it will rewrite your resume in a language that sounds more professional.

I’ve created a resume from my LinkedIn profile. Can I download it for free?

Yes, you can. While it’s true that not all resume templates and customization options are free (we need to make money somehow), there are still several high-quality resume templates available.

At the end of the day, yes, you can download a full-fledged professional resume for free . Just make sure to avoid any features that are clearly marked with the “Premium” badge inside the app.

On the other hand, if you decide that you like the premium templates better — and would like to land your dream job faster with the help of Kickresume — you can always upgrade to Premium . We offer well-priced plans for every type of customer.

Can I customize the appearance of my new LinkedIn resume?

Yes! You can choose from more than 40 professionally-designed resume templates  and customize each template to your liking.

You can change nearly every part of your new resume. Each template comes with its own set of alternative color schemes and typefaces that were chosen by our expert typographers to complement the overall design.

What’s more, you can also create a cover letter with a design that matches your resume. We always create new templates in resume / cover letter pairs.

Ultimately, there are more than one million possible design combinations for you to explore. The sheer number of customization options gives you the ability to create a resume that stands out from the rest. All within reason, though — no matter how you customize your resume, our designers made sure it will always look good.

I’m having problems converting my LinkedIn to a resume. What should I do?

If you’re having problems converting your LinkedIn profile to a resume, there are two things you can do:

  • Make sure your LinkedIn is filled with enough content.  Remember that an empty profile makes for an equally empty resume. Fill your LinkedIn profile with at least 200 words. For best results, you should have at least the About, Experience, and Education sections of your profile filled with content. The more the merrier.
  • Make sure your profile is not set to private.  Our tool needs to have the ability to access your LinkedIn profile. If your profile is set to private, only your connections can view it. Set your profile to public and try importing your LinkedIn profile again.
  • Make sure that your profile is more than 30 days old.  Sometimes it takes a few days for Kickresume to access your profile. While this usually takes less than the aforementioned 30 days, this time period gives us a bit of an overhead when diagnosing problems related to LinkedIn import.

If you’ve done all of the above and you’re still unable to turn your LinkedIn profile into a resume, please contact our customer support (click the speech bubble icon in the bottom-right corner). Our customer support team is always more than happy to help.

How to Download Your Resume from LinkedIn (3 Easy Ways with Steps)

Sarah Colley

3 Key Takeaways

  • LinkedIn offers two in-app ways to download your profile as a PDF resume.
  • One of the most common issues when downloading a resume directly from LinkedIn is formatting.
  • Teal’s AI Resume Builder features an easy way to import your LinkedIn profile page to create and optimize your resume.

Some companies include an option to import your LinkedIn profile for your job application. Aside from being sub-optimal for job seekers looking to position themselves as the ideal candidate for the job, this resume import feature along with the "easy apply" option (for jobs posted on LinkedIn) is not standard for job applications.

The majority of online applications still ask for a PDF upload of your resume, because it’s the format they're most familiar parsing within their ATS (Applicant Tracking System).

That's because in-house recruiters often use a tool to scan resumes for specific keywords that align with the job listing. Which means:

  • You need to customize your resume to line up with each job posting.
  • You need to have a PDF resume file .

To use your existing resume, and not have to go through the hassle of creating one from scratch, you can use one of three methods to download your resume from LinkedIn:

How to Download Your Resume from LinkedIn

To clarify, LinkedIn isn’t a resume.

Sure, it has your work history and the option to attach a resume, but it will not suffice for most applications without major edits. You can’t simply copy-paste your LinkedIn profile page URL and move on.

That said, there are a few easy ways to upload pre-existing work experience data from LinkedIn to save you time and energy.

Method 1 (easiest): Teal's LinkedIn to Resume feature

Downloading your LinkedIn profile from LinkedIn itself is easy too. More on that method later.

But what makes Teal the “easy method” is it requires only one click, and you get additional features you’ll need before sending out that resume—particularly, customization, ATS compatibility, and keyword matching.

Here’s a step-by-step guide for converting your LinkedIn profile to a resume with Teal:

  • Sign up for a free account with Teal.
  • On the first page, you’ll see a three-step process for getting started, including "Save a Job", "Import your Resume", and "Apply for Jobs."
  • Select "Import your Resume" and a pop-up window appears.
  • Navigate to your LinkedIn profile and select "View Profile" in the top right corner and grab the URL. Copy and paste the URL into the input bar on the pop-up in Teal. Hit “Import your LinkedIn profile."

how to download resume from linkedin

That’s it! It’s essentially just grabbing your LinkedIn profile URL and putting it in the right field. Once uploaded, Teal organizes the data into sections you can shift around, select and deselect, edit, and so on.

Teal resume template

It doesn’t just create an ATS-friendly resume straight from LinkedIn by checking it against keywords you should use for a particular job title. Nor does Teal simply make a resume that looks professional.

Teal's Matching Mode feature checks the job listing you’re applying for, and makes it simple and easy to customize your resume to match that posting.

If you already have a Teal profile and need to reimport your LinkedIn profile, you can:

  • Click on the “Resume Builder” tab on the left sidebar.

Teal resume builder

  • Hit the “Menu” tab next to the “New Resume” button.
  • Tap “Import Resume or LinkedIn” from the drop down menu.

  • Append or overwrite your information.

How is Teal better than creating your own resume from scratch?

If you’ve ever created a resume from scratch —and if you’re here it’s likely because you’re avoiding doing that very thing—you know how long it takes.

You don’t know what keywords to use, unless you carefully comb the listing yourself. You have to painstakingly adjust your resume, research best formatting, and adjust for every single job listing.

And, don’t forget, you may not know if recruiters are even reading your resume correctly because you may not understand whether or not your resume is ATS compatible (tip: no images!).

Method 2 (fastest): Linkedin to PDF format

There are actually two processes for downloading your resume as a PDF file from LinkedIn. Both are simple and quick. The first is just two easy steps:

  • Click on your LinkedIn profile, and select “More” in your profile header.
  • Click “Save PDF”

dropdown menu linkedin

This method is perhaps the easiest, and LinkedIn even adds a nice side bar of color for a little flair.

LinkedIn to pdf

While it is nice to have a resume automatically created with formatting and a summary, it doesn’t exactly read like a resume.

The summary is too long, and being that it’s a PDF, it’s not easy to edit without doing a conversion first. And conversions of PDFs don’t always retain their formatting. You might end up doing more work in the long run than you would simply making a resume from scratch, or uploading it to Teal.

Method 3 (longest): LinkedIn to Resume Builder to PDF format

The second option LinkedIn offers is five steps.

  • Log in to LinkedIn and click the “Jobs” tab (suit case icon on mobile).
  • Select “Resume Builder" from the sidebar.

linkedin resume builder

  • A pop-up will appear. Click “Create from profile."
  • The page will refresh and you’ll see another pop-up asking you to type in or select your desired position. Enter and click “Apply."

job description keywords

  • Hit "Download resume as PDF" to save it to your computer.

how to download resume from linkedin as pdf

You should see the PDF file in the downloads folder of your computer. If you go back to the resume builder tab, you’ll also see recent resumes there, in case you need to easily download it again.

While this is designed to be as easy as possible, there are some downfalls to directly downloading or saving your resume from LinkedIn.

Common issues when downloading your resume from LinkedIn (and how to avoid them)

The biggest downfall of downloading your resume directly from LinkedIn is the formatting.

How you input your information into LinkedIn matters as it will appear the exact same way on your resume file.

Note: If you want to optimize your LinkedIn profile to appear in more job searches by hiring managers for a particular job, Teal's Chrome extension includes a free LinkedIn Profile Reviewer. Learn more: LinkedIn Profile Review with a Chrome Extension ).

In fact, if you don’t create your LinkedIn profile exactly like you would a resume, you’re guaranteed to need changes to your PDF file for it to appear professional and be parsed correctly by the ATS.

Beyond that, there is the fact you’re downloading a PDF version of your resume. So, if you do want to make some changes, you’re going to have to convert it into a word processing file format first, or purchase the premium version of Adobe Acrobat.

Companies will not reach out and ask for another resume. They will simply exclude you from the candidate pool.

Here’s what a downloaded LinkedIn resume looks like using the five simple steps above:

linkedin resume

There are other downfalls, too.

If you don’t have a premium LinkedIn subscription (which starts at $29.99/ month for a LinkedIn Premium Career membership), you can’t choose which sections appear in your downloaded resume.

linkedin section

Lastly, LinkedIn has only made downloading your resume possible if it’s in English. This makes it a very limited tool for a good chunk of LinkedIn users.

How to customize your LinkedIn-downloaded resume for every application (and why)

If you’re looking at the example above, or you’ve already downloaded your resume from LinkedIn, you’ve probably noticed the formatting isn’t great.

That’s just one reason to customize your resume, but there’s a much larger and more important reason:

You need to tailor your resume to every job. It’s time consuming. It’s painstaking. It feels like a full-time job by itself. But customizing your resume to fit the job listing is the best way to improve your job search.

Because hiring managers are filtering resumes by specific keywords and qualifications in their application trackers to look for required skills and past experiences.

Now you’re thinking, “but if I just write down everything I did within that job, it should automatically work, right?"

Maybe. But you don’t want to bank on maybe. They may be looking for your skillset but looking for synonyms of the skills you listed. You want to increase your chances of outshining the competition for that role. One way to do that is to ensure you’re the best match.

How do you customize your resume for each job at scale?

There are several things you need to do to tailor your resume for each opportunity:

  • Scan the job descriptions for any keywords, phrases, or tasks that particularly jump out. Naturally incorporate these throughout your resume.
  • Research your potential employers for any language they commonly use, targets they want to hit, industries or customers they speak to that you may have experience working with, etc.
  • Adjust the language to be more action based, personalized, and of course, inclusive of keywords used in the job description.

It sounds like a lot, and it really can be if you don’t have the right tools in place.

Teal's Matching Mode feature speeds up the process by identifying the keywords to include for each job, then helping you naturally weave them into your resume.

When using Teal’s AI Resume Builder, each bullet point and section of your resume become moveable objects. You can select or deselect, and organize each sentence to your liking, to create your resume.

What makes this a time saver is that you can ask its AI to instantly write and rewrite several sentences or bullet points to summarize work you’ve done throughout your career, and simply select the ones you need to match the job listing.

For instance, you might be applying for a Content Director position at a company that requires some experience in content production and social media. The next application might also be for a Content Director position, but they may be looking for more reporting experience.

You could have experience in all of the above, and create bullet points within both your LinkedIn profile and the Resume Builder. The latter allows you to shift those points around, and exclude or include only what’s relevant to recruiters.

How to Edit Your LinkedIn Resume

You might also want to apply for a job that doesn't need certain information or skills on your profile. Luckily, LinkedIn lets you remove, edit, or update sections before downloading your resume.

You can change the file name at the top of the page if you want to create different versions for different job applications.

Simply select the edit icon and enter a preferred name for your resume in the Resume name field. Then click Save .

Click the edit icon to edit your resume name

To update or remove any section of your resume, click on the edit icon next to that section.

From the edit menu that pops up, click the Delete option at the lower-left corner to remove the selected section completely.

Note that any changes you make to your generated resume won't affect your profile in any way. This feature lets you edit your resume anytime without worrying about your profile.

You might also want to delete a resume from your profile since LinkedIn saves any resume you generate---and you can therefore end up with a lengthy list.

To delete previously generated resumes, go back to your LinkedIn profile. Then click on More .

Next, select Build a resume . Once you see the resume you want to delete from the list, click the three horizontal dots to its right. Then click Delete to remove it.

How to Save Your LinkedIn Profile as a PDF

  • Go to your LinkedIn profile and click on More .
  • From the options, select Save to PDF to download your profile to your PC without the edit option.

How to Use Your LinkedIn Profile as a Resume

make resume from linkedin profile

Employers in every industry use  LinkedIn  to find job candidates, and it's the top site for professional career networking. It's important to make sure your LinkedIn profile highlights your skills and experience. This way, interested employers and networking connections can see, at a glance, what makes you unique.

What is a LinkedIn Profile?

Your LinkedIn profile is the landing page that your connections, recruiters, and others see when they view your information on LinkedIn. Your profile includes details on your job qualifications, employment history, education, skills, experience, volunteering, articles you have posted, and content you have commented on or liked.

It's important to create a robust profile that reflects your work experience and qualifications, and to update it regularly.

Think of your LinkedIn profile as an  online resume . Like your resume, it should demonstrate your abilities, work experience, and education. However, a LinkedIn profile can do even more than a traditional resume. It can include a photo of you , links to your work, references from colleagues and employers, and more.

Know how to create a LinkedIn profile that acts like a resume, only better. With a strong profile, you increase your chances of impressing an employer.

The Importance of Your LinkedIn Profile

One of the most important parts of LinkedIn is your profile. Your profile is what you use to connect with people in your network. It is also how you get found on LinkedIn by potential employers.

When you apply for a job, the employer might also check out your LinkedIn profile to learn more about you. A ResumeGo study reports that resumes that include a link to a comprehensive LinkedIn profile have a 71% higher chance of getting an interview than a resume without a link or a resume with a link to a barebones profile .

In addition, your LinkedIn profile can increase your visibility online and help you build your  professional brand . Your LinkedIn profile may show up in Google's search results. This means that anyone looking for information about you will find everything they need to know at a glance – skills, employment information, recommendations, etc.

For all these reasons, it is important to make sure that your LinkedIn profile is complete and detailed. In fact, you can consider your LinkedIn profile as your online resume. It should have the same information that is on your resume and, if you're looking for a new job, you will want prospective employers to be able to review your credentials for employment, including your qualifications, experience, and skills.

Download Your Profile as a PDF File

It's easy to save your profile as a PDF file to use as a resume. Once you've saved it, you can print out a copy to review.

  • Click the ... More  icon in the top section of your profile, to the right of the photo and to the left of the  Edit
  • Select  Save to PDF  from the drop-down menu, and your profile will be saved to your computer. You can open it, then print.

Convert Your Resume to a Word Document or Google Doc

The PDF version of your resume can be converted to a Google Doc or a Microsoft Word Document for editing.

Keep in mind that you'll most likely need to edit the formatting to turn it into a traditional resume. There are several options for converting it, including using  Adobe PDF to Word Converter , uploading the PDF file and then  opening it as a Google Doc , or  editing it in Microsoft Word .

There are also sites and apps that you can use to convert your profile into a professional resume for a fee.

How to Use Your LinkedIn Profile as a Job Search Tool

What's the best way to create a LinkedIn profile that will catch the eye of hiring managers and professional networkers? LinkedIn offers users a number of ways to build an impressive profile. Here are some tips on how to make your profile into a strong online resume that will  help you job search on LinkedIn :

  • Get detailed . When creating your profile, include all of the information that you list on your resume, and more. One benefit of a LinkedIn profile is that it can be longer than your resume. If you left any information out of your resume (such as a previous job), you can put it in your profile. However, don’t get carried away. If your profile is several pages long, no one is going to read it.
  • Add a professional photo . Unlike a resume, which often does not include a photo, LinkedIn users expect you to include a photo. Include a  professional headshot . You can also change the background image to make it appropriate to your interests. Don't include a photo that's too casual. LinkedIn is all about professional networking, not socializing with your friends and family.
  • Include a catchy and concise headline.  Even if you don’t have a  resume headline , include a headline on your LinkedIn profile. You want to make it concise and catchy. For example, instead of “Teacher with 10 Years of Experience,” try “High-Tech, Award-Winning Physics Teacher.” If you don’t currently have a job, here are tips on  how to write a headline when you are unemployed .
  • Write an engaging summary . The summary section on LinkedIn is a great place to highlight, in a few sentences or bullet points, what makes you stand out as an employee or job candidate. This should read like a summary statement on a resume .
  • Use appropriate language.  A resume is usually quite formal. You can be a bit more casual on your LinkedIn. For example, many people write their profiles in the first person (“I have ten years of experience in healthcare marketing”). It’s okay to be a bit more casual or personal in your LinkedIn profile – in fact, it can help engage a recruiter.
  • Include keywords and skills. Unlike a resume, you are not tailoring your LinkedIn profile to fit a specific job listing. However, you can still use  keywords  from your industry in your profile. This will make it easier for employers to find your profile when searching for potential job candidates.
  • Include values.  Like a resume,  include numbers  to demonstrate how you have added value at work. For example, you might state how much money you saved a company through your cost-saving solutions, or explain how you completed a task within a certain period of time.
  • Add content and accomplishments . You can upload documents or include links on your LinkedIn profile. Take advantage of this – include papers, presentations, projects, personal websites, and other materials that demonstrate the quality of your work. This is a great way to show, rather than tell, employers about your strengths.
  • Get recommendations and endorsements. To a potential employer, a  LinkedIn recommendation  is a reference in advance. Try to boost your profile with LinkedIn recommendations from your connections. Also be sure to  endorse people in your network , and hopefully they will endorse you back.
  • Create a custom URL and share your profile.  You want people to see your profile, so be sure to make it as visible as possible. Make sure your profile is public (check your LinkedIn settings to make sure you are visible to people outside of your network). Also consider  customizing your URL  so that you have a link that's easy to share. Mine, for example, is  https://www.linkedin.com/in/alisondoyle . You can include this URL in your email signature so that people can easily access your profile.
  • Grow Your network. Another way to share your profile is to connect with other members and build your network. The more connections you have, the more opportunities you have. Of course, you should only connect with people you know. If you don’t know someone but would like to connect, be sure to send a private message introducing yourself.
  • Update your profile regularly . Don't forget to update your profile when you change positions or companies. Also add links to new articles, projects, etc., as you complete them. Your profile should be dynamic and up-to-date. Spend a little time every month, even if you don't have major changes reviewing it and freshening it up .

LinkedIn Resume Builder: Does It Pass the Test?

  • Noel Rojo ,
  • Updated March 13, 2024 6 min read

Did you know you could generate a resume from your LinkedIn profile — within LinkedIn’s website?

Yeah, not many people know about this option. It’s such a hidden tool, you’d think LinkedIn’s resume builder was intentionally hidden in shame.

And perhaps that’s the case, as there are a few downsides to using it.

We've tested it and will show you everything you need to know about the LinkedIn resume builder, its strengths and weaknesses, and alternatives.

What is a LinkedIn resume builder?

Step-by-step guide to linkedin resume builder, 5 ways a linkedin profile differs from a resume, better alternatives to linkedin resume builder, what to adjust when creating a resume from your linkedin profile.

The LinkedIn resume builder is a free web-tool that allows you to either import an existing resume or generate a new resume from your LinkedIn profile.

It populates a simple resume template which can be easily edited without impacting your profile. You're also able to download the finished resume as a PDF.

So, how can you create a resume there exactly? Let's have a look!

Before you can begin using the LinkedIn resume builder, you first need to create and log in into your LinkedIn account. Once you have done that, you can continue with the following steps:

  • Click the Me icon at the upper corner of your LinkedIn profile page.
  • Select the More button beneath your name and contact information.
  • Upload or create resume from profile.

That’s it, simple right?

I've tried it myself too and here’s what it spat out:

Resume from LinkedIn resume builder

So, what do we think? Is this a resume that will get you hired?

Not quite. There are two main problems that one can spot immediately:

  • Template. With your resume, you want to stand out. However, the LinkedIn resume template is pretty boring. Plus it contains a lot of white space , forcing you to write sparingly if you don't want to go over one page.
  • Content. LinkedIn profiles and resumes have different functions. You'll not be getting a great resume by merely clicking the " Create from profile " button.

If you want better results, you're going to have to tweak your LinkedIn resume — heavily.

Believe me, you really don't want to just copy and paste your LinkedIn profile into a resume and call it a go. We'll go over why in the chapters below.

LinkedIn resume too bland?

Pick a template with personality and get hired.

Although the LinkedIn’s resume builder is a simple and easy to use tool, it comes with many limitations.

For starters, a good LinkedIn profile rarely translates into a good resume. Perhaps because both are meant to perform different roles.

Here are 5 ways in which a LinkedIn profile differs from a resume:

  • Less formal: Although still professional, your LinkedIn profile should be casual.
  • Includes a profile picture : Including a resume photo in most western countries is a no-no. However, uploading a professional portrait picture on your LinkedIn profile is advised.
  • Longer and more descriptive : For sake of brevity a resume’s length is kept between one and two pages long. Such limitations are not the norm on a LinkedIn profile.
  • Not tailored to individual jobs : Usually it's recommended to tailor a resume to every job application. On the other hand, this is not something you do with your LinkedIn profile. That one you just keep relevant to your field.
  • Written in 1st person instead of 3rd : Unlike a resume, you can use “I” and other personal pronouns such as "me, my, we, our,"  etc.

As you can see, these differences are not so small and will definitely complicate things when converting your LinkedIn profile into a LinkedIn resume.

Luckily, there's a better way.

Some resumes can distinguish an applicant at a glance.

They ooze personality, not just because of how they're written, but because of how they're formatted and how they look.

Unfortunately, this is something that is pretty much impossible to pull off with the LinkedIn resume builder.  You just don't have the options.

In fact, I believe you would be better off creating a resume via Microsoft Word or Google Docs where you at least have some liberty to personalize it.

But we know how hard and time consuming these programs can be.

This is where dedicated resume builders like Kickresume come in. You can still import your LinkedIn profile into them to get a head start, except you now have the option to choose between 30+ resume templates and millions of possible combinations.

Just follow these steps:

  • Login/Signup to Kickresume.com
  • Select Create New and Import from LinkedIn
  • Follow onscreen instructions
  • Pick a template and adjust your content

In the end, you don't need to worry about the formatting or whether it looks good or not.

You can instead dedicate your time to writing a great resume and to properly  use LinkedIn to get a job .

Christy's word of advice

While I’m a huge fan of LinkedIn, unfortunately I can’t say the same about its underwhelming resume builder. If you’re in a hurry and just need a PDF copy of your work history, go ahead and use it. But if you want a document that you can extensively format and quickly edit, or that looks attractive, avoid it. Or use a platform that enables you to pull data from your LinkedIn profile and edit it in a separate resume builder (hint, hint — Kickresume 😉 ).

Christy Morgan, Resident HR Expert

If you decide to create your resume via LinkedIn or with importing your LinkedIn data into a dedicated resume builder, here's how to edit it:

  • Keep it short: Even though your LinkedIn profile allows you to have a whole career history, on your resume, you typically focus on specific aspects and you’re limited by a number of pages. Try to keep it short and relevant, don't go over 2 pages.
  • Change the tone: A resume is a formal document and your tone should reflect that. Eliminate colloquial phrasings and avoid using first person pronouns — heck, you can even opt to remove all personal pronouns.
  • Edit your summary: Majority of LinkedIn summaries are far too long for a resume. Keep your profile 2-5 bullet points long, 3 being the sweet spot.
  • Reduce the skills section: Unlike a LinkedIn profile, a resume doesn't need the 30 skills you added for SEO purposes. Jot down only the most relevant ones. 3-6 should be more then enough.
  • Change your keyword optimization: While a LinkedIn profile uses keywords that speak the language of a career field, a resume should speak with the language of the prospect job or company.

Key takeaway

In conclusion, although the LinkedIn’s resume builder can be great way to jump-start the resume writing process, it's really not an ideal way to create an attention grabbing resume.

It lacks options, it's clunky and the template is bland.

Honestly, if you're to spend time on LinkedIn, you're better off spending it perfecting your profile. You'll get noticed on LinkedIn better that way.

LinkedIn’s Resume Builder Makes a Resume From Your Profile

We've all used LinkedIn as an online resume , but a new feature creates a traditional paper resume for you by compiling information from your profile.

LinkedIn Labs, like Google Labs , is the experimental section of LinkedIn where they test out new features. The Resume Builder takes your LinkedIn Profile and creates an instant resume. You can share the URL of your resume with potential employers or print it out.

You could use a free template for your resume or Google Docs , but then you have to fill in all the details yourself. Resume Builder has one major drawback: it doesn't export to an editable format. For now, you can only save it as a PDF. Of course, you can always upload that PDF to Google Docs and edit it from there. Hit the link at the bottom to try it out.

27 Great Resume Summary Examples to Get Hired

20 min read · Updated on June 03, 2024

Marsha Hebert

Your resume summary is the first impression you make on potential employers, so it's crucial to get it right

When it comes to job applications, your resume is often the first point of contact with prospective employers. It's essential to make a good impression right from the start and that's where your resume summary comes in. Your summary is a brief statement at the top of your resume that highlights your skills , experiences , and achievements , making it a key part of your job application.

In this article, you'll learn how to write the ultimate resume summary that will grab the attention of recruiters and hiring managers. You'll discover what makes a good summary and what to avoid, as well as how to sell yourself effectively to potential employers.

You may be wondering: what exactly is a resume summary and how do I write one? We'll answer these questions and provide examples of professional summaries for various industries.

By the end of this article, you'll have a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to create a standout resume summary that will help you to land your dream job.

What is a resume summary?

To understand a resume summary, it's important to understand the challenge that good summaries are designed to overcome. Employers who are looking for new hires often need to compare many dozens or even hundreds of resumes to find the best candidates for the job. Few hiring personnel have the time needed to thoroughly examine every single resume that they receive.

Instead, employers typically spend no more than five or six seconds scanning any given resume. If a resume manages to capture their interest in those few seconds, they'll take the time to read it in greater detail.

However, if your resume doesn't grab their attention, it's likely to be rejected without any further examination. So, the challenge is to find a way to quickly earn the reader's interest and inspire them to read the rest of the document.

That's where your resume summary comes into play. As you'll see from our resume summary examples, a good summary is the resume equivalent of a salesperson's elevator pitch.

This brief statement should highlight your experience and job title, one or two key skills, and a couple of your most prominent achievements. When your summary is crafted well, it will provide the employer with a quick overview of your potential value as a new hire.

Once you've written your summary, you should place it right after your contact information and resume headline , so that it's the first thing employers see. If you've done your job properly, that summary will be compelling enough to make the reader want to learn more about the type of value you can bring to the job.

How should you start a resume summary?

After your headline, you should include a brief opening statement that summarizes who you are. This statement should be concise and compelling, and it should clearly communicate your unique value proposition. Here are some examples of strong opening statements:

Innovative Marketing Manager with over five years of experience in developing and executing successful campaigns for Fortune 500 companies

Results-driven Sales Executive with a proven track record of exceeding revenue targets and building strong client relationships

Skilled Customer Service Representative with expertise in problem-solving, conflict resolution, and communication

Tips for writing a resume summary

To make sure you get your summary spot on, follow our top tips:

Be specific

When writing a resume summary, it's essential to be specific and quantify your achievements wherever possible. Instead of saying, "Experienced marketing professional," try saying, "Experienced marketing professional with expertise in managing successful social media campaigns, resulting in increases of up to 30% in website traffic."

This provides concrete evidence of your skills and demonstrates your value to potential employers.

Reflect on your career

When it comes to writing a strong resume summary, you should engage in some self-reflection. Before putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard), take some time to think about your key skills, experiences, and achievements. This will help you to identify the most important information to include in your summary. Review your past roles, responsibilities, and accomplishments, and think about how they relate to the job you're applying for. Ask yourself:

What have I achieved in my career?

What skills have I developed?

What makes me stand out from other applicants?

Identify your key skills

One of the most important things to include in your resume summary is your key skills. These are the abilities that set you apart from other candidates and demonstrate your value to potential employers. Begin by making a list of your top skills, then prioritize them based on relevance to the job you're applying for.

Highlight your relevant experiences

Next, think about relevant experiences that you can include in your summary. This includes any previous jobs or internships, volunteer work, or extracurricular activities that have given you valuable experience. Consider what you've learned and achieved in each role and how that relates to the job you're applying for.

You should focus on what is most relevant to your target job. Here are some examples:

Proven ability to increase sales revenue by 20% year on year

Expertise in project management and team leadership

Proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft 365

Confident working with a diverse range of clients and stakeholders

Keep it concise

Remember, your resume summary should be concise and to the point. Stick to the most important information and avoid filler words or irrelevant details. A good rule of thumb is to keep your summary to 3-5 sentences.

Use action verbs

When describing your experiences and achievements, use strong action verbs and adverbs to convey a sense of accomplishment and momentum. For example, instead of saying, "Responsible for managing social media accounts," say, "Successfully manages social media accounts."

Quantify your achievements

Wherever possible, use numbers and statistics to quantify your achievements. This provides concrete evidence of your skills and demonstrates your value to potential employers. For example, instead of saying, "Helped to increase sales," say, "Helped to increase sales by 20% in the first year."

Tailor it to the job

Make sure your resume summary is tailored to the job you're applying for. This means highlighting the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the role. Look at the job description and identify the key requirements, and then make sure your summary addresses these points.

How to Apply for a Job Online: 10 Tips to Stand Out and Land an Interview

Getty Images

Applying for jobs online has become the norm. Generally, it's a win-win situation for both sides involved: Job seekers have a broad range of opportunities and the convenience of applying for multiple jobs from home, while employers can leverage automated systems to select the best candidates. However, the online application process can be daunting.

With numerous platforms to register, different requirements and application processes, and applicant tracking systems (ATSs) to dribble, many candidates experience a feeling described as job-hunting fatigue .

The bad news is that there's no way around it—online job applications have come to stay. The good news is that with a little strategy and organization, you can successfully navigate this process and stand out from the crowd of applicants.

In this article, we will teach you how to apply for a job online with 10 tips that not only will help you land an interview but also hopefully make your job hunting journey less stressful.

How to apply for a job online: before, during, and after

From the start, applying for a job online requires four basic elements: a digitized version of your resume and cover letter , a professional email address, a good internet connection, and a handful of patience. Below we lay out essential tips for each step of the application process.

1. Write an ATS-friendly resume

Most companies use applicant tracking systems to filter candidates from online applications. This type of software quickly sorts and scans resumes to find the best “match” to a predetermined role. That's why writing an ATS-friendly resume is the first step in applying for jobs online—if your resume is not a match, it might not get selected. But how do you do it?

Simply put, your resume should be tailored to the specific role you're applying for and have keywords from the job description. Keywords in job descriptions include skills, experience, certifications, and education. For instance, “time management,” “HTML, C, and Java,” and “B.S in Computer Science” are often key requirements and terms used in software development job postings. (Here's how to read a job description the right way .)

Unless the employer asks for a creative resume, always use a simple and minimalist resume template with one column, standard fonts, and font sizes (for example, Arial 11), and no graph elements to make it easier to be scanned.

2. Have two versions of your resume

If you have a diverse professional background and are applying for different types of positions, you should have two versions of your resume, properly formatted for each role. This makes the online application process faster and easier, as you won't have to redo the whole thing at every new submission, only minor adjustments.

3. Keep your LinkedIn profile updated

Hiring managers often search for candidates on LinkedIn. Thus, your profile should always be updated with all the relevant experience, certifications, education, and skills for the job you intend to land. If you have a portfolio (and it's requested in your field) add the link to the “site” section.

Like your resume, your LinkedIn profile should also include some relevant keywords to make it easily found. For instance, if you're a data analyst experienced with sales, and that's exactly what you'd like to do in your next role, you could add “Data analyst | Sales chain expert” to your title.

Don't forget to update your picture and your header, if needed. The more clean and professional, the better. Remember that your profile is going to be the first impression the recruiter will have of you—and you want to make sure that is a good impression.

4. Have a basic cover letter draft ready

Some companies ask for cover letters, others don't. To save time, always have a basic cover letter drafted and update it to match the jobs you're applying for. As with resumes, if you're applying for two (or more) different roles, consider having two cover letter versions ready to go. (Take a look at these four cover letter examples in case you need some help.)

5. Use search engines to find open jobs

Most, if not all, companies post open positions on search engine websites—which include traditional job listing platforms and LinkedIn. You can leverage this by searching for specific keywords related to the job you want and selecting companies to submit an application.

On The Muse , you can filter more than 10,000 open positions by experience level, job category, company industry, location, and benefits. Similarly, LinkedIn allows you to filter job openings by date, company, level of experience, and work system (remote or on-site).

When you find the ideal opportunity and decide to apply, two things can happen: 1) You'll be redirected to the company's website to fill out your application there. 2) You'll be able to fill up your application on that same page. On LinkedIn, for example, companies can opt for a simplified application, in which you upload your resume on LinkedIn, answer a couple of questions, and send it.

6. Create accounts on job listing websites

Speaking of job listing websites, creating an account for the ones most popular or commonly used by companies can significantly speed up your application process. Keep in mind that sooner or later you'll have to do it, so you might anticipate the task.

Usually, those websites have a profile page—similar to LinkedIn—that you have to fill up with the following information:

  • Certifications
  • Awards and recognitions

Some will allow you to register with LinkedIn and autofill the information, which facilitates the process. (Remember to check if the data exportation was successful and every box is filled correctly). However, others don't have this option and you’ll have to do it manually. To avoid spelling and grammar mistakes or missing information, consider taking a day when you have free time to focus instead of rushing to finish your registration.

7. Use the career section of companies sites

Company websites are also places to find and apply for jobs online. If there is any specific company that you'd really like to work for, check their website and search for a “Careers” page. If you find one, it's likely that you have two options: 1) Submitting your resume to their tablet database or 2) Apply for a specific job if there are any openings.

In both cases, you'll either have to fill up your work history, education, and personal information manually or use the autofill through LinkedIn or your resume file. Keep in mind that every company site is different, so these options may not always be available in all the sites you visit.

In case you have to manually add your information, a trick that can speed up the process is copying and pasting from your resume. Just remember to make the necessary changes and adapt to each specific job position.

8. Be prepared to do employment tests

Online applications in job listing sites often come with employment tests, also known as talent assessment tests, that you have to complete as part of your candidacy. Not doing the tests, when they're mandatory, will automatically disqualify you.

Usually, these tests assess your personality and skills. Some will also evaluate emotional intelligence, cognition, and work style—it really depends on your industry, field, and role. Needless to say, scoring high on employment tests is crucial to be considered by the hiring manager—so you want to take them seriously and complete them calmly.

Although this seems a daunting task to do, there's a plus side: some companies use the same or similar tests, which allows you to repurpose one that's already saved on the platform or know exactly what kind of answers you'll have to respond.

9. Have an application email script drafted

Some companies, especially small ones, don't have built-in software to handle online job applications and would rather have candidates send their resumes via email. For this reason, consider having an email script drafted to send along with your resume and cover letter, if requested.

Your message should be professional, and straight to the point. A brief salutation, a sentence expressing your interest in the role, one to two sentences about your resume (and cover letter), a closing sentence, and your signature is enough. For instance, you could say something along the lines of:

Dear [Name],

My name is [Your Name] and I'm excited to apply for the Software Developer position listed on LinkedIn.

As requested, I've attached my resume and cover letter . Please let me know if I can provide any extra information.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

[Your Name]

10. Track your applications and follow up

While it’s not mandatory, ideally you should track and follow up with your applications. Generally, one to two weeks is considered a reasonable time to reach out to check the status of your application.

Keeping track of your applications also prevents you from applying for the same company multiple times (don’t even bother—it won't get you the job) and also helps you remember which job a recruiter is referring to when they reach out to you. (Here's how to follow up on a job application .)

Your tracking system can be as simple as a notebook with detailed notes, or as formatted as a spreadsheet tracking the job opportunity, hiring manager’s contact info, dates you sent the resume and followed up, and any response you’ve received so far.

Extra advice on online applications

Applying for a job online is as formal as handing your resume in person. Thus, you should take every detail of this process seriously, including the following:

  • Email address : Use a professional email address, both to register on job listing sites and to send emails to recruiters. Avoid playful or overly informal usernames and opt for a version with your name and last name.
  • Resume file format : Generally, it's best to submit your resume as .doc or .docx, however, some employers may ask for a PDF file. You can have both versions saved, for convenience, or convert the file format when necessary.
  • Your resume file name : Always save your resume file with your name and last name. For instance, annajonesresume.doc. This makes it easier to locate, both for you and the hiring manager. Avoid generic names such as “resume” or random numbers.
  • Follow the employer's directions : If the job posting requires specific information or documents (for instance, a portfolio or a cover letter), give what is requested. If they don't, then don't. Following the recruiter's instructions is crucial to successfully applying for jobs online—everything they want from you is going to be written in the posting.

Bottom line

Online job applications can be confusing at first, but they tend to be simpler than most people expect. You need a tailored and ATS-friendly resume, a cover letter draft in case the employer asks for one, and a dose of patience to fill up your personal information, education, and work history on job listing sites.

Paying close attention to the job description is crucial to know exactly what the employer is looking for and what steps should be taken to successfully submit your application. If you feel like you need extra help, even after reading our tips, consider working with a career coach .

Summer often brings a slower pace, providing a much-needed opportunity to recharge, and that’s important. Although it won’t be long before summer is in the rearview mirror, there’s still time to focus a little time (while you are in chill mode) on career development so you can set the stage for a successful September. Here are nine activities you can undertake now to advance your career and ensure you’re ready to make your mark when the leaves start to fall.

1. Evaluate And Set Career Goals

Reflect on your career progress and goals . Review your achievements and identify areas for improvement. Refine your goals or create new ones, making sure they are clear and achievable. Once you have identified your goals, document them, and read them every day to keep them top of mind.

2. Update Your LinkedIn Profile And Resume

Your resume and LinkedIn profile are your professional calling cards. Ensure they are up-to-date with your latest accomplishments, skills, and experiences. Tailor your resume to reflect the roles you aspire to and optimize your LinkedIn profile with relevant keywords to increase visibility to the people who are making decisions about you.

3. Expand Your Skills

There’s still time to enroll in online courses to acquire new skills or enhance existing ones. Platforms like Coursera , Udemy , Maven , and LinkedIn Learning offer a wide range of courses that can boost your qualifications and make you more competitive in the job market. Focus on skills that are in high demand in your industry or that will help you advance to the next level in your career. Think about the new competencies you can gain that will help you stand out from your peers.

4. Bolster Relationships

Networking is crucial for career growth. Use the next few weeks to expand your professional network by attending webinars, and virtual meetups. Connect with colleagues, mentors, and influencers in your field, and rekindle relationships with connections that have faded a bit. Building strong professional relationships can lead to new opportunities, collaborations, and valuable insights.

6. Work On Your Portfolio

If your career involves creative or project-based work, use the summer to work on personal projects or update your portfolio. Showcase your best work and demonstrate your skills and creativity. A strong portfolio can make a significant difference in job applications and client pitches.

7. Seek Feedback And Professional Development

Request feedback from colleagues, managers, and mentors on your performance and areas for improvement. Constructive feedback can provide valuable insights and help you grow professionally. Also, consider seeking a mentor or executive coach to guide you and provide support as you work towards your career goals.

8. Plan For Work-Life Integration

A successful career is not just about hard work; it's also about staying resilient and energized. Identify routines and habits that promote well-being and productivity. Prioritize self-care, exercise, and time with family and friends. A balanced life will help you stay engaged and clear during the final quarter of the year.

9. Volunteer And Give Back

Volunteering can be a rewarding way to develop new skills, expand your network, and give back to the community. Look for opportunities that align with your interests and career goals. Volunteering can also enhance your resume and demonstrate your commitment to social responsibility and causes you care about. Supporting those around you is a powerful way to show your boss that you’re a leader .

Take these proactive steps in the remaining weeks of summer to enhance your career prospects and focus on a fulfilling fall. Whether you're looking to advance in your current role, explore new opportunities, or simply grow as a professional, these final weeks of summer provide a valuable opportunity to invest in your future.

8 million student-loan borrowers on Biden's new repayment plan don't have to make payments after a federal court blocked the program in full

  • The 8th Circuit blocked the SAVE student-loan repayment plan in full.
  • Student-loan borrowers on SAVE won't have to make payments as the legal process continues.
  • This will probably spark confusion for borrowers who already received bills with lower payments.

Insider Today

Another student-loan payment pause is here for millions of borrowers.

On Thursday, the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals blocked the SAVE student-loan repayment plan in full , meaning key provisions of the plan, such as lower monthly payments and a shorter timeline to debt cancellation, cannot be implemented.

It's the latest in the legal roller coaster for borrowers — earlier this year, two separate groups of GOP state attorneys general filed lawsuits to block SAVE , and at the end of June, two federal courts blocked parts of the plan . The 10th Circuit allowed parts of the plan to move forward just days later, but the 8th Circuit's ruling once again halted the plan in its entirety.

The education secretary, Miguel Cardona, said in a statement Thursday night that all borrowers enrolled in SAVE "will be placed in an interest-free forbearance while our Administration continues to vigorously defend the SAVE Plan in court."

"The Department will be providing regular updates to borrowers affected by these rulings in the coming days," Cardona said.

The Education Department confirmed on Friday that this forbearance period wouldn't count toward borrowers' forgiveness progress on Public Service Loan Forgiveness or income-driven repayment plans.

The department also said: "Borrowers enrolled in the SAVE Plan who have received a bill for August are being put in an interest-free forbearance — payments are not required during forbearance. Borrowers enrolled in the SAVE Plan who have not yet received a bill for August will also be put in forbearance and therefore will not receive a bill."

The 8th Circuit's ruling responded to a lawsuit led by Missouri's attorney general. The other lawsuit to block SAVE, led by Kansas, now sits with the Supreme Court, and Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar wrote in a briefing to SCOTUS that blocking the plan would lead to "intense confusion" for borrowers. The Education Department has said 8 million borrowers are enrolled in the SAVE plan, including 4.5 million whose incomes qualify them for zero-dollar monthly payments.

The Education Department already directed servicers to proceed with processing borrowers' lower payments. Should the court issue a final ruling that SAVE cannot be implemented, the department will once again have to recalculate borrowers' payments, probably leading some of them to reconfigure their budgets.

Some Republican lawmakers lauded the ruling. Sen. Bill Cassidy, the top Republican on the Senate education committee, said in a statement that the ruling "is another rebuke to President Biden's illegal student loan schemes."

Related stories

"This is an abuse of power before an election in an attempt to buy votes at the expense of American taxpayers," Cassidy said.

Still, the Biden administration has vowed to continue working to provide relief to borrowers. Along with SAVE, the Education Department plans to finalize its broader student-loan forgiveness plan in October, which is expected to benefit more than 30 million borrowers .

"Today's ruling from the 8th Circuit blocking President Biden's SAVE plan could have devastating consequences for millions of student loan borrowers crushed by unaffordable monthly payments if it remains in effect," Cardona said. "It's shameful that politically motivated lawsuits waged by Republican elected officials are once again standing in the way of lower payments for millions of borrowers."

Who is JD Vance? Things to know about Donald Trump’s pick for vice president

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Former President Donald Trump on Monday chose U.S. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio to be his running mate as he looks to return to the White House.

Here are some things to know about Vance, a 39-year-old Republican now in his first term in the Senate:

Vance rose to prominence with the memoir ‘Hillbilly Elegy’

Vance was born and raised in Middletown, Ohio. He joined the Marines and served in Iraq, and later earned degrees from Ohio State University and Yale Law School. He also worked as a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley.

Vance made a name for himself with his memoir, the 2016 bestseller “Hillbilly Elegy ,” which was published as Trump was first running for president. The book earned Vance a reputation as someone who could help explain the maverick New York businessman’s appeal in middle America, especially among the working class, rural white voters who helped Trump win the presidency.

“Hillbilly Elegy” also introduced Vance to the Trump family. Donald Trump Jr. loved the book and knew of Vance when he went to launch his political career. The two hit it off and have remained friends.

He was first elected to public office in 2022

After Donald Trump won the 2016 election, Vance returned to his native Ohio and set up an anti-opioid charity . He also took to the lecture circuit and was a favored guest at Republican Lincoln Day dinners where his personal story — including the hardship Vance endured because of his mother’s drug addiction — resonated.

Image

Vance’s appearances were opportunities to sell his ideas for fixing the country and helped lay the groundwork for entering politics in 2021 , when he sought the Senate seat vacated by Republican Rob Portman, who retired.

Trump endorsed Vance. Vance went on to win a crowded Republican primary and the general election.

He and Trump have personal chemistry

Personal relationships are extremely important to the former president and he and Vance have developed a strong rapport over years, speaking on the phone regularly.

Trump has also complimented Vance’s beard, saying he “looks like a young Abraham Lincoln.”

Vance went from never-Trumper to fierce ally

Vance was a “never Trump” Republican in 2016. He called Trump “dangerous” and “unfit” for office. Vance, whose wife, lawyer Usha Chilukuri Vance, is Indian American and the mother of their three children, also criticized Trump’s racist rhetoric, saying he could be “America’s Hitler.”

But by the time Vance met Trump in 2021, he had reversed his opinion, citing Trump’s accomplishments as president. Both men downplayed Vance’s past scathing criticism.

Once elected, Vance became a fierce Trump ally on Capitol Hill, unceasingly defending Trump’s policies and behavior .

He is a leading conservative voice

Kevin Roberts, president of the conservative Heritage Foundation, called Vance a leading voice for the conservative movement, on key issues including a shift away from interventionist foreign policy, free market economics and “American culture writ large.”

Democrats call him an extremist, citing provocative positions Vance has taken but sometimes later amended. Vance signaled support for a national 15-week abortion ban during his Senate run, for instance, then softened that stance once Ohio voters overwhelmingly backed a 2023 abortion rights amendment.

He is married to a lawyer who was a Supreme Court clerk

Vance met his wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, at Yale, where she received both her undergraduate and law degrees. She spent a year clerking for future Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh when he served as an appeals court judge in Washington, followed by a year as a law clerk to Chief Justice John Roberts.

She had been a trial lawyer for the Munger, Tolles and Olson law firm. Her law firm announced Monday that she had left the firm.

“Usha has been an excellent lawyer and colleague, and we thank her for her years of work and wish her the best in her future career,” Munger, Tolles & Olson said in a statement.

Vance has adopted Trump’s rhetoric about Jan. 6

On the 2020 election, he said he wouldn’t have certified the results immediately if he had been vice president and said Trump had “a very legitimate grievance.” He has put conditions on honoring the results of the 2024 election that echo Trump’s . A litany of government and outside investigations have not found any election fraud that could have swung the outcome of Trump’s 2020 loss to Democratic President Joe Biden.

In the Senate, Vance sometimes embraces bipartisanship. He and Democratic Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown co-sponsored a railway safety bill following a fiery train derailment in the Ohio village of East Palestine . He’s sponsored legislation extending and increasing funding for Great Lakes restoration, and supported bipartisan legislation boosting workers and families.

Vance can articulate Trump’s vision

People familiar with the vice presidential vetting process said Vance would bring to the GOP ticket debating skills and the ability to articulate Trump’s vision.

Charlie Kirk, founder of the conservative activist group Turning Point USA, said Vance compellingly articulates the America First world view and could help Trump in states he closely lost in 2020, such as Michigan and Wisconsin, that share Ohio’s values, demographics and economy.

Associated Press writers Jill Colvin in Milwaukee and Mark Sherman in Washington contributed to this report.
