Growing and established cities are continually meeting new infrastructure needs and maintaining older systems, such as highways, bridges, and airports. The School of Engineering's Ph.D. in Civil Engineering program produces graduates dedicated to enriching the field. Research-oriented and focused on the latest developments in the discipline, our program readies you for civil engineering research careers in the private sector. It also prepares you to teach at the university level, ensuring the most recent advancements in the field are shared with a new generation of civil engineers.

Concentrations

As a Ph.D. candidate, you will choose to concentrate in 1 of these sub-disciplines:

  • structural materials and engineering
  • geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering
  • environmental and water resources engineering
  • construction management and engineering
  • highway and traffic engineering
  • urban infrastructure systems

Other focus areas are possible and can be developed with the assistance of faculty advisers. All subject areas must be relevant to the degree sought, and a faculty member must be willing and able to guide your research.

Admission requirements.

  • Admission to this program requires an MS in Civil Engineering or equivalent with a GPA of 3.5 or better (on a 0-4 scale).
  • GRE scores are required for all full-time Ph.D. applicants.
  • Foreign applicants must take the TOEFL examination and submit the results for consideration.

In criteria 1 and 2 above, the “equivalent" can be achieved in several ways. You may have an MS degree with a different title that covers substantially the same material. In more general terms, you must demonstrate that you have the equivalent of all undergraduate and masters-level coursework to be able to pursue doctoral-level work in the chosen major area, as well as in a minor area within the umbrella of civil engineering. Further, “equivalence” is evaluated based on the totality of your undergraduate and graduate record, not course-by-course. Thus, if you wish to pursue doctoral work in Environmental Engineering, for example, you must have the entire undergraduate and masters-level course background expected in Environmental Engineering, but you do not need to demonstrate such a background in structures.

Because admission to a Ph.D. program requires a relevant MS (or equivalent), applicants who have not yet achieved a master’s degree would normally be admitted as MS students. They are expected to earn an MS degree while completing their major and minor course requirements. In rare cases, an applicant with only a BS degree may be directly admitted into the Ph.D. program with the written approval of the department head.

Find out more about  Admission Requirements .

Transfer Credits

A maximum of 48 credits of approved graduate work may be transferred and applied to your degree requirements. They would be awarded on a course-by-course basis or by the transfer of an MS degree from another institution in satisfaction of 30 graduate credits. The latter requires a recommendation from the department’s Graduate Committee and the approval of the department head. Transfer credits must be approved by the academic adviser, the graduate coordinator, and the department head.

Every Ph.D. student upon admission is assigned an academic adviser, who is designated by the department head. Any member of the civil engineering faculty may be an academic adviser to a Ph.D. student. The first meeting should take place shortly after receiving an acceptance letter from the Admissions Office. During this first meeting the student’s Program of Study should be established. The Program of Study should include a list of the fundamental and advanced topics that will comprise the specific courses, the subject matter for the qualifying exam and possible research areas.

Program Requirements

Qualifying Examinations and Dissertation

Before becoming a candidate for the Ph.D., you must pass a qualifying examination.

Immediately after you pass your qualifying exam, a Dissertation Committee will be formed. This panel of experts will guide your course of study and research work. You are required to submit and present a dissertation proposal. The culmination of your Ph.D. work will be the defense of the final draft of your dissertation. There are important requirements involved in the qualifying examination and dissertation processes.  One of these requirements is that your defense of the final draft of your dissertation must take place in-person at the Brooklyn Campus.

One of the main advantages of programs that do not require GRE scores is that they may attract a more diverse group of applicants. Some prominent benefits of pursuing PhD program in USA without GRE are mentioned below:

  • Students who may have been discouraged from applying in the past due to low test scores now have the opportunity to showcase their research potential in other ways.
  • Additionally, students who do not have the financial means to take multiple tests or pay for test prep may now have access to more PhD programs.
  • Another benefit of pursuing a PhD program without the GRE exam requirement is that it allows students to focus more on their research interests and experiences rather than their test-taking abilities. This can lead to a more well-rounded and diverse group of students within the program, as well as a stronger emphasis on research and academic achievements.

Furthermore, programs that do not require GRE scores may also have a more flexible and personalized approach to the application process. This can include a greater emphasis on letters of recommendation, personal statements, and interviews, which can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the applicant’s potential and fit within the program. This can also lead to a more supportive and collaborative academic environment, as students are selected based on their individual strengths and potential rather than a standardized test score.

Ph.D. programs in the USA that don’t mandate the GRE typically share comparable prerequisites with those that do require the exam. The main distinction lies in the fact that these programs might emphasize other facets of an applicant’s profile more, such as their academic history, research involvement, and letters of endorsement.

Academic Records: Applicants need to furnish official transcripts from all institutions they attended. These records should outline completed courses, grades received, and overall GPA.

Letters of Recommendation: Most Ph.D. programs require two to three letters of recommendation from professors or supervisors who are familiar with the applicant’s academic and research capabilities.

Statement of Intent: Applicants must provide a statement of intent detailing their research interests, career aspirations, and reasons for pursuing a Ph.D.

CV/Resume: Applicants should submit a comprehensive CV or resume highlighting their academic and research accomplishments.

Writing Samples: Certain Ph.D. programs might ask for writing samples, such as research papers or essays, that showcase the applicant’s writing and analytical skills.

English Language Proficiency: International students whose first language isn’t English might need to take the TOEFL or IELTS to demonstrate English proficiency.

It’s crucial to recognize that the specific prerequisites for Ph.D. programs in the USA without the GRE can differ based on the university and program. Hence, meticulously examine the application guidelines for each program to ensure you fulfill all requirements.

In conclusion, a growing number of US universities are dropping the GRE requirement for their PhD programs, allowing students to apply based on their academic and research potential rather than a standardized test score. While there are still advantages to taking the GRE exam, pursuing a PhD program without the requirement may offer more opportunities for a diverse range of students.

By focusing on research experience, academic achievements, and strong letters of recommendation, you can stand out in your application and find the right program for you.

In response to the test accessibility issues caused by COVID-19, the Whiting School of Engineering has decided to make the GRE exam optional for the 2021 admissions cycle. This only applies to graduate applications for the following start terms: Spring 2021, Summer 2021, and Fall 2021. For those applicants that have GRE scores ready, the university will accept them. Please there will be no admissions advantage in submitting GRE scores. Likewise, there will be no disadvantage to any applicant for not submitting GRE scores. The university programs engage in holistic admissions review, and the university expect many competitive applications will not include GRE scores this year.

GRE scores are one of a number of factors taken into consideration when reviewing applications. These include personal statement, transcripts, standardized test scores, and letters of recommendation.

TOEFL and IELTS scores are one of a number of factors taken into consideration when reviewing applications. Although there is no minimum requirement, the Whiting School of Engineering recommends a minimum of 100 for the IBT, 250 for the CBT, and 600 for the PBT, and a score of 7.0 for IELTS.

Applicants seeking admission into the Graduate Program in Civil Engineering, leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees administered by the Graduate School, should have a B.S. degree with adequate background in science, mathematics and engineering. In order to specialize in Structural Mechanics and Materials the B.S. degree should have emphasis in mechanics, structural engineering and materials. In order to specialize in Multi-modal Transportation Engineering, the B.S. degree should have imparted a basic background in transportation engineering. In order to specialize in Risk and Reliability Engineering, the B.S. degree should emphasize in one of the majors in engineering.

The Master of Engineering Program is administered by the School of Engineering and the admission requirements are less restrictive. Additional information can be found on the Construction Management Program page.

The minimum time required for completing the M.S. degree with thesis-option is three semesters and a summer, but two years is common. The minimum time required to complete the Ph.D. degree by those admitted with a B.S. degree is four years, but five years is common. Those admitted with a M.S. degree can complete the Ph.D. degree in the minimum time of three years.

The M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering provide an in-depth understanding to the graduate students in the concentration areas of (1) materials and structures (M S), or (2) civil infrastructure systems (CIS). The M.S. program will prepare students for industry expertise or for further advanced studies in the relevant area of concentration. The graduate program in Civil Engineering offers three M.S. degrees:.

M.S. with thesis option requires 24 credit hours of graduate-level course work (5000 or higher), 6 hours of research thesis course-work, and the completion of a thesis.

M.S. with no thesis option requires 30 credit hours of graduate-level course work (5000 or higher), but does not require a project, practicum, or reporting beyond the requirements for successful completion of the individual courses.

M.S. in passing is a version of M.S. with no thesis, awarded to PhD students who have completed at least 30 hours of graduate study towards their PhD with GPA of 3.0 or better.

M.S. students in the CIS concentration area are required to take four courses from three competency areas of Advanced Mathematics, Systems Engineering, and Data Analytics. The course lists for each competency area appear in Table 1. M.S. students in the M S concentration area are required to take four courses from four competency areas of Advanced Mathematics, Data Analytics, Materials and Mechanics, and Computational Numerical Modeling. The course lists for each M S competency area appear in Table 2. Each student is required to take at least one course from each competency area. Transfer courses and individual studies cannot be used to satisfy any part of the core course requirements. At least 6 hours of didactic course work taken in the major area (i.e., with CE designation) must be completed at Vanderbilt.

In the case of M.S. with thesis option, the DGS in consultation with the research adviser and the student will appoint a thesis committee by the end of the first semester in the program. The thesis committee will be responsible for guiding the student in production of a thesis, monitoring the student progress in completing the requirements toward the degree, and ensuring the quality of graduate work. The student is encouraged to give an oral presentation of their thesis to the department.

Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering (excluding the Construction Management specialization):.

in Civil Engineering at Vanderbilt will prepare Civil Engineers with advanced and broad knowledge and understanding in a range of civil engineering areas for careers in consulting, engineering design and management. The philosophy for the M.Eng.

The requirements for completing the M.Eng. in Civil Engineering are as follows:.

At least six graduate courses (5000 or higher) with civil engineering designation must be completed. (Transfer courses count toward completing this requirement.).

At least one course from each of the four competency areas indicated in Table 3 must be completed at Vanderbilt. (Transfer courses do not count toward completing this requirement.).

At least one design oriented course (CE 5200, CE 5210, CE 5250, CE 5500) must be completed at Vanderbilt. Transfer courses do not count toward completing this requirement.

The goal of the Ph.D. Preliminary Examination is to assess the potential of the graduate student in being successful in graduate level research in the relevant area of concentration and completing PhD studies with skills and qualifications listed in the vision statement. The PhD preliminary exam requirements are as follows:.

The student performs a research project within the second semester of enrollment (typically Spring). In order to facilitate the internship, the student enrolls in 3 research hours during the second semester. 3 research hours cannot be counted towards any course credit hour requirements, but count towards the 72 credit hour requirement for PhD.

The four-member committee (including the offeror) is proposed by the offeror from among the relevant graduate committee (CIS or M S).

Pass: The student satisfies all requirements of the preliminary examination and is allowed to continue toward a PhD degree.

Provisional Pass: The student satisfies some aspects of the preliminary examination requirements, whereas others have been deemed unsatisfactory by the committee. The committee recommends remedial action(s) and the time frame within which, the remedial actions must be completed. The remedial actions range from a complete retake of the preliminary examination, taking specific courses, or other actions as deemed appropriate by the committee. In case of a provisional pass, the graduate adviser of the student must follow the progress of the student towards successful completion of the remedial actions and approve their completion.

Fail: The student cannot continue towards the PhD degree and is removed from the PhD program. The student is allowed to continue pursuing an M.S. degree.

The PhD qualifying examination is expected to be held at the end of the third academic year. The student is expected to have at least one journal article submitted for publication (or published) by the time of the qualifying exam on the dissertation research performed at Vanderbilt University. The committee could include experts from outside Vanderbilt. Committee members outside the department must be approved by the Graduate School upon request by the DGS in order to be appointed to the dissertation committee. Any variation of the committee makeup must be approved by the Graduate School. The committee must be appointed by the Graduate School no less than two weeks before the time the student expects to take the qualifying examination.

The qualifying exam consists of the review of a written research proposal and a private oral defense of the proposal before the PhD committee. References may appear in additional pages. Relevant technical details could be included as appendices, but the 15-page proposal must be self-contained and understandable without the necessity to review the appendices. An up-to-date and detailed CV must also be attached to the research proposal. In the oral presentation, the student should clearly and briefly present the project, as well as answer questions from the members of the committee. The dissertation committee should receive the proposal no later than a week before the exam. Students approved in the qualifying exam are recommended for promotion to candidacy, at which time they officially become PhD candidates.

By the time of graduation, each PhD student is expected to have published or submitted for publication a sufficient number of high quality, peer-reviewed journal articles based on their dissertation research. The number of publications may vary significantly from one area to another. The student and the research adviser are expected to have a clear, mutual understanding of the expectation for the journal publication output. Additionally, the student is expected to have attended and presented their dissertation research in at least one technical conference or workshop during their PhD.

Students in Civil and Infrastructure Systems (CIS) Engineering concentration area are required to take four courses from three competency areas of Advanced Mathematics, Systems Engineering, and Data Analytics. The courses for each CIS competency area are listed in Table 1. Students in the Materials and Structural (M S) Engineering concentration area are required to take four courses from four competency areas of Advanced Mathematics, Data Analytics, Materials and Mechanics, and Computational Numerical Modeling. The course lists for each M S competency area are listed in Table 2. For both the CIS and the M S concentration areas, each student is required to take at least one course from each competency area. Transfer courses and individual studies cannot be used to satisfy any part of the core course requirements. The students are required to complete the core course requirements before they can take the PhD qualifying examination. For PhD students, a minimum of 30 hours of formal coursework must be completed. Each student is allowed to take a maximum of 6 credit hours as independent study courses at Vanderbilt. The students should consult their research adviser (if adviser has not yet been assigned, the DGS) in choosing the core as well as other courses.

Civil and Environmental Engineering

General information, program offerings:, director of graduate studies:, graduate program administrator:.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers three graduate degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.), and Master of Engineering (M.Eng.). Students must be admitted to one of these three degree programs. For each of these degree programs, the department offers individualized tracks of graduate study that are aligned with the following research areas:

  • Mechanics, Materials, and Structures
  • Architecture, Arts, and Archaeology
  • Hydrology and the Atmospheric Environment
  • Sustainable, Resilient Cities and Infrastructure Systems
  • Chemistry, Biology, and Technology
  • Water, Climate, and Energy

The student-faculty ratio in the department is kept small to allow for productive working relationships between students and their advisers. The department maintains an atmosphere where close interaction between students and faculty is the norm, whereby students benefit from the background, experience, and knowledge their advisers have gained in solving important engineering problems.

Additional departmental requirements

Applicants are required to select an area of research interest when applying.

Program Offerings

Program offering: ph.d., program description.

When a Ph.D. student enters the department, an adviser is assigned to the student based on the student's area of interest.

Every admitted Ph.D. student is given financial support in the form of a first-year fellowship.

In addition, all admitted Ph.D. students are automatically considered for the prestigious Wu and Upton Fellowships.

Demonstrated proficiency in appropriate coursework is required for the Ph.D. degree. Most of this coursework needs to be completed prior to the General Examination. Courses required for admission to the General Examination are as follows:

  • CEE 509 - Independent Study I
  • CEE 510 - Independent Study II
  • 2 applied mathematics or computational methods courses
  • 6 additional courses covering depth in, and breadth around, one's research

CEE 509 and 510: The CEE 509/510 requirements are meant to demonstrate the requisite abilities to carry out advanced independent research. These requirements must be completed by the end of the semester of the General Examination.

Applied mathematics or computational methods: The mathematics/computational methods requirements are meant to provide a strong foundation in quantitative skills.  The requirement may be fulfilled by courses in advanced calculus, probability, data science, statistics, numerical methods, scientific computation, or related fields.

Specialized knowledge courses:  Each student must complete at least three courses that focus on the student's specific research. These courses are directly related to the foundational knowledge of the Ph.D. thesis research, and they ensure that the student has a firm grasp of relevant fundamentals. At least three specialized knowledge courses must be completed by the end of the semester of the General Examination.

The breadth of knowledge courses:   In addition to taking courses in specialized subjects, students must broaden their education beyond the intellectual boundaries of their own research. This is important for success in future academic or non-academic careers, given the complexity of modern civil and environmental challenges and the need for interdisciplinary teams to solve them. To be active members or future leaders of such teams, students must be able to converse and understand a range of issues, concepts, and approaches that are far wider than their detailed research specialization. Each student must demonstrate proficiency in at least three "breadth" courses.  These courses must cover multiple areas outside the student’s core research area. One of the breadth courses may be taken after the General Examination.

Grade requirements:   All required Ph.D. coursework must be taken for a grade (no P/D/F, no audit). The average grade of all graduate courses in the student’s overall program of study must a "B" (3.00) or better.

General exam

Students are expected to take the general examination within the first two years of Ph.D. studies. Students are not normally readmitted to a third year (fifth term) of graduate study unless they have taken the General Examination. No student will be readmitted to a fourth year (seventh term) of graduate study without successful completion of the General Examination.

In cases where equivalent and relevant graduate coursework has been completed before enrollment as a Ph.D. student at Princeton, a student may propose to use that prior coursework to satisfy one or more course requirements and demonstrate coursework proficiency. A student must submit to the DGS a copy of the syllabus and other supporting material for review by CEE faculty before submitting the General Exam Request Form. This material must be submitted by the end of the first semester of Ph.D. study at Princeton. Note that prior coursework from undergraduate studies, even if taken at the graduate level, is unlikely to be approved as a substitute for the coursework requirements.

General Examination Request form:  The General Exam Request Form consists of the student's plan to meet the coursework proficiency requirements, the title of the Ph.D. research, and the research abstract. The form, normally submitted in the semester before taking the General Examination, is reviewed by CEE faculty to ensure demonstrated proficiency in relevant subject areas. For plans that are not approved, feedback is given to the student to modify the plan. Once approved, any deviations from the approved coursework plan must be submitted to the faculty adviser and DGS. A full review by the CEE faculty may be required for substantial coursework changes.

Research Proposal:  A dissertation research proposal is due to the Graduate Program Administrator in advance of the General Examination. This document forms the basis of the student's General Examination oral presentation. It must demonstrate adequate background knowledge, clear and concise communication skills, and the ability to plan and formulate a research project.

Examination Structure:  The General Examination Committee consists of four to six examiners, of whom at least three are CEE faculty members. The student’s adviser normally chairs the Committee. The General Examination is scheduled for up to three hours and is conducted as an oral examination. The General Examination consists of a presentation by the student, followed by questioning from the committee on the presentation material, as well as broader topics related to the student’s research preparation. The basis of the presentation must be the written Research Proposal. The presentation will typically last 30-40 minutes. The General Examination Committee provides a written evaluation to the DGS of the sufficiency of the student's preparation and knowledge to undertake the proposed dissertation research.

Qualifying for the M.A.

The Master of Arts (M.A.) degree is normally an incidental degree on the way to full Ph.D. candidacy. It is earned after a student successfully completes the required coursework and the general examination.  It may also be awarded to students who, for various reasons, leave the Ph.D. program, provided that the coursework requirements have been met and the sections of the general exam showing proficiency and scholarship have been passed.  In such cases, it is not required that students have completed the part of the general exam involving a research seminar based on a dissertation proposal.

Students admitted to the Ph.D. program who do not wish to complete the program may be considered for an M.S.E. degree with approval from the department and the Graduate School.  Ph.D. students who have already been awarded the incidental M.A. are not eligible to earn an M.S.E.

Teaching experience is considered to be a significant part of graduate education. It is recommended that Ph.D. candidates assist with course instruction for at least one term.

Post-Generals requirements

Yearly Meetings with Research Committee Upon completing the general examination, students must have a research committee consisting of the adviser and two or more additional faculty members. The research committee meets with the candidate at least once per academic year to supervise the research and provide feedback.

Dissertation and FPO

Final public oral (FPO) examination:  Upon completion and acceptance of the dissertation by the Department, the candidate will be admitted to the final public oral examination.

The Ph.D. is awarded after the candidate’s doctoral dissertation has been accepted and the final public oral examination sustained.

Program Offering: M.S.E.

The M.S.E. program has a strong research focus, including coursework, culminating with the requirement of an M.S.E. thesis.  The M.S.E. is usually completed within two academic years of full-time study. Financial support in the form of a research or a teaching assistantship may be available for students enrolled in this program.

The course requirements are fulfilled by successfully completing 10 one-semester courses, two of which are the required research courses (CEE 509 Independent Study I and CEE 510 Independent Study II). The M.S.E. degree is usually completed within two academic years of full-time study.

The M.S.E. program has a strong research focus reflected in the requirement of a master’s thesis. By the second term of study, a committee consisting of the adviser and one additional faculty member is formed to guide and supervise the candidate's thesis research. Candidates must prepare and submit an acceptable thesis as well as present an open seminar on their research.

Program Offering: M.Eng.

A Master of Engineering degree is offered to students interested in the applied aspects of engineering and wish to prepare for professional practice and consulting. There is no research required for this degree program. The M.Eng. degree is completed in one academic year of full-time study.

There is no financial support for students in this degree program. Students interested in research-focused degrees should apply to the M.S.E. or Ph.D. degree programs instead, where financial support through teaching and research is available.

Students interested in the M.Eng. degree should contact the departmental director of graduate studies before application. The program also provides formal study in nontechnical areas such as corporate finance, public policy, and regulatory issues.

A student fulfills the requirements by successfully completing 8 one-semester courses. The coursework is intended to be at the graduate level (500), though specific undergraduate courses may be approved in advance by the student’s adviser and Director of Graduate Studies. No more than four courses may be taken at the undergraduate level. The   average grade of all graduate courses in the student’s overall program of study must be 3.0 or better.  All courses must be taken for a grade, and any PDF or audit courses will not be counted toward course requirements.

How To Do Ph.D. Without GRE?

These conditions can help in waving off the GRE scores for the candidates:

1. Undergraduate GPA Cut-off

Meeting  certain undergraduate GPA requirements often leads to some schools waiving off the GRE score requirement. Like at the Illinois Institute of Technology, the GRE is waived for all master’s degree applicants (except in Architecture) with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale. This is also a common requirement/threshold for these types of policies.

2. Other Graduate Degree

You may also find that many programs are willing to waive off the GRE score requirement if you already hold a graduate degree. This will add significant credibility for them, and thus they may accommodate your application without a GRE score.

3. Professional Experience

Applicants with relevant work experience can also get the GRE score requirement waivered depending on the schools’ policies. Generally, 5 years is a standard when it comes to such work experience expected but do a search around and check if more years of work experience is asked for the program or school you are applying to.

Graduate Program Without GRE Scores Required

While most colleges and programs require GRE, there are certain types or categories of programs that do not need a GRE score, and they have been described as follows-

1. MFA Programs

Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programs are advanced degrees for those involved in the creative pursuits—music, film, theatre, creative writing, painting, fine arts, etc. Since it is a creative and expressive field of study, your portfolio and auditions speak louder than your GRE score and are a better judge of your talent and capabilities. Thus MFA programs usually either waive off the requirement of GRE scores or make it evident that they are not too important.

2. Executive Programs

These programs are designed to expand specific professional skills,  making   the work experience more pertinent than test scores. Institutes recognize the fact that people with well-established careers will find these programs more attractive if they will not be required to waste their time taking GRE tests, so they usually do not keep that as a criterion.

However, the catch is that you more often than not need to have a certain amount of work experience ( generally 5+ years) to apply.

3. Online Master’s Programs

Another area of study where you may find quite a few master’s programs without GRE score requirements is online platforms. Students getting their master’s degrees online don’t have to be fed, housed, placed in classrooms, etc.

Thus, it clearly doesn’t take as many resources to accommodate them as it does for full time or part-time on-campus students. This means online programs can afford to take more students  and hence don’t necessarily need to be as rigorously selective in admissions which gives way to not requiring or being particular about the requirement of a GRE score.

Ans. Non-GRE options may be considered to be less prestigious in comparison to programs requiring GRE; however, the point of importance here is to consider your reasons for applying. If your choice of a program just happens not to require GRE then that is great, but if it is a simple lack of wanting to put in effort on your part and avoiding GRE, then you may want to reconsider your options and future profile. If a low score is what is making you look into such options, then please realize that it is not the most important thing for your candidature and can also be taken again with better preparation.

Ans. If a GRE score is optional, then it is probably not super important or necessary in their evaluation of your application so it should not hurt your chances. However, sending in a good GRE score can always tilt the decision in your favor like an added advantage, so it’s more of a no harm- gain situation.
