What To Do When PowerPoint’s Presenter View Won’t Play Nice

What to Do when PowerPoint’s Presenter View Won’t Play Nice

The Presenter View option allows PowerPoint users to show the audience the slide show while giving the presenter a view of upcoming slides, a timer, notes to yourself, and other handy tools. (If you haven’t yet, be sure to give it a try.)

powerpoint-2013-presenter-view

The problem is that every now and then Presenter View doesn’t happen, and the laptop screen only shows the slides. Most people don’t memorize where these controls are, so in this situation, users are often forced to press on without the use of Presenter View. Since this little headache pops up from time to time, it pays to know how to set this option.

use presenter view

Mac users may also need to be sure that their laptop is not set to mirror the displays. To do this, click on the Apple icon in the top-left of the desktop, then click on System and choose Display. Click on the Arrangement tab at the top of that screen and be sure that the check box next to Mirror Displays is un checked.

PPT does not show all the slides when I do the slide show

I am having a strange issue. When I play a slide show I can not see all the slides. But when I open the slides in my MS powerpoint for edit, I see all the slides. Any reason for that to happen?

The slides you don't see might be hidden. In the thumbnails pane, look for a slash through the slide number at the upper left of the slide thumbnail. In slide sorter view, hidden slides have a slash through the number at the lower right of the slide thumbnail image.

In either case, right click the slide thumbnail and click Hide Slide again to toggle the hidden-ness off.

In my case I have a Custom Presentation set by error:

Open the presentation. On the Slide Show menu, click Set Up Show. In Show Slide set ALL (not Curstom presentation) Click OK.

PowerPoint crashes when attempting slideshow

by Kyle · Published June 22, 2021 · Updated July 15, 2022

You spent a lot of time working on your PowerPoint presentation and are ready to see how it looks. You start the slideshow and… PowerPoint crashes! You can get different error messages depending on the Windows version and PowerPoint version.

Whatever the version, the only option you have is to close the program, or restart the program. But when you load the presentation again and try to start the slide show again, the same thing happens…

Steps to fix it

When PowerPoint crashes when attempting to go into slideshow mode, there is a very common cause that can be easily fixed.

  • Open the PowerPoint application.
  • In PowerPoint, click the File option.
  • Click Options .
  • In the PowerPoint Options window, click the Advanced option in the left-hand panel.
  • Scroll down in the left-hand panel until you see the Display section.
  • Click the OK button to confirm.

This basically tells PowerPoint to use the regular CPU for all calculations, and not use the GPU ( Graphics Processing Unit , or video card).

Very often this is the cause for the problem that powerpoint crashes in presentation mode .

In some cases, it can help to update the video card driver in your computer to a new version. Just check if a new driver is available using a driver program .

Can't run slideshow / screen show won't start; Icon appears on task bar

You doubleclick a PPS file or open a PowerPoint presentation and start a slide show but nothing happens. An icon for the presentation appears on the task bar, but clicking it doesn't switch to the slide show view of your presentation.

The application may have moved, for whatever reason, to a secondary monitor that's not actually there. To fix this:

  • Press Alt+Tab repeatedly to select the application or window that's missing.
  • Press Alt+Spacebar then M (you won't see any result from this because it's happening off screen).
  • Press the arrow keys to move the missing window back onto your main (visible) screen.
  • Press Enter once the missing window is visible. You can then drag it by the title bar to wherever you want it.

The presentation may be set up to use the "Secondary monitor" for slide shows.

If there's only one monitor attached to the computer, it'll be the Primary monitor. The slide show will be shown on the secondary monitor that isn't there, also known as the "air monitor" or "nowhere mon". You see an icon on the task bar and that's it.

To fix the problem: If you're running PowerPoint 2002 or later

  • Choose Slide Show, Set Up Show... from the main menu bar, or if running 2007 or later, choose Slide Show, Set Up show on the Ribbon.
  • In the Set Up Show dialog box, look for the "Multiple Monitors" section and under "Display slide show on" choose "Primary Monitor"
  • Click OK and try viewing your show again

If you're running PowerPoint 2000

  • Choose Slide Show, Set Up Show... from the main menu bar
  • In the Set Up Show dialog box, look for "Show on" and in the dropdown list, change "Primary Monitor" to "Monitor 1"

If that doesn't fix it ... If your laptop is connected to a port replicator, check its video configuration. One user on the PowerPoint Newsgroup reports:

"The presentation was using the primary monitor. But my notebook is connected to a port replicator with a video out that I never use. The port replicator was configured so that the unused video out was the primary and the notebook itself was the secondary. A quick change to turn off the unused video out and the presentation worked like a charm."

More Information

How to determine whether you have a damaged presentation.

There are several ways to determine whether you have a damaged presentation. You can try to open the file on another computer that has PowerPoint installed to see whether the unexpected behavior occurs on the other computer. You can try to create a new file in PowerPoint and see whether the unexpected behavior occurs with the new file. This section describes how to use existing presentations and how to create a new file in PowerPoint to determine whether the presentations have the same behavior.

Method 1: Open an existing presentation

  • In PowerPoint 2007 select the Microsoft Office Button .
  • Select a different presentation, and then select Open.

If this presentation opens and seems to be undamaged, go to Method 3 in this section. Otherwise, go to Method 2 to create a new presentation.

Method 2: Create a new presentation

Step 1: create the presentation.

  • In PowerPoint 2007, select Installed Templates , and then select Introducing PowerPoint 2007 .
  • Select Create . This process creates a presentation that is based on the template.
  • In PowerPoint 2007 select the Microsoft Office Button , and then select Save .
  • Type a name for the presentation, and then select Save .
  • Exit PowerPoint.

Step 2: Open the new presentation

  • In PowerPoint 2007 select the Microsoft Office Button , and then select Open .
  • Select the new presentation, and then select Open .

If you cannot open or save the new presentation, go to Method 3.

If you cannot create a new presentation, PowerPoint may be damaged and a repair should be initiated. (See Method 3, Part 2 below.)

Method 3: General troubleshooting

Windows 10, windows 8.1, windows 8, and windows 7.

This procedure allows your computer to restart without startup add-ons. For a clean restart, follow these steps:

Sign in to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.

Select Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press Enter to start the System Configuration utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, you should type the password or provide confirmation.

On the General tab, select the Selective startup option, and then clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)

On the Services tab, select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then select Disable all.

This step lets Microsoft services continue to run. After you do a clean restart, you should check Office performance and then resume usual startup.

This procedure will cause the Office program to check for issues and repair itself.

Select the Start button and type Control Panel.

Open the Control Panel, go to Uninstall or change a program (or Add or Remove Programs ).

Scroll through the list of programs and find your version of Microsoft Office. Right-select and then select Change .

We suggest that you do the online repair option.

Methods to try if you cannot open a presentation

Method 1: drag the presentation to the powerpoint program file icon, windows 10, windows 8.1, and windows 8.

Right-click the Windows icon on the Taskbar, and then select Run.

Type one of the following depending on your version of PowerPoint:

Select the Enter key.

Locate the Powerpnt.exe icon in Windows Explorer.

Drag the damaged presentation icon from one window to the Powerpnt.exe icon in the other window.

PowerPoint will try to open the presentation. If PowerPoint does not open the presentation, go to Method 2.

Select Start, and then select Documents. Or select Start and then search for Windows Explorer.

If you have the MSI version of PowerPoint 2013 installed, type %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\office15 (PowerPoint 2013 64 bit) or %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\office15 (PowerPoint 2013 32 bit), and then press Enter.

If you have PowerPoint 2013 Select-to-Run installed, type C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15 (PowerPoint 2013 64 bit) or C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15 (PowerPoint 2013 32 bit), and then press Enter.

If you have the MSI version of PowerPoint 2016 installed, type %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\office16, and then press Enter.

If you have PowerPoint 2016 Select-to-Run installed, type %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 (PowerPoint 2016 64 bit) or %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 (PowerPoint 2016 32 bit), and then press Enter.

Method 2: Try to insert slides into a blank presentation

Step 1: create a blank presentation.

  • In PowerPoint 2007, click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click New .
  • Select Blank Presentation, and then select Create.

This process creates a blank title slide. You can delete this slide later after you re-create the presentation.

Step 2: Insert the damaged presentation as slides

  • On the Home tab, select the arrow next to New slides in the Slides group, and then select Reuse Slides.
  • In the Reuse Slides task pane, select Browse. Select the damaged presentation, and then select Open.
  • Select Insert Slide for each slide in the damaged presentation.
  • In PowerPoint 2007 click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Save .
  • Type a new name for the presentation, and then select Save.

Step 3: Apply the damaged presentation as a template

If the presentation does not look the way that you expect after you try these steps, try to apply the damaged presentation as a template. To do this, follow these steps:

On the File menu, select Save as.

  • In PowerPoint 2007 click the Microsoft Office Button , and then click Save as .

This will make a backup copy of the restored presentation that you can use in case the damaged presentation damages this new presentation.

On the Design tab, select More in the Themes group, and then select Browse for Themes.

Select the damaged presentation, and then select Apply. The slide master of the damaged presentation replaces the new slide master.

If you start to experience unexpected behavior after you follow these steps, the template may have damaged the presentation. In this case, use the backup copy to re-create the master slide.

If the backup copy of the new presentation exhibits the same damage or strange behavior as the original presentation, go to Method 3.

Method 3: Try to open the temporary file version of the presentation

When you edit a presentation, PowerPoint creates a temporary copy of the file. This temporary file is named PPT ####.tmp.

The placeholder #### represents a random four-digit number.

This temporary file may be located in the same folder as the location to which the presentation is saved. Or it may be located in the temporary file folder.

Rename the file, and then try to open the file in PowerPoint

Right-select the file, and then select Rename.

Change the old file-name extension from .tmp to .pptx so that the file name resembles the following file name:

PPT ####.pptx

Start PowerPoint.

On the File menu, select Open.

Browse to the folder that contains the renamed file.

Try to open the file in PowerPoint.

More than one file may correspond to the temporary file that was created the last time that you saved the presentation. In this case, you may have to open each file to see whether one is the temporary copy of the presentation.

If there are no temporary files, or if the temporary files display the same kind of damage or strange behavior, go to Method 4.

Method 4: Make a copy of the damaged presentation

  • Right-select the presentation, and then select Copy.
  • In the Windows Explorer window, right-select in a blank space, and then select Paste.

If you cannot copy the file, the file may be damaged, or the file may reside on a damaged part of the computer's hard disk. In this case, go to Method 5.

If you can copy the file, try to open the copy of the damaged presentation in PowerPoint. If you cannot open the copy of the damaged presentation, try to repeat Method 1 through Method 5 in the "Methods to try if you cannot open a presentation" section below by using the copy of the damaged presentation.

Method 5: Run Error Checking on the hard disk drive

  • Exit all open programs.
  • Right-click the Start menu and select File Explorer .
  • Right-select the hard disk drive that contains the damaged presentation.
  • Select Properties, and then select the Tools tab.
  • In Error-checking, select Check Now.
  • Select the check box Automatically fix file system errors.
  • Select the check box Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
  • Select Start.
  • Select Start, and then select Computer.
  • Right-click the hard disk drive that contains the damaged presentation.
  • Select to select the Automatically fix file system errors check box.
  • Select to select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.

Error checking may verify that the presentation is cross-linked and attempt to repair the presentation. However, this is not a guarantee that PowerPoint will be able to read the presentation.

Methods to try if you can open a damaged presentation

Method 1: try to apply the damaged presentation as a template.

  • In PowerPoint 2007, select the Microsoft Office Button , and then select New .
  • Select Blank Presentation , and then select Create . This process creates a blank title slide. (You can delete this slide after you re-create the presentation.)

Step 2: Insert the damaged presentation into the blank presentation

  • On the Home tab, select the arrow next to New slides in the Slides group, and then select Reuse Slides .
  • In the Reuse Slides task pane, select Browse .
  • Select the damaged presentation, and then select Open .
  • Select the Microsoft Office button, and then select Save .

If the presentation does not look the way that you expect it to look after you try follow these steps, try to apply the damaged presentation as a template. To do this, follow these steps:

  • On the File menu, select Save as .
  • In PowerPoint 2007, select the Microsoft Office Button , and then select Save as .

Type a new name for the presentation, and then select Save .

On the Design tab, select More in the Themes group, and then select Browse for Themes .

Select the damaged presentation, and then select Apply . The slide master of the damaged presentation replaces the new slide master.

If the backup copy of the new presentation still displays damage or strange behavior, go to Method 2.

Method 2: Transfer the slides from the damaged presentation to a blank presentation

  • In PowerPoint 2007, select the Microsoft Office Button , and then select Open .
  • Locate the damaged presentation, and then select Open .
  • Select Blank Presentation , and then select Create . This process creates a blank title slide.

Step 2: Copy slides from the damaged presentation to the new presentation

On the View tab, select Slide Sorter . If you receive error messages when you switch views, try to use Outline view.

Select a slide that you want to copy. On the Home tab, select Copy .

If you want to copy more than one slide at a time, hold down the Shift key, and then select each slide that you want to copy.

Switch to the new presentation. To do this, on the Window tab, select Switch Window in the View group, and then select the new presentation that you created in step 1.

On the View tab, select Slide Sorter .

On the Home tab, select Paste .

Repeat steps 2a through 2f until the whole presentation is transferred.

In some cases, one damaged slide may cause a problem for the whole presentation. If you notice unexpected behavior in the new presentation after you copy a slide to the presentation, that slide is likely to be damaged. Re-create the slide, or copy sections of the slide to a new slide.

If the new presentation shows damage or strange behavior, go to method 3.

Method 3: Save the presentation as a Rich Text Format (RTF) file

If there is damage throughout the presentation, the only option to recover the presentation may be to save the presentation as a Rich Text Format (RTF) file. If this method is successful, it recovers only the text that appears in Outline view.

Step 1: Save the presentation in the RTF file format

  • Open the presentation.
  • In PowerPoint 2007, select the Microsoft Office Button , select Save As , and then select Other Formats .
  • In the Save as type list, select Outline/RTF(*.rtf) .
  • In the File Name box, type the name that you want to use, select a location in which to save the presentation, and then select Save .
  • Close the presentation.

Any graphics, tables, or other text in the original presentation will not be saved in the .rtf file.

Step 2: Open the .rtf file in PowerPoint

  • On the File menu, select Open .
  • In the Files of type list, select All Outlines or All Files .
  • Select the .rtf file that you saved in step 1d, and then select Open .

This procedure will re-create the presentation based on the original presentation's outline view.

Problem: PowerPoint Slideshow Freezes on a Slide

Nov 26, 2015 | DataPoint Real-time Screens , How-To

In some conditions, a PowerPoint slideshow that is set up as a kiosk slideshow, and thus intended to run continuously without user interactions, might freeze on a given slide. After running normal for hours or even days, sometimes the slideshow freezes, apparently without any reason.

This is a nightmare for the administrator. Most of the times that we investigated this, is that the slideshow is halted, or frozen, or paused, whatever you want to call it. But you have to know that a PowerPoint slideshow stops advancing whenever it looses the focus of the application. So, in other words, another application is started and takes away the focus from the slideshow.

You might raise the remark that nobody was launching anything on that computer. But there are automated tools and notifications that pop up sometimes. Think about an anti-virus program, or a firewall notification, or a scheduled task. Those processes launch a new program or message on top of your running slideshow. And they cause that the slideshow looses it focus and stop advancing the slideshow automatically. Maybe they just popped up for a few milliseconds and there is no evidence after the startup of it, but still, they took away the focus of the slideshow. And after that, your slideshow is still visible on your screen, but it is hanging now and not advancing to the next slide. At this stage, the only option is to click the slideshow with your mouse, to give the focus back, and then the slideshow continues to run.

This doesn’t appear to work. The slideshow still is stopping, despite ticking “keep slideshow running”. A pity as I thought I’d found the solution. If there is something else I don’t know please advise!

Admin

Hi Ros, I’ve created a trouble ticket for you on our support section. Let’s try to investigate and fix your problem there.

Sumaer Bahl

Hi I am facing the same problem. Ive installed the add on, However still the presentation hangs sometimes.

Please help

Hi, Please create a trouble ticket for this here: https://support.zoho.com/portal/presentationpoint/newticket and send in your log file of today: https://presentationpoint.com/support/logfiles/

Then we can see more. Thx.

Larry Kahm

Will this “add on” work with the PowerPoint Viewer?

I have a kiosk display that experiences this problem and I’m actively looking for a solution

Unfortunately. For PowerPoint add-on, you need the full PowerPoint on your system. The PowerPoint Viewer is for completely static presentations…

Helen Ng

My Power Point is freeze when I insert the picture to my slides and it is prompt to outline instead of slides and I cannot saved by dos Ctrl S as well as my mouse to file and save. What should I do to recover my 15 slides. Please advise

Hi Helen, that problem sounds so very specific and I have never seen that before. I suggest to post your problem at an official Microsoft User group, e.g. https://answers.microsoft.com Good luck and hope you can fix that soon.

Saeed Khan

Hi I am facing the same problem. Presentation hangs often after 1st slide.

Could that be the problem that all other slides are set to hide? Or that you are running a custom slideshow with a limited set of slides?

PowerPoint Video Not Playing? Here’s How to Fix it Fast!

By: Author Shrot Katewa

PowerPoint Video Not Playing? Here’s How to Fix it Fast!

It is annoying when you want to play a video during your presentation speech but PowerPoint just refuses to play the video! The video may either fail to work or display just the audio/video. There are actually several reasons why this could happen!

So, in this article, we will take a closer look at the various issues related to playing video in PowerPoint, and I will also provide you with a few quick solutions to each of the issues.

So, without further adieu, let’s get started!

1. Video Not Playing in Presentation Mode

Although Microsoft PowerPoint is one of the powerful presentation tools out there, it is not perfect. There may be more than a few reasons why video is not playing in the presentation mode of your PowerPoint.

The most common problem that users face is that the format of the media file is either not supported by PowerPoint, or the media file might have missing fragments, or the file may have a syncing issue, or the media file may just be corrupted.

In the following subsection, I will explain the possible solutions to a corrupted media file in your PowerPoint presentation.

1a. PowerPoint Video Cannot Play Media Error

There are two possible solutions to a corrupted file. You can either optimize the media compatibility or clear the temporary data on your Windows operating system. Both of the solutions are described below.

Optimizing media compatibility

Follow the simple steps given below to optimize the compatibility of the video file with your PowerPoint presentation.

Step-1: Go to “Info”

The first step of the process is to go to the “Info” section located in the “ File ” tab, which is the first tab in the ribbon of your PowerPoint window.

Step-2: Click on ‘Check Compatibility’

powerpoint presentation slideshow not working

The next step is to click on the “ Check for issues ” button and select the “ Check compatibility ” option from the drop-down menu.

Step-3: Click on the “Ok” button

After you have selected the “ Check compatibility ” option, Microsoft PowerPoint will automatically detect the media files, report to you the issue with your video file, and try to fix it.

To finish optimizing the media file, click on the “ Ok ” button and the issue should be resolved.

Clearing the temporary files

Microsoft PowerPoint may fail to play your video files if there are too many temporary files on your Windows operating system. To clear these temporary files, follow the easy steps described below.

Step-1: Launch the “Run Prompt”

powerpoint presentation slideshow not working

To being, go to the “ Start ” menu of your computer and launch the “ Run Prompt ”

Step-2: Type in the “%temp%” command

powerpoint presentation slideshow not working

After you have launched the “ Run Prompt ”, type “%temp%” in the search box and hit the “ Ok ” button.

Step-3: Delete all the files

Once you have clicked on the “ Ok ” button, a new folder will open on your screen. This folder contains all the temporary files that are present on your computer.

Select all the files and delete them. Skip the files that are still in use and the video should be good to go.

2. YouTube Video Not Playing in PowerPoint

There are several reasons why a YouTube video may not play in your PowerPoint presentation. Some of the reasons why this may happen and possible solutions to them are given below.

1. The link used to embed the YouTube video was a shared link and not an embedded link. If you have entered the link that is used to share the video, then the video will not play in your PowerPoint presentation. To fix this issue, insert the embedded link of the YouTube video instead of the shared link.

2. The YouTube video that you embedded in your Presentation may not be available anymore. In order to avoid this issue, do not use videos that are in “ Private viewing only ” settings.

3. The embedded file may be in an unsupported format. Most versions of Microsoft PowerPoint supports “.wmv” files. Hence, videos that are in a different format may not play in your PowerPoint presentation. Make sure the video file is in the right format.

3. Video Only Plays Audio in PowerPoint

Sometimes, the video file only plays the audio of the video file in Microsoft PowerPoint.

This may happen either because the inserted video file is not supported by the PowerPoint software, or the file is too large. Another reason might be that the file is corrupted, or the Windows operating system is missing some necessary codecs.

Following are 3 possible solutions to these problems.

Solution 1 – Convert the video file

To convert the video file, follow the simple steps given below.

Step-1: Go to the “Info” section

The first step is to go to the “ Info ” section of the “ File ” tab which is located at the right-most corner of the ribbon of your PowerPoint presentation.

Step-2: Click on the “Media Size and Performance” option

powerpoint presentation slideshow not working

The second step is to click on the “ Media Size and Performance ” option which is the first option in the “ Info ” section

Step-3: Click on the “HD (720)” button

After clicking on the “ Media size and performance ” option, a drop-down menu will appear. From that drop-down menu, click on the “ HD (720) ” option.

This will compress the size of the video and convert it to a supported format.

Solution 2 – Clear temporary files

Like the previous issue, sometimes your computer may be working on too many temporary files, due to which the video file in your PowerPoint presentation may not be functioning properly.

Simply follow the steps described earlier in this article and delete all the temporary files operating in your Windows operating system.

Solution 3 – Install missing codecs

Right out of the box, Windows does not support every media codecs. It is possible that the video file in your PowerPoint presentation is only playing audio because some of the codecs in your Windows are missing.

To fix this issue, you can download a codec pack from the internet. Some of the best Codec packs are,

1. K-Lite Codec Pack

2. Media Player Codec Pack

3. X- Codec pack

4. Audio of the Video Doesn’t Work in PowerPoint

If the audio of the video in your PowerPoint presentation is not working, try all the solutions mentioned in the above section. If it still doesn’t work, then maybe the PowerPoint software is muted in your computer.

To make sure the audio of your PowerPoint is not muted, turn on the video in your presentation and follow the simple steps described below.

Step-1: “Right-click” on the “speaker/headphone” button

At first, you have to “ Right-click ” on the “ Speaker/Headphone ” volume button in the taskbar of your computer. It is the right-most button on the taskbar and its icon looks like a handheld speakerphone (as showcased in the image below)

Step-2: Select the “Open Volume Mixer” option

powerpoint presentation slideshow not working

After you have opened the “ Speaker/Headphone ” menu from your taskbar, click on the “ Open Volume Mixer ” option which is the second option in the menu.

Step-3: Click on the volume icon under the PowerPoint section

powerpoint presentation slideshow not working

Once you have selected the “ Open Volume Mixer ” option, a pop-up window will appear on the bottom right corner of your screen.

Click on the small volume icon with a red cross over it, which will unmute the PowerPoint software on your computer.

5. Video Doesn’t Play Automatically

To play a video file in your PowerPoint presentation automatically, you have to change the playback settings of the video file.

This might sound a little difficult but the whole process is described in 2 simple steps below.

Step-1: Go to the “Playback” tab

powerpoint presentation slideshow not working

At first, turn on the video in your PowerPoint presentation. This will allow you to access the “ Playback ” tab which appears on the ribbon when a media file is played.

Step-2: Select the “Automatically” option

Now, select the “ Automatically ” option which is located in the “ Start ” drop-down menu of the “ Video Options ” section in the “ Playback ” tab.

The video should now play automatically when the slide is opened.

6. PowerPoint Export to Video Not Working

To fix videos not exporting in your PowerPoint presentation, you may have to optimize the media file using the method mentioned earlier in this article.

You might also have to update your PowerPoint software if it is outdated or repair it if needed. To learn more on how to update Microsoft PowerPoint, you can read one of our articles on this topic by clicking here .

I will discuss the process of repairing PowerPoint below:

Step-1: Go to “Add or remove programs”

powerpoint presentation slideshow not working

The first step is to go to the “ Start ” menu of your computer and launch the “ Add or remove programs ” tool.

Step-2: Click on the “Advanced Options” button

powerpoint presentation slideshow not working

The second step is to find your Microsoft Office program and select the “ Advanced options ” button.

Step-3: Select the “Repair” option

powerpoint presentation slideshow not working

After you click on the “ Advanced Options ” button, you will be taken to a new window. From that window, under “ Reset ” select the “ Repair ” option.

Once the scanning and repairing are complete a tick mark will appear beside the “ Repair ” option, which will indicate that the repairing is complete.

7. How to Change Video Source in PowerPoint?

Unfortunately, there is no direct way to change the path of the source of a video in your PowerPoint presentation.

You can use a macro to fix this problem but honestly, it is easiest to simply re-attach the video to your PowerPoint presentation.

To change the video source in your PowerPoint presentation, delete the initial video, move the video file to the same folder as the PowerPoint presentation and insert the video again and the source of the video will change accordingly.

If Your PC Won't Run Windows 11, Here Are 5 Great Linux Operating Systems to Try Instead

A chromebook could be the distraction-free device you’re looking for, android users should disable 2g connectivity, says google, quick links, what are animations, what are transitions, things to note before you begin, how to add, amend, and remove an animation, how to add, amend, and remove a transition, using the morph transition.

PowerPoint's animations and transitions can help you grab your audience's attention, present information in bite-sized chunks, and—when used sparingly—deliver a more professional presentation. In this article, we'll run through the nuts and bolts of these useful PowerPoint tools.

PowerPoint's Animation drop-down is opened, displaying the many different types of animations available.

Animations are effects you can add to your slides' text, pictures, shapes, graphics, tables, and other elements. There are four different types of animations:

  • Entrance animations—These are the effects you can add to make an object appear on your slide in different ways.
  • Emphasis animations—You can add an emphasis animation to an object already visible on your slide, such as changing its size or color.
  • Exit animations—The opposite to entrance animations, exit animations make objects disappear from your slide through different effects.
  • Motion paths animations —You can make an element on your slide move to a different place, with your audience seeing this movement from where it started to where it ends up.

You can use more than one animation on a single object. For example, you can apply an entrance animation to some text, followed by an emphasis animation.

PowerPoint's Transiton drop-down is opened, displaying the many different types of transitions available.

A transition effect dictates how your presentation progresses from one slide to the next, and you can choose from three different levels of complexity:

  • Subtle—These are the most basic types of transitions in PowerPoint, aiding speed and slickness as you jump from one slide to the next.
  • Exciting—You can make your transitions more visually entertaining.
  • Dynamic—A dynamic transition applies to all parts of a slide, except for the background, giving the illusion that the content is rolling through on a single page.

Only one transition effect can be added to each slide, and it's important that you apply the transition to the slide that will be visible once the transition is complete. For example, if you have two slides and want to create a transition effect as you move from slide 1 to slide 2, you will need to apply the transition to slide 2.

Before you add animation and transition effects to your PowerPoint presentation, bear in mind the following tips:

  • Don't add too many animations and transitions . Overusing these features can distract your audiences in ways you didn't intend to, and they can also look tacky and unprofessional. Ask yourself, "Does this make my presentation better?" If the answer is no, don't add it.
  • Another issue with using too many animations and transitions is that it could significantly slow down your PowerPoint file's processing speed , as it adds volume to your file size.
  • Keep things professional in the right contexts. For example, if you're presenting a formal business plan, you don't want to add funky transitions that take ten seconds to complete. Try sticking to slick effects that last less than a second.
  • Use the same transition effect for each slide and, if you can, the same animation for each item.

It's a widely shared opinion that Microsoft 365's desktop apps offer more flexibility and functionality than their web-based counterparts. However, the exact opposite can be said for adding animations, which is significantly easier to do on PowerPoint for the web than via the subscription-only app. So, to create the animations for screenshots in this section, we have used PowerPoint online, rather than the desktop app, and we recommend that you do the same.

Before you add any animations, click "Animation Pane" in the Animations tab on the ribbon. This will open a pane on the right side of your window, which will make seeing and managing your animations much easier.

The Animation Pane button in PowerPoint is selected.

Now, select the item you want to animate. If you want several items on a slide to animate in the same way at the same time, hold Ctrl while clicking them all. Then, click the down arrow in the Animations tab, and choose the appropriate effect.

An item selected in PowerPoint, and the Animation drop-down choices displayed.

You will then see an animation card in the Animation Pane for the effect you just added. Here, you can change the animation type, how it is activated (whether via a click, with the previous animation, or after the previous animation), and the duration and delay.

An animation card in the Animation Pane on PowerPoint for the web.

If you have more than one animation on a slide and want to reorder them, click and drag the six dots next to the relevant animation card upwards or downwards.

The six dots used to reorder animations in the Animation Pane is highlighted, with arrows indicating it can be moved upwards or downwards.

Finally, to remove an animation, click the trash icon on the appropriate animation card.

The trash icons on the animation cards in PowerPoint for the web.

You can also animate paragraphs of text within a text box. To do so, select the relevant text, and follow the same process.

Whether you're using PowerPoint's desktop app or the online version of the program, adding transitions involves a very similar process.

First, select the slide you want to transition to (for example, you'll select slide 2 if you want to create a transition from slide 1 to slide 2) in the slide thumbnail pane, and then click the "Transitions" tab on the ribbon.

A slide selected in PowerPoint, and the Transition tab opened.

To see more transitions, click the down arrow on the right-hand side of the Transition To This Slide group.

The arrow in PowerPoint that, when clicked, displays more transition effects.

Clicking any of the transition effects on display will do two things—first, it will show you a preview of what that transition will look like, and second, it will apply that transition to that slide.

You can then amend the options (such as the direction of the transition) and timing of the transition using the settings on the right side of the Transitions tab. This is where you can also add a sound effect to the transition, or decide whether the transition effect occurs when you click your mouse or automatically after a given length of time.

The additional options that can be added to a PowerPoint transition, such as timing, sound effects, or delays.

If you want to apply the same transition effect and options to all slides, click "Apply To All" in the Timing group of the Transition tab when you have finished setting up your transition's parameters. You can then select individual slides to make further adjustments if needed.

To remove a transition, select the slide in the slide thumbnail pane, and click "None" in the Transitions tab.

A PowerPoint file with the Transitions tab opened, and None selected as the transition type.

PowerPoint's Morph is a transition effect that recognizes differences between the same items on two slides, and smoothly transitions between them when you proceed from one slide to the next. For example, you might have an image on slide 1, and the same image in a different position on slide 2. The morph transition gives your audience the impression that you're still on the same slide, but the objects are merely moving and resizing.

This is different to the motion path animation, which you can set for different items and activate at different times on your slide. The morph transition, however, moves all items together as you move from one slide to the next, saving you from having to apply motion path animations to individual objects. Any objects on the first slide but not the second will simply fade away during the morph transition. Similarly, any new items on the second slide will appear gradually.

In this example, we have a title and an image on slide 1, and the same objects on slide 2 but in different places and different sizes. We created this scenario by copying and pasting the whole of slide 1, and then changing the text and image on slide 2. However, you can also create a blank slide, and then copy and paste the different elements you want to morph.

Two slides in PowerPoint containing the same items but in different positions and different sizes.

Then, we need to select slide 2, and click "Morph" in the Transitions tab on the ribbon.

The morph transition in PowerPoint being applied to slide 2 via the Transitions tab.

Then, press F5 to see your presentation, and witness the smooth morph transition from one slide to the next. You can also use this transition effect to zoom into an image or fade an image into the background. Just ensure that you copy and paste from one slide to the next before you create the transition, so that PowerPoint recognizes them as the same.

If animations and transitions are new to you, check out these other tips that you should also know before you design your next presentation.

How to Curve Text in Google Slides

Cover for How to Curve Text in Google Slides

PowerPoint provides text effects to give it a curved look that can help transform text for PowerPoint templates . Currently, Google Slides does not have a similar curved text feature that can transform the look of text for slide decks you might create or the Google Slides templates you might use for your presentations. However, there are different methods that you can use to create curved text in Google Slides.

How to Curve Text in Google Slides Using Text Box Rotation

By rotating text boxes, you can bend text in Google Slides to create something similar to curved text designs. These text boxes can be aligned like a circle, semi-circle, or other curved design according to your design preferences.

To get started, insert a text box via Insert -> Text Box and enter your text.

Inserting a text box in Google Slides

You can add multiple text boxes to create the curved text look by adding relevant words and phrases. Once your curved text phrase is complete, click on the text box and move it using the line on top to rotate the text. This rotation requires holding the point highlighted in the image below and rotating your mouse to move the text box.

Rotating a text box manually in Google Slides

You can also rotate text by going to Format Options via the right-click context menu to access rotation options for text boxes.

Locating Format Options in Google Slides

The Rotate menu in Format Options provides comprehensive features to rotate and angle your text boxes to suit your needs. If you want to be specific about the angle you want to rotate your text, you can use this menu. From here, you can set an angle to rotate text, rotate the text box 90 degrees, or flip it vertically or horizontally.

Format Options for rotation in Google Slides

The below image shows an example of curved text in Google Slides using text box rotation. By adding multiple text boxes and rotating them via Format Options or via drag and drop, you can create various curved text designs in Google Slides.

Using this method can provide you with a number of advantages. For example, you can edit the text boxes and align them anytime. This can give you control over the text natively in Google Slides, such as the color of the text, its size, shadow, reflection, etc.

How to Curve Text in Google Slides Using Text Stylizing Tools

There are a variety of text stylizing tools that can be used to create images with curved text. One such tool is MockoFun. You can create an account and log in to this tool to create curved text images for free. These images can then be used with Google Slides to create curved text slide designs. To get started, go to the MockoFun website and create a free account. Once logged in, go to Create . This will open a workspace where you can create creative content. To create curved text, go to Text -> Curved Text .

Mockofun curved text tool

This will provide you with different curved text styles to choose from. Select a curved text style and drag it to the workspace.

Circle curved text in Mockofun

Click the text to start typing to generate a curved text image. You will notice that the curved image will start generating as you type text. If the text is too large, it might begin overlapping. So, you will have to type and adjust the text accordingly. This can include curved text like a circle or arc, such as a semi-circle.

Semi-circle text with Mockofun

Once you have completed making your curved text image, go to Download and export your output file. When downloading the output file, you can use the given scale to select the quality of the image file. MockoFund supports downloading image files in JPG, PNG, SVG, GIF, WEBP, and PowerPoint (PPTX) file format.

Downloading curved text as JPG image

To insert the curved text into Google Slides, go to the slide to which you want to add the text and select Insert -> Image -> Upload from Computer .

Inserting an image to Google Slides

Adding the curved text image to your Google Slides presentations allows you to create various interesting designs to add visual appeal to your slides. You can adjust the image to add it to Google Slides themes in a way that it appears native to the slide design by ensuring that the colors used are compatible with your presentation theme.

How to Curve Text in Google Slides using PowerPoint

Since PowerPoint natively provides curved text styles, you can design your slides with curved text in PowerPoint and transfer them to Google Slides. For this purpose, you can use any version of PowerPoint, such as PowerPoint for desktop, PowerPoint for the web, or a mobile app.

Type your text into a PowerPoint slide to start using PowerPoint to curve text in Google Slides. You can add the text with a large, prominent font to create curved text that can stand out. Additionally, you can also stylize your text with custom colors before using the curved text effect.

Adding a text box to a blank slide in PowerPoint

Select the text and go to Shape Format -> Text Effects -> Transform and pick a curved text style. PowerPoint provides dozens of curved text styles that you can choose from.

Final Words

Unlike PowerPoint, Google Slides lacks many native slide design features, including the ability to curve text using text styles. However, you can curve text in Google Slides by using text box rotation and third-party tools to create and import curved text as an image. The imported text can be stylized according to the colors and outlook of your Google Slides theme beforehand and then imported and merged in your slides to give it a look that might appear native to your theme. However, if you want text that can be easily edited, the best option is to add multiple text boxes and rotate them to create an angle that makes the text look curved. This text can also be stylized natively in Google Slides anytime.

If you are using a third-party tool to generate an image to curve text and import it to Google Slides, you should ensure that the style of the text matches your theme and that the output file is saved as a high-quality image. This will help prevent the image from pixelation when you add it to Google Slides or run your presentation in Slideshow mode. Some of the most commonly used image formats used with Google Slides include JPG, PNG, and BMP. While Google Slides also supports SVG file format, the vector graphic file support isn’t very robust and might not work properly.
