Optional Reading-Based Discussions

If you wish, you can include the following prompt to encourage students to complete their reading and discuss class topics with their peers.

Discussion Board Standards

It is expected that students will complete the assigned textbook readings prior to posting responses to the discussion board. Student interaction is encouraged. The goal of these online discussions is to simulate the sort of group discussion that can occur in traditional classroom settings. Therefore, students must post comments to at least two classmates. In addition, the instructor may post their reaction to student comments.

The instructor will assess the quality of student contributions towards group discussion and determine a grade for each unit/chapter.

  • Student discussion must be relevant to the specific question being discussed.
  • Students should demonstrate their understanding of the issues, theories, and problems from their textbook readings and homework. Good student commentary will make reference to specific textbook readings and make use of the terminology introduced in the chapter.
  • Students should respond to the discussion questions with an attitude of proper objectivity and a willingness to discuss matters with others who do not share their viewpoint. Criticism of theories or ideas is appropriate; however, the tone of this criticism should remain scholarly rather than personal.
  • Students are encouraged to make use of examples and counter-examples, compare and contrast theories, make reference to past learning, indicate problems or difficulties they have with the theories, and draw out the relevant implications of the discussion.
  • Students may also raise questions they have about the readings and discuss possible answers provided these questions are relevant to the topic of the discussion.

Consider the discussions as opportunities to share ideas about this exciting material with your classmates—enjoy this!

It is often believed that a good assignment topic must inspire, yet it is also true for this field of science where you must be able to research things and provide something that will stand out from the rest. At the same time, finding a good Chemistry topic takes a lot of time since you must either start with a general topic and narrow it down a little bit or turn to an existing lab case study to compose a special report. The latter can easily get challenging, which is why you might require chemistry homework help that will include getting good sources and eliminating possible writing mistakes or misconceptions. In either case, choosing your topics in chemistry, focus on those aspects that you know well. Be it chemical reactions through the lens of environmental sciences or organic chemistry, it must be well-researched and competitive.

Detroit Tigers veteran Gio Urshela designated for assignment as infield prospects arrive

assignment 5 chemistry

The Detroit Tigers have made some big changes.

Not only did the Tigers promote infield prospects Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo for their MLB debuts, but the Tigers also designated veteran third baseman Gio Urshela for assignment, thus removing him from the 40-man roster.

The flurry of roster moves became official before Friday's game against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park.

ON THE FARM: Tigers prospect acquired in Jack Flaherty trade already showing how he 'nukes balls'

Urshela, a nine-year MLB veteran, has been placed on waivers.

The Tigers informed Urshela of the decision to place him on waivers after Thursday's 2-1 win over the Seattle Mariners, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

"That was tough," manager A.J. Hinch said before Friday's game. "I was told when we signed him, by a lot of people in the industry, that he would turn into one of my favorite players, and they were right. He's such a fun pro to be around, but these jobs, they often create situations that you have to make tough decisions."

Urshela, 32, is still owed about $353,000 of his $1.5 million 2024 salary, which he agreed to when he signed a one-year contract with the Tigers at the beginning of spring training. If he is claimed off waivers, the new team will take on his contract.

The Tigers will know by Sunday if Urshela clears waivers or gets claimed. He will not play for the Tigers while awaiting his fate because he has been removed from the 40-man roster, which helps create room for the incoming infield prospects.

SPRING TRAINING: Can newcomer Gio Urshela become everyday third baseman for Tigers in 2024 season?

His remaining salary is affordable, so Urshela is a candidate to be claimed, but he hit just .243 with five home runs, 19 walks and 49 strikeouts in 92 games with the Tigers, posting a .619 OPS. He has been worth minus-5 defensive runs saved at third base.

Urshela didn't generate trade interest from other teams ahead of the July 30 trade deadline , but even a couple of weeks later, he could generate more interest on the waiver wire because other teams don't have to surrender a prospect for him.

If he clears waivers, he would be eligible to sign with a new team for the prorated minimum salary (roughly $174,000) while the Tigers remain responsible for the rest of his contract.

"We have to take a step in a new direction to give opportunities to some young players who have earned it," Hinch said, "and it's going to come at the cost of his spot in our organization, but I will speak highly of Gio and what he's about as a person and as a player, and hopefully, somebody grabs him while they can now."

His most memorable moment as a Tiger occurred July 13, when he hit a walk-off two-run home run to left-center field for an 11-9 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Comerica Park, capping an epic comeback . He also had two homers in a three-game stretch in early June against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

GI-OMG 😱 pic.twitter.com/98a2yYfNCi — Detroit Tigers (@tigers) July 13, 2024

Before the Tigers, Urshela played for five other teams in his 756-game MLB career: the Cleveland Guardians (2015, 2017), Toronto Blue Jays (2018), New York Yankees (2019-21), Minnesota Twins (2022) and Los Angeles Angels (2023). He suffered a season-ending pelvic injury, which didn't require surgery, in mid-June 2023 with the Angels.

He spent three weeks on the injured list in 2024 with a right hamstring strain .

Urshela is a career .273 hitter in the majors.

All-solution processed organic solar cells are the ultimate aim of printable photovoltaics, but their electrical losses arising from poor contact of top electrodes greatly limit efficiency improvement. To solve the problem, a solution-processed hybrid top electrode was constructed using silver nanowires (AgNWs) as the skeleton and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) as the matrix. When constructing the skeleton, a spin-rinsing treatment was first used to reduce the amount of the residual insulating polyvinylpyrrolidone wrapped around the AgNWs to promote intimate contact among the AgNWs in the skeleton. Then, the ZnO-NPs matrix was deposited onto the AgNWs skeleton, bridging the AgNWs skeleton with the underlayer ZnO-NPs electron transporting layer (ETL). The underlayer ZnO-NPs ETL can also induce the growth of the ZnO-NPs matrix to minimize lattice mismatch, which creates additional transport channels from the ETL to the AgNWs skeleton for charge collection. As a result, the obtained electrode significantly enhances the electrical contact in the device, thus delivering record power conversion efficiencies of 16.04% and 14.54% for rigid and flexible all-solution processed OSCs, respectively.

Dodgers' Tommy Edman Won't Return for Revenge Series vs Cardinals

  • Los Angeles Dodgers

While everyone is waiting for Tommy Edman to make his debut in blue, it looks like the talented utility player won't be able to return in time to face his old club, the St. Louis Cardinals.

During an appearance on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gave an update on the recently acquired Edman.

“I think the hope is that he’ll be with us Monday when we get home," Roberts said. "Looking at the calendar, I’m sure Tommy wanted to play against his hold club. But the rehab process, where he didn’t play any defense basically this year, we wanted to get his legs under him. The rehab process kicks him to Monday. That’s kind of the hope.”

Dave Roberts gives the latest on the #Dodgers injuries: Justin Wrobleski will start tonight Tommy Edman returns Monday Max Muncy returns Tuesday 🔗 https://t.co/6YbqEWG3tX pic.twitter.com/I2hVLIICUH — MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM (@MLBNetworkRadio) August 16, 2024

Edman was one of two big names acquired by the Dodgers in a massive three-team trade with the Chicago White Sox and the Cardinals, where Los Angeles received Edman, Michael Kopech, and minor league right-hander Oliver Gonzalez.

In exchange, the Cardinals received right-handed pitcher Erick Fedde, outfielder Tommy Pham, and cash considerations, and the White Sox received utility player Miguel Vargas, infield prospect Jeral Perez, infield prospect Alexander Albertus, and either an additional player or cash considerations.

While Edman is a talented player, he hasn't played Major League Baseball since 2023. He has been out all season recovering from wrist surgery and a recent ankle sprain. Fortunately, Edman has been on a rehabilitation assignment with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate Oklahoma City and is expected to make his return in the near future .

A standout player for the Stanford Cardinals, Edman started every game at shortstop his junior year. He batted .286 with 24 RBIs, and led the team in runs (35), hits (61), triples (4), and stolen bases (8) across 54 games. He was named to the Pac-12 Conference first team.

Edman was selected by the Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB Draft. After some years in minor league, Edman would make his debut on June 8, 2019, where he would become a constant in St. Louis' starting lineup.

Across five seasons with the Cardinals, Edman maintained a .265 batting average while hitting 53 home runs and 222 RBI. He also stole 106 bases

In 2021, Edman won the Gold Glove Award, and was awarded a Fielding Bible Award in 2022, recognizing him as the best multi-position player that year.

Hopefully, Edman will bring the same consistency and defensive prowess to the Dodgers that he brought to the Cardinals.
