Before you begin writing your company summary, remember to stick to the big picture. Other sections of your business plan will provide the specific details of your business. The summary synthesizes all of that information into one page.

  • Appendix Slides: Your pitch deck appendix should always be included alongside a standard pitch presentation. It consists of additional slides you could not show in the pitch deck but you need to complement your presentation.

It is important to support your calculations with pictorial renditions. Infographics, such as pie charts or bar graphs, will be more effective in presenting the information than just listing numbers. For example, a six-month graph that shows rising profit margins will easily look more impressive than merely writing it.

Lastly, since a pitch deck is primarily used to secure meetings and you may be sharing your pitch with several investors, it is advisable to keep a separate public version that doesn't include financials. Only disclose the one with projections once you have secured a link with an investor.

  • Describe the equipment and machinery requirements, and if the company will lease or purchase equipment and machinery, and the related costs that the company estimates it will incur.
  • Provide a list of raw material requirements, how they will be sourced, and the main suppliers that will supply the required inputs.

Any aspiring entrepreneur researching how to start a business will likely be advised to write a business plan. But few resources provide business plan examples to really guide you through writing one of your own.

Here are some real-world and illustrative business plan examples to help you craft your business plan .

7 business plan examples: section by section

The business plan examples in this article follow this template:

  • Executive summary.  An introductory overview of your business.
  • Company description.  A more in-depth and detailed description of your business and why it exists.
  • Market analysis.  Research-based information about the industry and your target market.
  • Products and services.  What you plan to offer in exchange for money.
  • Marketing plan.   The promotional strategy to introduce your business to the world and drive sales.
  • Logistics and operations plan.  Everything that happens in the background to make your business function properly.
  • Financial plan.  A breakdown of your numbers to show what you need to get started as well as to prove viability of profitability.
  • Executive summary

Your  executive summary  is a page that gives a high-level overview of the rest of your business plan. It’s easiest to save this section for last.

In this  free business plan template , the executive summary is four paragraphs and takes a little over half a page:

  • Company description

You might repurpose your company description elsewhere, like on your About page, social media profile pages, or other properties that require a boilerplate description of your small business.

Soap brand ORRIS  has a blurb on its About page that could easily be repurposed for the company description section of its business plan.

You can also go more in-depth with your company overview and include the following sections, like in the example for Paw Print Post:

  • Business structure.  This section outlines how you  registered your business —as an  LLC , sole proprietorship, corporation, or other  business type . “Paw Print Post will operate as a sole proprietorship run by the owner, Jane Matthews.”
  • Nature of the business.  “Paw Print Post sells unique, one-of-a-kind digitally printed cards that are customized with a pet’s unique paw prints.”
  • Industry.  “Paw Print Post operates primarily in the pet industry and sells goods that could also be categorized as part of the greeting card industry.”
  • Background information.  “Jane Matthews, the founder of Paw Print Post, has a long history in the pet industry and working with animals, and was recently trained as a graphic designer. She’s combining those two loves to capture a niche in the market: unique greeting cards customized with a pet’s paw prints, without needing to resort to the traditional (and messy) options of casting your pet’s prints in plaster or using pet-safe ink to have them stamp their ‘signature.’”
  • Business objectives.  “Jane will have Paw Print Post ready to launch at the Big Important Pet Expo in Toronto to get the word out among industry players and consumers alike. After two years in business, Jane aims to drive $150,000 in annual revenue from the sale of Paw Print Post’s signature greeting cards and have expanded into two new product categories.”
  • Team.  “Jane Matthews is the sole full-time employee of Paw Print Post but hires contractors as needed to support her workflow and fill gaps in her skill set. Notably, Paw Print Post has a standing contract for five hours a week of virtual assistant support with Virtual Assistants Pro.”

Your  mission statement  may also make an appearance here.  Passionfruit  shares its mission statement on its company website, and it would also work well in its example business plan.

  • Market analysis

The market analysis consists of research about supply and demand, your target demographics, industry trends, and the competitive landscape. You might run a SWOT analysis and include that in your business plan. 

Here’s an example  SWOT analysis  for an online tailored-shirt business:

You’ll also want to do a  competitive analysis  as part of the market research component of your business plan. This will tell you who you’re up against and give you ideas on how to differentiate your brand. A broad competitive analysis might include:

  • Target customers
  • Unique value add  or what sets their products apart
  • Sales pitch
  • Price points  for products
  • Shipping  policy
  • Products and services

This section of your business plan describes your offerings—which products and services do you sell to your customers? Here’s an example for Paw Print Post:

  • Marketing plan

It’s always a good idea to develop a marketing plan  before you launch your business. Your marketing plan shows how you’ll get the word out about your business, and it’s an essential component of your business plan as well.

The Paw Print Post focuses on four Ps: price, product, promotion, and place. However, you can take a different approach with your marketing plan. Maybe you can pull from your existing  marketing strategy , or maybe you break it down by the different marketing channels. Whatever approach you take, your marketing plan should describe how you intend to promote your business and offerings to potential customers.

  • Logistics and operations plan

The Paw Print Post example considered suppliers, production, facilities, equipment, shipping and fulfillment, and inventory.

Financial plan

The financial plan provides a breakdown of sales, revenue, profit, expenses, and other relevant financial metrics related to funding and profiting from your business.

A one-page business plan is meant to be high level and easy to understand at a glance. You’ll want to include all of the sections, but make sure they’re truncated and summarized:

How to Write a Great Business Plan: Overview and Objectives

This article is part of a series on  how to write a great business plan .

Providing an overview of your business can be tricky, especially when you're still in the planning stages. If you already own an existing business, summarizing your current operation should be relatively easy; it can be a lot harder to explain what you plan to become .

So start by taking a step back.

Think about what products and services you will provide, how you will provide those items, what you need to have in order to provide those items, exactly who will provide those items... and most importantly, whom you will provide those items to.

Consider our bicycle rental business example. It's serves retail customers. It has an online component, but the core of the business is based on face-to-face transactions for bike rentals and support.

So you'll need a physical location, bikes, racks and tools and supporting equipment, and other brick-and-mortar related items. You'll need employees with a very particular set of skills to serve those customers, and you'll need an operating plan to guide your everyday activities.

Sound like a lot? It boils down to:

  • What you will provide
  • What you need to run your business
  • Who will service your customers, and
  • Who your customers are

In our example, defining the above is fairly simple. You know what you will provide to meet your customer's needs. You will of course need a certain quantity of bikes to service demand, but you will not need a number of different types of bikes. You need a retail location, furnished to meet the demands of your business. You need semi-skilled employees capable of sizing, customizing, and repairing bikes.

And you know your customers: Cycling enthusiasts.

In other businesses and industries answering the above questions can be more difficult. If you open a restaurant, what you plan to serve will in some ways determine your labor needs, the location you choose, the equipment you need to purchase... and most importantly will help define your customer. Changing any one element may change other elements; if you cannot afford to purchase expensive kitchen equipment, you may need to adapt your menu accordingly. If you hope to attract an upscale clientele, you may need to invest more in purchasing a prime location and creating an appealing ambience.

So where do you start? Focus on the basics first:

  • Identify your industry: Retail, wholesale, service, manufacturing, etc. Clearly define your type of business.
  • Identify your customer. You cannot market and sell to customers until you know who they are.
  • Explain the problem you solve. Successful businesses create customer value by solving problems. In our rental example, one problem is cycling enthusiasts who don't--or can't--travel with bikes. Another problem is casual cyclists who can't--or choose not to--spend significant sums on their own bikes. The rental shop will solve that problem by offering a lower-cost and convenient alternative.
  • Show how you will solve that problem. Our rental shop will offer better prices and enhanced services like remote deliveries, off-hours equipment returns, and online reservations.

If you are still stuck, try answering these questions. Some may pertain to you; others may not.

  • Who is my average customer? Who am I targeting? (Unless you plan to open a grocery store, you should be unlikely to answer, "Everyone!")
  • What problem do I solve for my customers?
  • How will I solve that problem?
  • Where will I fail to solve a customer problem... and what can I do to overcome that issue? (In our rental example, one problem is a potential lack of convenience; we will overcome that issue by offering online reservations, on-resort deliveries, and drive-up equipment returns.)
  • Where will I locate my business?
  • What products, services, and equipment do I need to run my business?
  • What skills do my employees need, and how many do I need?
  • How will I beat my competition?
  • How can I differentiate myself from my competition in the eyes of my customers? (You can have a great plan to beat your competition but you also must win the perception battle among your customers. If customers don't feel you are different... then you aren't truly different. Perception is critical.)

Once you work through this list you will probably end up with a lot more detail than is necessary for your business plan. That is not a problem: Start summarizing the main points. For example, your Business Overview and Objectives section could start something like this:

History and Vision

Blue Mountain Cycle Rentals is a new retail venture that will be located at 321 Mountain Drive, directly adjacent to an extremely popular cycling destination. Our initial goal is to become the premier provider for bicycle rentals. We will then leverage our customer base and position in the market to offer new equipment sales as well as comprehensive maintenance and service, custom equipment fittings, and expert trail advice.

  • Achieve the largest market share bicycle rentals in the area
  • Generate a net income of $235,000 at the end of the second year of operation
  • Minimize rental inventory replacement costs by maintaining a 7% attrition rate on existing equipment (industry average is 12%)

Keys to Success

  • Provide high quality equipment, sourcing that equipment as inexpensively as possible through existing relationships with equipment manufacturers and other cycling shops
  • Use signage to attract visitors traveling to the national forest, highlighting our cost and service advantage
  • Create additional customer convenience factors to overcome a perceived lack of convenience for customers planning to ride roads and trails some distance away from our shop
  • Develop customer incentive and loyalty programs to leverage customer relationships and create positive word of mouth

You could certainly include more detail in each section; this is simply a quick guide. And if you plan to develop a product or service, you should thoroughly describe the development process as well as the end result.

The key is to describe what you will do for your customers--if you can't, you won't have any customers.

Organising a business plan that is articulate, ambitious and stands to scrutiny, is essential in today’s competitive global economy. This requires plenty of time and research, and the process should not be rushed, even if you are anxious to get your business to market as soon as possible.

First of all, define what you do

Define what your business does and the problem it's trying to solve. If an investor doesn’t understand what your business does after reading the first paragraph of your business plan, you may have lost their attention already.

Make this definition as succinct as possible, as you will only have seconds to make a good first impression - whether an investor is reading your business plan or listening to your pitch face-to-face.

Create your executive summary and description

Include all the relevant information about your business, such as the year it was founded, where your office(s) is located, what you offer, and what differentiates you from competitors.

Next, describe your business in more detail and talk about the strengths and weaknesses of your competitors. Investors will want to learn how your business will capitalise on its opportunities and try to alleviate its threats.

Determine who your ideal investors are

This is an important - often overlooked - factor when businesses are looking for capital. Ideally, you should target investors that have a good track record of investing in successful companies in your industry.

You will need to do your own investigations. For example, you might want to check how an investor's investments are performing, what their reputation is like among their peers, and how often they invest in products or services that are similar to yours.

Get your stats right

This may sound obvious, but it’s very easy to make an error in your financial projections. Investors have a meticulous eye for detail and will spot an obvious mistake.

Make sure your business plan includes the following information:

  • Annual turnover and net profit/loss for the last year
  • Total liabilities
  • Your projected annual turnover and net profit/loss for the next 3 years and the annualised percentage increase
  • The number of customers/clients you have
  • The average expenditure of each customer/client
  • Stats on projections of your industry’s growth in 3, 5 or 10 years (use reliable sources), to garner investors’ enthusiasm

Prepare your written and verbal business pitch

One of the most daunting tasks you will face as a business owner is pitching your product to investors. If you’re familiar with the show ‘Dragon’s Den’, you’ll understand how daunting it can be to pitch to investors who may seem overly critical or sceptical.

However, this is a rather pessimistic interpretation. Investors are not trying to catch you out; they are looking for opportunities that will deliver good long-term returns for them.

Creating a written business pitch gives you more time to perfect your tone and optimise your messaging for your target audience.

However, you’ll still need to be ready to pitch your business verbally when the opportunity arises. Be confident, don’t pause after each question, and memorise important stats (such as last year’s turnover) to instil confidence and build trust in your business.

Explain your marketing strategy

A coherent, carefully planned marketing strategy can help you attract investors' attention, particularly if you work in an industry that they're interested in. Your marketing materials need to demonstrate clearly to investors that your business is in safe hands and your products or services - including your intellectual property - are unique and unlikely to be easily replicated by big corporations.

You'll need to show how you intend to grow your customer base in different environments - such as your website, social media, networking events, word-of-mouth - and how you will measure the success of your marketing campaigns (for example, with click-through rates for online paid media campaigns). At a minimum, investors will expect you to have a well-designed website and a strong social media presence.

Explain your sales strategy

This is your chance to impress investors with your numerical skills. You don't need to be a maths genius to create a great sales plan; however, you need to know your key numbers off by heart and confidently explain how you calculated them.

For example:

  • If you expect your overheads to fall each year and your net profit margins to increase, an investor will want to know where these savings will come from.
  • If you predict that sales will increase by 30% in year 1, 50% in year 2 but 200% by year 3, an investor will want to see the evidence to support these predictions.

Three big mistakes to avoid when preparing a business plan to attract investors:

1.Underestimating or overestimating how much funding you need

If you ask for too little funding, your business may struggle to cover its overheads and repay any debts. But if you ask for too much, a prospective investor may be confused about what you need the money for. They may also ask you to give up more equity from your business.

2. Overestimating your valuation, future revenue or profit

As we alluded to earlier, investors will quickly know when a business is overvalued or your future revenue or profit projections seem too high. Don’t exaggerate. Be honest about where you are now and how much your business could grow with an investor’s help.

3. Being opaque about how you’ll use your investors’ money

Investors don’t inject capital into a business just to help it stay afloat for a short while. This money is supposed to act as a bridge that will get you to the next stage of your business journey.

Creating a business plan that attracts investors is a challenging but rewarding process. You’ll need to articulate your business clearly, have a good understanding of the opportunities and threats in your market, and be ambitious but realistic. You must know your finances and avoid making any careless mistakes in your projections. Ultimately, however, your success will be determined by your ability to pitch your business idea confidently and earn investors’ trust.

Intel reports second-quarter 2024 financial results; announces $10 billion cost reduction plan to increase efficiency and market competitiveness, related documents.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Intel Corporation today reported second-quarter 2024 financial results.

“Our Q2 financial performance was disappointing, even as we hit key product and process technology milestones. Second-half trends are more challenging than we previously expected, and we are leveraging our new operating model to take decisive actions that will improve operating and capital efficiencies while accelerating our IDM 2.0 transformation,” said Pat Gelsinger, Intel CEO. “These actions, combined with the launch of Intel 18A next year to regain process technology leadership, will strengthen our position in the market, improve our profitability and create shareholder value.”

“Second-quarter results were impacted by gross margin headwinds from the accelerated ramp of our AI PC product, higher than typical charges related to non-core businesses and the impact from unused capacity,” said David Zinsner, Intel CFO. “By implementing our spending reductions, we are taking proactive steps to improve our profits and strengthen our balance sheet. We expect these actions to meaningfully improve liquidity and reduce our debt balance while enabling us to make the right investments to drive long-term value for shareholders.”

Cost-Reduction Plan

As Intel nears the completion of rebuilding a sustainable engine of process technology leadership, it announced a series of initiatives to create a sustainable financial engine that accelerates profitable growth, enables further operational efficiency and agility, and creates capacity for ongoing strategic investment in technology and manufacturing leadership. These initiatives follow the establishment of separate financial reporting for Intel Products and Intel Foundry, which provides a "clean sheet" view of the business and has uncovered significant opportunities to drive meaningful operational and cost efficiencies. The actions include structural and operating realignment across the company, headcount reductions, and operating expense and capital expenditure reductions of more than $10 billion in 2025 compared to previous estimates. As a result of these actions, Intel aims to achieve clear line of sight toward a sustainable business model with the ongoing financial resources and liquidity needed to support the company’s long-term strategy.

The plan will enable the next phase of the company’s multiyear transformation strategy, and is focused on four key priorities:

  • Reducing Operating Expenses: The company will streamline its operations and meaningfully cut spending and headcount, reducing non-GAAP R&D and marketing, general and administrative (MG&A) to approximately $20 billion in 2024 and approximately $17.5 billion in 2025, with further reductions expected in 2026. Intel expects to reduce headcount by greater than 15% with the majority completed by the end of 2024.
  • Reducing Capital Expenditures: With the end of its historic five-nodes-in-four-years journey firmly in sight, Intel is now shifting its focus toward capital efficiency and investment levels aligned to market requirements. This will reduce gross capital expenditures* in 2024 by more than 20% from prior projections, bringing gross capital expenditures in 2024 to between $25 billion and $27 billion. Intel expects net capital spending* in 2024 of between $11 billion and $13 billion. In 2025, the company is targeting gross capital expenditures between $20 billion and $23 billion and net capital spending between $12 billion and $14 billion.
  • Reducing Cost of Sales: The company expects to generate $1 billion in savings in non-variable cost of sales in 2025. Product mix will continue to be a headwind next year, contributing to modest YoY improvements to 2025's gross margin.
  • Maintaining Core Investments to Execute Strategy: The company continues to advance its long-term innovation and path to leadership across process technology and products, and the increased efficiency from its actions is expected to further support its execution. In addition, Intel continues to sustain investments to build a resilient and sustainable semiconductor supply chain in the United States and around the world.

Intel is taking the added step of suspending the dividend starting in the fourth quarter, recognizing the importance of prioritizing liquidity to support the investments needed to execute its strategy. The company reiterates its long-term commitment to a competitive dividend as cash flows improve to sustainably higher levels.

Business Unit Summary

Intel previously announced the implementation of an internal foundry operating model, which took effect in the first quarter of 2024 and created a foundry relationship between its Intel Products business (collectively CCG, DCAI and NEX) and its Intel Foundry business (including Foundry Technology Development, Foundry Manufacturing and Supply Chain, and Foundry Services (formerly IFS)). The foundry operating model is a key component of the company's strategy and is designed to reshape operational dynamics and drive greater transparency, accountability, and focus on costs and efficiency. The company also previously announced its intent to operate Altera ® as a standalone business beginning in the first quarter of 2024. Altera was previously included in DCAI's segment results. As a result of these changes, the company modified its segment reporting in the first quarter of 2024 to align to this new operating model. All prior-period segment data has been retrospectively adjusted to reflect the way the company internally receives information and manages and monitors its operating segment performance starting in fiscal year 2024. There are no changes to Intel’s consolidated financial statements for any prior periods.

Intel Products Highlights

  • CCG: Intel continues to define and drive the AI PC category, shipping more than 15 million AI PCs since December 2023, far more than all of Intel's competitors combined, and on track to ship more than 40 million AI PCs by year-end. Lunar Lake, the company’s next-generation AI CPU, achieved production release in July 2024, ahead of schedule, with shipments starting in the third quarter. Lunar Lake will power over 80 new Copilot+ PCs across more than 20 OEMs.
  • DCAI: More than 130 million Intel ® Xeon ® processors power data centers around the world today, and at Computex Intel introduced its next-generation Intel ® Xeon ® 6 processor with Efficient-cores (E-cores), code-named Sierra Forest, marking the company’s first Intel 3 server product architected for high-density, scale-out workloads. Intel expects Intel ® Xeon ® 6 processors with Performance-cores (P-cores), code-named Granite Rapids, to begin shipping in the third quarter of 2024. The Intel ® Gaudi ® 3 AI accelerator is also on track to launch in the third quarter and is expected to deliver roughly two-times the performance per dollar on both inference and training versus the leading competitor.
  • NEX: Intel announced an array of AI-optimized scale-out Ethernet solutions, including the Intel AI network interface card and foundry chiplets that will launch next year. New infrastructure processing unit (IPU) adaptors for the enterprise are now broadly available and supported by Dell Technologies, Red Hat and others. IPUs will play an increasingly important role in Intel’s accelerator portfolio, which the company expects will help drive AI data center growth and profitability in 2025 and beyond. Additionally, Intel and others announced the creation of the Ultra Accelerator Link, a new industry standard dedicated to advancing high-speed, low-latency communication for scale-up AI systems communication in data centers.

Intel Foundry Highlights

  • Intel is nearing the completion of its promised five-nodes-in-four-years strategy, with Intel 18A on track to be manufacturing-ready by the end of this year and production wafer start volumes in the first half of 2025. In July 2024, Intel released to foundry customers the 1.0 PDK for Intel 18A. The company’s first two Intel 18A products, Panther Lake for client — the first microprocessor to use RibbonFet, PowerVia and advanced packaging — and Clearwater Forest for servers, are on track to launch in 2025.
  • Ansys, Cadence, Siemens, and Synopsys announced the availability of reference flows for Intel’s embedded multi-die interconnect bridge (EMIB) advanced packaging technology, which simplifies the design process and offers design flexibility. The companies also declared readiness for Intel 18A designs.
  • During the quarter, Intel named industry veteran Kevin O'Buckley to lead Foundry Services. The company also recently appointed Dr. Naga Chandrasekaran to lead Intel Foundry Manufacturing and Supply Chain. Their leadership will support Intel’s continued development of the first systems foundry for the AI era.

Other Highlights

Intel announced its second Semiconductor Co-Investment Program (SCIP) agreement, the formation of a joint venture with Apollo related to Intel’s Fab 34 in Ireland. SCIP is an element of Intel’s Smart Capital strategy, a funding approach designed to create financial flexibility to accelerate the company’s strategy, including investing in its global manufacturing operations, while maintaining a strong balance sheet.

Q3 2024 Dividend

The company announced that its board of directors has declared a quarterly dividend of $0.125 per share on the company’s common stock, which will be payable Sept. 1, 2024, to shareholders of record as of Aug. 7, 2024.

As noted earlier, Intel is suspending the dividend starting in the fourth quarter.

Intel Corporation Explanation of Non-GAAP Measures

In addition to disclosing financial results in accordance with US GAAP, this document contains references to the non-GAAP financial measures below. We believe these non-GAAP financial measures provide investors with useful supplemental information about our operating performance, enable comparison of financial trends and results between periods where certain items may vary independent of business performance, and allow for greater transparency with respect to key metrics used by management in operating our business and measuring our performance. Some of these non-GAAP financial measures are used in our performance-based RSUs and our cash bonus plans.

Our non-GAAP financial measures reflect adjustments based on one or more of the following items, as well as the related income tax effects. Income tax effects are calculated using a fixed long-term projected tax rate of 13% across all adjustments. We project this long-term non-GAAP tax rate on at least an annual basis using a five-year non-GAAP financial projection that excludes the income tax effects of each adjustment. The projected non-GAAP tax rate also considers factors such as our tax structure, our tax positions in various jurisdictions, and key legislation in significant jurisdictions where we operate. This long-term non-GAAP tax rate may be subject to change for a variety of reasons, including the rapidly evolving global tax environment, significant changes in our geographic earnings mix, or changes to our strategy or business operations. Management uses this non-GAAP tax rate in managing internal short- and long-term operating plans and in evaluating our performance; we believe this approach facilitates comparison of our operating results and provides useful evaluation of our current operating performance.

Our non-GAAP financial measures should not be considered a substitute for, or superior to, financial measures calculated in accordance with US GAAP, and the financial results calculated in accordance with US GAAP and reconciliations from these results should be carefully evaluated.

Acquisition-related adjustments

Amortization of acquisition-related intangible assets consists of amortization of intangible assets such as developed technology, brands, and customer relationships acquired in connection with business combinations. Charges related to the amortization of these intangibles are recorded within both cost of sales and MG&A in our US GAAP financial statements. Amortization charges are recorded over the estimated useful life of the related acquired intangible asset, and thus are generally recorded over multiple years.

 

We exclude amortization charges for our acquisition-related intangible assets for purposes of calculating certain non-GAAP measures because these charges are inconsistent in size and are significantly impacted by the timing and valuation of our acquisitions. These adjustments facilitate a useful evaluation of our current operating performance and comparison to our past operating performance and provide investors with additional means to evaluate cost and expense trends.

 

Share-based compensation

Share-based compensation consists of charges related to our employee equity incentive plans.

We exclude charges related to share-based compensation for purposes of calculating certain non-GAAP measures because we believe these adjustments provide comparability to peer company results and because these charges are not viewed by management as part of our core operating performance. We believe these adjustments provide investors with a useful view, through the eyes of management, of our core business model, how management currently evaluates core operational performance, and additional means to evaluate expense trends, including in comparison to other peer companies.

 

Restructuring and other charges

Restructuring charges are costs associated with a restructuring plan and are primarily related to employee severance and benefit arrangements. Other charges include periodic goodwill and asset impairments, and costs associated with restructuring activity. Q2 2024 includes a charge arising out of the R2 litigation.

We exclude restructuring and other charges, including any adjustments to charges recorded in prior periods, for purposes of calculating certain non-GAAP measures because these costs do not reflect our core operating performance. These adjustments facilitate a useful evaluation of our core operating performance and comparisons to past operating results and provide investors with additional means to evaluate expense trends.

 

(Gains) losses on equity investments, net

(Gains) losses on equity investments, net consists of ongoing mark-to-market adjustments on marketable equity securities, observable price adjustments on non-marketable equity securities, related impairment charges, and the sale of equity investments and other.

 

We exclude these non-operating gains and losses for purposes of calculating certain non-GAAP measures because it provides comparability between periods. The exclusion reflects how management evaluates the core operations of the business.

 

(Gains) losses from divestiture

(Gains) losses are recognized at the close of a divestiture, or over a specified deferral period when deferred consideration is received at the time of closing. Based on our ongoing obligation under the NAND wafer manufacturing and sale agreement entered into in connection with the first closing of the sale of our NAND memory business on December 29, 2021, a portion of the initial closing consideration was deferred and will be recognized between first and second closing.

 

We exclude gains or losses resulting from divestitures for purposes of calculating certain non-GAAP measures because they do not reflect our current operating performance. These adjustments facilitate a useful evaluation of our current operating performance and comparisons to past operating results.

Adjusted free cash flow

We reference a non-GAAP financial measure of adjusted free cash flow, which is used by management when assessing our sources of liquidity, capital resources, and quality of earnings. Adjusted free cash flow is operating cash flow adjusted for (1) additions to property, plant, and equipment, net of proceeds from capital-related government incentives and partner contributions, and (2) payments on finance leases.

 

This non-GAAP financial measure is helpful in understanding our capital requirements and sources of liquidity by providing an additional means to evaluate the cash flow trends of our business.

Net capital spending

We reference a non-GAAP financial measure of net capital spending, which is additions to property, plant, and equipment, net of proceeds from capital-related government incentives and partner contributions.

We believe this measure provides investors with useful supplemental information about our capital investment activities and capital offsets, and allows for greater transparency with respect to a key metric used by management in operating our business and measuring our performance.

Until recently, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was a virtual unknown outside of the Midwest, even among Democrats. But his stock rose fast in the days after President Biden withdrew from the race, clearing a path for Ms. Harris to replace him and pick Mr. Walz as her No. 2.

Here’s a closer look at the Democrats’ new choice for vice president.

1. He is a (very recent) social media darling . Mr. Walz has enjoyed a groundswell of support online from users commenting on his Midwestern “dad vibes” and appealing ordinariness.

2. He started the whole “weird” thing. It was Mr. Walz who labeled former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, “weird” on cable television just a couple of weeks ago. The description soon became a Democratic talking point.

3. He named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. “I think we can lay to rest that this is the coolest bill signing we’ll ever do,” he said as he put his name on legislation declaring a stretch of Highway 5 the “Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway” after the musician who had lived in Minnesota.

I see many professionals who feel overwhelmed by uncertainty in the job market or frustrated by a lack of career advancement opportunities. Some seek a better work-life balance or higher job satisfaction. Many people want to discover purpose through a meaningful career that fits their passions and contributes to the greater good.

I think this all underscores the importance of having a solid career plan to help you stay focused on your goals and passions. Let’s dive into seven steps you can take to successfully plan your career, discover your strengths and work toward becoming your best self.

1. Self-Assessment

First, you want to understand your skills, interests, values and personality. Knowing yourself more deeply allows you to make informed career choices that truly resonate with who you are. Start by taking personality tests, reflecting on your experiences and identifying what excites you. For example, think about a project you enjoyed; what skills did you use? What aspects did you find most rewarding?

To get started, I recommend personality identification tools like Myers-Briggs, CliftonStrengths or 16Personalities. Reflect on your results and consider how they align with your current or desired career path. And, see if you are learning something new about yourself.

2. Research And Exploration

Now that you have a clearer understanding of yourself, it’s time to explore potential career paths. Use online resources, attend industry events and network with professionals in fields of interest to open your eyes to possibilities you might not have considered. I especially find that informational interviews—talking to people who are already in a role you’re curious about—can provide invaluable insights.

Websites like LinkedIn and Glassdoor are great for researching different careers and companies. To find industry events, you can use platforms like Eventbrite or Meetup. Lastly, LinkedIn is also a great tool to connect with professionals and request interviews to learn more about potential careers.

3. Set Goals

Setting both short-term and long-term goals gives you a road map to follow, ensuring progress and purpose. Define what you want to achieve in the next six months, year and five years. Make these goals SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. For example, if you want to change industries, a short-term goal could be to finish a relevant certification in six months.

Use goal-setting apps like Monday and Trello or even outline your goals with a simple Google Doc. Break down your long-term goals into smaller, manageable tasks and set deadlines for each. Regularly review and adjust your goals as needed.

4. Create An Action Plan

Turn your goals into tangible tasks you can tackle daily or weekly. List out the steps needed to achieve each goal, set deadlines and prioritize tasks. If your goal is to land a new job, your action plan might include updating your resume, applying to five jobs per week and networking with at least three new contacts each month.

Tools like Todoist or Notion can help you create detailed action plans. Prioritize your tasks and set reminders to stay on track. Use job search engines like Indeed or LinkedIn Jobs to find relevant job postings and track your applications.

5. Develop Skills And Gain Experience

As already hinted at, continuous learning is key to staying competitive and achieving your career goals. Focus on skills and experiences that can increase your value and open doors to new opportunities. This could include technical skills, soft skills or industry-specific knowledge.

You can also enroll in courses, attend workshops or seek out volunteer opportunities to build these skills. If you want to be a leader, you can take a leadership development course and volunteer to lead a project at work.

Websites like Coursera, Udemy and LinkedIn Learning offer a wide range of accessible courses to help develop skills. You can also look for volunteer opportunities on platforms like VolunteerMatch or Idealist to gain practical experience.

6. Evaluate And Adjust

Regularly reviewing your progress and making necessary adjustments is crucial to staying on track. Life changes, and so do your goals and circumstances.

Set aside time every few months to reflect on your progress. Are you hitting your milestones? Are your goals still relevant? If not, don’t be afraid to pivot. If you find a new interest that excites you more than your current path, adjust your plan to include this new direction.

Set up calendar reminders to schedule quarterly reviews for yourself. Reflect on your progress using tools like a journal or a reflective app like Day One. Adjust your goals and action plan based on your findings.

7. Stay Motivated And Seek Support

Career planning is a journey, and I know how challenging it can be to stay motivated. Seek support from a network of supporters for encouragement, advice and new perspectives. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, and surround yourself with positive influences.

Consider joining professional associations related to your field, and use some of the platforms already mentioned to find mentors and join relevant groups. This network can help you celebrate your milestones and stay motivated.

Career planning involves steps like self-assessment, research and an action plan. By building a network and actively developing skills, you can start a successful career that matches your talents and interests.

Don’t be discouraged if progress seems slow; every bit of effort counts. Keep moving forward, and remember how each step helps bring you closer to your ideal career.
