Scientific/Academic Conference Poster Presentation

Digital research poster presentations, slidemodel poster presentation templates, how to make a research poster presentation step-by-step, considerations for printing poster presentations, how to present a research poster presentation, final words, what is a research poster .

Research posters are visual overviews of the most relevant information extracted from a research paper or analysis.   They are essential communication formats for sharing findings with peers and interested people in the field. Research posters can also effectively present material for other areas besides the sciences and STEM—for example, business and law.

You’ll be creating research posters regularly as an academic researcher, scientist, or grad student. You’ll have to present them at numerous functions and events. For example:

  • Conference presentations
  • Informational events
  • Community centers

The research poster presentation is a comprehensive way to share data, information, and research results. Before the pandemic, the majority of research events were in person. During lockdown and beyond, virtual conferences and summits became the norm. Many researchers now create poster presentations that work in printed and digital formats.

Examples of research posters using SlideModel's templates

Let’s look at why it’s crucial to spend time creating poster presentations for your research projects, research, analysis, and study papers.

Summary of why are poster presentations important

Research posters represent you and your sponsor’s research

Research papers and accompanying poster presentations are potent tools for representation and communication in your field of study. Well-performing poster presentations help scientists, researchers, and analysts grow their careers through grants and sponsorships.

When presenting a poster presentation for a sponsored research project, you’re representing the company that sponsored you. Your professionalism, demeanor, and capacity for creating impactful poster presentations call attention to other interested sponsors, spreading your impact in the field.

Research posters demonstrate expertise and growth

Presenting research posters at conferences, summits, and graduate grading events shows your expertise and knowledge in your field of study. The way your poster presentation looks and delivers, plus your performance while presenting the work, is judged by your viewers regardless of whether it’s an officially judged panel.

Recurring visitors to research conferences and symposia will see you and your poster presentations evolve. Improve your impact by creating a great poster presentation every time by paying attention to detail in the poster design and in your oral presentation. Practice your public speaking skills alongside the design techniques for even more impact.

Poster presentations create and maintain collaborations

Every time you participate in a research poster conference, you create meaningful connections with people in your field, industry or community. Not only do research posters showcase information about current data in different areas, but they also bring people together with similar interests. Countless collaboration projects between different research teams started after discussing poster details during coffee breaks.

An effective research poster template deepens your peer’s understanding of a topic by highlighting research, data, and conclusions. This information can help other researchers and analysts with their work. As a research poster presenter, you’re given the opportunity for both teaching and learning while sharing ideas with peers and colleagues.

Anatomy of a Winning Poster Presentation

Do you want your research poster to perform well?  Following the standard layout and adding a few personal touches will help attendees know how to read your poster and get the most out of your information.

The anatomy of a winning poster

The overall size of your research poster ultimately depends on the dimensions of the provided space at the conference or research poster gallery. The poster orientation can be horizontal or vertical, with horizontal being the most common.  In general, research posters measure 48 x 36 inches or are an A0 paper size.

A virtual poster can be the same proportions as the printed research poster, but you have more leeway regarding the dimensions. Virtual research posters should fit on a screen with no need to scroll, with 1080p resolution as a standard these days. A horizontal presentation size is ideal for that.

A research poster presentation has a standard layout of 2–5 columns with 2–3 sections each. Typical structures say to separate the content into four sections; 1. A horizontal header 2. Introduction column, 3. Research/Work/Data column, and 4. Conclusion column. Each unit includes topics that relate to your poster’s objective.  Here’s a generalized outline for a poster presentation:

  • Condensed Abstract
  • Objectives/Purpose
  • Methodology
  • Recommendations
  • Implications
  • Acknowledgments
  • Contact Information

The overview content you include in the units depends on your poster presentations’ theme, topic, industry, or field of research. A scientific or academic poster will include sections like hypothesis, methodology, and materials. A marketing analysis poster will include performance metrics and competitor analysis results.

There’s no way a poster can hold all the information included in your research paper or analysis report. The poster is an overview that invites the audience to want to find out more. That’s where supplement material comes in. Create a printed PDF handout or card with a QR code (created using a QR code generator ). Send the audience to the best online location for reading or downloading the complete paper.

What Makes a Poster Presentation Good and Effective?

For your poster presentation to be effective and well-received, it needs to cover all the bases and be inviting to find out more. Stick to the standard layout suggestions and give it a unique look and feel. We’ve put together some of the most critical research poster-creation tips in the list below. Your poster presentation will perform as long as you check all the boxes.

The information you choose to include in the sections of your poster presentation needs to be cohesive. Train your editing eye and do a few revisions before presenting. The best way to look at it is to think of The Big Picture. Don’t get stuck on the details; your attendees won’t always know the background behind your research topic or why it’s important.

Be cohesive in how you word the titles, the length of the sections, the highlighting of the most important data, and how your oral presentation complements the printed—or virtual—poster.

The most important characteristic of your poster presentation is its readability and clarity. You need a poster presentation with a balanced design that’s easy to read at a distance of 1.5 meters or 4 feet. The font size and spacing must be clear and neat. All the content must suggest a visual flow for the viewer to follow.

That said, you don’t need to be a designer to add something special to your poster presentation. Once you have the standard—and recognized—columns and sections, add your special touch. These can be anything from colorful boxes for the section titles to an interesting but subtle background, images that catch the eye, and charts that inspire a more extended look.

Storytelling is a presenting technique involving writing techniques to make information flow. Firstly, storytelling helps give your poster presentation a great introduction and an impactful conclusion.

Think of storytelling as the invitation to listen or read more, as the glue that connects sections, making them flow from one to another. Storytelling is using stories in the oral presentation, for example, what your lab partner said when you discovered something interesting. If it makes your audience smile and nod, you’ve hit the mark. Storytelling is like giving a research presentation a dose of your personality, and it can help turning your data into opening stories .

Design Tips For Creating an Effective Research Poster Presentation

The section above briefly mentioned how important design is to your poster presentation’s effectiveness. We’ll look deeper into what you need to know when designing a poster presentation.

1. Font Characteristics

The typeface and size you choose are of great importance. Not only does the text need to be readable from two meters away, but it also needs to look and sit well on the poster. Stay away from calligraphic script typefaces, novelty typefaces, or typefaces with uniquely shaped letters.

Stick to the classics like a sans serif Helvetica, Lato, Open Sans, or Verdana. Avoid serif typefaces as they can be difficult to read from far away. Here are some standard text sizes to have on hand.

  • Title: 85 pt
  • Authors: 65 pt
  • Headings: 36 pt
  • Body Text: 24 pt
  • Captions: 18 pt

Resume of font characteristics a winning poster presentation must follow

If you feel too prone to use serif typefaces, work with a font pairing tool that helps you find a suitable solution – and intend those serif fonts for heading sections only. As a rule, never use more than 3 different typefaces in your design. To make it more dynamic, you can work with the same font using light, bold, and italic weights to put emphasis on the required areas.

2. Color Pairing

Using colors in your poster presentation design is a great way to grab the viewer’s attention. A color’s purpose is to help the viewer follow the data flow in your presentation, not distract. Don’t let the color take more importance than the information on your poster.

Effective color pairing tactics for poster presentations

Choose one main color for the title and headlines and a similar color for the data visualizations. If you want to use more than one color, don’t create too much contrast between them. Try different tonalities of the same color and keep things balanced visually. Your color palette should have at most one main color and two accent colors.

Black text over a white background is standard practice for printed poster presentations, but for virtual presentations, try a very light gray instead of white and a very dark gray instead of black. Additionally, use variations of light color backgrounds and dark color text. Make sure it’s easy to read from two meters away or on a screen, depending on the context. We recommend ditching full white or full black tone usage as it hurts eyesight in the long term due to its intense contrast difference with the light ambiance.

3. Data Visualization Dimensions

Just like the text, your charts, graphs, and data visualizations must be easy to read and understand. Generally, if a person is interested in your research and has already read some of the text from two meters away, they’ll come closer to look at the charts and graphs.

Tips for properly arranging data visualization dimensions in poster presentations

Fit data visualizations inside columns or let them span over two columns. Remove any unnecessary borders, lines, or labels to make them easier to read at a glance. Use a flat design without shadows or 3D characteristics. The text in legends and captions should stay within the chart size and not overflow into the margins. Use a unified text size of 18px for all your data visualizations.

4. Alignment, Margins, and White Space

Finally, the last design tip for creating an impressive and memorable poster presentation is to be mindful of the layout’s alignment, margins, and white space. Create text boxes to help keep everything aligned. They allow you to resize, adapt, and align the content along a margin or grid.

Take advantage of the white space created by borders and margins between sections. Don’t crowd them with a busy background or unattractive color.

Tips on alignment, margins, and white space in poster presentation design

Calculate margins considering a print format. It is a good practice in case the poster presentation ends up becoming in physical format, as you won’t need to downscale your entire design (affecting text readability in the process) to preserve information.

There are different tools that you can use to make a poster presentation. Presenters who are familiar with Microsoft Office prefer to use PowerPoint. You can learn how to make a poster in PowerPoint here.

Poster Presentation Examples

Remember these three words when making your research poster presentation: develop, design, and present. These are the three main actions toward a successful poster presentation.

Summary of how to make a research poster presentation

The section below will take you on a step-by-step journey to create your next poster presentation.

Step 1: Define the purpose and audience of your poster presentation

Before making a poster presentation design, you’ll need to plan first. Here are some questions to answer at this point:

  • Are they in your field?
  • Do they know about your research topic?
  • What can they get from your research?
  • Will you print it?
  • Is it for a virtual conference?

Step 2: Make an outline

With a clear purpose and strategy, it’s time to collect the most important information from your research paper, analysis, or documentation. Make a content dump and then select the most interesting information. Use the content to draft an outline.

Outlines help formulate the overall structure better than going straight into designing the poster. Mimic the standard poster structure in your outline using section headlines as separators. Go further and separate the content into the columns they’ll be placed in.

Step 3: Write the content

Write or rewrite the content for the sections in your poster presentation. Use the text in your research paper as a base, but summarize it to be more succinct in what you share.

Don’t forget to write a catchy title that presents the problem and your findings in a clear way. Likewise, craft the headlines for the sections in a similar tone as the title, creating consistency in the message. Include subtle transitions between sections to help follow the flow of information in order.

Avoid copying/pasting entire sections of the research paper on which the poster is based. Opt for the storytelling approach, so the delivered message results are interesting for your audience.

Step 4: Put it all together visually

This entire guide on how to design a research poster presentation is the perfect resource to help you with this step. Follow all the tips and guidelines and have an unforgettable poster presentation.

Moving on, here’s how to design a research poster presentation with PowerPoint Templates . Open a new project and size it to the standard 48 x 36 inches. Using the outline, map out the sections on the empty canvas. Add a text box for each title, headline, and body text. Piece by piece, add the content into their corresponding text box.

Basic structure layout of an academic poster presentation

Transform the text information visually, make bullet points, and place the content in tables and timelines. Make your text visual to avoid chunky text blocks that no one will have time to read. Make sure all text sizes are coherent for all headings, body texts, image captions, etc. Double-check for spacing and text box formatting.

Next, add or create data visualizations, images, or diagrams. Align everything into columns and sections, making sure there’s no overflow. Add captions and legends to the visualizations, and check the color contrast with colleagues and friends. Ask for feedback and progress to the last step.

Step 5: Last touches

Time to check the final touches on your poster presentation design. Here’s a checklist to help finalize your research poster before sending it to printers or the virtual summit rep.

  • Check the resolution of all visual elements in your poster design. Zoom to 100 or 200% to see if the images pixelate. Avoid this problem by using vector design elements and high-resolution images.
  • Ensure that charts and graphs are easy to read and don’t look crowded.
  • Analyze the visual hierarchy. Is there a visual flow through the title, introduction, data, and conclusion?
  • Take a step back and check if it’s legible from a distance. Is there enough white space for the content to breathe?
  • Does the design look inviting and interesting?

An often neglected topic arises when we need to print our designs for any exhibition purpose. Since A0 is a hard-to-manage format for most printers, these poster presentations result in heftier charges for the user. Instead, you can opt to work your design in two A1 sheets, which also becomes more manageable for transportation. Create seamless borders for the section on which the poster sheets should meet, or work with a white background.

Paper weight options should be over 200 gsm to avoid unwanted damage during the printing process due to heavy ink usage. If possible, laminate your print or stick it to photographic paper – this shall protect your work from spills.

Finally, always run a test print. Gray tints may not be printed as clearly as you see them on screen (this is due to the RGB to CMYK conversion process). Other differences can be appreciated when working with ink jet plotters vs. laser printers. Give yourself enough room to maneuver last-minute design changes.

Presenting a research poster is a big step in the poster presentation cycle. Your poster presentation might or might not be judged by faculty or peers. But knowing what judges look for will help you prepare for the design and oral presentation, regardless of whether you receive a grade for your work or if it’s business related. Likewise, the same principles apply when presenting at an in-person or virtual summit.

The opening statement

Part of presenting a research poster is welcoming the viewer to your small personal area in the sea of poster presentations. You’ll need an opening statement to pitch your research poster and get the viewers’ attention.

Draft a 2 to 3-sentence pitch that covers the most important points:

  • What the research is
  • Why was it conducted
  • What the results say

From that opening statement, you’re ready to continue with the oral presentation for the benefit of your attendees.

The oral presentation

During the oral presentation, share the information on the poster while conversing with the interested public. Practice many times before the event. Structure the oral presentation as conversation points, and use the poster’s visual flow as support. Make eye contact with your audience as you speak, but don’t make them uncomfortable.

Pro Tip: In a conference or summit, if people show up to your poster area after you’ve started presenting it to another group, finish and then address the new visitors.

QA Sessions

When you’ve finished the oral presentation, offer the audience a chance to ask questions. You can tell them before starting the presentation that you’ll be holding a QA session at the end. Doing so will prevent interruptions as you’re speaking.

If presenting to one or two people, be flexible and answer questions as you review all the sections on your poster.

Supplemental Material

If your audience is interested in learning more, you can offer another content type, further imprinting the information in their minds. Some ideas include; printed copies of your research paper, links to a website, a digital experience of your poster, a thesis PDF, or data spreadsheets.

Your audience will want to contact you for further conversations; include contact details in your supplemental material. If you don’t offer anything else, at least have business cards.

Even though conferences have changed, the research poster’s importance hasn’t diminished. Now, instead of simply creating a printed poster presentation, you can also make it for digital platforms. The final output will depend on the conference and its requirements.

This guide covered all the essential information you need to know for creating impactful poster presentations, from design, structure and layout tips to oral presentation techniques to engage your audience better .

Creative Poster Design Tips

1. less is more (most of the time).

“Less is more,” as the cliche goes, and it is often true.

Use a basic background image with a bold font for the creative poster design, or vice versa. When you choose a simple design, you can readily predict where your readers’ attention will be drawn. Do you want them to concentrate on the text or the image?

We suggest you scale up your image and use a bold typeface in the negative space to accentuate the text. Simple posters use minimalist fonts for the most straightforward design. Here are some amazing minimalist creative poster design examples.

2. Design with Type

You may have a lot to say and transmit to your audience, but you must retain their attention for a long enough period of time for them to absorb it all.

This implies that a typographic poster will be needed. This is where you can let your inner designer go and create one-of-a-kind, original creative poster designs.

Experiment with various bright colors and typefaces. Go all in or go home. Go for a thin and bold appearance. It’s all up to you.

If you’re stuck for typefaces and want to stand out, we’ve compiled a list of 30 modern fonts that you should employ in your next project.

3. Use lines to your advantage

You may utilize the rule of thirds to select where to organize and frame your theme in a poster, much like in photography. You can control and guide a reader’s eye anywhere through invisible geometric lines.

Consider this poster animal feed. They have an excellent photo and message combo and employ a line of text to direct you to the image, effectively expressing the concept.

In creative poster design, invisible typographic lines can achieve visual harmony while simultaneously breaking up the design and adding a little flare.

4. Experiment with other forms

Shapes can also be employed to direct and focus the reader’s attention. You may draw attention to your organized chaos using a form-filled backdrop or making shapes with your text.

You have total control when making your own creative poster design.

5. Experiment with proportions

Play around with the measurements to bring your posters to life. Text, background, words, shapes, and other objects may all be piled on top of one another!

Using this creative poster design strategy, you may make your poster as engaging as possible. Make your poster’s most critical elements stand out from the rest of the design. Combining the line method with the 3D technique comes in handy here.

6. Go back in time

Vintage is undeniably fashionable right now. Film photography and vintage apparel are indistinguishable, and your new creative poster design concept is no exception. Vintage offers some classic methods and ideas.

7. Make additional posters

To stand out from the crowd, create a poster that is divided in two. Assume you’re putting together a multi-day event.

Create a collection of posters that complement each other. Cut the poster in half to create two alternative posters with different dates. Let me show you what I mean.

8. Contrast and color combinations

Make your poster stand out by using contrasting colors. Colors that are complementary or diametrically opposing should be used. Use bright colors, a black-and-white combo, or simply black and white!

There are unlimited color combinations to pick from, and none are correct or incorrect. Try out this creative poster design concept to see what works best for your advertising poster.

9. Make the most of negative space

There is an opportunity when there is negative space. As you are surely aware, negative space is an empty zone in an image or design. It is usually a good idea to think about putting text in negative space.

This is due to the lettering being clear and easy to read and the eye being naturally pulled there. We comprehensively explain how to add text to photographs, and the same process can be used to generate creative poster design ideas.

10. Pay more attention to the imagery

You may occasionally make a strong argument without using words. That is why you should periodically concentrate on your design when you are at a loss for words. You can sell your products subtly or overtly.

Idea #2: Maintain consistent page margin width

This poster is a must-have in your design arsenal because of its two features.

Maintain consistent page margin width-creative poster design

The second defining feature is the uniform margin width, which gives it an organized, professional aspect. Your eyes know precisely where to go next as you read one paragraph after the other. Experimenting with different fonts and colors can also help to create a unique and eye-catching design. By playing around with different fonts and colors, you can create something that is both visually appealing and unique.

Idea #9: Divide the poster into parts by using boxes and borders.

There is no hard and fast rule about the amount of content that should be included in your creative poster.

Divide the poster into parts by using boxes and borders-creative poster design

On the other hand, the content of your creative poster design must be easily digested by the reader.

By thoughtfully structuring the information, you can guide the reader’s eyes smoothly across the poster, allowing them to absorb the key points effortlessly.

Balancing captivating visuals and easily digestible content is vital for creating a powerful and memorable poster that effectively communicates your intended.

Idea #10: Allow the poster’s background image to speak for itself.

It’s common for poster backgrounds to become buried in a design. It does not have to and can be the poster’s focus point.

How to Design a Winning Poster Presentation: A Quick Guide

Are you looking to make a lasting impression at your next conference or academic event?  Have you ever been in a situation where you had to present a poster presentation for a conference but didn’t know where to start?  Designing a winning poster presentation design can be daunting, especially when you have limited time and resources. But don’t worry, with a little planning and creativity; you can create a poster presentation that will grab your audience’s attention and effectively communicate your message.

In this blog, we will dive into the world of poster design and provide a quick guide on creating a creative poster presentation design. From choosing the right layout and color scheme to selecting the best images and fonts, we will share examples and templates to help you along the way.

Are you ready to design a poster presentation that will make an impactful impression?

Let’s get started!

What is a poster presentation?

A poster presentation is a great way of communicating research, study findings, concepts, and ideas. It is a visual representation of information used to attract the audience’s attention and explain the topic in an easy-to-understand manner. A poster presentation typically consists of a poster and a brief explanation.

The poster should be designed to be visually appealing and include a compelling title slide that will draw the audience’s attention. The content should be organized logically and include a clear message that differentiates it from other posters.

The text should be concise and written in a large font size to be easily read from a distance. Additionally, the poster should include images, PowerPoint tables , graphs, and other visuals to help illustrate the points made.

The brief explanation should be five minutes long and provide an overview of the poster’s content. The speaker should be friendly and professional and use appropriate language for the audience.

How to make a poster presentation?

Making a poster presentation can be a great way to showcase your research or project, but it can also be a bit overwhelming if you’re unsure where to start. Here are tips for poster presentation that will grab your audience’s attention and effectively communicate your message.

Start with a plan

Before you start designing your poster, it’s essential to have a clear idea of what you wish to achieve. Think about your audience, message, and the key points you want to communicate. Once you have a plan in place, it will be much easier to create a poster presentation PowerPoint that is both visually appealing and informative.

Choose the right layout

The layout of your poster presentation is important as it can affect how easily people can read and understand your information. A good layout with a clear information hierarchy will be easy to read. You can use various fonts, sizes, and colors to emphasize the most important points.

Use images and graphics

A poster presentation full of text can be overwhelming, so it’s important to include images and PowerPoint graphics to break up the text and make it more visually appealing. Make sure to choose relevant images for your topic, which will help to communicate your message.

design presentation poster ideas

Use contrasting colors

Choosing the right color scheme is essential for ensuring your poster presentation design is easy to read and engage. Use contrasting colors for the background and text, and ensure that the text is easy to read against the background.

Proofread and edit

Once you’ve finished designing your creative poster presentation, it’s vital to proofread and edit it to ensure there are no mistakes or typos. It’s also a good idea to get feedback from others to see if any changes or improvements can be made.

Creating a creative poster presentation takes a bit of planning, creativity, and attention to detail, but by following these tips, you can design a poster that will engage your audience and effectively communicate your message. Remember, a poster presentation PPT is not just a collection of text and images; it’s a visual tool to communicate your ideas and research.

Tips for Poster Presentation

Creating an appealing poster presentation perfectly captures your audience’s attention and effectively communicates your message. Here are five tips to help you create an effective PowerPoint poster presentation:

Keep it simple

Your poster should be easy to read and understand. Avoid using too many colors or borders, as this can be distracting and look untidy. Use a limited color palette and keep the text concise.

Choose an eye-catching headline

Think of some eye catchy or witty text as your poster’s focal point to grab people’s attention. They will want to look closer if it makes them laugh or piques their curiosity.

Use high-quality photos

You can use pictures to design posters, and choosing high-resolution photos is essential, especially if you print them in large pixels or sizes. Any pixelation or slightly blurred graphics can turn your design into a disaster.

Introduce your poster presentation with a “1 Minute Pitch.”

You don’t want to “give everything away,” so to speak, but rather capture the interest of your audience, introduce yourself and the project, and spark a dialogue.

Add a memorable call to action

Your poster will only be meaningful if it makes the audience act on the message you delivered. Compose a clear call to action to inform them of what to do next. You can add details on where to purchase tickets for event posters in your call to action.

By following these tips, you can create a compelling and creative poster presentation design that will capture your audience’s attention and effectively communicate your message.

Poster Presentation Examples

When creating a creative poster presentation, seeing examples can be a great way to get inspiration and see what works. In this section, we will be showcasing a variety of poster presentation examples that demonstrate different design techniques and styles.

From scientific research posters to creative projects, these examples will give you a better understanding of how to create a poster that will grab your audience’s attention and effectively communicate your message.

Wrapping It Up

Creating a creative poster presentation requires careful planning and attention to detail. It is essential to identify the poster’s goal, consider the target audience, decide where to share it, use a pre-made PowerPoint template , pick a relevant or branded color scheme, include a clear call-to-action, and use fonts to create a hierarchy of information.

Additionally, ensuring the poster has an attractive visual impact, a compelling title, a clear message, cohesiveness, design and readability, storytelling, alignment, margins, and white space is essential. By following these tips, you have access to various ideas for poster presentations that will have a lasting impact.

Movies are a completely different matter. If there’s an industry that can’t go without promotional posters, it’s the movie industry. The four-step formula of attention, interest, desire, and action is the core foundation of a successful movie advertising campaign and posters are a huge part of it. There are different techniques designers for movie posters achieve that: through showing without telling; through appeal relying on famous actors; with consistent style or recognizability.  here we collected alternative posters for famous movies made by creative designers from all over the web.

In this section, we will look at some propaganda-style posters for famous movies with fitting plots, and other campaigns.

5 Tips for Designing a Poster In PowerPoint

If you’re challenged with designing a poster without having to use image-editing software, you can use PowerPoint to take-on the challenge. Start by following these simple tips.

1. Use Vertical PowerPoint Templates

While you can easily create your own design from scratch using PowerPoint tools, it’s much easier to design a PowerPoint poster layout if you have a great template to work with.

Visage Print Template

So consider getting a great PowerPoint template before you get started. In fact, look for a PowerPoint template with a vertical design. This will make the entire process of rearranging content blocks and formatting much easier for you.

2. Take Advantage of Master Layouts

When using high-quality PowerPoint templates, you’ll also find master slide layouts that are included with the template. These layouts allow you to easily create new slides using pre-designed content layouts. Use these master layouts to experiment with different content designs for your poster.

3. Use Custom Fonts for Better Impact

Halogue - Creative Powerpoint Presentation

Fonts play a key role in poster design. It’s the main element of a poster design that attracts attention. So pick a great poster font and customize the titles to make your poster look more professional.

4. Choose Colors Carefully

Solar System Education Presentation

PowerPoint is designed to work as a slideshow presentation software. So the colors, backgrounds, and gradients you use in your poster design may not convert as accurately when you print out the poster.

Consider using print-friendly colors in your poster design and also do a test print to see if your finalized poster comes out looking as well as it looks on the computer.

5. Know Your Limits

Keep in mind that PowerPoint is not an image editing software. Don’t expect it to function just like Photoshop. PowerPoint has very limited features when it comes to designing posters. Use it to design simple and quick posters. But try not to use it for professional and business designs.

Here’s an infographic summarizing the standard poster sizes used by printing companies worldwide. Keep reading for a brief explanation about each poster size.

design presentation poster ideas

  • A4 Paper: 8.5” x 11” (21 x 29.7 cm). These posters are ideal for printing at home or at your local printing shop for personal use or for sticking on your shop window.
  • Small Poster: 11” x 17” (28 x 43 cm). These posters are normally used as flyers or for sticking on street lights and bulletin boards. You can also use these posters for decorating offices, as they don’t take up a lot of space.
  • Medium Poster: 18” x 24” (46 x 61 cm). These posters are mostly used in places like clinics, offices, shop windows and university walls. They can hold more information than small posters, but you should still keep the text minimal.
  • Large Poster: 24” x 36” (61 x 91 cm). These posters are used by organizations for advertising businesses, films, events, fundraisers and promotions. You can usually find these posters outside malls, events and clubs.

The poster size that’s best for you will depend on your poster’s purpose and how you plan to use it. Make sure you ask your printer about the sizes and formats before designing one.

Now, let’s get to the fun part: creating a poster!

Follow this poster making tutorial in order or jump ahead to a section of your interest.

Step #1: Identify the Purpose of Your Poster

Step #2: choose a poster template, step #3: add in your text content, step #4: add photos and graphics, step #5: customize colors and fonts, step #6: include a call-to-action, step #7: share and download your poster.

The first step of making a poster is to identify its purpose.

Answer the following questions before moving on to poster design:

  • What’s the goal of your poster?
  • Who is the audience?
  • Where do you plan to share your poster?

Addressing these questions will help you determine the right poster size, draft appropriate poster content and find the right poster template.

For example, if you’re designing a poster to advertise an event, you need to understand what you want your audience to do after they see it.

Do you want them to register online? Do you want them to go to a physical place to buy tickets? Do you want them to scan a QR code ?

Knowing this will help you pick a poster size that fits in all the important information without looking cluttered or difficult to read.

If your audience is female students, for example, you’d want to start with a poster template with colors and a design style that appeals to them.

This leads us to the next step.

Once you’ve identified the purpose and audience of your poster, it’s time to choose a template that best fits your needs.

The first thing you need to do is log in to your Visme account. If you don’t already have an account, you can create one for free here .

Inside your dashboard, click on Create New . In the drop down menu, select Project then Printables .

This will open up the templates library. Click on Posters to browse through the various options and designs that appear below. When you find a poster template you like, hover on it and click on Edit to open it in the Visme editor and start customizing it.

Alternatively, you can also search for relevant templates by typing in a keyword in the search bar at the top, such as “university poster” or “art poster.”

You can also browse through other template categories, such as flyers and social graphics, to find a design you like and customize the dimensions.

If you don’t want to move forward with a pre-designed template, you can also start from scratch by clicking on Custom Size at the right side of the screen. Then, simply add in your size requirements to open a blank canvas in the editor.

If you don’t want to move forward with a pre-designed template, you can also start from scratch by clicking on Create from Blank at the left side of the screen, above Generate with AI. Then, input content boxes, design elements and images.

And if you’re short on time, another option for creating your poster is to use the Visme AI Poster Generator . This AI-powered tool can design a visual poster from a single text prompt. In the template library, click on Generate with AI and a chatbot will open. Write your prompt in the text box, select one of the suggested styles and let AI do its magic.

Now, it’s time to customize your poster.

The first thing you need to edit in your poster template is the text.

Visme has realistic placeholder content written by professionals in almost all of the templates, and you can use it to inspire your own content.

For example, this minimal template already has a title and subtitle. You can replace this text with your own, and even add more text boxes.

how to make a poster - Add in Your Text Content

If you’ve already written the content for your poster separately, you should add it to your poster in this step.

Double-click on any text box to edit it, and copy and paste your content. To add more text, click on the Header & Text in the left sidebar to choose from pre-designed text blocks.

Make sure you use separate text boxes for different parts of your content so you can move them around and so your content doesn’t end up looking like one big block of text.

Don’t forget to add details like event timing, contact information, location and more depending on the nature and purpose of your poster.

A part of the poster-making process is ensuring that the text is not too long or has any grammar mistakes. If you need some help, use the AI Writer to help you finesse your poster text by editing and proofreading it. Additionally, craft headlines that really grab the attention of your audience.

Once you have all your text content in place, it’s time to add some visuals.

This is the fun part! Make your poster speak volumes with eye-catching visuals.

Whether it’s a meaningful photograph, an illustration that sets the mood, an AI generated graphic, or bright and colorful icons that balance out the text — visuals can bring your poster to life.

In Visme, you have several options to add photos and graphics to your poster design:

  • Browse millions of free stock photos in the built-in image library. Search for relevant keywords and scroll to look for options. When you find an image you like, drag and drop it onto your poster.
  • Upload your own images by clicking on Photos and then on Upload. Your images will be saved in your Content library.
  • Use the AI Edit Tools that help you unblur and upscale legacy photos, and remove pesky backgrounds or unwanted objects from photos.
  • Generate unique, branded images and graphics with Visme AI Image Generator . Choose from the suggested output styles: photos, illustrations, paintings, and more.
  • Add free vector icons, illustrations, shapes and more by browsing through the graphics library inside the editor.

Regardless of how you add visuals into your poster, you can edit them using Visme’s photo editor .

Resize your photos and graphics, crop them into shapes, apply filters, color overlays and borders, tweak the opacity settings and more.

When you’re happy with the text and visual content of your poster, it’s time to adjust the design style to pull everything together.

Great, your poster is almost ready.

All you need to do now is adjust the colors and fonts in the template so they are aligned with your brand style, theme, topic or vision.

If you have set design guidelines to stick to, you can easily set up your Brand Kit in Visme — upload your logo, color palette and fonts to use in your poster and any other Visme design project.

If you’re designing a poster for personal purposes, or if you don’t have any brand guidelines in place, you can always choose from the preset color themes that come built-in with the editor.

Simply click through the themes to change the entire color scheme of the poster in one go. Pick the color theme that works best with your poster topic, mood and visuals.

You can also use the color picker tool to adjust the colors of the background and each individual object.

The next thing to pay attention to are your fonts. Make sure you keep font pairing best practices in mind when designing your poster.

how to make a poster - a GIF of choosing fonts in Visme editor

You don’t want to use a font style that clashes with your poster idea. Also, you want the font to be clear and easy-to-read, depending on where you plan to use the poster.

Woah — you’re almost done with your poster design! This takes us to the last step, adding a call-to-action. This ensures your poster is as effective as it’s good-looking.

For business and advertising purposes, adding a call-to-action (CTA) to your poster is one of the most crucial parts of poster design.

Before adding a CTA, go back to the first step and think about the goals and purpose of your poster. What do you want your audience to do when they see it?

Do you want them to register for an event, buy tickets for a movie, or visit your website or store in person? Whatever it is, articulate it into concise and compelling copy, and place the CTA where it’s prominent and doesn’t interfere with the design.

how to make a poster - a screenshot of CTA block in Visme

That’s it! You’re done with your poster design. When you’re happy with the result, it’s time to get your poster ready for printing or publish it online and share it with the world.

Finally, with Visme, you can share or download your poster in multiple formats, including high-quality JPG, PNG, PDF, HTML5 or social media posts.

The format you choose will depend on your printing and distributing needs. It’s better to ask your printer what format they prefer to use. They will typically accept a PDF file, which you can download from Visme with or without bleed marks.

If you’re planning to share your poster digitally, you can also download it as an HTML5 file (offline web), or share it via a live URL or embed code.

Additionally, when you share your poster as a live link , you have the ability to track its performance thanks to Visme's analytics dashboard . View data about who opened the file, saw the poster, from where, for how long and more.

And finally, from inside the Visme editor, you can also share your poster as a social media post. Use the integrated content calendar to schedule your poster design for your favorite social media platform.

If you’re working on a digital poster rather than a printed one, we’ve got great news for you — Visme lets you make your posters animated and interactive!

Other than photos, you can also add audio clips, video clips, animated backgrounds, animated illustrations and characters, animated icons, special effects and more from the built-in library.

You can also enable hover effects and pop ups on click, and add links into your poster to make it interactive.

For example, if you’ve added a CTA to register for an event in your digital poster, you can link it to your registration page to direct the viewer!

Furthermore, you can include a form on your poster, turning it into lead generation content . Use Visme Forms to create branded sign up forms you can then embed on posters; as well as websites, newsletters and more.

It’s easy to share your animated or interactive poster in Visme by generating an embed code and adding it to a web page or sharing it via a public or private URL.

Now that you know how to create a poster in Visme, let’s look at some beautiful poster templates to give you a head start.

30 creative poster design ideas that will get you noticed

Whether you need a vehicle to get people excited about a new film, a buzzworthy product, or your next event, the best way to do it? Posters. The best poster design ideas will draw attention and stick in people’s minds.

Posters are great because they work across-the-board; it doesn’t matter who you are, what you do or what you’re promoting, a poster is an effective and visually impactful way to get the word out and get your audience excited about what’s coming.

But not all posters are created equal. An effective poster design for the next big indie film is going to look different from a poster advertising a music festival. And a poster for a company that wants to leave a cool and hip impression must be vastly different from a more traditional and serious brand.

You get the picture.

We’ve pulled together some of the best poster design ideas we’ve seen across genres to get you excited and inspired about what’s possible for you and your poster design.

How the right poster can boost your business

Before we dive into examples of some amazing posters sure to deliver a boost of inspiration to you and your business, let’s talk about why posters—the right posters—are so effective.

Poster design by Stanojevic via 99designs by Vista.

Poster design is about more than designing a pretty piece of paper to slap on the side of a building. When you have the right poster design, it can actually do a lot to boost your company or organization and communicate your brand message.

Great, on-brand poster design builds authority and drives interest: the right poster will connect with your target audience and peak their interest in your product, event, or whatever else you’re performing. And when you choose design elements that feel uniquely you, it will strengthen your brand message and recognition with your audience.

Not too shabby for a 24×36 piece of paper.

A little poster design inspiration to get your creative juices flowing

So now that you know posters are one of the most impactful ways to connect with your audience, let’s take a look at some posters done right to get those creative juices flowing, shall we?

Minimalist posters

Sometimes, less is more. Posters that take a minimalist approach to design can convey everything you want to say about your brand, event, or product with just a few impactful design elements. Whether you go with minimalist graphics or make use of whitespace, taking the less-is-more approach shows your audience you don’t need a lot of big, flashy design elements to get things done.

This style of poster is a great choice for promoting a film, a new apparel line, or appealing to a more “cool and hip” crowd (the key to being cool is to never look like you’re trying too hard).

Typographic posters

Sometimes, a poster has a lot of information it’s got to convey—and in that case, the focus needs to be on the typography.

This type of poster is a great option for when you’ve got a lot of information to deliver to your audience, like when you’re promoting an event and need to get across the date, time, location, and all that fun stuff. Or when you’re trying to deliver key messaging (like your company values or mission statement) in a visually impactful way.

Graphic posters

On the flip side, sometimes the best approach to creating an impactful poster is keeping text to a minimum and focussing on the graphics.

Graphic posters are a great alternative option for promoting a film, event, or product—instead of overwhelming your audience with text, you let them interpret the graphic however they’d like (which can go a long way in building intrigue and peaking interest).

Colorful posters

So, like we said, sometimes less is more… but sometimes more is more, and that can definitely be true with color.

Using a lot of color in your poster design makes a bold statement. It captures people’s attention and, depending on the colors you choose, can help strengthen your brand messaging ( color psychology is a powerful thing).

There’s no one industry or type of business that would benefit more from using color than others; the point is, you have to be strategic with the colors you choose. If you’re a children’s company, using bright, primary colors is a solid choice. If you’re trying to promote your new smoothie line, use colors that ignite the senses and make someone crave a beverage. If you’re trying to get people excited about a concert, use vibrant colors to get their energy up.

The point is, use color in a way that helps you achieve whatever goal you’re trying to hit with your poster, whether that’s to drive people to an event or sell more product.

Photo-centric posters

Like the old saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Sometimes, a photograph can capture something that text, graphics, and illustrations can’t, whether that’s human emotion, a sense of place, the grandness of nature, or a sense of realism.

There’s never a bad time to use a photo in a poster—if you have something that really captures the essence of what you’re trying to communicate in your poster, go for it.

Vintage is definitely having a moment. From vintage clothes to retro decor, it seems like throwback style is everywhere these days—and that includes poster design.

If your company has a more vintage feel—or if you just want to create a nostalgic connection with your audience—try incorporating throwback elements in your poster design.

How To Make A Poster , How To Make A Poster Online

When did you last see a creative poster design that instantly impressed you?

It probably left you remarking, “ Woah, how good is that !” Perhaps, you happened to ask yourself a few questions, too:

“ Who’s the artist behind this poster? ”

“ Where did they get the poster design idea or inspiration from? ”

And, probably this, too: “ How much work went into creating this masterpiece? ”

From this article, you will learn the nitty-gritty of designing a creative poster using a free online poster maker . It can be a movie poster, an infomercial poster, a corporate, or a digital poster.

Posters have historically been a tool for calls to action. They have also been a symbol of celebration of important events, festivals, and more.

For example, the “I Want You” poster is one of the iconic images in American history. Designed by renowned illustrator James Montgomery Flagg, the US Army used it to recruit soldiers during World War I, with as many as four million copies being printed between 1917 and 1918 alone.

Along with the caption, the image of Uncle Sam gesturing his finger at the viewers urging them to join the war effort, makes the poster stand out.

Armin Hofmann's “ Die Gute Form (Good Form) ” is another poster of such enormity. It emerged after WWII and became known as the international typographic style. It used Sans Serif typefaces (particularly Helvetica) and, along with monochrome photography, was perfect for a prominent yet clear style of communication.

Whether you’re a business launching a new product or an individual advertising your online business , posters are an essential tool.

Posters generally work well across the board. Who you are, what you do, and what you’re promoting, do not really matter. A poster's job is to create a visual impact on the viewer and provide them with enough information to drive the desired action.

No two posters are the same either. A poster design for a star wars movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio will be different from one that announces a music festival.

Picmaker's templates are free and ready to use

A well-designed poster boosts a brand’s image. Conversely, a shoddy design could hamper a brand's reputation. An on-brand creative poster establishes authority, drives interest, and connects with the target audience.

Poster types infographic

Posters come in different types: advertisement, travel, informative, motivational, and more.

Advertisement posters

Brands use this type of poster to promote their product and service offerings. Advertisement posters are, however, also used to campaign for a social cause or movement.

Ad posters are designed to elicit emotion and persuade viewers to take action. It might include: completing a purchase, making a donation , filling out questionnaires, et cetera.

Poster Template

This is an advertisement poster from a fashion retailer announcing a summer flash sale. The poster copy includes terms such as “special”, “flash sale” and “offer”, instilling a sense of urgency in shoppers.

Motivational posters

These are one-page posters designed to inspire and motivate an audience.

The poster copy includes motivational quotes or a thought-provoking caption presented in bold typography. The copy overlays the background with a scenic image or a picture of an inspirational figure.

Motivational posters are designed to inspire people and remind them of their potential.

Poster Template

This is a minimalist motivational poster with the caption “ Good things take time .” The caption overlays a scenic background that is immersive and reminds viewers of the journey to the top of the mountain.

Informative posters

Informative posters are designed to inform the audience about a particular subject or trend. They feature simple facts presented in an attractive manner.

Viewers typically spend more time consuming the information on an informative poster - because of its educational nature - compared to others.

Poster Template

This is an informative poster. It displays the fact that 75 percent of planet Earth is water, a fast-depleting natural source. The poster promotes an event about water conservation. Its call-to-action is concise, clear, and encourages people to attend the event.

Promotional posters

These are movie and fashion posters that promote an upcoming film or a fashion event.

A movie poster mentions the release date and shows the main protagonist(s) starring in an upcoming flick. It informs people of when the trailer is released and includes enticing details to generate buzz before the big release.

A fashion poster includes information on where and when the event is being held, the event sponsor details, the event episode, and more.

Poster Template

This is a simple fashion poster with key event details. The copy includes a reference to "age". The trendy picture of a man in casual attire indicates the collections that might be on display.

Travel posters

These posters accomplish the dual purpose of promoting travel services while inspiring people to travel.

Travel posters feature the biggest attractions in the world. They include the most attractive spots that usher wanderlust in people, like white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. They are typically colorful and display luxury to attract travel enthusiasts.

Poster Template

This is a travel poster that comes with the caption “ When all else fails, take a vacation ”. The caption and the scenic background encourage people to travel and take a break from their busy schedules.

Event posters

Event posters don’t require much description.

However, they focus on generating buzz and awareness about the event. They typically include bite-sized information, enough to grab people's attention, and a call-to-action encouraging them to register.

An event poster’s design and the copy must seamlessly convey what the audience can expect from the event.

Poster Template

This is an event poster that conveys the 'what', 'where', and 'when' of the event. The copy also includes information about the performers, where to buy tickets, and more.

Let's look at the different ways you can customize your creative poster design to achieve your campaign goals.

Creative Poster Idea #1: Use Color Overlays For Motivational Posters

Color overlays subdue the background. A minimalist approach is often the best for motivational posters.

Motivational posters typically feature an eye-catching background image along with an inspiring caption. However, at times, the image can grab all the attention and distract the viewer from consuming the motivational message.

Color overlays help solve this by neutralizing the background. Thus, the poster copy draws the reader’s attention.

motivational Poster Template

Above is a motivational poster in which a transparent layer highlights the text and subdues the background image.

Gradients offer an equally good alternative to create focus when working with a motivational poster.

Creative Poster Idea #2: Dual-toned Headline

A dual-toned headline enhances the look and feel of a creative poster. The trick is to choose two contrasting hues that stand out from the background.

The poster below typifies this. The caption “ Stop Racism ” is in contrasting colors and, therefore, pops out and grabs the attention.

Poster Template

Remember - human eyes are drawn toward objects that are distinguishable from those around them.

Creative Poster Idea #3: Stick To A Consistent Page Margin Width

Poster Template

Two aspects of this poster make it a must-have in your design kit.

The title caption “ Shape your body muscle ” complements the photo of a man lifting dumbbells and displaying his muscular and toned physique.

The second standout feature is the consistent margin width, which gives it an organized, professional look. As you read one line after the other, your eyes know immediately where to look next. That’s the key trait of this ad poster, encouraging people to join the fitness center and build muscle.

So one idea for your next poster is a consistent margin width.

Creative Poster Idea #4: Choose A Bold Color Scheme

Minimalist designs dominated the last decade, but the bold color scheme is becoming mainstream again. Especially for posters, a bold color scheme helps designs stand out from the rest.

Poster Template

Take this poster example. The designer’s bold color choices have elevated the design. It also does a good job of drawing the reader’s attention and conveying the message quickly.

Creative Poster Idea #5: Pick a Poster Idea Relevant To The Theme

Design choices incongruent with the poster theme or topic are more common than most of us think. For example, a business poster would not look like it if its design contained fun font choices and a rich color palette.

Poster Template

Take this poster example. It’s a restaurant poster announcing a 30 percent offer on the weekend menu. The copy complements an image of a mouthwatering food item that encourages people to visit the restaurant and grab the offer.

In other words, the poster design is coherent as the font, color choices and design elements are complementary.

Creative Poster Idea #6: Include Product Images In Your Poster

A designer must know if their poster design needs a product image to lend a focal point or even to purely reinforce the messaging.

Poster Template

In this cosmetic poster, the designer has included cosmetic products that not only reflect the poster’s theme but also are the main focus.

BONUS TIP: Check if the product image can also be a part of the poster caption to blend it seamlessly with the design.

Creative Poster Idea #7: Incorporate Shapes And Patterns In Your Poster Design

In this poster example, the design elements and caption combine to drive the key message: “ Stop ocean plastic pollution. ”

Poster Template

Plastic bottles and other objects floating in the ocean is not an uncommon sight.

In this case, the designer has used a graphical illustration to convey the core message.

Creative Poster Idea #8: Use Objects And Icons To guide The Eye To Key Information

Effective use of objects and icons draws the reader’s attention to the key part(s) of a poster.

Poster Template

In this poster example, the arrangement of fruits directs the eye to the centrally-aligned text.

The design also complements the theme of the event that’s advertised.

Creative Poster Idea #9: Add Poster Depth With A Transparent Background

Earlier we mentioned the importance of color overlay to subdue the background image.

Now, a transparent background can also help increase the depth of your poster.

Poster Template

Take this poster example. The designer has provided extra depth with a transparent background. In addition, a bold color palette along with a contextual image lends elegance to the design.

Creative Poster Idea #10: A Simple, Crisp Tagline Works Wonders

In today’s fast-paced world, getting the message across quickly is as important as conveying the right message.

This poster does it efficiently.

Poster Template

It gets straight to the point with the caption right at the top, complemented by a minimalist design and color scheme.

Creative Poster Idea #11: Don’t Worry About Negative Space

Not every poster design must cover each pixel to make it interesting and attractive.

Poster Template

As this poster example shows, negative space is not a bad design practice. Instead, it allows the poster text to gain prominence.

Creative Poster Idea #12: Ensure The Key Information Is Noticeable

Key information such as location, address, and contact details should be easy to find and read. After all, searching for those details from top to bottom, only to find them lying around somewhere, creates a bad experience. Also, the poster may not solve the problem effectively.

Poster Template

Take this poster example. It first answers the question ‘what’. Secondly, the reader can also get answers to questions ‘when’ and ‘where’ quite easily.

Creative Poster Idea #13: Let The Background Image Speak For The Poster

It is not uncommon for poster backgrounds to feel lost in a design. However, it doesn’t have to and can be the focal point of the poster.

Poster Template

Take this poster. It’s an announcement of an offer on the occasion of Holi festival.

The background sets the theme for the poster as people splash and play with the color powder, which is symbolic of Holi.

Creative Poster Idea #14: Use Contrasting Colors To Highlight Key Information

Incorporating contrasting colors in your creative poster is an effective way to grab the reader’s attention and convey information easily.

Poster Template

In this poster example, the words “STOP” and “HATE” are in contrasting hues, which adds to their prominence.

Creative Poster Idea #15: Use Colors And Shapes To Simplify Your Messaging

If your creative poster is packed with information, then effective use of colors and shapes can simplify and convey your message.

It is up to the designer to decide how much information they want to include in their poster, but it needs to be neatly organized for it to work.

Poster Template

Take this poster example. The smart use of icons and objects conveys the information in visual form, while the date and location details give the poster an organized look.

Creative Poster Idea #16: Experiment With Unique Fonts And Colors

Sometimes, a more casual design can convey the message more effectively.

Poster Template

As we see in this creative poster example. The letters in the word “HOLI” are presented in a unique way to fit the theme and also give it a casual look.

Creative Poster Idea #17: You Don’t Always Have To Use The Full Canvas

This is similar to negative space in your poster.

You don't always need to use the entire canvas and fill it up with content.

Effective use of space is an important part of design, let alone posters, as it gives a professional look and guides the reader to the key parts of the design.

Poster Template

Take this poster example. The designer has ensured the poster conveys the essential information and, by providing enough white space, has clearly defined the focal point.

Creative Poster Idea #18: Minimalism + Bold Colors = Killer Combination

Take this creative poster example. It combines minimalism with a dash of bold colors to catch the eye.

Poster Template

This poster is a great example of how to effectively get your message across without abandoning minimalism principles.

Creative Poster Idea #19: Ensure The Poster Design Matches The Event Theme

This is particularly true for event posters.

You don’t want your music festival poster to wear the look of one that promotes a book fair.

Take the above creative poster as an example. It is an advert for a music festival. Its design, graphic elements and font choices make it clear to the reader that it is a music festival poster.

Creative Poster Idea #20: Use Boxes And Borders To Break Down Poster Into Different Sections

No hard-and-fast rule exists as to how much information you should include in your creative poster.

Poster Template

However, the information you include in your poster must be easily consumable for the reader.

Using boxes and borders helps convey your message easily and adds hierarchy to your poster, as we see in this creative poster example.

Creative Poster Idea #21: Emphasize Elements To Heighten The Drama

You don’t want your poster to be bland and feel empty as your target audience sees it, do you?

Posters must create an emotional connection with your reader and persuade them to know more about your brand, what you’re selling, and what’s in it for them.

Emphasizing the elements in your poster is an effective way to emotionally connect with your reader. Ensure that it matches your poster's theme.

Poster Template

As this Valentine’s Day poster example shows.

The poster design is impactful and is likely to elicit a reaction from the viewer.

Creative Poster Idea #22: Be Prepared To Experiment

It is okay to experiment with your poster design to create an impact with your audience and draw a reaction from them.

Poster Template

Take this creative poster example. Its description is a little out of the ordinary. But ultimately, it does a stellar job of conveying the message and heightening the level of curiosity.

Creative Poster Idea #23: Use Photos For Credibility

Photos, like other design elements, alter the feel and mood of your poster. And importantly, convey a message on its own.

Poster Template

Take this creative poster example. It’s a poster designed to invite professionals to attend a business conference. While the text makes it clear the poster is about a business conference, the photo of a man in a business suit adds a layer of professionalism to the poster.

Creative Poster Idea #24: Experiment With Formatting And Size

All posters are designed differently, and their formatting and size don’t always have to be the same either.

Poster Template

It’s okay to fiddle with the poster dimensions. It doesn’t always need to be vertical either (give horizontal and square a try).

Don’t be afraid to experiment with the design to maximize the potential of your creative poster.

Creative Poster Idea #25: Limit Your Call-to-action To Just One

Posters must provide enough information to persuade the readers to take action.

Poster Template

This creative poster example has one Call-to-action, the perfect number for each poster.

Adding more than one CTA could confuse the reader and clutter your designs.

Designing a poster that grabs the eyeballs and leads your target audience to take action needs a well-defined approach.

Here’re five tips to design a creative poster that gets you results.

Tip #1: Start With A Poster Template

Get the foundation you need for your poster by choosing a poster template from Picmaker’s library . Identify a template with the type of layout you need (image placeholders, header placement, icons and illustrations, and more) and which will help you accomplish your goal.

Tip #2: Choose A Branded Color Palette

Your color palette is one of the most prominent features of your poster. It varies based on the event or purpose of your poster. If your organization has brand design guidelines, Picmaker gives you the option to upload your brand logo , custom font, and brand colors, and incorporate them into your poster design.

Tip #3: Use Fonts As Per The Hierarchy Of Information

Choose primary, secondary and tertiary fonts for your poster design. The headline takes the primary font as the part of the poster that grabs the reader’s attention and lends context to other information. Secondary and tertiary fonts should be used for the descriptive text below the headline, sub-titles (if any), bullet points and other text elements.

Tip #4: Amp Up Contrast

You have only one chance to capture a reader’s attention. Providing high contrast between the poster elements can help grab eye-balls. If your brand guidelines allow, choose a bold color palette and a high-contrast background to help your poster stand out.

Tip #5: Download Your Poster In Optimal Format

Once you have designed your creative poster, download it in an optimal format based on how you want to distribute it. Picmaker, a free poster creator, allows you to download your poster in PNG, PDF, and JPEG formats. Downloading in PNG format will be ideal for use on social media and to share via emails. If you want to print out the poster, download it in PDF format.

  • Posters are an effective tool for marketing and advertising as they inherently boost a brand’s image and clearly communicate the message.
  • Posters come in a variety of formats and cater to different purposes, but each poster needs to be tailored to maximize its potential.
  • Pick a creative poster idea that fits the theme of your event. You can choose a poster template from Picmaker’s extensive library of templates and customize it based on your requirements.
  • Don’t hesitate to experiment with high-contrast colors in your poster design as this helps grab the reader’s attention. But ensure your color theme is on-brand.
  • Include photos in your poster (if necessary) to add credibility and make your design professional.
  • Use Picmaker’s MAD Button to jazz up your design and effortlessly mix and match colors, fonts, and typography to create a high-converting poster.

Poster presentations are a popular presentation format for research and clinical findings. These presentations effectively communicate the research data and concepts to the audience using a balanced combination of visuals and text. We will also look into a few poster presentation examples to see how they help communicate with the audience perceptively and concisely.

1. What is a Poster Presentation?

A poster presentation is a short, concise yet clear way of communicating your research, study findings, concepts, and ideas. There are two most critical elements in any poster presentation example: a poster and a brief explanation.

Creating a poster presentation starts with analyzing and evaluating information or synthesizing ideas to present all necessary data and facts. The properties of an effective poster presentation are:

  • The flow of information is well-organized and easy to follow.
  • The text is easy to read, as a large font is used, and the information is not cluttered.
  • Allows to convert to a mind map or a timeline diagram from the Gantt chart
  • The balanced use of visuals, text, colors, and graphics makes the poster presentation attractive without losing its functionality.

Innovative Presentation Ideas: Captivate Your Audience with Creative Approaches

blog asset

Creating an engaging presentation requires more than just delivering information—it’s about capturing your audience's attention, making your message memorable, and encouraging interaction. To help you stand out and leave a lasting impression, here are some innovative presentation ideas that can elevate your content and captivate your audience.

1. Interactive Polls and Q&A Sessions

Engagement through interaction.

Integrating interactive elements such as live polls or Q&A sessions can significantly increase audience participation and engagement. These tools make your presentation more dynamic and allow you to tailor your content based on real-time feedback.

How to Implement:

  • Live Polls: Use platforms like Slido or Mentimeter to conduct live polls where the audience can vote on questions or provide opinions. Display the results immediately to spark discussions.
  • Q&A Sessions: Allocate time for a Q&A segment where the audience can ask questions. Consider using a tool that allows anonymous submissions to encourage more candid questions.

Scenario: During a marketing strategy presentation, start with a live poll asking the audience about their biggest marketing challenges. Use the poll results to shape the rest of your presentation, addressing the most common issues.

2. Storytelling with Visuals

Bring your message to life.

Storytelling is a powerful technique for making your presentation memorable. Combine storytelling with compelling visuals to create a narrative that resonates with your audience and makes your message more impactful.

  • Narrative Arc: Structure your presentation as a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Introduce characters, conflicts, and resolutions to make your content relatable.
  • Visual Aids: Use high-quality images, videos, and infographics to illustrate key points and evoke emotions. Tools like Canva or Adobe Spark can help create visually appealing content.

Scenario: In a pitch for a new product, start with a story about a customer’s journey before and after using your product. Use images and video clips to illustrate the transformation, making the benefits of your product tangible and relatable.

3. Gamification

Make learning fun.

Gamification involves incorporating game-like elements into your presentation to make learning more engaging. This approach can turn routine information into an interactive experience, boosting motivation and retention.

  • Quizzes and Challenges: Include quizzes or challenges throughout your presentation. Award points or prizes for correct answers to keep the audience engaged.
  • Interactive Scenarios: Create scenarios or simulations where the audience can make decisions and see the outcomes. This can be particularly effective in training or educational presentations.

Scenario: During a workshop on project management, organize a team-based challenge where groups compete to solve a case study. Use a leaderboard to track progress and provide rewards for the winning team.

4. Live Demonstrations and Showcases

Show, don’t just tell.

Live demonstrations can make your presentation more engaging by providing practical, hands-on examples of your product or concept. This approach allows your audience to see your ideas in action and better understand their application.

  • Product Demos: If you’re presenting a new product, demonstrate its features and benefits live. Allow the audience to interact with the product if possible.
  • Live Simulations: For educational or technical presentations, conduct a live simulation to showcase how a process works in real time.

Scenario: In a tech conference presentation, perform a live demo of your software, showing its key features and benefits. Allow the audience to ask questions and interact with the software during the demo.

5. Audience Participation Activities

Encourage active involvement.

Involving your audience in activities can make your presentation more interactive and memorable. Participation activities can range from group discussions to hands-on exercises, depending on your presentation’s goals.

  • Breakout Sessions: Divide the audience into small groups to discuss specific topics or solve problems. Have each group share their findings with the larger audience.
  • Interactive Exercises: Incorporate activities such as role-playing, brainstorming sessions, or creative workshops to engage the audience actively.

Scenario: During a leadership training session, organize a role-playing exercise where participants act out different leadership scenarios. Facilitate a discussion afterward to reflect on the exercise and extract key lessons.

6. Incorporating Augmented Reality (AR)

Enhance the presentation experience.

Augmented Reality (AR) can create immersive experiences that captivate your audience and bring your content to life. This technology can be particularly effective for presentations involving complex data or concepts.

  • AR Apps: Use AR applications to overlay digital content onto physical objects or environments. Tools like Zappar or ARKit can help integrate AR into your presentation.
  • Interactive Models: Create interactive 3D models that the audience can explore using AR, enhancing their understanding of the subject matter.

Scenario: In a presentation about architectural design, use AR to allow the audience to view 3D models of building projects through their smartphones or tablets, giving them a better sense of the design and layout.

7. Utilizing Data Visualization

Simplify complex information.

Effective data visualization can help simplify complex information and make it more accessible. Using charts, graphs, and infographics can enhance understanding and retention.

  • Infographics: Create infographics that summarize key data points and trends. Tools like Piktochart or Tableau can assist in designing effective visualizations.
  • Interactive Charts: Use interactive charts and graphs that allow the audience to explore data in real time.

Scenario: During a financial report presentation, use interactive charts to display revenue trends and projections. Allow the audience to filter the data by different criteria to explore various scenarios.

8. Incorporating Live Feedback

Adapt and improve in real time.

Collecting live feedback during your presentation allows you to adjust your content based on audience responses and interests. This approach can help you address the most relevant issues and maintain engagement.

  • Live Feedback Tools: Use tools like Mentimeter or Slido to gather real-time feedback from your audience. Pose questions or request opinions throughout the presentation.
  • Instant Polls: Conduct quick polls to gauge the audience’s understanding or interest in specific topics, and adjust your content accordingly.

Scenario: In a product launch presentation, use live polls to ask the audience about their preferences or concerns regarding the product. Use the feedback to address these points in real time.

Innovative presentation ideas can significantly enhance your ability to engage and captivate your audience. By incorporating interactive elements, storytelling, gamification, live demonstrations, audience participation, AR, data visualization, and live feedback, you can create a presentation that is not only informative but also memorable and impactful. Tailor these ideas to fit your presentation’s goals and audience to ensure a successful and engaging experience.

12 Scientific Poster Examples [And How To Create One]

Written by: Ivonna Cabrera Jul 02, 2023

Scientific Poster Examples

Truth be told, scientific posters are effective at piquing interest. It’s incredible how graphics and presentation style can attract audiences.

Want to make a scientific poster but don’t know how? Well, you no longer need to be a design guru if you use Venngage’s Poster Maker .

You can speed up the process even more by using our scientific poster templates.

Before I dive right into scientific poster examples, let’s discuss what scientific posters are in the first place.

Click to jump ahead:

What is a scientific poster?

Best examples of scientific posters, how to create a scientific poster, what makes a good scientific poster.

  • What you need to make a scientific poster
  • What’s the purpose of a scientific or research poster?

A scientific poster is a visual presentation of research findings or scientific information shared with audiences at conferences, symposiums, and academic events. Scientific posters generally provide information on topics their authors are currently discussing.

Many scientists, researchers and medical experts use scientific posters to explain their findings in a simple and easy-to-understand format.

Of course, text isn’t the best way to show how scientific posters work.

So, I’ll let these examples do the talking.

Academic scientific poster examples

An academic scientific poster presents complicated information in a visually appealing manner.

Choosing the right poster layout is important here. Generally, sections such as an introduction, use, process, and takeaways allow students to understand a process or concept in a step-by-step method.

Here’s a great example of a scientific poster that discusses distillation:

Chemistry poster examples

Chemistry posters play a vital role in the scientific community by highlighting the importance of chemistry as a subject.

They also promote a deeper understanding of its principles and applications.

Here’s a great example:

A chemistry poster is usually organized in a logical and structured manner to effectively convey information.

Here are some common elements you can find in chemistry posters:

  • Introduction

Here’s another example of a chemistry poster that displays only the abstract to hook the reader.

A good scientific poster is often an attractive and easy-to-read presentation of scientific research .

They may include images, diagrams, graphs and tables, and they often focus on one or two main points.

Combining data and design together makes it easy for readers to dissect information easily, thanks to an attention-grabbing layout, simplified language and easy-to-follow jargon explanations where necessary.

scientific poster examples

A lot of layouts allow you to prioritize information and separate it into circles or boxes, like in the template above.

This type of poster design allows the reader to consume less time when reading the full context of a situation.

What do you need to make a useful scientific poster?

This is the section you’ve been waiting for — the best way to make a scientific poster from scratch.

Read on to learn about the steps below, and they come with easy-to-follow examples, too.

Study good scientific or academic poster examples

Venngage has great scientific poster templates for your first scientific poster. You can customize these templates using Venngage’s drag-and-drop editor.

Let’s take a look at each of them below.

The sparse but surgically precise use of text here contrasts the lush use of plants to explain photosynthesis.

Short explanations can be accompanied by explainer text in corner resource boxes that discuss the other details of photosynthesis.

Good science poster examples are readable from 10 feet away

There are many reasons why posters should be readable from 10 feet away.

The main reason is to allow readers to fully understand the concept from where they stand or walk.

For example, in a school or office hall, bulletin boards are usually 5 to 10 feet away from potential viewers. A poster that can be viewed within this range entices the audience to come closer and read the details.

School posters effectively engage students by presenting visual content that reinforces learning objectives or communicates important information. Browse our collection of school poster templates for inspiration and ideas.

The second reason is to allow readers to quickly comprehend the poster.

People usually don’t have time to stop and read a poster. In a school or office, everyone’s walking to do something urgently.

Thus, you don’t want to take up too much of your time reading jargon and difficult concepts that even academic peers can take hours to read and interpret.

Dark Red Climate Change Scientific Poster

Being readable from 10 feet away makes it easy for readers to understand your research.

You can use varying font sizes to create great posters. For digital campaigns, make sure that your posters are suitable for modern browsers.

Venngage’s  My Brand Kit  feature allows you to create posters that help your audience understand valuable info.

This is a special tool for Business accounts that allows you to upload logos, choose fonts, and set color palettes to your scientific posters .

Use our real-time collaboration feature to invite team members and work together. You can also leave comments and get feedback instantly.

Alternatively, share your design online, on social media, or via email completely for free.

Make an attention-grabbing, short headline

Attention-grabbing headlines are easy for science articles and posters.

It’s always thrilling to find out about a new plant species or discoveries that debunk old theories.

It’s a good idea to use best practices in making attention-grabbing headlines, even if it is just casual scientific content for social media.

Titles that draw attention and engagement include:

  • Trending topics Create headlines according to what is trending. For example, if your study discusses climate change , align your headline to this topic to engage readers.
  • Controversial developments An old textbook fact being false is a controversial and surprising topic which you can easily sum up in a headline.
  • Issues that address curiosity Humans are naturally curious, so tickling the audience’s curiosity is a great way to create a compelling and attention-grabbing headline.

Use bullets and numbering to make a list easier to read

Bullets, lists and clear language are all tools that improve readability.

Even without fancy graphics and poster backgrounds , a short-sentence, simple-worded post with bullets and lists makes it easy to understand any topic.

Bulleted lists make each subtopic of your scientific poster easy to read. Plus, it allows readers to jump from one subtopic to another without feeling like they missed information along the way.

Designers of scientific posters find it easier to design bulleted and list content because they can place every bullet in different sections, making the poster easy to read.

Simple Dark Distillation Scientific Poster Template

If you used bullets instead of boxes to explain each subtopic in this poster, you could still read it easily — just not from 10 feet away.

Ensure layout consistency

Layout consistency is the uniform appearance of elements within a design.

It is achieved by employing the same layout, color and typography throughout an entire design.

For example, if a web page uses a consistent layout, each page will be uniform in appearance but not necessarily in content.

Layout consistency is achieved by employing the same pattern, color and typography throughout an entire design. This uniform appearance helps readers navigate for better organization.

Creating layout consistency is of crucial importance in scientific poster design because coherence creates a familiar mood and attachment for readers.

Include acknowledgments, names and affiliations

Lastly, all scientific posters include their acknowledgments, researcher names and affiliations underneath the poster.

You can use a footnote to include these details or a resource box. Plus, if you used any links as references in your research, add them to this section.

Simple Climate Change Scientific Poster

If you were the researcher involved in this scientific poster , you could include all the information I’ve mentioned underneath the last paragraph using a line to indicate that they are acknowledgments and author information.

Searching for a research poster? Browse through our collection of research poster templates in to get started!

What is the purpose of a scientific poster?

Academics are the only ones who can read and understand a technical scientific paper.

To a normal reader, a research paper’s language and syntax are challenging. Scientific papers don’t prioritize reading flow in their outlines or exposition of data, methods and results.

But with a well-made and creative poster , reading a technical paper becomes easier.

For example, effective scientific posters include images that explain complicated terms.

At the same time, the poster layout makes data and text easy to read. Lastly, scientific posters use simple language that allows even young children to understand concepts.

FAQ about scientific posters

I know you’re all set to make your own designs, but you might want to have these questions answered too.

What should a scientific poster include?

A scientific poster should include an easy-to-follow layout, graphics and color schemes that don’t take away from the reading experience. Successful scientific posters also use short sentences, simple language and bullet points.

How do you write a good scientific poster?

Researchers must focus on the evidence behind the research. Afterward, they can concentrate on using simple language and short sentences to explain their point. Short text and simple words make it easier for graphic designers to create posters with an intuitive layout.

How do you write a scientific title for a poster?

Focus on aligning your title with human emotions and curiosity. Outside human emotions, you can align your titles toward controversial or trending issues. This article dedicates an entire section to writing a great scientific title for a poster, so you should head there to learn more!

You could even write your message on a box of hot and delicious cheese pizza and deliver it to your date’s house. 16. Plan a Scavenger Hunt

18. Make Way for Ducklings

Use a simple pun like “I’d be a lucky duck if you’d go to the dance with me,” but pair it with an army of rubber ducks! Hide them in her locker, backpack or car as clues to the final big proposal at the end of the day.

19. Write a Sweet Poem

Picnic and a poem

You can’t go wrong with a classic poem on your proposal sign. Try something like “Roses are red, violets are blue, I’d like to go to Homecoming with You!” To make these  homecoming poster ideas really pop with romance, take your potential partner on a picnic date and then read them your poem.

20. Add a Beautiful Bouquet

Pair a simple poster with a bouquet of your date’s favorite flowers to add a classic and romantic touch to your homecoming proposal. While you could opt for a punny sign, you could keep these homecoming poster ideas simple and just have a little message like, “Will you go to the dance with me?” to pair with your bouquet.

21. Make a Photo Collage

On your poster, cut out pictures of the two of you and include a cute saying like, “Will you help make the homecoming dance picture perfect?” You could get even more creative and make a collage featuring your faces on the bodies of celebrities walking a red carpet. Make a clever joke like “I can picture us at HoCo together.” These  homecoming poster ideas are s imple, clever and personal.

22. Use Something Other than Poster Board

What are HoCo posters? Well, traditionally they are signs that you decorate and hold up as part of your homecoming “proposal,” but you don’t have to limit yourself to a piece of paper! Try writing your proposal on a football, volleyball or baseball. You can even use glass markers to write on the windows of a car for big-statement homecoming poster ideas.

23. Pass a Simple Note

Just pass a note

If you’re wondering “How do you make a HoCo proposal?”, the answer really depends on your personality. You can go with an over-the-top, creative proposal, or you can slip her a note in class. Who wouldn’t love the simple “Homecoming? Check one.” note. For these classic  homecoming poster ideas, d raw three boxes under your questions where they can check “yes,” “no,” or “maybe.” You could even recreate this classic high school experience on a big piece of poster board and give them a giant Sharpie so they can make their choice right then and there.

24. Make a Most Wanted Sign

For fun yet effective  homecoming poster ideas, t urn your poster into a classic “Most Wanted” sign right out of the Wild West. Be sure to include a photo of your crush. Underneath their photo, write “Most Wanted for a date to Homecoming.” Complete the look by wearing a bandana and cowboy hat. Don’t forget to throw on some boots for good measure!

25. Incorporate a Group

Homecoming poster ideas  come in many shapes or sizes, but this is one way to include all of your friends. Instead of making a big poster, simply print out the word “Homecoming” and a question mark, with each letter large enough to fill the entire page. Then, have a group of friends help you spell out your question for your date. Just be sure everyone stands in the right spot so that the word is spelled correctly!

26. Make a Video Dance Proposal

Make a video

If you’d rather show off your video editing skills, put together a digital homecoming dance proposal by editing a video on your phone that ends with you showing your date a simple HoCo poster. Then stage a special moment to show the video to your crush. By the time the video ends, be standing behind them with the sign in real life! This is one of the cutest homecoming poster ideas for a lasting memory.

27. Use Their Driveway

Instead of intricate homecoming sign ideas that involve getting crafty with glue and glitter, use sidewalk chalk or chalk paint and your potential date’s driveway or sidewalk to ask them to attend the dance with you.

28. Use What You Have

You don’t have to go out of your way to create homecoming proposal ideas that will amaze your date. Instead, look around for the supplies you already have. Try repurposing letters and images from old magazines to make a collage-style proposal poster.

29. Include Your Pets

Include your pets

Attach a sweet note to your cat’s collar that says “Homecoming with you would be purr-fect,” or have your dog fetch a poster with a clever saying like “I couldn’t paw-sibly go to HoCo without you!”

30. Make an Extra-Large Banner

If a normal-sized poster just won’t cut it, use an old bed sheet or tablecloth to create a giant banner that you can unfurl from a window or have friends hold up as you ask your date to the dance.

31. Just Ask!

It can be easy to compare yourself to other people in school or on social media who have created elaborate homecoming poster ideas, posters and signs. It can also be intimidating to find the courage to ask someone special to attend a dance with you! Don’t let your nerves get in the way. A simple conversation with your crush could be one of the best ways to propose a homecoming date.

We hope this list of 31 homecoming poster ideas has helped you pick a unique way of “proposing” to your date. Now all that’s left is to decide what you’ll wear to the dance!
