A senior thesis is required by the Mathematics concentration to be a candidate for graduation with the distinction of High or Highest honors in Mathematics. See the document ‘ Honors in Mathematics ’ for more information about honors recommendations and about finding a topic and advisor for your thesis. With regards to topics and advisors: The document ‘ Faculty research areas ’ lists the research interests of current members of the Math Department.

So that Math Department senior theses can more easily benefit other undergraduate, we would like to exhibit more senior theses online (while all theses are available through Harvard University Archives, it would be more convenient to have them online). It is absolutely voluntary, but if you decide to give us your permission, please send an electronic version of your thesis to cindy@math. The format can be in order of preference: DVI, PS, PDF. In the case of submitting a DVI format, make sure to include all EPS figures. You can also submit Latex or MS word source files.

PhD Dissertations

In 1909 the department awarded its first PhD to  Grace M. Bareis , whose dissertation was directed by Professor Harry W. Kuhn. The department began awarding PhD degrees on a regular basis around 1930, when a formal doctoral program was established as a result of the appointment of Tibor Radó as a professor at our department. To date, the department has awarded over 800 PhD degrees. An average of approximately 15 dissertations per year have been added in recent times. Department of Mathematics

Senior theses.

An undergraduate thesis is a singly-authored mathematics document, usually between 10 and 80 pages, on some topic in mathematics. The thesis is typically a mixture of exposition of known mathematics and an account of your own research.  

To write an undergraduate thesis, you need to find a faculty advisor who will sponsor your project. The advisor will almost surely be a faculty member of the pure math department, though on occasion we have accepted theses written by people with applied math advisors. In these rare cases, the theses have been essentially pure math theses.

Introduction to Dissertation 

OMMS and Part C students are required to undertake a dissertation worth two units as part of their degree programme. This can be either a mathematics dissertation or a statistics dissertation. 

The dissertation will entail investigating a topic in an area of the Mathematical Sciences under the guidance of a dissertation supervisor. This will culminate in a written dissertation with a word limit of 7,500 words, which usually equates to 25-35 pages. It is expected that students embarking on a dissertation will be working on it over Christmas vacation, Hilary Term and Easter vacation for submission in early Trinity Term.

Students completing a dissertation may request a book for consultation if it is held only by the Whitehead Library (and not held in the RSL, their College library or as an e-book) by emailing the Librarian at @email .

The book will be sent to the RSL where it can be consulted for reference, not borrowing.   Please see further information  here .

Choosing a topic

Following the Dissertation Information Session, a list of potential dissertation topics will be published below. Each topic will be accompanied by a short abstract outlining the project with details on necessary pre-requisite knowledge and the maximum number of students who will be able to take each topic. You will be asked to complete an online form, ranking 5 of the topics. Please note that Maths Part C students are only permitted to chose a maximum of three statistics topics. You will be notified of which project you have been allocated by the end of week 5.

Oral Presentation

Each student is required to give an oral presentation to their supervisors and at least one other person with some knowledge of the field of the dissertation. These will usually take place in the final two weeks of Hilary Term. The presentation does not count towards the final assessment of the project, however, it will give you an opportunity to practise your presentation skills which will prove useful in your later careers.

What is a Dissertation Preface? Definition and Examples

A dissertation preface is an integral part of the dissertation writing process for both graduate and doctoral students. Even though the preface is found at the beginning of the dissertation, it is essentially a task that authors engage in at the very end of their dissertation work.  

What is a Dissertation Preface?  

A dissertation preface is a section that precedes the main body of your dissertation. Unlike other sections of the dissertation, which are strictly academic and formal, the preface offers a more personal touch as it provides context and insight into your research journey. In this section, the author outlines the background and criticality of the work they have done, acknowledges contributions, and reflects on the experiences and challenges they faced during the research process. 

The dissertation preface serves various purposes, including:  

  • Providing context : The key purpose is to provide the study’s main context so that the reader can understand its relevance and scope. 
  • Sharing the author’s experience in writing the document : In the preface, there is space for the author’s personal reflections as they talk about the importance of the work, personal experiences, and issues and challenges they would have faced. The author can discuss their research goals, the particular research methods that were utilized, and the reasons for their choice. 
  • Expressing the author’s motivation : The preface is also used to express the interests or motivations that led to the research and its writing.  
  • Acknowledging contributions : Although a separate acknowledgements section is often included, most authors choose to mention key institutions, faculty, mentors, family, and friends who contributed in significant ways to the research.  

What to include in a dissertation preface?  

Here are the essential components that should be covered in a dissertation preface: 

  • A short personal background of the author. 
  • A brief account of your personal experiences with the study matter or circumstances that inspired you to conduct the research. 
  • A brief description of how you did your research and any challenges during the research process. 
  • Mention the target audience of your dissertation. 
  • In the closing of the preface, provide your name and place. And date of writing. 

Is Preface and Acknowledgements same?  

While both the preface and the acknowledgements sections are personal, they are two very distinct sections that serve different purposes and are placed differently within a dissertation. Usually, dissertations contain either a preface or an acknowledgement section. As detailed above, the preface provides context, shares personal experiences while writing and the circumstances that motivated the conduct of the study. Institutions and critical individuals are also acknowledged for their contributions. The acknowledgements section is focused entirely on expressing gratitude to all persons and institutions that contributed significantly to the research and dissertation writing process. 

How to write a dissertation preface?  

  • Provide a brief introduction to your topic: Begin with an engaging statement or anecdote that captures the reader’s attention and introduces your dissertation topic. Offer a glimpse of the content, key topics you discuss, and why your central theme or argument is crucial to be studied in depth. 
  • Express what inspired you to conduct the study: Briefly discuss the rationale for your research, including aspects that motivated you to delve deeper into the study. 
  • Detail your research process: Mention how you conducted the research, the setbacks or challenges, the choice of methods and so on can be outlined. 
  • Specify your target audience: This is important to engage the interest of the concerned people in your research work. 
  • Thank those who supported your research and dissertation: Give due credit to the people and institutions that helped you complete your research and dissertation. 

Preface example  

Understanding the existential issue of climate change and its impact on our environment, specifically on fragile coral reef ecosystems, has been a persistent goal for me since high school. The work before you is the result of this passion and my desire to discover ways to mitigate the damages caused by quickly changing climate conditions.  Over the years, I have followed and put in many years of research and hard work to find ways to preserve these “rainforests of the sea.” Engaging with subject experts and advocates of environmental sustainability across academic circles and also the industry gave me the necessary wherewithal to start thinking of this research work.   

As I went along this challenging journey, I learned many things that have enriched this study. From navigating the complexities of data collection to balancing academic commitments, each step taught me valuable lessons in perseverance and critical thinking. This would not have been possible without the encouragement and support of many people.   

I am deeply grateful to my mentor and supervisor, Professor Janine Forsythe, for her guidance and support throughout this project. Her expertise and encouragement were invaluable in my research. A special thanks to my faculty for their support and for providing me with an enriching research environment. It would be remiss of me not to mention and thank the National Endowment Fund for providing me with the necessary grant, without which this work would not have been completed. Lastly, I am grateful to my family and friends for putting up with my long working hours and often distracted self. DU Professor Helps Solve Famous 70-Year-Old Math Problem

Whether it be flying trapeze, participating in competitive weightlifting or solving math problems that have confounded academics for decades, Mandi Schaeffer Fry enjoys chasing the next adventure.

Schaeffer Fry, who joined the University of Denver’s Department of Mathematics in the fall of 2023, will be the first faculty member since the 1880s to be published in the Annals of Mathematics , widely seen as the industry’s most prestigious journal.

In 2022, Schaeffer Fry helped complete a problem that dates to 1955—mathematician Richard Brauer’s Height Zero Conjecture.

“Maybe one of the most challenging parts, other than the math itself, was the knowledge of the weight that this would have on the field,” Schaeffer Fry says. “If you’re going to make an announcement like this, you have to be darn sure that it’s absolutely correct.”

Over the years, number crunchers have worked on the problem at universities across the globe, and some found partial solutions; however, the problem was not completed until now.

“Mandi’s accomplishment is exciting. Solving Brauer's Height Zero Conjecture is remarkable,” Mathematics Department Chair Alvaro Arias says. 

The work is also a testament to DU’s achievement as a Research 1 (R1) institution.

Fry and her collaborators—University of Kaiserslautern Professor Gunter Malle, University of Valencia Professor Gabriel Navarro and Rutgers University Professor Pham Huu Tiep—worked around the clock over the course of three months in eight-hour shifts during the summer of 2022 to find a solution.

In April, that work was accepted for publication in the Annals of Mathematics.

'Brauer's Height Zero Conjecture (BHZ) was the first conjecture leading to the part of my field studying 'local-global' problems in the representation theory of finite groups, which seek to relate properties of groups with properties of certain nice smaller subgroups, letting us 'zoom in' on the group using just a specific prime number and simplify things," Schaeffer Fry says. 

"The BHZ gives us a way to tell from the character table of a group (a table of data that encodes lots, but not all, information about the group) whether or not certain of these subgroups, called defect groups, have the commutativity property," she adds.

This paper was especially meaningful to Schaeffer Fry as she had always wanted to work with Malle, Tiep and Navarro as they have been her primary mentors. Tiep was her PhD advisor and this was the first time they had worked together since then.

Fry believes she has solidified her place in the field and knows she’ll likely never top this accomplishment, but she’s always looking for the next adventure—whether that’s in or out of the classroom.

Flying high and pumping iron

When Schaeffer Fry isn’t on DU’s campus working with students or conducting research, you can find her flying trapeze and competitive weightlifting.

Schaeffer Fry became involved in competitive weightlifting during graduate school, and, in the last year of her PhD at the University of Arizona, she defended her dissertation one day and got on a plane and competed at the national level for “university-aged” athletes—which included Olympians.

While she now lifts weights more casually, Schaeffer Fry competed last September in an over-35 competition and qualified for the USA Weightlifting Masters National Championships.

It was a “field trip” during a conference in Berkeley, California, in 2018 that led Fry to become enamored with flying trapeze.

In fact, she enjoyed it so much she signed up to be a member of Imperial Flyers, an amateur flying trapeze cooperative located in Westminster. Once she found out about the sport, her previous experience as a gymnast made it a natural fit.

Not only is she working on her own intermediate tricks, she’s also a “teaching assistant” at Fly Mile High, the state’s only flying trapeze and aerial fitness school.

“It’s exhilarating; it’s gotten me a bit over my fear of heights,” she says.
