Personal Culture and Worldview

Unique cultures and worldviews significantly shape the way we view the world. Our values, beliefs, and experiences form unique cultures. Our values and experiences also shape our attitudes, behaviors, and decision-making. Therefore, culture is integral to our identity, and understanding helps us understand our environment and various contemporary issues. Unique culture and worldview are essential elements that influence our thoughts, actions, and relationship. They can either be a source of our strength and growth or a barrier to personal and intercultural understanding. This paper will provide an in-depth discussion of unique culture, faith, and contemporary issues such as sexuality, race, and Immigration.

Defining Culture

Our text defines culture as an ecosystem of institutions, practices, artifacts, and beliefs (Chastraw & Prior, 2019). The authors posit that culture comprises articulated and formally processed beliefs (Chatraw & Prior, 2019). According to the definition, it is clear that cultures form the basis on which we reason and relate with each other. For example, the type of food and how we eat might differ from someone living in Tokyo or Netherlands. The main reason is that people from Tokyo or Netherlands have distinct beliefs surrounding the food they consume, which are different from ours. As Chatraw and Prior (2019) put it, “culture provides a grid by which we live and interact with the world around us.”

Faith and Culture

I grew up on the Island of Saipan, where Christianity is embraced and practiced. I was socialized to the doctrines of Christianity because the majority of the people within the environment are Christians. Currently, Christianity has become part of my life and has helped me in terms of spiritual nourishment. As a Christian, my faith has helped me develop a sense of comfort, hope, and purpose in life. In addition, believing in Jesus Christ as my savior and following his teachings has helped me make decisions during difficult times. My faith has also helped me develop a deeper sense of community and connect with the people during prayers. That has also helped me serve others with love and joy as it is written in Galatians chapter five, verse thirteen.

My faith is the foundation upon which my identity is built. I have experienced a lot of personal growth because I usually strive to live in accordance with Christian values and principles. In addition to personal growth, my faith enables me to experience a closer relationship with God, which has helped build my identity. Faith is a journey through ups and downs, but due to my strong belief in God’s love and presence in my life, I have developed comfort and strength to persevere through difficult times.

Contemporary Issues

My cultural background and beliefs greatly shape my worldview of contemporary issues. Regarding race, I believe people are created equal regardless of their race. The book of Galatian chapter 3 verse 28 says that “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” King James Version Bible, 1994). Racial discrimination, which is still eminent in our country, is against the doctrines and beliefs that I have been raised in. I believe that people are born with equal potential and should be treated equally without any form of discrimination. People should ensure that they treat each other equally, and the system or the government should put proper mechanisms in which all can receive the same service without racial profiling, which can help eradicate racism across all states. Chatraw and Prior (2019) posit that the state of race in America is complicated because racism often manifests itself systematically or individually, and solving the two forms will lead to racial unity and reconciliation.

Sexuality has been the subject of much discussion in recent years. Views on sexuality across different cultures are different; the way I view sexuality is not the same way someone in the middle east views it. I have grown up in a culture that accepts same-sex relationships, and it is normal for same-sex marrying each other. However, as a Christian and in terms of biblical view, I believe that people should follow the doctrine and teachings of Jesus Christ. For example, in the book of Leviticus 18:22 and 21:13 male lying with another male is prohibited (Chatraw & Prior, 2019). The fundamental doctrine of Christianity requires that we obey God and follow all His teachings. However, we should love every community member despite our sexual orientation. The book of John 15:12-13 (King James Version Bible, 1994) says that we should love each other as Jesus Christ loved us, and that shows that we should resist any form of discrimination against members of LGBTQ due to their sexual orientation.

In terms of Immigration, I believe that we are born adventurous, and people should not be restricted from moving around the world. According to Chatraw and Prior (2019) the Bible does not have any particular set of immigration policies for any country, including that ours. As Christians, let us take care of immigrants because that is the way the holy scripture of God wants us to do. According to our text, the scripture often links foreigners with vulnerable groups such as the poor, the widow, and the orphan (Chatraw & Prior, 2019). The Bible also requires that we should protect the vulnerable in society. According to James 1:27 (King James Version Bible, 1994), we should look after the widows and orphans during their times of distress and protect ourselves from being polluted by the world. In addition to that, Deuteronomy 15:11 to 15 (King James Version Bible, 1994). says that for the poor will never cease from the land: therefore I command you, saying, ‘You should open your and wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’ That shows that we should not prevent people from immigrating into our country in the process of looking for greener pastures.

As truly depicted above, unique cultures and worldviews are essential elements that influence our thoughts, attitudes, and interactions with people. It influences even the things we eat, like food. In addition, I grew up in a culture dominated by Christianity, and my perception of the world revolves around the doctrines of the Bible. Contemporary issues such as Immigration, sexuality, and racism are some critical things people have been talking about recently. As a Christian, I believe we should not mistreat immigrants but rather provide a conducive environment where everyone can thrive and prosper. In terms of sexuality, I believe that the Bible dictates how we should marry and relates with each other, and we should conform to the teachings of Jesus Christ. However, we should not Judge those who are members of the LGBTQ because even the Bible prohibits us from Judging others. Racial discrimination is also another big issue, especially in our country. People of color are often mistreated by the criminal justice system, such as by police officers, and that should be eradicated because we were all created the same by God. This paper has greatly helped me in understanding how cultural background shapes the way I view the world. Sometimes I might judge people based on their sexual orientation the way my faith dictates, but I have learned that it is important to accept others who also have their cultural backgrounds and worldviews.

Culture is an integral part of personal identity and social order. It consists of values, beliefs, and regular activities that make up the lives of people all around the world. Numerous cultures are influencing the world today. Understanding cultural diversity provides a broader look at the surrounding environment and its various issues. With this essay, I will address my cultural background and discuss how it impacts my view on contemporary issues.

To begin with, the concept of culture should be defined and explained. Indeed, what is known as a culture is socially constructed. In the course book, it is defined as “the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group” (Chatraw and Prior, 2019). As it is seen, culture relates to all aspects of daily life that impact people’s perceptions about the way of living. For example, how people treat illnesses can be defined by culture, some cultures may use different herbs or perform healing rituals to lessen the physical condition of a patient. Hence, to understand what people think of and how they behave, it is critical to examine their culture.

When it comes to me, I am mixed race of Caucasian and African American and identify myself as spiritual. My cultural background does not solely define my identity, but it is a crucial part of it. Living in the United States, a country full of different cultures showed me how people can be different but at the same time have a common identity as an American citizens. Therefore, I also think that being an American is part of my culture.

Speaking about religiosity, I used to be Christian but after some events in my life, I start to realize that I prefer being spiritual. I believe in a higher power that people have a connection with the universe. I also prefer non-religious practices that help people get in touch with their spiritual selves through quiet reflection, time in nature, private prayer, yoga, or meditation. These practices make me feel mindful about my actions and help me to remain calm in stressful situations and even find solutions to various issues.

Indeed, my culture is influencing my worldview and perception of modern issues. For example, my African American part feels sensitive about the recent cases of racial discrimination. I truly support the Black Lives Matter movement and blame policymakers for not tackling the issues for decades. As it was said in the book, “Americans failed to live up to ideas with their treatment of Africans and Native Americans (Chatraw and Prior, 2019). It makes me feel various emotions at the same time when I realize how people of my African origin were treated and, in some cases, continue to be treated badly. People should understand that racial, ethnic, religious, social and any other differences should not be considered a threat, and people must be treated equally.

As a mixed-raced and spiritual person, I think that current immigration problems with people from poor countries moving to developed ones should not be considered a threat to the hosting population. People have the human right to move freely wherever they want. I also have the same attitude towards wars and weapons. People should prevent violence and not make wars as it is detrimental to the universe though bringing negative energy.

Spirituality provides me with calmness and a love for nature. As such, I cannot stand if I see how animals are treated badly. People are part of nature, and they should not consider themselves higher than any other natural creature by humiliating or punishing animals. It is stated in the book that “formal ideas, worldviews, precognitive assumptions, social, and physical dimensions passed on and inherited through others” (Chatraw and Prior, 2019). I think that culture is constantly changing, thus assuming that it is right to do things that were accepted as normal in the past, is incorrect.

People should not consider something as acceptable if only it used to be so. The most obvious example is gender roles that were dictated by patriarchy. Considering men as dominant figures, while women look after children and keep the household is an old-fashioned approach. My aunties believe in such gender roles, stating that it was always the man who should be in charge of the family. People should not put themselves into such a narrow frame and should do things how they want.

Culture is a crucial part of people’s existence, influencing their perceptions of life. Mixed race and spirituality make up my culture and the way how I view the world. Politics and social norms are challenged me every time I see the link between external events and my cultural backgrounds, such as racial discrimination, immigration, animal welfare, and other topics. I also think that culture should be changed, as things that are considered normal in the past, can be not acceptable in modern times.

There are four types of worldviews. These are: attitudinal, ideological, religious, and philosophical. Within each of these categories, we can identify examples of worldviews such as optimism, libertarianism, monotheism, and stoicism.

1. attitudinal worldviews.

An attitudinal worldview is a general disposition that someone has. It can be seen as the core features of a person’s personal character that tend to be consistent enough that they are seen as a person’s personality.

Examples of attitudinal worldviews include optimism, pessimism, compassion, thoughtfulness, and adventurousness.

The most common metaphor we use when exploring attitudinal worldviews is that of glass-half-full versus glass-half-empty. This metaphor makes us think of two people looking at the same glass of water. One person says “that glass is half full”. They are an optimist because they’re reflecting on what they have. The other person says “that glass is half empty”. They are a pessimist because they’re reflecting on what they’re missing.

In performance reviews at work, an employer will often refer to a person’s attitudinal worldview. They might talk about their work ethic, optimism, or cooperativeness as things that offer value to the team.

Similarly, in school report cards, teachers might reflect on a student’s friendliness, resilience, or growth mindset .

2. Ideological Worldviews

Ideological worldviews are worldviews based upon a person’s values and ideals. They stem from a personal idea of how the world should be structured both politically and economically.

Examples of ideological worldviews include capitalism, socialism, communism, social democracy, libertarianism, agrarianism, and totalitarianism.

These ideological worldviews might underpin the way you vote and your perception of what rights and freedoms people should have. For example, a socialist might be more focused on social equality and ensuring people get the education and healthcare they need regardless of their income.

By contrast, capitalists might be more concerned with ensuring people have the freedom to start a business and build wealth for themselves and their families.

Interestingly, there is a gender slant in ideological worldviews. If we were to look at a distribution curve, we would see that women are distributed more closely toward communitarian worldviews, while men are distributed more closely toward individualistic worldviews.

3. Religious Worldviews

Your religious worldview refers to your beliefs about god and spirituality. Even people who do not believe in a god or are unsure can be classified as having a religious worldview (agnosticism and atheism).

We can also break down religious worldviews into a few key types, including monotheism, polytheism , and atheism.

Most of the world’s major religions are monotheistic, including Christianity, Islamism, Mormonism, Catholicism, and Judaism.

People with a strong belief in an organized religion may turn to their founding texts (e.g. the Bible, Quran, etc.) to help shape their worldview. Through these texts, they develop beliefs around morality, how to live a good life, gender relations, and even what to eat and when to eat it!

4. Philosophical Worldviews

Philosophical worldviews refer to your beliefs about fundamental questions like the nature of existence, truth, knowledge, and social relations.

While philosophical worldviews are similar to, and informed by, religious and ideological worldviews, your philosophy tends to be a set of epistemological beliefs based upon critical reasoning and systematic and rational inquiry.

Philosophical worldviews are also often informed by schools of thought that emerge from academic study such as pluralism, moral relativism, Marxism, postmodernism, and intellectual conservativism.

For example, the philosophy of stoicism is based upon a school of thought that dates back to ancient Greece. This philosophical worldview teaches that humans should change the things they can and accept the things they cannot change. It encourages personal reflection on to build up wisdom, temperance, courage, and justice .

The Influence of Culture on Worldviews

While we like to think that we use personal intellect and free thought to come to our worldview, the truth is that our worldviews are very much influenced by our cultures.

For example, the vast majority of people who grow up in Islamic families tend to be Muslims in adulthood; the same goes with Christianity. While small changes occur from generation to generation, there is a clear intergeneration passing-down of worldviews.

Similarly, we can see that societies like the United States are highly individualistic whereas societies in Scandinavia are more communitarian in nature. The mere exposure to worldviews through family, friends, and media can fundamentally influence the values we consciously choose to adopt in adulthood.

This is not to say you don’t have agency to choose for yourself; rather, it is to say that on a sociological level, some worldviews have more of a foothold in some cultures than others, demonstrating the impact on your situated context on how you perceive the world around you.

What is your Worldview? – How to Determine It

Most people have a rough idea of their own worldview to start with. If you’re not able to articulate your worldview right now, you would want to start by asking yourself some questions.

These questions might include questions like:

• What words would you use to describe your personality? (Attitudinal worldviews)
• What are your core beliefs when it comes to politics and economics? (Ideological worldviews)
• What are your beliefs about God and spirituality? (Religious worldviews)

You could also do a wide range of reading to get a better sense of the world if you feel like you need to be more informed before stating what your worldview is. A common book people read is Sophie’s Choice , a fictional book about a girl who is discovering her opinions about philosophy.

Similarly, you may want to take classes on world religions and politics to get a better idea of what your fundamental belief systems are .

A person’s worldview is a deeply-held set of beliefs that are shaped by a range of factors, including family, culture, religion, and education. It can also change over time. Big events in life, such as the birth of a child, can shake a person’s fundamental belief system and make them re-think their entire worldview.

Similarly, many people don’t know what their personal worldview is. For those people, self-reflection, consultation with people they admire, and exploration of a range of philosophical and religious perspectives can help them to develop a personal belief system.

Worldview Structure and Functions Essay

World view stands for the individual’s perception of the world. World view does involve all the beliefs or philosophy on what we take the world to be in relation to ourselves. This does constitute one’s attitude, ideology and even one’s general outlook toward life.

People do ask themselves what human s are and what their purpose in life is. In discussing world views so many questions do arise. For example what is the world made up of? Does it involve assembling done by some sort of natural processes? Or is it created by a supreme being.

One’s worldviews do shape individuals a great deal. However, people’s world view is affected by several factors which include an array of inherited characteristics, other background situations and experiences, inculcated values and even habits. This therefore means that people’s worldviews do differ from one individual to the other.

One wonders what is the world and how did it originate. This question has proved quite challenging depending on one’s orientation. From what I feel, the world came to exist out of some supernatural power. This is despite the fact that there are other nations that try to explain the origin of the earth and the universe.

The world is a mass that is composed of masses of water soil and life. Scientists have come up with their suppositions on how the earth formed. According to them, it is believed that the world came into being about 4.5 billion years ago. It formed from a solidified dust and other gases when the sun was formed.

They believe that the earth was made of several ingredients including silicates and iron together with some other elements, some of which were radioactive. Since the earth was cold, some of the energy emanating from the reaction of the radioactive elements heats the earth, thereby making it warm.

The other constituents further react, creating depressions in the natural crust of the earth thereby causing natural basins of water, hills and volcanoes that led to the present terrain. There is also another scientific thought that further asserts that macro evolution played a very crucial role in the species on earth.

They believe that living things have evolved over time. This means that a horse some millions of years ago is not the same in features compared to the horse in existence now. It started with a small horse the size of a dog and changed in its stages of development into the horse that we know today.

But it is difficult to rely on this observation of changes. Some changes that can be observed do not change into totally different creatures altogether. For example I do not find it convincing claiming that reptiles could have possibly dropped their scaly skins and grew feathers to become birds.

There is another law of thermodynamics which simply stated that the development of the universe did proceed from a complete state of disorder to order and simple status to complex ones. But as is established, the second law of thermodynamics rules that there cannot be progression from disorder to order.

But still thermodynamics fall short of record of verification. For instance the law does not connect the missing links that do exist within the fossil record. If indeed macro –evolution took place over a period of billions of years on end, then the fossils of many creatures in their millions should provide evidence of some creatures evolving into other totally different creatures.

The nature of our world is composed of materiality. This means nature has tangible things which are physical in nature. The nature has process. The process includes cycles and natural systems. The materiality aspect of nature does make great sense to me. Nature is made of material physical things. For example, human beings do exist and so does water, trees, animals, rivers etc. This applies to what I see in the environment and this sends me to the point of how should we exist in nature.

This is crucial since it tells us that we are to co-exist with other things in this world. We should take ourselves to be independent. In this world we are co- inhabitants. One natural thing should not see itself as a substitution to the other. There is also a delicate balance that does exist and everything in nature has got its role and place in society.

The process part of nature cannot be ignored. Nature has got several processes taking place. These include nitrogen cycle, water cycle and many other biological cycles that do form the natural systems. These are in our environment in that should we tamper with any one of the cycles then nature suffers greatly and sometimes irreparably.

For example we do know that nature has got a wonderful way of cleaning itself for us. In fact there are many cycles that help the plants and animals to survive on earth. The cycles in essence do form micro worlds. Though the cycles do exist in the natural world, it is upon the inhabitants to provide this micro-world an opportunity to ‘live’.

Abstraction as an aspect of nature does reflect to us the existence of intangible issues such as ideas, expressions etc. Nature is not just physical; it is composed of harmonious philosophical issues that guide it. The human mind for example has perceptions, impressions and ideas. Remember these are not physical yet we cannot deny that they do exist. These do for instance bring sensations, unmeasured passions and other emotions.

Ideas on the other hand are images that get formed in the mind. These can be put into reality by implementing or setting out to concretize the image that is in the mind. For example I have had to view our backyard in a different way. This is an image that I have formed in my mind and can make it tangible if I so wish by going ahead and implementing the changes.

How our world is structured and how it functions. When we set out to investigate how our world is structured we are basically looking at the basic parts of the world is structured we are basically looking at the basic parts of the world and their attendant interrelationships. Further we look at the way those parts behave within a specific context or actual time dimension. According to me the world is structured in such a way that the past does greatly affect the present.

It is also structured in such a way that there is the unconscious reality on one side while on the other side there is invisible reality, objective reality and the visible reality. The construct of one’s perceived reality does greatly focus attention on many specific aspects of objective reality that eventually guides the way one perceives subjective reality. The world is thus viewed in what could be perceived through sciences, philosophy arts and even religion.

We human beings are not just observers to the world as some people claim. We are very important players in the universe and things here do not just happen around us. We are part of the creation. We are connected to this universe since our connectedness does give us fulfillment through things such as pursuit for pleasure, joy romance etc. on this earth.

Further we have the capacity to affect what is going through the world our actions. We come up with innovations and these innovations do have a way of helping or affecting the balance in the world. The things that join the universe like the particles of energy. We do share this and we get affected by things that happened in this universe before us and we get affected by those that will come after us.

As editors, we realise that compiling a book is not self-evident. We began with clear guidelines and a straightforward idea of how the book ought to be composed. The potential authors received the guidelines and enthusiastically began their articles. When the articles were received, however, we noticed that some of the authors had deviated from the initial directives. We then had a choice: ask the author to rewrite the piece, or creatively try to make the article fit one of the three questions we posed. Since the articles indeed were very interesting, we decided to accept them in the final form in which they were written, even if we do not necessarily agree on all the viewpoints they articulate. A number of points we did discuss with some authors in cases where we disagreed. We believe, for example, that some written statements can be considered ethnocentric in an implicit way. However, we preferred not to publish these interactions as part of the book, since most of the authors had already taken our suggestions into account anyway.

The starting point for the book is “worldviews”. For us, a worldview reflects what generations of people have experienced, prior to any conceptual notions. These pre-conscious “experiences” have been and continue to be translated into comprehensible orderings which subconsciously explain how the world ontologically is, becomes, or is experienced. An example of these core beliefs in Western culture is the idea of the substantiality of each being. From these core beliefs, interpretations are deduced on a semi-conscious level, such as the autonomy of people. Both the notion of substantiality and autonomy manifest themselves culturally in language, in institutional structures, in daily habits and cultural traditions, in rules and norms. Once a person is embedded in these basic assumptions, it will be difficult to “believe” other ordenings. Yet, in spite of deeply branched articulations and their long-lasting nature, beliefs may change over long periods of time. This is because the ongoing interaction with other cultures and experiences within one's own culture, and personal lives, constantly reshape worldviews in an uncontrollable way.
