Welcome to the PhD (Autumn Session) Admission site for the academic session 20 2 3 -2 4 for the PhD Programmes of G auhati Uiversity. 

The admission to the PhD Programmes at GU is a highly competitive process and prospective PhD applicants need to go through the Central Application Process ( CAP ). You can have an overview of the current research papers, published in reputed international journals by visiting our Research Highlight section. General Information & GURET

Prospective applicant can apply for PhD in the available disciplines. Majority of the subjects in which a student can do a PhD at GU are closely linked to one or more departments. An applicant can select a maximum of two options to appear in the eligibility examination known as GU Research Eligibility Test or simply   GURET in two disciplines.

Application fee is ₹. 20 00.00 ( two thousand) per subject (the bank transaction fees , if any are not included) .

For admission eligibility, please see conditions of eligibility .

All applicants (irrespective of any exemptions) MUST go through the CAP and pay the CAP fee after successful completion of the CAP .  Without the remittance of this fee, you will not be able appear in the GURET 20 2 3 . The fee should be paid through online payment gateway only.

GURET 20 2 3 (GU Research Eligibility Test 202 3 ) is the first screening test after the Central Application Process (CAP) for admission into the PhD Programmes of GU, unless an applicant qualifies for an exemption.

The thesis template for writing PhD theses of Gauhati University is provided by the LATEX Class file GU Thesis.cls. The page should be exactly as given in the thesis.pdf file. The arrangement of pages should follow the following order

1. The title page.

2. The “Dedication” page, if any. MUST be contained within a page.

3. The “Declaration” page with the wordings exactly as given in the thesis.pdf file (with the necessary changes as per requirements).

4. The “Certificate” page with the wordings exactly as given in the thesis.pdf file (with necessary changes as per requirements). The names of the members of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) should follow and they MUST sign against their names. For more information of RAC, please the Clause 3.7 of the PhD Regulations 2016 (Gauhati University).

How to prepare your thesis

You are advised to use the LATEX template package GUThesis.tar.gz or GUThesis.zip. This package contains the LATEX class file and other necessary package to produce your thesis. Please go through the README file contained in the package

You MAY NOT use the LATEX package, if you are NOT familiar with TEX/LATEX, but we advise you to use this. However, you can use other document preparing software such as MS Word, Adobe Pagemaker etc., but the thesis MUST conform to the style and template given in this document as the sample file.

Paper, margins, fonts, spacing, and binding

The thesis should be printed on A4 size paper of good quality. The following criteria should apply:

1. The paper size should be of A4 size.

2. The thesis should be printed on both sides of paper with font size of 12 point and spacing of minimum 1.5, with single column.

3. The margins are as follows:

• Inner : 1.5 inch
• Outer : 1.0 inch
• Top : 1.2 inch
• Bottom : 1.2 inch

4. The thesis should be soft bound with colours specified in Clause 7 of the Phd Regulations 2016 (Gauhati University).

Word limit and plagiarism clearance

A PhD thesis MUST be contained within the maximum word limit of 90,000 (ninety thousand). Under no circumstances, this should be violated. The word limit does not include

• Bibliography (i.e. References).
• The Title Page, Dedication, Declaration, Certificate, Acknowledgement, Table of Contents, Abstract, List of Figures, and List of Tables.

01. Log in through the GU email ID

02. Click on the “Examiners Panel Submission Link” provided below

03. Fill-up the necessary fields 1-4; please provide email ID of the Research Scholar right in the beginning of the form to send an acknowledgement to the Scholar ( it will be displayed as "Your e-mail address" in this first field of the form )

04. Upload the Examiners Panel (as a .pdf file) in the desired format (as mentioned in A, above).

→Please note that examiners panel format as mentioned in A (above), must be filled up digitally; hand-written forms will not be accepted. Once the form is filled up in MS word format, it must be converted into a .pdf file. 

→Moreover, the same format has been provided as a .pdf file also, as this enables users to check if any disorganization happens with the MS word file, while downloading.
