Departmental Honors and HUHC

Departmental honors is distinct from Honors College and reserved for eligible majors in the departmental major. It does not require membership or participation in Honors College.

However, Honors College strongly encourages all eligible HUHC students to pursue departmental honors in their major(s) under the respective departmental Honors Essay or Honors Research listing. Students must contact their major adviser and departmental chairperson to make arrangements for supervised independent research. This work takes place in the major department, but Honors College will count those credits toward the student's Honors College total. For the HUHC Graduate with Distinction designation, a GPA of 3.6 and completion of a departmental honors course are required.

Online Submission of Theses and Dissertations

All students must submit their Hofstra University Master’s Thesis or Doctoral Dissertation online through ProQuest’s ETD Administrator.  The Serials Office of Axinn Library is available to guide you through the submission process and assist you with any questions or problems you may have.

Your thesis or dissertation must be completely finalized before submitting.  This means that all editing is completed, the manuscript has been accepted by the department, and all required signatures are included on the title page.  Specifics about formatting, title page requirement, and/or copyright page requirements (typically for dissertation students only) must be obtained from the particular department. The Serials Department of Axinn library does not have this information.

Preparing your Manuscript for Online Submission

Once your thesis or dissertation is completely finalized, you will need to incorporate the signed title page into the manuscript and convert the entire thesis/dissertation into a PDF. Step-by-step instructions are here .

Online Submission

Once your manuscript has been converted into a PDF with the signed title page,

  • Go to https://www.etdadmin.com/createaccount?siteId=19
  • Complete the form to create a new student account

You will be guided through the steps of submitting your manuscript in PDF format for digital publishing. If you are unable to complete the process in one sitting, you can save your information at any time and continue your submission later.  FAQs are included throughout the site.  If you wish to consult the FAQs before beginning the process, you can do so here .

A few notes about the submission process:

  • Copyright is optional for both theses and dissertations.  While there are advantages to registering your manuscript with the U.S. Copyright Office (such as the ability of the author to collect statutory damages in case of a successful infringement lawsuit), it is important to understand that a student's dissertation or thesis is protected by copyright as soon as is "fixed in a tangible medium of expression" such as on paper or saved electronically. More information about the advantages of registering with the U.S. Copyright Office is available in the resource " Copyright and Your Dissertation: Ownership, Fair Use, and Your Rights and Responsibilities " by Kenneth Crews.  Students wishing to register their thesis or dissertation for copyright can do so through the ETD system during submission, or they can submit directly at the U.S. Copyright Office .  There is a charge.
  • The library no longer binds print copies nor does it require that a microfilm copy be sent to us.  If you wish to have bound copies, you can order them directly from the ETD Administrator submission system or you can use a printing/binding service such as Staples or Office Depot.
  • The ETD system defaults to having the dissertation and thesis metadata discoverable via Google and Google Scholar. With the move toward open access for scholarly materials, university libraries are making dissertation metadata available by default. If you would like to remove your ProQuest-provided metadata from Google and Google Scholar, you can do so by contacting ProQuest at 1-800-521-0600.

Once your manuscript is submitted, the Serials Department of the Axinn Library will review your submission and contact you via email.  If you do not hear from us or have any questions about submitting your thesis or dissertation, feel free to contact Kristine Pries at 516-463-6439, [email protected] , or Sally Glasser at [email protected] . You can also contact ETD Technical Support at 877-408-5027.  And last but not least...

Congratulations on completing your thesis or dissertation!!

Students majoring in Psychology at Hofstra are choosing an area of study that can be applied to a vast variety of fields, including advertising, business, drama, education, journalism, law, and technology. Hofstra can also set you on the path to a career as a counselor or a medical professional. You'll learn skills required for success in a variety of health service and administrative professions.

Our faculty's proficiencies and expertise include neuroscience, social psychology, developmental psychology, health psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, school psychology, clinical psychology, and many other areas.

Career opportunities for psychology majors vary, depending on the industry and your role. In the New York region, graduates with a bachelor's degree in psychology earned an average annual salary of $52,526, and job growth for this major is projected to increase 10.6% by 2026, according to New York area labor market data retrieved in July 2018 by Burning Glass Technologies.

Her artistic journey at Hofstra has been eclectic and interdisciplinary

At Hofstra University, there are two Psychology degrees to consider:

The BA in Psychology prepares you for graduate study in psychology or a career in human service professions and behavioral research (such as in a hospital or government setting). The degree is also appropriate if you are considering work or graduate study in a wide range of fields outside of psychology, including business, education, health, law, and technology. Psychology BA students are taught to think critically about truth claims involving behavior and to reason and communicate scientifically.

The BS in Psychology is more appropriate if you are planning post-graduate studies in medicine or other health-related professions. It provides a solid background in basic biomedical sciences as well as in behavioral and cognitive sciences.

Up-to-date information about required classes and more is available in the Hofstra Bulletin.

Both degrees’ strengths are in research sequence, where students learn methods and statistical skills that are transferable to a variety of careers and occupations. The research courses are capped at smaller numbers to allow faculty to work closely with students and provide an intimate class setting.

Unlike other schools, Hofstra requires an additional research seminar that helps build advanced skills and prepares students for graduate school in psychology or other career paths.

Hofstra also offers a minor in psychology , and a wide range of graduate degrees including:

  • MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology
  • PhD in Applied Organizational Psychology
  • PhD in Clinical Psychology
  • PsyD in School-Community Psychology

What You'll Learn

Student in Class

You will learn the methods, theories, and research pertaining to diverse areas of psychology such as cognitive science (including perception, cognitive psychology, and behavioral neuroscience), child development, human and animal learning, abnormal psychology, and social psychology. Along with a grounding in core areas, you may take classes in specific applied areas such as health psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, and psychology and the law.

One of the strengths of Hofstra University’s program is the research sequence that teaches methods and statistical skills that are wide-ranging and can suit a variety of occupations.

Serving on the faculty are approximately 30 full-time psychologists, all of whom have doctoral degrees as well as research interests covering more than 20 specializations. With focuses like Clinical Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Psychopathology, School Psychology, and more, the faculty can help you find a focus on the track you choose.

Getting real-world experience from an internship, field research with a distinguished professor, or a study abroad program is a critical part of your preparation for life after college. National studies show that employers look very favorably on college graduates who have internships as part of their undergraduate experience.

Beyond that, we understand that internships and other experiential learning programs give students a chance to apply what they've learned, help them discover what they love to do, and allow them to make better-informed choices about their future. The department is also home to the undergraduate Psychology Club, which brings in guest speakers, hosts career events, and provides volunteer opportunities to students.

Additionally, many students serve as research assistants with faculty and graduate students, and top students complete honors theses in which they conduct original research. The Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center, located on Hofstra’s campus, is a multidisciplinary clinical service center. One of its clinics, the Psychological Evaluation Research and Counseling Clinic, is one such place where undergraduate students assist with research.

She discusses how Hofstra opened up the doors to these opportunities.
