Once your profile is open, click  More below your name, description, and location. This will open a drop-down menu where you can select Build a resume .

LinkedIn will allow you to either upload a resume you’ve already created or build one from your profile. Click Create from profile to start generating your resume. This is when LinkedIn asks for the title of the job that you’re applying for, so that it can suggest relevant keywords. Type the job title and click Apply .

You’ll now see a preview of your LinkedIn-generated resume. The right pane will show information on matching keywords found in your profile and suggested keywords that you could consider including. In the left pane, you’ll see a pencil icon next to each section in your resume. Just click the pencil to start editing. Most people would be looking for some brevity to make the resume fit on one page, which is fairly easy.

Step #3: Scroll down and click the Add Featured link.

Step #4: If you don't see the “ Featured” section , it might be disabled. If that’s the case, scroll to the top of your profile and select “ Add profile section” , then “ Recommended” , and then “ Add featured”, and finally "Add Media" .

Step #5: Otherwise, if your Featured section is enabled, click Add Favorites or the plus icon , and select Media from the drop-down menu.

Step #6: In the file upload window that appears, select the resume document you want to upload and click Open.

Step #7: A preview of the document will pop up, as well as fields to title and describe your resume. Only the title is required.

Step #8: After filling in the title and description, click Save .

If you’re having problems converting your LinkedIn profile to a resume, there are two things you can do:

  • Make sure your LinkedIn is filled with enough content.  Remember that an empty profile makes for an equally empty resume. Fill your LinkedIn profile with at least 200 words. For best results, you should have at least the About, Experience, and Education sections of your profile filled with content. The more the merrier.
  • Make sure your profile is not set to private.  Our tool needs to have the ability to access your LinkedIn profile. If your profile is set to private, only your connections can view it. Set your profile to public and try importing your LinkedIn profile again.
  • Make sure that your profile is more than 30 days old.  Sometimes it takes a few days for Kickresume to access your profile. While this usually takes less than the aforementioned 30 days, this time period gives us a bit of an overhead when diagnosing problems related to LinkedIn import.

Yeah, not many people know about this option. It’s such a hidden tool, you’d think LinkedIn’s resume builder was intentionally hidden in shame. 

And perhaps that’s the case, as there are a few downsides to using it. 

We've tested it and will show you everything you need to know about the LinkedIn resume builder, its strengths and weaknesses, and alternatives.

What is a LinkedIn resume builder?

The LinkedIn resume builder is a free web-tool that allows you to either import an existing resume or generate a new resume from your LinkedIn profile.

It populates a simple resume template which can be easily edited without impacting your profile. You're also able to download the finished resume as a PDF. 

So, how can you create a resume there exactly? Let's have a look!

Before you can begin using the LinkedIn resume builder, you first need to create and log in into your LinkedIn account. Once you have done that, you can continue with the following steps: 

  • Click the Me icon at the upper corner of your LinkedIn profile page.
  • Select the More button beneath your name and contact information.
  • Upload or create resume from profile.

That’s it, simple right?

I've tried it myself too and here’s what it spat out:

So, what do we think? Is this a resume that will get you hired?

Not quite. There are two main problems that one can spot immediately:

  • Template. With your resume, you want to stand out. However, the LinkedIn resume template is pretty boring. Plus it contains a lot of white space , forcing you to write sparingly if you don't want to go over one page.
  • Content. LinkedIn profiles and resumes have different functions. You'll not be getting a great resume by merely clicking the " Create from profile " button.

If you want better results, you're going to have to tweak your LinkedIn resume — heavily.

Believe me, you really don't want to just copy and paste your LinkedIn profile into a resume and call it a go. We'll go over why in the chapters below. 

LinkedIn resume too bland?

Pick a template with personality and get hired.

Although the LinkedIn’s resume builder is a simple and easy to use tool, it comes with many limitations.

For starters, a good LinkedIn profile rarely translates into a good resume. Perhaps because both are meant to perform different roles.

Here are 5 ways in which a LinkedIn profile differs from a resume: 

  • Less formal: Although still professional, your LinkedIn profile should be casual. 
  • Includes a profile picture : Including a resume photo in most western countries is a no-no. However, uploading a professional portrait picture on your LinkedIn profile is advised.
  • Longer and more descriptive : For sake of brevity a resume’s length is kept between one and two pages long. Such limitations are not the norm on a LinkedIn profile.
  • Not tailored to individual jobs : Usually it's recommended to tailor a resume to every job application. On the other hand, this is not something you do with your LinkedIn profile. That one you just keep relevant to your field. 
  • Written in 1st person instead of 3rd : Unlike a resume, you can use “I” and other personal pronouns such as "me, my, we, our,"  etc.

As you can see, these differences are not so small and will definitely complicate things when converting your LinkedIn profile into a LinkedIn resume. 

Luckily, there's a better way.

Some resumes can distinguish an applicant at a glance.

They ooze personality, not just because of how they're written, but because of how they're formatted and how they look. 

Unfortunately, this is something that is pretty much impossible to pull off with the LinkedIn resume builder.  You just don't have the options. 

In fact, I believe you would be better off creating a resume via Microsoft Word or Google Docs where you at least have some liberty to personalize it. 

But we know how hard and time consuming these programs can be.

But if you want a document that you can extensively format and quickly edit, or that looks attractive, avoid it. Or use a platform that enables you to pull data from your LinkedIn profile and edit it in a separate resume builder (hint, hint — Kickresume 😉 ).

If you decide to create your resume via LinkedIn or with importing your LinkedIn data into a dedicated resume builder, here's how to edit it:

  • Keep it short: Even though your LinkedIn profile allows you to have a whole career history, on your resume, you typically focus on specific aspects and you’re limited by a number of pages. Try to keep it short and relevant, don't go over 2 pages.
  • Change the tone: A resume is a formal document and your tone should reflect that. Eliminate colloquial phrasings and avoid using first person pronouns — heck, you can even opt to remove all personal pronouns.  
  • Edit your summary: Majority of LinkedIn summaries are far too long for a resume. Keep your profile 2-5 bullet points long, 3 being the sweet spot. 
  • Reduce the skills section: Unlike a LinkedIn profile, a resume doesn't need the 30 skills you added for SEO purposes. Jot down only the most relevant ones. 3-6 should be more then enough. 
  • Change your keyword optimization: While a LinkedIn profile uses keywords that speak the language of a career field, a resume should speak with the language of the prospect job or company.

In conclusion, although the LinkedIn’s resume builder can be great way to jump-start the resume writing process, it's really not an ideal way to create an attention grabbing resume.

Résumé gaps don't have to kill your job search — here's what to say about them

When Vicki Salemi's father got sick, she cut back on her work as a freelance writer to spend time with him.

After he eventually died in late 2012, she was devastated.

"He was my best friend," Salemi told Business Insider.

As she tried to recover, she faced another problem: There was a hole in her résumé that made clear she hadn't been working for a while.

So Salemi, now a career expert for Monster, added a line to her CV to show that the monthslong gap existed for good reason. She didn't want anyone to wonder what she'd been up to — or question it and risk derailing her momentum in an interview she might otherwise be crushing.

"I didn't want to get asked about it because I was knee-deep in grief," she said.

Salemi isn't alone in having a résumé where the end of one job doesn't align neatly with the start of the next. Between layoffs , gig work, and the economic and social quagmire of the pandemic, many workers have blank spots in their formal work history . But that doesn't have to be a dealbreaker when it comes to finding another role .

The pandemic poked holes in work

The trick to dealing with résumé gaps is to have an explanation, career experts told BI. Sometimes, it's best to put the reason on the résumé itself, Salemi said. One bright spot for her after her father died was that she ultimately got the job.

"I remember when I had that phone interview with my future boss, she was like, 'Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that,'" Salemi said. "She just addressed it, acknowledged it, and then moved right on."

Julia Toothacre, chief career strategist at ResumeTemplates.com , told BI that her advice on résumé gaps is far different from what she would have said a decade ago. Breaks in work experience are often just a thing now and don't necessarily have to be papered over.

That's because the pandemic threw so many people out of work and disrupted so much about the labor force that everything got a bit messy. In her experience, Toothacre said, most people doing the hiring are more sympathetic to the vagaries of the job market now.

"Any recruiter or hiring manager worth anything understands what's been going on in the world of work. It does not matter what sector you're in," she said.

It's OK to say you were laid off

Toothacre said that, unlike in the past, it's generally not as detrimental to be up front about a work drought on a résumé. That doesn't mean some people in charge of hiring won't ding applicants for it. But she said that itself can be a useful red flag for job seekers.

"If that's a situation that you're in, you don't want to work for that person anyway," Toothacre said.

She recommends that if you were laid off, note that on your résumé. Or, she said, you could add a section that talks about being off work for personal reasons like having to care for someone.

Depending on the grounds for the break, it can be wise to be somewhat circumspect, she said. If you were off because of a protracted illness, it might be smart not to go too deep into it. Even though employers shouldn't discriminate against people for, say, having young kids who need attention, it can happen.

Yet Toothacre said the decision by LinkedIn to let users add a career break to their profile has helped normalize the idea that not all formal work unfolds without interruption.

Salemi, from Monster, said in her experience more job seekers have gaps than don't. And many people tend to overthink how to address them, she said. Her advice is to be prepared to talk about the breaks — and use that explanation to move the conversation forward.

Even for workers who were fired, they could say something like, "I was the last one in, first one out," Salemi said. Then comes the pivot. One example she offered: "But the past three months really gave me clarity for this job I'm pursuing because my strengths are in sales," she said.

Don't dwell on the gap

Salemi said the key is to address the hiatus so an interviewer doesn't get stuck on it. For those who might have done something like get additional education, build their skills, or work on a side hustle, it can be OK or even beneficial to talk about it, she said.

There are other ways job seekers can downplay fallow spots in their formal work history. One is to perhaps not list start dates and end dates using months. Instead, Salemi said, consider using only years.

Another technique is to position the skills up top instead of first listing work history in reverse chronological order. That can help a busy recruiter focus on what's most important, Lee Woodrow, owner and principal consultant at Bigger Fish Executive Branding, previously told BI.

Salemi said it's no surprise that having too many gaps can be a problem. But for most breaks, explain it and move on. If possible, do it in a single sentence with two parts. The first portion is why the gap exists, and the second is why you're the best person for the job, she said.

"Especially if you're a top candidate, it's not necessarily a liability for you," Salemi said.

The 25% rule is a well-rounded approach designed to drive quality connections, engagement and conversions. While all sectors are critical to the overall strategy, I would argue that educational posts hold the most weight. It’s been shown that people are more motivated to click the "follow" button if they feel entertained or educated by an account . Not to mention that those you network with often look for how you approach data, stay ahead of trends and futurecast.

Make sure you're always learning and engaging with your industry. Why? Because being in the know will allow for more opportunities to move out of congested arenas and into uncharted ones. So, pick your passion, define your niche and become the go-to expert in this department.

Collect, Collaborate And Create Your Mark

As the old saying goes, “Two heads are better than one.” This is absolutely true when it comes to thought leadership and innovation. Below are some of the best ways to educate, create and collaborate alongside your industry while making your own mark.

Attend Conferences And Webinars

Attending industry-specific events will keep you up to date with new data, discoveries and trends. You’ll hear how the subject matter is currently integrated within the industry, providing a sound launching pad for thinking outside the box. Use your own experiences and expertise to brainstorm fresh ways to advance this information. Being in the room and having these conversations is a sure way to ignite sparks.

Learn From Your Competitors

I truly believe there’s room for everyone, and no industry is ever too saturated. Why? Because we all have unique perspectives, talents and interpretations to bring to the table. I see far too many professionals shy away from competitors because they feel intimidated or threatened by them. Instead, see this as an opportunity to collaborate. What’s your competition doing that’s innovative? What’s working and what isn’t? How can you use this feedback as a blueprint for your own emerging ideas? Reimagining concepts and putting them into action is what it’s all about.

Subscribe To Relevant Sources

Take a look at what individuals and organizations are currently fan-favorite sources in your industry, and then subscribe. Figure out what attributes they possess that make them so popular. How do they manage their reputation? What content does their community seem to crave? Where do they generate the most engagement? Learn from their lead. Don't forget to create your Google Alerts hit list and add those same individuals and organizations to your alerts, allowing you to be in the know before information hits social media.

Look To LinkedIn

The key to effective positioning will always be understanding the psyche of your audience, which is why I love turning to LinkedIn for a direct line to consumer feedback. As the leading professional network (with over 1 billion members globally), LinkedIn is a gold mine for quality feedback, connections and information. Make it a habit to use this growth potential at your fingertips. Conduct polls, engage in groups and comment on threads to intentionally network and gain new insights.

Bonus: LinkedIn also can help you get found in search engine results. Your LinkedIn posts, and sometimes even threads about a particular topic, may be indexed by Google. This is excellent exposure for further establishing a credible digital footprint within your industry.

Innovate, Create And Then Try Again

Experimentation is education in motion. It’s one thing to listen to information; it’s a whole other to apply it. Be the one who takes action based on what you’ve learned. This leadership initiative is often neglected because, as humans, we fear looking foolish or “failing.” But let’s be honest: Some of the most impactful inventions of all time came from perceived failures. Use this as a permission slip to scratch the word “failure” from your vocabulary. The greatest leaders are the ones who get messy and make moves. Make yours.
