Emerging Trends in Business Innovation

The role of big data and analytics in strategic decision-making.

In the realm of business innovation, the utilization of big data and analytics has become a cornerstone for companies aiming to maintain a competitive edge. It helps companies make informed decisions by providing insights into consumer behavior, market trends, and business performance. An MBA focusing on Data Analytics equips you with the necessary skills to decode vast amounts of data and enhance decision-making processes.

Leveraging big data analytics involves the systematic collection, examination, and analysis of large datasets to uncover hidden patterns, correlations, and insights. This practice is pivotal in aiding strategic decision-making , as it allows for a more nuanced understanding of the market and customer needs. Consider the following points when exploring this thesis topic:

  • The integration of data analytics into organizational culture and decision-making frameworks.
  • Methods for ensuring data quality and integrity in analytics.
  • The ethical considerations surrounding the use of consumer data.

By delving into these areas, you can contribute to the evolving landscape of business strategy and innovation, where data-driven decisions are increasingly becoming the norm.

Sustainable Business Models and Circular Economy

As you delve into the realm of sustainable business models, you'll encounter the transformative concept of the circular economy (CE). Unlike traditional linear economies reliant on 'take-make-dispose' patterns, CE emphasizes the importance of resource efficiency and the regeneration of products and materials. One way to reduce dependency on finite resources is through CE's innovative business models . These models are designed to be restorative by intention, aiming to keep products, components, and materials at their highest utility and value at all times.

The five Business Models for the Circular Economy, as identified by Lacy et al. (2014), provide a framework for MBA graduates to explore and innovate within this space. These models include:

  • Design for longevity
  • Maintain, share, and lease
  • Reuse and redistribute
  • Refurbish and remanufacture
  • Recycle and upcycle

By integrating these models into your thesis, you can contribute to a body of knowledge that not only advances sustainable business practices but also addresses global challenges such as climate change and resource scarcity. Your research could pave the way for organizations to transition from a linear to a circular approach, ultimately leading to a more sustainable and resilient economy.

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Business Processes

As you delve into the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), it's essential to recognize its transformative power in business processes. AI technology promises significant benefits , including enhanced efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making capabilities. By automating routine tasks, AI frees up human talent for more complex and creative work, fostering an environment of innovation and strategic growth.

The integration of AI into business operations is not without its challenges. It requires a careful balance between leveraging technology and maintaining human oversight. To navigate this landscape, consider the following points:

  • Understanding the capabilities and limitations of AI in your industry.
  • Developing strategies to manage the ethical implications of data use and automation.
  • Ensuring that your workforce is equipped with the skills to work alongside AI.

By addressing these considerations, you position yourself at the forefront of business innovation , ready to harness the full potential of AI. Remember, the successful implementation of AI in business processes is not just about the technology itself, but also about the cultural and organizational shifts that accompany it.

By adopting a multi-theoretical lens, you can better understand and influence the mechanisms that drive successful organizational change. Embrace the challenge, and you'll be well on your way to steering your organization towards a future of innovation and growth.

Cultivating a Culture of Continuous Improvement

In your quest to foster a culture of continuous improvement within an organization, it is essential to understand that such efforts can only flourish when they become an integral part of the organizational ethos - "the way we do things around here" . Important Notes:

As a student of business studies looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing business theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.

The field of business is vast and interrelated to so many other academic disciplines like  civil engineering ,  construction ,  law , and even  healthcare . That is why creating a business dissertation topic that is articular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field is imperative.

We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic; it is the basis of your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, and there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in  writing your dissertation , as you may end up in a cycle of rejection at the very initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

While developing a research topic, keeping our advice in mind will allow you to pick one of the best business dissertation topics that fulfils your requirement of writing a research paper and add to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalising your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Take a look at some of our sample business dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

As aspiring scholars seek to delve into MBA thesis topics in management, the process of identifying the perfect research subject can be daunting. However, in this comprehensive guide, we shall uncover the best practices and strategies to assist you in your MBA in research topic selection criteria, ensuring your journey is both insightful and rewarding.

Key factors and considerations that influence the selection of a research topic

The selection of a research topic for an MBA thesis in management within the field of research methodology is a crucial decision that requires careful consideration of several key factors. Firstly, it is essential to choose a topic that aligns with your interests, expertise, and career goals, as this will ensure sustained motivation and dedication throughout the research process. Secondly, the topic should be relevant and timely, addressing current issues or gaps in the field of management to contribute meaningful insights to the academic and business communities. Additionally, the feasibility of conducting the research, availability of data, and access to resources and literature must be taken into account. The scope of the research should be realistic and manageable, given the time constraints of an MBA program. Moreover, students must consider the potential impact of their research, aiming to make a practical and valuable contribution to the business world. Lastly, seeking guidance from faculty advisors and conducting a thorough literature review are essential steps to refine and validate the research topic.

At mbathesis, our company is committed to helping students navigate the challenging process of selecting a research topic for their MBA thesis in management. Selecting a compelling research topic for PhD candidates in the realm of business administration requires a nuanced approach. Beyond the generic advice, prospective scholars can delve into their personal experiences and career aspirations, reflecting on industry challenges that resonate with them deeply. Immersing themselves in relevant industry events, discussions, and emerging trends can provide firsthand insight. To craft a distinct niche, candidates should not just skim the literature but critically analyze it, identifying unexplored intersections and unresolved contradictions that align with their expertise. Collaborating with potential advisors and peers can offer valuable perspectives on the viability of research directions, aiding in the formulation of research questions that blend academic rigour with real-world applicability. Balancing passion with pragmatic evaluation, this approach ensures that the chosen research path not only resonates with their MBA pursuits but also advances the field in a tangible and sustainable manner.

Leveraging online databases, academic journals, and other digital resources effectively

Aspiring researchers, particularly in the MBA field, can harness the power of online databases to uncover emerging research trends and pertinent gaps systematically. To begin, they can target databases like ProQuest, JSTOR, and EBSCOhost, renowned for housing a plethora of academic journals, articles, and business-related resources. Starting with specific keywords aligned with their interests—such as "MBA leadership trends" or "business sustainability strategies"—researchers can initiate focused searches. Utilizing advanced search filters within these databases, like refining results by publication date, authorship, and keywords, can further streamline the process.

Next, delving into the abstracts and introductions of relevant articles can provide a snapshot of prevailing academic discussions and ongoing research discourse. By tracing citation networks and identifying frequently cited papers, researchers can pinpoint seminal works and influential research domains. Participating in online academic communities, LinkedIn groups, or specialized forums can facilitate direct interactions with field experts, enriching understanding of emerging trends and potential research gaps.

To illustrate, let's consider ProQuest as an example. Initiating a search using terms like "MBA innovation strategies" and filtering results for the past five years could yield recent and pertinent articles. By reading abstracts and introductions, researchers can grasp the evolving landscape. Exploring citation patterns might reveal critical studies. Engaging in platforms like LinkedIn groups focused on business research can foster dialogues with scholars actively shaping the field. By skillfully amalgamating these tactics and resources, aspiring researchers can sculpt research topics that seamlessly blend with the contemporary MBA landscape, ensuring the relevance and impact of their contributions.

Our company, mbathesis, can significantly assist aspiring researchers in this process. With our comprehensive database of academic resources, including journals, articles, and conference papers, researchers can access a vast repository of up-to-date information. Our advanced search algorithms and filtering options make it easy to find relevant studies quickly. Moreover, mbathesis provides a collaborative platform for researchers to connect with each other, fostering knowledge exchange and networking opportunities within the academic community. Through our services, researchers can efficiently navigate the digital realm of scholarly information, enabling them to identify emerging research trends and gaps, ultimately aiding in the selection of a research topic that aligns with the current academic landscape.

Role of conducting a thorough SWOT analysis in the topic selection process

Conducting a thorough SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis plays a critical role in the topic selection process for research methodology. By systematically evaluating the internal and external factors related to the chosen research subject, researchers can gain valuable insights into its viability and potential impact.

Strengths: Identifying the strengths of the research subject allows researchers to recognize the positive aspects that make it a promising area of investigation. This may include available resources, existing expertise, and supportive infrastructure that can facilitate the research process.

Weaknesses: Assessing the weaknesses helps researchers acknowledge the limitations and challenges associated with the chosen topic. Understanding these limitations early on enables them to plan strategies to overcome potential obstacles and address shortcomings effectively.

Opportunities: Identifying opportunities within the research subject can highlight potential areas for growth and development. Researchers can leverage these opportunities to add novel dimensions to their study, explore uncharted territories, or capitalize on emerging trends.

Threats: Analyzing potential threats allows researchers to be aware of external factors that could hinder their progress or impact the validity of their findings. By addressing these threats proactively, researchers can enhance the reliability and credibility of their research outcomes.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, the process of topic selection in research methodology can be likened to navigating a complex maze, requiring researchers to adopt best practices and employ effective strategies to find their way to success. Aspiring scholars seeking MBA thesis topics in management must navigate through the vast landscape of academic resources, and our company, mbathesis, serves as the ultimate guide on this scholarly journey. With our comprehensive database, advanced search algorithms, and collaborative platform, mbathesis empowers researchers to identify emerging trends and relevant gaps in their fields, aligning their chosen research subjects with the current academic landscape. Thanks for finally talking about MBA Dissertation Topics and Liked it, As an MBA student I found this post really interesting and valuable as I am about to start writing my own MBA dissertation Q1 2015. Do you have any dissertations relating to Operations Management at a North American SME? Thanks Ivan.

Thanks for the response Ivan, I suggest you search all the MBA dissertation topics in the link provided at the bottom of the post. I’m sure you will find a dissertation topic relating to your MBA studies. Let me know.

Thanks, Steve

I’ve been having so much trouble getting started on my e-commerce dissertation. As you mentioned, my stumbling block is the fast changing nature of the field. But it’s growing so fast that I know it’s a good area to get into. I’m taking a look at your topics now, hopefully it can get me started!

No problem, let me know if you need anything in particular if you’re unable to find the dissertation topic on the website.

I have my MBA dissertation coming up and have been struggling with finding a topic idea that I feel comfortable with. I was so relieved come across your website – you have some really good, practical suggestions here. I enjoy writing, so have no problem with that part. My big fear is correctly citing my sources after I’ve written the dissertation. Do you have any suggestions or good sites I could go to help with that?

Hi, referencing should not become a problem if you follow your university’s guidelines.mthis blog contains posts on referencing and citing the work of others appropriately. Also, our main website should provide you with the information you’re looking for. Good luck.

This is an excellent MBA sample dissertation. I’m in accounting, and have to say that whoever wrote this really knows their stuff. I appreciate the fact that you post examples so those of us who are flailing around trying to decide how to go about this can benefit. I’m grateful to the friend who directed me here. Thanks for providing a great service.

Steve- I left Ireland in September 2008 for the UK and my Masters dissertation in Manchester was on the Global Financial Crisis a history showing the role of US, Japan, The Asian Tigers and leading to the demise of major economics post 2008, I’ve created a timeline of events (up to mid-2013) at present but have information up to date. This will give a chronological history of UK, EU, US events 2008 to date. It will be published early 2015. It is the US people have had to pay dearly for the toxic assets bought by Nama. Banks in Ireland are not lending, nor are they in the UK. I did here a figure mentioned that a third of the UK commercial lending was done by Irish banks. How can Nama be increasing lending when a lot of toxic assets have simply been “parked” by banks to be released shortly at knock-down prices onto the market?

Thanks so much for all this work! I’m blown away by the level of detail you’ve gone into. On some other sites I’ve looked at the content really only skims the surface and doesn’t take the reader in depth with a chance to really develop ideas and give a helping hand regarding this type of content. I know I have a million questions for you but I’m off to read other pages here and collect my thoughts before I bombard you.

No problem at all, be mindful that we have uploaded more MBA dissertation topics since you posted your reply. Hopefully, there are more titles that will interest you further.

Hi Kelly – This is one of my favorite quotes.

Sir I am looking for a topic related to supply chain management (SCM) and organization citizenship (OCB). Can you please help me.

Hi Tezana – Please check the MBA Dissertation Titles we have. The links are provided above.

The article is interesting. When you’re preparing to write your MBA, you’re embraced a task of mind boggling tremendous. It can take a very long time to get your sources all together, your thoughts prepared, and your draft read and edit once more. That is about the length of a novel at the longest. Obviously, this differs by university or college. Dissertation creation is a battle at any stage, and we realize that it’s hard for somebody who’s never done it. A dissertation is long, yet not all that long that you have enough time to make up a fresh out of the box better approach for deciphering life, the universe, and everything.

Please how vast is the accounting option as a component or subject in MBA degree? I asked because I have some level of experience in account and would like to develop it more.

I need a swift reply please so I can decide on the track to follow.

I’m glad you liked the post. We will be adding more MBA Dissertation Topics soon. Keep an eye out for them.

FAQs on Topics & Research Titles for MBA Dissertations & Thesis Projects

  • What makes a good MBA research title?

Answer: A good MBA research title should be clear, concise, and specific. It should indicate the focus of your research and include key terms that reflect the scope and objectives of your study. A well-crafted title can attract interest and give readers an immediate understanding of the topic.

  • Can I collaborate with businesses or external organizations for my MBA project?

Answer: Yes, collaborating with businesses or external organizations can enhance the practical relevance of your thesis or dissertation and provide access to valuable data and insights. Many MBA programs encourage or even facilitate such partnerships. However, ensure you have formal agreements in place to handle data confidentiality and project expectations.

  • How important is originality in MBA research projects?

Answer: Originality is important as it demonstrates your ability to contribute new insights or approaches to the field. While it’s not always necessary to choose a completely unexplored topic, adding a unique perspective or challenging existing assumptions can significantly enhance the value of your research.

  • What are common pitfalls in selecting MBA dissertation project topics?

Answer: Common pitfalls include choosing a topic that is too broad, too narrow, or not well-defined. Another pitfall is selecting a topic with limited data availability or that is not supported by sufficient resources at your institution. • How can I ensure my dissertation research topic is relevant to current business practices?

Answer: Stay updated with the latest business journals, attend industry conferences, and follow thought leaders on social media. Choose a topic that addresses current challenges or trends in your field of interest. Consulting with industry professionals during the topic selection phase can also ensure that your research is aligned with real-world needs.

  • What resources are recommended for researching MBA thesis or dissertation topics?

Answer: Utilize academic journals, business reports, case studies, and industry publications. Online databases like JSTOR, Business Source Complete, and Google Scholar can provide access to scholarly articles. Additionally, your university’s library and your advisors are valuable resources for finding relevant literature and data.

“MBS Outstanding Thesis” – The Best Final Papers of 2021

February 25, 2022

The MBS Outstanding Theses 2021 of Munich Business School lying side by side on a table

Last year, four further theses produced by our MBS graduates were selected for inclusion in ‘ MBS Outstanding Thesis’, a series of working papers. This blog article introduces the outstanding final papers in 2021.

Whether at bachelor’s or master’s level, a thesis is more than just the final step towards completing a degree: it can also make a significant intellectual contribution to academic and societal discourse. Students at Munich Business School are no exception, conducting high-level research as part of their theses. However, given that it is not usually possible to have these papers published in academic journals, Munich Business School’s Prof. Dr. Bartholomae launched a series of working papers entitled ‘MBS Outstanding Thesis’. In the fall of 2020, the first installment in the series recognized and published the master’s thesis of MBA graduate Jiaojiao Zhao .

At the start of the 2021/22 academic year, MBS asked its professors to put forward exceptional theses for inclusion in the series. Submissions not only required excellent grades but also had to exhibit innovative approaches and methods and provide novel insights. One bachelor’s and three master’s theses stood out in particular and have been awarded the designation “MBS Outstanding Thesis”. The authors hail from Europe, Asia and South America – the topics they covered are similarly diverse and as broad-based as the university’s curriculum.

Here’s an introduction to the four outstanding theses:

The Implementation of Socially Sustainable Supply Chains in the German Natural Stone Industry Using the Example of Trade with India

In her bachelor’s thesis, Eva Maria Fröhlich investigated the social sustainability of supply chains in one of the few industries for which the recently passed Supply Chain Act does not apply. Focusing on the trade with India and using qualitative research methods, the author examined which concrete criteria and implementation strategies of social sustainability are relevant and currently beeing applied in the natural stone industry. She established the importance of strengthening the implementation of cooperative strategies and which criteria should be taken into account beyond the avoidance of child labor. Furthermore, she identified which communication strategies can be used to raise awareness among end customers and which legislative measures could provide essential support for socially sustainable supply chains. Case Study Concept for Microsoft to Support the Digital Transformation in German SMEs

Mauritius Freuding, who graduated from the master’s program in International Business , researched the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises in the field of cloud computing. During his analysis of cloud computing, he also found ways to make this complex topic comprehensible to people who are not domain experts. In addition, Freuding developed a method of outlining the benefits of cloud computing for small and medium-sized enterprises. Microsoft has since adopted Freuding’s method as its standard procedure for adapting cloud computing solutions to the needs of SMEs – a ringing endorsement of his innovative approach. Esports Sponsorship Effectiveness on Brand Association and Purchase Intent

Yi-Chun Chen focused on this barely researched but highly topical field for her thesis as part of the MBA International Management program (the former name of the MBA program at MBS, renamed MBA General Management in 2019). She surveyed almost 400 Taiwanese gamers and analyzed the data she collected using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings? Attitudes towards the sponsor, the suitability of the event-sponsor fit, and the sponsor’s involvement in activities had a significant influence on gamers’ association with the brand and their intention to purchase a product from the sponsor. Brand association also plays an important role in forecasting purchase intention. Based on these insights, Chen also developed a number of highly instructive recommendations for both marketing professionals and further research. Click here to read the full paper.

The Emergence of Green Bonds as Innovative Financial Instruments

For his final paper in the MBA General Management program , Nicolas Penuela carried out a bibliometric analysis of the rise of green bonds as innovative financial instruments. He examined a dataset of 98 academic articles on green bonds published between 2008 and 2020. Using a qualitative filtration process, the MBA graduate initially analyzed controversial topics cited most frequently in the articles. Then, using a piece of software called Biblioshiny , he identified trends and gaps in green bonds research and divided his findings into three chronological phases, which allowed him to demonstrate how published articles developed over time. Finally, Penuela put forward a dynamic template for analyzing journal articles to help (future) academics to familiarize themselves with this new yet rarely used research discipline. This highly innovative topic is currently gaining considerable momentum in the field of sustainability. Click here to read the full paper.

Munich Business School would like to congratulate its graduates on these outstanding pieces of work! An overview of all final papers in the ‘MBS Outstanding Thesis’ working paper series can be found here .

The Opioid Crisis, CEO Pay, and Shareholder Activism

In 2020, AmerisourceBergen Corporation, a Fortune 50 company in the drug distribution industry, agreed to settle thousands of lawsuits filed nationwide against the company for its opioid distribution practices, which critics alleged had contributed to the opioid crisis in the US. The $6.6 billion global settlement caused a net loss larger than the cumulative net income earned during the tenure of the company’s CEO, which began in 2011. In addition, AmerisourceBergen’s legal and financial troubles were accompanied by shareholder demands aimed at driving corporate governance changes in companies in the opioid supply chain. Determined to hold the company’s leadership accountable, the shareholders launched a campaign in early 2021 to reject the pay packages of executives. Should the board reduce the executives’ pay, as of means of improving accountability? Or does punishing the AmerisourceBergen executives for paying the settlement ignore the larger issue of a business’s responsibility to society? Harvard Business School professor Suraj Srinivasan discusses executive compensation and shareholder activism in the context of the US opioid crisis in his case, “The Opioid Settlement and Controversy Over CEO Pay at AmerisourceBergen.”
