I’m gonna talk about the country I love to visit, which is Japan. I have been a big fan of anime and started watching this kind of movie when I was a student in high school. I was impressed by the scenery that appears in those movies. They are the limitless inspiration that sparks the want to visit this country in me.

I intend to embark on the journey between mid-March and May next year. I have heard that this is an ideal time for people to see cherry blossoms. I am not going there alone but with some of my friends, because we all think Japan is a fascinating destination. Plus, the more the merrier, and I think if we go together, we can minimize the spending.

I am completing my bucket list, including everything I would do once we set foot in Japan. First, I would try the traditional costume of Japan – the Kimono and take some photos. I am curious about how I look in that dress.

Then, Akihabara, which has emerged as the center of Japanese anime culture, might be the next place. I would see and buy anime collectibles. Last but not least, I would take part in the hanami party, which is the annual flower watching celebration of Sakura. I would enjoy delicious food and drink under the pink trees with my friend. I can’t predict the future, but I believe this upcoming overseas trip would be a holiday of a lifetime for me.

Travel essays and short notes allow you to dive deep into the memories and share your experience with readers. If written well, readers can explore new places without traveling or get inspired to explore new things. The location you have visited may contain many things to discuss: architecture, sightseeing, nature, culture, and much more. How can you tell about it in a short essay? Whether you are planning to write an essay, blog post, or another type of writing – all the tips below will help you craft an appealing paper.

Understand your goals

Before writing a travel essay: 1. Define the main idea you want to stick to in your writing. If you have a specific word limit, you may be unable to cover everything you wish to write about. 2. Check whether the professor asked you to cover specific experiences during your trip or stick to a more descriptive writing style. 3. If you are free of what to write about, make up a list of things you wish to focus on.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

The Country I would Like to Visit Essay

One of the places that amazes me in this universe is the Netherlands. The history and cultural context of the Dutch people fascinates me because this is a society that had to reclaim an entire country from its swampy status to its present flat territory known as Holland today.

The Netherlands is an exciting country because of the freedom that its residents get to enjoy. One can do whatever they like in this nation as long as it does not interfere with any other person’s freedoms and rights enshrined in the constitution. The city of Amsterdam is reputable as a global entertainment hotspot and I would be thrilled to experience the night life that comes with it. The Dutch people are also known to be among the friendliest people in the world, another attraction that would take me to Holland because I am a social being.

It would be thrilling to take a tour in a boat in the waters of the vast water bodies surrounding the various cities in this country. I would cherish every moment that I get to see the famed lighthouses that are scattered across the country’s various harbors. My visit to the Netherlands would not be complete without thronging one of the numerous cafes that have some of the most sumptuous cakes which people get to enjoy as they relax. I believe touring all over the Dutch country would give me the ultimate exposure that would open up my mind and my perception towards different issues and items around the world. I hope my dream of visiting Holland will one day come true because this remains to be the only country that I would give anything to be able to visit, even if it were for a few days.

A country I would like to visit

As I am fond of traveling, I have been to many interesting places in our country. Now I have a chance to learn about ASEAN countries, including my country. A country I would like to visit is Cambodia.

I think that visiting Cambodia is very exciting since it has many sights to keep the tourists occupied. I would very much like to visit the world's largest "Ankow Wut" temple which is situated in northwest of Cambodia. As it was built in 12th century, it is one of the centuries old pagodas which is worth visiting. I would also like to visit Silver Pagoda which is situated in Royal palace compound. Unlike other pagodas, it's floor is made up of five thousand silver tiles. I also want to see the frescos on the wall. These frescos reveal the classical play of Ramayana in Khmer version. If I get there, I will surely visit the National Museum which represents the finest of Phenom Phon architecture. I want to see more than 5000 work of arts ranging from 6th to 13th century. I am sure that National Museum is the treasure house of Asia richest culture. I also want to go to market areas and buy some antiques.

Actually, I would like to see and experience the culture, customs and facinating wonders in Cambodia. That is why, I would like to have a chance to visit Cambodia, a member of ASEAN.

Trump-Harris debate: Breaking down the winners (and losers) from last night

Kamala Harris was the biggest winner on Tuesday night as she delivered a forceful performance in her debate with Donald Trump, but it also was a good night for Democratic party leaders who helped engineer her campaign and the ABC News debate moderators .

Trump, meanwhile, found himself constantly on the defensive and struggling to rebut Harris. President Joe Biden also came in for plenty of criticism, as did the now infamous Project 2025 by the Heritage Foundation.

Here is a list of winners and losers from the matchup between Trump and Harris in Philadelphia.

Kamala Harris

Harris came into the debate trying to get under Trump’s skin , and she often succeeded. She prompted angry responses from him on everything from his rally crowds to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The debate largely was fought on ground chosen by Harris, with the vice president repeatedly baiting Trump into prickly rebuttals of her critiques on his record. Harris was under pressure to prove she could perform on the biggest stage. She delivered a poised performance that could help extend the early energy around her campaign. She also ended the night securing perhaps the most prized celebrity endorsement of 2024: Taylor Swift .

Nancy Pelosi and Democratic leaders

Pushing Biden out of the presidential race was a painful , awkward and difficult process for Democrats that risked dividing the party for an uncertain payoff. Harris’ performance offered validation that the pain was worth it for Democrats to get a candidate who could deliver a much more forceful and coherent message than Biden. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was a driving force in that process, and now looks prescient, as do other Democratic leaders in the House and Senate who kept the pressure on Biden.

Debate moderators

Fact checking a debate in real time isn’t easy. ABC News moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis handled it deftly, offering calm but forceful corrections to Trump’s claims about abortion, crime and immigrants without being overly combative and disrupting the flow of the contest. Trump is a challenge for any debate moderator, and some partisans may be upset that he was repeatedly fact checked. But Muir and Davis ensured their millions of viewers received accurate information.

Policy discussions

There were big questions about how much Trump would stick to policy, and whether he could avoid personal attacks on Harris . But there was plenty of substance in this debate. Trump didn’t even bite when the debate moderator asked about his previous comments questioning Harris’ racial identity, avoiding the question. Instead, the debate probed the candidates’ views on everything from abortion to economic policy and foreign affairs. Trump touted his policy proposals related to tariffs, tax cuts and immigration. Harris called for restoring the abortion protections once enshrined in the now-overturned Roe v Wade Supreme Court decision. There wasn’t much that was new for those who have been closely watching the campaign, but it could help define the candidates for anyone who hasn’t been paying close attention to the race.

Ever since Harris entered the race, Trump has been under pressure from his own allies to stay focused on policies and not delve into personal attacks. In particular, Republicans believe Harris is deeply vulnerable on the economy and inflation . Trump tried to hit on his favorite themes of the economy and immigration Tuesday, but often found himself veering off message and responding to Harris’ criticisms. He was on the defensive throughout the debate, with long stretches devoted to him rebutting Harris’ comments about his rallies, his response to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, how he is viewed by foreign leaders and other critiques. Trump’s responses were angry, rambling and went on tangents that took him far off course from favorable political ground.  

The lame duck president who dropped his reelection bid under pressure from Democrats continues to be an object of scorn from Republicans and Trump, who blasted his record on the debate stage. Although Harris often defended aspects of the Biden administration’s record, she also tried to distance herself from him as polls continue to show low approval ratings for his economic stewardship and other issues. “Remember this, she is Biden,” Trump said at one point, prompting Harris to declare: “Clearly I am not Joe Biden, and I am certainly not Donald Trump.” Harris pivoted to touting her own policy proposals as she tried to separate herself from Biden.

Heritage Foundation and Project 2025

The preeminent conservative think tank has become a preeminent pain in Trump’s behind this election cycle after laying out a bunch of policy ideas for a second Trump administration that could give many voters pause. The proposal calls for aggressively overhauling the federal government, including making it easier to fire civil servants and eliminating the Departments of Education and and Commerce. It also suggests banning pornography and says marriage should be “biblically based,” which could target same-sex marriage. Harris mentioned Project 2025 early in the debate, prompting Trump to disavow it, as he has in the past. “I have nothing to do with Project 2025,” he said. Yet many individuals close to Trump had key roles in creating the plan.

Election deniers

After long saying the 2020 election was stolen, Trump has attracted attention and criticism from his right flank in recent weeks for comments suggesting otherwise. He recently said he “lost by a whisker.” Asked about that Tuesday, Trump claimed he was being sarcastic and continued to claim there were problems with the election, falsely stating “there’s so much proof.” But even Trump didn’t say to have the heart for an extended defense of his election fraud claims. “You know what that doesn’t matter because we have to solve the problem that we have right now,” Trump said. “That's old news.”

What the Polls Say About Harris That the Trump Team Doesn’t Like

Now that we have a little more data about how voters are processing the new Kamala Harris-versus-Donald Trump presidential matchup, the poll unskewing — efforts to prove that certain unfavorable survey results are missing the mark — has begun.

Right out of the gate comes Tim Saler, a data consultant for Mr. Trump’s campaign, who takes issue with the latest CBS News/YouGov poll showing Ms. Harris ahead of Mr. Trump by one point nationally and running very close to Mr. Trump in the key battleground states. In an internal memo that the Trump-Vance campaign made public , Mr. Saler writes:

The latest CBS/YouGov poll of registered voters nationwide showing margin-of-error shifts in the national head-to-head ballot between President Trump and Kamala Harris is entirely the result of a methodological decision allowing ideology to change significantly, while maintaining weights on age, partisanship and race to make the survey appear not to have been manipulated. Without this manipulation, President Trump would be maintaining a 51 to 49 lead in their Aug. 4 survey.

There’s a lot of interesting and potentially controversial stuff going on with this poll and how it estimates the results in the battleground states, but for today, let’s unpack Mr. Saler’s particular complaint. His contention is that the only reason the poll shows Ms. Harris doing so well is a “methodological decision” about what factors to hold steady and what factors to allow to shift from poll to poll, with the implication that there were choices made intentionally that “manipulated” the results. (A Trump campaign senior adviser, Brian Hughes, went further, calling it a “national gaslighting campaign.”)

Whenever we pollsters conduct a survey, we know that the sample of people we talk to may not exactly match up demographically with the broader population. As a result, we adjust our data to align with known benchmarks, a process known as weighting. The New York Times/Siena College poll, for instance, weights its results along a dozen dimensions , and that’s just for understanding registered voters, to say nothing of the additional modeling that goes into the poll’s results among the likely electorate.

Weighting a survey by factors like age and race is quite standard and is a basic matter of good research practice . Weighting a political survey by party identification is also fairly common these days, though not without controversy and complication; while my age will always be a fact rooted in the year of my birth, I may wake up tomorrow and decide I am no longer a member of the political party with which I identified yesterday. Pollsters have robust and friendly debates over the best ways to keep a poll from over- or undersampling people of a certain party. (And yes, when it comes to sampling, pollsters sometimes get it wrong.)

Ideology (as opposed to party identification) is not a factor most pollsters hold to be constant. While I as a pollster can have good benchmarks for how old or how male or how Democratic an electorate is likely to be, ideology is an attitude that is arguably more fluid than even partisanship. The Trump campaign may very well be using ideology as a weight in its internal polling, as is its prerogative, but CBS News/YouGov isn’t some strange outlier trying to manipulate its results by not holding ideology steady.

If a major change in the race (such as the rollout of a whole new major-party presumptive nominee) suddenly means that more progressive voters become fired up and engaged in the process, it would not be unusual to see a slightly higher number of liberals and progressives as likely voters.

The VMAs just might be the ultimate concert of the season. In addition to taking on hosting duties this year, Megan Thee Stallion is also scheduled to perform during the show.

7 big issues at stake in the 2024 election

WASHINGTON — The policy contrasts between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are sharpening as the general election campaign gets fully underway.

But what does the choice represent for ordinary voters and the economic and cultural issues they care about? A rematch between the Democratic incumbent and his Republican predecessor may feel uninspiring to many voters, but the policy stakes are enormous for tens of millions of Americans — and the world.

Here are seven big issues at stake in the 2024 election.

The contrast: Biden favors federal abortion protections; Trump opposes them. Trump supported nationwide restrictions on abortion as president but now downplays the need for a federal ban, as Republicans are divided over the issue. Biden does not support federal limits.

Biden has championed the Women’s Health Protection Act, a bill to protect abortion rights in all 50 states under federal law and prohibit medically unnecessary hurdles to accessing the procedure. He has asked voters to send him a Democratic Congress that supports legal abortion to achieve that.

Trump has boasted that he "broke Roe v. Wade" by picking three of the five Supreme Court justices who overturned it, delivering on a four-decade goal of the GOP. More recently, Trump has openly fretted that the backlash may cost him and his party the election. Last week, Trump said the issue should be left to states, a shift from his support for nationwide restrictions when he was president. His new stance has drawn pushback from GOP allies, like Sen. Lindsey Graham, of South Carolina , and anti-abortion-rights advocates, who say that he is wrong and that Republicans should not be deterred from their long-standing goal of enacting some nationwide abortion limits.

Some Republicans downplay the prospects of federal abortion restrictions’ passing Congress, even if they win full control. Biden and his allies are telling voters to look at the GOP’s long history of championing federal restrictions and not their recent rhetoric.

Immigration

The contrast: Trump has promised a sweeping crackdown on illegal immigration and tougher executive actions; Biden is asking Congress to give him more tools to manage an overwhelmed border and create new legal pathways to immigrate to the U.S.

Trump has called existing border laws an existential threat to the U.S., saying migrants are “ poisoning the blood of our country” and bringing new “ languages .” His campaign website says: “President Trump will shut down Biden’s border disaster. He will again end catch-and-release, restore Remain in Mexico , and eliminate asylum fraud. In cooperative states, President Trump will deputize the National Guard and local law enforcement to assist with rapidly removing illegal alien gang members and criminals.”

After having rescinded some of Trump's policies, Biden has recently shifted to support stricter immigration laws as the system remains overwhelmed. He championed a bipartisan bill to raise the bar for gaining asylum, grant more U.S. resources to process asylum claims and turn away migrants who do not qualify, and empower the president to temporarily shut down the border if migration levels hit certain triggers. (Republicans blocked the bill in the Senate amid lobbying by Trump , who wants to use the border as an election issue.) Biden has also endorsed the U.S. Citizenship Act , which would grant a pathway to citizenship for people in the U.S. illegally if they pass background checks and pay their taxes.

Fundamentally, Trump has aligned with forces who want less immigration into the country, while Biden has embraced the belief that immigrants make the U.S. better.

Health care and prescription drugs

The contrast: Biden wants to extend Affordable Care Act provisions and empower Medicare to negotiate more prescription drugs; Trump has aggressively criticized the ACA but not offered a health care plan.

Biden, who was vice president when the Affordable Care Act passed in 2010, sees it as a cherished achievement to protect and strengthen. The law, also known as "Obamacare," which has extended coverage to 45 million people through subsidies, insurance mandates and a Medicaid expansion, continues to face conservative opposition.

Separately, Biden has touted a provision in his party-line Inflation Reduction Act that empowers Medicare to negotiate lower prices for 10 prescription drugs. He said he wants to boost that to 50 if he is re-elected, with the goal of $200 billion in savings.

Trump spent his four years as president fighting unsuccessfully to repeal and unravel the law — through legislation and executive action and endorsing lawsuits to wipe it out. In November, Trump called for revisiting plans to "terminate" the ACA . He has recently sought to downplay that and insists he only wants to improve the law. But he has not offered a health care plan. Many of his GOP allies in Congress still favor repealing or undoing the ACA, including a budget by the Republican Study Committee, which boasts about 80% of the House GOP conference as members, including Speaker Mike Johnson, of Louisiana.

The contrast: Trump's 2017 tax cuts expire at the end of next year, and he has called for extending them; Biden has called for raising taxes on families earning over $400,000 to fund various priorities.

A series of Trump tax cuts, which Republicans passed on a party-line basis in 2017, expire at the end of 2025. Congress and the winner of the election will decide what happens to them.

In a recent private speech to wealthy donors, Trump s aid his policies include "extending the Trump tax cuts" if he is elected, according to a Trump campaign official. That would preserve lower rates across the income spectrum, with the biggest benefits for top earners.

Biden has attacked that law as a giveaway to the wealthiest Americans, vowing to make "big corporations and the very wealthy finally pay their fair share." He has backed a corporate tax rate hike from 21% to 28% and said that "nobody earning less than $400,000 will pay an additional penny in federal taxes." Biden is also calling for a $3,600-per-child tax cut for families, an $800 average tax break for "front-line workers" and a 25% minimum tax on billionaires, according to a newly released campaign plank.

The expiration of the Trump tax cuts will restore the unlimited federal deduction for state and local taxes, which Republicans had capped at $10,000 in the 2017 law. Republicans broadly support preserving the cap, with some exceptions, while most Democrats want to lift it.

Judges and the Supreme Court

The contrast: Their track records tell a clear story. Trump has picked young conservative judges to serve on the federal bench, while Biden has picked liberals with a focus on professional and personal diversity.

One of the clearest contrasts is what kinds of judges Trump and Biden would pick for lifetime appointments on the federal courts. A simple way for voters to think about it is whether they prefer new judges with the conservative views of Justice Neil Gorsuch, Trump's first Supreme Court pick, or with the liberal views of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Biden's (so far only) high court pick.

As president, Trump nominated young conservative judges who will serve for generations. Biden has focused on finding judges with diverse backgrounds and résumés, including more civil rights lawyers and public defenders.

Perhaps the biggest question is whether a Supreme Court vacancy will open up in the next four years. The presidential election winner and the party that controls the Senate would fill it.

The contrast: Trump is pushing a 10% across-the-board tariff on imports; Biden's White House opposes that, saying it would raise inflation.

Trump, long a skeptic of U.S. trade deals, has proposed to impose a 10% tariff on all imported goods if he returns to the White House. He recently told Fox News that it could be 60% — or potentially “more than that” — on imports of Chinese goods.

Biden opposes that idea. In a memo over the weekend, the White House slammed the idea of "across-the-board tariffs that would raise taxes and prices by $1,500 per American family," without naming Trump; it referred to an estimate by the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank, that Trump's 10% tax on imports could cost an average American household $1,500 per year.

Biden, instead, has sought to boost domestic manufacturing with major federal investments in semiconductors and electric vehicles.

Foreign policy and NATO

The contrast: Biden favors Ukraine aid, while Trump is skeptical of it; Biden supports NATO and a traditional view of American power, while Trump has criticized NATO and voiced some isolationist views.

The clearest example of the foreign policy differences between the two concerns the fate of Ukraine, which is running low on ammunition and says it needs U.S. assistance to continue holding off Russia’s aggression. Biden is an ardent proponent of helping Ukraine, while Trump has poured cold water on U.S. aid to Ukraine and successfully pressured House Republicans to block it since they took the majority in January 2023.

And that points to a deeper divide: Biden is an outspoken supporter of the NATO alliance as a bulwark against adversaries like Russia and China and of preserving the post-World War II order. Trump has dialed up his criticisms of NATO and aligned with a growing isolationist wing in the U.S. that wants to be less involved in global affairs. Trump recently said that as president, he “would encourage” Russia “to do whatever the hell they want” to member countries who are “delinquent” in their dues.
