If your class uses assignment links between Canvas and zyBooks, first navigate to Canvas.

Choose the course that uses zyBooks:

Screen_Shot_2019-03-20_at_9.21.20_AM.png

Next, click on "Assignments" and choose the assignment you want to submit.  Clicking on the link will activate the assignment. Please note that you can only submit points for assignments in their corresponding links. Example: Assignment 2's points cannot be submitted through Assignment 1's link. Only Assignment 1's points can be submitted.

Click on "Load [assignment name] in new window" (assuming your instructor has opted to open zyBooks in a new window. Otherwise, zyBooks will open up within the Canvas window).

If you have assignments that have not been submitted, zyBooks will give you a reminder:

Screen_Shot_2019-03-20_at_9.22.43_AM.png

Every time you earn a new point in an activated assignment, your score will be sent directly to the grade book, until the due date has passed.

Note that if you complete an assignment before activating it, your score will be automatically sent upon activation.

If for any reason your score does not get automatically sent, you can also submit your points in the Assignments tab.  The most common cause of this would be if your instructor chose to give you an extension for the assignment and you completed the assignment between the original due date and the new due date.

New Features in Canvas for Fall ‘24

Canvas has rolled out several new features for the Fall 2024 semester to enhance your teaching and streamline course management.

Randomize the Student List in SpeedGrader

SpeedGrader now includes an option to randomize the order in which students appear. This feature aims to reduce grading fatigue and bias. You can find this option by clicking the gear icon in SpeedGrader’s top-left corner. Once enabled, this setting will remain active until changed.

Tip: Combine this with the “Hide student names in the SpeedGrader” feature to further reduce bias.

Record a Screen Capture Video as a Feedback Comment in SpeedGrader

Canvas Studio is now integrated directly into SpeedGrader’s comment section, allowing you to record screencast videos as feedback. This feature requires using Chrome or Edge. Captions are automatically generated.

Tip: Practice using this feature by submitting an assignment as a “Test Student” and reviewing the feedback process. To do this, use the “View as Student” button on any assignment in Canvas to submit the assignment as “Test Student” in your course. Leave student view, and then use Test Student’s submission to practice using this new feature.

Track Online Attendance

A new “Online Attendance” tab is available in New Analytics. This dashboard shows which students have been active in your Canvas course. You can customize what counts as “attendance” through the Settings button. This dashboard gives you an overview of which students are “present” in your Canvas course by day.

Module Differentiation

You can now differentiate modules by visibility through the “Assign To” option available in the module’s three-dot menu. This allows you to set visibility for individuals or everyone.

New Assignment Settings Interface

The interface for assignment settings has been updated. The “Assign To” section now appears in a new “Assign Access” tray where you can set due dates and differentiation options.

Availability Dates and Differentiation for Pages

Canvas Pages now support the “Assign To” option, allowing you to set availability dates.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) Feature Options

Canvas has introduced preview access to two new AI features that are still in development. These features are not enabled by default in your course, but they can be enabled:

  • Go to Settings in your course.
  • Click on the Feature Options tab at the top of the page.

AI features that you can enable:

  • Once enabled, add the Smart Search link to your course navigation.
  • This allows students to search through course content easily.
  • This feature provides an AI-generated summary of student responses in discussion boards.
  • You can prompt the tool to focus the summary on specific aspects, like identifying misconceptions.

Members of the Instructional Support Network (ITS, UTLC, and Academic Technology Specialists) have extensively tested the AI Discussion Summaries. While this feature in Canvas shows promise, our testing revealed some concerns.

If you plan to enable this in your course, please reach out to your ATS for more information. Watch for events where you can actively engage with this feature, test it, and contribute to the discussion on its ethical use here at UNC Greensboro.

If you need assistance with these new Canvas features, please contact your school’s Academic Technology Specialist or 6-TECH .

Canva acquires Leonardo.ai to boost its generative AI efforts

Canva logo on bag sitting on a table.

Canva has acquired Leonardo.ai , a generative AI content and research startup, as the company looks to broaden the scope of its AI tech stack.

The financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but Canva co-founder and chief product officer Cameron Adams said it’s a mix of cash and stock. All of Leonardo.ai’s 120 employees will be joining Canva, including the executive team.

“Leonardo will continue to run independently of Canva with a focus on rapid innovation, research and development, now backed by Canva’s resources,” Adams told TechCrunch. “We’ll keep offering all of Leonardo’s existing tools and solutions. This acquisition aims to help Leonardo develop its platform and deepen their user growth with our investment, including by expanding their API business and investing in foundational model R&D.”

Sydney-based Leonardo.ai, founded in 2022, was originally meant to focus on video game asset creation — the startup’s founders met while working at a video game company. But then Leonardo.ai’s team decided to build out the platform to meet more scenarios, like creating and training AI models for image creation across industries such as fashion, advertising and architecture.

Today, Leonardo.ai offers collaboration tools and a private cloud for models, including video generators, as well as access to APIs that let customers build their own tech infrastructure on top of Leonardo.ai’s platform.

how to submit a canva assignment to canvas

Leonardo.ai differentiates itself from other generative AI art platforms by the amount of control that it gives users, co-founders Jachin Bhasme, J.J. Fiasson and Chris Gillis told TechCrunch in an interview last December. For example, Leonardo.ai’s Live Canvas feature enables users to enter a text prompt and then make a quick sketch of what they want the end result to look like. As the user sketches, Leonardo.ai creates a photorealistic image based on both text and sketch prompts in real time.

It’s unclear how Leonardo.ai trains its in-house generative models, like its flagship model Phoenix. It’s an important question to ask about any generative AI service, given the legal ramifications of training models on copyrighted content sans permission. Leonardo.ai’s PR kept it vague when we asked for clarification, saying only that the models are trained on “licensed, synthetic and publicly available/open source data.”

Canva itself has been relatively supportive of creators in adopting generative AI, committing $200 million over the next several years to pay creators who consent to having their content used to train the company’s AI models.

Doubling down on AI for growth

Leonardo.ai has over 19 million registered users, and its tools have been used to create more than a billion images.

Adams says Leonardo.ai will help contribute to Canva’s Magic Studio generative AI suite. The company had raised over $38.8 million in capital from backers including Smash Capital, Blackbird, Side Stage Ventures, TIRTA Ventures, Gaorong Capital and Samsung Next prior to the acquisition.

“We’ll look to integrate Leonardo’s technology into Magic Studio, which we’re very excited about,” Adams said. “This might include making existing Magic Studio tools more powerful, or introducing new generative AI capabilities powered by Leonardo’s models directly in Canva. It’s early days, and we’ll be coming together right away to determine how this looks, but we’re excited to expand what our users are able to do with AI on Canva.”

Canva has been investing in generative AI tools since December 2022, beginning with the copywriting assistant Magic Write . But, eyeing an IPO, it has ramped up its development efforts in recent months through both internal projects and acquisitions. In February 2021, Canva acquired Kaleido , which makes a drag-and-drop background removal service for images and video. Adams said Kaleido laid the foundation for much of Canva’s more recent generative AI efforts.

Leonardo.ai

Leonardo.ai is Canva’s eighth acquisition overall and its second acquisition this year, coming three months after it bought U.K. design company Affinity for an estimated $380 million. Canva also owns presentations startup Zeetings, free stock photography sites Pixabay and Pexels, and Czech-based product mockup app Smartmockups.

Canva, founded in 2012, has raised more than $560 million (most recently at a $26 billion valuation), and is pulling in close to $2 billion in revenue. It boasts over 180 million monthly users worldwide.

“It’s a significant but natural next step in our efforts to build the most powerful, all-in-one visual AI offering,” Adams said. “We’ve placed a strong focus on building an AI-powered workflow that includes generative solutions like image and design generation. Pairing that Canva workflow with new generative capabilities will help us continue to set our AI offering apart, and deliver new possibilities for the growing base of teams and enterprises using Canva.”
