‘New York’ (Movie Review)

Director Kabir Khan can take a bow for making a film that’ll please masses and classes

Follow Latest Bollywood News on Google News

When a hardcore commercial flick gets a standing ovation and a huge round of applause at the end of the show, you know that there is something definitely right that the director has done. In this regard, Kabir Khan can take a bow because he has done exceedingly well in making a film that is not frivolous, has a message and still carries enough commercial ingredients to reach out to masses as well as classes.

His “New York” is a gripping dramatic thriller that has all the trappings to finally end the drought that Bollywood has been facing for an entire year so far.

The film gets on to the point right away. The entire sequence of events involving FBI and the round up of suspects is brilliantly executed that makes you further believe that Kabir Khan knows the job right.

If in his first attempt “Kabul Express” he gave a documentary start to the film by showing actual clippings of 9/11, in case of “New York” too he doesn’t shy away from showing the world what US has become post 9/11.

So what one gets to see is not just America’s mentality after 9/11, but also the way suspects are detained for months and tortured in spite of lack of concrete evidence. However, to the credit of the filmmaker, the brutality being demonstrated is pretty much under control.

Even though the desired impact is created for the audience to be a part of the lives of John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Katrina Kaif, nothing goes over the top or something that cannot be swallowed.

With a subject like “New York” where one of the protagonists is labelled as a terrorist and the other is out to prove that he isn’t, the film could have become a grim drama, more so because it deals with real issues. Still, the makers do not allow the film to go beyond the boundaries where it could possibly have been classified as an art or an offbeat film.

Instead, a strict eye is kept on the box office hence making sure there is enough drama, thrills and emotional moments to keep audiences thoroughly engaged in the not-so-lengthy movie.

John can finally do away with his trunks and ignore coming out of the sea and show his body beautiful for next few years. The acting potential in him has finally been tapped by Kabir Khan and he gives his career’s best performance so far in the movie. Watch out for the scenes in the detention centre or the film’s climax – they are surely going to bring a lump in your throat.

Neil has the most complex role of the three as he has to be a part of the proceedings in spite of being on the peripherals. Without revealing much about his part, it can be comfortably said that all the flak that he got post the release of “Aa Dekhen Zara” would be forgotten once audiences see him in this author backed role.

His scenes with Irrfan Khan, who plays an FBI officer and is extremely effective once again, need a special mention. They are extremely well written and enacted.

Katrina too suits the role to a T and after “Namastey London” again gets to play a part where she actually contributes to the film’s plot.

With the kind of subject that “New York” has, it could have easily become a sermonising or a pseudo exercise in motion. Thankfully, Aditya Chopra, who has written the film’s story, doesn’t allow that to happen. He keeps it all under check to ensure that “New York” reaches out to the masses while also ensuring itself quite a few awards when the best of the best are announced at the end of the year.

“New York” is a must watch!

New York Reviews

new york bollywood movie review

Where it falters is in the way its screenplay turns fluffy—it takes away from the necessary tautness a thriller like this requires.

new york bollywood movie review

Kabir Khan uses thriller conventions to address such issues as the suspension of civil liberties and the [US] government's ever-expanding power to harass, detain and deny due process to detainees.

Full Review | Jul 2, 2009

new york bollywood movie review

Although the film is a routine thriller with few surprises, it deserves attention because its topic, even eight years after Sept. 11, is one that many South Asian Americans still take very seriously.

Kabir Khan's New York -- part Bollywood potboiler, part overwrought examination of the war on terror -- is a slice of the Big Apple that you should skip.

Full Review | Original Score: 1/5 | Jul 1, 2009

A predictable, brow-furrowing drama (sadly songless except for a couple of Sunday-in-the-park montage sequences) about the effects of 9/11 (and 9/11 paranoia) on some South Asian immigrants living in New York.

It's a remarkable history, rich in comedy and occasionally heartbreaking, filled with wise reflections and strange digressions about the wonders of life.

A captivating, gripping and thoroughly provocative thriller.

Critics Review

Kudos to Kabir Khan for tackling the most complex - and sensitive - problem of today's world with disarming simplicity, without being insensitive to anybody. It's topical, meaningful and entertaining, all at the same time. (more)

Source: Nikhat Kazmi, Times Of India

New York wants to be a meaningful film about a relevant issue, but the makers don't seem to have the courage in their convictions. As a result, it's evenly 'commercialised' with all the trappings of a typical Bollywood potboiler. (more)

Source: Rajeev Masand, IBN Live

A fairly compelling watch

New York is brilliant in bits and parts. Kabir Khan furiously tries balancing grim reality with candy-floss Bollywood sensibilities. The technical support (the cinematography, sound design, songs, styling) is fab. (more)

Source: Sonia Chopra, Sify.com

Could have been better

Saddled with a plot-holed script and poor performances from half of its starcast, 'New York' falls short of expectations. Watch it if you have three hours to kill. (more)

What do people think of New York (2009)?

It looks like this movie got widespread acclaim and the trailer and the clips I found on YT at least looks like it has pretty good performances and deals with heavy topics in a nuanced way without intersplicing it with songs or montage sequences.

The movie involves an American Muslim student who gets identified as a suspect by the FBI and is held and tortured and Guantanomo Bay

People who have watched this, opinions? Is it worth a watch? Why isn't this movie more talked about here if on wikipedia it has such good reviews?

10 Bollywood Films Starring New York City

Ta Ra Rum Pum

With over 1000 new productions each year, Bollywood is the largest film producer in the world, trumping Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Bangla, and Kannada! The term “Bollywood” is an amalgamation of Bombay (modern-day Mumbai) and Hollywood, the center of the American film industry. Thought all Bollywood movies were filmed in India? Think again! We profile 10 Bollywood films starring New York City .

Kabhi alvida na kehna.

This romantic drama tells stories of adultery and extramarital relationships. Directed by Karan Johar and produced by Dharma Productions, this movie is gorgeously shot against several iconic New York locations, from Pier 17 to Park Avenue, Columbia University, the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges, Central Park, to the East West Gate Sculpture. This larger-than-life production was screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival and was included in the library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’

English Vinglish

This comedy- drama directed by Gauri Shinde tells the story of a housewife who enrolls in an English course to improve her language skills. The story was inspired by Shinde’s mother, a Marathi -speaking woman who ran a pickle business from her house in Pune. As India’s official entry for the 2012 Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category, this film was marketed as presenting the “Meryl Streep of India” and the “female Rajinkianth in Japan.”

‘English Vinglish’

Kal Ho Na Ho

This blockbuster , promoted as “A Story of a Lifetime…In a Heartbeat”, unfolds a triangular romantic drama of love and loss. This song is so popular that the German Embassy in India even released an eight-minute video titled “Lebe Jetzt” as an homage to the movie. The film’s soundtrack received critical acclaim and commercial success, with the title song listed on a list of the BBC Asian Network’s Top 40 Soundtracks of all time (it made it into the top five). Filming locations included Bethesda Terrace, Wall Street, Bow Bridge, Union Square Subway, Water’s Edge Restaurant, and the Brooklyn Bridge Park.

‘Kal Ho Na Ho’

This Tamil comedy was the most expensive Indian film made upon its release in 1998. Due to its success, it was dubbed and re-released in Hindi and Telugu. This hilarious drama focuses on twin brothers who fall for a woman pretending to be a twin. First titled Genes, it was later changed to the homonym Jeans , as the director felt the original title was unappealing. The majority of the film was shot outside of India, with one song featuring the Seven Wonders of the World. Filming locations included the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the World Trade Center.

‘Jeans’

My Name is Khan

This critically-acclaimed drama achieved international recognition for its depiction of an Indian Muslim man with Asperger’s who embarks on a cross-country journey to meet the president of the United States. Distributed by FOX Star Entertainment, this film became the highest-grossing overseas Bollywood film in 2010. Directed by Karan Johar and featuring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol in the lead roles, this film explores a multitude of perspectives revolving around the global issues of discrimination and intolerance. In a pre-release interview for the movie, Khan described the movie as a film concerning “the relationship between the Western world and Islam and how that has changed over the past few years.” A story with a strong message, My Name is Khan is a must-see.

‘My Name is Khan’

London Paris New York

Abbreviated to LPNY, this romantic comedy is a witty coming-of-age movie that takes a conventional premise and twists it into something delightfully unconventional. The main characters are two polar opposites who are drawn to each other in spite of their differences — or rather, because of them. This drama takes you along their journey as they meet in London, Paris, and New York for a night in each city. Times Square, Central Park, and the Fulton Pier make special appearances in this charming film.

Before leaving, they make a suicide pact to kill themselves on New Year’s Eve. Filming locations include Wollman Rink, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Wall Street.

‘Anjaana Anjaani’

A thriller produced by Yash Raj Films, New York tells the story of three students whose lives are changed by the September 11th attacks and their aftermath. The main character is accused of terrorism and sent to Guantanamo Bay, where he is viciously tortured. Eventually found innocent, he returns to New York, but is forever changed. Filmed over a period of hundred days, this powerful movie was mostly shot in New York City.

Jaan E Mann

This romantic comedy centers on two men who share an intense love for the same woman but can’t seem to find the words to express their feelings. Ten years after college, this trio reunites and fond memories rapidly resurface as complicated feelings inevitably underscore the happy reunion. Manhattan is truly the star of Jaan E Mann.

Jaan E Mann

Ta Ra Rum Pum

A family drama loosely based on Talladega Nights and Days of Thunder , this movie follows the aftermath of a racing accident and the protagonist’s comeback to reclaim his title. Walt Disney Studios completed a four-minute animated endeavor for the title song as part of its three-film contract with Yash Raj Films. Filming locations included the Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, the New York Public Library, and Park Avenue.

Kevin costner’s $100m movie ‘horizon’ ends theatrical run with huge financial loss.

Kevin Costner got dealt a major blow by theatergoers this summer.

His Western film “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter One,” which cost $100 million to make, made only $32 million during its theatrical run, which came to an end last week.

According to Box Office Mojo , the film domestically earned around $11 million the weekend it debuted in theaters on June 28.

The movie’s gross domestic total was about $29 million when it closed in theaters last week.

Internationally, “Chapter 1” made over $3.6 million — bringing the film’s worldwide box office total to $32.6 million.

It’s been confirmed by Costner, 69, that he spent $38 million of his own money to make the first installment in the planned four-part film series.

“That’s the message I want my kids to understand about who I am: that I do what I believe,” the actor told GQ in May when he was promoting “Horizon.”

“I have fear like everybody else. I don’t want to be humiliated.”

Costner’s film completely bombed upon its release less than two months ago. It struggled with fans and critics, earning a 49% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes .

Glynn Turman, Kevin Costner in "Horizon"

In his review, The Post movie critic Johnny Oleksinski wrote , “I could not fathom committing another 540 minutes of my time to this bloated ego trip.”

He added: “It’s hard to believe  Costner left ‘Yellowstone’ to make such an embarrassing, poorly told mess … There are more than 20 named roles scattered all over the place — the San Pedro Valley, the Montana Territory, the Western Santa Fe Trail — and viewers strain to care much for any of them, so bland and animatronic they all are.”

Kevin Costner in "Horizon"

The Oscar winner addressed his film’s flop performance this past weekend, saying that he’s “faced life with people being dismissive of me” in an interview with “E! News.”

“But they can’t be dismissive of ‘Horizon,’ because now it’s out of their hands,” Costner said. “And they might point to the finish line — well, this is what it did at the box office — but I know that this movie is going to play for the next 50 years.”

Kevin Costner at the "Horizon" premiere in LA on June 24, 2024

The failure of “Chapter 1” also resulted in the next sequel losing its theatrical release date, which was scheduled for Aug. 16 .

“Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 2” — which Costner also helped fund — will now premiere at the Venice Film Festival  on Sept. 7, where the first movie will also screen.

In a previous interview with Deadline , Costner revealed he took out a mortgage on his 10-acre home in Santa Barbara, California, to help pay for some of the “Horizon” film series’ budget.

Kevin Costner in "Horizon"

“I’ve mortgaged 10 acres on the water in Santa Barbara where I was going to build my last house,” he said. “But I did it without a thought. It has thrown my accountant into a f—king conniption fit. But it’s my life, and I believe in the idea and the story.”

In addition to Costner, “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” also stars Sienna Miller ,  Sam Worthington ,  Luke Wilson  and  Giovanni Ribisi , who will all be in the sequel.

7 New Movies Our Critics Are Talking About This Week

A bouquet of red flags.

A smiling blond woman and a dark-haired man face each other onstage for a karaoke duet against a neon-lit backdrop.

‘It Ends With Us’

In this romance based on the book of the same name by Colleen Hoover , flower-lover Lily (Blake Lively) falls in love with picture-perfect neurosurgeon Ryle (Justin Baldoni, who also directed), but discovers he may not be so perfect.

From our review:

It Ends With Us” is fitfully diverting, at times touching, often ridiculous and, at 2 hours and 10 minutes, almost offensively long. It’s visually and narratively overbusy, stuffed with flashbacks of Lily as an adolescent (Isabela Ferrer) that create two parallel lines of action. … The flashbacks add information, yet they also pull you away from the adult Lily, which fragments Lively’s performance and drains the slow-building momentum of her scenes. Just as unfortunately, Baldoni prettifies everything — trees, cityscapes, people — to the point that each detail, pose and smile seems lifted from a lifestyle ad instead of true, messy reality.

Bullets over back story.

‘borderlands’.

This action caper from Eli Roth, based on the video game franchise of the same name, follows the bounty hunter Lilith (Cate Blanchett), joined by a band of outlaws, as she tracks down, a tycoon’s daughter (Ariana Greenblatt).

You can see the jokes, but most of them don’t land. Still, there is some neat design work if you squint. The masks are pretty cool, like the ones worn by a handful of goons who sport glow-in-the-dark face coverings with eerie green slits, and a digital technology allows people to wear other people’s pixelated faces over their own. … In voice-over narration at the beginning, [Blanchett] drolly intones that the plot to come is “some wacko B.S.” We don’t disagree.

Critic’s Pick

Coming-of-age with men who don’t act theirs.

On a camping trip, 17-year-old Sam (Lily Collias) grapples with the immature behavior of her father (James Le Gros) and his old friend (Danny McCarthy) in this drama.

“Good One” is the writer and director India Donaldson’s feature debut, and an astounding one, full of the kind of emotional detail that can only come from personal experience. The movie smoothly shifts from gentle comedy to emotional punch, modest in a way that sneaks up on you in the end, backed by Celia Hollander’s acoustic, folk-inflected score. For most of the film, we’re expecting something to happen to Sam — it feels inevitable, out here in the woods with two grown men. But when something does happen, it’s totally unexpected and revelatory.

The boys are back in Beantown.

Shah Rukh Khan at the 2024 Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, where he was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

“King Khan” ruled the Piazza Grande, the iconic big square in the center of picturesque Swiss town Locarno, on Saturday night. Bollywood icon  Shah Rukh Khan  brought his global star power to the 77th edition of the Locarno Film Festival as he was honored with a lifetime achievement award , the so-called Pardo alla Carriera, or Career Leopard.

Just before 10 p.m., the screen showed a highlight video of many of Khan’s films, which drew constant cheers and other ecstatic reactions.

Just minutes later, the star took to the stage to be showered in cheers, applause and screams of “I love you!” He received his honorary Golden Leopard award from Nazarro and thanked him and the evening’s host, Sandy Altermatt, who is also known for her work as a Swiss TV host.

Khan shared with the audience how heavy the award was, drawing laughs. Sweating due to the hot weather, he also told the excited crowd that he was happy to be in Locarno in a square full of people, and he was honored to be in Locarno, a “very beautiful, very cultural, very artistic and extremely hot city with so many people stuffed up in a little square and so hot.” He then joked: “It’s just like being home in India.”

He also thanked the crowd, saying: “Ladies and gentlemen, I want to thank you all for welcoming me with such wide arms — wider than the ones I do onscreen.” He stretched out his arms in his signature pose to cheers. And he added: “I love you all.”

On a more serious note, the mega-star said: “I truly believe cinema has been the most profound and influential artistic medium of our age. I’ve had the privilege of being part of this for many years, and this journey has taught me a few lessons I’d like to share with you.” Among them was, “that art is the act of affirming life above all.”

Khan later expressed his gratitude for his career and fans and drew more laughs, saying: “For 35 years, I’ve been working. I’ve been a villain. I’ve been a champ. I’ve been a superhero. I’ve been a zero. I’ve been a detective fan, and I’ve been a very, very resilient lover.”

After flashing a smile amid cheers, the actor concluded: “I normally don’t go out for occasions like this. I don’t know how to relate to people, how to talk to them. I just know how to act a little bit — not too much.”

As part of the Locarno tribute, the festival is also screening Khan’s 2002 hit  Devdas  from director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, in which the star plays an alcoholic.

The 58-year-old has been a box office draw and ambassador for Indian cinema since breakthrough performances in such movies as Baazigar  (1993) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge  (1995). He also earned praise for his portrayal of a man with Asperger’s Syndrome in  My Name Is Khan  (2010), among others.

Locarno organizers said the award pays tribute “to his remarkable career in Indian cinema, consisting of more than 100 films in a breathtaking multitude of genres.”

Nazzaro previously told T h e Hollywood Reporter that “ Shah Rukh Khan is the quintessential power of cinema.” He compared the star to the “popular glamor of a hero of the working class, like Marcello Mastroianni,” combined with “the arrogant elegance of someone like Alain Delo.” He concluded: “In Shah Ruhk Khan, I can see the trajectory from Rudolph Valentino to Tom Cruise, and it’s all there in one person.”

The presentation of the award to Khan was followed by the world premiere of Mexico 86 , the new film from Guatemalan director César Díaz ( Our Mothers ). It stars Bérénice Béjo ( The Artist ) as a Guatemalan rebel fighting against the military dictatorship and having to leave her son behind.

During the first few minutes of the film, Khan’s fans, who were crowded around the far end of the red carpet away from the square, could still be heard chanting “Shah Rukh Khan!” and cheering.

The 77th Locarno Film Festival runs through Aug. 17.
