Should you accept an invitation to join the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS)? It may seem like a no-brainer. After all, the organization describes itself as “a distinguished academic honor society, committed to recognizing and serving the highest-achieving student scholars.”

But before you spend the $75 on a lifetime membership, it’s worth considering how you’ll benefit—if at all—from inclusion in the organization and if your money would be better spent elsewhere.

The National Society of High School Scholars was founded in 2002 with a declared mission to  “recognize academic excellence and honor the highest achieving high school students, providing them with the resources and network to excel in college, career and community.” NSHSS’s co-founder is the grand-nephew of Alfred Nobel—the scientist, inventor, businessman, and founder of the Nobel Prizes. 

NSHSS has grown quickly over the two decades since its founding—today, it boasts more than 2 million members from more than 26,000 high schools across 170 countries. The NSHSS’s swelling ranks are partly thanks to the organization’s relatively broad and generous membership requirements. Students who meet any one of the following criteria are considered for membership: 

• Achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher   
• Score 1280 or higher on the SAT
• Score 1150 or higher on the PSAT
• Score 26 or higher on the ACT
• Score 4 or higher on any AP exam
• Total combined IB tests of 36 or higher 
• In the top 10% of their class

Another requirement of membership is a one-time $75 fee, although fee waivers are available to students able to demonstrate financial need. 

It’s common for students to confuse the National Society of High School Scholars with the National Honor Society (NHS). The two organizations share similar-sounding names and missions, however, they have stark differences . First and foremost, NHS has a much longer history than NSHSS—NHS was founded more than a century ago (in 1921), 80 years before NSHSS. 

The NHS’s stricter qualifications are another characteristic that set the two organizations apart. NHS membership is open to students in grades 10 through 12 and each school’s chapter has its own membership requirements. Although each NHS chapter has unique prerequisites its potential members must meet, they are all based on the four pillars of NHS: 

• Scholarship: a minimum 3.0 GPA (although a school chapter can require higher) 
• Service: contribute to the school or community without compensation 
• Leadership: demonstrated at school or community activities while working with, or for, others
• Character: cooperative, honest, and reliable, showing courtesy, concern, and respect for others while maintaining a clean disciplinary record

The NHS is serious about contributions outside of the classroom—on average, an NHS chapter contributes 1,000 hours of school/community service, $26,000 in charitable donations, and 1,000 pounds of food to local, state, and national causes annually. 

Because the NHS has a higher bar for entry than the NSHSS, its membership is smaller—it’s about half that of the NSHSS. Another substantial difference between the two organizations is that the NHS is free, while you need to pay to play with the NSHSS.

Is NSHSS a Scam?

NSHSS isn’t a scam, per se—it’s a legitimate organization and even has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau . That said, there are several things NSHSS does that lead people to call it a scam. 

For one, they intentionally chose a name that could be easily mistaken for the NHS—an older, better established, and more prestigious competing organization. A quick scan of the complaints against NSHSS filed with the BBB shows that it’s common for people to jumble the two organizations. 

The invitation letter sent by NSHSS also lists the high school of the student, leading to students and parents to believe that the organization is endorsed by the school (and creating further confusion with NHS, which operates in school chapters).

More importantly, NSHSS doesn’t return on the $75 investment it requires members to make. The huge membership of the NSHSS means involvement with the organization isn’t particularly impressive, doesn’t add value to your college profile, and will do little to set you apart from other college applicants. 

NSHSS also offers regalia for sale to be worn during graduation, but many high schools don’t recognize the organization or allow it to be worn during the ceremony, leading to further wasted money.

While NSHSS provides a variety of scholarships—NSHSS and its partners offer more than $2,000,000 in scholarships annually—the large number of members means a high probability of fierce competition for the awards. 

The NHS is a more reputable honor society to join, due to its higher standards and association at the school level. Also adding to the NHS’s credibility is its lack of a membership fee, which makes it feel less of a quid pro quo. 

Does Joining NSHSS Improve Your College Chances?

Joining NSHSS isn’t very selective; consequently, participation in the organization will do little for your college chances. The four tiers of extracurricular activities are a good guideline for understanding how your activities outside of the classroom—in organizations like NSHSS and NHS—affect your college chances. 

The four tiers of extracurricular activities are a way to categorize them by the influence they have on college admissions. The highest tiers (one and two) are the most impressive to admissions, while the lower tiers (three and four) are less impactful. 

• Tier 1 activities are the most attention-grabbing and influential to college admissions—they’re extremely rare and demonstrate exceptional achievement or leadership, such as being the #3 tennis player in the state or making the national youth orchestra.
• Tier 2 activities also demonstrate high levels of achievement and leadership, but they’re not quite as rare as Tier 1 activities, such as being student body president or your debate team making states.
• Tier 3 activities show leadership and achievement, but are more common, such as being varsity team captain or making the most selective dance group in your school. 
• Tier 4 represents participatory activities, such as volunteering or being a member of a club—although they’re not as impactful as their counterparts in the higher tiers, Tier 4 activities are beneficial for showing admissions officers your interests outside of school.

Which tier of extracurricular activity does NSHSS belong in? Because the organization isn’t particularly selective and doesn’t provide the opportunity to demonstrate leadership, it’s best placed in Tier 4. Comparatively, the NHS is a Tier 3 activity, thanks to its stricter requirements. Assuming a leadership role within the NHS will make your participation with the organization even more impressive to colleges.

About NSHSS Creative Writing Scholarship

NSHSS scholarships, provided by the National Society of High School Scholars , strive to lessen financial obstacles for high school students. These scholarships support students in various fields including Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, business, economics, public policy, environmental science, and more. The foundation’s objective is to assist the nation’s future leaders in realizing their aspirations.

• Three (3) $2,000 awards for the Fiction category
• Three (3) $2,000 awards for the Poetry category

Eligibility:

• NSHSS members who are high school students graduating in 2024, 2025, 2026, or 2027.

Scholarship Details

How To Apply:

• Poetry: Submit your original poetry in any style.
• Fiction: Submit a short story of up to 5,000 words in any genre.
• Winning entries will be published on the NSHSS website and judged based on creativity, technique, expression, and originality.
• All work must be your own.
• Plagiarism is not allowed.
• By submitting your work, you give NSHSS the right to publish it in various formats. However, you can still publish your work elsewhere.
• Students can apply to one or both categories, with only one entry per category allowed. Each student can only win one NSHSS Scholarship per academic year.

1. NSHSS Steam Scholarship

Award: $1,000

Closing Date: August 15

This scholarship was established by NSHSS to recognize and reward students who demonstrate a commitment to and success in the STEAM disciplines. The scholarship is open to high school graduates who aim to pursue a career in science/medicine, technology, engineering, the arts, or mathematics.

2. NSHSS + Lead4Change Student Leadership Scholarship

Award: $2,500

Closing Date: August 31

The NSHSS and the Lead4Change Student Leadership Program are teaming up to give scholarships to deserving high school seniors who have shown a dedication to leadership and civic engagement.

Students who participate in the Lead4Change program will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, discover their strengths, and put what they learn into practice in the community.

3. NSHSS James W. Lewis High School and Collegiate Global Leader Scholarship

Award: $5,000

James W. Lewis Global Leader Scholarship was founded to celebrate young leaders who embody the principles to which Mr. Lewis has dedicated his life and work to creating educational opportunities for all, particularly young people who identify with under-represented groups.

Students in their sophomore, junior, or senior year of high school and college students who have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average may apply.

4. NSHSS Collegiate Council Leadership Scholarship

Closing Date: September 15

In order to be eligible for this scholarship, NSHSS Collegiate Council Members must maintain a 3.0 or better GPA and have exhibited a positive impact on the global community through their service to NSHSS. Plus, applicants must be enrolled in college, either as an undergraduate or graduate student.

5. NSHSS Activism and Advocacy Scholarship

Closing Date: September 30

High school and college students who are interested in promoting social, political, or civil change in their communities are eligible for the NSHSS Activism and Advocacy Scholarship. Applicants must submit a 500-800 word essay on a topic or issue that particularly interests them.

6. NSHSS Foundation Business & Public Policy Scholarship

The scholarship promotes majors that teach students about the importance of economic and political aspects in public decision-making and policy development and their application to specific public policy themes.

Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and plan to study Business/Business Administration, Finance/Economics, or Public Policy at an accredited institution or university.

7. NSHSS Innovation in Technology Scholarship

Award: $2,000

NSHSS aims to recognize and reward students that have a strong interest in technology by providing them with a scholarship to help them pursue their goals.

High school seniors and college students that have a strong interest in artificial intelligence (AI), coding, technology, and more are welcome to apply for the program.

8. NSHSS Foundation STEM Scholarship

Closing Date: October 15

NSHSS awards STEM scholarships to underrepresented groups in order to decrease financial barriers for individuals with academic and leadership aptitude and a desire to pursue STEM careers. The scholarship is open to recent graduates with a 3.0 GPA and a demonstrated interest in pursuing a degree in a STEM area.

9. NSHSS Mental Health Awareness Scholarship

Closing Date: October 31

Through this initiative, NSHSS aspires to recognize and reward students who have made significant contributions to raising mental health awareness and bringing about good change in their communities. This award is open to rising high school juniors and seniors as well as college students of all levels.

10. NSHSS Performing Arts: Dance Scholarship

NSHSS has established this scholarship for students interested in obtaining a degree in the performing arts. To complete the application, the candidate must upload a video of their work. Students in their final year of high school, as well as those who have just graduated, are encouraged to apply.

11. NSHSS Film and Video Production Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must produce and submit a film that expresses their worldview. As long as the subject matter is meaningful and inspiring to the narrator, it can be whatever they want. Rising high school students and recent grads alike are eligible to participate in the contest.

12. NSHSS Visual Arts Scholarship

Awards will be presented to the top finalists in two categories: Photography/Digital Photography and Painting/Drawing/Mixed Media/Digital Art. It is open to high school students and recently graduated seniors who are interested in applying.

13. NSHSS Creative Writing Scholarship

Do you have an exceptional talent in writing? These NSHSS Scholarships are for you! You can enter the competition in one of the two categories: poetry or fiction. You have to submit your original poetry or a piece of short fiction. The entry may be any genre of your choice.

Your work will be judged on creativity, technique, expression, and originality. Rising high school students and recently graduated seniors are encouraged to apply for the contest.

14. NSHSS Student Athlete Scholarships

This student athlete scholarship , which has been established by NSHSS, is intended for student athletes who are committed to their sports and achieve in their respective fields. All genders and all sports are welcome to apply.

15. NSHSS Performing Arts: Theater Scholarship

Students interested in pursuing a career in performing arts are eligible to apply for this award. A component of the application asks you to upload a video of yourself performing. It is available to theater-loving high school juniors and seniors, as well as recent grads.

16. NSHSS Performing Arts: Music Scholarship

Those who want to pursue a career in the performing arts, particularly music, can apply for the NSHSS Performing Arts: Music Scholarship. You will be required to submit a short video of your performance much like any other NSHSS Scholarships in the arts.

17. NSHSS Passion for Public Service Scholarship

This scholarship is open to high school seniors who have shown a commitment to public service. Urban planning, environmental protection, emergency services and first responders, military duty, and public education are just a few examples of public service.

All high school and college students are eligible for this scholarship, regardless of their academic level.

18. NSHSS Community College or Trade School Scholarship

NSHSS offers a scholarship exclusively for students preparing to attend a community college or a trade school or who are already enrolled in such a program. For high school graduates who are already enrolled in or are going to attend community college or trade school, this program is designed specifically for you.

19. NSHSS Diversity Scholarship

Students in their sophomore, junior, or senior year of high school who have shown a commitment to increasing diversity and inclusion in their school, community, or workplace are eligible to apply for these NSHSS scholarships.

20. NSHSS Emerging Leader Scholarship

Closing Date: June 1

NSHSS Foundation’s Emerging Leader Award honors students who have made a substantial and positive impact via their leadership activities and efforts.

Undergraduate college freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are eligible to apply for this distinguished award if they have a minimum 3.0 GPA and have shown themselves to be role models for leadership in their schools, communities, and workplaces.

21. NSHSS Foundation Innovation in Education Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and motivate academics who are committed to promoting educational innovation, growth, and improvement.

It is open to undergraduate and graduate students from the United States and other countries who have a strong interest in education. Educators in graduate school who are seeking a degree in education are also eligible to apply.

22. NSHSS Foundation Eunjae and Grace Kim Peralta-Ramos Family Scholarship

Award: $3,000

In order to promote cultural interchange, the Eunjae and Grace Kim Peralta-Ramos Family Scholarship has been established. High school seniors and college freshmen who are actively engaged in academic or extra-curricular interests that promote cultural awareness, understanding, and acceptance are eligible for this prize.

23. NSHSS-DECA Scholarship

Closing Date: January 15

You must be a junior or senior in high school to apply for this award. Students from the United States and abroad are eligible to apply, provided they are members of DECA.

24. NSHSS Foundation Earth Day Awards

Award: $500

Closing Date: March 15

Through this Earth Day Award competition, NSHSS aims to promote environmental stewardship among high school students worldwide. High school students with a 3.0 GPA or better are eligible to participate in the project.

Details of an environmental project, including how it will affect current and future generations, must be detailed in a written document.

25. NSHSS 18 Under 18 Award

Closing Date: April 30

NSHSS is searching for the nation’s most effective leaders under the age of 18 whose motivation has a positive impact on the world. NSHSS members who reside in the United States and have not turned 18 by June 1 of the award year are eligible for this scholarship.

26. NSHSS Virtual Valedictorian Scholarship

Closing Date: May 1

What would you like to say to the graduates of the year and the rest of the world as an NSHSS Virtual Valedictorian? It is time to put it out there! To be eligible for this award, you do not need to be the class valedictorian.

The competition is available to all graduating high school seniors who are citizens of the United States of America.

27. NSHSS Research and Academic Paper Scholarship

Award: $250

Closing Date: May 30

The NSHSS honors high-achieving high school students who have authored academic papers for class assignments, such as research articles, unique essays, or analytical papers.

For the essay to count, it must have been assigned and submitted in a high school class, or a current class you are taking. Dual-enrollment students can submit papers from their college classes.

NSHSS Scholarships Application

Select a scholarship to examine the essay question and begin writing your response. Also, applicants must provide a CV and transcript, as well as a letter of recommendation from an educator.

What Are Writing Scholarships?

Writing scholarships come in two primary forms. The first kind targets students who intend to pursue writing-related majors or careers. The second option allows anyone with writing skills to earn scholarship awards but doesn’t necessarily limit eligibility based on the student’s major or future career plans.

Scholarships for young writers can help your student pursue their dream while giving them a chance to avoid student loan debt. Since many writing careers don’t start with large salaries, this can make pursuing a career in that arena more affordable.

In most cases, scholarships for writers require applicants to submit some form of writing sample. This can be in addition to other essays or the only written component requirement.

It’s important to note your student needs to read the fine print on all of the scholarships for writers they consider. In some cases, the written pieces or scholarship essays they turn in become the property of the awarding organization, regardless of whether your student receives a scholarship. As a result, some only allow unique writing per the rules, so your student might not be able to submit the same piece repeatedly.

There is a slew of writing scholarships available. Some accept a wide variety of writing content during the application phase, even short fiction, while others focus on specific forms of writing, like poetry writing scholarships that only consider submissions that include a poem.

Azadeh Hashemian

Azadeh Hashemian is a writer and translator based in Norwich, UK, has had her work featured in both Persian and English in the other side of hope and Silk Route Project at the University of Iowa among other places. Currently she is working on two projects. Firstly, her memoir, which explores the complexities of growing up as a woman in post-revolution Iran, exploring various paradoxes inherent in that experience. Secondly, a collective narrative that traces the evolution of Iranian women's clothing under two contrasting sets of dress codes: forced unveiling and forced veiling, all within the span of a single century.

Bex Frankeberger

Bex Frankeberger is a writer and musician based in Brooklyn. Their writing has been featured here and there but most recently in Mizna. Raised somewhere between the Pacific Ocean and Mojave Desert, they abstain from almonds in solidarity with the drought.

Marcus Ong Kah Ho

Marcus Ong Kah Ho is a Singaporean writer and literary arts teacher. His work has appeared in American Short Fiction, Chicago Quarterly Review, Granta, and more. He is working on a novel and short story collection. Find him at  www.marcusongkh.com

Meredith L. King

Meredith L. King (she/her) is a creative nonfiction writer, playwright, and poet. Her work engages Black kinship, uncomfortable truths, and the collision of place with identity. Meredith holds a B.A. from Stanford University with honors, and an M.B.A. from Yale University. She is a 2024 Anaphora Arts Fellow, received a 2022 Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award for Playwriting, and was named Best Local Playwright of 2020 by Cleveland Scene Magazine. Mrityunjay Mohan is a queer, trans, disabled writer of color. Nicasio Andres Reed

Nicasio Andres Reed  is an editor, writer, and poet whose work has appeared in venues such as  Strange Horizons ,  Lightspeed ,  Reckoning , and  Fireside . He lives in Tagaytay, in the Philippines, with four dogs, some family, and the occasional uninvited monitor lizard. He currently serves as the poetry editor for  The Deadlands , and is working on a speculative historical novella about the lives of Filipino migrant workers in California and Alaska in the 1930s. Oso Guardiola

Oso Guardiola received his first M.F.A. in Creative Writing - Fiction from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where he was the recipient of the Maytag Scholarship and the Arthur James Pflughaupt Prize in Fiction. His short stories have been awarded the 2023 Gulf Coast Prize for Fiction, the 2022 runner-up for the J.F. Powers Prize in Fiction, and the 2021 Honorable Mention for the San Miguel Writers' Contest in Fiction. He was the 2024 Winter Workshop Scholar for Tin House. His fiction has appeared in Latino Book Review Magazine, La Piccioletta Barca, Dappled Things Literary Magazine, and is forthcoming in Gulf Coast Magazine. Today, Oso pursues a second M.F.A. in Creative Writing - Spanish with a poetry thesis at the University of Iowa Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

Rob Macaisa Colgate (he/she/they) is a disabled bakla poet and playwright from Evanston, IL. He is the author of the debut poetry collection Hardly Creatures (Tin House, 2025) and the verse drama My Love is Water (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2025). His work appears or is forthcoming in Best New Poets, American Poetry Review, Poets.org, Sewanee Review, Gulf Coast, and New England Review, among others, and has received support from MacDowell, Fulbright, Kenyon Review, and the Canada Council for the Arts. He received an MFA in poetry and critical disability studies from the New Writers Project at UT Austin and is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Alberta, poet-in-residence at Tangled Art + Disability, and assistant poetry editor at Foglifter Journal.

Rona Luo is a queer, neurodivergent poet and acupuncturist working at the intersection of decolonial healing and writing as somatic practice. She is a Kundiman fellow and member of Southbank Centre's New Poets Collective 22/23. Her work appears or is forthcoming in The Massachusetts Review, ANMLY, Honey Literary, Mom Egg Review, fourteen poems, Suspect Journal, and Bi+ Lines anthology.  Her speculative visual poetry has been exhibited at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

Sneha Subramanian Kanta

Sneha Subramanian Kanta is an academician and multi-genre writer currently residing in Ontario, Canada. She is the author of five chapbooks including  Ancestral - Wing  (Porkbelly Press, 2024),  Every Elegy Is A Love Poem  (Variant Lit, forthcoming), and  Ghost Tracks  (Louisiana Literature, 2020). Somto Ihezue

Somto Ihezue is a speculative fiction writer, an acquiring editor, and a filmmaker. He is a recipient of the Mandela Institute’s African Youth Network Movement Fiction Prize, the Horror Writers Association Grant, and the EbonyLife Academy Alumni Film Grant. His work was shortlisted for the British Fantasy Award (Sydney J. Bounds) for Best New Writer, and has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, Afritondo Short Story Prize, the British Science Fiction Award, the Utopia Awards, and the Nommo Awards. His works have found homes in venues like Tor: Africa Risen, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, POETRY Magazine, Strange Horizons, Podcastle, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Escape Pod, Omenana Magazine, Africa In Dialogue, The Sauútiverse Anthology, and others. Theresa Sylvester is a Zambian writer based in Western Australia. She is an alumna of Faber Writing Academy, as well as Stuyvesant Writing Workshop where she studied under Nicole Dennis-Benn. Roseanne Pereira is the daughter of immigrants from Goa, grew up in South Florida, and currently lives in Minneapolis. She is a graduate of Yale University and the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. Her work has appeared in a variety of print, online, and on-air outlets, including Catapult, Minnesota Public Radio, and The Shanghai Literary Review. She served as a Kroc fellow at NPR and an Upper Midwest Human Rights Fellow at the Center for Victims of Torture. Sasha Fox Carney

Sasha Fox Carney is a writer and editorial assistant from Ottawa, Ontario. Their work has been published in places including The Yale Literary Magazine, The Forge, and Barren Magazine. A two-time recipient of the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award, they were longlisted for the CBC Poetry Prize in 2019. They live in Brooklyn.

Abdelrahman ElGendy

Abdelrahman ElGendy is an Egyptian writer and journalist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was a six-year political prisoner in Egypt. While in prison, ElGendy started and earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Ain Shams University. He is a Dietrich fellow at the University of Pittsburgh's Nonfiction Writing MFA, a Heinz fellow at Pitt's Global Studies Center, a 2021 Logan Nonfiction fellow, a 2023 Tin House Workshop scholar, an awardee of the 2023 Katharine Bakeless Nason Award in Nonfiction by Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, and a finalist for the 2021 Margolis Award for Social Justice Journalism. ElGendy's writing is engaged with counter-narratives of history, the role of writing and art as forms of resistance, and how the oppressed individually and collectively preserve their identities in the face of erasure. His writing appears in the Washington Post, New Lines Magazine, the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP), Mada Masr, and elsewhere.

Allan Martín Nava Sosa

Allan Martín Nava Sosa is a queer Mexican-American writer from Stockton, CA and a recent graduate of UC Irvine’s MFA Programs in Writing where they were awarded the 2022 Henfield Prize. Their fiction has been published in Zyzzyva and the Santa Monica Review.

Alexis Aceves Garcia

Alexis Aceves Garcia is a trans writer, researcher, and facilitator living and longing in San Diego, CA. Alexis M. Wright

Alexis M. Wright is a California writer based in Massachusetts. Her lyric essay “Which One is the Lifeline?” appears in The Common and was named a Notable Essay in Best American Essays 2023. Her essay “The Disney Look” is included in the anthology Mamas, Martyrs, and Jezebels: Myths, Legends, and Other Lies You’ve Been Told About Black Women, published by Black Lawrence Press. An excerpt from her memoir-in-progress, Membership, was a finalist for the 2023 CRAFT Memoir Excerpt & Essay Contest, guest judged by Sarah Fawn Montgomery. Alexis is an alumna of the Anaphora Writing Residency and the Juniper Institute. She was also a 2023 Tin House Scholar and the recipient of a Contributor’s Award in Nonfiction from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. She earned her MFA from the University of San Francisco.

Anthony Christian Ocampo

Anthony Christian Ocampo , Ph.D. is a writer and sociologist in Los Angeles. He is the author of BROWN AND GAY IN LA: THE LIVES OF IMMIGRANT SONS and THE LATINOS OF ASIA: HOW FILIPINO AMERICANS BREAK THE RULES OF RACE. His writing has appeared in GQ, Catapult, Los Angeles Review of Books, BuzzFeed, and more. Anthony is working on his third book ON THE MARGINS OF JUSTICE, a narrative nonfiction account of Asian Americans' experience with the criminal justice system. He is a Professor of Sociology at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

Chantal Rondeau

Chantal Rondeau (MFA IAIA) is an Indigenous writer, journalist, tv personality and documentary filmmaker. She is a member of the Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation in the territory of the Yukon, and is of the Hanjek Hudan Clan (Crow People). Chantal has been published in Northern Public Journal, Xoxo Jane, and Urban Native Magazine among others. Chantal ultimately hopes to tell stories that shift perceptions and lead to a global understanding of the modern-day Indigenous people.

Cindy King is the author of a book-length poetry collection, Zoonotic (Tinderbox Editions, 2022), and two poetry chapbooks, Easy Street (dancing girl press, 2021) and Lesser Birds of Paradise (Southeastern Louisiana University Press, 2022). Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in The Sun, New England Review, The Threepenny Review, North American Review, Denver Quarterly, Cincinnati Review, and elsewhere. Cindy was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up swimming in the shadows of the hyperboloid cooling towers on the shores of Lake Erie. She is an associate professor of creative writing at Utah Tech University and faculty editor of The Southern Quill and Route 7 Review. She is also an editorial assistant for Seneca Review.

Coby-Dillon English

Coby-Dillon English Coby-Dillon English (they/them) is a writer from the Great Lakes. A member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, they currently are an MFA fiction candidate and Henry Hoyns Fellow at the University of Virginia, where they teach writing and serve as the editor-in-chief and nonfiction editor for Meridian . They were a 2023 Tin House Scholar and a 2021 Periplus Collective Fellow. Their writing has received two Pushcart Prize nominations, a Best of the Net nomination, and PEN/Dau Prize nomination for best debut short story and can be found or is forthcoming in Cream City Review, Yellow Medicine Review, Salt Hill Journal, and others. Project Description : Counting Geese & Other Insomnias follows a family of disordered sleepers, from their creation to their dissolution, and beyond. This fragmentary novel-in-stories focuses on this family of not-sleepers, while also expanding to include a cast of characters and environments that disrupt the complex sensorial world that exists for the exhausted. A story of Indigenous displacement and ancestral hauntings, with considerations of how land and place influence our lifeworld, Counting Geese & Other Insomnias examines how people connect, with others, with themselves, with their environments, through exhaustion.

Daad Sharfi

Daad Sharfi is a poet and immigrant-rights advocate from Chicago, by way of Sudan. She is an alumna of Winter Tangerine, Cave Canem, Brooklyn Poets and the DreamYard Rad(ical) Poetry Consortium. Her work appears and is forthcoming in 20.35 Africa: An Anthology of Contemporary Poetry, Sawti, PANK, Voicemail Poems, WHEN WE EXHALE: An Anthology of Black Women Rooted in Ancestral Medicine, and elsewhere. Currently, she lives in Brooklyn and is pursuing her JD at NYU Law, where you'll often find her daydreaming in class about the endless possibilities of language.

Elisabeth Booze

Elisabeth Booze is a writer and teacher from Colorado Springs, CO. She holds a BA in English with a concentration in Creative Writing from the University of Denver, an MFA in Creative Writing from Hollins University, and is currently working towards her PhD in English at the University of Denver. She formerly taught middle and high school English in Kansas City, MO. She is currently working on her first novel, set in her hometown of Colorado Springs.

Frankie Concepcion

Frankie Concepcion is a writer from the Philippines and Massachusetts. She is an M.F.A. Candidate in Fiction at Arizona State University, and the current Managing Editor for Hayden's Ferry Review. She has received fellowships from Tin House, Sibling Rivalry Press and the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing, and her writing has been published or is forthcoming in Barzakh, StoryQuarterly, Joyland, HYPHEN, and more. Kyla D. Walker

Kyla D. Walker is a Turkish-Creole writer and MFA Prose candidate at the University of Notre Dame. Her work has been published or is forthcoming in Electric Literature, Threepenny Review, Cultbytes, and elsewhere. She has received fellowships and scholarships from the Periplus Collective and the NY State Summer Writers Institute, and was selected as a Dole Kinney Creative Writing Prize Winner. Isha Camara

Isha Camara is a poet, visual and makeup artist hailing from South Minneapolis and recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a OMAI First Wave alumna. Logan Klutse

Logan Klutse (he/him) is a senior at Yale University double-majoring in English & Theater Studies, where he's a member of WORD, the oldest and (most hype!) performance poetry group on campus. He calls Lakewood, Colorado, home. He's an emerging writer whose work has appeared in Feral: A Journal of Poetry and Art, Mason Jar Press, and in digital exhibitions at the Yale University Art Gallery.

Meghana Mysore

Meghana Mysore , from Portland, Oregon, is an Indian American writer. A 2022-2023 Steinbeck Fellow in Creative Writing, her work appears or will appear in Apogee, Passages North, The Yale Review, The Rumpus, Indiana Review, Roxane Gay’s The Audacity, Pleiades, McNeese Review, wildness, Boston Review, The Margins, and the anthology A World Out of Reach (Yale University Press). A Bread Loaf-Rona Jaffe Scholar in Fiction and a Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference Scholar, she has also received recognition from the Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing and The de Groot Foundation. She holds a B.A. in English from Yale University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Hollins University. She is working on a novel exploring three generations of a South Indian American family.

MJ Kaufman is a queer, trans, playwright and fiction writer of Ashkenazi Jewish descent currently living in Brooklyn. Their plays have been seen at the Public Theater, WP Theater, National Asian American Theater Company, and numerous other theaters around the country as well as in Russian in Moscow and in Australia. They are a MacDowell Colony Fellow and have had fiction published in Catapult and The Collection: Short Fiction from the Transgender Vanguard. MJ co-founded Trans Lab, a program to support emerging transgender theater artists. They are currently an Assistant Professor of Dramatic Writing at New York University.

Nitya Gupta

Nitya Gupta (she/her) is a fiction writer from Chicago. She is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She was a finalist for the 2022 Jesmyn Ward Fiction Prize and was shortlisted for the 2023 DISQUIET Literary Prize. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Michigan Quarterly Review and Grist Journal.

Rachael Johnson

Rachael Johnson is a disabled, neurodivergent, androgynous-gender-fluid Diné writer/poet/photographer/artist from the Navajo Nation. She belongs to Táchii’nii, the Red Running into the Water people, and is born for Kinyaa’áanii, the Towering House clan. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of New Mexico. Her prose and poetry have been published in The Diné Reader: An Anthology of Navajo Literature, Anti-Heroin Chic, Wordgathering, Writers Resist, Poetry Northwest, Abalone Mountain Press, and Prairie Schooner. Her essay, 'Nowhere Place,' won Prairie Schooner's 2017 Summer Creative Nonfiction Contest, a Glenna Luschei Award, and was recognized as a 2018 Notable Essay by Best American Essays. Her poetry has been a finalist for the James Welch Poetry Prize and 2021 Joy Harjo Poetry Contest. The Diné Reader: An Anthology of Navajo Literature, in which her poems were published, received a 2022 Before Columbus Foundation American Book Award. Her poetry/photography chapbook, My Body is an Ill-fitting Costume, was recently published by Abalone Mountain Press. She is currently revising a novel, Ash, and writing a memoir.

Serayah Silver

Serayah Silver is an Artist/Dreamer; writer/reader, space holder and way maker currently serving as lit manager and in-house dramaturg for MOJOAA PAC. Their screenplay Knead won the Del Shores Writer's Search in 2022 and they currently have two scripts in production with Comfrey Films. Their stories are quiet portraits of extraordinary people, centering Black, Queer, Southern characters coming to terms with the powerful magic inherent at the intersection of those identities. Serayah's work and life revolve around these coinciding truths; God is Change, and Magic is Real.

Soni Brown is a freelance journalist and writer who is a formally-trained chef and former flight attendant. In-between those career stints, Soni has been working on essays and stories that have been published in The Believer, AARP Sisters, Desert Companion, The New York Daily News, and Nevada Humanities to name a few. Soni is currently working on a memoir about erasure and her mother’s dementia. She lives in Montego Bay, Jamaica with her family and a polydactyl cat, Priscilla Purrsley.

Subraj Singh

Subraj Singh is a Guyanese writer, and a student in the MFA Creative Writing (Fiction) program at the University of Maryland. He is a 2023 Tin House Workshop Scholar, a 2023 Lambda Literary Fellow, and a 2022 Clarion West alum. He has also been supported by the Gabo Fellowship and the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program. He has won a Guyana Prize for Literature Award, and was shortlisted for the Johnson and Amoy Achong Caribbean Writers Prize and the Columbia Journal Print Contest. His writing has been published in Caribbean Beat, ImageOutWrite, The Arts Journal, and others, with stories forthcoming in Columbia Journal and AGNI. 1) Navy NROTC Scholarship program

The Navy scholarship allows candidates to pursue up to 170 schools and higher education institutions around the United States. Individuals who study MSI (Historically black universities and colleges), Minority Serving Institutions (MSI), and High Hispanic Enrollment (HHE) schools are also eligible.

The amount of money available for a scholarship is $180,000 for the institution (all four years) expenditures and fees

Eligibility Conditions: Such high school graduates who meet the preceding requirements are eligible to apply for the scholarship:

• Minimum aggregate SAT score of 1100 (minimum 540 in math and 550 in reading and writing, both supported by proof)
• The minimum aggregate ACT score is 44. (21 in Maths and 22 in English.
• December 2012 through December 2021 are the test dates for the scholarship year 2022.
• A resident of the United States or in the procedure of obtaining citizenship in the United States

As part of our series  How to Fully Fund Your Master’s Degree , here is a list of universities that have fully funded MFA programs in creative writing. A Master’s of Fine Arts in creative writing can lead to a career as a professional writer, in academia, and more.

Fully funded MFA programs in Creative Writing offer a financial aid package for full-time students that includes full tuition remission as well as an annual stipend or salary during the entire program, which for Master’s degrees is usually 1-2 years. Funding usually comes with the expectation that students will teach or complete research in their field of study. Not all universities fully fund their Master’s students, which is why researching the financial aid offerings of many different programs, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad, is essential.

Here is the list of 53 universities that offer fully-funded MFA programs (Master’s of Fine Arts) in Creative Writing.

University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa, AL): Students admitted to the MFA Program are guaranteed full financial support for up to 4-years. Assistantships include a stipend paid over nine months (currently $14,125), and full payment of up to 15 credit hours of graduate tuition.

University of Arizona (Tucson, AZ): All accepted MFA students receive full funding through a graduate teaching assistantship for 3 years. This package includes tuition remission, health insurance, and a modest stipend (in 2018 it was about $16,100 per academic year).

Arizona State University (Tempe, AZ): 3-year program. All students admitted to the MFA program who submit a complete and approved teaching assistantship application are awarded a TA by the Department of English. Each assistantship carries a three-course per year load and includes a tuition waiver and health insurance in addition to the TA stipend ($18,564 per year). In addition, students have diverse opportunities for additional financial and professional support.

University of Arkansas (Fayetteville, AR): Four-year program. Teaching assistantships currently carry an annual stipend of $13,500 for students with a BA. TAs also receive a waiver of all tuition costs and teach two courses each semester. Nearly all of our accepted students receive TAs. Additionally, the students compete each year for several fellowships.

Boise State University (Boise, Idaho): 3-year fully funded MFA program dedicated to poetry and fiction. All students receive a tuition waiver, health insurance, and a Teaching Assistantship with a stipend of $11,450 per year.

Bowling Green State University (Bowling Green, OH): 2-year program, graduate assistantships (including stipend and scholarship) are available for all eligible face-to-face students. 100% tuition scholarship. Graduate stipend (the 2020-21 stipend is $11,500).

Brown University (Providence, RI): All incoming MFA students received full funding. All graduate students receive a fellowship that pays a monthly stipend and provides tuition remission, the health fee, and health insurance. The stipend for the 2020-2021 academic year is $29,926. Also, students in good standing receive a summer stipend of $2,993.

Boston University (Boston, MA): Tuition costs will be covered for every admitted student for the MFA degree in the BU Creative Writing Program. In addition, admitted students will receive university health insurance while they are enrolled, and all admitted students will receive stipend support of roughly $16,000 for the academic year.

Cornell University (Ithaca, NY): All MFA degree candidates are guaranteed 2 years of funding (including a stipend, a full-tuition fellowship, and student health insurance).

University of California Irvine (Irvine, CA): 3-year program. The Department is committed to providing 3 full years of financial support to all domestic students in the MFA Programs in Writing. Financial support for MFA students is given in the form of Teaching Assistantships providing full tuition coverage as well as University health insurance. Students will earn an estimated $22,569 for the academic year.

University of California San Diego (La Jolla, CA): MFA in Writing students are eligible for financial support if they study full-time, maintain good academic standing and make timely progress toward the degree. All students are eligible for full funding, including international students provided they meet the English language certification requirement for teaching assistants.

University of California Riverside (Riverside, CA): All incoming students are granted a full fellowship and stipend for their first year. After the first year, students receive full tuition and a salary through teaching assistantships.

Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton, FL): 3-year program. All of the MFA students qualify for a position as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. The GTA position comes with a tuition waiver and a stipend. The standard stipend is $9,000, but some enhanced stipends are available. The Graduate College offers several fellowships for current graduate students.

Florida State University (Tallahassee, FL): The majority of students receive support in the form of a teaching assistantship and are provided with a stipend, a tuition waiver, and a health-insurance subsidy. MFA students receive a three-year assistantship. For 2022-23, MA/MFA stipends will be $16,400, and typically these amounts go up each year. Also, The FSU Graduate School offers several fellowships and awards.

Georgia College & State University (Milledgeville, GA): The MFA Program offers workshops in fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry, and students take cross-genre workshops. All students admitted to the MFA program receive a Graduate Assistantship for all 3 years that includes a stipend and tuition remission.

University of Houston (Houston, TX): MFA students can receive a teaching assistantship for 3 years. Starting salary for MFAs is $17,935/9 months. Students in the Creative. As part of the assistantship, students are awarded either a Graduate Tuition Fellowship, which remits tuition, or a Creative Writing Program Fellowship, which covers the cost of tuition.

University of Idaho (Moscow, Idaho): All English Teaching Assistants (TA’s) are offered full tuition waivers. Teaching Assistants are given a stipend of $14,000 per year. Also offers three scholarships and three outstanding fellowships to support qualified MFA, graduate students.

University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (Urbana, IL): Three-year MFA program. Students accepted into the MFA program will receive full tuition waivers, guaranteed teaching assistantships.

Indiana University (Bloomington, IN): M.F.A. programs offer a generous teaching package to creative writing students. All applicants receive consideration for appropriate fellowships that will carry a stipend of about $19,000, plus tuition and fee-remission that covers roughly 90% of the cost of enrollment.

Iowa State University (Ames, IA): 3-year MFA program. Starting half-time 20 hours per week teaching assistantships for MFA students total $19,250 over 10 months and also receive a full-tuition waiver scholarship (approximate value $10,140) and health insurance coverage. The department has several resources available through which to offer fellowships and scholarships to qualifying new students.

University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA): 2-year residency program. Financial assistance is available for all students enrolled in the program, in the form of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships. Most fellowships and assistantships provide either tuition scholarships or full tuition remission.

John Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD): 2-year program. All students receive full tuition, health insurance, and a generous teaching fellowship, currently set at $30,500 per year. Some students work as assistant editors on The Hopkins Review. They often win prizes such as Stegner Fellowships or grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.

University of Maryland (College Park, MD): This 3-year program accepts 8 applicants who are fully funded by Teaching Assistantships for up to three years of graduate study. Our aid packages include a stipend of about $20,000 per academic year and 60 credit hours of tuition remission.

Miami University (Oxford, OH): All students admitted to the MFA program in Creative Writing hold generous Graduate Assistantships (which include a summer stipend). Non-teaching assistantships may also be available.

University of Miami (Coral Gables, FL): An intensive two-year study with a third year option. The James Michener Fellowships and Teaching Assistantships support all our graduate students. Awards include a full tuition waiver and annual stipend of $18,915.

University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI): All MFA students accepted into the program are offered a full tuition waiver, a stipend of $23,000/yearly as well as $5,000 in summer funding, and health care benefits. Additionally, various fellowships and prizes are awarded each year to MFA students.

University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN): All admitted MFAs receive full funding, in the form of teaching assistantships or fellowships. Teaching assistantships carry a full tuition waiver, health benefits, and a stipend of about $18,600. Also, a variety of fellowships are available for graduate students.

University of Mississippi (University, MS): All of our students are fully funded.  We offer two main sources of funding, the Grisham Fellowships and Teaching Assistantships.

University of Nevada Las Vegas (Las Vegas, NV): 3-year program. All MFA students admitted to the Creative Writing International program at UNLV are offered Graduate Assistantship funding of $15,000 per year (which includes in-state tuition and provisions for health insurance).

Northwestern University (Evanston, IL): Funding is provided for 3 full years, summers included. Tuition is covered by a tuition scholarship during any quarter in which you are receiving a stipend.

University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, IN): Every student admitted to the MFA receives a full-tuition scholarship, a fellowship that carries a full stipend of $16,000 per year and access to a 100% health insurance subsidy.

North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC): A two-year, fully-funded program, They accept only about a dozen students each year and offer full funding in the form of a graduate teaching assistantship to all eligible admitted applicants.

Ohio State University (Columbus, OH): All admitted students are fully funded for our 3-year MFA program in Creative Writing. In addition, all students receive either a graduate teaching associateship, a Graduate School fellowship or a combination of the two. For graduate teaching associateships, the student receives a stipend of at least $17,000 for the nine-month academic year.

University of Oregon (Eugene OR): A two-year residency MFA program. All incoming MFA students funded with a teaching appointment. Student instructors receive tuition remission, monthly stipends of approximately $18,000.

Oregon State University (Corvallis, OR): All students admitted to the MFA program will automatically receive a standard teaching Graduate Teaching Assistantship contract, which provides full tuition remission and stipend of approximately $12,800 per year to cover living expenses. In addition to tuition remission, all graduate students have the option to receive 89% coverage of health insurance costs for themselves and their dependents.

University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, PA): 3-year MFA program. All students admitted to the program will receive Teaching Assistantships for two or three years. All Teaching Assistantships include salary, medical benefits, and tuition remission.

Rutgers University–Newark (Newark, NJ): Each full-time incoming student receives in-state Tuition Remission and a Chancellor’s Stipend of 15K per year. Students are also eligible for Teaching Assistantships, and Part-Time Lectureships teaching Comp or Creative Writing. Teaching Assistantships are $25,969 (approximate) plus health benefits.

University of South Florida (Tampa, FL): 3-year program. MFA students receive a tuition waiver, a teaching assistantship that comes with a stipend, and enrollment in group health insurance.

Southern Illinois University (Carbondale, IL): Almost all MFA students hold graduate assistantships, which provide stipends for the academic year and full remission of tuition. The annual stipend, which comes with tuition remission, ranges from $13,000 to $14,500.

Syracuse University (Syracuse, NY): Three-Year M.F.A. in Creative Writing. All students are fully funded. Each student admitted receives a full-tuition scholarship in addition to an annual stipend of $17,500.

University of South Carolina (Columbia, SC): 3-year MFA program. The MFA at Carolina is pleased to provide fellowship and/or assistantship funding to all accepted students, earning our program the designation of “fully funded” from Poets and Writers.

University of Tennessee — Knoxville (Knoxville, TN): There is no cost to apply to the MFA program. All of our PhD candidates and MFA students are fully funded, with generous opportunities for additional financial support.

University of Texas in Austin (Austin, TX): All students in the New Writers Project receive three years of full funding through a combination of teaching assistantships (TA), assistant instructorships (AI), and fellowship support. The complete package includes full tuition remission, health insurance, and a salary.

University of Texas James Michener Center (Austin, TX): A three-year, fully funded residency MFA program that provides full and equal funding to every writer. All admitted students receive a fellowship of $29,500 per academic year, plus total coverage of tuition.

Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN): Each year a small, select class of talented writers of fiction and poetry enroll in Vanderbilt’s three-year, fully-funded MFA Program in Creative Writing. The University Fellowship provides full-tuition benefits, health insurance, and a stipend of $30,000/yearly. In 2nd year and third-year students have the opportunity to teach for one semester.

University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA): Three-year MFA program. Students will receive fellowship support and/or teaching income in the amount of $20,000 each academic year, as well as full funding of your tuition, enrollment fees, and the health insurance premium for single-person coverage through the university.

Virginia Tech (Blacksburg, VA): Three-year MFA degree offers tracks in Poetry and Fiction, and all students are fully and equally funded via GTA-ships of more than $20,000 per year.

Washington University in St. Louis (St. Louis, MO): Because of selectivity and size they are able to offer all the new students full and equal financial aid for both years in the program in the form of a University Fellowship, which provides a complete tuition waiver plus a stipend sufficient for students to live comfortably in our relatively inexpensive city. All MFA students receive health insurance through Washington University.

Western Kentucky University (Bowling Green, KY): Three-year, fully-funded, residential MFA program in creative writing offering generous assistantships, which will allow MFA students to gain valuable experience tutoring and teaching.

West Virginia University (Morgantown, WV): A three-year program. All Master of Fine Arts students receive a full tuition waiver and an assistantship, which includes a stipend valued at $16,750.

Wichita State University (Wichita, Kansas): Most of the MFA students are GTAs who teach two composition classes each semester. They pay no tuition, receive $4,250 each semester and may buy discounted health insurance. The MFA program also awards two $12,500 fellowships each year.

University of Wisconsin–Madison (Madison, WI): All accepted MFA candidates receive tuition remissions, teaching assistantships, generous health insurance, and other financial support. In addition to the approximately $14,680 paid to each MFA annually in exchange for teaching, every MFA candidate will receive another $9,320 in scholarships each year.

University of Wyoming (Laramie, WY): All of our full-time MFA students are fully funded with two-year graduate assistantships. Currently, assistantships include a stipend of $12,330 per academic year, a tuition and fees waiver, and student health insurance. Students also receive summer stipends of up to $2,000 for the summer.

1. Davidson Fellows Scholarship

Application deadline: February 14, 2024

Eligibility: Applicants must be younger than 18 years of age and a permanent resident or citizen of the US

Scholarship amount: Ranging from $10,000 to $50,000, which can only be used for qualified tuition and related expenses

Entry fee: Free

Organized by the Davidson Institute, this program offers scholarships to students who complete a significant piece of research work. This is one of the most prestigious opportunities in the country and winning the scholarship will definitely boost your college applications . Students interested in writing can opt for the Literature category, where you must submit a 60-75 page portfolio of creative work with at least three of the following genres — fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama/screenplay. You must also submit a literacy narrative that reflects on your process of developing the creative work.

2. Optimist International Essay Contest

Application deadline: Early February

Eligibility: Students below the age of 19 who have not yet completed secondary school as of October 1 of the year of the contest

Scholarship amount: Up to $500 at the club level and a $2,500 college scholarship at the district-level competition

Each year, Optimist International announces a new essay topic and participants are invited to submit a 700-800-word essay for a chance to win prizes. The topic for 2023-2024 is ‘Optimism: How It Connects Us’ and your essay can be inspired by your experiences or otherwise. It will be judged on the basis of the interpretation of the topic, creativity, style and grammar. This program is a good way to hone your critical thinking and writing skills. Do keep in mind that you will have to contact your local Optimist Club in order to apply. Club-level winners will then move to the district-level competition.

3. Lumiere Foundation

Application Deadline : There are 4 cohorts (You can apply here!)

Fall 2023: August 27th, 2023

Winter 2023: November 26th, 2023

Spring 2024: January 14th, 2024

No previous knowledge of your field of interest is required!

Eligibility :

You must be currently enrolled in high school or plan to enroll as a freshman in college in the fall of 2023.

Students must demonstrate a high level of academic achievement. (Note. Students have an unweighted GPA of 3.3 out of 4)

Scholarship Amount : N/A

Note . While there is no cut-off for income, past scholars have typically come from households earning less than $50,000 annually (for a typical household of 4) with minimum assets.

While not a university scholarship, the Lumiere Research Inclusion Foundation is a non-profit research program for talented, low-income students. Born out of the Lumiere Research Scholar Program (one of the largest 1-on-1 research initiatives for high school students), the foundation offers the same independent research opportunities in literature and writing at no cost .

The Lumiere Breakthrough Scholar Program is the equivalent of the Individual Research Scholar Program at Lumiere Education. In our flagship program, we pair talented high-school students with world-class Ph.D. mentors to work 1-on-1 on an independent research project . At the end of the 12-week program, you’ll learn about the cutting edge of your field and develop an independent research paper.

4. YoungArts Lin Arison Excellence in Writing Award

Application deadline: June 2024 (for the competition)

Eligibility: High school seniors who have won the National YoungArts Competition

Scholarship amount: $50,000 which can be used for tuition, room and board at an accredited school

The National YoungArts Foundation is a non-profit that hosts a competition for budding artists in ten different categories, one of which is writing. Participants can submit novel excerpts, poetry, non-fiction, scripts or spoken word. Winners receive monetary awards and the opportunity to attend the National YoungArts Week. One finalist of the writing category, a high school senior, is then awarded the Lin Arison Excellence in Writing Award which offers a generous scholarship to help you pursue your higher education . While this may seem like a long shot, the National YoungArts Foundation is a respected organization and taking part in the competition can be worth the effort.

5. Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Application deadline: Between December and January, depending on the region

Eligibility: High school students over the age of 13

Scholarship amount: Varies with each scholarship

Entry fee : $10 per entry or $30 per portfolio

To participate in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, you must submit a completed work of art or writing. The writing categories include journalism, humor, flash fiction, memoir, critical essay, poetry, and more, and will be judged on the basis of your skill, uniqueness, and personal voice . Your work will be judged at a regional level first, winners of which will move on to the national level. Award winners are then eligible for multiple scholarships like university scholarships , portfolio scholarships , and summer scholarships . This is a great option for those who have a written project in a niche sub-section of writing.

6. Penguin Random House Creative Writing Awards

Application deadline: January 16, 2024 or when 1000 applications have been received

Eligibility: Current high school seniors who are under the age of 22 and plan to enroll in a university/school by Fall 2024

Scholarship amount: Five awards available, each of $10,000 which will be processed over a period of four years

As one of the world’s largest publishing houses, a Penguin Random House award is prestigious and will boost your writing career. That said, this scholarship is best for students who have set college plans but are looking for financial aid. Winners also get to attend a virtual development week with one-on-one coaching with Penguin . Your written submission can belong to poetry, spoken word, fiction/drama, personal essay/memoir, or the book bans prompt (a written piece about a banned book that changed your life). You can go through the winning entries here . Seeing as the competition closes with the first 1000 applicants, it’s best to apply early to this one!

7. Immerse Essay Competition

Application deadline: January 4, 2024

Eligibility: Students aged 13 – 18 (open to international applicants as well)

Scholarship amount: Top 10 winners get a 100% scholarship to study at an affiliated university and runners-up get partial scholarships to study with Immerse

Immerse Education is an educational institute based in the UK that provides young students with academic programs. The essay competition directs participants to write a response to a pre-set question in a specific category (while a wide range of categories are available, English Literature and Creative Writing are generally included) . Topics are split by age, with one section for 13-15 year olds and another for 16-18 year olds. The scholarship can be redeemed against summer schools in New York, Cambridge, London, Sydney and more, making it ideal for students specifically looking for summer experience .

8. The Richard G. Zimmerman Scholarship

Application deadline: February (tentatively, based on previous years)

Eligibility: High school seniors who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (international students can apply as well)

Scholarship amount: $5,000

This scholarship is organized by the National Press Club and is meant for students who are pursuing a career in journalism . Your application must include 3 writing samples which can be articles or multimedia stories. Three letters of recommendation are needed as well as documentation of your college application/acceptance. Coupled with the GPA requirement, this can be a fairly selective scholarship. Should you win, you will also receive one year of membership at the National Press Club.

9. Dennis Etchison Young Writers Scholarship

Application deadline: August 1, 2024

Eligibility: Students in grades 10 – 12 who are interested in horror/dark fiction

Location: Online

Scholarship amount: $500

Offered by the Horror Writers Association, this scholarship is solely for writers of horror or dark fiction. To apply, you will need to send writing samples (either one short story, 3 chapters of a novel, or 4 poems) and a letter of recommendation. If you win, the scholarship amount can be used for college tuition as well as other writing-enhancing activities like writing festivals, residencies, courses, textbooks, software, and more . The stipend must be spent within two years. As a bonus, the winner will also be mentored by a professional author for 6 months!

10. National Society of High School Scholars’ Creative Writing Scholarship

Application deadline: October (tentatively, based on previous years)

Eligibility: All high school students as well as recent graduates

Scholarship amount: $2,000

This scholarship is primarily for writers of poetry and short fiction. You can either submit a poetry piece of any style or a short fiction piece of any genre, or both if you feel like . In the end, three applicants from each category win the prize after being judged on their work’s creativity, technique, expression, and originality. If you win, the funds will be sent directly to the university you’ve enrolled at and your entries will be published on the NSHSS website. The NSHSS is an educational organization and this is just one of the many scholarships it offers.

11. New York Women in Communications’ Scholarship

Eligibility: High school seniors, undergraduate and graduate students. Students must live in NY, NJ, CT, or PA, and have an overall GPA of 3.2 or higher

Scholarship amount: $2,500 which will be directly sent to the university you enroll in

Any student pursuing communications-related fields like advertising, broadcasting, journalism, digital media, public relations, etc., should consider this scholarship . It is offered by a non-profit organization known as the New York Women in Communications (NYWICI). The application process does require an interview as well, marking it as a relatively competitive scholarship. As a winner, you will also get a one-year membership at the NYWICI and access to all its events!

If you’re looking for the opportunity to do in-depth research on various topics in literature or linguistics, you could also consider applying to one of the Lumiere Research Scholar Programs , selective online high school programs for students I founded with researchers at Harvard and Oxford. Last year, we had over 4000 students apply for 500 spots in the program! You can find the application form here.

Stephen is one of the founders of Lumiere and a Harvard College graduate. He founded Lumiere as a PhD student at Harvard Business School. Lumiere is a selective research program where students work 1-1 with a research mentor to develop an independent research paper.

Konner Frandsen

Konner Frandsen is a first-year student at Spokane Falls Community College in Spokane, Washington. He is currently studying with the intent to explore chemical engineering as a career. Outside of school, he enjoys writing fictional stories; these include, among other types of writing, plays, short stories, and comics. Konner also tries to exercise at least somewhat regularly and reads a variety of books.

Shaping the Written Word

The University of Idaho English Department has opportunities for a flexible and fulfilling education with a broad range of options. Students can choose either a B.A. or B.S. degree path. The B.A. allows you to earn a general English degree or select from four possible concentrations (18 credits of their total 45 for the major) in creative writing, linguistics, literature, or professional writing. The B.S. allows you to specialize in either Technical Writing or earn a general English degree; it is available either fully online or in-person in Moscow.

In each area of English studies, students will find dynamic classes, engaged professors, and plenty of opportunities for student involvement and internships. In addition, the Department of English offers several scholarships and awards to help finance your education.

Concentrations and Specializations

For the B.A. degree, you can earn a general English degree or you may choose from four possible concentrations:

Creative Writing

In the Creative Writing Concentration, you will work with our internationally famous faculty to analyze and practice the craft of writing in three different genres: fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry. Along with a range of literature courses that will help you develop analytical skills and a deep understanding of literary history, you will take our introductory creative writing class, ENGL 290, and at least five upper-division writing classes.

Students should consult the English B.A. entry in the catalog for more information on course requirements for this concentration area. 

Linguistics

The Linguistics Concentration will engage you in the formal study of languages. In addition to completing coursework that covers language structures, language development and language use in society, you will examine the connection between language acquisition and pedagogy.

Students in the Literature Concentration develop critical thinking, analytical and writing skills through deep study of literature, history and theory. Students can take a range of courses — including surveys of American, British, Caribbean, African and Native American literatures — as well as seminars on diverse subjects like Shakespeare, critical theory, environmental writing, women’s poetry, and literature of the American West.

Professional Writing

The Professional Writing Concentration will help you develop the analytical skills and broad cultural perspective that make up the cornerstone of the English major. In this emphasis, however, you will also gain extensive practice in writing for a variety of audiences, purposes and genres including both written and oral workplace communication.

Students should consult the general English B.A. requirements. For this concentration, they must select 18 of their 45 credits from the following list: 

• at least one of ENGL 207, ENGL 208, ENGL 241, ENGL 290
• at least two of ENGL 309, ENGL 313, ENGL 316, ENGL 317, ENGL 318, ENGL 393
• at least two of ENGL 402, ENGL 419, ENGL 486, ENGL 496, ENGL 498

For the B.S. degree, you can specialize in technical writing or earn a general English degree. The B.S. is available either fully online or in-person in Moscow.
