A 2023 women’s leadership study from LeanIn.org and McKinsey & Co. found that American women held  40% of corporate management positions , and women continue to fight underrepresentation when it comes to  board positions and CEO roles . They also face gender bias, harassment, and opposition to their management styles.

Here’s how one MIT Sloan alumna has pushed back on those statistics and used what she’s learned along the way to help those behind her.

Lederman’s previous roles include CFO at Akina, director of impact investment at ShoreBank International, and country head and vice president of investment banking at JPMorgan.

Given what you know now, what would you tell your younger self about being a woman in your industry?

Don’t listen to the naysayers — the ones who say, “It’s not possible.” Focus on learning how markets, products, and sectors work. Observe and analyze how people in those sectors interact and what motivates them to accomplish tasks. Your path won’t always be linear. Leverage each of your experiences and draw on the experiences of those who have come before you.

Can you give an example of a time you’ve experienced or witnessed gender bias? How did it affect you professionally? What impact did it have on your job?

One of my earliest memories of gender bias is from working on a trading floor, and my sheer frustration when a call came into the desk from a West Coast branch manager who dismissed me and said that he wanted to “speak to one of the guys.” I knew I was more than up to the task. I was determined, persistent, and quickly ascertained from observing others what I needed to scale up my skills and knowledge. I remember being so proud and vindicated when that same branch manager would later call and request to speak to me because I was the one most able to deliver. 

What is the most difficult lesson you’ve learned in your professional life? In what unexpected ways did you grow from it? 

After moving to Zurich in 2008, I accepted a job as chief financial officer for a private equity manager. The previous CFO had been fired, and I had never been a CFO or a CPA with previous  Big Four audit experience, and I faced a very challenging remit: transforming back-office operations while still delivering quarterly reports to clients on funds in four different jurisdictions. Accounting and reporting were on massive and complicated Excel sheets, and the team was worn down and feeling beat up. I wanted the role, and I succeeded on many levels: managing through the financial crisis, transitioning the back office to new systems, setting up an external fund administration, delivering clean audits and quality reporting. 

Transformations like that are hard, intense, and nonstop. I learned that I am able to master new skills, accomplish a lot under tremendous stress, and still maintain a positive, can-do culture while working toward goals. But I also learned that after you’ve met the big challenge, it is also OK to redirect and not be constantly on a full-speed trajectory professionally.

What’s one specific way you tend to your well-being, and how do you encourage well-being among your staff?

Exercising regularly. I used to exercise before going into the office and always felt that I had started the day by accomplishing something for myself. I find that exercise is a good stress release, and it permits me to gain perspective on burning issues. I always encouraged my staff to go to the gym or to regularly participate in a sport. Sports have also been a way to tear down barriers between people and to develop team-building and leadership skills. 

What’s one skill or behavior women can adopt to make their career path more successful and more manageable? 

Seek role models and network, network, network. Not one of my jobs came from replying to an advertisement or through an executive search firm but from networking and asking for informational meetings with companies or people I thought were interesting, even posting on LinkedIn. My most recent board role came after I posted after the MIT Sloan Women’s Conference and I followed up with someone who looked at my post.

I subscribe to the “If you can see it, you can imagine it” approach. Look at those who have come before you, join alumni and sector networks, create your own support group, and absorb the lessons that the individuals in those groups demonstrate. My mom got her PhD when I was young and had a vibrant career much later in life. That gave me the confidence to know that while my path may not be linear, I can have impact and get exciting opportunities at different points in my career and life.

If you could snap your fingers and change one thing about workplaces, societal norms, or public policies that would most benefit women in the workforce, what would it be?

Being able to take the on- or off-ramp at different times should be easier, such as when you have children or follow your spouse’s career move. I have worked in different cultures, some where women have been expected to be home for lunch with kids every day. I was in a position where I could employ a nanny and have a supportive spouse, and I built a community to help when I had a weekly 7 a.m. meeting and my husband was traveling. I could drop off my daughter to have breakfast with another family, and she could then catch the school bus. Not everyone is in that position, and child care is a real challenge for families, even more so post-pandemic.

1. Previously Earned Graduate Degree

If you have already earned a graduate degree in a related field, some universities will often waive GRE requirements based on previous experience. Doctor of Nursing Practice is an example of such a degree.

2. Work Experience

Many reputable universities without GRE requirements may substitute the exam for work experience. This is particularly true for research-intensive programs where experience is more necessary than previous academic qualifications.

Same level of academic quality and excellence

You may not know that all graduate schools are accredited by the same educational body. It means that higher educational institutes in the United States have to follow and submit to quality guidelines that are also similar to other institutes.

GRE scores do not determine future academic success

An increasing number of graduate schools are putting less focus on GRE because recent research indicates that GRE scores do not correlate with future success. GRE scores are often misused by admissions committees

Which entry exams may be required by graduate schools in the U.S.?

GRE: It is the most common admission test for graduate schools in the United States. You will take exams in basic algebra, arithmetic, geometry, and data analysis. Written material and problems solving skills are also used to compare candidates.

GMAT: The GMAT exam is the most preferred admission test for admission into business schools. You will be assessed in analytical writing assessment, integrated reasoning, quantitative, and verbal sections.

Miller Analogies Test: The test is required for admission to specific degree programs. It is a high analytics test comprising of 120 questions in the form of an analogy.

TOEFL: This admission test is mandatory for international students whose native language is not English. It tests students for their ability to read, listen, write, and speak in the English language.

What is the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)?

The GRE will test you in three content areas, which include the analytical writing section, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning. The score ranges from 130 and 170, where the top 10% of all test takers score an average of 164.

GRE vs. GMAT: What’s the difference?

There are three key differences between the two tests. While GMAT is preferred by business schools, GRE is the choice for admission into most other U.S. grad programs.

Experts also believe that quantitative sections on GMAT are more difficult than GRE. In contrast, GRE can be difficult for non-native speakers as its verbal section contains more obscure words compared to GMAT.

Did you know that GRE candidates are allowed to return to their questions? In contrast, the GMAT format doesn’t allow candidates to go back to previous sections. This difference in format can increase your test anxiety when taking GMAT.

• 2 I got a Ph.D. without a thesis at Masters-level, if by this you mean either without obtaining a Masters or by obtaining a Masters without writing a thesis. I did the latter, which for me involved an oral exam, but many in the U.S. don't bother with a Masters first. In the U.S., at least in mathematics, one simply applies to and gets accepted to a graduate program after undergraduate, takes courses and passes the qualifying exam to be admitted to candidacy, then writes an acceptable dissertation. I assume that you have a Master's degree but not a Master's Thesis. The answer to your question depends on the location.

In the UK and the US , a Master's degree is not a requirement to start PhD studies, and therefore a Master's Thesis is also not a requirement. The admissions committee will compare your achievements with those of other students who only have a Bachelor's degree, and the expectations in terms of research output and thesis writing will correspond to that level.

In other locations, such as Germany , starting doctoral studies without a Master's degree is possible but very rare (unfortunately, the link is in German, but it says that only 1300 out of 108000 doctoral students that started on the winter semester 2011/2012 had no Master's degree).

The traditional way of starting doctoral studies in Germany is to contact a professor directly, and be selected by the professor, without the participation of any admissions committee. Professors will generally expect a Master's degree, and will want to have access to some of your research output to see how good your research is. They will by default look at your Master's Thesis for this, but you might be able to also get selected without a Master's Thesis if you have enough research output (publications or written reports of research projects).

There are also structured doctoral programs in Germany. These function in a similar way to PhD programs in the US/UK (with admissions committee and more course work), and are more likely to accept students without a Master's degree or thesis. These programs are, however, much less common than "traditional" doctoral studies as per the previous paragraph, so you might have a hard time finding one that interests you.

I have advised PhD students who had a masters when they started their doctoral studies, and others who didn't. I did not have a masters when I started my PhD. As noted in another answer, in some countries, having a masters is not required to start doctoral studies. This is, for example, also the case in Hong Kong.

what other criteria can [a prospective candidate] fill in order to approach a potential supervisor?

As an advisor, I would like to see a prospective doctoral student demonstrate ability to work independently. One of the principle differences between undergraduate and doctoral studies will be the expectation to perform independent research; many candidates fresh out of a bachelors degree may have never undertaken more substantial research than writing a term paper. A few examples of independent work could be:

• an undergraduate honors thesis or "capstone" project
• an engineering or software product
• an invention
• a community service project involving organization of meetings/town halls, etc. and/or interviews (could be especially desirable for students in the social sciences)
• an internship that led to a product (such as a company internal report)

When prospective graduate students without a masters degree approach me about starting doctoral studies, I generally recommend a graduate school path that allows the student to acquire a masters during the course of study. Such an option may provide a graceful "bail-out" option for both the student and advisor, for example if the student discovers after a year or two that research is not for her/him. I realize that such an arrangement is not an option in all countries.

You can still pursue a PhD after doing a non-thesis master's degree. Contrary to popular belief, the thesis master's degree is not the only path to doctoral studies and the world of academia. Although there are a few exceptions, you can enrol in many PhD programs after completing a non-thesis master's degree.

In India, it used to be the case that you can join a PhD with a master degree. It is not necessary to have a masters that requires writing a thesis. E.g., A MCA(master in computer application) (where writing a thesis is NOT part of the course) degree holder can join PhD in computer science. It is not necessary to have a MTech (where writing a thesis is usually part of the course). Now it is also possible to join PhD even with a BTech degree(Again, where writing a thesis is NOT part of the course).

Lindner College of Business has launched the Quantitative Finance graduate certificate, which provides relevant financial context to modern quantitative tools in the merging spheres of finance and technology, or "fintech," such econometric analysis, machine learning, programming, blockchain and large language models.

Lindner graduate certificates allow students to gain specialized business knowledge to enhance their career options. Quantitative Finance can be completed in one to two semesters of study. The certificate can be taken as a standalone certificate or is easily combined with a Lindner MBA or one of the college’s other Master of Science programs, particularly Applied Economics , Business Analytics , Finance and Information Systems .

Quantitative Finance can be fulfilled through in-person and online modalities and is accepting applications for the spring 2025 semester. Prior experience or academic training in finance or analytics is helpful, but not required, for this certificate.

The curriculum features a compulsory two-credit-hour course in quantitative equity investing. Students must also complete two separate three-credit-hour courses, with two options for each course slot. Finally, students must fulfill four elective credit hours, with a trio of two-credit-hour courses to select from.

This certificate matches up with a range of job opportunities and career fields, from loan officers and financial, operations and portfolio managers, to budget, credit, equity, and financial and investment analysts.

Many reputable institutions and colleges offer master's degrees in finance. Scholarships and Financial Aid will be awarded at the time of matriculation. Additional scholarships will be awarded to those applying from Cornell programs.

Financial Aid

The Department of Geography strives to support every student admitted to the program, within the constraints of available resources. Support typically includes some work as a teaching assistant or research assistant and some fellowship stipend to allow students time for their own work.

Students with the most successful academic records are nominated for, and generally receive,  multi-year university fellowships  of stipends plus tuition for two years. Combined with department support in the form of teaching or research assistantships and stipends for two more years, these provide four years of support, with a fifth year of stipend for advancing to candidacy within normative time. Other students are typically offered at least one semester of teaching assistantship and one semester of full or partial stipend for the first three years, with a fourth year of stipend for advancing to candidacy within normative time.

In later years, the department and dissertation advisors support students in applying for any national grants for which they are eligible. Over the last ten years, our students have been awarded an average of around $100,000 a year in extramural funding. In addition, we have enough teaching assistantships for advanced students to bridge gaps in fellowship support.

STUDENT PARENTS

If you have children, you are eligible for various forms of aid from the Graduate Division – above and beyond any Department support.

One of the most important is a “Parent Grant” which provides up to $8,000 of additional stipend per academic year for child support. There is also subsidized Family Student Housing and Day Care. For more information and deadlines see the  Financial Support for Student Parents page.

(DS421) NSF RESEARCH TRAINING PROGRAM

DS421 is an two-year interdisciplinary graduate training program with the mission to prepare a new generation of researchers and policy makers to address challenges at the intersection of natural, social and data sciences by translating data into evidence-based analysis of impacts and solutions.  The DS421 program is open to incoming and first year PhD students from all departments and schools at UC Berkeley. 

The program seeks a diverse cohort of students with a desire to pursue interdisciplinary research addressing coupled human-natural systems with a strong quantitative, data science component.  Applicants should have a background in one or more of the following areas: natural or environmental science, social science, public policy, landscape architecture, environmental planning, statistics, computer science, or related fields.

The Graduate Hotels brand—now known as Graduate by Hilton —has, throughout the years, become synonymous with college town accommodation that doesn’t suck. The brand has achieved this through its meticulous attention to detail and a tongue-in-cheek design attitude that makes staying at a Graduate property an experience in itself.

( I recently interviewed the brand’s founder, Ben Weprin , whose vision to transform the dreary accommodation options of university towns has resulted in 34 Graduate hotel properties around the world.)

Graduate’s latest property, Graduate Princeton , is further testament to Weprin’s vision. The 180-room property opened earlier this month in Princeton’s historic Nassau Street, directly opposite the university’s campus. It’s the first hotel to open in Princeton in nearly 90 years—and only the second hotel downtown, nearly doubling the number of available hotel rooms in town.

“When we started Graduate ten years ago, Princeton was at the top of our list,” Weprin said. “The history, the heritage, the backdrop, the charm, the sophistication—it’s just the idea of what somebody envisions college looks like in America.”

Weprin's firm, AJ Capital Partners, meticulously restored, modernized, and expanded the 1918-era, Colonial Revival-style former university dormitory in partnership with architecture firm Stonehill Taylor. The hotel’s design pays homage to Princeton’s local culture, lore, and traditions, including subtle (and not-so-subtle) references to the university and the town’s 275-year history. Think nods to influential alumni, local architecture, and storied traditions synonymous with the Princeton student experience.

Upon entering Graduate Princeton’s Gothic library-inspired lobby, guests are greeted by a hand-carved wooden reception desk flanked by four wooden statues of the school’s beloved mascot, the Tiger. Floor tiles rendered in Princeton’s signature orange and black anchor the lobby, which lined with thousands of books and a collection of colorfully embroidered vintage Reunions Jackets—a token received by alumni at their 25th reunion.

A 30-foot carved wooden study table, a staple in every Graduate, is reminiscent of the historic libraries on campus and serves as a place for visitors and students to study, gather, and connect. The names of Princeton’s storied eating clubs are painted in gold leaf on the library bookcases that frame the space. On the opposite end of the lobby is Ye Tavern, the hotel’s bar and restaurant, named after a storied 1930s-era bar that once occupied the site.

Ye Tavern takes design cues from its namesake. A carved wooden bar—recalling the lancet windows found throughout campus—is a focal point of the space. Leather-topped banquettes weave through the center of the space, punctuated by stone-top tables. Inside the guest rooms, references to Princeton’s color palette are carried throughout, with orange-and-white seersucker drapes matching an apricot-hued carpet. Bedside lamps inspired by the Revolutionary War-era cannon buried behind Nassau Hall sit beside custom bed frames featuring hand-drawn illustrations referencing the university’s annual Cane Spree—Princeton’s first organized intramural event dating back to the 1860s.

Each room also features framed artwork referencing some of the university’s most storied traditions. Guest bathrooms feature custom wallpaper inspired by the campus’ renowned arboretum, paired with a framed sketch by Albert Einstein, a reference to his time working for Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study.

To find out more about the recent launch, we spoke to some key members of the Graduate Princeton team below.

I'd love more details about how the team tackled the unique architectural challenge of renovating a former student dorm building from 1918. What elements of the building were preserved, and how challenging was that to do?

Michael Monarca, general manager, Graduate Princeton:

In order to preserve the building’s history and character, we meticulously restored the original façade, brick by brick. Additionally, we ensured that the materials we used in the new building echoed the design of the original 1918 structure, such as the pre-cast concrete coping.

While we weren't able to keep everything from the original structure, we preserved as much as we could. We were able to keep the original floors and key structural elements, but the glass windows were replaced to optimize energy efficiency.

The biggest challenge was creating a seamless transition between the 1918-era structure and the newly-built portion of the hotel. This was a significant undertaking as it involved re-working the structural design to connect both buildings. The end result is beautiful!

What design elements make this property uniquely Princeton? The school and town have a rich history—how is this history celebrated in the design details of the rooms and property, and, wider than that, in the guest experience?

At Graduate Princeton, we have two buildings merging together: one which is over 100 years old, and another which is brand new. In the same vein, Graduate Princeton is a new hotel that celebrates the history of the town and university.

During the process of researching the original building where Graduate Princeton resides, we learned about a restaurant that once existed in the basement. The local resident who told us this story knew of the restaurant because her great grandfather owned a barber shop right across from it called “Jack Honore’s Barber Shop,” which was a Princeton staple for many years. The resident often spent Friday evenings sharing Manhattans with her grandfather up until his passing. We went to the Princeton Historical Society to find out more, and found newspaper advertisements from 1927 confirming the existence of “Ye Tavern.”

In order to pay tribute to the building’s history, and to thank the resident for sharing this story, we not only named the restaurant “Ye Tavern” after the original establishment, but the Manhattan on our menu is now named “In Honore of Jack!”

There is a tradition at Princeton University known as the “Cane Spree,” which began in the 1860’s. In this time, when “gentlemen” would walk with a walking stick or cane, the University’s sophomores decided to create a rule that freshmen could no longer carry canes, and the sophomores would wrestle the canes away from the freshmen. This eventually turned into Princeton’s first organized intramural event, and has evolved today into a multi-sport class competition—almost like a field day. To honor this tradition, all of the headboards in our guest rooms are fashioned out of canes, which feature unique carvings that celebrate the rich history of both the university and the town of Princeton.

Finally, why is this such an exciting opening for the Graduate brand—and what makes the Princeton property stand out?
