a) Describe Seng Group’s vision
A vision statement outlines a company's desires to accomplish in the long-run, commonly in a time frame of five or ten years, or sometimes longer. It will plan what the organization would like to achieve and gives purpose to the existence of the organization.
Regarding the case study, Seng Group's vision is to maintain its position as the market leader in the petrol station development sector. To accomplish this progress of the vision, it is proven that Seng Group is well-known as the company that operates more than 100 of the approximately 400 BHPetrol Stations in the peninsula.
b) Based on the case study, describe how the company’s philosophy can help to enhance its mission
It is stated that Seng Group's mission is to commit to providing a one-stop solution for all petrol station needs. Meanwhile, their philosophy is to serve the community irrespective of where they live. Thus, they are dedicated to providing the facilities to fulfill the customer's needs.
Firstly, the Seng Group now provides more fuel options to the motorist who uses the Port Dickson-KL International Airport stretch. Despite only serving the services, they also give job opportunities and minimize the illegal sales of petroleum products. These practices have proved that Seng Group fulfill the communities needs notwithstanding places they live.
Moreover, they have a plan to open another station in the small town of Batu Balai, Jerantut Pahang. This is due to their concern of the customers that have to travel 25km to Jerantut or 35km towards Benta just to fuel up. This practices also shows that they are worrying and want to solve the problems.
Discuss with example three (3) types of strategies taken by Seng Group.
There are many strategies that we can implied in our company. But for Seng Group, they have implied a few strategies for their company. The first strategy is product development. Product development is a strategy that seeks increased sales by improving or modifying present products or services. In Seng Group, they have provided the transportation to deliver products to service stations throughout Malaysia. This is because, they want to ensure they have distributed a high quality and full quantity of their product to the destinations. Besides that, Seng Group has become a supplier of petroleum products by supplying it to the subsidiary company.
Next strategy is market development. Market development is a strategy involves introducing present products or services into new geographic areas. In this case study, Seng Group now operates more than 100 of the approximately 400 BHPetrol stations in peninsula and decided to open more petrol stations in a rural area.
Lastly, the strategy that implied by Seng Group is unrelated diversification. Unrelated diversification is when the business value chains are so dissimilar that no competitively valuable cross-business relationships exist. In this case study, Seng Group diversified into development of commercial property, oil palm plantation, livestock farming and transportation that are not related to their nature of business. As we know, their nature of business is petrol station, but not only that, they also developing commercial, residential, shopping malls and factories.
Discuss two (2) importance of R&D (Research and Development) factors that can be applied to any two (2) of Seng Group’s major business.
Research and development (R&D) include activities that companies undertake to innovate and introduce new products and services. It is often the first stage in the development process. Seng Group’s major business is petrol station business. They multiply petrol station network and venture in related business such as wholesale of petroleum products, bunkering and providing solution to build petrol stations. If there is no research and development being done, the company might outsource the delivery to other couriers, this will be incurred high cost as they need to pay other couriers their services, storage fee and transportation fee and expenditure will become more than revenues. By doing research and development, Seng Group come to decision to make their own transportation services. The implementation of research and development process can be seen in palm oil business. In general, to start this type of business, they will need a very large capital as the expenses is quite big before they can get return. They need to do an intensive research on the palm oil tree, the type of fertilizer needed and the maturity period before it can be harvested. They need to come out with high quality product to stay competitive in the market or they will face losses.
