‘Miss India’ movie review: This chai needed more zing

Despite keerthy suresh and jagapathi babu, this under-brewed tale of tea-coffee business rivalry falls flat.

November 04, 2020 01:40 pm | Updated 01:56 pm IST

Sangeetha Devi Dundoo

Keerthy Suresh in the film

  • Cast: Keerthy Suresh, Jagapathi Babu, Naveen Chandra and Sumanth Shailendra
  • Direction: Narendra Nath
  • Music: S S Thaman
  • Streaming on: Netflix

Debut director Narendra Nath who has written Miss India (streaming on Netflix in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam) along with Tharun Kumar, pits a young woman who hails from a middle class Indian family against a business giant in the US. Why the US? Because the idea is to sell Indian chai in a coffee-dominated market. A girl who understands the therapeutic effects of chai with different herbs made by her grandfather, an Ayurvedic practitioner (Rajendra Prasad), wants the world to appreciate it. Narendra Nath also weaves in issues of cut-throat business and everyday sexism.

Manasa Samyuktha (Keerthy Suresh, who insists she isn’t just Samyuktha but Manasa Samyuktha through the film)’s family lives in Lambasingi near Visakhapatnam. Samyuktha is a class topper and when asked about her future plans, says she wants to be a businesswoman. Even as a passing reference, we don’t get a hint of who or what inspired her.

Years later, when the family falls on hard times, her mother (Nadhiya) and older brother (Kamal Kamaraju) assert that she should look for a job that guarantees financial security. It’s a familiar conversation one would hear in many homes. This argument continues even after the family shifts to San Francisco where the brother has landed himself in a well-paying job and affords a spacious villa.

Samyuktha’s gradual transition from India to the US is shown more through her styling than through the cultural changes. To give credit where it’s due, the director doesn’t make her an overnight woman of power. There’s enough room to show her trying to find her voice and assert herself.

There are hints to show that Samyuktha is no pushover — when she turns up in a black outfit after Naveen Chandra tells her that it wouldn’t suit her, and when she tells a colleague that a bridegroom cannot be ‘a good match’ if he and his family expect her to give up her dreams. And no, she doesn’t agree to a man’s proposal of ‘a simple life, a simple wife’ — in other words, a life with no scope for her entrepreneurial dreams.

When she takes the first step towards her business, the director creates ‘mass’ moments. She has an idea, which is snubbed by the proprietor of a coffee chain, Kailash Shiva Kumar (Jagapathi Babu). In return, she remarks that fate will decide whether she will reach his level of success or surge past him. For all that smart talk, she hasn’t even done a Google check on him. She doesn’t know what he looks like when they first meet!

Nevertheless, the business tug of war has a few fun moments to show that Samyuktha is a smart cookie. It could have definitely been a smarter battle of wits.

Miss India (the name of her chai brand) is well intentioned to show a woman fulfilling her dreams but it would have benefited from better writing than lame lines such as “Coffee is not my cup of tea”.

Also, chai isn’t alien to the US. Many Indian restaurants serve it and there’s the Chai Tea Latte of Starbucks. Just saying.

This chai- coffee tale feels underbrewed, despite the efforts of Keerthy Suresh and Jagapathi Babu. Rajendra Prasad and VK Naresh manage to make a mark within the limited scope their characters are given. Sumanth Shailendra fits the bill of a venture capitalist

Miss India seems to sell only chai; there’s no glimpse of short eats to go with the cuppa. It feels incomplete, just like the film.

Keerthy Suresh’s Miss India review: Not everyone's cup of tea

Litty Simon

‘Business is war. It’s not just business, it’s personal!’ reads a board at an established coffee company in America. And for Manasa Samyuktha (Keerthy Suresh) from Miss India movie which was released on Netflix on Wednesday, the war had indeed been a personal one.

Even while being a kid, she set her goal- to pursue MBA and start a business. She hails from a middle-class family from Andhra Pradesh's Lambasingi and as time passes tragedy strikes. Her father is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Her grandfather passes away.

Along with her family, she relocates to the US after her brother gets a job. While she still cherishes her dream of becoming a businesswoman, her family refuses to acknowledge her goal.

Manasa Samyukta finally agrees to take up a job as per her brother's  wish.

‘Coffee is not my cup of tea’ is how Manasa Samyuktha puts it when asked for a coffee and thus decides to venture into Indian Chai business in America with the brand name Miss India.

miss india movie review in telugu

Keerthy’s Manasa manages to set up her tea business and take on KSK Coffee, a competitive coffee chain in the US headed by Kailash Shiva Kumar (Jagapathi Babu). Business is war, and it is this war the movie less depicts.

The concept and thread line to make a film on a woman entrepreneur are well conceived. But the script doesn’t really convince us -- rather it fails to inspire.

We get to see an ambitious woman who strives to achieve success, but the situations are bland, absurd and clumsy.

“You are the owner of your life, founder and sole proprietor of it. You are going to miss out on an opportunity. We should be our only competitor…” one gets to hear such philosophical lines -- Preachier than motivating.

In a scene, where Manasa’s colleague explains how she had been asked by her family to quit job after marriage, Manasa’s dialogues doesn’t empathize and only melodramatise.

With misogynistic dialogues, the film also aims to highlight the struggles of women in a male-dominated society who expect women to be “simple wives for easy lives”.

If the first half, which shows Manasa and her family's struggle, is a laggard, the second half tests our patience to reel out a predictable success story.

Having said that, there are certain moments that do work. The mass moments here goes to Keerthy Suresh, who effortlessly carries the film on her shoulder. With expensive cars and outfits in tow, she is a stunner in every frame.

The other star who grabs attention is Jagapathi Babu, but more than his villainy avatar, he tends to stray to the funny terrain – The final scene proves it.

Probably, the one reason why the film fails to connect could be because it fails to make us believe that the film is set in the US.

Almost everyone understands and talks in Telugu!

Though Miss India runs high on dreams, it is low on fulfilling it. To sum up, the film might not be everyone’s cup of tea!

5 reasons to watch Keerthy Suresh’s new Telugu movie ‘Miss India’

5 reasons to watch Keerthy Suresh’s Telugu movie Miss India on Netflix this week. The story of an underdog who takes on the business world.

Take Oscar-winning director  Bong Joon Ho’s advice to heart . The South Korean director of the film ‘Parasite’ won the Oscar for best film and in his acceptance speech, said, “Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” That’s exactly why you need to step into good cinema in 2020 with language no longer being a barrier. This week, as Keerthy Suresh’s new Telugu movie  Miss India  airs on  Netflix , it’s about latching onto the spirit of the movie, the gumption of a determined girl and discovering a stellar cast from the south.

Telugu movies have indeed been experimenting with genres, ideas, and off-beat themes in the last two years. We had beautifully shot films like  Goodachari ,  Penguin , and the latest cinematic feat  Gatham , that will blow your mind with stunning shots and quirky storylines.

5 reasons to watch Keerthy Suresh’s Miss India movie –

miss india movie review in telugu

Miss India,  directed by debutant Narendra Nath and headlined by Keerthy Suresh, releases on Netflix today and it’s already garnering points for its interesting premise and an insider’s approach to entrepreneurship – the struggles, the win, and the challenges. For those looking to avoid subtitles, dubbed versions in Tamil and Malayalam are available. We picked out five reasons why this should be in your must-watch list this week.

The heart-tugging storyline: The real story of Miss India  movie –

A girl from a middle-class family dreams of becoming an entrepreneur and taking her tea brand Miss India across the world. The story of an underdog and a woman at that – what’s not to love and root for. It’s essentially the story of Samyukta who moves to the US to make her chai dreams come true with her grandfather’s advice, played beautifully by Rajendra Prasad. And it’s her journey, making it in business outside your home country. It’s riddled with inspiration and copious amounts of business advice. The anti-hero comes in the form of another Indian origin entrepreneur, masterfully played by Jagapathi Babu, who sells coffee. A typical underdog meets a privileged enemy story at the core and at a time like this where inspiration is at an all-time low, this story might just give you a refresher course on dreams and the power they have on us.

Entertainment Kaali Khuhi on Netflix: What makes this Shabana Azmi horror movie a must-watch

Keerthy Suresh alone has been the driving force of many movies in the last few years. Her 2018 hit  Mahanati  was heavy, laden with the burden of a biopic but Keerthy carried it on her shoulders beautifully.  Miss India  was the first film she had signed after  Mahanati  while looking for light-hearted projects. In her next film  Good Luck Sakhi,  she plays a shooter. Inline are big projects – a Mahesh Babu starrer  Sarkaru Vaari Paata  in Telugu, a Rajinikanth starrer  Annatthe  in Tamil and a Mohanlal starrer  Marakkar  in Malayalam alongside another Telugu movie  Rang De  with Nithiin. If her acting chops in  Mahanati  are anything to go by alongside the slow-motion shots in  Miss India , you know it’s a Keerthy movie all along. She’s the heart, soul, and spirit of the movie.

miss india movie review in telugu

The stunning cast

Romance is not what the movie is offering as a takeaway, and that’s a refreshing move by the director. So you see the movie is peppered with character actors who are well-known in the Telugu industry. There’s Rajendra Prasad, a veteran actor playing her mentor, Jagapathi Babu, another actor with great acting chops as the villain and her challenger. Naresh and Nadhiya as her mother and father who reluctantly support her dreams with a dose of reality whenever it’s needed.

The Cast of Miss India movie

The music

The music is composed by S. Thaman released on Aditya Music label. And as you already know, Thaman is known for his thumping, refreshing take on music and his tunes are memorable. The songs have hummable value, especially the  Kotthaga Kotthaga  sung by Shreya Ghoshal and  Lacha Gummadi , which was sung by Srivardhini. It’s a Thaman musical so expect music to fill in the gaps and settle into the storytelling beautifully.

Miss India on Netflix

The dialogues we need to hear

The whole movie is peppered with inspiring lines and massy punchlines. But at the heart of it is the ambition of a girl. There’s advice her dad gives her that resonates with the spirit of our times. For instance, her father’s advise at age 8, on how good grades in school mean nothing unless she has a goal in life. Or Keerthy’s character replying to her mom who admonishes her with ‘You won’t find a better boy than this’ with ‘He won’t find a better girl than me’. Go for the story but cheer for the dialogues.

  • Trivia Keerthy Suresh takes on 50 look tests: The film, directed by debutante Narendra Nath, is said to feature Keerthy in multiple looks over various time-lines. Trust Keerthy Suresh to get into the skin of every character she takes on. For her forthcoming film, Miss India, the actress has completely transformed herself to look the part. The film, directed by debutante Narendra Nath, is said to feature Keerthy in multiple looks over various time-lines. To get her look right, apart from shedding a few kilos, Keerthy also did extensive research. "She pursued a fashion course after her college, and that helped her in understanding what looks her character has to possess," says Narendra. Although the film is not a costume drama, interestingly, Keerthy took on more than 50 look trials to get it right with her multiple looks. Narendra adds: "For each look, she had around 10 look tests; as there are multiple looks in the film, she had to sit through more than 50 look tests overall to get the right look for her role. And honestly, her knack of effortlessly slipping into the character really surprises him. She was quick to understand the emotional arch her character goes through, and accordingly, got accustomed to the look. She was very patient and never had any airs," adds Narendra. Miss India Movie Review: A woman sells tea in the US at the expense of us

Rating: ( 1.5 / 5).

Look, let me state the obvious first. Any film that celebrates a woman, an underdog in most societies, especially ours, holds value. Any film that has a woman at its centre, that discusses the problems of her life, holds a certain utility. But this isn’t to say at all that any of this can save a film from being an insufferable bore. Miss India is a film that looks to turn the tables on the conventional hero-rises-in-business template, by having a woman at its centre. The ‘troubled’ family, the worshipping cinematography… it’s all there. There’s even the additional layer of how the villain here is just a symbol of oppressive men, of an oppressive patriarchal system that won’t allow a woman to even dream in peace. Soon as Keerthy Suresh’s character vocalises her dream, the stifling responses come at her. But let us guard against the pitfalls of attributing too much feminist importance to this well-meaning but flawed film. It’s a film with wooden performances from supporting characters, bad dialogues, one too many contrived moments, and quite a bit of problematic portrayal too—like that Alzheimer’s patient who almost gets used as comic relief. This film that tries to mean well for women has its central character, Manasa Samyuktha (Keerthy Suresh), telling a date that should a woman say that she’s thinking about a decision, it means it’s a yes, and that should she say yes, then she shouldn’t be thought of as a woman at all. To borrow a modern idiom, the mind really boggles.

Director: Narendra Nath

Cast: Keerthy Suresh, Jagapathi Babu, Rajendra Prasad, Nadhiya

Streaming on: Netflix

It’s the film equivalent of that elderly person in every family who’s intolerable for how they always dole out sanctimonious advice. You could easily create one of those superficial self-improvement books using many of the ideas in here. The film begins with a line about how greatness is a quality that’s neither acquired through the recognition of others nor lost through a lack of acknowledgement. It’s said once more in the film. Manasa’s brother gifts her a watch but not before uttering, “Time is the most valuable thing.” Someone else says a strange line about how compromise is a close friend, how a lie is a neighbour, and how an adjustment is a lover. Manasa is constantly talking about the utility of taking risks. Another character declares that if you don’t build your dreams, someone else will hire you to build theirs. My personal favourite is when a solemn Samyuktha shares that struggle cannot be purchased at a shop. Wait, did someone think you could? The film is a treasure trove for those who like to deck their walls with posters of superficial lines masquerading as profound wisdom.

The situations are mostly laughable. A man, who gets an unlikely chance to work in America, is asking his entire family (including his grandfather) to join him there, as though he were embarking on a tourist trip. Samyuktha who is apparently allowed to start a business there, throws shade at an NRI man for abandoning his Indian roots (and for some reason, he doesn’t ask her what she’s doing in America then). Male characters can often be found saying stupid statements or asking ludicrous questions, only so Samyuktha can take them down with easy retorts and come across as a strong woman worthy of Thaman’s background music. Like the HR head whose sole question in the interview is, “Why should I hire you, a woman, when there are three men waiting outside?” Samyuktha goes on to answer it like she had already read about it in "Most Famous Interview Questions". She tries to talk about the value she can bring as a woman, and for some reason, mentions birthing babies. The interviewer, perhaps excited by the suggestion, says that her answers were electrifying. I wished I were being electrocuted.

All characters in Miss India are cardboard cutouts, and masters in bad dialogues and exaggerated emoting. They are all perhaps liars too, because though Samyuktha’s family keeps talking about how poor they are, you barely see any evidence of it, be in the clothes they wear or the houses they live in. A man offers to take Samyuktha on a date, and on the day, takes her to an apparel shop first, without the girl ever getting offended. The central idea of this coffee-tea rivalry plays out like a fanciful game between toddlers. What more can you say of a film that’s set in America, but one that doesn’t have a single character speaking in American English?

It’s so hard to feel anything for this film, for its characters, that towards the end when Samyuktha is saying something powerful—about how women transform a house into a family, about how they turn happiness into love—I couldn’t wait to be put out of my misery. So used was I by then to Samyuktha’s generic one-liners masquerading as empowerment that I related more to the response of Jagapathi Babu (playing an infantile businessman), who rolls his eyes in seeming boredom.

Look, as I began saying in this review, it’s useful that Samyuktha is being shown to be a dogged woman, as someone who won’t compromise on her ambition, but in a film as dull, the messaging never even hits the runway, let alone take off. While suffering through this 2-hour-20-minute-long torment, I dimly remembered that one-liner said by Samyuktha’s brother: Time is the most valuable thing. Sometimes, it feels like film critics understand this better than anyone else.

Miss India, On Netflix, Is Old Tea In A New Kettle

At the beginning of the film, Manasa Samyuktha (Keerthy Suresh) is shown brewing a delicious cup of chai . Yes, " chai ". According to the film, if you ask a waiter in an American restaurant whether they serve " chai ", they will definitely understand what you mean. Manasa earlier calls herself a " tea addict" (not a " chai addict", mind you) but does not bother when it comes to using the word "tea" anywhere else.

For a story based on a woman who wishes to create a business empire for Indian chai in the US, Narendra Nath's Miss India is surprisingly childish and myopic in its approach.

But where was I? Ah yes, Manasa Samyuktha is shown brewing a delicious cup of chai . Not just "Manasa". Not just "Samyuktha". Manasa Samyuktha . The makers intend to make us remember her full name throughout the film, and without fail. I do not blame them. If there is anything worth remembering about this poorly-written character, it is her name and Keerthy Suresh's performance. Everywhere she goes, she ensures that she introduces her full name to people, but what is weird is when everybody keeps calling her Manasa Samyuktha everywhere and every time. Not just "Manasa". Not just "Samyuktha". Manasa Samyuktha .

Once again, I digressed from the point I was making about her brewing delicious chai; however, that is exactly how the film is – it is confused (and unclear, despite praising its protagonist for her "clarity") and has a lot to say, but ends up sidelining the very topic it is based on: chai . The opening sequence is breathtaking; the camera hovers lovingly over each ingredient used to make the special chai, and we perceive every little detail involved – be it the vapours emerging from the cup or the drops of milk mixed with the aromatic spices – almost as if we are seeing it through Manasa's eyes. Therefore, we close our own to accept this beautiful vision which the makers have provided us, raise it to our lips to taste it … and it is bland. Cold. Because Miss India is no different from old tea in a new kettle.

Through flashbacks, we are introduced to Manasa and her middle-class family. It is the classic underdog story. They are all sedulous, hardworking people, who work even harder to rub it on our faces that they are sedulous and hardworking. Even after they move to San Francisco, they continue to stress the fact that they are middle-class people and are struggling to earn money, which makes little sense because there was a mention of Manasa's brother pursuing robotics (the film is ambiguous about several things that way), which should ideally be providing them with a lot of income. Before their move, the family is struck by misfortune, and the sudden obstacles thrown into the story make the whole situation appear staged, fake, and almost forced; they are not of grave importance, because these are frantic efforts of the makers to showcase the female lead as fierce and determined in the face of trouble, and definitely not to provide any depth to her character. It is so clichéd that you can see these coming a mile away:

1) Father is diagnosed with stage-five Alzheimer's? Check. He cannot work? Check. The family loses its only earning member? Check.

2) Selfish sister chooses to marry? Check. The family disowns a potential earning member? Check. More money troubles for the family? Check.

3) Grandfather dies? Check. The family is grief-stricken? Check. All right, now pack them off to the US.

Like many other things in this film (such as Manasa's habit of looking at her feet while lying, or the significance of her rocking a black dress, for instance), these events are conveniently forgotten.

Keerthy Suresh's character is so poorly written that we are as clueless about her aspirations as she is. When somebody asks her what she wishes to pursue, she simply says, "Business". Business? What business? The way in which she achieves her dreams is so preposterous that we cannot help but roll our eyes. Armed with a thousand dollars, she spends it all on some of the worst marketing strategies I have ever seen, and yet, she astonishingly garners fame and appreciation faster than you can say "Manasa Samyuktha". She establishes the company of Miss India and we wonder what her inspiration for the name was, which is yet another thing that the makers don't bother explaining. It is perhaps expected that we will be awed and clap when she spouts motivational quotes (or the history of chai ) every five minutes or when she magically solves her problems with these same quotes, but I promise you, my eyes were suffering from the severe after-effects of rolling them all the time. It also did not help when I realized that a quote by Swami Vivekananda – which was used in the conclusion – was a silent joke, as the director's name matches the philosopher's birth name: Narendra Nath.

Keerthy Suresh tries her best, and perhaps she deserves a cup of chai for this, unlike the others in the movie. Miss India reminded me of Keerthy's previous disastrous OTT venture, Penguin . The screenplay, the dialogues, and the characters are no better that the latter. The dudes in the film try to appear romantic and professional, but end up with stiff expressions. Characters play Truth or Dare in a pub, of all places. The female lead is praised for explaining the concept of a SWOT analysis to her friends who are also pursuing the same degree as her. Every single Indian in Miss India coincidentally speaks Telugu. The antagonist is Telugu, the investor is Telugu, random strangers are Telugu, and in a ridiculous twist, even the Americans in the film comprehend Telugu. (This reminded me of French people speaking Telugu in World Famous Lover ). A proficient coffee-manufacturing rival (Jagapathi Babu) employs a senseless tactic to combat Manasa's growth by stationing bikini-clad women to serve coffee to his customers, and I shudder to think of how he might have achieved this position. The fact that not a single American in his Board bothered questioning it (they praised it, for god's sake) makes me shudder some more. This is also a man who has a subordinate ready to provide a five-minute introduction for him every time he meets somebody. I half-expected him to throw a clever Boston Tea Party joke when Manasa nearly went bankrupt, in an attempt to redeem his character. Sadly, he didn't.

This is the story of a woman who battles sexism and intense rivalry to achieve prominence. Yes, the sexism is shown everywhere – be it her brother refusing her help to carry their luggage, or during the arranged marriage family drama. But despite all this, Manasa Samyuktha does not appear as a strong, independent woman who emerges victorious in a battle against chauvinism. Whatever she attains in her life is due to the men who flock around her; she barely seems to have any agency of her own. She gets her first job from a man who is clearly attracted to her, gets an investor who is clearly attracted to her, earns her first thousand dollars from a rival who sees her as a "hot" or "beautiful" woman rather than a contender with mettle and talent, and acquires a chai recipe and a life goal from her grandfather. Whatever obstacles she overcomes, whatever she achieves, seems to be purely due to luck, rather than her own intelligence and planning. I am sorry, Narendra Nath, but plainly depicting a woman who refuses to marry is not how you show how capable she is. Be it the business angle, or the sexism themes, or even the recipe of the special chai , this was, simply put, not my cup of tea. A rushed (and absurd) climax sequence and an unnecessary plot twist gave me the post- Penguin cringe. If anything, the beautiful shots of San Francisco and the music by S. Thaman are the only relieving factors.

Miss India tries to fill its empty cup of a plot with too many things, but it ends up spilling all over. There is nothing significant about the title either. You could call it 'Manasa Samyuktha' for all I care, and nobody would bat an eyelid.

Miss India Review: Keerthy Suresh's film has a childish script treating corporate war like a child's play

Zoom Digital

Miss India, starring Keerthy Suresh, Jagapathi Babu, Naveen Chandra and Sumanth Sailendra, is streaming on Netflix. In this review, we tell you how the film messes it up.

Miss India review

Miss India is the kind of corporate drama where the protagonist is full of virtues and love, while the antagonist is an accursed businessman who behaves like a mafia leader. For decades, Telugu cinema has failed to outgrow this immature caricaturing of businessmen. What makes watching Jagapathi Babu all the more painful in this film is that he has played the typical role at least twice in recent years - in Nannaku Prematho and Maharshi . Even his salt-and-pepper look has started smacking of routineness.

Manasa Samyuktha (Keerthy Suresh) was all of 8 when she was told by her father (VK Naresh) that coming first in the class is of no use if she doesn't have a defined goal in life (imagine an 8-year-old being shamed for not declaring her life ambition). Days later, after being shamed by her atrocious father, she comes up with a definite dream: 'I will do an MBA and become a businesswoman'. That's it. The universe conspires to bring Vikram (Sumanth Shailendra) into existence in America so he can become the angel investor Manasa needs 15 years later.

Circumstances push her and her family (comprising of a selfish brother, a notoriously cliched mother, and Alzheimer's-stricken father) to move base to the United States. Once there, our heroine, a self-confessed tea addict, struggles to find tea. It is because her new-found friend Vijay Anand (Naveen Chandra) tells her poetically, "America is a Land of Coffee'. This intensifies her hate for coffee, which she drinks only when she is irritated. Days later, after a couple of visits to random public places in San Francisco, our heroine asks herself: "Why not introduce tea and convert America into a tea-loving nation?"

Here's a little Tea-ser of all the fun we had on the #MissIndia set https://t.co/jleAAhfr65 @NARENcloseup @Tharun__Kumar @MusicThaman @smkoneru @gopiprasannaa @EastCoastPrdns @NetflixIndia pic.twitter.com/3YEXEqgJ5z — Keerthy Suresh (@KeerthyOfficial) November 3, 2020

Before you know, she and her two friends (Pujitha Ponnada and Divya Drishti, who have done an MBA but don't know the meaning of SWOT Analysis) start making chai and pose a competition to the villain's chain of coffee shops. How? Because they make chai with love, unlike the villain's employees who make coffee without love. Not kidding. This is shown as the sole reason for Manasa Samyuktha's phenomenal, miraculous, inexplicably quick rise with meager resources at her service.

Ten Americans tell her that her chai is good and this has our heroine's self-confidence on steroids. She walks up to the villain who is a million times richer than her, talks like she is equal, and threatens to teach him a fitting lesson. From this point, the ruthless villain starts shooting himself in the foot. At one point, she manages to take away one million dollars from him in the film's umpteenth slow-mo walking scene.

If there is one thing that is sane in the movie, it's Keerthy Suresh's restrained performance. It's a miracle that she didn't go overboard even when the script invited her to screw up the audience.

Miss India is the latest film from Tollywood to skip theatrical release for OTT release. It is sure to grab attention with popular actors like Keerthy Suresh, Jagapathi Babu, Nadhiya and others playing principal characters. But Miss India ends up as another disappointment in the trend of direct to digital releases.

What is it about?

Manasa Samyukhtha (Keerthy Suresh) dreams of becoming a successful businesswoman from her childhood itself. She wants to make the Ayurvedic tea recipe of her grandfather famous and starts tea business in the US. The film is all about her journey towards making her dreams come true against all the odds.

Performances:

Keerthy Suresh is so talented that she makes some of the most ridiculously written scenes seem reasonable. However, the writers have the upper hand as Keerthy also couldn’t save this utterly disappointing film. Jagapathi Babu has played similar characters in many films, but never looked so clownish before. Naveen Chandra plays a pointless character like many other well known actors in the film. Talented veterans like Nadhiya and Naresh also seemed out of place and clueless in many scenes. Rajendra Prasad’s character only appears sensible, but it lasts only for a few minutes. Poojitha Ponnada, Divya Sripada and Kamal Kamaraju were seen in key roles.

Technicalities:

Narendra Nath’s intentions are good. He wanted to make a movie about a strong woman who will never stop from achieving what she is dreaming of. But the director somehow makes a messy mass movie with needless elevation scenes and silly masala episodes that hardly serve the purpose of the movie.

Thaman’s music is impressive. There is little scope for songs, but he has scored a couple of very good songs and his background score helped in lifting some mediocre scenes too. Cinematography is decent. Dialogues are preachy and mostly senseless. Editing is okay. Production values are top notch as the producer didn’t compromise on the visual quality on any front.

Miss India has a familiar plot where an underdog protagonist reaches the goal against all odds. Films like these usually have male protagonists, but Miss India has a female protagonist and that didn’t stop writer-director Narendra Nath from treating it like a regular masala fare. Unfortunately for him, Keerthy Suresh ain’t Vijaya Shanthi and the movie isn’t released in single screens.

One would expect to see an inspiring tale of a woman who has become a successful entrepreneur coming from an orthodox middle class family looking at the opening sequences. But the writing lets the film down and keep our expectations in check with some pointless melodramatic sequences that happen like there’s no tomorrow. Despite such disastrous episodes we would expect it to pick up after the protagonist lands in the US.

A lot of time is wasted on a pointless romance track between Naveen and Keerthy that only delays the film from reaching the first plot point. Almost an hour of runtime is wasted by the time the story reaches this point and the first confrontation scene between Keerthy and Jagapathi Babu will kill the hopes of redemption. The remaining film is filled with bizarre sequences that will only leave us wondering how this got an approval from Keerthy and other popular actors.

Most of the scenes make us doubt whether this is a spoof on rags to riches themed commercial potboilers. If the first half of the film is an example for shallow writing, the second half is an epitome of bad writing that makes even the best in business look like clowns. There is potential in the basic idea to be an inspirational movie on a strong willed woman, but the treatment is elementary. Realistic approach than commercial treatment would have made it a better film.

In short, Miss India is a terrible misfire that would make some of the recent OTT duds proud.

Bottom Line: Tasteless Tea!

A template mass hero(ine) film that is too simplistic.

Miss India does have its share of misses and is watchable at best. But to be honest, it is only as good or bad as our run of the mill mass hero films. And without all those flab and hero glorification and political punches, this one is certainly an easier watch and Keerthy Suresh keeps it afloat! (more)

Miss India Review – Coffee Vs Tea

Miss India Movie Review

Miss India Movie Review

T360 RATING : 2/5

Miss India film focuses on women empowerment as its core theme. Ms. Manasa Samyuktha is a middle-class girl from Lambasingi, Andhra Pradesh. Taking inspiration from her grandfather (Rajendra Prasad) an ayurvedic doctor renowned for making Herbal Tea, Manasa aspires to be an entrepreneur. However, her family circumstances become obstacles to reach her dreams. Finally, with a job offer for her brother, she moves to USA along with the family. Things turn around for the better, Manasa finishes MBA in USA, and pursues her dream of selling Indian Chai in the USA. The rest of the story is about is her journey as she tries to make her brand ‘Miss India’ a success.

‘ Miss India ‘ is a nice subject on paper. The film got its casting right – the heroine and support characters are played by seasoned artists. Being shot in USA and in good sets, the production values are very adequate. With all these advantages, the director could have delivered a much better product. Unfortunately, the script and direction are a big letdown for this film.

The director has used up first 35 minutes, a very long period, to establish the struggles within heroine’s family. Manasa’s (Keerthy Suresh) dad suffers with Alzheimer’s, her grandfather dies, sister elopes & gets married to her boyfriend etc… every cinematic struggle known to the film industry is attributed to Manasa. Once the story moves to USA, things get better but now another problem starts, this time with the script. In the process of portraying Manasa as a self-confident lady, the director has chosen cinematic liberty path rather than  intelligent and inspiring one.

The protagonist’s path to success credits no creativity, its simply modeled like any other mass hero film. The over emphasis on the taste of Indian tea gets irritating real fast. Jagapathi Babu’s character seems immature, could have been so much better designed. The conflict point i.e. the showdown between Keerthy Suresh & Jagapathi Babu‘s business did not work well. All in all, the second half of the film is as dull as first.

Manasa‘s characterization as a self-made woman, a dare to dream woman entrepreneur is the only saving grace in the film. Few scenes highlighting women capabilities came well. Background score & music by Thaman is a positive, theme music is good. Other departments are mediocre.

Performances:

Keerthy Suresh as Manasa is top class. She looks gracious and handled the role of an ambitious girl with ease. Other artists, Jagapathi Babu, Rajendra Prasad, Naresh, Nadhiya etc… have done justice to their roles but there is not much substance to their characters. Naveen Chandra, Kamal Kamaraju played the roles of her boyfriend, brother respectively.

‘Miss India‘ is a film made with big ambitions that achieved only a little. Women audience may find this film as an average one, for other sections it offers nothing. Huge star cast is wasted in this insipid script in the name of Women Empowerment.

Movie Miss India
Star Cast Keerthy Suresh, Jagapathi Babu, Naveen Chandra
Director Narendra Nath
Producer Mahesh S Koneru
Music Thaman S
Run Time 2 hrs 16 mins
Release 4th Nov, 2020

Miss India is Keerthy Suresh’s second consecutive film to release on OTT platforms. Directed by newcomer Narendra Nath, the film is based on the concept of women empowerment. The film was made available for streaming on Netflix today and here is our review of it.

Manasa Samyuktha(Keerthy Suresh) a girl born in Lambasingi, Vizag dream of becoming a successful businesswoman. But owing to her family’s financial conditions, she opts to take up a job. She later resigns the job as she is not satisfied with it and sets up a tea manufacturing company in the USA and it reaches greater heights. However, rival companies try to obstruct the company’s progress. Can Manasa lead her company in these challenging times? The answer to this question forms the remaining plot of the film.

How about on-screen performances?

Keerthy Suresh bags a meaty role and she delivers a standout performance. She does pack a punch and has a strong screen presence. The talented actress has slimmed down by considerable margin for the film and her new look is a bit odd at times while watching the film. Jagapati Babu as a typical baddie is very good. Sumanth Sailendra, Nadiya, Naveen Chandra, Naresh, Kamal Kamaraju, Pujitha Poonada and the remaining star cast perform to the best of their capabilities.

How about off-screen talents?

Malayalam Cinematographer Sujith Vaassudev has delivered stunning visuals for Miss India. His exceptional work is one of the main highlights of the film. Thaman’s background is top-notch as well and it compliments Sujith’s stunning cinematography.

Coming to the captain of the ship, Narendra Nath, he picks an interesting subject which has good premise. But his simple approach in regard to the screenplay has worked against the film. There are very few bright moments in the film and it makes for a boring watch. The love track in the first half is very poor. Character establishment is strictly ordinary and there is very little emotional connect. Production values are of top quality.

What’s Hot?

Keerthy Suresh

Sujith’s visuals

Thaman’s background score

What’s not?

Poor screenplay

Weak emotions

Painfully long run-time

Lackluster direction

To put it in relatively simple terms Miss India is a big misfire. Barring the premise, no aspect of the story and screenplay is commendable. A few characters are unnecessarily introduced to stretch the run-time.

Watch or not?: Simply Skip It.!

miss india movie review in telugu

miss india movie review in telugu

  • Some viewers found the film a 'test of patience'

'Mr Bachchan', starring Ravi Teja, is receiving mixed responses on X. While some viewers found it a 'test of patience,' others praised it as a 'mass entertainer.' Additionally, actor Bhagyashri Borse, making her Telugu debut with the film, has garnered significant praise from fans.

Viewers shared their reviews on their respective X handles, with many praising the film's background score. Here are some of the reactions:

Watched #MrBachchan I could see that the director tried to make the film fun, but that came and hit the film in its face. First things first the film is only watchable for Ravanna, Satya and Bhagyasree. This film wanted to commercialise Raid but those elements test our patience. — Mayur Vavilla (@mayuuhuhu) August 15, 2024

Done with my show, the second half stands great than first half. Worthy pre-climax and climax with an interesting story line. Blazing action episodes worked well with elevations. Good technical and production values. BGM worked well. 3.5/5.0 #MrBachchan Loved it @harish2you — 𝘿𝙞ð™á𝙞ð™å𝙑ð™Æ18 (@Vk18xCr7) August 15, 2024

'Mr Bachchan' clashed at the box office with Ram Pothineni and Sanjay Dutt's 'Double iSmart' . Both films graced the screens across the globe on August 15 and will enjoy an extended opening weekend in theatres.
