In this post, we are going to cover the best way, a very simple three-step process that will help you introduce yourself in a presentation. A summary of the steps is below.

  • Start with your name and company (or organization or school).
  • Tell your audience what problem you can solve for them.
  • Share some type of proof (social proof works best) that you can solve this problem.

I will break down each step into a simple-to-follow process. But first… a little background.

First, Identify What Your Audience Wants from Your Presentation

Create an Introduction for Yourself that Makes the Audience Care About the Topic

So, before you design your introduction, think about what your audience wants from your presentation. Why do they want to spend their valuable time listening to you? Are going to waste their time? Or, are you going to provide them with something valuable?

For instance, I have expertise in a number of different areas. I’m a public speaking coach, a keynote speaker, a best-selling author, a search engine optimization specialist, and a popular podcaster. However, if I delivered that sentence to any audience, the most likely reaction would be, “So what?” That sentence doesn’t answer any of the above questions. The statement is also really “me-focused” not “audience-focused.”

So, when I start to design my self-introduction, I want to focus just on the area of expertise related to my topic. I’m then going to answer the questions above about that particular topic. Once you have these answers, set them aside for a second. They will be important later.

How to Introduce Yourself in a Presentation in Class.

If Everyone Already Knows You DON'T Introduce Yourself

Instead, you probably want to add in a fun way to start a speech . For example, instead of introducing yourself in your class speech and starting in an awkward way, start with a startling statistic. Or start with a summary of your conclusion. Or, you could start the presentation with an inspirational quote.

Each of these presentation starters will help you lower your nervousness and decrease your awkwardness.

If you are delivering a speech in a speech competition or to an audience who doesn’t know you try this technique. Just introduce yourself by saying your name , the school you represent , and your topic . Make it easy. This way you get to your content more quickly and lower your nervousness.

Typically, after you get the first few sentences out of the way, your nervousness will drop dramatically. Since your name, school, and topic should be very easy to remember, this takes the pressure off you during the most nervous moments.

Obviously, follow the guidelines that your teacher or coach gives you. (The competition may have specific ways they want you to introduce yourself.)

In a professional setting, when new people walk into a meeting and don’t know what to expect, they will feel uncomfortable. The easiest way to ease some of that tension is to chat with your audience as they come into the room.

Step #1: Start with your name and company name (or organization).

This one is easy. Just tell your audience your name and the organization that you are representing. If your organization is not a well-known brand name, you might add a short clarifying description. For instance, most people outside of the training industry have never heard of The Leader’s Institute ®. So, my step #1 might sound something like…

Hi, I’m Doug Staneart with The Leader’s Institute ®, an international leadership development company…

Still short and sweet, but a little more clear to someone who has never heard of my company.

Should you give your job title? Well… Maybe and sometimes. Add your title into the introduction only if your title adds to your credibility.

For example, if you are delivering a financial presentation and you are the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of your company, you might mention that. Your title adds to your credibility. However, if the CFO is delivering a presentation about the value of joining a trade association, the CFO title adds little credibility. So, there is very little value in adding the title.

Step #2: Tell your audience what problem you can solve for them.

Identify the Problem You Solve for Your Audience

For instance, if my topic is how to deliver presentations, I have to determine why the audience would care. What problem will they have that I can help them with? For my audiences, the problem that I most often help people with is how to eliminate public speaking fear. Once I have the problem, I add that to my introduction by using the words, “I help people…”

Hi, I’m Doug Staneart with The Leader’s Institute ®, an international leadership development company, and I help people eliminate public speaking fear.

However, if my topic is How to Close a Higher Percentage of Sales Presentations , I’d likely want to alter my introduction a little. I might say something like…

Hi, I’m Doug Staneart with The Leader’s Institute ®, an international leadership development company, and I help people design more persuasive sales presentations.

I have expertise in both areas. However, I focus my introduction on just the expertise that is applicable to this audience. If I gave the first introduction to the second audience, they will likely respond by thinking, well, I don’t really get nervous speaking, so I guess I can tune out of this speech .

So, create a problem statement starting with, “I help people…” Make the statement apply to what your audience really wants.

Step #3: Share some type of proof (social proof works best) that you can solve this problem.

By the way, if you just do steps #1 and #2, your introduction will be better than most that you will hear. However, if you add Step #3, you will gain more respect (and attention) from your audience. Without adding some type of proof that you can solve this problem, you are just giving your opinion that you are an expert. However, if you can prove it, you are also proving that you are an expert.

This is the tricky part. For some reason, most people who get to this part feel like they haven’t accomplished great things, so they diminish the great accomplishments that they do have.

For instance, an easy way to offer proof is with a personal story of how you have solved that problem in the past.

A Few Examples of How to Introduce Yourself Before a Presentation.

For instance, one of my early clients was a young accountant. When I was working with him, he came up with the following introduction, “I’m Gary Gorman with Gorman and Associates CPA’s, and I help small businesses avoid IRS audits.” It was a great, audience-focused attention-getter. (No one wants to get audited.) However, as an accountant, it wasn’t like his company was getting a lot of five-star reviews on Yelp! So, he was kind of struggling with his social proof. So, I asked him a series of questions.

Me, “How many clients do you have?”

Gary, “Over 300.”

Me, “How many small business tax returns have you processed?”

Gary, “Well, at least a couple hundred a year for 15 years.”

Me, “So, at least 3000?” He nodded. “How many of your 300 clients have been audited since you have been representing them?”

He looked at me and said, “Well, none.”

So, we just added that piece of proof to his talk of introduction.

I’m Gary Gorman with Gorman and Associates CPA’s, and I help small businesses avoid IRS audits. In fact, in my career, I’ve helped clients complete over 3000 tax returns, and not a single one has ever been audited.

Here Is How I Adjust My Introduction Based on What I Want the Audience to Do.

For my proof, I have a number of options. Just like Gary, I have had a lot of clients who have had great successes. In addition, I have published two best-selling books about public speaking. I also have hundreds of thousands of people who listen to my podcast each week. So, I can pick my evidence based on what I want my audience to do.

For instance, if I’m speaking at a convention, and I want the audience to come by my booth to purchase my books, my introduction might sound like this.

Can You Replace Your Introduction with a PowerPoint Slide?

Is it okay to make your first slide (or second slide) in your presentation slides an introduction? Sure. A good public speaker will often add an introduction slide with a biography, portrait, and maybe even contact information. I sometimes do this myself.

However, I NEVER read the slide to my audience. I often just have it showing while I deliver the short introduction using the guide above. This is a great way to share more of your work experience without sounding like you are bragging.

When you introduce yourself in a presentation, you will often just use a single sentence to tell the audience who you are. You only use this intro if the audience doesn’t know who you are. Your presentation starter, though, is quite different. Your presentation starter should be a brief introduction with relevant details about what you will cover in your presentation.

How to introduce yourself: Present – Past – Future method

OK, are you ready to learn the easiest way ever to introduce yourself in English?

It goes like this: present – past – future.

  • You start by describing your current situation
  • Then talk about your past experience
  • Finish with a statement that looks forward to the future

Let me give you some examples and phrases to use.

Start with your name – you can say “My name’s…” or “I’m…”

  • My name’s Shayna.
  • I’m Shayna.

Then you can say something about where you’re from and/or what you do:

  • I’m from the U.S., and I’m an English teacher.

To talk about what you do, you can say:

  • I’m an accountant
  • I’m a doctor
  • I’m a student at the University of California
  • I’m a stay-at-home parent
  • I’m retired
  • I work at Apple
  • I work for Time Magazine
  • I work at a restaurant
  • I work as an engineer at Apple.
  • I work as an editor for Time Magazine.

If you want, you can add something about your family, for example:

  • I’m married with two kids.
  • I’m married and we have a ten-year-old son.

Most people only do this if they are married with kids; we don’t typically announce it if we’re single, dating, divorced, or widowed (meaning your spouse has died).

If it’s a more informal situation, you could also mention your interests/hobbies. We’d typically do this when joining a social group, not so much in a job interview unless they ask you specifically about what you like to do outside of work.

To introduce a hobby/interest you can say:

  • I enjoy running/baking/reading.
  • I like to do yoga.
  • I love traveling.
  • I’m really into science fiction / martial arts / sports.

So that’s your present:

  • Where you’re from
  • What you do
  • Your family (optional, depends on context)
  • Your hobbies/interests (in informal introductions)

My example: My name’s Shayna and I’m from the U.S. I’m an English teacher and I’m married with two kids. I love working out and listening to podcasts.

Next, say a little bit about your past. You don’t want to tell your whole life history here – just some of the highlights or the most important elements.

If you’re in a professional situation like an interview or a networking event, you could talk about your degrees/qualifications and your past work experience:

  • I have a degree/certification in… [area of study]
  • I graduated from… [college or university]

To talk about your past work, you can say:

  • My background is in… [area of work/learning]
  • I worked… where I was responsible for…
  • I have lots of experience…

So if I was in a job interview for a position as an English teacher, I could say “I have a CELTA certification in teaching English to adults, and over ten years of experience leading individual and group classes as well as teaching online.”

If you’re introducing yourself in a situation that’s NOT related to work, then you could say one of these things about your past:

  • “I recently moved here for college.”
  • “I’ve been living in New York for about 7 years now.”
  • Joining a sports team: “I was on a soccer team in high school, and I usually played defense.”
  • Joining a painting class: “I’ve always loved painting, but I’ve never taken a class before.”
  • Meeting someone you don’t know at a wedding/party: “I’ve known Amy for many years – we grew up together.”

Finally, close with a statement that looks to the future, for example:

  • Job interview: I’m excited to explore how my skills would be a good fit for this role.
  • Meeting: I’m eager to get started on this project.
  • Work conference/event: I’m especially interested in the sessions about marketing.
  • Book club: I’m looking forward to our discussion.
  • Class: I hope to learn a lot this semester.

As you can see, these sentences are not necessarily in a future tense, grammatically, but they are future-looking, talking about your hopes and what you’re excited about and anticipating in the future.

The future statement also functions to provide a nice end to your introduction, making it clear that you’re finished talking, instead of saying something like “uh, yeah, well, um, I guess that’s it.”

Let’s see how we might use and modify this present-past-future introduction in different situations. I’ll start with a job interview situation:

In an interview, you don’t necessarily need to say your name, because the interviewer already knows it. But you can still follow the present-past-future model to answer when the interviewer says “Tell me a little about yourself.”

Example for a Marketing position:

  • Present: “I’m currently a Digital Marketing Specialist at XYZ Agency, where I manage social media campaigns.”
  • Past: “I have a solid background in marketing, with a Bachelor’s degree and five years’ experience. Most of my projects have involved increasing online presence for non-profits.”
  • Future: “I’m excited about the opportunity to bring my expertise to your team, and I’m especially interested in using data analysis to increase user engagement on your company’s social media channels.”

Example for a Project Manager role:

  • Present: “I’m interested in your project coordinator role because I think it’s a great fit for my experience and career interests.”
  • Past: “I have a Master’s degree in Project Management, and in my most recent role I was responsible for overseeing collaboration among multiple teams. We had an excellent track record of delivering projects on time and within budget.”
  • Future: “I’d love to bring my organizational and leadership skills to your company to help streamline processes and increase efficiency.”

Example for a Software Developer position:

  • Present: “I’m currently a freelance software engineer, and I work mainly with Python and JavaScript.”
  • Past: “I’ve had clients in many different fields over the past eight years, and I’ve been involved in the full software development lifecycle, from design to implementation and maintenance.”
  • Future: “I’m looking for a full-time position and I’m eager to contribute to the cutting-edge projects here at ABC corporation.”

An elevator pitch is a concise statement (1-2 sentences) that summarizes your unique strengths, skills, and abilities and explains how these can benefit your listener. 

It’s nice to have one ready for your presentations and networking in general since it helps you immediately connect with new people and communicate your value. 

Writing a solid elevator pitch may require several attempts and iterations. But the sooner you start — the faster you’ll arrive at the best formula!

For professionals: 

“Certified Salesforce Administrator, data visualization specialist, and analytics for top SaaS brands. I help businesses make more sense of their data to drive better outcomes”.

For a mentor :

3. Answer Popular Questions or Assumptions 

If you are a frequent presenter , chances are you get asked a lot of the same “About Me questions” after your speeches and during the networking bits. So why not address a roaster of these in your About Me slide? Select 4-5 most common questions and list them as quick FAQs on your slide deck.

Strong introductions are personable. They are meant to offer a sneak-peak into your personality and the passion behind your work. That’s why for less formal presentations, you can (and should!) start with a short personal story.

Obviously, you’ll need more than one good about me slide in this case. So here’s how to prepare a superb presentation about me. 

What to Put in a Presentation About Yourself?

The audience will expect to learn a mix of personal and professional facts about you. Thus, it’s a good idea to include the following information: 

  • Your name, contact info, website , social media handles, digital portfolio .
  • Short bio or some interesting snippets. 
  • Career timeline (if applicable).
  • Main achievements (preferably quantifiable).
  • Education, special training.
  • Digital badging awards , accolades, and other types of recognition.
  • Something more personal — an interest, hobby, aspiration. 

The above mix of items will change a bit, depending on whether you are giving an interview presentation about yourself or introduce yourself post-hiring. For example, in some cases a dedicated bio slide may be useful, but other times focusing on main achievements and goals can be better.

1. Create a List of “Facts About Me”

The easiest way to answer the “tell me about yourself” question is by having an array of facts you can easily fetch from your brain. 

When it comes to a full-length about me presentation , it’s best to have a longer list ready. To keep your brainstorming process productive, organize all your ideas in the following buckets: 

  • Key skills (soft and hard)
  • Educational accolades, training
  • Accomplishments and other “bragging rights”
  • Personal tidbits (a.k.a. fun facts ) 

Once you have a list, it gets easier to build a series of slides around it. 

2. Think Like Your Audience 

Most likely you’d be asked to make a presentation about yourself by a recruiter. There’s a good reason why many ask this — they want to determine if you are a good “cultural fit” for their organization. 

After all, 33% of people quit within the first 3 months of accepting a new job. Among these:

  • 43% of employees quit because their day-to-day role was different than what they were told it would be during the hiring process.
  • 32% cite company culture as a factor for leaving within the first three months. 

About me presentations often serve as an extra “filter” helping both parties ensure that they are on the same page expectations- and work style-wise. Thus, when you prepare your slide deck, do some background company research. Then try to align the presentation with it by matching the company tone, communication style, and cultural values. 

3. Include Testimonials and Recommendations

Use the voice of others to back up the claims you are making in your presentation. After all, trumping your own horn is what you are expected to do in such a presentation. But the voices of others can strengthen the claims you are personally making. 

Depending on your role and industry, try to sprinkle some of the following testimonials: 

  • LinkedIn recommendations
  • Quotes from personal or professional references
  • Social media comments 
  • Data metrics of your performance
  • Funny assessments from your colleagues/friends 

The above not just strengthen your narrative, but also help the audience learn some extras about you and your background. Testimonial slides can be of help for this purpose.

4. Include a Case Study 

One of the best ways to illustrate who you are is to show what you are best in. Remember, an about me presentation often needs to “soft sell” your qualifications, experience, and personality. 

One of the best ways to do that is to showcase how you can feel in a specific need and solve issues the business is facing. 

So if you have the timeframe, use some of the ending slides to deliver a quick case study. You can present: 

  • Short retrospective of a past successful project
  • Before-after transformations you’ve achieved 
  • Spotlight of the main accomplishments within the previous role 
  • Main customer results obtained
  • Specific solution delivered by you (or the team you’ve worked with) 

Ending your presentation on such a high note will leave the audience positively impressed and wondering what results you could achieve for them.

It’s easy to feel stumped when you are asked to talk about yourself. Because there are so many things you could mention (but not necessarily should). At the same time, you don’t want to make your introduction sound like a bragging context. So always think from the position of your audience. Do the facts you choose to share benefit them in any way? Introducing yourself in a presentation is more than just saying your name. It’s an opportunity for you to share relevant details about yourself and connect with your audience. It also sets the tone for the rest of the talk. How you introduce yourself will influence how your audience receives the message you want to get across. Make your next introduction flawless by presenting the most engaging information about yourself. Be sure to prepare the introduction in advance and start with an attention-grabbing technique to connect to the audience.

Including Relevant Information in Your Introduction

Step 1 State your name clearly.

  • If you have an unusual or difficult to pronounce name, you may want to add a small remark to help your audience remember it. For example, you can say “My name is Jacob Misen, like ‘risen’ but with an M.”
  • Try to make eye contact with parts of audience during your presentation as well. [1] X Research source

Step 2 Communicate your contribution to get the audience excited.

  • If you are VP of Marketing at a large company, it can actually be much more effective to say something like “I have more than a decade of experience using Facebook marketing ads to target clients in the dance industry” rather than simply stating your job title.

Step 3 Leave extra details on a handout or powerpoint slide.

  • You can also specifically refer your audience to the handout or powerpoint for more information. For example, if you want to let them know that you have articles in many international newspapers but you don’t want to list them all out, simply say “I’ve written for a number of internationally recognized news organizations. You can find the full list on the first page of my handout.”

Step 4 Save some relevant details about yourself for later in the presentation.

  • For example, you could say “when I designed a website for Richard Branson last year …” to inform your audience that you have an impressive resume, without having to list it all for them in your introduction.

Step 5 Plan a smooth transition from the introduction to your content.

  • Try concluding your introduction by mentioning a client or project you were working on that directly relates to the topic of your presentation. For example: “I’ve had the pleasure of working with NXP Semiconductors for the past three years. Just last week we encountered a problem with our logistical database...” and then lead into your presentation about a new software that will solve everyone’s logistical hiccups.

Grabbing Your Audience’s Attention Before Your Introduction

Step 1 Set the mood with music to get the audience energized.

  • If you don’t have music that can tie to your presentation, you can use a song with the theme of beginning. For example, if you are presenting at a sales meeting, play some soft jazz as participants enter. Then, when it’s time for you to start, play the Black Eyed Peas chorus of “Let’s Get it Started” to get your audience’s attention. You can then open with an energetic “Good morning!” or “Good Afternoon” as the music ends.
  • Remember to choose music that’s appropriate to the event. An academic conference may not be the best place for pop music, for example (unless you are presenting research on pop music, of course).

Step 2 Use an attention-grabbing quotation before you introduce yourself.

  • For example, if you are presenting on the design of a new user-friendly coffee machine, you may start your presentation by referencing Elon Musk: “Any product that needs a manual to work is broken,” and then go on to say “My name is Laurie Higgens, and my coffee machine doesn’t come with a manual.” Speak briefly about your relevant experience and qualifications, and then dive into presenting your design.
  • Avoid cliche or overused motivational quotes the audience has probably already heard many times.
  • Be sure to correctly cite your quote.

Step 3 Get the audience thinking by leading with a revealing statistic.

  • For example, you might start with “According to Time magazine, Americans filled 4.3 billion prescriptions and doled out $374 billion on medicine in 2014.” Then, introduce yourself and your qualifications in medical research and transition into a presentation about how to prevent doctors from over prescribing medication to their patients.
  • Remember to cite the source of your statistics. You will look more professional and reliable, and the audience will be able to follow up on the information if they wish.

Step 4 Connect to the audience and invite them to reflect with a question.

  • If you are giving a presentation about a new airport security-friendly travel bag, try starting your presentation with “How many of you have ever stood in line at airport security and nearly missed your flight?”
  • You can also invite your audience to close their eyes and imagine something as you lead up to your question.
  • Don’t be discouraged if your audience doesn’t raise their hands when you ask a question. Sometimes these questions seem more rhetorical to an audience, or maybe they are just shy. You can often see signs that they are still engaging with the question if people are nodding or smiling after you ask it.

Step 5 Employ humor to relax yourself and the audience.

  • Try telling stories, showing pictures on a powerpoint, or using quotations.
  • Being funny not only puts your audience at ease, but it also helps them remember you after the presentation. [10] X Research source

Step 6 Involve the audience if you are presenting to a small group.

  • For example, if you are making a presentation about a pizza delivery app, ask your audience members to tell their name, their favorite pizza topping, and a situation where they’ve had a particularly amazing or awful experience with food delivery.

Preparing Before Your Presentation

Step 1 Make a plan and write it down.

  • When it’s time to present, it’s probably best to just write down a few notes or key words to remind you of what you want to say so you don’t just read off your note cards.
  • Think about your overall intention as a speaker. Are you trying to educate, enlighten, or entertain the audience? Figure out the effect you want to have on the listener so your presentation is impactful.

Step 2 Rehearse your introduction with a friend.

  • If you don’t have a friend to watch your presentation, record yourself on video and play it back later to refine your presentation skills. It can be uncomfortable to watch yourself on video, but it will help you nail your introduction. You can even record your whole presentation. Keep recording and re-recording until you are happy with it. Then you know the audience will be happy too.

Step 3 Research the culture where you will present so you don’t offend anyone.

  • The best resource to learn about the local culture is the locals themselves. If you have a contact where you will be speaking, ask them about customs, dress code, and how humor is usually received. If you don’t know anyone personally, try searching in industry-specific online forums. Find YouTube videos of presentations given in the area that are relevant to your industry.

Getting ready to present in English? Here’s how to make sure your introduction for a presentation in English is successful.

But first… When you think about a presentation, I know you’re thinking about something like a TED video or a presentation at a conference. You’re thinking about a speech, with PowerPoint slides and a big audience.

But did you know we use the same skills when we share new information or ideas with our work colleagues? Or when we tell stories to our friends and family? The situation or speaking task may be different but we still use the same skills.

When presenting information or telling stories, we need to:

  • Capture a listener’s attention
  • Share information, ideas, or opinions
  • Give the important details
  • Make your information memorable
  • Get your audience (family, friends, colleagues or strangers) to agree, to take action, to change their mind, etc.

So today you’re going to learn how to take the first big step in your English presentation: how to start with a great introduction.

The introduction is the most important part of your presentation. It is the first impression you’ll make on your audience. It’s your first opportunity to get their attention. You want them to trust you and listen to you right away.

However, that first moment when you start to speak is often the hardest. Knowing how to best prepare and knowing what to say will help you feel confident and ready to say that first word and start your presentation in English.

Organize Your Introduction Correctly

Okay, first let’s focus on what you need to include in your English introduction. Think of this as your formula for a good introduction. Using this general outline for your introduction will help you prepare. It will also help your audience know who you are, why you’re an expert, and what to expect from your presentation.

Use this general outline for your next presentation:

  • Welcome your audience and introduce yourself
  • Capture their attention
  • Identify your number one goal or topic of presentation
  • Give a quick outline of your presentation
  • Provide instructions for how to ask questions (if appropriate for your situation)

Use Common Language to Make Your Introduction Easy to Understand

Great, now you have the general outline of an introduction for a speech or presentation in English. So let’s focus on some of the key expressions you can use for each step. This will help you think about what to say and how to say it so you can sound confident and prepared in your English presentation.

“The introduction is the most important part of your presentation. It is the first impression you’ll make on your audience. It’s your first opportunity to get their attention. You want them to trust you and listen to you right away.”

Welcome Your Audience & Introduction

It is polite to start with a warm welcome and to introduce yourself. Everyone in the audience will want to know who you are. Your introduction should include your name and job position or the reason you are an expert on your topic. The more the audience trusts you, the more they listen.

  • Welcome to [name of company or event]. My name is [name] and I am the [job title or background information].
  • Thank you for coming today. I’m [name] and I’m looking forward to talking with you today about [your topic].
  • Good morning/afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I’d like to quickly introduce myself. I am [name] from [company or position]. (formal)
  • On behalf of [name of company], I’d like to welcome you today. For those of you who don’t already know me, my name is [name] and I am [job title or background]. (formal)
  • Hi everyone. I’m [name and background]. I’m glad to be here with you today. Now let’s get started. (informal)

Capture Their Attention

For more information about how to best capture your audience’s attention and why, please see the next session below. However, here are a few good phrases to get you started.

  • Did you know that [insert an interesting fact or shocking statement]?
  • Have you ever heard that [insert interesting fact or shocking statement]?
  • Before I start, I’d like to share a quick story about [tell your story]…
  • I remember [tell your story, experience or memory]…
  • When I started preparing for this talk, I was reminded of [tell your story, share your quote or experience]…

Identify Your Goal or Topic of Presentation

At this stage, you want to be clear with your audience about your primary topic or goal. Do you want your audience to take action after your talk? Is it a topic everyone is curious about (or should be curious about)? This should be just one or two sentences and it should be very clear.

  • This morning I’d like to present our new [product or service].
  • Today I’d like to discuss…
  • Today I’d like to share with you…
  • What I want to share with you is…
  • My goal today is to help you understand…
  • During my talk this morning/afternoon, I’ll provide you with some background on [main topic] and why it is important to you.
  • I will present my findings on…
  • By the end of my presentation, I’d like for you to know…
  • I aim to prove to you / change your mind about…
  • I’d like to take this opportunity to talk about…
  • As you know, this morning/afternoon I’ll be discussing…

Outline Your Presentation

You may have heard this about presentations in English before:

First, tell me what you’re going to tell me. Then tell me. And finally, tell me what you told me.

It sounds crazy and weird, but it’s true. This is how we structure presentations in English. So today we’re focusing on the “First, tell me what you’re going to tell me” for your introduction. This means you should outline the key points or highlights of your topic.

This prepares your listens and helps to get their attention. It will also help them follow your presentation and stay focused. Here are some great phrases to help you do that.

  • First, I’m going to present… Then I’ll share with you… Finally, I’ll ask you to…
  • The next thing I’ll share with you is…
  • In the next section, I’ll show you…
  • Today I will be covering these 3 (or 5) key points…
  • In this presentation, we will discuss/evaluate…
  • By the end of this presentation, you’ll be able to…
  • My talk this morning is divided into [number] main sections… First, second, third… Finally…

On Asking Questions

You want to be sure to let you audience know when and how it is appropriate for them to ask you questions. For example, is the presentation informal and is it okay for someone to interrupt you with a question? Or do you prefer for everyone to wait until the end of the presentation to ask questions?

  • If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to interrupt me. I’m happy to answer any questions as we go along.
  • Feel free to ask any questions, however, I do ask that you wait until the end of the presentation to ask.
  • There will be plenty of time for questions at the end.
  • Are there any questions at this point? If not, we’ll keep going.
  • I would be happy to answer any questions you may have now.

Capture Your Audience’s Attention

Do you feel unsure about how to capture the attention of your audience? Don’t worry! Here are some common examples used in English-speaking culture for doing it perfectly!

Two of the most famous speakers in the English-speaking world are Steve Jobs and Oprah Winfrey. While Steve Jobs is no longer living, people still love to watch his speeches and presentations online. Oprah is so famous that no matter what she does, people are excited to see her and listen to her.

BUT, if you listen to a speech by Steve Jobs or Oprah Winfrey,  they still  work  to get your attention!

The don’t start with a list of numbers or data. They don’t begin with a common fact or with the title of the presentation. No – they do much more.

From the moment they start their speech, they want you to listen. And they find interesting ways to get your attention. In his most famous speeches, Steve Jobs often started with a personal story. And Oprah often starts with an inspiring quote, a motivational part of a poem, or a personal story.

These are all great ways to help your audience to listen to you immediately – whether your presentation is 3 minutes or 20 minutes.

Here’s how you can do it.

Like Steve Jobs or Oprah Winfrey, start with a:

  • Personal story or experience
  • Motivational quote or line from a poem or book
  • Joke (be careful with this – make sure it translates easily to everyone in the audience!)
  • Shocking, bold statement (Think of Steve Jobs’ quote: “ Stay hungry. Stay Foolish .”)
  • Rhetorical question ( =a question that you don’t want an answer to; the focus is to make someone think)

And finally, consider audience participation. Ask a question and get your audience to respond by raising hands.

If you’re going to make it in the professional world, most likely you’ll have to give a presentation in English at some point. No reason to get nervous!

Most of the work involved lies in the introduction. You may or may not need an English presentation PPT file, your topic, audience, or time limit may vary, but a strong opening is a must no matter what! Everything that follows can build from the opening outline you present to your audience.

Let’s look at some guidelines for starting a presentation in English. If you can master this part, you’ll never have to worry about the rest!

Opening in a Presentation in English

While it’s important to have your entire presentation organized and outlined, planning and organization are especially important in the introduction. This is what will guide you through a clear and concise beginning. Let’s look at how to start a presentation with well-organized thoughts .

Introduction Outline

  • Introduce yourself and welcome everyone.
  • State the purpose of your presentation
  • Give a short overview of the presentation

As we say, it’s as easy as 1-2-3. (No need for a more detailed English presentation script!) Let’s examine the first step.

1. Introduce Yourself & Welcome Everyone

The self-introduction is your opportunity to make a good first impression. Be sure to open with a warm welcome and use language that is familiar and natural. Based on your audience, there are a few different expressions you can use to start your presentation.

If you’re presenting to coworkers who may already know you:

  • Hello, [name] here. I would like to thank you all for your time. As you may know, I [describe what you do/your job title] I look forward to discussing [topic] today.
  • Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone. Thank you for being here. For those who don’t know me, my name is [name], and for those who know me, hello again.

If you’re presenting to people you’ve never met:

  • Hello everyone, it’s nice to meet you all. My name is [name] and I am the [job/title].
  • Hello. Welcome to [event]. My name is [name] and I am the [job/title]. I’m glad you’re all here.

There are certainly more ways to make an introduction. However, it’s generally best to follow this format:

  • Start with a polite welcome and state your name.
  • Follow with your job title and/or the reason you’re qualified to speak on the topic being discussed.

2. State the Purpose of Your Presentation

Now that your audience knows who you are and your qualifications, you can state the purpose of your presentation. This is where you clarify to your audience what you’ll be talking about.

So, ask yourself, “ What do I want my audience to get from this presentation? ”

  • Do you want your audience to be informed?
  • Do you need something from your audience?
  • Do you want them to purchase a product?
  • Do you want them to do something for the community or your company?

With your goal in mind, you can create the next couple of lines of your presentation. Below are some examples of how to start.

  • Let me share with you…
  • I’d like to introduce you to [product or service]
  • Today I want to discuss…
  • I want to breakdown for you [topic]
  • Let’s discuss…
  • Today I will present the results of my research on [topic]
  • By the end of this presentation, you’ll understand [topic]
  • My goal is to explain…
  • As you know, we’ll be talking about…

When talking about the purpose of your presentation, stick to your goals. You purpose statement should be only one to three sentences. That way, you can give your audience a clear sense of purpose that sets them up for the rest of the presentation.

3. A Short Overview of the Presentation

The final step in starting your presentation is to give a short outline of what you’ll be presenting. People like a map of what to expect from a presentation.

It helps them organize their thoughts and gives a sense of order. Also, it lets the audience know why they’re listening to you. This is what you’ll use to grab their attention, and help them stay focused throughout the presentation.

Here are some examples of how you can outline your presentation:

  • Today, I’m going to cover… Then we’ll talk about… Lastly, I’ll close on…
  • We’re going to be covering some key information you need to know, including…
  • My aim with this presentation is to get you to… To do that we’ll be talking about…
  • I’ve divided my presentation into [number] sections… [List the sections]
  • Over the next [length of your presentation] I’m going to discuss…

That’s it! It’s as simple as 1-2-3. If you have a fear of public speaking or are not confident about presenting to a group of people, follow these three steps. It’s a simple structure that can get you off to a good start. With that in mind, there are other ways to bring your introduction to the next level too! Read on for bonus tips on how to really engage your audience, beyond the basics.

For a Strong Presentation in English, Engage your Audience

Presentations aren’t everyone’s strongest ability, and that’s OK. If you’re newer to presenting in English, the steps above are the basics to getting started. Once you’re more comfortable with presenting, though, you can go a step further with some extra tricks that can really wow your audience.

Mastering the skill of engaging an audience will take experience. Fortunately, there are many famous speakers out there you can model for capturing attention. Also, there are some common techniques that English-speakers use to gain an audience’s attention.

*How and when you use these techniques in your introduction is at your discretion, as long as you cover the 3 steps of the introduction outline that we discussed earlier.*

Do or say something shocking.

The purpose of shocking your audience is to immediately engage them. You can make a loud noise and somehow relate the noise to your presentation. Or, you can say, “ Did you know that… ” and follow with a shocking story or statistic. Either way, the objective is to create surprise to draw their attention.

Tell a story

Telling a story related to your presentation is a great way to get the audience listening to you.

You can start by saying, “ On my way to [location] the other day… ” or “ On my way here, I was reminded of… ” and then follow with a story. A good story can make your presentation memorable.

Ask your audience to take part

Sometimes a good introduction that captures attention will involve asking for help from the audience. You can ask the audience to play a quick game or solve a puzzle that’s related to your presentation. Also, you could engage the audience with a group exercise. This is a great way to get people involved in your presentation.

There are many more ways to engage the audience, so get creative and see what you can think up! Here are some resources that will help you get started.

The organization is dedicated to helping you be a better speaker, and there are many local groups in America. Knowing how to do great self-introductions in English is really useful when you move to a new place, like I just did! It’s also good to know how to introduce yourself for job interviews, for networking, and for social events when you are making new friends.

You never know when you might need to introduce yourself, so during this lesson, I’m going to ask you to do a little homework assignment, so you can be prepared!

3 Things You Need for Great Self-Introductions in English

1. greeting.

First of all, of course we need a greeting! “Hello” “Hi, how’s it going?” “What’s up?” (a little more casual)

If you want to be a little more formal, try: “Hello” “Good morning” “Good afternoon” “Good evening”

In North American English, we don’t say, “Good day.” We also don’t ever use “good night” to greet someone. Instead, use “good night” to say goodbye, or when you’re going to sleep.

2. Say Your Name

Next, say your name when you’re introducing yourself. Your name is super-important, and I want to really encourage you to say your name clearly and slowly. Your name may not be familiar to North American English speakers.

A huge mistake that I hear international students or professionals making is saying their name so quickly that no one can catch it. They’re embarrassed to ask you to repeat yourself, so be sure to say your name very clearly.

If you say, “I am…,” it sounds very formal. Most English speakers will say, “I’m.” You can also say, “My name is…”, but this is also a little more formal. You could say this if you’re presenting to a group of people, or maybe you are in the audience and you want to ask a question.

“Hi, my name is Gabby, and I would like to ask a question about…”

If you’re on the telephone, you can say, “This is Gabby,” but only for the telephone.

3. Where You’re From

People love to know where you’re from. It’s one of the first questions they’ll ask you. You could say:

“I’m from Minneapolis.” “I’m originally from Minneapolis, and now I’m living in Austin, Texas in the United States.”

If you’re talking to an international group of people, you might say your nationality.

“I’m American.”

Now, one I don’t really recommend is “I come from…” It’s okay, it’s not incorrect, but it sounds very unnatural. Instead, a phrase I like better is:

“I was born and raised in Minnesota, now I live in Texas.” “I’ve been living in Austin, Texas for about six months.”

Okay, there you have it! The three components of a basic introduction.

A More Advanced Introduction

Next, we’re going to add three more parts for a more advanced self-introduction in English. First, let’s review.

1. Your basic greeting – “Hi.” 2. A name – “I’m Gabby.” 3. Where you’re from – “I’m from Minnesota.”

Actually, this sounds strange if we say these sentences separately. Let’s put them together so they flow more naturally:

“Hi, I’m Gabby from Minnesota.”

How you introduce yourself in English depends on your situation. Are you doing a self-introduction in English for professional reasons? If you’re introducing yourself for a more fun situation, you might want to add something about work, or your hobbies, or maybe a “fun fact.” Often, when teachers ask their students to introduce themselves, or when managers are asking new employees to introduce themselves, they will ask for a fun fact. We’ll talk about this more a little later. Sometimes it’s a little nerve-wracking, or it makes you very nervous, but I’m going to tell you exactly what to say in this situation.

Talking About Your Work Experience

For a great self-introduction in English, you could say, “I work at Apple.” ‘I work at Starbucks.”

Or, you could include your position:

“I’m a manager at Apple.” “I’m a manager at Starbucks.”

Job positions are countable nouns, so remember to use the article “a” (pronounce it like “uh”).  If your profession or position starts with a vowel, remember to use the article “an.”

“I’m an engineer.”

If you forget the article and say, “I’m engineer,” that doesn’t sound good. We need that little article. If there’s only one of your position, you could say “the” instead of “a” if you really want to distinguish that you are the only manager at your place of work.

“I’m the manager at Starbucks.”

If you don’t want to be that specific, saying what you do and where you work, you could say:

“I work in marketing.” “I work in education.”

That’s a little easier and totally fine! When you say it, you don’t need to stress the preposition “in.” It’s a very small word, but it’s there.

If you don’t have work experience, you can simply say what you’re studying.

“I’m studying marketing.” “I’m about to get my degree in education.” You could also say, “I’m graduating soon in education.” “I’m graduating soon from a marketing program.” “Right now, I’m studying courses online.”

If you want to talk about your experience a bit, you could say:

“I have 20 years of experience teaching English.” “I’ve been teaching English for 20 years.” “I’ve been teaching English since…”

Talk About Your Family

Now, let’s talk about your family. You might talk more about your family in a social situation, but we can certainly talk about them in professional situations as well. This really depends on you, and your stage in life.

If you want to talk about the family you grew up in, you could say:

“I’m from a family of five.” “I’m one of three siblings.” If you don’t have brothers or sisters, you could say, “I’m an only child.”

If you want to talk about your immediate family, meaning yourself, your partner, and any children you have, you could say:

“We are a family of five.”

Instead of saying “I am married,” (which you can definitely say, there isn’t anything wrong with that), you could just mantion your partner during the conversation.

“My husband and I moved to Austin recently.” “My partner and I came to this city in search of a better quality of life.”

One Thing Not to Include in Your Introduction

Now, one thing I really want to mention is that in North America, we do not include our age when we introduce ourselves. We also don’t ask anyone else how old they are.

What Do You Do For Fun?

Let’s talk about hobbies now, and I’m going to lump it in with fun facts! Sometimes, people will ask you what you do for fun. This could include your hobby, or anything else you do for fun. We don’t usually ask, “What is your hobby?” That’s textbook English. More naturally, we say:

“What do you do for fun?” “What do you do in your spare time?” or, “What do you do when you’re not working?”

“I enjoy traveling,” “I enjoy mountain biking.”

Don’t say, for example, “I enjoy to mountain bike.” With “enjoy,” you can only say “I enjoy + verb with an -ing.”

You could also use “I like…” Like is a really safe way to talk about your hobbies. With “like,” you CAN use “to.” You can say:

“I like to mountain bike.” “I like to travel.”

You can also say:

“I like traveling.” “I like mountain biking.”

There are other ways to say this, too. You can say, “I’m into” something.

“I’m really into mountain biking.” “I’m interested in hiking.” “I’m a fan of exploring cafes in Austin.”

Just don’t say, “My hobby is…” because this just sounds like textbook English. Try one of these other suggestions that I’ve given you.

Finally, for a fun fact you could say:

“Something you may not know about me is…” “A fun fact about me is…”

Then include something like a unique experience you’ve had, or a weird like or dislike.

Self-Introductions in English – Put It All Together

Let’s put together an advanced self-introduction in English.

“Hi, I’m Gabby. I’m from Minnesota, but I’ve been living in Austin for six months. I work as an English teacher. My family is just me and my dog. I’m into mountain biking and hiking. Something you may not know about me is that I teach English every week to over 2 million English learners from around the world!

You might be thinking that you introduce yourself to people all the time, so surely you don’t need a guide about it. However, there are ways that you can give a self-introduction to send across the right sort of message.

Shuffling into a room and murmuring your name just loud enough to be audible is going to say something quite different than if you strode in with your hand outstretched and your shoulders back. Yes, body language plays a big part in introducing yourself too of course, but language itself is important in conveying the right sort of message to your audience too. First, we’ll take a look at what self-introduction is all about, before giving some tips that’ll help you introduce yourself more effectively.

What is Self-Introduction?

What do you say when you meet someone new? Introduce yourself of course!

Self-introduction is simply the act of introducing yourself to someone else. You might just be introducing yourself to a new person you have never met before, or you might be introducing yourself to hundreds of people in a conference room. Thankfully, both situations actually require the same sort of language and body language to introduce yourself in a way that is both confident, and clear. The two things you should definitely aim to be when introducing yourself to others.

Introducing yourself is much more than saying your name . You need to tell some more information about yourself in English. Introducing yourself to strangers can be tricky because what you say depends on the context, situation (in a job interview, in an email, or give self-introduction in an English class).

In this lesson, you will learn how to confidently introduce yourself in English.

How to Introduce Yourself

General tips.

The tips listed here will apply to almost every situation where you need to introduce yourself. We’ll get more specific later, but for now, let’s focus on the things you can do every time you need to introduce yourself to somebody new:

  • State who you are clearly . Try not to mumble or else the person you’re introducing yourself to might have to ask again… and again… and again… until they simply smile and nod without ever knowing what your name is.
  • Be friendly . Even in formal situations, you can be friendly. Saying something like “ Hi there , I’m…” with a smile says a lot about you. You seem confident and easy to talk to. If you were in a very formal setting you might say “Hello, I am…” the point is you should introduce yourself in a way that is approachable. Very formal settings might require you to use ‘proper’ English (no contraction’s etc.) but in most other areas shortening words is fine.
  • Know your audience . It doesn’t matter if you’re speaking to one person or a thousand, knowing your audience is key. Obviously, if you’re introducing yourself you don’t know  the person, but from context you should have an idea about how they are going to be. Meeting the in-laws for the first time probably isn’t the best time to tell a joke as you introduce yourself, but meeting a friend of a friend at the bar might be.
  • If you are sitting when you first meet somebody you are going to introduce yourself to, then it’s always best to stand if you are able. It’s often seen as the polite thing to do, so it’s a way that you can use body language to impress the person you are introducing yourself to.

Tips For The Student In Class

Introducing yourself to a class full of people is universally acknowledged as being people’s worst nightmare. That being said, you can make things a lot easier for yourself by following these simple tips:

  • Be prepared . Know that as you head into a new class, you  are  going to have to say something about yourself, however much you don’t want to. So, beforehand have a think about what you might say. Is there a reason you’ve taken the class? Is there a hobby you’ve always done that relates to the class?
  • Smile . Everybody in the room is dreading introducing themselves too, so smile and create a relaxed atmosphere in yourself, and others will follow suit and smile too.
  • Look around the room . Trust us, we know. We want to put our eyes to the floor when introducing ourselves to a class too, but take a deep breath and force your eyes up and look around the room at the faces watching you. By doing this, you’re already making yourself seem more confident. Speak clearly as you state your name, your reason for being there, and your hobbies, and people will already feel like they know you a little better.

How to Introduce Yourself in an Interview

Most of what we have discussed is relevant to introducing yourself in a job interview too, but here are a few extra tips:

  • A firm handshake as you enter the room already makes the interviewer think that you are somebody who should be taken seriously. Follow this up with a friendly smile and stating your name and you’ll already be off to a great start.
  • Listen ! This is so important in interviews. The art of conversation lies predominantly in the gaps between your speeches. Listen with intent so you can answer questions directly. Also, listen so you can adapt. If you think you’re going to be the first person to talk as you enter the interview room, but they start speaking first, then let them. Nobody will think bad of you for not speaking first, you’d certainly look a lot worse if you spoke over them the whole time.

Self-Introduction Examples

Introducing yourself in class.

“Hi, I’m Jane. I’m taking this class because Art History has always been something I’ve been fascinated by, ever since I started taking trips to art galleries as a little girl, and I’m basically just excited to learn a little more.

Simply saying something like this with a smile, will be all the introduction you need.

Self-Introduction in Interview

Something similar to this would work well in answer to that dreaded “Tell me about yourself” question that interviewers love so much.

“Hi, I’m Jane Smith. I’ve always been passionate about Art, and I actually majored in Art History at college last year. Ever since, I’ve been pursuing my dream of becoming an Art handler so I can really work in an area I know a great deal about. So when I saw your job advertisement I couldn’t stop myself from applying.”

Here you’ve introduced yourself clearly, told them exactly what your interests are, and sold yourself as the ideal person for the job.

“Hi, I’m Jane Smith. I help restore and preserve art. Just last week I actually worked on ‘The White Bridge’ by John Smith and I’ve led various projects throughout the years too. What I’m looking for now is to move into an area of Art where I have opportunities to create art of my own, as well as preserve other people’s. Do you have any thoughts about how I might achieve that?”

In networking it’s important to state what you do, what you’ve done, and what you want to do. Networking is all about introducing who you are in a way that can show you off as a resource to others, but somebody who is open to new connections to help achieve what you want too.

These are very specific examples, but if you include the tips we have pointed out above too, you’ll see that introducing yourself really doesn’t have to be hard. Be confident, speak clearly, and know what you might say, and you’ve already won half the battle.

One of the very first English lessons you learn is how to introduce yourself.

But how do these lessons  stack up (compare) against what happens in the real world?

Below, I’m going to go over all the English phrases you need to meet someone new. We’ll talk about how to introduce yourself in English in both informal and formal situations—even if you’re a complete beginner .

1. Say “Hello,” followed by your name

2. say “nice to meet you, [the other person’s name]”, 3. use common greetings depending on the time of day, 4. provide basic information about yourself, 5. talk about the things that make you unique, 6. ask basic questions about the other person, 7. compliment the other person, 8. give positive, concise answers to someone’s questions, 9. ask lots of follow-up questions, 10. prepare to end the conversation, 11. don’t forget to use your body language, 12. practice, practice, practice, and one more thing....

The easiest way to  break the ice (start a conversation) is to just say “Hello, I’m [your name].”

Amy: Hello! I’m Amy.  

The other person will say:

Brian: Hi there! I’m Brian.

If the other person  initiates (starts) the conversation, use this phrase to answer them.

Amy: Nice to meet you, Brian!  

You can also break the ice with time-dependent greetings like:

  • Good morning. If your clock says “a.m.,” use this greeting. 
  • Good afternoon. Use this greeting from 12:00 p.m. to when the sun goes down. This is usually around 5 to 6 p.m.
  • Good evening. If it’s already dark outside and it’s not yet 12:00 a.m., use this greeting.

Here are other English greetings you can use based on how formal the situation is .

To introduce yourself in English, give a little bit of information about yourself.

For example, in an informal context, saying where you’re from is a good conversation starter.

I’m from New York.

In a formal context, like a job interview or meeting new co-workers, you want to have an elevator pitch . The reason it’s called an “elevator pitch” is because it answers this question: if you only have one elevator ride (or 30 seconds) to introduce yourself to a business associate, what would you say?

Let’s have a look at sample elevator pitches from our two friends, Amy and Brian:

Amy: I work for an IT company in Lower Manhattan.

Brian: I’ve been working as a freelance translator since 2002.

They can also say something like:

Amy: I’ve been working as an editor for Select Magazine for 15 years.

Brian: During the last 10 years, I’ve been in charge of managing translation projects related to marketing.

See? These statements may be short and to the point, but they’re impactful because they go into the important details  right off the bat (immediately). If you have any impressive qualifications (like Amy’s 15 years of experience with Select Magazine), introduce yourself with those.

Once you’ve gotten the basics out of the way, you can go into a little more detail. You want to answer the question, “What makes you different?”

In an informal context, you can talk about your interests:

When I’m not working, I like to go hiking.

In a formal context, you can summarize your skills, experiences and other things that make you stand out from other professionals:

Amy: I met Bill Gates in 2015 when I was working as an assistant. He shared some thoughts on building your own brand. I learned a lot from him.

Brian: I used to live in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where I got to work with the Institute for Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law. I think this experience has improved my legal research skills tremendously.  

No matter the context, it’s important not to lie or  exaggerate (make something look better than it really is). Give the basic facts, plus a little bit of your opinion as well. 

Although talking about yourself is important, you should let the other person talk as well. Not only is this the polite thing to do, but it also gives you a reason to keep the conversation going.

The safest question to ask someone you’re meeting for the first time—whether in a formal or informal context—is:

How are you?

People will usually respond to “How are you?” with “I’m fine, thank you,” though you should expect other answers about how they’re feeling or doing.

Here are some other questions you can ask:

Where are you from?

What are you doing here? or What brings you here?

Are you having a good time?

What do you do?

How was your trip?

Another great way to keep a conversation going is to  compliment the other person. This means finding something you like about them and talking about it.

Just be a little careful when choosing what to compliment about the other person. Avoid discussing permanent characteristics like someone’s physical appearance, accent, etc. because it can really come off wrong. They might be offended or think it’s too  forward (overly friendly).

Instead, try these compliments:

I love your dress.

You have a beautiful dog.

Is that your car? I really like it.

Remember the questions we talked about in Tip #6? Make sure you know how to answer those questions as well.

Even when questions are specific (asking for detailed information), you can prepare a general response—i.e., an answer you can use in almost any situation.

Your answer can follow this template:

  • Say something positive
  • Add in more detail to keep the conversation interesting (optional)
  • Ask a question back to the other person

Brian: What do you think of the restaurant?  

Amy: I’d go back here again just for the tacos! How was the food for you?  

Brian: How do you find the conference?  

Amy: The speakers have been really interesting! Which talks did you like?

Brian: How was your trip?

Amy: It went well. I really enjoyed the two weeks there, but I’m also glad to be back! How did your trip go?  

If you aren’t confident in your English skills, it’s much easier to listen to the other person.

Pay attention to the answers from your first questions, and ask for more details. People love to talk about themselves, so this won’t be a problem.

Here’s a sample conversation with lots of follow-up questions.

Amy: How are you?

Brian: A little tired. I didn’t sleep much last night.

Amy: Ah, why is that?

Brian: I just came home from my flight, and I’m still jet-lagged.

Amy: Travel can be really exhausting! Where did you fly from?

Brian: I came from London last night.

Amy: Ah yeah, that’s a major time difference. How long did the flight take?

Brian: Just a few hours. But I had a long layover in Frankfurt.

Of course, you aren’t going to be talking to the other person forever. At some point, you have to end the conversation.

If you have nothing more to say, or you’re not connecting with the person you’re talking with, you need a way to leave politely. Otherwise, there could be a lot of awkward silences.

Here are a few key lines for leaving politely:

Excuse me, I need to go right now.

Well, it’s been lovely talking to you.

Best of luck.

Let me give you my business card before I go.

Enjoy your time here!

As you say these phrases, hold out your hand for a handshake, making it clear that you’re ending the conversation.

English conversations don’t only involve a lot of talking. They also involve the use of nonverbal expressions to communicate what you mean.

Here are examples of body language used in English :

  • Handshake.  When meeting someone for the first time, and after saying “Hello” followed by your name, hold out your hand. Wait for the other person to hold out their hand, then take it. Make sure your grip is firm (strong), but not too tight.
  • Smile. Do this when you meet someone for the first time, when you agree with something they say and when you’re ending a conversation.
  • Nod your head. English speakers typically nod their head (i.e., they move their head down and up quickly) when they want to show that they acknowledge or agree with what the other person is saying.

Before you meet someone new or go to a professional event, it may help to practice possible conversations as much as you need until you’re comfortable and happy with your answers.

It’s hard to know beforehand what a conversation will look like. But you can be prepared for the most common situations! The more comfortable you are answering the basics, the more confident you’ll be when the conversation goes somewhere you didn’t expect.

Here you have a final example of a conversation between Brian and Amy. They’re at a marketing convention, and they just got to know each other thanks to a  mutual (common) friend:

Brian: Good morning! Nice to meet you, Ms. Poltino. My name is Brian Gordon. Mr. Standford mentioned a lot of great things about you.

Amy: Nice to meet you, Mr. Gordon. Please, call me Amy. So, what’s Mr. Standford saying about me?

Mr. Standford: I was just telling Brian about your amazing career and your recent move to San Francisco.

Brian: I love San Francisco! How are you liking it, Amy?

Amy: I like it a lot here! There’s always something new going on. Where are you from, Mr. Gordon?

Brian: Oh, you can just call me Brian. I was born in London, but I only lived in the UK for six months, so I really consider myself to be American.

Amy: Sounds exciting! I’ve never been to the UK. I’ve always wanted to visit, but I got promoted to manager at my job, and I’ve been very busy since. Where do you work?

Brian: I’ve been a freelance translator for 20 years. I have a passion for languages. What about you, Amy? Mr. Standford told me you work for a tech company downtown?

Mr. Standford: Glassdoor, can you imagine?

Amy: That’s right. I’ve been working at Glassdoor since 2020. I recently got an offer to come to San Francisco, and I didn’t want to waste such a huge opportunity.

Brian: Sounds amazing.

Mr. Standford: Brian, did you know that Amy knows Bill Gates?

Brian: Really? Impressive!

Amy: Thanks! I met Bill Gates in 2015 when I was working as an assistant. He shared some thoughts on building your own brand. That was a turning point in my career.

Brian: Sounds amazing…

When introducing yourself, consider using the NAME-ROLE-ACHIEVEMENTS template. Start with your name, then mention the role you’re in, and highlight key achievements or experiences you’d like to share.

What does self presentation mean?

What are self presentation goals, individual differences and self presentation.

How can you make the most of the self presentation theory at work?  

We all want others to see us as confident, competent, and likeable — even if we don’t necessarily feel that way all the time. In fact, we make dozens of decisions every day — whether consciously or unconsciously — to get people to see us as we want to be seen. But is this kind of self presentation dishonest? Shouldn’t we just be ourselves?

Success requires interacting with other people. We can’t control the other side of those interactions. But we can think about how the other person might see us and make choices about what we want to convey. 

Self presentation is any behavior or action made with the intention to influence or change how other people see you. Anytime we're trying to get people to think of us a certain way, it's an act of self presentation. Generally speaking, we work to present ourselves as favorably as possible. What that means can vary depending on the situation and the other person.

Although at first glance this may seem disingenuous, we all engage in self-presentation. We want to make sure that we show up in a way that not only makes us look good, but makes us feel good about ourselves.

Early research on self presentation focused on narcissism and sociopathy, and how people might use the impression others have of them to manipulate others for their benefit. However, self presentation and manipulation are distinct. After all, managing the way others see us works for their benefit as well as ours.

Imagine, for example, a friend was complaining to you about   a tough time they were having at work . You may want to show up as a compassionate person. However, it also benefits your friend — they feel heard and able to express what is bothering them when you appear to be present, attentive, and considerate of their feelings. In this case, you’d be conscious of projecting a caring image, even if your mind was elsewhere, because you value the relationship and your friend’s experience.

To some extent, every aspect of our lives depends on successful self-presentation. We want our families to feel that we are worthy of attention and love. We present ourselves as studious and responsible to our teachers. We want to seem fun and interesting at a party, and confident at networking events. Even landing a job depends on you convincing the interviewer that you are the best person for the role.

There are three main reasons why people engage in self presentation:

Tangible or social benefits:

In order to achieve the results we want, it often requires that we behave a certain way. In other words, certain behaviors are desirable in certain situations. Matching our behavior to the circumstances can help us connect to others,   develop a sense of belonging , and attune to the needs and feelings of others.

Example:   Michelle is   a new manager . At her first leadership meeting, someone makes a joke that she doesn’t quite get. When everyone else laughs, she smiles, even though she’s not sure why.

By laughing along with the joke, Michelle is trying to fit in and appear “in the know.” Perhaps more importantly, she avoids feeling (or at least appearing) left out, humorless, or revealing that she didn’t get it — which may hurt her confidence and how she interacts with the group in the future.

To facilitate social interaction:

As mentioned, certain circumstances and roles call for certain behaviors. Imagine a defense attorney. Do you think of them a certain way? Do you have expectations for what they do — or don’t — do? If you saw them frantically searching for their car keys, would you feel confident with them defending your case?

If the answer is no, then you have a good idea of why self presentation is critical to social functioning. We’re surprised when people don’t present themselves in a way that we feel is consistent with the demands of their role. Having an understanding of what is expected of you — whether at home, work, or in relationships — may help you succeed by inspiring confidence in others.

Example:   Christopher has always been called a “know-it-all.” He reads frequently and across a variety of topics, but gets nervous and tends to talk over people. When attending a networking event, he is uncharacteristically quiet. Even though he would love to speak up, he’s afraid of being seen as someone who “dominates” the conversation. 

Identity Construction:

It’s not enough for us to declare who we are or what we want to be — we have to take actions consistent with that identity. In many cases, we also have to get others to buy into this image of ourselves as well. Whether it’s a personality trait or a promotion, it can be said that we’re not who   we   think we are, but who others see.

Example:   Jordan is interested in moving to a client-facing role. However, in their last performance review, their manager commented that Jordan seemed “more comfortable working independently.” 

Declaring themselves a “people person” won’t make Jordan’s manager see them any differently. In order to gain their manager’s confidence, Jordan will have to show up as someone who can comfortably engage with clients and thrive in their new role.

We may also use self presentation to reinforce a desired identity for ourselves. If we want to accomplish something, make a change, or   learn a new skill , making it public is a powerful strategy. There's a reason why people who share their goals are more likely to be successful. The positive pressure can help us stay accountable to our commitments in a way that would be hard to accomplish alone.

Example:   Fatima wants to run a 5K. She’s signed up for a couple before, but her perfectionist tendencies lead her to skip race day because she feels she hasn’t trained enough. However, when her friend asks her to run a 5K with her, she shows up without a second thought.

In Fatima’s case, the positive pressure — along with the desire to serve a more important value (friendship) — makes showing up easy.

Because we spend so much time with other people (and our success largely depends on what they think of us), we all curate our appearance in one way or another. However, we don’t all desire to have people see us in the same way or to achieve the same goals. Our experiences and outcomes may vary based on a variety of factors.

One important factor is our level of self-monitoring when we interact with others. Some people are particularly concerned about creating a good impression, while others are uninterested. This can vary not only in individuals, but by circumstances.   A person may feel very confident at work , but nervous about making a good impression on a first date.

Another factor is self-consciousness — that is, how aware people are of themselves in a given circumstance. People that score high on scales of public self-consciousness are aware of how they come across socially. This tends to make it easier for them to align their behavior with the perception that they want others to have of them.

Finally, it's not enough to simply want other people to see you differently. In order to successfully change how other people perceive you, need to have three main skills: 

1. Perception and empathy

Successful self-presentation depends on being able to correctly perceive   how people are feeling , what's important to them, and which traits you need to project in order to achieve your intended outcomes.

2. Motivation

If we don’t have a compelling reason to change the perception that others have of us, we are not likely to try to change our behavior. Your desire for a particular outcome, whether it's social or material, creates a sense of urgency.

3.  A matching skill set

You’ve got to be able to walk the talk. Your actions will convince others more than anything you say. In other words, you have to provide evidence that you are the person you say you are. You may run into challenges if you're trying to portray yourself as skilled in an area where you actually lack experience.

How can you make the most of the self presentation theory at work?

At its heart, self presentation requires a high-level of self awareness and empathy. In order to make sure that we're showing up as our best in every circumstance — and with each person — we have to be aware of our own motivation as well as what would make the biggest difference to the person in front of us.

Here are 6 strategies to learn to make the most of the self-presentation theory in your career:

1. Get feedback from people around you

Ask a trusted friend or mentor to share what you can improve. Asking for feedback about specific experiences, like a recent project or presentation, will make their suggestions more relevant and easier to implement.

2. Study people who have been successful in your role

Look at how they interact with other people. How do you perceive them? Have they had to cultivate particular skills or ways of interacting with others that may not have come easily to them?

3. Be yourself

Look for areas where you naturally excel and stand out. If you feel comfortable, confident, and happy, you’ll have an easier time projecting that to others. It’s much harder to present yourself as confident when you’re uncomfortable.

4. Be aware that you may mess up

As you work to master new skills and ways of interacting with others,   keep asking for feedback . Talk to your manager, team, or a trusted friend about how you came across. If you sense that you’ve missed the mark, address it candidly. People will understand, and you’ll learn more quickly.

Try saying, “I hope that didn’t come across as _______. I want you to know that…”

5. Work with a coach

Coaches are skilled in interpersonal communication and committed to your success. Roleplay conversations to see how they land, and practice what you’ll say and do in upcoming encounters. Over time, a coach will also begin to know you well enough to notice patterns and suggest areas for improvement.

6. The identity is in the details

Don’t forget about the other aspects of your presentation. Take a moment to visualize yourself being the way that you want to be seen. Are there certain details that would make you feel more like that person? Getting organized, refreshing your wardrobe, rewriting your resume, and even cleaning your home office can all serve as powerful affirmations of your next-level self.

Self presentation is defined as the way we try to control how others see us, but it’s just as much about how we see ourselves. It is a skill to achieve a level of comfort with who we are   and   feel confident to choose how we self-present. Consciously working to make sure others get to see the very best of you is a wonderful way to develop into the person you want to be.

Self-Introductions in English: “My Name is…” & Beyond!

So, you’re getting ready for a visit (or stay) in an English-speaking country and are eager to make friends. But in the back of your mind you’re thinking: “I have no idea how to introduce myself in English!”

Self-introductions are the cornerstone of beginning a new relationship. It’s during a self-introduction that you let the other person know all the basics: your name, your age, your occupation, what you enjoy doing in your spare time, and so on. Self-introductions can be difficult and nerve-racking enough in your own language (they are for me, anyway!), so doing them in another language might leave you feeling shy or diffident.

While I can’t help you feel less shy, I can help you feel more prepared for your first few introductions in English. In this article, I’ll be going over how to identify yourself, how to place yourself in society, and how to share personal details with those you want to form a deeper bond with, all in American English.

1. Body Language

There is one thing I want to go over before verbal introductions: body language. Body language is something you can use to your benefit, regardless of your English-language skills.

It’s important to know what your posture, gestures, and facial expressions are telling others about you, and how to use your body language to your advantage. Below is a quick list of things you should do when introducing yourself

  • Smile when introducing yourself. Smiling indicates a positive mood and is likely to make you a more appealing conversation partner.
  • Stand (or sit) up straight. This indicates that you’re confident, comfortable, and ready to engage in a conversation. You can also use this to your benefit by appearing more confident than you really are—and sometimes appearing more confident can help you feel more confident, too!
  • Shake hands. A brief, friendly handshake is one of the most common ways to greet someone in the United States upon first meeting, and can be done with almost anyone you meet, regardless of gender or social status. This is a good way to begin an introduction, particularly in business environments.
  • Maintain eye contact (but not too much). In the United States, most people prefer to speak with someone who’s not “afraid” to look them in the eyes. It’s considered a sign of honesty, trustworthiness, and friendliness to maintain eye contact during a conversation. Maintaining eye contact indicates that you’re listening and interested in the discussion. But be careful not to come off as “creepy” by staring into their eyes for very long periods of time; allow yourself to casually look away from time to time, and be sure to blink. 😉

2. Identifying Yourself

How do you introduce yourself in English? Or better yet, how do you introduce yourself briefly in English? The best way to initiate a conversation is with a cheery “Hi” or “Hey,” and a smile! If you need to do some brushing up on greetings, you can learn more about English greetings in our dedicated article .

1- Stating Your Name

Once you’ve gotten the conversation started with an initial greeting, you can offer your name. There’s a variety of ways you can do this; below I’ve outlined the most common sentence structures with examples.

  • My name is Jamie .
  • I’m Ira .
  • My name is Lillian , or Lily for short.
  • You can call me Bob .

If you want to ask someone else’s name, you can use one of the following sentences:

  • My name is Valerie . What’s yours?
  • This a more formal way of asking someone’s name and is usually the best option, especially in business environments.
  • This is less formal, but it’s acceptable in most social situations that don’t require a high level of professionalism.

During this stage, also be sure to say “Nice to meet you,” as this is seen as respectful and friendly. If the other person has already said this, you can say “ It’s nice to meet you too ,” or “ Thank you. Likewise. ”

In the United States, it’s not very common to ask about someone’s age unless there’s a good reason to. That said, it’s not a taboo either. My recommendation for most social situations is to keep from asking about age unless the person seems to be about the same age as you.

Here are a couple of ways you can ask about someone’s age:

  • I’m thirty years old. How about you?
  • May I ask how old you are?
  • May I ask your age?
  • Note that this is the most informal way of asking someone’s age, but it does sound more natural in speech than the others. This phrase is best used in laid-back, informal environments with people about your own age.

Now, here are the most common ways to answer the question:

  • I’m thirty years old.
  • I’m twenty-five .
  • I turned twenty last June .
  • I’m turning forty-three this November .

3- Nationality

In the United States, you may be asked about your nationality , or where you’re from. Here are a few simple ways to answer the question:

  • I’m from China .
  • I’m Norwegian .
  • I came here from Russia .
  • I’m visiting from Japan .

3. Placing Yourself in Society

After you and the person you’re speaking with have established the basics, it’s only natural for the conversation to steer toward what you do . Three major factors of society (and your place in it) are: education , work, and family. Here, I’ll be going over each of these factors.

1- Education: Stating Your School & Major

If you’re in school, you’ll likely be asked a lot about what school you’re going to and what you’re majoring in. Here are a few basic answers to these questions:

  • I’m a student at Harvard .
  • I’m studying at Arizona State University .
  • I’m studying Psychology .
  • My major is Food and Nutrition .
  • I haven’t chosen a major yet.

If you recently graduated or are no longer going to school, you can answer like this. Note the use of past-tense verbs in these answers.

  • I used to be a student at Harvard .
  • I went to school at Arizona State University .
  • I studied Psychology .
  • I majored in Food and Nutrition .

Here are a few ways you can respond to someone after they ask about your profession:

Family may be the most unique topic in this article, and one that’s both personal and societal. You may or may not be asked about your family during your first conversation with someone. But if you are, and you feel like opening up a little bit, below are a few sentences you can use to talk about your family .

  • I have two uncles and one aunt .
  • My grandma is a bookkeeper .
  • My mom and I aren’t very close.

If you’re not comfortable talking about your family, that’s completely fine and the other person will likely understand. You can let them know this as follows:

4. Sharing Personal Details

Usually, a conversation will begin to drift toward lighter, more personal matters after the basics are out of the way. This doesn’t always happen during your first conversation with someone, but the following topics are likely to come up sooner or later.

In the United States, people love (and treat) their pets like family. Don’t be surprised if the person you’re talking with brings up their pets, or wants to know about yours.

Talking about hobbies or favorite activities is one of the simplest ways to have a deeper conversation with someone.
