Tamil filmmaking legend Mani Ratnam takes on the formidable task of adapting Indian bestseller “Ponniyin Selvan” as a two-part epic, the first of which released to excellent box office at home and abroad on Sept. 29. Streamlining the source material considerably, this impressive franchise starter — co-written by Ratnam, Jayamohan and Kumaravel — remains mostly faithful to Kalki Krishnamurthy’s five novels, first serialized in the 1950s in the Tamil magazine Kalki before being translated into multiple other languages, including English.

Vandiyadevan soon falls in with a religious man, Azhwarkadiyan Nambi (Jayaram), another spy who also provides some comic relief. Together, they discover a plot to take the crown from the ailing king Sundara Chola and give it to his nephew, who had been passed over. Among those trying to use Vandiyadevan is the beautiful Nandini ( Aishwariya Rai Bachchan ), who uses her looks to get her husband, commander Chinna Pazhuvettariyar (R. Parthiban).

Things get more involved as the film goes along, of course, but Ratnam keeps the different strands moving at a fast enough pace so that you don’t notice the nearly three-hour running time. Nor does it matter that the titular Ponniyan Selvan doesn’t make an appearance until nearly the intermission.

DP Ravi Varman does justice to the sweep of the story, while CG battle scenes are staged like set-pieces from the “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, a comparison underscored by Rahman’s soaring music. The below-the-line work is top-notch throughout — not just with camera and music, but also in the production design (Thotta Tharani). The Cholas were famous for the temples they built, with the Thanjavur temple standing even now as a testament to their artistry.

Augmented with excellent visual effects, sets representing the city of Thanjavur, the new city of Kanchi and Sri Lanka, bring to life Kalki’s prose that enchanted so many readers. Similarly fine attention to detail went into the costume design, hair and makeup, as well as the jewelry (pieces of which are now offered on sale) for not only the princes and other nobles but also the ladies from Nandini to the princess Kundavai (Trisha Krishnan).

Ratnam has always had a knack for drawing out the best performances from Rai Bachchan (with whom he collaborated on “Iruvar,” “Guru” and “Raavanan”), doing so once again in the star’s first screen role since 2018, even if her dialogue is spoken by Deepa Venkat. In the role of Vandiyadevan, Karthi brings exuberant action to the film; Ravi charms as Arunmozhi; and Vikram and Parthiban exhibit dangerous intent. Rai Bachchan is suitably scheming, as is Krishnan as the princess who only cares about the Chola kingdom and is jealous (with reason) of Nandini’s beauty and ability to beguile.

The film ends on a cliffhanger. While not yet shot, Part Two has been announced and is expected to be released in 2023.

N4 review: Director Lokesh Kumar delivers yet another relatable story rooted in reality

Perfect casting and brilliant technicians come together to make this mystery an interesting watch. But it fails to entertain.

Director Lokesh Kumar’s N4 is an honest take on the difficult lives that poor fisherfolk residing in the Kasimedu area lead and how a corrupt administration attempts to punish them for the sins of the wealthy.

The film revolves around four youngsters: Surya (Michael Thangadurai), Soundarya (Gabriella Sellus), Karthi (Afsal Hameed) and Abinaya (Vinusha Devi).

All four, we are told, were orphans before being adopted and brought up by an elderly fisherwoman Kannamma (Vadivukkarasi). She resides in the N4 coastal slum in the Kasimedu region.

Surya and Soundarya like each other but have no plans to get married.

Karthi and Abinaya, a speech-impaired girl, want to tie the knot and lead a life together.

The boys labour hard when they get work, which is sporadic, difficult and often involves putting their life on the line.

The girls sell fish in the markets to eke out a livelihood. Despite their struggles to make ends meet, they lead a happy, content life by the sea.

The N4 slum, which is home to the poor fisherfolk, occasionally has the rich visiting it. Yes, bunches of well-to-do youngsters often use the place by the sea to smoke drugs and get high.

Everything is fine until one day, Surya, Karthi, Sounharya and Abinaya are returning home when they hear a gunshot being fired.

Seconds later, Abinaya, who is hit by the stray bullet, falls. What happens next is what the film is all about.

Perfect casting

Director Lokesh needs to be congratulated for several reasons including his casting.

Looking to depart from the norm of casting only fair-skinned actresses as heroines, Lokesh casts two beautiful, dusky actresses as his lead heroines — a decision that pays off rich dividends as the actresses look the part.

His choice of lead male actors also is perfect with all four lead actors delivering commendable performances.

Among these, Vinusha Devi as the speech-impaired girl Abinaya delivers a fine performance. Her usage of sign language and the way she emotes to convey her feelings impress us.

Michael Thangadurai, who delivered good performances even before, does a neat job yet again making one wonder why this talented actor hasn’t got his due recognition yet.

Gabriella Sellus shines as the fearless and vocal fisher girl Soundarya.

Brilliant technicians

It is not just the casting that Lokesh seems to have got right. His choice of technicians to seems to have been proven right.

Take, for instance, N4’s music. Music composer Balasubramanian might not be a household name yet but he does a stellar job by giving a background score that is apt to the plot and unique to the region.

His decision to score music for a couple of songs with only percussion instruments also works big time.

The numbers, despite having only percussion music, do not appear loud or harsh and are mellifluous with a high retention value.

Cinematographer Divyank’s visuals are striking and his camera gleefully captures and presents the beauty of both the sea and the land adjoining it.

Reflects the reality

N4 narrates a relatable story steeped in reality. It shows how a corrupt administration rushes to aid the rich and help them get away even with serious crimes.

It also portrays how the poor are pinned to such crimes, despite being innocent. The poor are the ones who keep repeatedly losing whatever little they have.

What is also significant about N4 is that it does not look to paint everybody with the same brush.

It initially depicts that there are exceptions to the rule and attempts to show how compelling circumstances force even those intending to be honest inside a corrupt system are made to let go of their ideals.

The flick picks up pace in parts. However, the story isn’t gripping for the audience to stay hooked.

Although the director ends up making pertinent points in the end, the manner in which the plot is narrated doesn’t draw you into the storyline.

Also, the editing could have been tighter.

As an entertainer, N4 may not score handsomely as it has phases that appear to be a little slow. For, it looks to narrate a good story rooted in reality.

Aranmanai 4 Review - A Satisfying Outing for its Target Audience!

Aranmanai 4 is the fourth installment in director Sundar.C’s horror-comedy franchise. Tamannaah Bhatia and Raashi Khanna play the female leads alongside the filmmaker. Hip hop Tamizha has scored the music for the movie.

  Premise: Sundar.C and Tamannaah are siblings who admire each other, but were separated in a family issue. Series of supernatural events happen in Tamannaah’s place in which she is found dead. Sundar.C digs deep about the mysterious situation which unravels the remaining story.

Writing/ Direction: The ghost has a fine reasoning which sets the base neatly, it is a breather that the central idea is not in the usual revenge zone. Three elements drive the screenplay, horror, comedy and the drama. The core sibling emotion works well as their bonding is established well and there is enough weightage in the crisp intercut that sets the mood right. But on the flip side, Tamannaah’s murder scene which is showcased in a detailed manner is just minimally sentimental, mainly because the sequence takes an overly long screen-time to explain what the audience already knew. The comedies are a mixed bag, Yogi Babu, VTV Ganesh and Kovai Sarala deal with the department for the most part in which Kovai Sarada’s exaggerated jokes click and offer laughter. The men are boring during the slapstick humor portions, quite funny with the dialogue counters especially in the Sundar.C’s trademark final act. But there are plenty of lengthy comedy stretches which are irrelevant to the subject and just there to fill the spot. Motta Rajendran appears in a cameo scene and the entire sequence is wholly unnecessary. The intended jump scare moments land flat as they are deteriorated by the interruptions of the comedy artists, yet the film manages to hold the thrills to an extent that the story is always on the focus point. The movie ends on an energetic note because of the climax Amman song and the sexy item number ‘Achacho’ during the rolling credits.

Performances: Tamannaah plays a key role in which she delivers a powerful performance, less screen space yet she provides the much-needed impact. Raashi Khanna carries herself with a shining presence, doesn’t impress much with acting as there is no big scope for her. Kovai Sarala holds the show well from the humor front, while Yogi Babu and VTV Ganesh rarely entertain. Superb role for KGF Garuda and he has played it with a strong conviction. Sundar.C leads the pack neatly by delivering what is exactly required for the film, however he struggles during the stunt sequences and his dupe takes the front seat. Simran and Khushboo strike big with their fierce dance in the climax Amman song.

Technicalities: This is by far the best film in the franchise from a technical perspective. Cinematography is solid, the camera angles have sufficient disturbance in the frames to give that immense experience. The songs are average, fortunately Hip hop Tamizha’s background score adds a lot of value for even some underwhelming sequences to be appealing on-screen. Decent editing overall by neatly inserting transitions between one scene and the next, however a few old style comedy sequences could have been chopped to save some time. Exorbitant usage of VFX, the output quality is better than the predecessors, still certain areas need improvement.

Writing is basic, but the film is engaging to an extent as Sundar.C packages it with a mix of comedies, emotions and thrills. Also, it’s a step-up for the franchise in terms of technicalities. Rating - 2.75/ 5

Aranmanai 4 Review: அதே அரண்மனை, அதே வாடகை; புதுசா என்ன? பயமுறுத்துகிறதா சுந்தர்.சி பேய் பிரான்சைஸ்?

சென்டிமென்ட், ஆக்‌ஷன், காமெடி, திகில், விறுவிறு சேஸிங் போன்றவை அடுத்தடுத்து கச்சிதமான அளவில் கோக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதும், அவை ஒர்க் அவுட் ஆகியிருப்பதும் மொத்த படத்தையும் ஒரு கம்ப்ளீட் பேக்கேஜ் ஆக மாற்றியிருக்கின்றன.

நிலத்திலும் நீரிலும் வாழும் 'பாக்' என்ற அமானுஷ்ய தீயசக்தியானது பிரம்மபுத்திரா நதிக்குள் சிறை வைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. எதிர்பாராத நிகழ்வாக 'பாக்' நதியிலிருந்து தப்பித்துவிடுகிறது. மறுபுறம், சென்னையில் தன் அத்தையுடன் (கோவை சரளா) வழக்குரைஞராக வாழ்ந்து வருகிறார் சரவணன் (சுந்தர்.சி). காதல் திருமணம் செய்துகொண்டு, தன்னை விட்டுப் பிரிந்து போன தங்கை செல்வி (தமன்னா) மீது கொள்ளை பாசம். இந்நிலையில், ஒருநாள் அவரது தங்கையும், தங்கையின் கணவனும் (சந்தோஷ் பிரதாப்) இறந்துவிட்டதாகச் செய்தி வரவே, அவர்கள் வாழ்ந்த பழைய அரண்மனைக்குச் செல்கிறார்.

இருவரின் மரணத்திலும் சந்தேகமிருப்பதையும் தங்கையின் குழந்தைகளுக்கு ஆபத்திருப்பதையும் உணரும் சரவணன், அதைக் கலைய முற்படும்போது மர்ம மரணங்களும், அமானுஷ்ய சம்பவங்களும் நிகழ்கின்றன. தொடர் மரணங்களுக்கு யார் காரணம், பாக்கிற்கும் இக்கொலைகளுக்கும் என்ன சம்பந்தம், குழந்தைகளை சரவணன் காப்பாற்றினாரா போன்ற கேள்விகளுக்கு வழக்கமான 'அரண்மனை ஃபார்முலாவில்' பதில் சொல்லியிருக்கிறது சுந்தர்.சி-யின் 'அரண்மனை - 4'.

ஆக்‌ஷனிலும், ரகளை செய்யும் இடங்களிலும், பதறும் தருணங்களிலும் அளவெடுத்தது போல் நடித்துத் தப்பிக்கும் சுந்தர்.சி, உருக்கமான காட்சிகளில் மேலோட்டமான நடிப்பால் உணர்வுகளைக் கடத்தத் தவறுகிறார். பாசத்தைப் பொழியும் தாயாகவும், பயமுறுத்தும் பேயாகவும் உணர்ச்சிகரமான கதாபாத்திரத்தில் அசத்தியிருக்கிறார் தமன்னா. துணை நடிகர்களில் ராமச்சந்திர ராஜுவின் கதாபாத்திரம் மட்டும் கனமாக எழுதப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. அவரது நடிப்பிலும் குறையேதும் இல்லை. பெரிய வேலை இல்லாத 'நாயகியின் கணவர்' கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு ஓகே ரக பங்களிப்பைத் தந்திருக்கிறார் சந்தோஷ் பிரதாப்.

'வளவள' வசனங்களாலும், மிகைநடிப்பாலும் துளைத்தெடுக்கிறார் கோவை சரளா. ஒரு சில இடங்களில் மட்டும் சிரிக்க வைக்கிறது யோகி பாபு - விடிவி கணேஷ் - டெல்லி கணேஷ் ஆகியோர் அடங்கிய கூட்டணி. க்ளைமாக்ஸில் ஸ்கோர் செய்பவர்கள் மொத்த படத்திலும் அதே தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியிருக்கலாம். உருவக்கேலி காமெடிகளை எப்போ விடுவீங்க யோகி? ஜெயபிரகாஷ், ராஷி கண்ணா, சிங்கம் புலி ஆகியோர் கொடுத்த வேலையைச் செய்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

இ.கிருஷ்ணசாமியின் ஒளிப்பதிவில் இரவுநேர திகில் காட்சிகளும், க்ளைமாக்ஸ் ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகளும் கச்சிதமாக இருக்கின்றன. முதற்பாதியின் 'இழுவைக்கு' கடிவாளம் போடத் தவறியிருக்கிறது ஃபென்னி ஆலிவரின் படத்தொகுப்பு. 'ஹிப்ஹாப்' ஆதியின் இசையில், மீனாட்சி இளையராஜா குரலில் 'ஜோ ஜோ ஜோ' பாடல் ஆறுதல் தர, மற்ற பாடல்கள் காதுகளுக்குக் கொலை மிரட்டல் விடுகின்றன. பரபரப்பான காட்சிகளையும் பதற வைக்கும் நொடிகளையும் மெருகேற்றி படத்திற்கு வலுசேர்த்திருக்கிறது ஆதியின் பின்னணி இசை.

'திகிலான' ஒரு அரண்மனையை கண்முன் கொண்டு வந்த விதத்தில் குருராஜின் கலை இயக்கம் கவனிக்க வைக்கிறது என்றாலும், அப்பட்டமாக செட்டிங் எனத் தெரியும் காடுகளையும் குகைகளையும் இன்னும் கூடுதல் சிரத்தையுடன் உருவாக்கியிருக்கலாம். நேர்த்தியில்லாத 'கிராஃபிக்ஸ்' காட்சிகளிலும் கூடுதல் உழைப்பைப் போட்டிருக்கலாம். அதே சமயம் க்ளைமாக்ஸில் பிரமாண்ட சிலைகள் செட், கோயில் செட், அதற்குள் படமாக்கப்பட்ட சண்டைக் காட்சிகள் போன்றவை பிரமிப்பூட்டுகின்றன.

பழங்கால அரண்மனை, அமானுஷ்ய சக்திகள், மர்ம மரணங்கள், பாசப் போராட்டங்கள், காமெடியன்கள் கூட்டணியின் சேட்டைகள், மர்மங்களைக் களையக் களமிறங்கும் சுந்தர்.சி, நல்ல அமானுஷ்ய சக்திக்கும் தீய அமானுஷ்ய சக்திக்குமான சண்டை, சுபம் என வழக்கமான அரண்மனை ஃபார்முலாவை வாடகைக்கு எடுத்து, கலர் கலராக வெள்ளையடித்து, சில பல எவர்சில்வர் பாத்திரங்களை அடுக்கி, புது அரண்மனையாக மாற்றி, அதை ஒரு பக்கா கமெர்சியல் என்டர்டெயின்மென்ட்டாகக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் சுந்தர்.சி.

'பாக்' என்ற அமானுஷ்ய சக்தியைப் பற்றிய அதிரடியான அறிமுகத்தோடு தொடங்கினாலும், தேவையில்லாத ஆக்‌ஷன், மேம்போக்கான சென்டிமென்ட் காட்சிகள், வழக்கொழிந்து போன டெம்ப்ளேட் காமெடிகள் எனச் சோதிக்கவே செய்கிறது தொடக்கக்கட்டத் திரைக்கதை. அமானுஷ்யத்தை சுந்தர்.சி நெருங்கும்போது சூடு பிடிக்கும் படம், இறுதிக்காட்சி வரை பரபரவென நகர்கிறது. 'அரண்மனை' படத்தொடர்களில் வந்த பல காட்சிகளும், பல திருப்பங்களும், பல கதாபாத்திரங்களும் இதிலும் ரிப்பீட் அடிக்கவே செய்கின்றன என்றாலும், 'பாக்' என்ற பேய், அதன் குணங்கள், லாஜிக்கே இல்லை என்றாலும் ஓடிக்கொண்டே இருக்கும் பரபர காட்சிகள், பேய்களுக்கு இடையிலான ஆக்‌ஷன் காட்சிகள் எனச் சுவாரஸ்யமான விஷயங்கள், அந்த 'வழக்கமான....' குறைகளை மறக்கடிக்க வைக்கின்றன.

சென்டிமென்ட், ஆக்‌ஷன், காமெடி, திகில், விறுவிறு சேஸிங் போன்றவை அடுத்தடுத்து கச்சிதமான அளவில் கோக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதும், அவை ஒர்க் அவுட் ஆகியிருப்பதும் மொத்த படத்தையும் ஒரு கம்ப்ளீட் பேக்கேஜ் ஆக மாற்றியிருக்கின்றன. வழக்கமான பேய் ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக்கில் கொஞ்சம் மாற்றங்கள் செய்திருப்பதும் ஆறுதல்.

புதுமையான கதைக்களங்களும், சுவாரஸ்யமான திரைமொழிகளும் வரிசை கட்டி வந்து, சினிமாவின் ரசனையைப் புதுப்பித்துக் கொண்டிருக்கும் போது, ஒரு `வழக்கமான' டெம்ப்ளட் பேய் சினிமாவாக வந்திருக்கும் இந்த `அரண்மனை - 4', கச்சிதமான ஒரு தியேட்டர் மெட்டீரியலாக மாறியிருப்பதால், ஒருவிதத்தில் அனைவரையும் ரசிக்க வைத்துத் தப்பிக்கிறது.

‘Varisu’ movie review: Vijay returns to his throwback ‘90s self in this familiar emotional entertainer

We’ve seen numerous ‘ amma sentiment’ films in Tamil cinema. And some ‘ appa sentiment' ones too.

Varisu , Vijay’s latest outing at the box office, not only puts together these two aspects that Tamil cinema has milked for many years, but also adds another dimension: sentiment among brothers. With so much material about a family that has myriad problems between its members, Varisu resembles the popcorn tub that has seen many rounds of flavoured seasonings.

Bland popcorn in the movies isn’t exciting anymore, and that seems to be the case with on-screen proceedings as well. Vijay has certainly experimented with genres in his last few films – Bigil was a sports drama, and Beast was about people stuck inside a mall – but this time, with Varisu , he goes back to a formula that has worked well for him in the past: family.

Remember Vijay’s family in Minsara Kanna (1999) , a group of rich people masquerading to be poor to unite two people? In Varisu , they are rich – and very rich at that. The house they live in, which we see a few minutes into the film, is among the most lavish residences you’d have ever seen in Tamil cinema. The characters inside talk business and deal in crores, chief among them being Rajendaran (Sarath Kumar) whose business rival is Jayaprakash (Prakash Raj). Rajendaran proudly flaunts his two sons – played by Srikanth and Shaam – but is reticent about talking about Vijay, his youngest son. Why’s that? Will Vijay agree to ditch his carefree life – the first time we see him, he’s on a bike trip and enjoying Nature’s sights and sounds – and show interest in his father’s multi-crore business?

For a first half that relies heavily on the slow, TV serial-like sequences, Varisu has little heft to the emotional beats; the mother-son relationship seems superficial, while the brothers’ tussle to take over a multi-crore business seems trivial. Not aiding in the cause is some very average comic relief from Yogi Babu and a love story with Rashmika that seems to be going nowhere. It is only in the second half that Varisu picks up some steam. A character’s decision seems to find some payback, and once Vijay gets into his all-familiar cutesy-fun zone, Varisu becomes a different beast .

There are a few theatrical moments that are bound to hit the mark. Sparking off old Vijay film references in an important business meeting is an idea that Vijay’s fans will celebrate in the cinema halls, as will they, when the star gets dancing to the fast-paced ‘Ranjithame ’ . Those last few seconds, uff.

But, as with most hero films, Varisu too needs Vijay to play the knight in shining armour for every small problem in the house. And thus, we have an unnecessary track on someone getting kidnapped and Vijay saving the day; things that could have been taken off to lessen the 170-minute long runtime. Music composer Thaman gets the dance numbers right, and cinematographer Karthik Palani adds colour to the sequences, but it is Vijay who seems to be having the most fun.

After a long time, it is heartening to see him get back to being humourous and goofy. There are plenty of moments in the second half – especially during his conversations with his brothers and Prakash Raj’s gang – during which Vijay goes back to having fun and being the hero we loved a few decades back, before he became too socially conscious in his roles. Beyond Varisu ’s staid plot and saccharine emotional beats, that’s what stays in your mind in this Vamshi Paidipally directorial.

அருமபுரி என்ற ஊருக்கு அருகில் சுரங்கம் அமைக்க அரசு திட்டமிடுகிறது. ஆனால், அந்த சுரங்கத்தை எதிர்த்து விஜய் சேதுபதி தலைமையிலான மக்கள் படை என்ற தீவிரவாதக் குழு பேராடுகிறது. ரயில் குண்டு வெடிப்பு, காவலர்களைக் கொல்வது என பலவித தீவிரவாத செயல்களில் ஈடுபடுகிறது. மக்கள் படை தலைவன் ஆன விஜய் சேதுபதி யார் என்றே அரசுக்கு தெரியாது. அவரைக் கண்டுபிடிக்கவும், அவரது படையை அழிக்கவும் பல மாதங்களாக சேத்தன் தலைமையில் ஒரு காவல் துறை அணி போராடி வருகிறது. அந்தக் குழுவில் டிரைவராக வேலைக்குச் சேரும் சூரி, ஓரிரு முறை விஜய் சேதுபதியைப் பார்க்கிறார். தனது கடமையில் ஈடுபாட்டுடன் இருக்கும் சூரி, மேலதிகாரி சேத்தன் ஆணையை மதிக்காத காரணத்தால் மெமோ கொடுக்கப்பட்டு பணித் தண்டனை கொடுக்கப்படுகிறார். காவல் துறை குழுவுக்கு புதிய அதிகாரியாக டிஎஸ்பி கவுதம் மேனன் நியமிக்கப்படுகிறார். அதன் பிறகு அந்தக் குழுவினர் விஜய் சேதுபதியைக் கண்டுபிடித்தார்களா, சூரி அதனுள் எப்படி வருகிறார் என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை. படத்திற்காகத் தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ள காட்டுப்பகுதி, காவல்துறை குழு இருக்கும் இடம், படத்தில் கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்காகத் தேர்வு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ள நடிகர்கள் என ஒவ்வொருவருமே குறிப்பிடும்படியான அதிகப்படியான ஈடுபாட்டைக் காட்டியிருக்கிறார்கள். தமிழ் சினிமாவில் தொடர்ந்து பலத்த விமர்சனங்களுக்குள்ளாகும் படங்களைக் கொடுத்து வரும் இயக்குனர் வெற்றிமாறன் இந்தப் படத்தையும் அப்படியே கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். வெற்றிமாறன் படத்தில் சூரி கதாநாயகனா என யோசித்தவர்கள், இந்தப் படத்தைப் பார்த்த பின் குமரேசன் என்ற போலீஸ் டிரைவர் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் சூரி எந்த அளவிற்குப் பொருத்தமாக நடித்திருக்கிறார் என்பதை ஆச்சரியத்துடன் பார்ப்பார்கள். ஒரு இடத்தில் கூட இதற்கு முந்தை நகைச்சுவை நடிகர் சூரியை படத்தில் பார்க்க முடியாது. மேலதிகாரியாக இருந்தாலும் தான் தவறு செய்யாத போது எதற்காக மன்னிப்பு கேட்க வேண்டும் என்ற குணம் கொண்டவர். பவானிஸ்ரீ மீது வரும் காதலில் அவருடைய காதல் நடிப்பு கூட கவனத்தை ஈர்க்கிறது. படத்தின் கடைசி அரை மணி நேரத்தில் சூரியின் நடிப்பிற்கும், ஆக்ஷனுக்கும் தியேட்டர் முழுவதும் கைத்தட்டல் கிடைப்பதே கதையின் நாயகனாக சூரிக்குக் கிடைத்துள்ள மிகப் பெரும் பாராட்டு. இந்த முதல் பாகத்தைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் விஜய் சேதுபதியைத் தேடும் குழுவிற்கு முதல் அதிகாரியாக இருக்கும் கவுதம் மேனனை விட அவருக்குக் கீழ் சிஓ--வாக பணி புரியும் சேத்தன் தனது கடுகடுப்பை அந்த அளவிற்குக் காட்டியிருக்கிறார். சூரியைப் பார்த்தாலே எரிச்சல் வருகிறது என்று சொல்லுமளவிற்கு அவரது கதாபாத்திரம் உள்ளது. டிஎஸ்பி ஆக கவுதம் மேனன், அந்தப் பதவிக்குரிய மிடுக்குடன் நடித்திருக்கிறார். இரண்டாம் பாகத்தில் இவருக்கான காட்சிகள் அதிகம் இருக்கலாம் எனத் தெரிகிறது. சூரியின் ஜோடியாக மலை கிராமத்துப் பெண்ணாக பவானிஸ்ரீ. அந்தப் பார்வையும், தன் பெற்றோரைப் பறிகொடுத்த சோகத்தையும் பற்றிச் சொல்லும் போது கண்கலங்க வைக்கிறார். தலைமைச் செயலாளராக ராஜீவ்மேனன். அந்தப் பதவிக்குரிய அதிகாரத் தோரணையை அற்புதமாக வெளிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறார். விஜய் சேதுபதிக்கு இந்த முதல் பாகத்தில் காட்சிகள் குறைவுதான். இடையிடையே வந்து போகிறார். கிளைமாக்சுக்கு முன்பாகக் கொஞ்சமாக வருகிறார். இரண்டாம் பாகத்தில் அவருடைய காட்சிகள்தான் அதிகம் இருக்கும் எனத் தெரிகிறது. படம் முடிந்த பிறகு இரண்டாம் பாகக் காட்சிகள் சிலவற்றைக் காட்டுவதிலிருந்து அப்படி ஒரு எதிர்பார்ப்பு உள்ளது. தமிழ் சினிமாவில் 1500 படங்களுக்கும் மேல் இசையமைத்தவர் இளையராஜா. அவருடைய இசைத் திறமை என்னவென்பது பற்றி தமிழ் சினிமா ரசிகர்கள் நன்கறிவார்கள். இந்தப் படத்திற்காக தனி கவனம் செலுத்தி, உலகத் தரம் வாய்ந்த வேறொரு விதமான பின்னணி இசையைக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். படத்தின் ஆரம்பக் காட்சியிலேயே நம்மை படத்துக்குள் இழுத்துக் கொண்டு செல்கிறது அவரது பின்னணி இசை. இரண்டு பாடல்களும் அப்படியே மனதோடு கலக்கிறது. தன் காதலியை போலீஸ் பிடியிலிருந்து காப்பாற்ற சூரி ஓடும் போது இளையராஜாவின் குரலில் வரும் அந்தப் பாடல் உருக வைக்கிறது. காடு, மேடு, மலை, இரவு, பகல், பனி எனக் கடந்து இயற்கையுடன் ஒன்றி ஒளிப்பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறார் வேல்ராஜ். ராமர் படத்தொகுப்பு, ஜாக்கி கலை, பீட்டர் ஹெய்ன், ஸ்டன்ட் சிவா ஆகியோரின் சண்டைக் காட்சிகள், என மற்ற தொழில்நுட்பக் குழுவினர்களும் கடுமையாய் உழைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். காவல் துறையின் விசாரணைக் காட்சிகளை மிகவும் வெளிப்படையாகக் காட்டியிருக்கிறார்கள். சென்சார் செய்யப்பட்டும் அந்தக் காட்சிகள் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளது ஆச்சரியம்தான். படத்தின் ஆரம்ப ரயில் குண்டு வெடிப்புக் காட்சி நீளமாகவும், இடைவேளைக்குப் பின் கொஞ்ச நேரம் கதையோட்டம் கொஞ்சம் தடைபடுவதும் படத்தின் வேகத்தைக் குறைக்கிறது. Raayan movie review: Dhanush’s 50th film is a must-watch for its performances and unexpected twists

Raayan movie review: dhanush’s directorial totally packs a punch. ar rahman delivers a brilliant background score that elevates the film..

He is a National Award-winning actor, who has always won praise for his performances. Thus, it wasn’t a surprise when Tamil star Dhanush chose to direct his first film, Pa Paandi, in 2017. And he has now chosen to write and direct his second film, Raayan , a gangster drama, which also marks the 50th film in his career. Kathavaraayan or Raayan (Dhanush) is the eldest in a family consisting of two brothers – Manickam (Kalidas Jayaram), Muthu (Sundeep Kishan) – and a sister Durga (Dushara Vijayan) – and it falls on Raayan to look after them when their parents leave home one day to never return. They live in a small town in Tamil Nadu, which is ruled by two gangsters, Sekar (SJ Suryah) and Saravanan, and there seems to be peace prevailing on the surface. 

But the new police commissioner ( Prakash Raj) , who comes to town, decides to stir things up a little to uncover the murky goings-on between the gangs. And it is here that the first half really kicks off. College-going Manickam, loafer Muthu and Raayan, who runs a small fast food stall, and Durga lead a pretty happy life till an incident causes upheaval. How and why does Raayan get dragged into this gang war? What happens next forms the rest of the story.

What works, what doesn’t

Dhanush has always been a writer, having written other scripts and plenty of lyrics for songs. He has penned the story of Raayan, a gangster revenge drama, and one must say that the second half was much better scripted than the first. The theme of the film is not new, but how Dhanush has treated it as a writer is different and highly engaging, particularly in the second half, which has plenty of plot twists.

What he has also done as a writer is ensured he has given meaty roles to the other actors, especially Kalidas, Sundeep and Dushara. The three characters are integral to the plot and the character arcs he has etched also allows them to show different facets of their acting skills.; and one must compliment Dhanush for this.

The only aspect that could been a minor flaw is the routine writing in the first half which is a sort of deja vu. He has thrown in some humour intermittently by way of dialogues and this works in the film’s favour without hampering its flow. The ending though wasn’t as sharp as expected but what Dhanush has cleverly done is set up the platform for a sequel to Raayan.

The performances and music

All the main actors in the film, including SJ Suryah, who plays protagonist, have performed well lending more gravitas to this film. Dhanush has, of course, excelled not just as an actor but director too. As an actor, the look given to him (short hair, rough beard) and the way he channels his anger with his eyes is quite captivating particularly in the climax fight.

With the movie being certified A and the theme being gang wars, there is obviously plenty of violence (especially in the second half). There are some superb action/fight blocks in the film that have been well-choreographed and shot, particularly the use of the handheld camera that movies with the actors. The interval action sequence, as well as the hospital scene and climax are some really notable scenes that are superb in the film.

AR Rahman has scored the music and BGM for Raayan and he has delivered a brilliant background score that really elevates the film, especially the action sequences. One must mention the work of DOP Om Prakash and editor Prasanna GK here. The striking visuals and sharp cuts and close ups in the film enhance the blow (literally and figuratively) it seeks to deliver.

Dhanush’s Raayan totally packs a punch and is a must-watch for its captivating performances and unexpected story twists. It’s a stellar 50th career film for Dhanush.
